Abstract

In this paper, we evaluate morphological changes related to the Plan d'Arem dam (1970), a run-of-river (RoR) dam located on the Upper Garonne (central Pyrenees), and disentangle its morphological effects from other drivers (post-Little Ice Age [LIA] climate change, changes in agricultural practice, catchment afforestation, up stream damming, and bypassing). The work is based on a before-after-control-impact approach, a space-time framework that allowed the stating of four hypotheses distinguishing the effects of the considered dam from other pressures. We first examined the potential reduction to the flow regime (QL) and bedload transport (QS) from these pressures, then assessed planimetric changes (1942–2019), vertical evolution (1922–2014), and sediment size within the channel. The results show the river completed adjustments related to post-LIA climate change and catchment afforestation at the beginning of the study period, with channel narrowing affecting the whole study reach and ranging from 0.6% to 1.2% yr− 1 . Upstream dams and catchment afforestation reduced both the frequency and magnitude of peak flows and sediment supply, resulting in an increase in the channel narrowing rate on the upstream sub-reach (− 1.2% yr− 1 ). However, downstream tributaries buffered these changes, and no downstream propagation was found. The effects of the Plan d'Arem started around 15 yr after its construction, with channel narrowing at a rate of 0.9% yr− 1 until the 2010s. The exceptional flood of June 2013 resulted in important channel widening followed by a new period of narrowing upstream of the Plan d'Arem dam, combined with channel stability downstream caused by a new dam management regime (flushing actions). We conclude that the before-after-control-impact approach is effective for isolating the effects of an RoR dam from those of other pressures, and that flushing actions mitigated the effects of the dam. Abstract

Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas., Soil degradation by water is a serious environmental problem worldwide, with specific climatic factors being the major causes. We investigated the relationships between synoptic atmospheric patterns (i.e. weather types, WTs) and runoff, erosion and sediment yield throughout the Mediterranean basin by analyzing a large database of natural rainfall events at 68 research sites in 9 countries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify spatial relationships of the different WTs including three hydro-sedimentary variables: rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield (SY, used to refer to both soil erosion measured at plot scale and sediment yield registered at catchment scale). The results indicated 4 spatial classes of rainfall and runoff: (a) northern sites dependent on North (N) and North West (NW) flows; (b) eastern sites dependent on E and NE flows; (c) southern sites dependent on S and SE flows; and, finally, (d) western sites dependent on W and SW flows. Conversely, three spatial classes are identified for SY characterized by: (a) N and NE flows in northern sites (b) E flows in eastern sites, and (c) Wand SW flows in western sites. Most of the rainfall, runoff and SY occurred during a small number of daily events, and just a few WTs accounted for large percentages of the total. Our results confirm that characterization by WT improves understanding of the general conditions under which runoff and SY occur, and provides useful information for understanding the spatial variability of runoff, and SY throughout the Mediterranean basin. 3. Modeling landslide activity and sediment connectivity after eruptions: Insights from the Blanco River (Chile).

Abstract

Volcanic eruptions can disrupt entire river basins by affecting the hydro-geomorphic characteristics of channel networks and hillslopes. Reports suggest a pulsed and delayed increase in landslide activity following the eruptions, which, depending on the degree of linkage between hillslopes and channels, i.e. sediment connectivity, can represent a massive source of sediment input for the fluvial system. Therefore, predicting landslide occurrence and sediment connectivity is fundamental for management risk strategies, especially in such dynamic and complex environments. The aim of this work is to develop and offer a more reliable approach to map the areas susceptible to landslides and connected to the active channel in a catchment impacted by volcanic eruption. The analyses were carried out in the Blanco River catchment in southern Chile, affected by the Chaitén eruption (2008-09). A combined approach is presented, based on landslide susceptibility models, carried out multi-temporally (from 2010 to 2019), and a threshold-based sediment connectivity map. The results showed that the highest landslide occurrence was reported 4 years after the eruption, whereas the faster increase in the overall area affected was observed only after 7 years. Landslide susceptibility models showed high accuracy when applied in the same year, but were less accurate in predicting future occurrences. This result is ascribed to the dynamic conditions of the vegetation, regenerating quickly after the mass movements. Nevertheless, considering the potential sources of error, the combined landslide susceptibility-connectivity map for the year 2019 well-identified relevant areas for catchment management. The largest part of the catchment was found non-susceptible and disconnected, while areas classified as susceptible and connected represent only 3.1 %. 4. Bed-material entrainment in a mountain river affected by hydropeaking.

Abstract

Hydropeaking, by artificially generated flow peaks, influences hydro-sedimentary dynamics on rivers and, consequently, affects bed material entrainment and transport. This study examines the onset of motion of sediment particles in four sections of a Pyrenean gravel-to-cobble bed river exposed to frequent hydropeaking (once per day, on average). Five criteria of particle entrainment have been used to assess the prediction of the initiation of grain motion at-a-section scale. Theoretical entrainment conditions were validated using real observations of mobility by means of tracers. It was found that the maximum flow discharged by the hydropower plant mostly affects the furthest downstream section, located almost 17 km downstream, in which the finer fractions of the bed are entrained. The mobile grain sizes include up to coarse gravels (≈ 30 mm). Differences in sediment supply (imposed by tributaries), the value of the bed slope and the structure of the coarse surface layer decisively control the downstream variability of incipient particle motion between sections. 5. Water and sediment budgets unveiling contrasting hydro-sedimentary patterns in a mountainous Mediterranean catchment.

Abstract

Mountain regions have a key role in the generation of runoff, and in the production and transfer of sediments to fluvial networks, especially in Mediterranean catchments where these processes are affected by marked changes in climate and land use (i.e. global change). This paper presents the water and the sediment budgets of the Ribera Salada (224 km 2 ), a meso-scale Mediterranean forested catchment located in the Southern Pyrenees. Field monitoring follows an integrated basins scheme (five nested sub-catchments), where hydrological and sediment transport data were collected continuously over a two-year period (2012-2013). Precipitation was obtained using radar images, which allowed the elaboration of rainfall maps used to characterize the spatial distribution of rainfall across multiple scales. Results indicate that the catchment is hydrologically divided in two areas which show contrasting fluvial regimes: the upper part of the catchment is considered wet and has a constant flow regime, supplying the majority of the water, while the lower part is drier, with ephemeral tributaries and water losses into the alluvial aquifer of the main river channel. In contrast to water yield, most of the suspended sediment load (i.e. 80%) is supplied by the driest part of the catchment where sediment availability was greater and where there is a greater connectivity between sediment sources and the channel network. The sediment yield of the whole catchment and the respective sub-catchments sits in the lower bounds of values reported for the Mediterranean region, indicating the generally low intensity of hydrological and geomorphic processes in the area. 6. Downstream changes of particle entrainment in a hydropeaked river.

Abstract

Hydropeaking, through artificially generated flow peaks, affects hydro-sedimentary dynamics on rivers. The frequency and magnitude of such artificial flow pulses impact sedimentary process and, inevitably, affects bed-material entrainment. This study analyses the entrainment of particles in six sections of a Pyrenean river under frequent hydropeaking. Three equations of particle entrainment with contrasting behaviours, validated for particle mobility from tracer data, have been used to predict the initiation of motion in each section. Results show that the peak discharge generated by the hydropower station mostly affects the section immediately downstream from the hydropower plant, where the finer fractions of the bed are mobilised. The mobile grain sizes include fine to medium gravels (< 20mm). Channel geometry and higher slopes also have an effect on particle entrainment. 7. Assessing the effect of fire severity on sediment connectivity in central Chile.

Abstract

Chilean territory is recurrently affected by severe wildfires, which drastically reduce the forest cover and promote runoff, soil erosion and slope instabilities. To understand how the geomorphic system responds to wildfires in terms of sediment dynamics, the assessment of sediment connectivity, i.e. the property describing the relationships between compartments of a geomorphic system, is crucial. This study aims to quantify the spatial linkages between fire severity and sediment connectivity to identify common patterns and driving factors. The compound use of field data and open-source satellite imagery helped to apply the Relative differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (RdNBR) and the Index of Connectivity (IC) in the context of two consecutive wildfires, occurred in 2002 and 2015, in the Rio Toro catchment (Chile). The fire severity assessment showed that the 2002 event affected 90% of the catchment, with high severity areas representing around 70%. The 2015 wildfire instead, affected 76% of the catchment with moderate severity around 42%. Accordingly, as result of the sudden reduction in forest cover in severely affected areas, the IC changed after both wildfires with an overall increase of 1.07 and 0.54, respectively. However, only for the second disturbance, it was possible to observe a clear relationship between the RdNBR and the IC variations. The different degree of vegetation cover heterogeneity between the two pre-wildfire scenarios contributed to different fire severity and IC variability between the two disturbances. 8. Sediment connectivity changes in an Andean catchment affected by volcanic eruption.

Abstract

River systems are continuously affected by multiple natural and anthropogenic phenomena. Among major natural disturbances, volcanic eruptions have the capability to overthrow the forms and to modify dramatically the morphological setting and sediment connectivity of the system. Moreover, the input of sediments in the channel network can lead to active channel widening, bed aggradation and river scouring, which in turn may affect downstream human settlements. In this context, the present research aims to investigate sediment connectivity by means of a geomorphometric index in a catchment affected by an explosive volcanic eruption in order to assess its variation before and after the disturbance. We developed a workflow exploiting the use of open source data (i.e., Global Digital Elevation Models, satellite imagery) to represent the impedance to the sediment fluxes and to apply the Index of Connectivity (IC) in this context characterized by the lack of high-resolution topographic data. The study area is the Blanco River basin, southern Chile, which was heavily affected by the eruption of Chaitén volcano (2008-2009) that caused the partial destruction of the forest and the profound alteration of Blanco River's morphology. The application of the IC on different land cover scenarios, derived by combining field observations and satellite image classification techniques, showed an increase in sediment connectivity after the volcanic eruption. In addition, the results highlighted different patterns of connectivity according to the expansion of the active channel induced by the massive input of pyroclastic material. The approach proposed in this study case offers a methodology to investigate sediment connectivity in a river catchment affected by natural disturbance where high-resolution data are not available. 9. Tackling reservoir siltation by controlled sediment flushing: Impact on downstream fauna and related management issues.

Abstract

Sediment flushing can tackle reservoirs siltation and improve sediment flux through dammed rivers. However, the increase of the sediment loading below the dam can trigger a suite of undesired ecological effects in the downstream river reaches. To limit these drawbacks, sediment flushing can be controlled, by jointly regulating the sediment concentration of the evacuated water and the streamflow in the downstream channel. In this paper, we report on ten controlled sediment flushing operations (CSFOs), carried out between 2006 and 2012 in the central Italian Alps, at four hydropower reservoirs. These CSFOs displayed specific common traits: (i) Limits were set by the local environmental authorities concerning the allowable suspended sediment concentration. (ii) Reservoirs were fully drawn-down, earth-moving equipment was used to dislodge sediment, and the downstream water discharge was increased, compared to baseflow, by operating upstream intakes. (iii) Abiotic and biotic measurements in selected downstream reaches (before, during, and after the CSFOs) represented an integral part of the operations. In contrast, significant differences characterize the hydropower facilities (elevation and storage of reservoirs, in particular) as well as the basic CSFOs parameters (i.e., season, duration, mass and grain-size of the evacuated sediment, suspended sediment concentration). The macroinvertebrate assemblages resulted noticeably impacted by the CSFOs. In the short term, a significant density drop was observed, slightly influenced by the extent of the perturbation. In contrast, the latter appeared to control the assemblages contraction in terms of richness, according to the different sensitivity to sediment stress of the different taxa. The time employed to recover pre-CSFO standard ranged from few months to just under one year, and the related patterns would seem mostly correlated to the flushing season and to further site specificities. The density of trout populations was impacted as well, thus suggesting the adoption of mitigating strategies as removal by electrofishing before, and repopulation after the CSFO., Competing Interests: We note that two authors (GG and MLB) are employed by a commercial company (Graia S.r.l. and Pavia Acque S.c.a.r.l. respectively). 10. Cascading processes in a changing environment: Disturbances on fluvial ecosystems in Chile and implications for hazard and risk management.

Abstract

The compound hazard effects of multiple process cascades severely affect Chilean river systems and result in a large variety of disturbances on their ecosystems and alterations of their hydromorphologic regimes leading to extreme impacts on society, environment and infrastructure. The acute, neo-tectonically pre-determined susceptibility to seismic hazards, the widespread volcanic activity, the increasing glacier retreat and the continuous exposure to forest fires clearly disturb entire riverine systems and concur to trigger severe floods hazards. With the objective to refine the understanding of such cascading processes and to prospect feasible flood risk management strategies in such a rapidly changing environment we first classify the large river basins according to a set of disturbances (i.e. volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, glacier lake outburst floods, wild fires and mass movements). Then, we describe emblematic cases of process cascades which affected specific Chilean drainage basins and resulted in high losses as tangible examples of how the cascading processes may unfold in other river basins with similar characteristics. As an attempt to enrich the debate among management authorities and academia in Chile, and elsewhere, on how to sustainably manage river systems, we: a) highlight the pivotal need to determine the possible process cascades that may profoundly alter the system and b) we suggest to refine hazard and risk assessments accordingly, accounting for the current and future exposure. 11. Long term flow change threatens invertebrate diversity in temporary streams: Evidence from an island.

Abstract

Here we provide the first evidence of long term reductions in flow in temporary streams on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca and use a simple metric of the degree of water permanence (the number of days with water) to highlight the implications of flow change for aquatic invertebrate diversity. Analysis of a 33year data set for 13 streams on the island yielded evidence of consistent downward trends in water permanence, particularly in spring and summer. Data from 27 relatively undisturbed mountain streams indicate that the diversity of benthic invertebrates in temporary streams across the island is directly related to water permanence. Streams with lower values of water permanence support few species overall and have less abundant invertebrate assemblages; the abundance and species richness of sensitive mayfly, stonefly and caddisfly taxonomic groups is also reduced in streams with lower water permanence. Although developed using spatial data, these flow-invertebrate relationships suggest that future reductions in water permanence may lead to reduced diversity. We argue that the 'number of days with water' is a simple but ecologically-relevant metric of water permanence that can be used effectively to monitor change in threatened temporary streams worldwide., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
