Abstract: International audience; Context. Serendipitous X-ray surveys have proven to be an efficient way to find rare objects, for example tidal disruption events, changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN), binary quasars, ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), and intermediate mass black holes. With the advent of very large X-ray surveys, an automated classification of X-ray sources becomes increasingly valuable.Aims. This work proposes a revisited naive Bayes classification of the X-ray sources in the Swift-XRT and XMM-Newton catalogs into four classes − AGN, stars, X-ray binaries (XRBs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs) − based on their spatial, spectral and timing properties and their multiwavelength counterparts. An outlier measure is used to identify objects of other natures. The classifier is optimized to maximize the classification performance of a chosen class (here XRBs) and it is adapted to data mining purposes.Methods. We augmented the X-ray catalogs with multiwavelength data, source class, and variability properties. We then built a reference sample of about 25000 X-ray sources of known nature. From this sample the distribution of each property was carefully estimated and taken as reference to assign probabilities of belonging to each class. The classification was then performed on the whole catalog, combining the information from each property.Results. Using the algorithm on the Swift reference sample we retrieved 99%, 98%, 92% and 34% of AGN, stars, XRBs, and CVs, respectively, and the false positive rates are 3%, 1%, 9% and 15%. Similar results are obtained on XMM sources. When applied to a carefully selected test sample, representing 55% of the X-ray catalog, the classification gives consistent results in terms of distributions of source properties. A substantial fraction of sources not belonging to any class is efficiently retrieved using the outlier measure, as well as AGN and stars with properties deviating from the bulk of their class. Our algorithm is then compared to a random forest method; the two showed similar performances but the algorithm presented in this paper improved insight into the grounds of each classification.Conclusions. This robust classification method can be tailored to include additional or different source classes and can be applied to other X-ray catalogs. The transparency of the classification compared to other methods makes it a useful tool in the search for homogeneous populations or rare source types, including multi-messenger events. Such a tool will be increasingly valuable with the development of surveys of unprecedented size, such as LSST, SKA and Athena, and the search for counterparts of multi-messenger events.

Abstract: We consider a class of power-logarithmic germs. We call them parabolic Dulac germs, as they appear as Dulac germs (first-return germs) of hyperbolic polycycles. In view of formal or analytic characterization of such a germ f by fractal properties of several of its orbits, we study the tubular $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhoods of orbits of f with initial points $$x_0$$ . We denote by $$A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ the length of such a tubular $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhood. We show that, even if f is an analytic germ, the function $$\varepsilon \mapsto A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ does not have a full asymptotic expansion in $$\varepsilon $$ in the scale of powers and (iterated) logarithms. Hence, this partial asymptotic expansion cannot contain necessary information for analytic classification. In order to overcome this problem, we introduce a new notion: the continuous time length of the $$\varepsilon $$ -neighborhood $$A^c_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ . We show that this function has a full transasymptotic expansion in $$\varepsilon $$ in the power, iterated logarithm scale. Moreover, its asymptotic expansion extends the initial, existing part of the asymptotic expansion of the classical length $$\varepsilon \mapsto A_f(x_0,\varepsilon )$$ . Finally, we prove that this initial part of the asymptotic expansion determines the class of formal conjugacy of the Dulac germ f.

Abstract: Theory of singularities has been closely related with the study of oscillatory integrals. More precisely, the study of critical points is closely related to the study of asymptotic of oscillatory integrals. In our work we investigate the fractal properties of a geometrical representation of oscillatory integrals. We are motivated by a geometrical representation of Fresnel integrals by a spiral called the clothoid, and the idea to produce a classification of singularities using fractal dimension. Fresnel integrals are a well known class of oscillatory integrals. We consider oscillatory integral $$ I(\tau)=\int_{; ; \mathbb{; ; R}; ; ^n}; ; e^{; ; i\tau f(x)}; ; \phi(x) dx, $$ for large values of real parameter $\tau$, where $f$ is the analytic phase and $\phi$ is the smooth amplitude with a compact support. We measure the oscillatority by Minkowski dimension of the planar curve parameterized by functions $X$ and $Y$ that are the real and imaginary parts of the integral $I$, respectively. Also, the oscillatory dimension is defined as Minkowski dimension of the graph of function $x(t) = X(1/t)$, near $t=0$, and analogously for $Y$. We provide explicit formulas connecting these Minkowski dimensions and associated Minkowski contents with asymptotics of the integral $I$ and the type of the critical point of the phase $f$. Techniques used include Newton diagrams and the resolution of singularities.

Abstract: Fundamental radiation limitations of in-body or implantable antennas should give us an estimate on the feasibility of some desired system. It was shown that near-field effects and distance to the body - free space boundary are critical aspects, while the shape doesn’t play a major role in the achievable power. Through the frequency analysis of these limitations in this paper we provide another perspective and show how rigorous and approximate approach to near-field and reflection losses manifest in the results. This is demonstrated on a spherical body example which contains a small spherical implant which can be placed at different positions within the body in order to simulate different implant depths. The results reveal that reasonably accurate description of in-body loss mechanisms can be achieved using our previously defined fundamental radiation limitations for power density, however, depending on the frequency different loss aspects must be treated with special care.

Abstract: We propose a novel weakly supervised localization method based on Fisher-embedding of low-level features (CNN, SIFT), and model sparsity at the component level. Fisher-embedding provides an interesting alternative to raw low-level features, since it allows fast and accurate scoring of image subwindows with a model trained on entire images. Model sparsity reduces overfitting and enables fast evaluation. We also propose two new techniques for improving performance when our method is combined with nonlinear normalizations of the aggregated Fisher representation of the image. These techniques are (i) intra-component metric normalization and (ii) first-order approximation to the score of a normalized image representation. We evaluate our weakly supervised localization method on real traffic scenes acquired from driver’s perspective. The method dramatically improves the localization AP over the dense non-normalized Fisher vector baseline (16 percentage points for zebra crossings, 21 percentage points for traffic signs) and leads to a huge gain in execution speed (91 × for zebra crossings, 74 × for traffic signs).

Abstract: International audience; Thin artificial surfaces that act as high frequency bandgap structures have been recently studied for the design of gap waveguides, hard surfaces, and planar lenses. Here, we propose a circuit-based method to analyze glide-symmetric corrugated metasurfaces that are embedded in a thin parallel plate waveguide. Our closed-form solution is based on rigorous analytical derivations. It achieves remarkable agreement with full-wave solvers, even when the waveguide thickness is extremely thin. In contrast, classical homogenization approaches are shown to be inaccurate for thin waveguides due to the interaction of higher order Floquet modes between the surfaces. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show the utility of the proposed method.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an analysis of time-domain electromagnetic (EM) field coupling to transmission lines. The time-domain 3D EM simulation of the field-to-line coupling system is performed using the uniform plane wave excitation defined by the broadband Gaussian pulse. An analytic background is given to justify usage of the simulated time-domain response as an impulse response of the field-to-line coupling system. The simulated impulse response relates the induced voltages at the transmission line terminals to the EM plane wave excitation. By knowing the impulse response it is possible to predict induced terminal voltages for arbitrarily defined time-domain EM fields. This approach is validated by measurements of the EM field coupling in a transverse electromagnetic mode (TEM) cell and on a printed circuit board (PCB) transmission lines. Very good agreement is obtained between the measured results and results obtained by the convolution for various orientations of the transmission lines and various load impedances.

Abstract: International audience; The profiled side-channel analysis represents the most powerful category of side-channel attacks. In this context, the security eval-uator (i.e., attacker) gains access to a profiling device to build a precise model which is used to attack another device in the attacking phase. Mostly, it is assumed that the attacker has significant capabilities in the profiling phase, whereas the attacking phase is very restricted. We step away from this assumption and consider an attacker restricted in the profiling phase, while the attacking phase is less limited. We propose the concept of semi-supervised learning for side-channel analysis, where the attacker uses a small number of labeled measurements from the profiling phase as well as the unlabeled measurements from the attacking phase to build a more reliable model. Our results show that the semi-supervised concept significantly helps the template attack (TA) and its pooled version (TAp). More specifically, for low noise scenario, the results for machine learning techniques and TA are often improved when only a small number of measurements is available in the profiling phase, while there is no significant difference in scenarios where the supervised set is large enough for reliable classification. For high noise scenario, TAp and multilayer perceptron results are improved for the majority of inspected dataset sizes, while for high noise scenario with added countermeasures, we show a small improvement for TAp, Naive Bayes and multilayer per-ceptron approaches for most inspected dataset sizes. Current results go in favor of using semi-supervised learning, especially self-training approach, in side-channel attacks.

Abstract: Metasurfaces are thin two-dimensional metamaterial layers that allow or inhibit the propagation of electromagnetic waves in desired directions. For example, metasurfaces have been demonstrated to produce unusual scattering properties of incident plane waves or to guide and modulate surface waves to obtain desired radiation properties. These properties have been employed, for example, to create innovative wireless receivers and transmitters. In addition, metasurfaces have recently been proposed to confine electromagnetic waves, thereby avoiding undesired leakage of energy and increasing the overall efficiency of electromagnetic instruments and devices. The main advantages of metasurfaces with respect to the existing conventional technology include their low cost, low level of absorption in comparison with bulky metamaterials, and easy integration due to their thin profile. Due to these advantages, they are promising candidates for real-world solutions to overcome the challenges posed by the next generation of transmitters and receivers of future high-rate communication systems that require highly precise and efficient antennas, sensors, active components, filters, and integrated technologies. This Roadmap is aimed at binding together the experiences of prominent researchers in the field of metasurfaces, from which explanations for the physics behind the extraordinary properties of these structures shall be provided from viewpoints of diverse theoretical backgrounds. Other goals of this endeavour are to underline the advantages and limitations of metasurfaces, as well as to lay out guidelines for their use in present and future electromagnetic devices. This Roadmap is divided into five sections: 1. Metasurface based antennas. In the last few years, metasurfaces have shown possibilities for advanced manipulations of electromagnetic waves, opening new frontiers in the design of antennas. In this section, the authors explain how metasurfaces can be employed to tailor the radiation properties of antennas, their remarkable advantages in comparison with conventional antennas, and the future challenges to be solved. 2. Optical metasurfaces. Although many of the present demonstrators operate in the microwave regime, due either to the reduced cost of manufacturing and testing or to satisfy the interest of the communications or aerospace industries, part of the potential use of metasurfaces is found in the optical regime. In this section, the authors summarize the classical applications and explain new possibilities for optical metasurfaces, such as the generation of superoscillatory fields and energy harvesters. 3. Reconfigurable and active metasurfaces. Dynamic metasurfaces are promising new platforms for 5G communications, remote sensing and radar applications. By the insertion of active elements, metasurfaces can break the fundamental limitations of passive and static systems. In this section, we have contributions that describe the challenges and potential uses of active components in metasurfaces, including new studieson non-Foster, parity-time symmetric, and non-reciprocal metasurfaces. 4. Metasurfaces with higher symmetries. Recent studies have demonstrated that the properties of metasurfaces are influenced by the symmetries of their constituent elements. Therefore, by controlling the properties of these constitutive elements and their arrangement, one can control the way in which the waves interact with the metasurface. In this section, the authors analyze the possibilities of combining more than one layer of metasurface, creating a higher symmetry, increasing the operational bandwidth of flat lenses, or producing cost-effective electromagnetic bandgaps. 5. Numerical and analytical modelling of metasurfaces. In most occasions, metasurfaces are electrically large objects, which cannot be simulated with conventional software. Modelling tools that allow the engineering of the metasurface properties to get the desired response are essential in the design of practical electromagnetic devices. This section includes the recent advances and future challenges in three groups of techniques that are broadly used to analyze and synthesize metasurfaces: circuit models, analytical solutions and computational methods.

Abstract: First return maps in the neighborhood of hyperbolic polycycles have their asymptotic expansion as Dulac series, which are series with power-logarithm monomials. We extend the class of Dulac series to an algebra of power-logarithm transseries. Inside this new algebra, we provide formal normal forms of power-log transseries and a formal embedding theorem. The questions of classifications and of embeddings of germs into flows of vector fields are common problems in dynamical systems. Aside from that, our motivation for this work comes from fractal analysis of orbits of first return maps around hyperbolic polycycles. This is a joint work with Pavao Mardešić, Jean-Philippe Rolin and Vesna Županović.

Abstract: International audience; We study the wave propagation between two glide-symmetric metallic plates drilled with periodic rectangular holes. A mode-matching method is proposed in order to derive efficiently the dispersive properties of these periodic structures. The method takes advantage of the higher symmetry of the structure reducing the computational cost by enforcing boundary conditions on the field on only one of the two surfaces. Physical insight on specific symmetry properties of Floquet harmonics in glide-symmetric structures is also gained. The code is validated with commercial software assessing its accuracy when varying the most influential/critical parameters. We confirm the potential of glide-symmetric structures to tune the effective refractive index. Specifically, we demonstrate that glide-symmetric structures with rectangular shapes can be employed to synthesize anisotropic refractive indexes with a large band of operation, which makes such metasurface structures applicable for the realization of ultrawideband planar lenses.

Abstract: We concentrate on machine learning techniques used for profiled sidechannel analysis in the presence of imbalanced data. Such scenarios are realistic and often occurring, for instance in the Hamming weight or Hamming distance leakage models. In order to deal with the imbalanced data, we use various balancing techniques and we show that most of them help in mounting successful attacks when the data is highly imbalanced. Especially, the results with the SMOTE technique are encouraging, since we observe some scenarios where it reduces the number of necessary measurements more than 8 times. Next, we provide extensive results on comparison of machine learning and side-channel metrics, where we show that machine learning metrics (and especially accuracy as the most often used one) can be extremely deceptive. Abstract: International audience; This Letter discusses nonresonant modes excited on holey metasurfaces and their influence on the properties of spoof plasmonic states supported by the metasurface when a second surface is placed in its proximity. We consider here a metallic surface with periodic holes drilled in it. The field excited on each hole is projected onto a set of nonresonant modes in order to discuss their relative relevance. While previous simpler models assumed only the presence of the fundamental mode, we show that the simultaneous presence of several modes occurs when the surface is placed next to a metallic plate. Therefore, higher-order modes are responsible for the peculiar physical properties of wave propagation of spoof plasmons between two surfaces, which can lead to new gradient-index flat lenses for transceivers for space communications.

Abstract: The field of side-channel analysis has made significant progress over time. Side-channel analysis is now used in practice in design companies as well as in test laboratories, and the security of products against side-channel attacks has significantly improved. However, there are still some remaining issues to be solved for side-channel analysis to become more effective. Side-channel analysis consists of two steps, commonly referred to as identification and exploitation. The identification consists of understanding the leakage and building suitable models. The exploitation consists of using the identified leakage models to extract the secret key. In scenarios where the model is poorly known, it can be approximated in a profiling phase. There, machine learning techniques are gaining value. In this paper, we conduct extensive analysis of several machine learning techniques, showing the importance of proper parameter tuning and training. In contrast to what is perceived as common knowledge in unrestricted scenarios, we show that some machine learning techniques can significantly outperform template attacks when properly used. We therefore stress that the traditional worst case security assessment of cryptographic implementations, that mainly includes template attacks, might not be accurate enough. Besides that, we present a new measure called the Data Confusion Factor that can be used to assess how well machine learning techniques will perform on a certain dataset.

Abstract: International audience; We present an evaluation and a comparison of different Visual Odometry algorithms, selected to be tested on a mobile device equipped with a RGB-D camera. The most promising algorithms from the literature are tested on different mobile devices, some equipped with the Structure Sensor. We evaluate the accuracy of each selected algorithm as well as the the memory and CPU consumption, and we show that even without specific optimization, some of them can provide a reliable measure of the device motion in real time.

In this contribution, we propose a theoretical analysis of different canonical sources placed on biological tissues. Abstract: International audience; In the recent years turning smartphones into 3D reconstruction devices has been greatly investigated. Different 3D reconstruction concepts have been proposed, and one of the most popular is based on IR projection of a pseu-dorandom dots (speckle) pattern. We demonstrate our idea how a pseudoran-dom dots pattern can be used and we also present an active approach applying a structured light (SL) scanning on the smartphone. SL has a number of advantages compared to other 3D reconstruction concepts and likewise our smartphone implementation inherits the same advantages compared to other smartphone based solutions. The shown qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the comparable outcome with the standard type SL scanner.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a discriminative patch-level spatial layout model suitable for training with weak supervision. We start from a block-sparse model of patch appearance based on the normalized Fisher vector representation. The appearance model is responsible for i) selecting a discriminative subset of visual words, and ii) identifying distinctive patches assigned to the selected subset. These patches are further filtered by a sparse spatial model operating on a novel representation of pairwise patch layout. We have evaluated the proposed pipeline in image classification and weakly supervised localization experiments on a public traffic sign dataset. The results show significant advantage of the proposed spatial model over state of the art appearance models.

Abstract: An accurate computer-aided-design tool has been developed for the synthesis of broadband layered circular-cylindrical dielectric lens antennas. It is based on the combination of a fast method of analysis formulated in the spectral domain with a global optimization algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization technique. Using this tool, the influence of the number of layers is studied for lenses of moderate size. We show that single-layer lenses with an optimum permittivity value have nearly the same radiation characteristics as optimized multi-layer configurations. Finally we introduce a new height reduction technique that allows reducing the lens size by almost a factor of two while retaining the fan-beam pattern capabilities of cylindrical lenses in the elevation plane as well as their axial-symmetry needed for beam scanning in the horizontal plane. Numerical results have been compared successfully with experimental ones from 26 to 40 GHz, to validate the analysis.

Abstract: International audience; The phenomenon of social networking has entered the lives of millions of people via the ubiquitous Web-based platforms such as Facebook and Google+ which are centralized platforms completely controlled by single entities. However, a complete parallel message-passing infrastructure already exists and has the benefit of 30 years experience and investments: the SMTP e-mail network, which together with the latest technologies can be utilized to provide a completely decentralized, convenient, private and even fault-tolerant social networking platform. This work in progress aims to design and implement a proof of concept of such idea.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present CatViz--Temporally-Sliced Correspondence Analysis Visualization. This novel method visualizes relationships through time and is suitable for large-scale temporal multivariate data. We couple CatViz with clustering methods, whereupon we introduce the concept of final centroid transfer, which enables the correspondence of clusters in time. Although CatViz can be used on any type of temporal data, we show how it can be applied to the task of exploratory visual analysis of text collections. We present a successful concept of employing feature-type filtering to present different aspects of textual data. We performed case studies on large collections of French and English news articles. In addition, we conducted a user study that confirms the usefulness of our method. We present typical tasks of exploratory text analysis and discuss application procedures that an analyst might perform. We believe that CatViz is general and highly applicable to large data sets because of its intuitiveness, effectiveness, and robustness. We expect that it will enable a better understanding of texts in huge historical archives.

In this paper, we argue for efficient presence management by means of a holistic view of both physical context and virtual presence in online communication channels. We sketch the components for enabling presence as a service integrating both online information as well as physical sensors, discussing benefits, possible applications on top, and challenges of establishing such a service.

Abstract: International audience; Explorative data analysis in text mining essentially relies on effective visualization techniques which can expose hidden relationships among documents and reveal correspondence between documents and their features. In text mining, the documents are most often represented by feature vectors of very high dimensions, requiring dimensionality reduction to obtain visual projections in two- or three-dimensional space. Correspondence analysis is an unsupervised approach that allows for construction of low-dimensional projection space with simultaneous placement of both documents and features, making it ideal for explorative analysis in text mining. Its present use, however, has been limited to word-based features. In this paper, we investigate how this particular document representation compares to the representation with letter n-grams and word n-grams, and find that these alternative representations yield better results in separating documents of different class. We perform our experimental analysis on a bilingual Croatian-English parallel corpus, allowing us to additionally explore the impact of features in different languages on the quality of visualizations.

Abstract: International audience; This project proposes to develop a driver simulator, which takes into account information about the user state of mind (level of attention, fatigue state, stress state). The user'sstate of mind analysis is based on video data and physiological signals. Facial movements such as eyes blinking, yawning, head rotations... are detected on video data: they are used in order to evaluate the fatigue and attention level of the driver. The user'selectrocardiogram and galvanic skin response are recorded andanalyzed in order to evaluate the stress level of the driver. A driver simulator software is modified in order to be able to appropriately react to these critical situations of fatigue andstress: some visual messages are sent to the driver, wheelvibrations are generated and the driver is supposed to react to the alertness messages. A flexible and efficient multi threaded server architecture is proposed to support multi messages sent bydifferent modalities. Strategies for data fusion and fission are also provided. Some of these components are integrated within the first prototype of OpenInterface (the Multimodal Similar platform).

Even without refinement, sometimes not necessary, reconstruction results using our initial sets are better than using commonly obtained initial values. Besides, the entire calibration procedure is shortened since the usual two calibration phases become one.

Different systems involve different camera calibration methods/tools. Characteristical for many systems is to calibrate the cameras using a single wand of known length. As integral part of the calibration procedure, initial camera parameters are commonly computed by putting and imaging two or three orthogonal wands inside the working volume. This is usually followed by the following second step: sweeping the working volume with a single wand of known length. This paper presents two alternative ways of initializing camera parameters using essentially the same calibration tools (orthogonal wands) however by sweeping the volume with an orthogonal pair or triad of wands instead of a single one. The proposed methods exploit the orthogonality of the used wands and familiar linear constraints to calculate the image of the so-called absolute conic (IAC). Extracted internal parameters values from IAC are closer to the refined ones, assuring faster and safer convergence. Even without refinement, sometimes not necessary, reconstruction results using our initial sets are better than using commonly obtained initial values. Besides, the entire calibration procedure is shortened since the usual two calibration steps become one.

Abstract: International audience; 3D scene information can be extracted from images acquired by cameras. Before doing the actual reconstruction, camera calibration has to be done. Reconstruction accuracy is highly dictated by the calibration. Two typical demands, which are not easily simultaneously satisfied, are: calibration has to be done in a fast and convenient manner and yet assure a high degree of reconstruction accuracy. The computational part of calibration usually includes the initialization of camera parameters and refinement based on an initial set of values. The goodness of the initial set greatly affects the refinement procedure in terms of convergence speed and ultimately reconstruction accuracy. This work proposes a new calibration method for 3D kinematic systems. It shortens the commonly used calibration procedure, gives better initial parameter values for the refinement procedure which in turn is supposed to assure faster and safer convergence of the iterative minimization algorithm. Additionally, it is shown that even without parameter refinement the proposed method gives more accurate 3D reconstruction output.

Abstract: The European School of Antennas (ESoA) is a new model of geographically-distributed school that has the objective to reinforce the European training and research in antennas and relevant applications. This paper presents the objective and perspectives of ESoA and the results obtained in 2006 and the first part of 2007 in terms of flow of students and teachers.

Abstract: International audience; Models for field-to-line coupling are interesting be- cause they help to predict the immunity of PCBs and explain the relation between routing and immunity. In this article a meandered PCB trace illuminated by EM field in a TEM cell is analysed. The near-end and far-end coupling is predicted using two models: a detailed and an approximative one. The detailed model is a circuit of coupled multi-conductor transmission lines evaluated with a circuit simulator. The approximative model consists of a single Taylor cell with an analytical modification evaluated using a numerical computing tool. Both predictions are compared with measurements and turn out to be equally precise. The advantage of the coupled lines model is its flexibility, the advantage of the modified Taylor model is its ease of use.
