A long-standing challenge is the design of chips resilient to faults and glitches. Both fine-grained gate diversity and coarse-grained modular redundancy have been used in the past. However, these approaches have not been well-studied under other threat models where some stakeholders in the supply chain are untrusted. Increasing digital sovereignty tensions raise concerns regarding the use of foreign off-the-shelf tools and IPs, or off-sourcing fabrication, driving research into the design of resilient chips under this threat model. This paper addresses a threat model considering three pertinent attacks to resilience: distribution, zonal, and compound attacks. To mitigate these attacks, we introduce the \texttt{ResiLogic} framework that exploits \textit{Diversity by Composability}: constructing diverse circuits composed of smaller diverse ones by design. This gives designer the capability to create circuits at design time without requiring extra redundancy in space or cost. Using this approach at different levels of granularity is shown to improve the resilience of circuit design in \texttt{ResiLogic} against the three considered attacks by a factor of five. Additionally, we also make a case to show how E-Graphs can be utilized to generate diverse circuits under given rewrite rules.

Stance detection (SD) identifies a text's position towards a target, typically labeled as favor, against, or none. We introduce Open-Target Stance Detection (OTSD), the most realistic task where targets are neither seen during training nor provided as input. We evaluate Large Language Models (LLMs) GPT-4o, GPT-3.5, Llama-3, and Mistral, comparing their performance to the only existing work, Target-Stance Extraction (TSE), which benefits from predefined targets. Unlike TSE, OTSD removes the dependency of a predefined list, making target generation and evaluation more challenging. We also provide a metric for evaluating target quality that correlates well with human judgment. Our experiments reveal that LLMs outperform TSE in target generation when the real target is explicitly and not explicitly mentioned in the text. Computational offload to hardware accelerators is gaining traction due to increasing computational demands and efficiency challenges. Programmable hardware, like FPGAs, offers a promising platform in rapidly evolving application areas, with the benefits of hardware acceleration and software programmability. Unfortunately, such systems composed of multiple hardware components must consider integrity in the case of malicious components. In this work, we propose Samsara, the first secure and resilient platform that derives, from Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT), protocols to enhance the computing resilience of programmable hardware. Samsara uses a novel lightweight hardware-based BFT protocol for Systems-on-Chip, called H-Quorum, that implements the theoretical-minimum latency between applications and replicated compute nodes. To withstand malicious behaviors, Samsara supports hardware rejuvenation, which is used to replace, relocate, or diversify faulty compute nodes. In this paper, we investigate the conditions for the Mal'cev-Neumann series ring {\Lambda} = R((G;{\sigma};{\tau})) to be left fusible and an SA-ring. Also, we show that: if G is a quasitotally ordered group and U a {\Sigma}-compatible semiprime ideal of R, then R((G;{\sigma};{\tau})) is a {\Sigma}(U((G; {\sigma}; {\tau})))-zip ring if and only if R is a {\Sigma}(U )-zip ring.

In Part-I, we presented an optimal day-ahead scheduling scheme for dispatching active distribution networks accounting for the flexibility provided by electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) and other controllable resources such as battery energy storage systems (BESSs). Part-II presents the intra-day control layer for tracking the dispatch plan computed from the day-ahead scheduling stage. The control problem is formulated as model predictive control (MPC) with an objective to track the dispatch plan setpoint every 5 minutes, while actuated every 30 seconds. MPC accounts for the uncertainty of the power injections from stochastic resources (such as demand and generation from photovoltaic - PV plants) by short-term forecasts. MPC also accounts for the grid's operational constraints (i.e., the limits on the nodal voltages and the line power-flows) by a linearized optimal power flow (LOPF) model based on the power-flow sensitivity coefficients, and for the operational constraints of the controllable resources (i.e., BESSs and EVCSs). The proposed framework is experimentally validated on a real-life ADN at the EPFL's Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory and is composed of a medium voltage (MV) bus connected to three low voltage distribution networks. It hosts two controllable EVCSs (172 kWp and 32 F~kWp), multiple PV plants (aggregated generation of 42~kWp), uncontrollable demand from office buildings (20 kWp), and two controllable BESSs (150kW/300kWh and 25kW/25kWh)., Comment: 10 pages, 14 Figures, submitted for review in IEEE Transactions

This paper proposes a grid-aware scheduling and control framework for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs) for dispatching the operation of an active power distribution network. The framework consists of two stages. In the first stage, we determine an optimal day-ahead power schedule at the grid connection point (GCP), referred to as the dispatch plan. Then, in the second stage, a real-time model predictive control is proposed to track the day-ahead dispatch plan using flexibility from EVCSs. The dispatch plan accounts for the uncertainties of vehicles connected to the EVCS along with other uncontrollable power injections, by day-ahead predicted scenarios. We propose using a Gaussian-Mixture-Model (GMM) for the forecasting of EVCS demand using the historical dataset on arrival, departure times, EV battery capacity, State-of-Charge (SoC) targets, etc. The framework ensures that the grid is operated within its voltage and branches power-flow operational bounds, modeled by a linearized optimal power-flow model, maintaining the tractability of the problem formulation. The scheme is numerically and experimentally validated on a real-life distribution network at the EPFL connected to two EVCSs, two batteries, three photovoltaic plants, and multiple heterogeneous loads. The US Care Policy Scorecard seeks to assess the US care policy environment at the federal level by adapting and implementing the Care Policy Scorecard Framework and Tool in the US context. The US Scorecard looks at 30 federal policy indicators related to both unpaid care and underpaid care work (UUCW). Each policy indicator is measured by an average of 18 assessment criteria with the aim to determine the existence of the policy as well as to evaluate the performance and progress of the policy in relation to its design, implementation, and impact., The US Care Policy Scorecard demonstrates that federal UUCW policies are severely lacking, and the needs of caregivers and care workers are not being met by federal policies. It is women of color and immigrant women who are most harmed by the US’s failure to fully support working families, caregivers, and care workers. This is a result of a history of policymaking rooted in sexism and racism that makes care work invisible and undervalued. The US receives an aggregate score of 43%, meeting less than half of all possible criteria when all care policy indicators in the US Care Policy Scorecard are examined and aggregated., In addition to showcasing how each policy indicator and policy area measured scored, the report includes examples of states that have passed care policies in light of absent or weak federal policies, as well as policy recommendations to strengthen the care policy environment in the US.

Pretrained language models underpin several AI applications, but their high computational cost for training limits accessibility. Initiatives such as BLOOM and StarCoder aim to democratize access to pretrained models for collaborative community development. However, such existing models face challenges: limited multilingual capabilities, continual pretraining causing catastrophic forgetting, whereas pretraining from scratch is computationally expensive, and compliance with AI safety and development laws. This paper presents Aurora-M, a 15B parameter multilingual open-source model trained on English, Finnish, Hindi, Japanese, Vietnamese, and code. Continually pretrained from StarCoderPlus on 435 billion additional tokens, Aurora-M surpasses 2 trillion tokens in total training token count. It is the first open-source multilingual model fine-tuned on human-reviewed safety instructions, thus aligning its development not only with conventional red-teaming considerations, but also with the specific concerns articulated in the Biden-Harris Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. Aurora-M is rigorously evaluated across various tasks and languages, demonstrating robustness against catastrophic forgetting and outperforming alternatives in multilingual settings, particularly in safety evaluations. Optical lithography is the main enabler to semiconductor manufacturing. It requires extensive processing to perform the Resolution Enhancement Techniques (RETs) required to transfer the design data to a working Integrated Circuits (ICs). The processing power and computational runtime for RETs tasks is ever increasing due to the continuous reduction of the feature size and the expansion of the chip area. State-of-the-art research sought Machine Learning (ML) technologies to reduce runtime and computational power, however they are still not used in production yet. In this study, we analyze the reasons holding back ML computational lithography from being production ready and present a novel highly scalable end-to-end flow that enables production ready ML-RET correction.

This paper proposes a cyber-physical architecture for the secured social operation of isolated hybrid microgrids (HMGs). On the physical side of the proposed architecture, an optimal scheduling scheme considering various renewable energy sources (RESs) and fossil fuel-based distributed generation units (DGs) is proposed. Regarding the cyber layer of MGs, a wireless architecture based on low range wide area (LORA) technology is introduced for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in smart electricity grids. In the proposed architecture, the LORA data frame is described in detail and designed for the application of smart meters considering DGs and ac-dc converters. Additionally, since the cyber layer of smart grids is highly vulnerable to cyber-attacks, t1his paper proposes a deep-learning-based cyber-attack detection model (CADM) based on bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) and sequential hypothesis testing (SHT) to detect false data injection attacks (FDIA) on the smart meters within AMI. The performance of the proposed energy management architecture is evaluated using the IEEE 33-bus test system. In order to investigate the effect of FDIA on the isolated HMGs and highlight the interactions between the cyber layer and physical layer, an FDIA is launched against the test system. The results showed that a successful attack can highly damage the system and cause widespread load shedding. Also, the performance of the proposed CADM is examined using a real-world dataset. Results prove the effectiveness of the proposed CADM in detecting the attacks using only two samples.

Recently, video super resolution (VSR) has become a very impactful task in the area of Computer Vision due to its various applications. In this paper, we propose Recurrent Back-Projection Generative Adversarial Network (RBPGAN) for VSR in an attempt to generate temporally coherent solutions while preserving spatial details. RBPGAN integrates two state-of-the-art models to get the best in both worlds without compromising the accuracy of produced video. The generator of the model is inspired by RBPN system, while the discriminator is inspired by TecoGAN. We also utilize Ping-Pong loss to increase temporal consistency over time. Our contribution together results in a model that outperforms earlier work in terms of temporally consistent details, as we will demonstrate qualitatively and quantitatively using different datasets.

This paper outlines the winning solutions employed in addressing the MUAD uncertainty quantification challenge held at ICCV 2023. The challenge was centered around semantic segmentation in urban environments, with a particular focus on natural adversarial scenarios. The report presents the results of 19 submitted entries, with numerous techniques drawing inspiration from cutting-edge uncertainty quantification methodologies presented at prominent conferences in the fields of computer vision and machine learning and journals over the past few years. Within this document, the challenge is introduced, shedding light on its purpose and objectives, which primarily revolved around enhancing the robustness of semantic segmentation in urban scenes under varying natural adversarial conditions. The report then delves into the top-performing solutions. Moreover, the document aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the diverse solutions deployed by all participants. We investigate an optical switching mechanism for applications in active integrated photonic circuits. The mechanism utilizes a large nonlinearity of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) in epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) regime. The effect of optically induced switching is investigated in hybrid plasmonic waveguides (HPWG) with ITO layer that are often used as a platform for various active photonic components, including optical modulators. To study the effect, nonlinear Maxwell equations are solved numerically in time and frequency domains. The all-optical mechanism of switching in HPWG is quantitatively compared with an electrical gating that is often used to manipulate hybrid modes. It is shown that the optical pumping could potentially cause more efficient switching. The influence of light intensity on HPWG properties and interplay between hybrid modes are investigated numerically in different regimes. Transmittance and phase variation are calculated as a function of light intensity for Si and Si3N4 waveguides. It is shown that the transmittance and its intensity dependence are strongly affected by the ITO thickness. A significant for applications step-like variation of phase and transmittance with intensity is detected. The possibility to control the excitation conditions for surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) in HPWG using active layer of ITO in nonlinear regime is demonstrated and discussed.

Tomatoes are a major crop worldwide, and accurately classifying their maturity is important for many agricultural applications, such as harvesting, grading, and quality control. In this paper, the authors propose a novel method for tomato maturity classification using a convolutional transformer. The convolutional transformer is a hybrid architecture that combines the strengths of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformers. Additionally, this study introduces a new tomato dataset named KUTomaData, explicitly designed to train deep-learning models for tomato segmentation and classification. KUTomaData is a compilation of images sourced from a greenhouse in the UAE, with approximately 700 images available for training and testing. The dataset is prepared under various lighting conditions and viewing perspectives and employs different mobile camera sensors, distinguishing it from existing datasets. The contributions of this paper are threefold:Firstly, the authors propose a novel method for tomato maturity classification using a modular convolutional transformer. Secondly, the authors introduce a new tomato image dataset that contains images of tomatoes at different maturity levels. Lastly, the authors show that the convolutional transformer outperforms state-of-the-art methods for tomato maturity classification. The effectiveness of the proposed framework in handling cluttered and occluded tomato instances was evaluated using two additional public datasets, Laboro Tomato and Rob2Pheno Annotated Tomato, as benchmarks. The evaluation results across these three datasets demonstrate the exceptional performance of our proposed framework, surpassing the state-of-the-art by 58.14%, 65.42%, and 66.39% in terms of mean average precision scores for KUTomaData, Laboro Tomato, and Rob2Pheno Annotated Tomato, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures and 8 Tables
