We investigate the mass content of galaxies in the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 611. We perform a strong lensing analysis of the cluster core and use velocity dispersion measurements for individual cluster members as additional constraints. Despite the small number of multiply-imaged systems and cluster members with central velocity dispersions available in the core of A611, the addition of velocity dispersion measurements leads to tighter constraints on the mass associated with the galaxy component, and as a result, on the mass associated with the dark matter halo. Without the spectroscopic velocity dispersions, we would overestimate the mass of the galaxy component by a factor of $\sim1.5$, or, equivalently, we would underestimate the mass of the cluster dark halo by $\sim5\%$. We perform an additional lensing analysis using surface brightness (SB) reconstruction of the tangential giant arc. This approach improves the constraints on the mass parameters of the 5 galaxies close to the arc by up to a factor $\sim10$. The galaxy velocity dispersions resulting from the SB analysis are consistent at the 1$\sigma$ confidence level with the spectroscopic measurements and with the prediction from the simple pointlike analysis. In contrast the truncation radii for 2-3 galaxies depart significantly from the galaxy scaling relation and suggest differences in the stripping history from galaxy to galaxy., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

We use velocity dispersion measurements of 21 individual cluster members in the core of Abell 383, obtained with MMT Hectospec, to separate the galaxy and the smooth dark halo (DH) lensing contributions. While lensing usually constrains the overall, projected mass density, the innovative use of velocity dispersion measurements as a proxy for masses of individual cluster members breaks inherent degeneracies and allows us to (a) refine the constraints on single galaxy masses and on the galaxy mass-to-light scaling relation and, as a result, (b) refine the constraints on the DM-only map, a high-end goal of lens modelling. The knowledge of cluster member velocity dispersions improves the fit by 17% in terms of the image reproduction $\chi^2$, or 20% in terms of the rms. The constraints on the mass parameters improve by ~10% for the DH, while for the galaxy component, they are refined correspondingly by ~50%, including the galaxy halo truncation radius. For an L$^*$ galaxy with M$^*_B$=-20.96, for example, we obtain best fitting truncation radius r$^*_{tr}=20.5^{+9.6}_{-6.7}$ kpc and velocity dispersion $\sigma^*=324\pm17 km/s$. Moreover, by performing the surface brightness reconstruction of the southern giant arc, we improve the constraints on r$_{tr}$ of two nearby cluster members, which have measured velocity dispersions, by more than ~30%. We estimate the stripped mass for these two galaxies, getting results that are consistent with numerical simulations. We have previously demonstrated that Tully-Fisher residuals correlate with tracers of star formation history (color and emission line equivalent width) for a broad sample of Sa--Sd spiral galaxies (Kannappan, Fabricant, & Franx 2002). The `Century Survey' strip covers 102 square degrees within the limits 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 16.5h, 29.0 degrees \leq \delta_{1950} \leq 30.0 degrees. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster and the outer region of the Coma cluster. Within the Century Survey region, we have measured 2410 redshifts which constitute four overlapping complete redshift surveys: (1) 1728 galaxies with Kron-Cousins R_{phot} \leq 16.13 covering the entire strip, (2) 507 galaxies with R_{phot} \leq 16.4 in the right ascension range 8h 32m \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 10h 45m, (3) 1251 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected R_{CCD, corr} \leq 16.2 covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h and (4) 1255 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected V_{CCD, corr} \leq 16.7 also covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h. The 15R-North galaxy redshift survey is a uniform spectroscopic survey (S/N $\sim $10) covering the range 3650---7400\AA for 3149 galaxies with median redshift 0.05. The sample is 90% complete to $R=15.4$. The median slit covering fraction is 24% of the galaxy, apparently sufficient to minimize the effects of aperture bias on the EW(H$\alpha$). Forty-nine percent of the galaxes in the survey have one or more emission lines detected at $\geq 2 \sigma$. In agreement with previous surveys, the fraction of absorption-line galaxies increases steeply with galaxy luminosity. We use H$\beta$, O[III], H$\alpha$, and [N\II] to discriminate between star-forming galaxies and AGNs. We use the EW(H$\alpha$ + [N\II]) to estimate the Scalo birthrate parameter, $b$, the ratio of the current star formation rate to the time averaged star formation rate. The slow evolution of the M/L ratios, colors, and line strengths of cluster early-type galaxies to z=1 suggests that their stars were formed at very high redshift. At the same time, morphological studies of distant clusters indicate significant evolution in the early-type galaxy population. Striking evidence for strong morphological evolution in clusters is the discovery of a large number of red merger systems in the cluster MS 1054-03 at z=0.83. The presence of these mergers is qualitatively consistent with predictions from hierarchical galaxy formation models, and is direct evidence against an early collapse for all early-type galaxies. In most of the mergers there is no evidence for strong star formation. Therefore the mean stellar ages of the merger products will be much older than the ``assembly age'', and do not violate the constraints on the star formation epoch of early-type galaxies imposed by the color-magnitude relation and the Fundamental Plane., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We measure the frequency of bulk gas-stellar counterrotation in a sample of 67 galaxies drawn from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative survey of the local galaxy population down to M_B-15. We detect 4 counterrotators among 17 E/S0's with extended gas emission (24% +8 -6). In contrast, we find no clear examples of bulk counterrotation among 38 Sa-Sbc spirals, although one Sa does show peculiar gas kinematics. This result implies that, at 95% confidence, no more than 8% of Sa-Sbc spirals are bulk counterrotators. Among types Sc and later, we identify only one possible counterrotator, a Magellanic irregular. We analyze asymmetries in the gas rotation curves of 113 galaxies drawn from the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, spanning a broad range of luminosities and morphologies. If the origin of the rotation curve is chosen to minimize the asymmetry, then ~23% of sample galaxies show asymmetry >5% within 1.3r_e. We search for bulk counterrotation of the gas and stars in 67 galaxies of all types and a wide range of luminosities. Bulk counterrotation characterizes \~25-30% of E/S0's with extended gas, but at most a few percent of Sa-Sbc spirals. For S0's, the frequency of counterrotation we derive agrees with previous work, but we sample significantly fainter luminosities. We describe the morphological composition of a sample of 518 galaxies in the field of CL1358+62 at z=0.33, drawn from a large HST mosaic covering 53 sq. arcmin. The sample is complete to I=22, corresponding to M_V=-18.5 in the rest frame. The galaxies have been independently classified by the authors of this paper and by Alan Dressler. For galaxies with I<21, the two sets of classifiers agree on the total early-type population, but disagree on the S0/E ratio. We discuss the constraints on morphological evolution and the implication of the differing S0/E ratios. We used the Hubble Space Telescope to take a wide field, multicolor image of the high redshift cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. The Keck telescope was used to take 200 redshifts in the field. We have a total of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members with deep WFPC2 imaging. A surprisingly large number of these cluster members are mergers: 13 out of 77 galaxies are classified as merger remnants, or mergers in progress. Most of these are red, and massive. Their restframe B luminosities are amongst the brightest in the cluster: we find that 5 out of the brightest 16 are mergers. No such bright mergers were found in a lower redshift cluster with similar wide field coverage. The mergers in MS1054-03 are preferentially found in the outskirts of the cluster. The distribution of pairs in the outskirts of the cluster shows an excess of galaxies with separation < 10 h^-1 kpc, which is independent confirmation of the enhanced interaction rate. The fraction of mergers (17 %) is comparable to the fraction of ellipticals (22 %). Hence up to 50 % of low redshift ellipticals may have formed through mergers since z=1. There is no evidence for strong star formation in most of the mergers. The mean stellar ages of the mergers may therefore be much older than the ``assembly age'', i.e., the age since the time the system was put together. We present results from a morphological study of the distant X-ray cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. We have obtained a large, two color HST WFPC2 mosaic of this cluster, and measured redshifts of 186 galaxies in the MS1054-03 field with the 10m Keck telescope. Of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies observerd with HST, 13 are merger systems. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into luminous elliptical galaxies, and some may evolve into S0 galaxies. If the galaxy population in MS1054-03 is typical for its redshift up to 50% of ellipticals may have formed in mergers at z<1. The mergers are generally red and have no detected OII 3727 emission. This result is consistent with the old stellar ages of ellipticals inferred from other studies. The mergers are preferentially found towards the outskirts of the cluster, indicating they probably occur in infalling clumps. A significant overabundance of close pairs of red galaxies detected in the outskirts of MS1054-03 confirms the large number of interacting galaxies in this cluster., Comment: 4 pages, including figures. We have obtained integrated and nuclear spectra, as well as U, B, R surface photometry, for a representative sample of 196 nearby galaxies. These galaxies span the entire Hubble sequence in morphological type, as well as a wide range of luminosities (M_B=-14 to -22). Here we present the spectrophotometry for these galaxies. The selection of the sample and the U, B, R surface photometry is described in a companion paper (Paper I). Our goals for the project include measuring the current star formation rates and metallicities of these galaxies, and elucidating their star formation histories, as a function of luminosity and morphology. We thereby extend the work of Kennicutt (1992a) to lower luminosity systems. We anticipate that our study will be useful as a benchmark for studies of galaxies at high redshift. We describe the observing, data reduction and calibration techniques, and demonstrate that our spectrophotometry agrees well with that of Kennicutt. The spectra span the range 3550--7250 A at a resolution (FWHM) of ~6 A, and have an overall relative spectrophotometric accuracy of +/- 6 per cent. We present a spectrophotometric atlas of integrated and nuclear rest-frame spectra, as well as tables of equivalent widths and synthetic colors. We study the correlations of galaxy properties determined from the spectra and images. These galaxies span the entire Hubble sequence in morphological type, as well as a wide range of luminosities (M_B = -14 to -22) and colors (B-R=0.4 to 1.8). Here we describe the sample selection criteria and the U, B, R surface photometry for these galaxies. The spectro- photometric results will be presented in a companion paper. We present a spectroscopic survey of the rich, X-ray selected, galaxy cluster CL 1358+6245 at z=0.328. When our 173 new multi-slit spectra of cluster galaxies are combined with data from the literature, we produce a catalog of 232 cluster members in a region 10'x11' (3.5 Mpc x 3.8 Mpc) surrounding the brightest cluster galaxy. These data are used to study the structure and dynamics of the cluster and to examine the radial and velocity distributions as a function of spectral type. We classify the spectral types of the cluster members according to the strengths of the Balmer absorption lines (Hdelta, Hgamma, and Hbeta) and the [OII] 3727 Ang emission line., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, uses aas2pp4, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We identify the extended Einstein IPC X-ray source, 1E0657-56, with a previously unknown cluster of galaxies at a redshift of $z=0.296$. Optical CCD images show the presence of a gravitational arc in this cluster and galaxy spectra yield a cluster velocity dispersion of $1213^{+352}_{-191}$ km s$^{-1}$. X-ray data obtained with the ROSAT HRI and ASCA indicate that 1E0657-56 is a highly luminous cluster in which a merger of subclusters may be occurring. The temperature of the hot gas in 1E0657-56 is $\rm{kT}=17.4 \pm 2.5 keV$, which makes it an unusually hot cluster, with important cosmological implications., Comment: 4 figures

We analyze the galaxy population and dynamics of the galaxy cluster Abell 576 using 281 redshifts (230 new), R band CCD galaxy photometry over a 2h^{-1} Mpc by 2h^{-1} Mpc region centered on the cluster, an Einstein IPC image, and an Einstein MPC spectrum. The cluster galaxies with emission lines in their spectra have a larger velocity dispersion and are significantly less clustered on this 2h^{-1} Mpc scale than galaxies without emission lines. We show that excluding the emission line galaxies decreases the velocity dispersion by 18% and the virial mass estimate by a factor of two. The central cluster region contains a non--emission galaxy population and an intracluster medium which are significantly cooler (sigma_{core}=387^{+250}_{-105}~km/s and T_X=1.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}~keV at 90\% confidence) than the global populations (sigma=977^{+124}_{-96}~km/s for the non--emission population and T_X>4~keV at 90% confidence). Because (1) the low dispersion population is no more luminous than the global population and (2) the evidence for a cooling flow is weak, we suggest that the cluster core may contain the remnants of a lower mass subcluster. We examine the cluster mass, baryon fraction and luminosity function. The cluster virial mass varies significantly depending on the galaxy sample used. Consistency between the hydrostatic and virial estimators can be achieved if (1) the gas temperature at r\sim1h^{-1}~Mpc is T_X\sim8keV (the best fit value) and (2) several velocity outliers are excluded from the virial calculation. Although the best fit Schechter function parameters and the ratio of galaxy to gas mass are typical of other clusters, the baryon fraction is relatively low. Using a lower limit to the binding mass, we show that the gas mass fraction is \le3h^{-3/2}% and the baryon fraction is \le6%., Comment: 34 pages postscript, accepted for publication in ApJ

We use a representative sample of 65 galaxy clusters observed with the Einstein IPC to constrain the range of cluster X-ray morphologies. We develop and apply quantitative and reproducible measures to constrain the intrinsic distributions of emission weighted centroid variation, axial ratio, orientation, and the radial fall--off. We then use the range of cluster X--ray morphologies to constrain three generic cosmological models (Omega=1, Omega_0=0.2, and Omega_0=0.2 & lambda_0=0.8). For each of these models, we evolve eight sets of Gaussian random initial conditions consistent with an effective power spectrum $P(k)\propto k^{-1}$ on cluster scales. Using this sample of 24 numerical cluster simulations, we compare the X--ray morphologies of the observed and simulated clusters. The comparisons indicate that: (i) cluster centroid variations, axial ratios, and radial fall-offs are sensitive to the underlying cosmological model, and (ii) galaxy clusters with the observed range of X--ray morphologies are very unlikely in low Omega_0 cosmologies. The analysis favors the Omega=1 model, though some discrepancies remain. We examine the relationship between the group x-ray luminosity in the 0.3-3.5 keV band and the measured velocity dispersion, and galaxy surface number density. We find definite correlations. Richer groups follow the same relation as rich clusters (cf. Quintana & Melnick 1982) with $L_x \propto \sigma^{4.0\pm 0.6}$, but the relation flattens for lower luminosity systems which have velocity dispersions below 300 km/s). We suggest that the $L_x-\sigma$ relation arises from a combination of extended cluster emission and emission associated with individual galaxies. The x-ray emission for the richer groups is dominated by emission from the intra-group medium, as for the richer clusters; emission from the poorer clusters is dominated by less extended emission associated with the individual group galaxies. Using a method for constraining the dynamical state of a galaxy cluster by examining the moments of its x-ray surface brightness distribution, we determine the statistics of cluster substructure for a sample of 40 Abell clusters. Using x-ray observations from the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC), we measure the first moment M1(r), the ellipsoidal orientation angle theta2(r), and the axial ratio eta(r) at several different radii in the cluster. We determine the effects of systematics such as x-ray point source emission, telescope vignetting, Poisson noise, and characteristics of the IPC by measuring the same parameters on an ensemble of simulated cluster images. Due to the small band-pass of the IPC, the ICM emissivity is nearly independent of temperature so the intensity at each point in the IPC images is simply proportional to the emission measure calculated along the line of sight through the cluster (e.g. Fabricant et al. 1980). Therefore, barring a change superposition of two x-ray emitting clusters, a significant variation in the image centroid M1(r) as a function of radius indicates that the center of mass of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) varies with radius. We argue that such a configuration (essentially an m = 1 component in the ICM density distribution) is a non-equilibrium component; it results from an off-center subclump or a recent merger in the ICM.

HB9 is a 2-deg-diameter radio shell with X-ray emission from a broad diffuse band in the interior. Within this band, a weak unresolved X-ray source coincides with the radio source 4C 46.09. To identify this source CCD I and V band pictures and a spectrum were obtained. The source is a galaxy at redshift 0.195, and is therefore only accidentally aligned with HB9. The galaxy is large and bright and has the characteristics of a cD galaxy, often found at the center of clusters. If the galaxy is centered in a cluster, some of the surrounding diffuse X-rays may also be extragalactic.

The medium energy X-ray detectors onboard the EXOSAT Observatory have been used to determine the gas temperature at several positions in the Coma Cluster of galaxies. Evidence is found at greater than 95 percent confidence for a higher temperature in the center of the cluster than in a position approximately 45 arcmin off-center. No difference in iron abundance is observed between the center and off-center regions and the equilibrium model for the distribution of elements in the Coma Cluster of Abramopoulos, Chanan, and Ku can be rejected with greater than 99.5 percent confidence, in favor of a model with more uniform composition. A phenomenological model is presented of the Coma Cluster, which is consistent with the data presented here, as well as the imaging data from the Einstein Observatory and the Tenma X-ray spectrum. The model has a central isothermal region of temperature about 9 keV extending to about 25 arcmin (about 1 Mpc). Beyond this radius the temperature falls as a polytrope with index about 1.6.

X-ray and optical data for A754 are used to study the relative distribution of the luminous and dark matter in this dense, rich cluster of galaxies with X-ray luminosity comparable to that of the Coma Cluster. A quantitative statistical comparison is made of the galaxy positions with the total mass responsible for maintaining the X-ray emitting gas in hydrostatic equilibrium. A simple bimodal model which fits both the X-ray and optical data suggests that the galaxies are distributed consistently with the projected matter distribution within the region covered by the X-ray map (0.5-1 Mpc). The X-ray and optical estimates of the mass in the central region of the cluster are 2.9 x 10 to the 14th and 3.6 + or - 0.5 x 10 to the 14th solar masses, respectively.

A xenon multiwire position-sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) with a high degree of long-term stability has been constructed and tested in detail. It is suitable for a 0.1 to 10 keV X-ray telescope such as AXAF, which it would share with detectors having better spatial and spectral resolution. Compared to other detectors, the larger format, higher quantum efficiency, and lower background of the PSPC makes it generally the most useful instrument for observations of diffuse cosmic X-ray sources and associations of sources more extended than a few tenths of a degree in diameter. Given the good spatial linearity, the systematic uncertainty for source locations is finer than an arcsecond. The spatial resolution varies as 0.3 mm/exp 0.5 (keV) over the range 0.2-4 keV, in accordance with theoretical limits determined by the size and the number of electrons in the primary charge cloud.

The first of eight X-ray telescopes is under construction for the LAMAR experiment. Each consists of two orthogonal sets of nested confocal one-dimensional parabolic plates of gold-coated float glass, selected for flatness from commercial stock. Each is initially bent to a cylinder by bonding a thin, highly curved titanium sheet to its inactive surface. The final parabolic figure is produced by an automated system which includes seven diode arrays that detect a visible-light line image. Eight precise motorized linear translators operating under the control of a computer, tune the plate to the optimum figure. The plate is then fixed in position by epoxy bonds. The precision of the system is several arcsec, but the intrinsic flatness of the glass is expected to limit the half-power diameter (HPD) of the telescope to about 25 arcsec.

Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror assemblies for the LAMAR experiment of the Space Shuttle are described. The aperture is 20 cm x 30 cm and the distance from the front of the mirror to the focal plane is 3.4 m. The reflectors are made from 1.8 mm gold coated float glass. A prototype brassboard mirror was constructed with only one-third of the plates. Its angular resolution is 35 arcsec (HPW) in visible light. X-ray tests over small areas indicate very little scattering. The fabrication technique is applicable to larger mirror systems such as those of XMM. The use of flatter material for the reflectors results in better angular resolution.

After two years of orbital operation, the IPC - a soft X-ray (0.2-4 keV) position sensitive proportional counter - continues to perform well after some initial gain changes, and is the most widely used focal plane instrument of the Einstein Observatory. X-ray images of several thousand cosmic X-ray sources have been obtained with a resolution of about 1.5 arcmin (FWHM) with a 1-deg field. Particle backgrounds are less than expected. The calibration of the instrument with respect to gain variations and spatial linearity is being refined by in-flight measurements.

The paper reports the first extensive detection of X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies at cosmological distances. The properties of these objects are similar to those observed in objects at low redshifts. The 0.5-4.5 keV luminosities are in the range of less than 1 x 10 to the 43rd to 2 x 10 to the 45th ergs/s; the core radii are on the order of 0.5 Mpc; and Bautz-Morgan type I clusters are more luminous than types II or III. The observations are consistent with models assuming an evolving cluster potential and moderately efficient galaxy formation, but do not require them when observational selection is considered. X-ray observations of the 3C 295 cluster indicate that there is sufficient intergalactic medium to cause stripping of the cluster spirals, but the colors of these galaxies imply that they have not been stripped. A possible explanation of this discrepancy is discussed.

The Einstein (HEAO 2) X-ray Observatory, launched in 1978, includes a fully imaging focusing X-ray telescope with an angular resolution of a few arc sec, a field of view of up to one deg, and a sensitivity several hundred times greater than previously available in any X-ray astronomy experiment. A high-resolution imager, an imaging proportional counter, a focal plane crystal spectrometer, and a monitor proportional counter are among the principal instruments on board the Einstein X-ray Observatory. About 20% of the total effective observing time in the first year of the X-ray astronomy experiment has been reserved for guest observers.
