This article describes the organization, operation, and contents of the Virtual Historical Archive of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The organization of this archive started in 2008, as part of the activities planned by the Chair II of History of Psychology, and gained the support of the Faculty of Psychology. From its beginnings to the present, several documentary sources and materials related to the history of psychology in Argentina have been incorporated. It currently contains six thematic sections and three special collections, and it is expected that in the future it will be extended to other thematic areas. Main directions of scientific and scientific-practical activity of the professor Mikhail Ivanovich Avdeev are described in the article. These include: a set of scientific tasks to justify the staff and organizational structure, organization and justification of the expert work content in the specialized military forensic service, including the training programs development for specialization and thematic improvement of forensic experts; determining the limits of competence for forensic experts in determining the violent death type; systematization of causes and death conditions; establishing structure of sudden death causes in young persons; assessment of the pathogenetic role of trauma and pathology in the development of basal subarachnoid hemorrhages; formulation of the conceptual base content for forensic medicine; justification of a scientifically based sequence of forensic medicine reproduction; creation of a scientific school of military forensic experts; preparation and publication of about 50 textbooks, manuals and, monographs on forensic medicine, including the fundamental work «Forensic Medicine Course», «Forensic Examination of Living People», «Forensic Corpse Examination».

To finish this special issue, some friends, colleagues and students of Prof. Chow (Emeritus Professor, the Research School of Biology, the Australian National University) have written small tributes to acknowledge not only his eminent career but to describe his wonderful personality., (© 2021. Geoffrey Burnstock, one of the most talented and brilliant scientists of his generation, was born on the 10th of May 1929 in London and died on the 2ndof June 2020, aged 91, in Melbourne (Australia). Geoffrey Burnstock started his research studies with an interest in the nerves controlling the guts of guinea pigs, and discovered a completely unexpected and ubiquitous signalling system mediated via extracellular nucleotides (the "purinergic theory"), which revolutionized our understanding of how cells communicate between each other. He made the highly controversial discovery that ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule well known to biochemists for its role as a source of energy inside cells, could also transmit signals between them. Initially, his somewhat heretical theory, that did not fit conventional views, found considerable resistance in the scientific community. However, he continued to accumulate evidence in favor of his hypothesis, extending it to a variety of organs and systems and demonstrating a role for purinergic signaling in the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems, and in the pathophysiology of pain, blood clotting, cell proliferation and differentiation, and immunity. For his entire life, he struggled to attract scientists to this new field and, finally, in the early 1990s, did evidence emerge that convinced the doubters, due to new molecular biology techniques making it possible to isolate and identify the cell surface receptors for ATP and its breakdown product, adenosine. His death clearly impacted a huge number of scientists who have lost their pioneering leader. In this Review, I will not talk of the many discoveries made by Professor Burnstock, nor of his enormous scientific contributions to the field and of the incredible number of prizes and public recognitions that he has received after his theory was accepted worldwide. Instead, I will share some personal memories on him as a teacher and scientist, and, most of all, as a loyal and reliable friend. Geoff was an extraordinary human being, always eager to collaborate and share data, never jealous of his findings and capable of learning even from young people. He was known for his enthusiasm, empathy and ability to motivate young scientists. I was lucky to meet him when I was still very young, and the collaboration and friendship that we established and maintained across the years has profoundly conditioned my professional and personal life. For me, Geoff was what in Italy we call a "Maestro", one of those leading figures who are fundamental not only for mentoring an individual's career but also their growth as a scientist and as a human being., (Copyright © 2020. Xenophon J Contiades was born in Marseille in 1903. After a brilliant career as a surgeon and Chef de Clinique in Paris receiving numerous awards and publishing more than 100 manuscripts, Contiades returned to Greece to become Professor of Surgery at the University of Athens being appointed as Director of the Surgery Clinic at the "Hippokration" General Hospital of Athens. At the beginning of the Second World War, Professor Contiades exhorted his students to defend their country. He concluded his final lecture by saying: "Gentlemen, you know what happened to our homeland. I believe that each one of us will do his duty. I wish you good luck. The lesson is over!" As Director of the Surgery Clinic of the Ioannina Military Hospital at the war front, he organized the clinic for the treatment of frostbitten and seriously injured warriors. He died as a hero during a German Nazi air strike on the Hospital building bearing the Red Cross sign on 20 April 1941 (Easter day) while operating on a patient who survived. We should not forget a man who lead a meaningful and glorious but short life dedicated to the service of his country and mankind in very difficult times.

This paper describes the scientific career and accomplishments of Professor Wladek Minor, who holds an endowed chair at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA. Prof. Minor is a coauthor of data processing software used by macromolecular crystallographers world-wide, as well as of structural biology servers and of a repository for raw diffraction data. He made major contributions to the validation of biostructural data, with special focus on drug design targets and reproducibility in biomedical research. He is among the most highly cited molecular biologists ever.

U.S. Army doctor Daniel Smith Lamb was a significant figure in the history of American pathology during its formative years. For 55 years (1865-1920), Lamb performed hundreds of autopsies in and around Washington, D.C. and personally collected over 1,500 gross pathology specimens for the Army Medical Museum. His work began at the close of the Civil War and continued on through World War I, contributing substantially to gross pathological and histological studies that documented wartime pathology, thus further contributing to the training of Army doctors. Specimens he collected also include material from autopsies he conducted on President James Garfield, his assassin Charles Guiteau, and other historical figures. Under the auspices of the Army Medical Museum, he conducted autopsies across the city of Washington for the museum's collection, many of which survive to this day at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. He served under 12 U.S. Army Surgeons General and 11 Museum Curators and was noted to be a steadying influence during a time of constant leadership changes at that institution. Lamb was known throughout Washington, D.C. as an advocate of medical education for African-Americans and women. While working at the Museum, he simultaneously served for 46 years as professor of anatomy at Howard University (1877-1923). When teenaged Henry Jacob Bigelow was an undergraduate at Harvard College in 1833-1837, he prepared nitrous oxide gas for demonstrations to other students. Bigelow's son, William Sturgis Bigelow, related the claim, and there is an eyewitness account from Augustus Goddard Peabody, a fellow Harvard undergraduate with Bigelow. Peabody wrote to Henry David Thoreau about a nitrous frolic. College chemistry primed Bigelow to support the concept of inhaled surgical anesthesia when the idea came to Boston in 1845-1846. Bigelow's chemistry professor was John White Webster. According to Harvard alumnus Edward Everett Hale, in addition to demonstrating effects of nitrous oxide, Webster presciently treated two cases of carbon monoxide poisoning with copious volumes of synthetic oxygen gas. The career of Webster was inhibited by financial difficulties that were suspected to be contributory when he was convicted of the 1849 murder of physician George Parkman at the Harvard Medical School, then adjacent to Massachusetts General Hospital and its Ether Dome. Modern research in Polish physiology began on a larger scale in the second half of the nineteenth century. The academic city of Cracow and the professors of physiology employed at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University played a pivotal role. Among the most eminent were Gustaw Piotrowski (1833 - 1884) and his outstanding successor in the Chair of Physiology - Napoleon Cybulski (1854 - 1919) who was a world-class researcher and a pioneer in the field of electroencephalography and endocrinology. In the following years the Chair was headed by Ernest Maydell (1878 - 1930) and Jerzy Kaulbersz (1891 - 1986). Kaulbersz's achievements were particularly important. A large part of his work concerned physiology of digestion and research into changes in the human body in alpine conditions. Kaulbersz remained in the Chair of Physiology of the Jagiellonian University after World War II.

Anatomy and Lyon have a very long history together since the first hospital in France was set up on the banks of the Saône River in the fourteenth century. The Lyon school of Anatomy was originally in the Hôtel-Dieu, which later housed the "secondary" (1821) then "preparatory" (1841) schools. Only in 1877 was the Medicine and Pharmacy Faculty set up. The development of anatomy teaching followed the rise of printing in the fifteenth century. The rise of surgery was founded on knowledge of anatomy and the ability to teach it. Before the days of anesthesia, surgery required perfect anatomical skills, to keep operative time to a minimum. Correlation with anatomy accompanied the introduction of radiology and later of medical imaging in general; the science of Anatomy is nowadays enriched by robotics and information technology.

Presents an obituary for Fred Edward Fiedler, who died June 8, 2017. Fiedler made four truly significant contributions to the field of psychology. First, he changed the way psychologists think about successful leadership. His book A Theory of Leadership Effectiveness (1967) provided the foundation for much of his later work. Second, at both the University of Illinois and the University of Washington, Fiedler had his own research building and facility. Third, he had an outstanding reputation. He was known around the world for his writing, lectures, and consulting work. He published over 100 journal articles and had numerous books and chapters in edited volumes. Finally, Fiedler left a huge personal legacy. He was always there to support his students. He provided financial support, advice, and technical assistance. Presents an obituary for Morton Deutsch, who died March 13, 2017, at 97 years old. Deutsch believed in the power of ideas to rectify serious social problems, and in the role of science to refine our understanding of those ideas. Ranked among the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century, he was a distinguished theorist and pioneer in the study of cooperation, conflict resolution and social justice, as well as a remarkably warm, wise and respectful mentor. Deutsch held numerous leadership positions, including faculty positions at Teachers College, Columbia University and New York University and various presidencies, and accumulated dozens of awards, including eight lifetime achievement awards and the creation of four awards in his name. He also trained as a psychoanalyst and had a private practice for many years. In 1986, he founded the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at Columbia, where he continued to work and welcome students well into his 90s. Presents an obituary for Barbara Henker, who died January 24, 2017, at the age of 81. Henker was professor emerita and a pioneering female faculty member in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Arriving in 1965, she served on the faculty in the clinical and developmental psychology areas at UCLA as the first woman faculty member hired by the department. Henker also worked in the areas of health-related behaviors, attributional styles, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and early use of electronic diaries to monitor the behavior and emotions of youth and parents. A beloved teacher and mentor, she developed the psychological assessment practicum for graduate students at UCLA and taught the course for many years. Its blend of theory, critical analysis, and practical application was lauded by students, many of whom said it was the best course they had ever taken. Presents an obituary for Jaak Panksepp, who died April 18, 2017. Panksepp reshaped the landscape of psychology by highlighting emotions and coincident feelings in basic and clinical research. Most of his career was spent convincing others that the key to understanding human mental illness was the understanding of primal emotional operating systems in conserved neural circuitry. His framework was carefully laid out in his book Affective Neuroscience: The Foundation of Human and Animal Emotions (1998). His controversial writings vigorously pushed for the acceptance of nonhuman animal feelings as primary states that link to motivated action and emotional expression. His agenda included developing animal models of mental illness with objective measures of emotion and removing the focus on higher level cognition. Panksepp completed the brunt of his research on the emotional operating systems while a professor at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) from 1972 to 1998. After retiring emeritus from Bowling Green, he was the Bailey Endowed Chair of Animal Well-Being Science at Washington State University until his passing. Trained in the ULB, pupil of Albert Brachet, Ernest Van Campenhout frequented successively the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Yale University and the Montreal University, to settle definitively in the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), where he becomes professor of anatomy, histology and embryology. Despite the fact that his most interest was the autonomic innervation of the digestive tract, he examined a lot of problems, and his severe and rigorous teaching impressed a number of student's generations.

The present chapter deals with the contribution of Professor Paul A. Bastenie, as Chief of the Department of Medicine of the Saint-Pierre Hospital and Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Medicine at Brussels Free University, in the field of diabetes with emphasis on the role of insulin in glucose homeostasis. The knowledge and experimental work under consideration is covering the period from 1955 to 1974. They entail not only three treatises contributed by Bastenie but also fundamental and clinical investigations, such as those presented in eight doctoral dissertations submitted for aggregation examination at Brussels Free University. These theses are dealing with the measurement of glucose assimilation (V. Conard), the measurement of insulin activity in men (J.R.M. Franckson), the mechanisms of action of hypoglycemic drugs (R. Bellens), the study of energy metabolism in children (H. Loeb), the study of insulin secretion in vitro (W. Malaisse), the distribution of insulin in body fluids as influenced by the permeability and structure of blood capillaries (E. Rasio), the regulation of the extra-hepatic metabolism of ketone bodies in anesthetized dogs (E.O. Balasse) and the use of radioiodinated insulin as tracers in biology (H.A. Ooms).

The 21st century is nearly two decades old, and the faculty ranks at our educational institutions remain sparsely diverse. While educational institutions are continually being challenged to increase the diversity of their faculty, progress is slow. This essay offers a perspective on the importance of diversity in our educational institutions as well as on the traditional metrics that our institutions use to evaluate faculty in hiring, promotion, and tenure. I also reflect on how my life experiences as a person of color provided me with the skills needed to succeed as an academic in science and inspired me to dedicate myself to work to increase the representation of women and people of color in science and in our educational institutions to create an inclusive environment for all members of the scientific community., (© 2017 Trejo.
