Quantum light is described not only by a quantum state but also by the shape of the electromagnetic modes on which the state is defined. Optical precision measurements often estimate a ``mode parameter'' that determines properties such as frequency, temporal shape and the spatial distribution of the light field. By deriving quantum precision limits, we establish the fundamental bounds for mode parameter estimation. Our results reveal explicit mode-design recipes that enable the estimation of any mode parameter with quantum enhanced precision. Our approach provides practical methods for optimizing mode parameter estimation with relevant applications, including spatial and temporal positioning, spectroscopy, phase estimation, and superresolution imaging., Comment: 5 + 11 pages

Quantum key distribution with continuous variables already uses advantageous high-speed single-mode homodyne detection with low electronic noise at room temperature. Together with continuous-variable information encoding to nonclassical states, the distance for secure key transmission through lossy channels can approach 300 km in current optical fibers. Such protocols tolerate higher channel noise and also limited data processing efficiency compared to coherent-state protocols. The secret key rate can be further increased by increasing the system clock rates, and, further, by a suitable frequency-mode-multiplexing of optical transmission channels. However, the multiplexed modes couple together in the source or any other part of the protocol. Therefore, multiplexed communication will experience crosstalk and the gain can be minuscule. Advantageously, homodyne detectors allow solving this crosstalk problem by proper data processing. It is a potential advantage over protocols with single-photon detectors, which do not enable similar data processing techniques. We demonstrate the positive outcome of this methodology on the experimentally characterized frequency-multiplexed entangled source of femtosecond optical pulses with natural crosstalk between eight entangled pairs of modes. As the main result, we predict almost 15-fold higher secret key rate. We present the experimental implementation of simultaneous spatial multimode demultiplexing as a distance measurement tool. We first show a simple and intuitive derivation of the Fisher information in the presence of Poissonian noise. We then estimate the distance between two incoherent beams in both directions of the transverse plane, and find a perfect accordance with theoretical prediction, given a proper calibration of the demultiplexer. We find that, even though sensitivity is limited by the cross-talks between channels, we can perform measurements in 2 dimensions much beyond Rayleigh limit with a large dynamic.

Superresolution techniques based on intensity measurements after a spatial mode decomposition can overcome the precision of diffraction-limited direct imaging. However, realistic measurement devices always introduce finite crosstalk in any such mode decomposition. Here, we show that any nonzero crosstalk leads to a breakdown of superresolution when the number $N$ of detected photons is large. Combining statistical and analytical tools, we obtain the scaling of the precision limits for weak, generic crosstalk from a device-independent model as a function of the crosstalk probability and $N$. The scaling of the smallest distance that can be distinguished from noise changes from $N^{-1/2}$ for an ideal measurement to $N^{-1/4}$ in the presence of crosstalk., Comment: 5 + 6 pages, 5 + 3 figures

We present a single-pass source of broadband multimode squeezed light with potential application in quantum information and quantum metrology. The source is based on a type I parametric down-conversion (PDC) process inside a bulk nonlinear crystal in a non-collinear configuration. The generated squeezed light exhibits a spatiotemporal multimode behavior that is probed using a homodyne measurement with a local oscillator shaped both spatially and temporally. Finally we follow a covariance matrix based approach to reveal the distribution of the squeezing among several independent temporal and spatial modes. This unambiguously validates the multimode feature of our source.

A few decades ago, quantum optics stood out as a new domain of physics by exhibiting states of light with no classical equivalent. The first investigations concerned single photons, squeezed states, twin beams and EPR states, that involve only one or two modes of the electromagnetic field. The study of the properties of quantum light then evolved in the direction of more and more complex and rich situations, involving many modes, either spatial, temporal, frequency, or polarization modes. Actually, each mode of the electromagnetic field can be considered as an individual quantum degree of freedom. It is then possible, using the techniques of nonlinear optics, to couple different modes, and thus to build in a controlled way a quantum network in which the nodes are optical modes and that is endowed with a strong multipartite entanglement. In addition, such networks are easily reconfigurable and subject only to weak decoherence. They open indeed many promising perspectives for optical communications and computation. Because of the linearity of Maxwell equations a linear superposition of two modes is another mode. This means that a "modal superposition principle" exists hand in hand with the regular quantum state superposition principle. The purpose of the present review is to show the interest of considering these two aspects of multimode quantum light in a global way. Indeed using different sets of modes allows to consider the same quantum state under different perspectives: a given state can be entangled in one basis, factorized in another. We will show how to produce, characterize and tailor multimode quantum light. We study noise propagation dynamics in a femtosecond oscillator by injecting external noise on the pump intensity. We utilize a spectrally-resolved homodyne detection technique that enables simultaneous measurement of amplitude and phase quadrature noises of different spectral bands of the oscillator. To reveal the impact of added pump noise on the oscillator noise, we perform a modal analysis of the oscillator noise in which each mode corresponds to a particular temporal/spectral shape of the pulsed light. We compare this modal approach with the conventional noise detection methods and find the superiority of our method in particular unveiling a complete physical picture of noise distribution in femtosecond oscillator.

Even though Gaussian quantum states of multimode light are promising quantum resources due to their scalability, non-Gaussianity is indispensable for quantum technologies, in particular to reach quantum computational advantage. However, embodying non-Gaussianity in a multimode Gaussian state remains a challenge as controllable non-Gaussian operations are hard to implement in a multimode scenario. Here, we report the first generation of non-Gaussian quantum states of a multimode light field by subtracting a photon in a desired mode from multimode Gaussian states, and observe negativity of the Wigner function. For entangled Gaussian states, we observe that photon subtraction makes non-Gaussianity spread among various entangled modes. In addition to applications in quantum technologies, our results shed new light on non-Gaussian multimode entanglement with particular emphasis on quantum networks.

In this work, we investigate three different compact fibered systems generating vacuum squeezing that involve optical cavities limited by the end surface of a fiber and by a curved mirror and containing a thin parametric crystal. These systems have the advantage to couple squeezed states directly to a fiber, allowing the user to benefit from the flexibility of fibers in the use of squeezing. Three types of fibers are investigated: standard single-mode fibers, photonic-crystal large mode area single-mode fibers and short multi-mode fiber taped to a single-mode fiber. The observed squeezing is modest (-0.56 dB, -0.9 dB, -1 dB), but these experiments open the way to miniaturized squeezing devices that could be a very interesting advantage in scaling up quantum systems for quantum processing, opening new perspectives in the domain of integrated quantum optics.

Accurate time transfer has become a crucial issue for future space experiments which require increasing resolution over large distances. In 2008, a scheme combining homodyne detection and mode-locked femtosecond lasers was proposed that leads to a potential timing precision reaching the yoctosecond range; with a multimode quantum frequency comb as the input field, the sub-shot noise measurement for the time transfer can further improve the timing precision. Based on this scheme and applying the multimode squeezing frequency comb that was measured to have a phase quadrature quantum noise reduction of 1.5 dB at the analyzing frequency 2MHz, the measurable timing fluctuation was reduced from a shot-noise limited value of 8.9E-23s to 7.5E-23s. We present an upconversion imaging experiment from the near-infrared to the visible spectrum. Using a dedicated broadband pump laser to increase the number of resolved elements converted in the image we obtain up to 56x64 spatial elements with a 2.7 nm wide pump spectrum, more than 10 times the number of elements accessible with a narrowband laser. Results in terms of field of view, resolution and conversion efficiency are in good agreement with simulations. The computed sensitivity of our experiment favorably compares with direct InGaAs camera detection.

We study the quantum correlations induced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) of a frequency comb. We derive a theoretical method to find the output state corresponding to a pump with an arbitrary spectral profile. After applying it to the relevant example of a spectrally chirped pump, we run an optimization algorithm to numerically find the pump profiles maximizing some target functions. These include the number of independently squeezed modes and the variances of nullifiers defining cluster states used in many continuous-variable quantum information protocols. The addition or subtraction of a photon from a Gaussian state of light is a versatile and experimentally feasible procedure to create non-Gaussian states. In multimode setups, these states manifest a wide range of phenomena when the photon is added or subtracted in a mode-tunable way. In this contribution, we derive the truncated correlations, which are multimode generalisations of cumulants, between quadratures in different modes as statistical signatures of these states. These correlations are then used to obtain the full multimode Wigner function, the properties of which are subsequently studied. In particular we investigate the effect of impurity in the subtraction or addition process, and evaluate its impact on the negativity of the Wigner function. Non-Gaussian operations are essential to exploit the quantum advantages in optical continuous variable quantum information protocols. We focus on mode-selective photon addition and subtraction as experimentally promising processes to create multimode non-Gaussian states. Our approach is based on correlation functions, as is common in quantum statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics, mixed with quantum optics tools. We formulate an analytical expression of the Wigner function after subtraction or addition of a single photon, for arbitrarily many modes. It is used to demonstrate entanglement properties specific to non-Gaussian states, and also leads to a practical and elegant condition for Wigner function negativity. Finally, we analyse the potential of photon addition and subtraction for an experimentally generated multimode Gaussian state.

An experimental scheme is introduced to measure multiple parameters that are encoded in the phase quadrature of a light beam. Using a modal description and a spectrally-resolved homodyne detection, it is shown that all of the information is collected simultaneously, such that a single measurement allows extracting the value of multiple parameters \emph{post-facto}. With a femtosecond laser source, we apply this scheme to a measurement of the delay between two pulses with a shot-noise limited sensitivity as well as extracting the dispersion value of a dispersive medium.

Single-photon subtraction plays important roles in optical quantum information processing as it provides a non-Gaussian characteristic in continuous-variable quantum information. While the conventional way of implementing single-photon subtraction based on a low-reflectance beam splitter works properly for a single-mode quantum state, it is unsuitable for a multimode quantum state because a single photon is subtracted from all multiple modes without maintaining their mode coherence. Here we experimentally implement and characterize a mode-tunable coherent single-photon subtractor based on sum frequency generation. It can subtract a single photon exclusively from one desired time-frequency mode of light or from a coherent superposition of multiple time-frequency modes. To fully characterize the implemented single-photon subtractions, we employ quantum process tomography based on coherent states. The mode-tunable coherent single-photon subtractor will be an essential element for realizing non-Gaussian quantum networks necessary to get a quantum advantage in information processing.

We present the quantum theory of the measurement of bosonic particles by multipixel detectors. For the sake of clarity, we specialize on beams of photons. We study the measurement of different spatial beam characteristics, as position and width. The limits of these measurements are set by the quantum nature of the light field. We investigate how both, detector imperfections and finite pixel size affect the photon counting distribution. An analytic theory for the discretized measurement scheme is derived. We discuss the results and compare them to the theory presented by Chille et al. in "Quantum uncertainty in the beam width of spatial optical modes," Opt. Express 23, 32777 (2015), which investigates the beam width noise independently of the measurement system. Finally, we present numerical simulations which furnish realistic and promising predictions for possible experimental studies.

In this work we introduce a general scheme for measurement based quantum computation in continuous variables. Our approach does not necessarily rely on the use of ancillary cluster states to achieve its aim, but rather on the detection of a resource state in a suitable mode basis followed by digital post-processing, and involves an optimization of the adjustable experimental parameters. A methodology is introduced that enables an absolute, quantum-limited measurement of sub-wavelength interferometric displacements. The technique utilizes a high-frequency optical path modulation within an interferometer operated in a homodyne configuration. All of the information necessary to fully characterize the resultant path displacement is contained within the relative strengths of the various harmonics of the phase modulation. The method, which is straightforward and readily implementable, allows a direct measurement of the theoretical Cram\'er-Rao limit of detection without any assumptions on the nature of the light source.

The subtraction of a single photon from a multimode quantum field is analyzed as the conditional evolution of an open quantum system. We develop a theory describing different subtraction schemes in a unified approach and we introduce the concept of subtraction modes intrinsic to the process. The matching between the subtraction modes and the modes of the field defines different possible scenarios for the photon subtraction. In particular, our framework identifies: the conditions of pure photon subtraction, the quantum states of the field modes conditioned to the photon subtraction, the mode with the highest fidelity with a single-photon state when the subtraction is performed on multimode squeezed light. We use our theory to analyze the photon subtraction from a highly multimode quantum resource - a train of quantum squeezed or correlated optical pulses. Performing the photon subtraction optimally on various multimode light field has the potential to implement a number of quantum information protocols in a multiplexed and scalable way.

We theoretically investigate the quantum uncertainty in the beam width of transverse optical modes and, for this purpose, define a corresponding quantum operator. Single mode states are studied as well as multimode states with small quantum noise. General relations are derived, and specific examples of different modes and quantum states are examined. For the multimode case, we show that the quantum uncertainty in the beam width can be completely attributed to the amplitude quadrature uncertainty of one specific mode, which is uniquely determined by the field under investigation. This discovery provides us with a strategy for the reduction of the beam width noise by an appropriate choice of the quantum state.

Cavity-based noise detection schemes are combined with ultrafast pulse shaping as a means to diagnose the spectral correlations of both the amplitude and phase noise of an ultrafast frequency comb. The comb is divided into ten spectral regions, and the distribution of noise as well as the correlations between all pairs of spectral regions are measured against the quantum limit. These correlations are then represented in the form of classical noise matrices, which furnish a complete description of the underlying comb dynamics. Their eigendecomposition reveals a set of theoretically predicted, decoupled noise modes that govern the dynamics of the comb. Finally, the matrices contain the information necessary to deduce macroscopic noise properties of the comb.

The ability to engineer the quantum state of traveling optical fields is a central requirement for quantum information science and technology, including quantum communication, computing and metrology. In this video article, we describe the reliable generation of non-Gaussian states, including single-photon states and coherent state superpositions, using a conditional preparation method operated on the non-classical light emitted by optical parametric oscillators. Type-I and type-II phase-matched OPOs operated below threshold, i.e. single-mode or two-mode squeezed vacuum sources, are considered and common procedures, such as the required frequency filtering or the high-efficiency quantum state characterization by homodyning, are detailed. The reported method enables a high fidelity with the targeted state and the generation of the state in a well-controlled spatiotemporal mode, a crucial feature for their use in subsequent protocols., Comment: Written in JoVE style. We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse shaping techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to create continuous-variable cluster states from the quantum comb is analyzed. Multiple cluster states are shown to be simultaneously embedded in the SPOPO state, and these states can be revealed by a suitable basis change applied to the measured covariance matrix.

The sensitivity of homodyne timing measurements with femtosecond lasers is only limited by the amplitude and phase noise. We describe a novel method to analyze the phase noise of a Ti:Sapph oscillator relative to the standard quantum limit. The broadband passive cavity used to this aim also filters lowest levels of classical noise at sidebands above 100kHz detection frequency. Leading to quantum limited carrier-envelope-phase noise at $\mu$s-timescales, it can improve the sensitivity of a highly sensitive, homodyne timing jitter measurement by 2 orders of magnitude.

We revisit the problem of quantum state reconstruction of light beams from the photocurrent quantum noise. As is well-known, but often overlooked, two longitudinal field modes contribute to each spectral component of the photocurrent (sideband modes). We show that spectral homodyne detection is intrinsically incapable of providing all the information needed for the full reconstruction of the two-mode spectral quantum state. Such a limitation is overcome by the technique of resonator detection. A detailed theoretical description and comparison of both methods is presented, as well as an experiment to measure the six-mode quantum state of pump-signal-idler beams of an optical parametric oscillator above the oscillation threshold., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

The wave-particle duality of light has led to two different encodings for optical quantum information processing. Several approaches have emerged based either on particle-like discrete-variable states, e.g. finite-dimensional quantum systems, or on wave-like continuous-variable states, e.g. infinite-dimensional systems. Here, we demonstrate the first measurement-induced generation of entanglement between optical qubits of these different types, located at distant places and connected by a lossy channel. Such hybrid entanglement, which is a key resource for a variety of recently proposed schemes, including quantum cryptography and computing, enables to convert information from one Hilbert space to the other via teleportation and therefore connect remote quantum processors based upon different encodings. Beyond its fundamental significance for the exploration of entanglement and its possible instantiations, our optical circuit opens the promises for heterogeneous network implementations, where discrete and continuous-variable operations and techniques can be efficiently combined.

Spectral homodyne detection, a widely used technique for measuring quantum properties of light beams, cannot retrieve all the information needed to reconstruct the quantum state of spectral field modes. We show that full quantum state reconstruction can be achieved with the alternative measurement technique of resonator detection. We experimentally demonstrate this difference by engineering a quantum state with features that go undetected by homodyne detection but are clearly revealed by resonator detection., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The characterization or subsequent use of propagating optical quantum state requires the knowledge of its precise temporal mode. Defining this mode structure very often relies on a detailed a priori knowledge of the used resources, when available, and can additionally call for an involved theoretical modeling. In contrast, here we investigate a practical method enabling to infer the optimal temporal mode directly from experimental data acquired via homodyne detection, without any assumptions on the state. The approach is based on a multimode analysis using eigenfunction expansion of the autocorrelation function. This capability is illustrated by experimental data from Fock states and Schrodinger cat-like state preparation.

Highly entangled quantum networks cluster states lie at the heart of recent approaches to quantum computing \cite{Nielsen2006,Lloyd2012}. Yet, the current approach for constructing optical quantum networks does so one node at a time \cite{Furusawa2008,Furusawa2009,Peng2012}, which lacks scalability. Here we demonstrate the \emph{single-step} fabrication of a multimode quantum network from the parametric downconversion of femtosecond frequency combs. Ultrafast pulse shaping \cite{weiner2000} is employed to characterize the comb's spectral entanglement \cite{vanLoock2003}. Each of the 511 possible bipartitions among ten spectral regions is shown to be entangled; furthermore, an eigenmode decomposition reveals that eight independent quantum channels \cite{Braunstein2005} (qumodes) are subsumed within the comb. This multicolor entanglement imports the classical concept of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) to the quantum domain by playing upon frequency entanglement as a means to elevate quantum channel capacity. The quantum frequency comb is easily addressable, robust with respect to decoherence, and scalable, which renders it a unique tool for quantum information.

We calculate the quantum Cram\'er--Rao bound for the sensitivity with which one or several parameters, encoded in a general single-mode Gaussian state, can be estimated. This includes in particular the interesting case of mixed Gaussian states. We apply the formula to the problems of estimating phase, purity, loss, amplitude, and squeezing. In the case of the simultaneous measurement of several parameters, we provide the full quantum Fisher information matrix. Our results unify previously known partial results, and constitute a complete solution to the problem of knowing the best possible sensitivity of measurements based on a single-mode Gaussian state.

We study the possibility of producing and detecting continuous variable cluster states in an optical set-up in an extremely compact fashion. This method is based on a multi-pixel homodyne detection system recently demonstrated experimentally, which includes classical data post-processing. It allows to incorporate the linear optics network, usually employed in standard experiments for the production of cluster states, in the stage of the measurement. After giving an example of cluster state generation by this method, we further study how this procedure can be generalized to perform gaussian quantum computation., Comment: Eqs.(20)-(21) corrected

We study in this paper the efficiency of different two-photon states of light to induce the simultaneous excitation of two atoms of different kinds when the sum of the energies of the two photons matches the sum of the energies of the two atomic transitions, while no photons are resonant with each individual transition. We find that entangled two-photon states produced by an atomic cascade are indeed capable of enhancing by a large factor the simultaneous excitation probability as compared to uncorrelated photons, as predicted some years ago by Muthukrishnan et al, but that several non-entangled, separable, correlated states, produced either by an atomic cascade or parametric down conversion, or even appropriate combinations of coher- ent states, have comparable efficiencies. We show that the key ingredient for the increase of simultaneous excitation probability is the presence of strong frequency anti-correlation and not time correlation nor time-frequency entanglement.

Using a continuous-wave type-II optical parametric oscillator below threshold, we have demonstrated a novel source of heralded single-photons with high-fidelity. The generated state is characterized by homodyne detection and exhibits a 79% fidelity with a single-photon Fock state (91% after correction of detection loss). The low admixture of vacuum and the well-defined spatiotemporal mode are critical requirements for their subsequent use in quantum information processing.

We propose a direct and real-time ranging scheme using an optical frequency combs, able to compensate optically for index of refraction variations due to atmospheric parameters. This scheme could be useful for applications requiring stringent precision over a long distance in air, a situation where dispersion becomes the main limitation. The key ingredient is the use of a mode-locked laser as a precise source for multi-wavelength interferometry in a homodyne detection scheme. By shaping temporally the local oscillator, one can directly access the desired parameter (distance) while being insensitive to fluctuations induced by parameters of the environment such as pressure, temperature, humidity and CO$_2$ content.

Single-photons play an important role in emerging quantum technologies and information processing. An efficient generation technique consists in preparing such states via a conditional measurement on photon-number correlated beams: the detection of a single-photon on one of the beam can herald the generation of a single-photon state on the other one. Such scheme strongly depends on the heralding detector properties, such as its quantum efficiency, noise or photon-number resolution ability. These parameters affect the preparation rate and the fidelity of the generated state. After reviewing the theoretical description of optical detectors and conditional measurements, and how both are here connected, we evaluate the effects of these properties and compare two kind of devices, a conventional on/off detector and a two-channel detector with photon-number resolution ability.

We present in this paper a general model for determining the quantum properties of the light generated by a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) operating below threshold. This model considers time and frequency on an equal footing, which allows us to find new quantum properties, related for example to the carrier envelope offset (CEO) phase, and to consider situations that are close to real experiments. We show that, in addition to multimode squeezing in the so-called 'supermodes', the system exhibits quadrature entanglement between frequency combs of opposite CEO phases. We have also determined the quantum properties of the individual pulses and their quantum correlations with the neighboring pulses. The generation of continuous-variable multipartite entangled states is important for several protocols of quantum information processing and communication, such as one-way quantum computation or controlled dense coding. In this article we theoretically show that multimode optical parametric oscillators can produce a great variety of such states by an appropriate control of the parametric interaction, what we accomplish by tailoring either the spatio-temporal shape of the pump, or the geometry of the nonlinear medium. Specific examples involving currently available optical parametric oscillators are given, hence showing that our ideas are within reach of present technology., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The interaction of a quantum system with the environment leads to the so-called quantum decoherence. Beyond its fundamental significance, the understanding and the possible control of this dynamics in various scenarios is a key element for mastering quantum information processing. Here we report the quantitative probing of what can be called the quantum decoherence of detectors, a process reminiscent of the decoherence of quantum states in the presence of coupling with a reservoir. We demonstrate how the quantum features of two single-photon counters vanish under the influence of a noisy environment. We thereby experimentally witness the transition between the full-quantum operation of the measurement device to the "semi-classical regime", described by a positive Wigner function. The exact border between these two regimes is explicitely determined and measured experimentally.

Multimode Gaussian quantum light, which includes multimode squeezed and multipartite quadrature entangled light, is a very general and powerful quantum resource with promising applications in quantum information processing and metrology. In this paper, we determine the ultimate sensitivity in the estimation of any parameter when the information about this parameter is encoded in such light, irrespective of the information extraction protocol used in the estimation and of the measured observable. In addition we show that an appropriate homodyne detection scheme allows us to reach this ultimate sensitivity. We show that, for a given set of available quantum resources, the most economical way to maximize the sensitivity is to put the most squeezed state available in a well-de ned light mode. This implies that it is not possible to take advantage of the existence of squeezed fluctuations in other modes, nor of quantum correlations and entanglement between diff erent modes.

We perform the quantum analysis of the light emitted by a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator operating in the above threshold regime, i.e. when the peak power of pulsed pumping exceeds the threshold of continuous generation. We show that both regimes (below and above threshold) are realized at different times within each pulse of the signal field. We show that the quantum fluctuations of signal and pump pulses are correlated between nearby pulses at times that are placed in the same position relative to the center of the pulses, whereas fluctuations are totally not correlated at different times within the same pulse. The model also predicts the existence of cross-correlations between pump and signal pulses. It is shown theoretically that there is suppression of quantum noise at the frequencies multiple of the pulse repetition frequency in the spectra of phase quadratures of pump and signal fields measured by a balanced homodyne detection with a pulsed local oscillator., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Multimode nonclassical states of light are an essential resource in quantum computation with continuous variables, for example in cluster state computation. They can be generated either by mixing different squeezed light sources using linear optical operations, or directly in a multimode optical device. In parallel, frequency combs are perfect tools for high precision metrological applications and for quantum time transfer. Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillators (SPOPOs) have been theoretically shown to produce multimode non-classical frequency combs. In this paper, we present the first experimental generation and characterization of a femtosecond quantum frequency comb generated by a SPOPO. In particular, we give the experimental evidence of the multimode nature of the generated quantum state and, by studying the spectral noise distribution of this state, we show that at least three nonclassical independent modes are required to describe it.
