The idea of an economy taking a geographical journey highlights the importance of changing spatialities and how these shape and result from economic change. It also focuses on the geographical scaling of key processes. Using these insights, this paper explores three decades of economic change in Australia in which the nation State has played a central role in the operation of markets and accumulation processes, albeit with dramatic shifts in the qualitative nature of that role. Such shifts have been crucial during the emergence of Australia's particular variety of neoliberalism. The paper explores the liberalisation of Australia's financial and corporate environment, trade policies and the industrial relations environment. The three cases suggest contradictions inherent in the State's adherence to a neoliberal reform agenda, in the name of globalisation, while facing: first, political needs to retain sovereignty over national security and tighten border protection; and second, multi-scaled political processes including clashes with State governments grappling with regional and local impacts of change. There has been no simple roll-out of neoliberalism in Australia since the mid 1990s. Geographical scales, constructed contingently by social and political agents, have contributed in fundamental ways to the power and direction of economic reform. Despite powerful re-scalings to both global and local levels over the past three decades, there is no evidence of a diminished role for the nation State.

Over the past decade, the urban condition of Sydney has been increasingly discussed using the language of globalization. Yet the increasing sensitivity of global city theorists to issues of representation alert us to the problems of confidently using the global as an adjective to describe two nouns (Sydney and city) of uncertain mooring. We review various uses of these signifiers by territorially embedded and embodied actors ( journalists, academics and politicians), and suggest that to unreflectively label either the whole or some parts of this metropolis 'global' is a deeply problematic process.

During the past 15 years metropolitan planning strategies of the NSW state government have done little to address the spatial distribution of either employment or labour market equity within the metropolis. In the fast-growing outer western suburbs, the government has focused on attracting business investment to increase the stock of local jobs and to improve employment 'self-sufficiency' - a dominantly neoliberal policy framework. This paper explores a widening gulf between the reality of outer urban change and this policy framework by considering changes in the location of jobs and in the employment experiences of residents in Greater Western Sydney (GWS). Evidence is drawn from census journey-to-work data (1991-2001). While holding a majority of manufacturing jobs in Sydney, GWS also experienced continued growth of jobs in service industries during the 1990s. Yet the relative importance of employment in the city's fast-growth finance and business services sector still lags well behind that of inner and northern parts of the city. The focus on growing the regional stock of jobs has not addressed problems of labour market access faced by residents of particular localities and the goal of employment self-sufficiency has not delivered greater equity to outer suburban labour markets. A focus on sufficiency of access to employment for residents of GWS draws attention not only to regional stocks of jobs but also to the provision of social infrastructure and state-provided services to outer suburban populations as they continue to expand.

The article discusses Australian government's future sustainability of its own food supplies considering the effects of climate change and environmental degradation on food agriculture. The idea of localisation and the further loss of Sydney Basin's prime agricultural land are also discussed. A diagram of food agriculture in Sydney Basin for 2003-2008, a bar graph of New South Wales' total vegetable production by region in 2003, a local map distribution of various land use, and 21 study guide items students could work on are presented.

The article examines the concept of food-miles as applied on the food sustainability and climate change issues in Sydney, New South Wales, in 2008. Originating from Great Britain, food-miles refers to the total distance food travels from farm to the consumers. Reasons for the increase of food-miles in Sydney involve the high level of food importation, energy-intensive climate control, food production of supermarket chains, and availability of local foods.
