During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 D0 events were selected by a pattern recognition program. They were confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. Fragmentation properties of deep-inelastic charm production were measured using these events. Distributions of the D0 momentum, Feynman x (xF), z and tan?out, the transverse angle out of the leptonic plane defined by the muon and the neutrino, are presented. The mean value of z was measured to be =0.63±0.03(stat)±0.01(syst). From fits to the z distribution, values for the Peterson parameter ?P=0.108±0.017(stat) ±0.013(syst) and the Collins-Spiller parameter ?CS=0.21-0.04+0. 05(stat)±0.04(syst) are found. For the average value of xF we find =0.38±0.04(stat)±0.03(syst) and for the forward-backward asymmetry A=0.79±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst). The distribution of tan?out was measured with an average value =0.030±0.002. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Particle Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A first analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. The search for $\nut$ charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the $\tauu$ lepton. No $\tauu$ candidate has been found. A $\numtonut$ mixing is excluded down to $\sin2t$ = $6.8 \times 10^{-4}$ for large $\dm2$ (90\%~C.L.).

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

CHORUS is an experiment searching for $\numtonut$ oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a {\sl hybrid} setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions where the $\tau$ lepton decays to $\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$. In a sample of 31,423 $\num$ charged current interactions, no $\nu_\tau$ candidates were found. For large $\dm2$ values, a limit on the mixing angle of $\sin2t < 3.5 \times 10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result.

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

- Abstract
Scintillating fibers are of growing interest in high energy physics for applications in calorimetry and in tracking detectors. At present plastic scintillating fibers are mainly used in these applications because of their high light yield and their fast decay rates; however, in thin fibers, required for high spatial resolution, these suffer from low attenuation lengths. Moreover, cross-talk is still a severe problem. As alternatives we will discuss the following two concepts: 1) using Ce- and Tb-doped multicomponent glasses as active core material of glass fibers and 2) using liquid scintillator filled glass capillary arrays. The optical properties of the rare earth doped glasses are described and the scintillation efficiency of the fibers and fiber bundles utilizing these glasses as core material are presented. Broader applications appear to be possible with liquid scintillator filled capillary arrays. Suitable liquid scintillators with high refractive index solvents and locally emitting solutes with high yields, short decay times and large Stokes-shifts are available. Arrays can be produced with and without extra mural absorber in various sizes and shapes. Theoretical estimates show that reflection losses at the liquid/glass interface do not effect the overall transmission up to length/diameter ratios of 105. In addition recent results have shown that the system resists radiation doses in the 100 kGy range. Further experimental results obtained at CERN with these arrays will be discussed., info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
• We looked retrospectively for all cases of toxic epidermal necrolysis that occurred in France over a 5-year period to appreciate the incidence of this disorder and its drug etiology. Of the 399 cases identified, we obtained detailed information on 344 cases and validated 253 cases. From response rates (66% to 98%), we estimated the actual total number of cases to be 333, and the incidence of toxic epidermal necrolysis in France to 1.2 cases per million per year. An independent estimation derived from death certificates gave a figure of 1.3 cases per million per year. When the number of cases with a given drug present were related to the defined daily doses of that drug sold over the 5-year period, the highest ratios were for sulfadiazin (230 · 10-8), isoxicam (41 · 10-8), oxyphenbutazone (18 · 10-8), phenytoin (14 · 10-8), fenbufen (13 · 10-8), and cotrimoxazole (12 · 10-8). This first nationwide study confirmed the rarity of toxic epidermal necrolysis. Within the two main classes of responsible drugs (antibacterial sulfonamides and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents) the risks linked to different drugs appeared quite different, even for closely chemically related products.(Arch Dermatol. 1990;126:37-42)
