Magnetized hypermassive neutron stars (HMNSs) have been proposed as a way for neutron star (NS) mergers to produce high electron fraction, high velocity ejecta, as required by kilonova models to explain the observed light curve of GW170817. The HMNS drives outflows through neutrino energy deposition and mechanical oscillations, and raises the electron fraction of outflows through neutrino interactions before collapsing to a black hole (BH). Here we perform 3D numerical simulations of HMNS-torus systems in ideal magnetohydrodynamics, using a leakage/absorption scheme for neutrino transport, the nuclear APR equation of state, and Newtonian self-gravity, with a pseudo-Newtonian potential added after BH formation. Due to the uncertainty in the HMNS collapse time, we choose two different parameterized times to induce collapse. We also explore two initial magnetic field geometries in the torus, and evolve the systems until the outflows diminish significantly ($\sim 1 - 2$ $\mathrm{s}$). We find bluer, faster outflows as compared to equivalent BH-torus systems, producing $M\sim 10^{-3} M_\odot$ of ejecta with $Y_e \geq 0.25$ and $v \geq 0.25c$ by the simulation end. Approximately half the outflows are launched in disk winds at times $t\lesssim 500$ $\mathrm{ms}$, with a broad distribution of electron fractions and velocities, depending on the initial condition. The remaining outflows are thermally-driven, characterized by lower velocities and electron fractions. Nucleosynthesis with tracer particles shows patterns resembling solar abundances in all models. Although outflows from our simulations do not match those inferred from two-component modelling of the GW170817 kilonova, self-consistent multidimensional detailed kilonova models are required to determine if our outflows can power the blue kilonova., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We present Score, a rule engine designed and implemented for the Scone knowledge base system. Scone is a knowledge base system designed for storing and manipulating rich representations of general knowledge in symbolic form. It represents knowledge in the form of nodes and links in a network structure, and it can perform basic inference about the relationships between different elements efficiently. On its own, Scone acts as a sort of "smart memory" that can interface with other software systems. One area of improvement for Scone is how useful it can be in supplying knowledge to an intelligent agent that can use the knowledge to perform actions and update the knowledge base with its observations. We augment the Scone system with a production rule engine that automatically performs simple inference based on existing and newly-added structures in Scone's knowledge base, potentially improving the capabilities of any planning systems built on top of Scone. Production rule systems consist of "if-then" production rules that try to match their predicates to existing knowledge and fire their actions when their predicates are satisfied. We propose two kinds of production rules, if-added and if-needed rules, that differ in how they are checked and fired to cover multiple use cases. We then implement methods to efficiently check and fire these rules in a large knowledge base. The new rule engine is not meant to be a complex stand-alone planner, so we discuss how it fits into the context of Scone and future work on planning systems., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are currently being investigated for various applications, ranging from sensors to logics and neuromorphic hardware. The fabrication process must be compatible with flexible and scalable digital techniques to address this wide spectrum of applications. Here, we report a direct-write additive process to fabricate fully 3D printed OECTs. We developed 3D printable conducting, semiconducting, insulating, and electrolyte inks to achieve this. The 3D-printed OECTs, operating in the depletion mode, can be fabricated on thin and flexible substrates, yielding high mechanical and environmental stability. We also developed a 3D printable nanocellulose formulation for the OECT substrate, demonstrating one of the first examples of fully 3D printed electronic devices. Good dopamine biosensing capabilities (limit of detection down to 6 uM without metal gate electrodes) and long-term (~1 hour) synapses response underscore that the present OECT manufacturing strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring rapid design change and digitally enabled direct-write techniques.

We examine the effect of neutrino flavor transformation by the fast flavor instability (FFI) on long-term mass ejection from accretion disks formed after neutron star mergers. Neutrino emission and absorption in the disk set the composition of the disk ejecta, which subsequently undergoes $r$-process nucleosynthesis upon expansion and cooling. Here we perform 28 time-dependent, axisymmetric, viscous-hydrodynamic simulations of accretion disks around hypermassive neutron stars (HMNSs) of variable lifetime, using a 3-species neutrino leakage scheme for emission and an annular-lightbulb scheme for absorption. We include neutrino flavor transformation due the FFI in a parametric way, by modifying the absorbed neutrino fluxes and temperatures, allowing for flavor mixing at various levels of flavor equilibration, and also in a way that aims to respect the lepton-number preserving symmetry of the neutrino self-interaction Hamiltonian. We find that for a promptly-formed black hole (BH), the FFI lowers the average electron fraction of the disk outflow due to a decrease in neutrino absorption, driven primarily by a drop in electron neutrino/antineutrino flux upon flavor mixing. For a long-lived HMNS, the disk emits more heavy lepton neutrinos and reabsorbs more electron neutrinos than for a BH, with a smaller drop in flux compensated by a higher neutrino temperature upon flavor mixing. The resulting outflow has a broader electron fraction distribution, a more proton-rich peak, and undergoes stronger radiative driving. Disks with intermediate HMNS lifetimes show results that fall in between these two limits. In most cases, the impact of the FFI on the outflow is moderate, with changes in mass ejection, average velocity, and average electron fraction of order $\sim 10\%$, and changes in the lanthanide/actinide mass fraction of up to a factor $\sim 2$., Comment: Accepted by PRD. We examine the long-term evolution of accretion tori around black hole (BH) remnants of compact object mergers involving at least one neutron star, to better understand their contribution to kilonovae and the synthesis of r-process elements. To this end, we modify the unsplit magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solver in FLASH4.5 to work in non-uniform three-dimensional spherical coordinates, enabling more efficient coverage of a large dynamic range in length scales while exploiting symmetries in the system. This modified code is used to perform BH accretion disk simulations that vary the initial magnetic field geometry and disk compactness, utilizing a physical equation of state, a neutrino leakage scheme for emission and absorption, and modeling the BH's gravity with a pseudo-Newtonian potential. Simulations run for long enough to achieve a radiatively-inefficient state in the disk. We find robust mass ejection with both poloidal and toroidal initial field geometries, and suppressed outflow at high disk compactness. With the included physics, we obtain bimodal velocity distributions that trace back to mass ejection by magnetic stresses at early times, and to thermal processes in the radiatively-inefficient state at late times. The electron fraction distribution of the disk outflow is broad in all models, and the ejecta geometry follows a characteristic hourglass shape. We test the effect of removing neutrino absorption or nuclear recombination with axisymmetric models, finding $\sim 50\%$ less mass ejection and more neutron-rich composition without neutrino absorption, and a subdominant contribution from nuclear recombination. Nanostructures of conventional metals offer manipulation of light at the nanoscale but are limited to static behavior due to their fixed material properties. To develop the next frontier of dynamic nanooptics and metasurfaces, we utilize the redox-tunable optical properties of conducting polymers, which were recently shown to be capable of sustaining plasmons in their most conducting oxidized state. Using nanodisks of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) as a model system, we present the first electrically tunable conducting polymer nanooptical antennas. In addition to repeated on/off switching of the polymeric nanoantennas, we demonstrate the possibility for gradual electrical tuning of their nanooptical response, which was found to be related to the modulation of both density and mobility of the mobile polaronic charge carriers in the polymer. The presented concept takes important steps towards electrically tunable metasurfaces with truly dynamic optical nanoantenna pixels, with not only varying farfield but also tunable nearfield. The work paves the way for applications ranging from tunable flat metaoptics to adaptable smart windows.

The conduction band structure in methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) was studied both by angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (AR-2PPE) with low-photon intensity and angle-resolved low-energy inverse photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-LEIPS). Clear energy dispersion of the conduction band along the {\Gamma}M direction was observed by these independent methods under different temperatures, and the dispersion was found to be consistent with band calculations under the cubic phase. The effective mass of the electrons at the {\Gamma} point was estimated to be (0.20+-0.05)m0 at 90 K. The observed energy position was largely different between the AR-LEIPS and AR-2PPE, demonstrating the electron correlation effects on the band structures. In this study, different electronic structure evolutions of perovskite single crystals are found via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES): (i) unchanged top valence band (VB) dispersions under different temperatures can be found in the CH3NH3PbI3, (ii) phase transitions induced the evolution of top VB dispersions, and even a top VB splitting with Rashba effects can be observed in the CH3NH3PbBr3. Combined with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), metastable atom electron spectroscopy (MAES), and DFT calculation, we confirm different band structure evolutions observed in these two perovskite single crystals are originated from the cleaved top surface layers, where the different surface geometries with CH3NH3+-I in CH3NH3PbI3 and Pb-Br in CH3NH3PbBr3 are responsible for finding band dispersion change and appearing of the Rashba-type splitting. Such findings suggest that the top surface layer in organic halide perovskites should be carefully considered to create functional interfaces for developing perovskite devices., Comment: 4 figures

The presence of elemental vacancies in materials is inevitable according to statistical thermodynamics, which will decide the chemical and physical properties of the investigated system. However, the controlled manipulation of vacancies for specific applications is a challenge. Here we report a facile method for creating large concentrations of S vacancies in the inert basal plane of MoS2 supported on semimetal CoMoP2. With a small applied potential, S atoms can be removed in the form of H2S due to the optimized free energy of formation. The existence of vacancies favors electron injection from the electrode to the active site by decreasing the contact resistance. As a consequence, the activity is increased by 221 % with the vacancy-rich MoS2 as electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A small overpotential of 75 mV is needed to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2, which is considered among the best values achieved for MoS2. It is envisaged that this work may provide a new strategy for utilizing the semimetal phase for structuring MoS2 into a multi-functional material.

This white paper submitted for the 2020 Canadian Long-Range Planning process (LRP2020) presents the prospects for Canada and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) from 2020-2030, focussing on the first phase of the project (SKA1) scheduled to begin construction early in the next decade. SKA1 will make transformational advances in our understanding of the Universe across a wide range of fields, and Canadians are poised to play leadership roles in several. Canadian key SKA technologies will ensure a good return on capital investment in addition to strong scientific returns, positioning Canadian astronomy for future opportunities well beyond 2030. We study mass ejection from accretion disks around newly-formed hypermassive neutron stars (HMNS). Standard kilonova model fits to GW170817 require at least a lanthanide-poor ('blue') and lanthanide-rich ('red') component. The existence of a blue component has been used as evidence for a HMNS remnant of finite lifetime, but average disk outflow velocities from existing long-term HMNS simulations fall short of the inferred value ($\sim 0.25c$) by a factor of $\sim 2$. Here we use time-dependent, axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations of HMNS disks to explore the limits of the model and its ability to account for observations. For physically plausible parameter choices compatible with GW170817, we find that hydrodynamic models that use shear viscosity to transport angular momentum cannot eject matter with mass-averaged velocities larger than $\sim 0.15c$. While outflow velocities in our simulations can exceed the asymptotic value for a steady-state neutrino-driven wind, the increase in the average velocity due to viscosity is not sufficient. Therefore, viscous HMNS disk winds cannot reproduce by themselves the ejecta properties inferred from multi-component fits to kilonova light curves from GW170817. Three possible resolutions remain feasible within standard merger ejecta channels: more sophisticated radiative transfer models that allow for photon reprocessing between ejecta components, inclusion of magnetic stresses, or enhancement of the dynamical ejecta. The Gemini Infrared Multi-Object Spectrograph (GIRMOS) is a powerful new instrument being built to facility-class standards for the Gemini telescope. It takes advantage of the latest developments in adaptive optics and integral field spectrographs. GIRMOS will carry out simultaneous high-angular-resolution, spatially-resolved infrared ($1-2.4$ $\mu$m) spectroscopy of four objects within a two-arcminute field-of-regard by taking advantage of multi-object adaptive optics. This capability does not currently exist anywhere in the world and therefore offers significant scientific gains over a very broad range of topics in astronomical research. For example, current programs for high redshift galaxies are pushing the limits of what is possible with infrared spectroscopy at $8-10$-meter class facilities by requiring up to several nights of observing time per target. Therefore, the observation of multiple objects simultaneously with adaptive optics is absolutely necessary to make effective use of telescope time and obtain statistically significant samples for high redshift science. With an expected commissioning date of 2023, GIRMOS's capabilities will also make it a key followup instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope when it is launched in 2021, as well as a true scientific and technical pathfinder for future Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) multi-object spectroscopic instrumentation. Spinterface engineering has shown quite important roles in organic spintronics as it can improve spin injection or extraction. In this study, 11,11,12,12-tetracyanonaptho-2,6-quinodimethane (TNAP) is introduced as an interfacial layer for a prototype interface of Fe/TNAP. We report an element-specific investigation of the electronic and magnetic structures of Fe/TNAP system by use of near edge X-Ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Strong hybridization between TNAP and Fe and induced magnetization of N atoms in TNAP molecule are observed. XMCD sum rule analysis demonstrates that the adsorption of TNAP reduces the spin moment of Fe by 12%. In addition, induced magnetization in N K-edge of TNAP has also been found with other commonly used ferromagnets in organic spintronics, such as La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and permalloy, which makes TNAP a very promising molecule for spinterface engineering in organic spintronics., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figure, 1 table

The kinetics of the charge carrier recombination in dye molecule-doped multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was quantified by transient electroluminescence (EL). Three sets of dye molecules, such as derivatives of naphthalimide and stilbene, were used as dopants in light-emission layer. Although the devices show almost the same EL spectra for each set of molecules, they show very different EL efficiency. The difference in EL efficiency was attributed to the difference in charge carrier recombination, as revealed by transient EL. The recombination coefficient ({\gamma}) was determined from the long-time component of the temporal decay of the EL intensity after a rectangular voltage pulse was turned off. It was found that {\gamma} and EL efficiency were both strongly dependent on the molecular structures of the dopants, and the donor groups and {\pi}-conjugated structure guaranteed high {\gamma} and EL efficiency in OLEDs., Comment: in press
