We investigated how the surrounding environment influences the growth of dominant trees and their responses to temperature and insect epidemics in boreal forests of eastern Canada. We focused on 82 black spruce and jack pine focal trees in stands spanning a double gradient of species diversity and soil texture within a 36 km2 area of western Quebec. For these trees, we compared their diameter at breast height, growth rates, temperature–growth relations, and growth during insect defoliator epidemics. We used linear models to study how surrounding tree attributes and soil properties affected the growth of focal trees. Models showed that tree growth responses and responses to temperature and insect epidemics were generally negative with higher intraspecific competition and positive with greater tree species diversity. Growth of both species benefitted from lower soil sand content. Our research offers novel insights on the potential role of the surrounding environment, notably tree competition and species diversity, in mitigating the vulnerability of eastern Canada's boreal trees to anthropogenic climate change and insect epidemics.

Black spruce (Picea mariana Mill. B.S.P.), is a dominant species emblematic of eastern Canada's boreal forests. It grows in a vast array of climatic conditions ranging from cold maritime-oceanic climates near the Labrador Sea shore to cold continental conditions in the central portions of Quebec-Labrador. However, along the continentality gradient, timing and provenance of heat and moisture that support growth are uncertain, weakening our capacity to describe and predict the response of boreal ecosystems to climate variability. Here, we measured oxygen isotope composition in tree-ring cellulose of black spruces from three sites, and provide evidence of a direct influence of the Labrador Sea on adjacent continental ecosystems. Our results report a landwards decrease in δ18Otrc, a pattern that is also visible in the simulated oxygen isotope composition of precipitation water (δ18Op). We also reveal a landwards decoupling between δ18Otrc variability (1950-2013) and maximum temperature (Tmax) variations over the Northwest Atlantic. Our results imply that tree-ring oxygen isotopes may be of great help to circumscribe the spatial extent of Labrador Sea's influence on surrounding boreal ecosystems. Moreover, our study reveals that despite of their apparent ecological homogeneity, eastern Canada’s black spruce forests clearly rely on heterogeneous sources of heat and moisture.

Long-term disturbance histories, reconstructed using diverse paleoecological tools, provide high-quality information about pre-observational periods. These data offer a portrait of past environmental variability for understanding the long-term patterns in climate and disturbance regimes and the forest ecosystem response to these changes. Paleoenvironmental records also provide a longer-term context against which current anthropogenic-related environmental changes can be evaluated. Records of the long-term interactions between disturbances, vegetation, and climate help guide forest management practices that aim to mirror “natural” disturbance regimes. In this chapter, we outline how paleoecologists obtain these long-term data sets and extract paleoenvironmental information from a range of sources. We demonstrate how the reconstruction of key disturbances in the boreal forest, such as fire and insect outbreaks, provides critical long-term views of disturbance-climate-vegetation interactions. Recent developments of novel proxies are highlighted to illustrate advances in reconstructing millennial-scale disturbance-related dynamics and how this new information benefits the sustainable management of boreal forests in a rapidly changing climate.

Oxygen stable isotopes measured in tree rings have been useful for reconstructing climate variability and explaining changes in physiological processes occurring in forests, complementing other more widely studied tree-ring parameters such as ring width. Here, we analyzed the relationships between different climate parameters and annually resolved tree-ring δ18O records (d18OTR) from white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench]Voss) trees located near Tungsten, Northwest Territories, Canada, and used the NASA GISS ModelE2 isotopically equipped general circulation model (GCM) to interpret the relationships in an idealized sense. The d18OTR series were primarily related to temperature variations in spring and summer, likely through temperature effects on the precipitation δ18O with a combination of evaporative enrichment at leaf level in summer. The GCM simulations showed significant positive relationships between modelled precipitation δ18O over the study region and surface temperature and geopotential height over northwestern North America, with stronger patterns during fall winter than during spring-summer. The modelled precipitation δ18O was only significantly associated with moisture transport during the fall-winter season. The d18OTR showed similar correlation patterns to modelled precipitation δ18O during spring-summer, with significant positive correlations with surface temperature and geopotential height, but no correlations with moisture transport. Overall, the d18OTR records for northwestern Canada reflect the same significant large-scale climate patterns as precipitation δ18O for spring-summer, and therefore have potential for reconstructions past atmospheric dynamics in addition to temperature variability.

Sapwood characteristics, such as sapwood area as well as thermal and hydraulic conductivity, are linked to species-specific hydraulic function and resource allocation to water transport tissues (xylem). These characteristics are often unknown and thus a major source of uncertainty in sap flow data processing and transpiration estimates because bulk rather than species-specific values are usually applied. Here, we analyzed the sapwood characteristics of fifteen common tree species in eastern North America from different taxa (i.e., angiosperms and gymnosperms) and xylem porosity groups (i.e., tracheid-bearing, diffuse- or ring-porous species). We quantified their sapwood area changes with stem diameter (allometric scaling) and thermal conductivity. We combined these measurements with species-specific values of wood density and hydraulic conductivity found in literature and assessed the role of wood anatomy in orchestrating their covariation. Angiosperms (ring- and diffuse-porous species), with specialized vessels for water transport, showed steeper relation (scaling) between tree size and sapwood area in comparison to gymnosperms (tracheid-bearing species). Despite the variability in thermal conductivity between species, gymnosperms (angiosperms) were characterized by lower (higher) wood density and higher (lower) sapwood moisture content, resulting in non-significant differences in sapwood thermal conductivity between taxa and xylem porosity groups. Clustering of species sapwood characteristics based on taxa or xylem porosity could facilitate more accurate parameterizations of these attributes. When combined with an increasing number of sap flow observations, these findings can improve tree- and landscape-level transpiration estimates, leading to more robust partitioning of terrestrial water fluxes.

Monitoring of forest response to gradual environmental changes or abrupt disturbances provides insights into how forested ecosystems operate and allows for quantification of forest health. In this chapter, we provide an overview ofSmartforestsCanada, a national-scale research network consisting of regional investigators who support a wealth of existing and new monitoring sites. The objectives ofSmartforestsare threefold: (1) establish and coordinate a network of high-precision monitoring plots across a 4400 km gradient of environmental and forest conditions, (2) synthesize the collected multivariate observations to examine the effects of global changes on complex above- and belowground forest dynamics and resilience, and (3) analyze the collected data to guide the development of the next-generation forest growth models and inform policy-makers on best forest management and adaptation strategies. We present the methodological framework implemented inSmartforeststo fulfill the aforementioned objectives. We then use an example from a temperate hardwoodSmartforestssite in Quebec to illustrate our approach for climate-smart forestry. We conclude by discussing how information from theSmartforestsnetwork can be integrated with existing data streams, from within Canada and abroad, guiding forest management and the development of climate change adaptation strategies.

The representation of snow processes in forest growth models is necessary to accurately predict the hydrological cycle in boreal ecosystems and the isotopic signature of soil water extracted by trees, photosynthates and tree-ring cellulose. Yet, most process-based models do not include a snow module, consequently their simulations may be biased in cold environments. Here, we modified the MAIDENiso model to incorporate a new snow module that simulates snow accumulation, melting and sublimation, as well as thermal exchanges driving freezing and thawing of the snow and the soil. We tested these implementations in two sites in East and West Canada for black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca) forests, respectively. The new snow module improves the skills of the model to predict components of the hydrological cycle. The model is now able to reproduce the spring discharge peak and to simulate stable oxygen isotopes in tree-ring cellulose more realistically than in the original, snow-free version of the model. The new implementation also results in simulations with a higher contribution from the source water on the oxygen isotopic composition of the simulated cellulose, leading to more accurate estimates. Future work may include the development of inverse modelling with the new version of MAIDENiso to produce robust reconstructions of the hydrological cycle and isotope processes in cold environments.

Tree-ring chronologies underpin the majority of annually-resolved reconstructions of Common Era climate. However, they are derived using different datasets and techniques, the ramifications of which have hitherto been little explored. Here, we report the results of a double-blind experiment that yielded 15 Northern Hemisphere summer temperature reconstructions from a common network of regional tree-ring width datasets. Taken together as an ensemble, the Common Era reconstruction mean correlates with instrumental temperatures from 1794–2016 CE at 0.79 (p, Tree rings are a crucial archive for Common Era climate reconstructions, but the degree to which methodological decisions influence outcomes is not well known. Here, the authors show how different approaches taken by 15 different groups influence the ensemble temperature reconstruction from the same data.

Clustering of species sapwood characteristics based on taxonomic or xylem porosity groups and constraining these parameters could facilitate more accurate sap flow calculations and tree water use estimates. When combined with an increasing number of sap flow observations, these findings should improve tree- and landscape-level transpiration estimates, leading to more robust partitioning of terrestrial water fluxes.

International audience; Tree-rings are one of the most commonly used proxies for reconstructing past climates at annual resolution. The climate information is generally deduced from tree-rings using statistical relationships, but the assumed linearity and stationarity may be inadequate. Process-based models allow for non-stationarity and non-linearity; however, many challenges are associated with their application for global scale reconstructions. In this study, we aim to test the feasibility of using the mechanistic model MAIDEN at the global scale for paleoclimate reconstructions based on data assimilation by applying it to the PAGES2k tree-ring width database. We also compare its performance with the simpler model VS-Lite, often used in global applications. Both models are skillful in terms of calibration and verification correlations for a similar number of sites (63 and 64 for VS-Lite and MAIDEN, respectively). VS-Lite tends to perform better for sites where the climate signal in tree-rings is strong and clear. By contrast, MAIDEN's performance is likely mostly limited by the lack of data (for example, daily Gross Primary Production data or phenological timings) needed to accurately calibrate the model. However, when the calibration is robust, both models reproduce well the observed link between climate and tree-growth. In general, VS-Lite tends to overestimate the climate signal in tree-rings compared to MAIDEN, which better reproduces the magnitude of the climate signal on average. Our results show that both models are complementary and can be applied at the global scale to reconstruct past climates using an adequate protocol designed to exploit existing tree-ring data.

Tree-ring archives are one of the main sources of information to reconstruct climate variations over the last millennium with annual resolution. The links between tree-ring proxies and climate have usually been estimated using statistical approaches, assuming linear and stationary relationships. Both assumptions may be inadequate but this issue can be overcome by ecophysiological modelling based on mechanistic understanding. In this respect, the model MAIDEN (Modeling and Analysis In DENdroecology) simulating tree ring growth from daily temperature and precipitation, considering carbon assimilation and allocation in forest stands, may constitute a valuable tool. However, the lack of local meteorological data and the limited characterisation of tree species traits can complicate the calibration and validation of such complex model, which may hamper paleoclimate applications. The goal of this study is to test the applicability of the MAIDEN model in a paleoclimate context using as a test case tree ring observations covering the twentieth century from twenty-one Eastern Canadian taiga sites and three European sites. More specifically, we investigate the model sensitivity to parameters calibration and to the quality of climatic inputs and evaluate the model performance using a validation procedure. We also examine the added value of using MAIDEN in paleoclimate applications compared to a simpler tree-growth model, VS-Lite. A bayesian calibration of the most sensitive model parameters provides good results at most of the selected sites with high correlations between simulated and observed tree-growth. Although MAIDEN is found to be sensitive to the quality of the climatic inputs, simple bias-correction and downscaling techniques of these data improve significantly the performance of the model. The split-sample validation of MAIDEN gives encouraging results but requires long tree-ring and meteorological series to give robust results. We also highlight a risk of overfitting in the calibration of model parameters that increases with short series. Finally, MAIDEN has shown higher calibration and validation correlations in most cases compared to VS-Lite. Nevertheless, this latter model turns out to be more stable over calibration and validation periods. Our results provide a protocol for the application of MAIDEN to potentially any site with tree-ring width data in the extratropical region.

International audience; Quantile mapping (QM) represents a common post-processing technique used to connect climate simulations to impact studies at different spatial scales. Depending on the simulation-observation spatial scale mismatch, QM can be used for two different applications. The first application uses only the bias correction component, establishing transfer functions between observations and simulations at similar spatial scales. The second application includes a statistical downscaling component when point-scale observations are considered. However, knowledge of alterations to climate change signal (CCS) resulting from these two applications is limited. This study investigates QM impacts on the original temperature and precipitation CCSs when applied according to a bias correction only (BC-only) and a bias correction plus downscaling (BC + DS) application over reference stations in Central Italy. BC-only application is used to adjust regional climate model (RCM) simulations having the same resolution as the observation grid. QM BC + DS application adjusts the same simulations to point-wise observations. QM applications alter CCS mainly for temperature. BC-only application produces a CCS of the median ~ 1 °C lower than the original (~ 4.5 °C). BC + DS application produces CCS closer to the original, except over the summer 95th percentile, where substantial amplification of the original CCS resulted. The impacts of the two applications are connected to the ratio between the observed and the simulated standard deviation (STD) of the calibration period. For the precipitation, original CCS is essentially preserved in both applications. Yet, calibration period STD ratio cannot predict QM impact on the precipitation CCS when simulated STD and mean are similarly misrepresented.

International audience; The most accurate understanding of forest functioning during drought is crucial to improve the forecast of future forest productivity. Here we investigate the ecophysiological responses (i.e. primary production, evapotranspiration and water use efficiency) of European beech to drought events with the ecosystem model MuSICA, using as benchmark the observed fluxes at the experimental forest Hesse (France). We show that MuSICA is able to realistically simulate observed drought-induced limitations. Subsequently we use simulation experiments to provide: (1) a quantification of the reduction of ecosystem fluxes during the 2003 drought, (2) a partitioning of heat stress and water limitations during droughts, (3) an analysis of the impact of specific drought trajectories, and (4) an evaluation of the potential impact of projected climate change on the studied forest and (5) over the beech distributional range. Our results show that the 2003 drought resulted in a 17% reduction of annual gross primary production and in a 21% reduction of evapotranspiration at Hesse. The studied forest ecosystem is mostly sensitive to negative precipitation anomalies (82% of the reduced forest productivity in 2003) and almost insensitive to heat stress due to high temperatures (16%). Moreover, we show that the ecosystem fluxes are limited more by fast drought onsets in the early growing season (June-July) than by onsets later in the season. Deciphering the impact of future climate change on beech productivity is complicated by large uncertainties in projected future precipitation and in the severity of extreme dry years. Drastic reduction of ecosystem fluxes is only predicted with climate projections that show marked reductions in precipitation. However, increased CO2 fertilization in the future will counterbalance negative drought impacts. This modelling-based study improves our understanding of the functioning of an emblematic European tree species during extreme events and informs on potential future forest responses to projected climate change.

International audience; The Tambora eruption (1815 AD) was one of the major eruptions of the last two millennia and has noequivalents over the last two centuries. Here, we collected an extensive network of earlymeteorological time series, climate simulation data and numerous, well-replicated proxy records from Eastern Canada to analyze the strength and the persistence of the Tambora impact on the regional climate and forest processes. Our results show that the Tambora impacts on the terrestrial biosphere were stronger than previously thought, and not only affected tree growth and carbon uptake for a longer period than registered in the regional climate, but also determined forest demography and structure. Increased tree mortality, four times higher than the background level, indicates that the Tambora climatic impact propagated to influence the structure of the North American taiga for several decades.We also show that the Tambora signal is more persistent in observed data (temperature, river ice dynamics, forest growth, tree mortality) than in simulated ones (climate and forest-growth simulations), indicating that our understanding of the mechanisms amplifying volcanic perturbations on climates and ecosystems is still limited, notably in the North American taiga.

International audience; The Regional Curve Standardization (RCS) is one of the most employed standardization methods to remove biological signals in long tree ring chronologies. The approach assumes that an overall age-related growth trend typify all tree ring series to be included in a standardized tree ring chronology. Although several potential problems of the method have been examined, the influence of varying the sampling height along tree stems has not been evaluated. Considering that age-related growth trends may vary with stem height, biases may arise when combining samples from unknown or variable sampling heights, a frequent situation with subfossil logs. In this study we perform a detailed stem analysis of 15 lakeshore black spruce (Picea mariana Mill. B.S.P.) trees in the taiga of eastern Canada to describe how the age-related growth trend varies with stem height and evaluate associated biases in RCS chronologies built from living and subfossil trees. Results show that the age-related growth trends vary markedly and systematically along stems, potentially generating large methodological biases in RCS chronologies, especially near the recent chronology end. These biases may lead to erroneous reconstructions of recent climatic trends and cause false divergence between tree ring and climate series. We have developed a correction procedure that appears efficient in removing these biases from chronologies built with the lakeshore trees and associated subfossil logs.

A better understanding of the coupling between photosynthesis and carbon allocation in the boreal forest, with implicated environmental factors and mechanistic rules, is crucial to accurately predict boreal forest carbon stocks and fluxes, which are significant components of the global carbon budget. Here we adapted the MAIDEN ecophysiological forest model to better consider important processes for boreal tree species, such as non-linear acclimation of photosynthesis to 15 temperature changes, canopy development as a function of previous year climate variables influencing bud formation, and temperature dependence of carbon partition in summer. We tested these modifications in the eastern Canadian taiga using black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) gross primary production and ring-width data. MAIDEN explains 90% of the observed daily gross primary production variability, 73% of the full spectrum of the annual ring width variability and 20-30% of its high frequency component. The positive effect on stem growth due to climate warming in the last decades is well 20 captured by the model. In addition, we illustrate the improvement achieved with each introduced model adaptation and compare the model results with those of linear response functions. This shows that MAIDEN simulates robust relationships with the most important climate variables (those detected by classical response-function analysis), and is a powerful tool for understanding how environmental factors interact with black spruce ecophysiology to influence present-day and future boreal forest carbon fluxes. 25

Although wildfire is the main natural disturbance factor driving changes in the North American boreal forest, understanding how the fire history of the last millennium shaped the present-day landscape diversity is a difficult task due to the lack of palaeoecological reconstructions with high spatial (few hundreds of square metres) and temporal (annual) resolutions. 2. We combined a detailed inventory of the present-day lakeshore forest of two lakes of the Eastern Canadian taiga with the dendrochronological dating of the subfossil logs that accumulated in the lit-toral zones facing these shores. Our objective was to compare the millennial impact of wildfires among stands of various structures and compositions. Past stem densities and fire years were reconstructed from log recruitment rates and dating of charred logs. 3. Multivariate analysis of the present-day lakeshore forest revealed three and two homogeneous shore segments per site (i.e. clusters). Cluster 1 at both sites exhibited denser forest, higher dead wood values and a higher percentage of balsam fir, a fire-sensitive species. 4. In total, 426 and 611 subfossil logs (mostly black spruce) were crossdated over the last ~1400 years. Their dendrochronological analysis confirmed that each lakeshore cluster, identified from the traits of the present-day forest, experienced a specific fire history over the last millennium (i.e. 0–5 fires of variable severity) that locally influenced forest composition, tree density and growth. Each fire triggered a specific forest structure trajectory characterized by a different stem density and rate of recovery. 5. Synthesis. This study provides a long-term perspective that helps explain how the present-day landscape diversity in the Eastern Canadian taiga reflects the site-specific fire history over the last millennium. Fires have caused persistent and cumulative impacts resulting in a progressive opening of the forest cover along with balsam fir exclusion. Present-day landscapes are mosaics of forest stands characterized by different times since fire and different post-fire forest structure trajectories.

International audience; 1. Large woody debris (LWD) is an important cross-boundary subsidy that enhances the productivity of lake ecosystems and the stability of aquatic food webs. LWD may also be an important carbon sink because LWD pieces are preserved for centuries in the littoral zone of lakes and rivers. However, a long-term analysis of LWD stocks and fluxes in lakes, coupled with the reconstruction of past disturbances at the site level, has never been attempted. 2. Large woody debris was sampled in five lakes of the Quebec taiga. Actual LWD stocks were described and residence time of the LWD pieces was established using tree-ring and radiocarbon dating. LWD losses by decomposition and burial and other factors influencing LWD residence time were investigated using linear regressions. 3. Impacts of wildfires on LWD fluxes during the last 1400 years were reconstructed separately for the five lakes using piecewise regression models. Fire years at each site were identified from the recruitment dates of charred LWD pieces. 4. Large woody debris volume ranged between 0.92 and 1.57 m 3 per 100 m of shoreline, and extrapolating these results to the landscape scale, it was concluded that LWD littoral carbon pools represent a minimal portion of boreal carbon storage. 5. Large woody debris residence time in boreal lakes was confirmed to be very long. Tree-ring dates of 1571 LWD pieces, mainly black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP.), spanned the last 1400 years, while LWD specimens of older floating chronologies were preserved from decomposition for up to five millennia. The most influential variables explaining the variation in LWD residence time were the degree of burial and the distance from the shore. 6. Large woody debris recruitment rates averaged 5.8 pieces per century per 100 m of shoreline. Fourteen wildfires were the primary cause for changes in the rates of tree establishment in the ripar-ian forests and of LWD recruitment in the lakes. 7. Synthesis. Interactions between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in northern boreal regions are strongly influenced by wildfires whose effects can last for centuries due to the slow large woody debris decay rate. Actual LWD stocks and carbon pools are a legacy of the past fire history.

A denser global network of millennial tree ring chronologies is needed to verify whether the warming of the last century is anomalously rapid or of large amplitude in the context of the last millennium. The North American boreal forest in particular has been poorly represented in long climatic reconstructions based on tree rings, because of short tree longevity, as well as frequent and severe wildfires. In this study, we exhaustively sampled tree remains in the littoral zone of two lakes and partially sampled seven additional lakes in the northern boreal forest of eastern Canada to verify if highly replicated millennial tree ring chronologies could be developed. In total, 989 black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP.) tree remains were sampled, of which 529 could be crossdated, providing a master chronology spanning the AD 676-1991 time period. Radiocarbon dating of a floating chronology indicates that maximum residence time of tree remains outside of sediments is at least 1500 years. Past fires halted or reduced wood inputs at least once at all but one site and thus influenced the replication of local chronologies. However, fire effects can be minimized using appropriate site selection criteria (old-growth forest on the leeward shore, sharp deepening of the littoral zone, burial of tree remains by fine sediments), such that it would be possible to develop a network of several highly and evenly replicated multi-century local chronologies. These tree ring chronologies would have desirable properties for extracting low-frequency tree growth trends and for reconstructing forest disturbance histories. International audience; The interdependence between climatic variables should be taken into account when developing climate scenarios. For example, temperature-precipitation interdependence in the Arctic is strong and impacts on other physical characteristics, such as the extent and duration of snow cover. However, this interdependence is often misrepresented in climate simulations. Here we use two two-dimensional (2-D) methods for statistically adjusting climate model simulations to develop plausible local daily temperature (Tmean) and precipitation (Pr) scenarios. The first 2-D method is based on empirical quantile mapping (2Dqm) and the second on parametric copula models (2Dcopula). Both methods are improved here by forcing the preservation of the modeled long-term warming trend and by using moving windows to obtain an adjustment specific to each day of the year. These methods were applied to a representative ensemble of 13 global climate model simulations at 26 Canadian Arctic coastal sites and tested using an innovative cross-validation approach. Intervariable dependence was evaluated using correlation coefficients and empirical copula density plots. Results show that these 2-D methods, especially 2Dqm, adjust individual distributions of climatic time series as adequately as one common one-dimensional method (1Dqm) does. Furthermore, although 2Dqm outperforms the other methods in reproducing the observed temperature-precipitation interdependence over the calibration period, both 2Dqm and 2Dcopula perform similarly over the validation periods. For cases where temperature-precipitation interdependence is important (e.g., characterizing extreme events and the extent and duration of snow cover), both 2-D methods are good options for producing plausible local climate scenarios in Canadian Arctic coastal zones.

Climatic reconstructions for north-eastern Canada are scarce such that this area is under-represented in global temperature reconstructions. To fill this lack of knowledge and identify the most important processes influencing climate variability, this study presents the first summer temperature reconstruction for eastern Canada based on a millennial oxygen isotopic series (δ18O) from tree rings. For this purpose, we selected 230 well-preserved subfossil stems from the bottom of a boreal lake and five living trees on the lakeshore. The sampling method permitted an annually resolved δ18O series with a replication of five trees per year. The June to August maximal temperature of the last millennium has been reconstructed using the statistical relation between Climatic Research Unit (CRU TS3.1) and δ18O data. The resulting millennial series is marked by the well-defined Medieval Warm Anomaly (AD 1000–1250), the Little Ice Age (AD 1450–1880) and the modern period (AD 1950–2010), and an overall average cooling trend of −0.6 °C/millennium. These climatic periods and climatic low frequency trends are in agreement with the only reconstruction available for northeastern Canada and others from nearby regions (Arctic, Baffin Bay) as well as some remote regions like the Canadian Rockies or Fennoscandia. Our temperature reconstruction clearly indicates that the Medieval Warm Anomaly has been warmer than the modern period, which is relatively cold in the context of the last 1000 years. However, the temperature increase during the last three decades is one of the fastest warming observed over the last millennium (+1.9 °C between 1970 and 2000). An additional key finding of this research is that the coldest episodes mainly coincide with low solar activities and the extremely cold period of the early 19th century has occurred when a solar minimum was in phase with successive intense volcanic eruptions. Our study provides a new perspective unraveling key mechanisms that controlled the past climate shifts in northeastern Canada.

International audience; We present a method of multiproxy reconstruction of the climate of Europe during the last millennium. The proxies used comprise long tree-ring width series, grape harvest dates, Greenland ice oxygen isotope series and temperature indices based on historical documents. The proxies are calibrated using gridded April to September mean temperatures for western Europe, i.e., between 10°W and 20°E and between 35°N and 55°N. They are calibrated also using the long instrumental summer temperature series of the Marseilles observatory of Longchamp, which begins in the mid-eighteenth century. The method is a combination of an analogue technique, which is able to deal with missing data, an artificial neural network technique for an optimal non-linear calibration and a bootstrap technique for calculating error bars on the reconstruction. About 70% of the temperature variance is reconstructed. The amplitude of the past temperature variations is particularly well reconstructed, which is important when considering whether the recent temperature trend is or is not within the natural variability. It appears that the temperature of the last decade of the twentieth century was reached only 14 times during the last millennium. The reconstruction is discussed with respect to other multiproxy and borehole temperature reconstructions. We conclude that a reconstruction such ours, with a specific regional focus (as opposed to the larger Northern Hemisphere) is more reliable and is in better agreement with borehole results, even allowing for the fact that only a part of the long-term variance is reconstructed. 'Little Ice Age' (c. AD 1560 - 1930) summers were 0.2±0.5°C cooler than the 1961 - 1990 period. Borehole temperatures indicate a cooling of 0.4°C which falls in the 95% confidence interval of our reconstructions.

Oxygen isotopes in tree-rings (δ18OTR) are widely used to reconstruct past climates. However, the complexity of climatic and biological processes controlling isotopic fractionation is not yet fully understood. Here, we use the MAIDENiso model to decipher the variability of δ18OTR of two temperature-sensitive species of relevant paleoclimatological interest (Picea mariana and Nothofagus pumilio) and growing at cold high-latitudes in North and South America. In this first modelling study on δ18OTR values in both northeastern Canada (53.86° N) and western Argentina (41.10° S), we specifically aim at: (1) evaluating the predictive skill of MAIDENiso to simulate δ18OTR values, (2) identifying the physical processes controlling δ18OTR by mechanistic modelling and, (3) defining the origin of the temperature signal recorded in the two species. Although the linear regression models used here to predict daily δ18O of precipitation (δ18OP) may need to be improved in the future, the resulting daily δ18OP values adequately reproduce observed (from weather stations) and simulated (by global circulation model) δ18OP series. The δ18OTR values of the two species are correctly simulated using the δ18OP estimation as MAIDENiso input, although some offset in mean δ18OTR levels is observed for the South American site. For both species, the variability of δ18OTR series is more likely linked to the effect of temperature on isotopic enrichment of the leaf water rather than on the isotopic composition of the source water. We show that MAIDENiso is a powerful tool for investigating isotopic fractionation processes but that the lack of a denser isotope-enabled monitoring network recording oxygen fractionation in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere compartments limits our capacity to decipher the processes at play. This study proves that the eco-physiological modelling of δ18OTR values is necessary to interpret the recorded climate signal more reliably.

© 2020 Elsevier GmbH Climate reconstructions for the Common Era are compromised by the paucity of annually-resolved and absolutely-dated proxy records prior to medieval times. Where reconstructions are based on combinations of different climate archive types (of varying spatiotemporal resolution, dating uncertainty, record length and predictive skill), it is challenging to estimate past amplitude ranges, disentangle the relative roles of natural and anthropogenic forcing, or probe deeper interrelationships between climate variability and human history. Here, we compile and analyse updated versions of all the existing summer temperature sensitive tree-ring width chronologies from the Northern Hemisphere that span the entire Common Era. We apply a novel ensemble approach to reconstruct extra-tropical summer temperatures from 1 to 2010 CE, and calculate uncertainties at continental to hemispheric scales. Peak warming in the 280s, 990s and 1020s, when volcanic forcing was low, was comparable to modern conditions until 2010 CE. The lowest June–August temperature anomaly in 536 not only marks the beginning of the coldest decade, but also defines the onset of the Late Antique Little Ice Age (LALIA). While prolonged warmth during Roman and medieval times roughly coincides with the tendency towards societal prosperity across much of the North Atlantic/European sector and East Asia, major episodes of volcanically-forced summer cooling often presaged widespread famines, plague outbreaks and political upheavals. Our study reveals a larger amplitude of spatially synchronized summer temperature variation during the first millennium of the Common Era than previously recognised.
