Emotional intelligence has been considered an important construct by schools and universities because of its theoretical importance and practical implications. Considerable resources and time have been spent by the educational institutions to develop the emotional skills of their students. The present meta-analysis aimed at studying the relationship of emotional intelligence, including its three theoretical models, with academic performance while accounting for age and gender as moderators. "Robumeta" package was used for the meta-analysis of multilevel random effects with robust variance estimation (RVE) in R version 4.0.3. Effect sizes were calculated and meta-regression analysis with RVE was used to assess the relationship with the moderator variables. A positive and significant overall relationship was found between emotional intelligence and academic performance (ρ = 0.19). The moderating effect of emotional intelligence with gender streams on emotional intelligence and academic performance's relationship was examined through meta-regression with robust variance estimation and sub-group analyses. Whereas the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance was not found to be moderated by age, it was found to be partially mediated by gender.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this review however is to focus on the “protective” role given by PC in every body tissue it is present in regardless of species (human or animal). It is also intended to compile a secondary list of environmental stressors that can affect PC with the corresponding changes that occur, so that there can be convenient access to all the summarized findings. OBJECTIVE To review the protective role played by primary cilia against injurious or toxic elements in the surrounding environment. METHODS Randomized control trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews were searched for using Cochrane/EMBASE, PubMed/Medline, and PEDro databases between the years 1966-2021. Studies published in English only were included, and two reviewers were involved in the data extraction process. RESULTS Primary cilia serve a protective role from different stressors in certain body tissues of different species. The mechanisms known include autophagy, generation of heat shock proteins and expression of certain genes. In animal models, primary cilia are protective in neurons of mice, gills of fish, and the body of coral. Further protective roles in other organisms, particularly humans, have yet to be elucidated. CONCLUSIONS The exact range of protective function conferred by primary cilia has yet to be discovered, and what little result we have obtained from animal studies prove that primary cilia have an indispensable role in modulating an organism’s survival.

Stroke is the second most common cause of death and dementia and the first most common cause of disability in developed nations. Tissue in the penumbra may be salvaged by reperfusion treatment using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator or thrombectomy with a stent retriever, which improves the ultimate neurological prognosis. However, because of the limited therapeutic window of 6 hours, it is only available to 5–10% of the community. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has recently gotten a lot of interest for its potential involvement in stroke recovery. When used correctly, NIBS methods employ electrical and magnetic stimulation to modify the excitability of deep brain tissue without harming it. This may result in long-term neuroplastic modifications. Based on different protocols, stimulation to the cerebral cortex can be either excitatory or inhibitory. This has led to NIBS being used therapeutically to alleviate depression. In recent years, stroke patients have been studied to see whether NIBS has therapeutic benefits on cognitive skills.

The present study examined the relationship of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) and academic achievement (GPA). Analyses were performed using a sample of Saudi-origin medical rehabilitation undergraduate students (One hundred thirty medical rehabilitation students completed the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF). Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were carried out to elucidate relationships (or the lack of the same) between various variables.Whole sample alpha coefficient value for global trait EI was 0.84, while the same for trait EI factors ranged from 0.51 to 0.76. Global Trait EI was found higher in males than in females (Female students median score: 17 ± 2.56 VS Male students median score: 18 ± 3.67; U: 1667, p 0.04). A positive and statistically significant relationship was found between Well-being and the three other factors (with Self-control [r(128), 0.413, p 0.01]; with Emotionality [r(128), 0.518, p 0.01], with Sociability [r(128), 0.490, p 0.01]). Sociability was found to have a similar positive relationship with Self-control [r(128), 0.239, p 0.05] and Emotionality [r(128), 0.490, p 0.01] respectively. Furthermore, GPA was found to have a negative (not statistically significant) relation with Sociability. Overall, there was no association found between trait EI and GPA.The present study is one of two studies that has investigated the train EI-academic achievement link in healthcare-related students. Our findings resonate with existing literature on the subject.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) in elderly patients is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. The pathogenesis of PD is associated with dopaminergic neuron degeneration of the substantia nigra in the basal ganglia, causing classic motor symptoms. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation have been identified as possible pathways in laboratory investigations. Nutrition, a potentially versatile factor from all environmental factors affecting PD, has received intense research scrutiny. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and WEB OF SCIENCE databases from 2000 until the present. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs), observational case–control studies, and follow-up studies were included. Results: We retrieved fifty-two studies that met the inclusion criteria. Most selected studies investigated the effects of malnutrition and the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) on PD incidence and progression. Other investigations contributed evidence on the critical role of microbiota, vitamins, polyphenols, dairy products, coffee, and alcohol intake. Conclusions: There are still many concerns regarding the association between PD and nutrition, possibly due to underlying genetic and environmental factors. However, there is a body of evidence revealing that correcting malnutrition, gut microbiota, and following the MeDiet reduced the onset of PD and reduced clinical progression. Other factors, such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and coffee intake, can have a potential protective effect. Conversely, milk and its accessory products can increase PD risk. Nutritional intervention is essential for neurologists to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the disease progression of PD.

Background Stroke is a neurological disorder and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. The patient may lose the ability to adequately move the extremities, perceive sensations, or ambulate independently. Recent experimental studies have reported the beneficial influence of virtual reality training strategies on improving overall functional abilities for stroke survivors. Methods Conducted a systematic review of the literature using the following keywords to retrieve the data: stroke, virtual reality, motor deficits, neurorehabilitation, cognitive impairments, and sensory deficits. A random-effect meta-analysis was performed for seven scales - one cognitive (MMSE) and six motor (Fugl-Meyer, Berg Balance Scale, Time up and go, Wolf motor function, 10 m walk, Brunnstrom score). Objective To organize and compare all the available data regarding the effectiveness of virtual reality for stroke rehabilitation. Results This literature reviewed 150 studies and included 46 for qualitative and 27 for quantitative analysis. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in MMSE score (MD = 0.24, 95%CI = ((-0.42) -(0.9)), p = .47, I2 = 0%) and Fugl-Meyer score (MD = (-0.38), 95%CI = ((-12.88)-(12.11)), p = .95, I2 = 98%) . The statistical significance was not reached in any of the other outcomes. Conclusions This review supports that stroke rehabilitation programs incorporating virtual reality are associated with improved functional outcomes, but there is no statistically significant difference compared to standard therapy.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is considered as the most common cause of dementia in elderly population. While the exact mechanism of AD has not been discovered, hyperbolic oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been proven to be effective in the treatment of this degenerative disease. The objectives of this article are to review the literature available on molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying HBOT and its efficacy in treating AD and to review the effectiveness of HBOT as an alternate treatment intervention in both human and animal models. 391 full text articles were included in the review after literature search between 1980–2021 from two online data base (ScienceDirect and PubMed). The following key words were used: ‘hyperbaric oxygen therapy’ and ‘Alzheimer disease.’ Based on the outcomes of clinical and experimental studies, this review advocates the use of HBOT for the treatment of AD. This review explores future directions and recommends further research into a treatment protocol that will maintain long-term cognitive health of AD patients.

The developing brain is under the risk of exposure to a multitude of environmental stressors. While perinatal exposure to excessive levels of environmental stress is responsible for a wide spectrum of neurological and psychiatric conditions, the developing brain is equipped with intrinsic cell protection, the mechanisms of which remain unknown. Here we show, using neonatal mouse as a model system, that primary cilia, hair-like protrusions from the neuronal cell body, play an essential role in protecting immature neurons from the negative impacts of exposure to environmental stress. More specifically, we found that primary cilia prevent the degeneration of dendritic arbors upon exposure to alcohol and ketamine, two major cell stressors, by activating cilia-localized insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor and downstream Akt signaling. We also found that activation of this pathway inhibits Caspase-3 activation and caspase-mediated cleavage/fragmentation of cytoskeletal proteins in stress-exposed neurons. These results indicate that primary cilia play an integral role in mitigating adverse impacts of environmental stressors such as drugs on perinatal brain development.
