Weedy rice (Oryza spp.) is one of the most troublesome weeds affecting rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in many countries. Weedy rice control is difficult in rice fields, because the weed and crop are phenotypically and morphologically similar. Weedy rice can be a source of genetic diversity for cultivated rice. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the morphological diversity of weedy rice in southern Brazil. Qualitative and quantitative traits of 249 accessions from eight rice-growing mesoregions in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC) states were analyzed. For each accession, 24 morphological descriptors (14 qualitative and 10 quantitative) were evaluated. All 249 accessions from RS and SC are of indica lineage. Considering all the phenotypic traits evaluated, the accessions separated into 14 distinct groups. One of the largest groups consisted of plants that were predominantly tall with green leaves, intermediate shattering, and variable flowering time. Distinct subgroups exist within larger clusters, showing discernible phenotypic diversity within the main clusters. The variability in flowering time was high (77 to 110 d after emergence), indicating high potential for flowering synchrony with rice cultivars and, consequently, gene flow. This indicates the need to remove escapes when planting herbicide-resistant rice. Thus, weedy rice populations in southern Brazil are highly diverse, and this diversity could result in variable response to weed management.

South African lovegrass (Eragrostis planaNees) is the most important weed of native pastures in southern Brazil. Management options are limited under water-stress conditions, and glyphosate has been the main tool for control. This study compared four salts of glyphosate applied at three growth stages and determined the glyphosate tolerance level. In addition, the performance of ammonium sulfate (AMS) under two soil moisture conditions (50% and 100% of water-holding capacity) and the effect of AMS on absorption and translocation of radiolabeled [14C]glyphosate were evaluated. The potassium salt of glyphosate had the fastest activity across growth stages ofE. plana, which is more vulnerable to glyphosate at the panicle initiation stage. Isopropylamine salt was the slowest-acting glyphosate formulation. Younger plants were typically more easily controlled than older plants at the full tillering stage. The addition of AMS increased the level of control of drought-stressedE. planacompared with glyphosate alone by increasing translocation out of the treated leaf and consequently increasing the concentration of glyphosate in the primary culm. These data can be used to plan an effective management program forE. planathat takes into account the developmental stage of desired pasture grass species.

RNA interference (RNAi) is a next-generation technology for weed management. Weeds would be sprayed with small RNAs (sRNAs) capable of inducing gene silencing (referred to as spray-induced gene silencing, SIGS) without involving the use of transgenes, reaching traditional targets in chemical control, targets that are not today more sensitive to herbicides and even new targets. Here we present the main challenges and opportunities for using SIGS as a practical tool for weed management. The development of SIGS in weed science has been slower compared to other crop protection areas such as entomology and plant pathology due to the difficulty of obtaining stable molecules that easily enter the plant, without off-target risks to crops, and that in small amounts guarantee systemic silencing with effectiveness. To overcome the challenges, it is necessary to achieve the synthesis of sRNAs on a large scale, making the field application practical and economical, develop formulations that protect sRNAs inside and outside the plant, and substantially increase the genomic and transcriptomic information available for weeds. Once these barriers have been overcome, SIGS technology could be similarly used in the field as herbicides are used today, spraying directly on the crop and selectively controlling weeds. This will provide a new tool for weed management, herbicide resistance management, and potentially exploration of new plant enzyme targets never before achieved by chemical control.

Selection pressure caused by continuous use of imazapyr and imazapic herbicides in rice fields without crop rotation, has selected for resistant biotypes of Echinochloa crusgalli var. mitis. To know the mechanism of resistance involved becomes important in order to define effective management strategies. Therefore, the objective of this work was to verify if enhanced metabolism of herbicide is responsible for imazapyr and imazapic resistance in Echinochloa crusgalli var. mitis biotypes from Rio Grande (ECH38 resistant and ECH44 susceptible), Pelotas (ECH1 resistant and ECH14 susceptible) and Arroio Grande (ECH27 resistant) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. For this purpose, forty-nine biotypes were collected from the southern region of the state in areas with barnyard grass control difficulties with ALS inhibitor herbicides. The treatments of study consisted of application of malathion (1000 g a.i. ha-1) and piperonyl butoxide (525 g a.i. ha-1), inhibitors of the cytochrome P450 mono-oxygenase enzymes and after 60 minutes, preceding herbicide application (73.5 + 24.5 g a.e. ha-1. Visual control evaluations were taken at 14 and 28 days after treatments (DAT) and shoot dry mass (SDM) determination at 28 DAT. The results indicate that the application of inhibitors does not alter the control response of the ECH38, but shows a significant increase in phytotoxicity in 28 DAT, with values of 78% for the ECH1. The use of Malathion associated with the herbicide provided a reduction in the SDM of 1.34 g.plant-1 in relation to the isolated application of herbicide and for piperonyl butoxide (PBO) of 1.28 g.plant-1 for the resistant biotype from Pelotas. For ECH27, the SDM reduction was lower than the values of 0.87 g.plant-1 for Malathion and 1.04 g.plant-1 for PBO. The resistance mechanism to imazapyr + imazapic herbicide in Pelotas and Arroio Grande biotypes is related to increased metabolism of the herbicide, and it cannot be stated that this mechanism is involved in the resistance of the ECH38 biotype.

The continuous use of herbicides with the same mechanism of action has caused the selection of resistant weed biotype that may present differences in fitness when compared with susceptible biotype. The objective of the present study was to identify and distinguish the fitness of barnyardgrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to imazapyr + imazapic herbicide under controlled and noncompetitive conditions. For that, there were used barnyardgrass biotype susceptible (ECH1 and ECH38) and resistant (ECH14 and ECH44) to ALS inhibitors, collected at Pelotas/RS and Rio Grande/RS cities, respectively, in experiment installed in a greenhouse in a completely randomized experimental design during the months from October to December 2015. The biotype were evaluated during the period of 15 to 120 days after the emergence related to plant height, foliar area, shoot dry matter mass and root dry matter mass. The results showed insignificant differences between the biotypes during the development of the plants. The susceptible biotype ECH44 showed a higher number of panicles per plant and seeds along with the resistant ECH1. There is variability among Echinochloa crusgalli var. mitis biotypes resistant and susceptible to ALS inhibitors, indicating an absence in fitness penalty caused by resistance when cultivated without the selection of pressure (herbicide).

Hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis L.) is a major weed of the conventional crop systems. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to assess the responses of glyphosate-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) C. bonariensis at various developmental stages and evaluate the physiological potential of seeds to propose alternative herbicides for the control of this weed. Two experiments were performed in replicates. The first experiment was performed in a greenhouse, arranged in a 2 × 3 × 10 factorial design. Specifically, two hairy fleabane biotypes (S and R) at different developmental stages (I, II, and III) were subjected to various treatments (glyphosate, chlorimuron-ethyl, metsulfuron-methyl, diclosulam, ammonium glufosinate, paraquat, paraquat+diuron, diquat, 2,4-D, and control). Percentage control was evaluated at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after the application of the treatments (DAT), and shoot dry mass (SDM) was measured at 28 DAT. The second experiment was performed in a laboratory to evaluate the physiological potential of seeds based on the weight of 1000 seeds (TSW); shoot length (SL), radicle length (RL), total length (TL), fresh seedling mass (FSM), dry seedling mass (DSM), accelerated aging (AA) and cold test (CT), and germination (G) in response to cold and accelerated aging. The alternative herbicides tested effectively controlled biotype R up to the stage-I. Seeds of biotype R showed higher physiological potential in terms of all analyzed variables and exhibited greater tolerance to adverse conditions during seedling establishment. Therefore, strategies for the management of glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane should aim at preventing new seed production. A buva (Conyza bonariensis L.) é umas das principais plantas daninhas dos sistemas de cultivos conservacionistas, especialmente por sua evolução à resistência ao herbicida glyphosate. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram verificar a resposta de Conyza bonariensis suscetível (S) e resistente (R) ao glyphosate em diferentes estádios a herbicidas alternativos e avaliar o potencial fisiológico de sementes destes biótipos. Dois estudos foram realizados e repetidos, sendo o primeiro em casa de vegetação em esquema fatorial 2x3x10, sendo A: biótipos de buva (S e R); B: estádios de desenvolvimento (I (1-2 folhas), II (5-6 folhas) e III (30-35 folhas)) e C: herbicidas (glyphosate, chlorimuron-etílico, metsulfuron-methyl, diclosulam, amônio-glufosinato, paraquat, paraquat+diuron, diquat, 2,4-D além de testemunha não aplicada).O segundo estudo foi desenvolvido em laboratório, realizando-se avaliações do potencial fisiológico das sementes, a partir do por peso de mil sementes (PMS), germinação (G), primeira contagem da germinação (PG), índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e emergência (IVE), comprimento da parte aérea (CPA), raiz (CR) e total (CT), matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA), raízes (MSR) e total (MST), testes de frio e envelhecimento acelerado. O biótipo CR foi eficientemente controlado pelos herbicidas alternativos ao glyphosate, utilizados até o estádio de 6 folhas. As sementes do biótipo CR apresentaram desempenho fisiológico superior em todas as variáveis analisadas, com maior tolerância a condições adversas em seu estabelecimento. O manejo de buva resistente a glyphosate demanda a utilização de estratégias que visem evitar a produção de novas sementes.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of herbicides use in the control of tough lovegrass according to the availability of solar radiation and the presence or absence of flooded. Two experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 2x2x4 and 2x2x5 factorial scheme, where factor A was equivalent to the environment (natural or reduced radiation); factor B to water condition (with a 2 cm flooded or without); and, factor C the herbicides: cyhalofop butyl (315 g ha-1), glyphosate (1080 g ha-1), cyhalofop butyl + glyphosate (315 g ha-1 + 1080 g ha-1) and control (without application) in the first experiment. In the second experiment, the herbicides used were cyhalofop butyl (315 g ha-1), glyphosate (1080 g ha-1), sethoxydim (184g ha-1), imazethapyr (106 g ha-1) and control (without application). Glyphosate efficiently controls plants of tough lovegrass with four tillers (>90%), being superior to cyhalofop, imazethapyr and sethoxydim; independently, of resource conditions. Reduction in the availability of solar radiation generates less shoot dry mass production from the weed, and improves the control only by imazethapyr and cyhalofop. In general, a flooded condition does not affect tough lovegrass control by herbicides.Key words: flooded, glyphosate, pasture, shading, weed control. Manejo integrado de capim-annoni (Eragrostis plana Nees): associando ferramentas do controle quimico e fisiologia da planta RESUMO:O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficiencia de uso de herbicidas no controle de capim-annoni em funcao da disponibilidade de radiacao solar e da presenca ou ausencia de lâmina de agua. Para isso, foram conduzidos dois experimentos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2x2x4 e 2x2x5, em que o fator A equivaleu ao ambiente (radiacao natural ou reduzida); fator B a condicao hidrica (com lâmina d?agua de 2 cm ou sem); e, o fator C aos herbicidas: cyhalofop butyl (315 g ha-1), glyphosate (1080 g ha-1), cyhalofop butyl + glyphosate (315 g ha-1 + 1080 g ha-1) e testemunha (sem aplicacao) no primeiro experimento. No segundo experimento, os herbicidas utilizados foram: cyhalofop butyl (315 g ha-1), glyphosate (1080 g ha-1), sethoxydim (184 g ha-1), imazethapyr (106 g ha-1) e testemunha (sem aplicacao). Glyphosate controla eficientemente plantas de capim-annoni com quatro afilhos (>90%), sendo superior a cyhalofop butyl, imazethapyr e sethoxydim, independente das condicoes. A reducao da disponibilidade de radiacao solar gera menor producao de materia seca da parte aerea pelo capim-annoni, podendo inclusive, contribuir para maior eficiencia de controle somente por imazethapyr e cyhalofop. A temperatura média global pode aumentar de 0,3 a 4,8 oC até o final do século. Temperaturas supraótimas podem afetar as plantas em diferentes níveis organizacionais, causando alterações morfológicas, fisiológicas, bioquímicas e na expressão de genes, e plantas de arroz, arroz-vermelho e capim-arroz tendem a responder de forma distinta quando submetidas a temperaturas elevadas. Assim, os objetivos do estudo foram determinar as respostas fisiológicas e a expressão dos genes OsAPX2, OsHSP24.15 e OsHSP71.10 em arroz, arroz-vermelho e capim-arroz quando submetidos a temperaturas supraótimas. Para isso, foi conduzido experimento em casa de vegetação, utilizando delineamento completamente casualizado com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial. O fator A constou de duas temperaturas (25 oC e 40 oC) e o fator B, de três plantas [arroz (Oryza sativa cv. Puitá INTA-CL), arroz-vermelho (Oryza spp.) e capim-arroz (Echinochloa spp.)]. Em geral, a temperatura de 40 oC causa redução na fotossíntese, nas trocas gasosas e no teor de proteínas, além de aumento do estresse oxidativo nas plantas C3 testadas, sem efeito negativo sobre a planta C4 submetida a essa temperatura. Em resposta à alta temperatura, o arroz e arroz-vermelho aumentam a atividade das enzimas APX e SOD e a expressão dos genes OsAPX2, OsHSP24.15 e OsHSP71.10; no capim-arroz, apenas ocorreu aumento na expressão do gene HSP71.10. Supra-optimal temperatures can affect plants at different organizational levels, causing morphological, physiological, biochemical and gene expression alterations. Rice, weedy rice, and barnyardgrass may to response differently when subjected to supra-optimal temperatures. Thus, the aimed at determining the physiological response and expression of the genes APX2, HSP24.15 e HSP71.10 in rice, weedy rice, and barnyardgrass when in to supra-optimal temperatures. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in randomized complete desing with four repetitions, with a factorial combination of temperature x plantas, where: factor A consisted of two temperatures (25 oC and 40 oC); and factor B of three plants [rice (Oryza sativa cv. Puitá INTA-CL), weedy rice (Oryza spp.), and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa spp.)]. The 40 oC temperature, in general, caused a reduction in the photosynthesis parameters and in the protein content, and increased the oxidative stress in C3 plants; no damage was observed in the C4 plant subjected to this temperature. In response to the supra-optimal temperatures, rice and weedy rice increased of APX and SOD activity and the expression of OsAPX2, OsHSP24.15 and OsHSP71.10 genes. Barnyardgrass exposed to supra-optimal temperature do not modify the activity of its antioxidant system and increased the OsHSP71.10 gene expression. RESUMO A aveia-branca (Avena sativa) é uma importante alternativa para cultivos de inverno no sul do Brasil. Contudo, elevados percentuais de acamamento limitam sua produtividade. Nesse contexto, a utilização de reguladores de crescimento pode ser uma opção para evitar o acamamento e obter maior produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de doses do regulador de crescimento trinexapac-ethyl sobre as características agronômicas da aveia-branca, bem como sua influência na qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes. Um experimento foi conduzido em campo, onde foi avaliada a influência de quatro doses de trinexapac-ethyl (0, 50, 100 e 150 g i.a. ha-1) sobre a estatura de planta, o diâmetro de colmo, o percentual de acamamento e os componentes do rendimento. Um segundo experimento foi conduzido em laboratório, onde sementes provenientes do estudo em campo foram avaliadas quanto a qualidade fisiológica a partir da mensuração da germinação, primeira contagem da germinação, condutividade elétrica, comprimento e massa de plântulas, envelhecimento acelerado, teste de frio, índice de velocidade de germinação, índice de velocidade de emergência, massa seca de plântulas em campo e sanidade pelo método de Blotter Test. A utilização de doses crescentes de trinexapac-ethyl reduziu de forma quadrática a estatura, bem como o acamamento de plantas de aveia-branca. A dose de 100 g i.a ha-1 de regulador de crescimento proporcionou os melhores resultados para os componentes de produtividade em A. sativa. O uso do trinexapac-ethyl afeta negativamente a germinação e o vigor de sementes de aveiabranca, assim como a sua sanidade, reduzindo a capacidade de estabelecimento e desenvolvimento inicial da cultura.

Glyphosate is the herbicide most used worldwide. In cropping systems that rely on repeated applications of glyphosate or cultivate genetically modified soyabean crop, there are numerous cases of glyphosate resistant weeds, including Conyza bonariensis. Differences among competitive ability of Conyza spp. have been found. However, little information is available on the fitness costs related to glyphosate resistance in Conyza bonariensis. We evaluated growth, phenology, and seed viability of glyphosate-resistant (GR) and glyphosate-susceptible (GS) Conyza bonariensis from Brazil, in 2012 (fall/winter) and 2013 (spring/summer). When grown alone, in pots, C. bonariensis GR biotype developed more rapidly than the GS biotype, as evidenced by their earlier bolting, flowering, and seed set. In 2012, GR biotype showed 221.9 cm of plant height compared to 181.1 cm from GS, at the flowering time. In both years, the seed production per plant was superior for GR biotype, showing germination higher than 80% against 66.5% from the GS biotype. Thus, C. bonariensis GR biotype confirmed no fitness penalty also showing characteristics that allow us to infer in superior competitive with the absence of the herbicide. It is important to point out that the biotypes evaluated here have different genetic background and the differences between them may not be fully attributed to the resistance to glyphosate. However, the GR biotype can persist in the environment and outcompete with GS biotypes regardless of further glyphosate selection of pressure.

Spontaneous corn plants in soybean crop are considered weeds because they compete for the same environmental resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the competitive ability of soybean cultivars when in coexistence with spontaneous corn plants. A field experiment was conducted in CCGLTEC, Cruz Alta/RS, in 2014/15, in a split-plot design, with the main plot being composed of four different cultivars (CD 2694, BMX 7166, TEC 5718, TEC 6029) and the subplots of interference conditions (without the presence of corn volunteer plants, in the presence of corn until the V3, V6, V9 stages, or for the entire soybean cycle. Leaf area, shoot dry mass, plant height, chlorophyll index, and development stage were determined at 15, 30, and 49 DAE; we also determined apparent biological productivity, apparent harvest index, and components of productivity and grain yield. The cultivars showed losses in leaf area and shoot dry mass when in coexistence with corn (8 plants m-2) in the three periods evaluated. All cultivars showed losses in apparent biological productivity, apparent harvest index, and final grain yield when growing under competition throughout the cycle. Cultivars with a medium/long growth cycle, such as CD 2694 (maturity groups (GM): 6.9) and BMX 7166 (GM: 6.6), show a higher competitive ability up to V9 stage in contrast to cultivars with a short cycle, such as TEC 5718 (GM: 5.9) and TEC 6029 (GM: 5.7).

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da temperatura e da luz na germinação de sementes de capim-arroz, em diferentes períodos de armazenamento após a dispersão. O trabalho foi dividido em dois estudos: no primeiro avaliou-se o efeito de três temperaturas (15, 25 e 35 oC) e duas condições de luz (presença e ausência) na porcentagem de germinação, comprimento de hipocótilo e comprimento de radícula; e, no segundo, avaliouse o efeito de três temperaturas (15, 25 e 35 oC) no índice de velocidade de germinação e na velocidade de germinação. As sementes foram coletadas em campo logo após o início da dispersão natural. Os estudos foram conduzidos aos 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330 e 360 dias após a colheita das sementes. Aos 30 dias após a colheita não houve germinação, independentemente das condições de luz e temperatura. A partir de 60 dias após a colheita, as sementes germinaram tanto na presença quanto na ausência de luz. A ausência de luz promoveu o aumento no comprimento de hipocótilo, independentemente da temperatura. Sob condição de temperatura de 15 oC e ausência de luz, as sementes apresentaram maior comprimento de radícula. O incremento da temperatura proporcionou aumento no índice de velocidade de germinação e na velocidade de germinação das sementes. O entendimento dos fatores que afetam a germinação do capim-arroz contribui para o desenvolvimento de práticas de manejo cultural dessa importante espécie daninha que interfere em algumas culturas, incluindo a soja cultivada em rotação com o arroz irrigado. ABSTRACTThe objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of temperature and light on germination of barnyardgrass in different periods of seed storage after dispersal. The research was divided into two studies: in the first it was evaluated the effect of three temperatures (15, 25 and 35 °C) and two light conditions (presence and absence), on germination percentage, hypocotyl length and radicle length; and, in the second, it was evaluated the effect of three temperatures (15, 25 and 35 oC) on the germination speed index and germination speed. The seeds were collected in the field shortly after the start of natural seed dispersal. The studies were performed at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330 and 360 days after seed harvest. At 30 days after seed harvest, there was no germination regardless of light conditions and temperature. At 60 days after seed harvest, the seeds germinated both in the presence and absence of light. The absence of light increased hypocotyl length, regardless of temperature. Under 15 oC temperature condition and absence of light, the seeds showed higher radicle length. The increase in temperature caused an increase on the germination speed index and germination speed of the seeds. The knowledge of factors that affect barnyardgrass germination contribute to develop crop management practices of this important weed that interferes in some crops, including the soybean grown in rotation with rice paddy.

The resistance of weeds to herbicides is a consequence of one or more mechanisms in the plant, responsible for not allowing the herbicide to act properly at the active site. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism(s) of resistance to glyphosate in Conyza bonariensis. An experiment was conducted in November and December, 2012 and repeated in February and March, 2013 using a factorial arrangement of the treatments, where the factor A corresponded to biotypes of hairy fleabane, susceptible (S) and resistant (R); the factor B to seven rates of glyphosate from 0 to 11,520 g e.a. ha-1, and factor C were simulated environmental conditions of winter (12/8 oC day/night of temperature and 10/14 h of photoperiod) and summer (28/20 oC day/night of temperature and 14/10 h of photoperiod). An assay evaluating the shikimic acid was performed twice in the month of July 2013, with treatments arranged in a factorial arrangement, being factor A biotypes of hairy fleabane, S and R and the factor B seven glyphosate rates (0 to 28,8 mg a.e. L-1). The R biotype of C. bonariensis does not appear to present the sequestration of herbicide in the vacuole as the mechanism of resistance. However, the low accumulation of shikimate by the R biotype characterizes lower sensitivity of EPSPs enzyme to glyphosate, inferring that this is the present mechanism of resistance in plants of C. bonariensis. However, the resistance cannot be associated to a unique mechanism of resistance, requiring further studies to its understanding. RESUMO A resistência de plantas daninhas aos herbicidas é consequência da ocorrência de um ou mais mecanismos na planta, responsáveis por não deixarem o herbicida atuar de forma eficiente sobre o local de ação. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o(s) mecanismo(s) de resistência em Conyza bonariensis ao herbicida glyphosate. Um experimento foi conduzido de novembro a dezembro de 2012 e repetido em fevereiro e março de 2013, com arranjo fatorial, em que o fator A correspondeu aos biótipos de buva suscetível (S) e resistente (R); o fator B, a sete doses de glyphosate, que variaram de 0 a 11.520 g e.a. ha-1; e o fator C às condições que simularam o inverno (temperatura de 12/8 oC dia/noite e fotoperíodo de 10/14 horas) e verão (temperatura de 28/20 oC dia/noite e fotoperíodo de 14/10 horas). Um ensaio que avaliou o acúmulo de shiquimato foi realizado duas vezes no mês de julho de 2013, com tratamentos dispostos em esquema fatorial, sendo o fator A os biótipos de buva, S e R, e o fator B, sete doses de glyphosate (0 a 28,8 mg e.a. L-1). O biótipo R de C. bonariensis aparenta não apresentar o mecanismo de sequestro do herbicida no vacúolo como mecanismo de resistência. Entretanto, o menor acúmulo de shiquimato pelas plantas do biótipo R caracteriza a menor sensibilidade da enzima EPSPS ao glyphosate, inferindo que esse seja o mecanismo de resistência presente em plantas de C. bonariensis. Contudo, a resistência pode não estar atrelada a apenas um mecanismo de resistência, exigindo, para seu inteiro entendimento, estudos complementares.

The introduction of Clearfield® system for irrigated rice production provided an effective management strategy in the selective control of weeds. However, the selection pressure caused by the continuous use of herbicides such as imazapyr+imazapic belonging to the imidazolinone chemical group, without the proper integrated management of weeds, has favored the selection of resistant accessions. The goals of this work were to confirm the resistance to ALS inhibitors in accessions of E. crusgalli var. mitis collected in rice fields of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and to evaluate the control with alternative herbicides registered for weed control. Three experiments were conducted in a greenhouse using plant seeds that survived the application of the herbicide imazapyr+imazapic, collected in irrigated rice producing regions with suspected resistance escapes. For dose-response curve study, three resistant accessions (ECH1 - Pelotas/Rio Grande do Sul, ECH27 - Arroio Grande/Rio Grande do Sul and ECH38 - Rio Grande/Rio Grande do Sul) and two susceptible accessions (ECH14 - Pelotas/Rio Grande do Sul and ECH44 - Rio Grande / Rio Grande do Sul) (factor A) and 11 doses of the herbicide imazapyr+imazapic (factor B) were selected. The results indicate that barnyardgrass resistant accessions present a high resistance level to imazapyr+imazapic. ALS inhibiting herbicides such as imazethapyr+imazapic, bispyribac-sodium and penoxsulam did not control the resistant accessions either. Integrated weed management should be adopted and alternative mechanisms of action as ACCAse (cyhalofop-butyl, profoxydim and clethodim) and EPSPS (glyphosate) inhibitors are still eficients controlling barnyardgrass ALS resistant accessions.

A cultura do painço pelo seu rápido crescimento, tolerância a seca e ciclo curto, tem despertado atenção de produtores e técnicos como alternativa de rotação de cultura e formação de palhada para posterior semeadura da soja no sistema plantio direta em algumas regiões do Rio Grande do Sul. No entanto, são escassas as informações sobre a época de aplicação e doses de nitrogênio (N). Por isso, o objetivo desse trabalho, foi avaliar épocas de aplicação e doses de N na cultura do painço, sobre alguns parâmetros de planta e na produtividade final de grãos. O experimento foi desenvolvido na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Campus de Frederico Westphalen, no período de setembro a novembro de 2012. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, num esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com quatro repetições, sendo os tratamentos constituídos da combinação de quatro doses de N (0, 30, 60 e 90 kg ha-1) e quatro diferentes épocas de aplicação do N: todo na semeadura, 30% na semeadura e o restante 15 dias após a emergência (DAE),30% na semeadura e o restante 30 dias DAE, 30% na semeadura e o restante 45 dias DAE. Não houve resposta significativa quanto à época de aplicação de N na cultura do painço. Houve uma resposta significativa e linear na altura de planta, produção de matéria seca, diâmetro do colmo, comprimento da panícula e no rendimento final de grãos com o aumento nas doses de N. : Due to its rapid growth, drought tolerance and short cycle, the proso millet crop has attracted the attention of producers and technicians as an alternative to crop rotation and formation of straw for subsequent planting of soybean in no-tillage system in some regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. However, there is limited information on application times and rates of nitrogen (N). Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate application times and rates of N in proso millet crop, under some plant parameters and in the final grain yield. The experiment was conducted in the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, campus of Frederico Westphalen, in the period of September to November2012. The experiment design was that of randomized blocks, in a4 x 4factorial design, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of four rates of N (zero, 30, 60 and 90 kg ha-1) and four different application times of N: all at sowing, 30 % at sowing and the remaining15 days after emergence (DAE), 30 % at sowing and the remaining 30 days DAE, 30 % at sowing and the remaining45 days DAE. There was no significant response as regards the application times of Nin the proso millet crop. On the other hand, there was a significant and linear response in plant height, dry matter production, stem diameter, panicle length and in the final grain yield within crease in rates of N.

Cyperus iria (CYPIR) is one of the main weeds in irrigated rice crops. The intense chemical control with acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides favors the selection of cross-resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the crossresistance of CYPIR to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in irrigated rice in Rio Grande do Sul. Two experiments arranged in a factorial scheme, in a completely randomized design, with four replications were conducted. Experiment I consisted of resistant (CYPIR-R) and susceptible (CYPIR-S) biotypes and ALS-inhibiting herbicide doses: imazethapyr (106 g a.i. ha-1); pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (20 g a.i. ha-1); penoxsulam (36 g a.i. ha-1) and, as an alternative herbicide, bentazone (960 g a.i. ha-1); corresponding to 0; 1/16; 1/8; 1/4; 1/2; 1; 2; 4; 8 and 16x (x = maximum registered dose). Experiment II followed the same procedures, with doses of 0; 1/64; 1/32; 1/16; 1/8; 1/4; 1/2; 1 and 2x for CYPIR-S and 0; 1/2; 1; 2; 4; 8; 16; 32; 64 and 128x for CYPIR-R; including bispyribac-sodium (50 g a.i. ha-1). The variables evaluated were: visual control at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the treatments (DAT) and shoot dry matter (SDM) at 28 DAT. The results, fitted by nonlinear regression, show varied and high levels of cross-resistance of CYPIR-R to ALS-inhibiting herbicides from the group of imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, triazolopyrimidines and pyrimidinyl(thio)benzoates. Bentazone can be used as an alternative herbicide, however, not exclusively in the control of this biotype. RESUMO Cyperus iria (CYPIR) é uma das principais espécies daninhas em lavouras de arroz irrigado. O intenso controle químico com herbicidas de diferentes grupos dos inibidores da enzima acetolactato sintase (ALS) favorece a seleção de resistência cruzada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência cruzada de CYPIR aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS, em arroz irrigado, no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos arranjados em esquema fatorial, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. O experimento I constou de biótipos resistente (CYPIR-R) e suscetível (CYPIR-S) e doses de herbicidas inibidores da ALS: imazethapyr (106 g i.a. ha-1), pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (20 g i.a. ha 1), penoxsulam (36 g i.a. ha-1) e, como herbicida alternativo, bentazone (960 g i.a. ha-1), correspondendo a 0, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8 e 16x (x = dose máxima registrada). O experimento II seguiu os mesmos procedimentos, com doses de 0, 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 e 2x para CYPIR-S e 0, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 e 128x para CYPIRR, incluindo bispyribac-sodium (50 g i.a. ha-1). As variáveis avaliadas foram: controle visual aos 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após os tratamentos (DAT) e massa da parte aérea seca (MPAS) aos 28 DAT. Os resultados, ajustados por regressão não linear, comprovaram níveis variados e elevados de resistência cruzada de CYPIR-R aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS do grupo das imidazolinones, sulfonylureas, triazolopyrimidines e pyrimidinyl(thio)benzoates. O bentazone pode ser utilizado como herbicida alternativo, porém não de modo exclusivo, no controle desse biótipo.

Acetolactate synthase inhibitors are the main group of herbicides used in winter crops in Southern Brazil where their intensive use has selected for herbicide-resistant biotypes of radish. The resistance affects the efficacy of herbicides, and identifying the resistance mechanism involved is important for defining management strategies. The aim of this study was to elucidate the resistance mechanism of radish biotypes by quantifying the enzyme activity, ALS gene sequencing and evaluating the response of biotypes to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicide application after treatment with a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor. The susceptible (B1) and resistant (B4 and B13) biotypes were from wheat fields in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State. The results demonstrated that the enzyme affinity for the substrate (KM) was not affected in biotypes B4 and B13 but that the Vmax of the resistant biotypes was higher than that of biotype B1. The resistant biotypes showed no differential metabolic response to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicides when inhibited by malathion and piperonyl butoxide. However, gene sequencing of ALS showed a mutation at position 574, with an amino acid substitution of tryptophan for leucine (Trp-574-Leu) in resistant biotypes. RESUMO. Os inibidores da acetolactato sintase são o principal grupo de herbicidas usados em culturas de inverno do Sul do Brasil onde seu uso intenso selecionou biótipos resistentes de nabo. A resistência afeta a eficácia dos herbicidas, e a identificação do mecanismo de resistência envolvido é importante na definição de estratégias de manejo. O objetivo deste estudo foi elucidar o mecanismo de resistência em biótipos de nabo através da quantificação da atividade da enzima, sequenciamento do gene ALS e avaliar a resposta dos biótipos à aplicação do herbicida iodosulfurom e imazetapir após tratamento com inibidores do metabolismo da citocromo P450 monooxigenase. Os biótipos suscetível (B1) e resistentes (B4 e B13) eram de lavouras de trigo da região Noroeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os resultados demonstraram que a afinidade da enzima pelo substrato (KM) não foi afetada nos biótipos B4 e B13, porém o Vmax dos biótipos resistentes foi superior quando comparado ao biótipo B1. Os biótipos resistentes não apresentaram resposta metabólica diferencial ao herbicida iodosulfurom e imazetapir quando inibidos pelo malathion e butóxido de piperolina. Entranto, o sequenciamento do gene ALS evidenciou mutação na posição 574 com uma substituição do aminoácido triptofano por leucina (Trp-574-Leu) nos biótipos resistentes.

Chlorophylls and carotenoids are the main photosynthetic pigment in plants. In the weeds, the greatest amount of photosynthetic pigments can result in high competitiveness of the species. The aim of this study was to quantify the content of photosynthetic pigments in biotypes of fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) susceptible and resistant to glyphosate, by two different methods, as well as a correlation between chlorophyll content obtained by portable and classical methodology (extractable chlorophyll). An experiment was conducted in greenhouse and laboratory, 2 x 5 factorial scheme, where factor A was equivalent to biotypes of fleabane (resistant and susceptible to glyphosate) and factor B to developmental stages plants (rosette vegetative I, II and III and reproduction). At all stages of development, fleabane plants were evaluated with the portable determiner (chlorophyll content) and then the same leaves were subjected to classical methodology laboratory (extractable pigments). The resistant biotype of fleabane showed higher contents of chlorophyll a, b, and total carotenoids, inferring a greater competitive potential regarding the susceptible population to the herbicide. The portable determiner of chlorophyll showed high correlation with the classical method of determination of photosynthetic pigments, and can thus be used to accurately assess this, saving time and reagents. Clorofilas e carotenoides são os principais pigmentos fotossintéticos em plantas. Nas plantas daninhas, a maior quantidade de pigmentos fotossintéticos pode resultar em elevada competividade da espécie. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o teor de pigmentos fotossintéticos em biótipos de buva (Conyza bonariensis) suscetível e resistente ao herbicida glyphosate, por dois diferentes métodos, bem como estabelecer uma correlação entre o índice de clorofila obtido pelo equipamento portátil e a metodologia clássica (clorofila extraível). Um experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação e laboratório, em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, em que o fator A equivaleu aos biótipos de buva (resistente e suscetível a glyphosate) e o fator B, a estádios de desenvolvimento das plantas (roseta, vegetativo I, II e III, e reprodutivo). Em todos os estádios de desenvolvimento, as plantas de buva foram avaliadas com o determinador portatil (índice de clorofila); em seguida, as mesmas folhas foram submetidas à metodologia clássica de laboratório (pigmentos extraíveis). O biótipo de buva resistente apresentou maiores teores de clorofila a, b, total e carotenoides, demonstrando maior potencial competitivo frente ao biótipo suscetível ao herbicida glyphosate. O determinador portátil de clorofila apresentou alta correlação com o método clássico de determinação de pigmentos fotossintéticos, podendo, assim, ser usado com precisão na avaliação destes, proporcionando economia de tempo e reagentes.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the competitiveness between soybean cultivars and barnyardgrass, based on morphological and physiological characteristics of species. The experiments were conducted in completely randomized experimental design, with 4 replications. In the first study, for both soybean and barnyardgrass, it was determined the population of plants in which shoot dry matter became constant and independent of the population (16 plants∙pot−1 or 400 plants∙m−2). In the second study, 2 experiments were conducted to evaluate the competitiveness of BMX Apolo RR and BMX Potência RR soybean cultivars with barnyardgrass plants, both carried out in replacement series under different proportions of plants∙pot−1 (100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75 and 0:100) between the crop and the weed. The analysis of the species competitiveness was determined through diagrams applied to replacement series experiments and use of relative competitiveness indexes. At 44 days after the emergence of species, the physiological and morphological parameters of the crop and the weed were evaluated. The BMX Apolo RR and BMX Potência RR soybean cultivars show similar competitiveness when competing with the barnyardgrass; therefore, the ability of one species to interfere on another is equivalent. For plant height, barnyardgrass displays higher competitiveness compared to BMX Apolo RR, with early cycle and short height. The intraspecific competition is more important to barnyardgrass than interspecific competition with soybean cultivars, resulting in negative effects on the morphological and physiological characteristics of species.

Cyperus iria L. (CYPIR) é uma das principais ciperáceas ocorrentes em lavouras de arroz irrigado. Durante muitos anos, os herbicidas inibidores da enzima acetolactato sintase (ALS) foram a principal ferramenta para controle de CYPIR, favorecendo a seleção de biótipos com resistência cruzada. Com base no nível de resistência, é necessária a adoção de medidas de controle químico alternativo a fim de evitar a evolução da resistência e reduzir a interferência sobre a cultura. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar alternativas de controle químico de CYPIR com resistência cruzada aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS, ocorrente em lavouras de arroz irrigado no Sul do Brasil. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os herbicidas utilizados foram: imazethapyr; formulação de imazapyr+imazapic; bentazon; propanil; formulação de bentazon+imazamox; mistura de (bentazone + imazamox) + (imazapyr + imazapic); associação de bentazone + formulação de (imazapyr + imazapic); glyphosate; e testemunha sem herbicida. A avaliação do controle foi realizada em biótipo resistente (CYPIR-R) e suscetível (CYPIR-S), e a fitotoxicidade avaliada nas cultivares Guri Inta CL, IRGA 424 RI e IRGA 409. Aos 28 dias após aplicação (DAA) foi avaliado o controle/ fitotoxicidade e a matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA). Todos os tratamentos testados, com exceção do imazethapyr e formulação de imazapyr+imazapic isolados, foram eficientes. Há alternativas para o controle químico de Cyperus iria resistente aos inibidores da ALS e esses, quando associados com produtos que apresentam mecanismo de ação diferentes, não inviabilizam o uso da tecnologia ClearField®.

A antecipação da colheita da soja é possível com uso da prática de dessecação pré-colheita, a qual reduz o tempo de permanência das sementes no campo, após a maturação fisiológica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da época de aplicação do herbicida paraquat, como dessecante na pré-colheita da soja, sobre a produtividade e qualidade fisiológica de sementes. O trabalho constou de duas etapas: um experimento em campo, conduzido no município de Jaboticaba-RS, safra 2010/2011, e uma análise da qualidade fisiológica das sementes. Os tratamentos consistiram de três épocas de aplicação do paraquat (240 g i.a. ha‑1), R6, R7.1 e R7.3, bem como de um tratamento testemunha (sem dessecação). Foram avaliados a produtividade de grãos e os componentes da produtividade. A análise da qualidade das sementes foi conduzida no Laboratório de Produção e Tecnologia de Sementes da UFSM, Campus de Frederico Westphalen, RS, onde se realizaram os seguintes testes: germinação; primeira contagem de germinação, comprimento de parte aérea e radicular, matéria seca de plântulas, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, emergência em campo e índice de velocidade de emergência. A aplicação de paraquat como dessecante na pré‑colheita da soja, nos estádios R6 e R7.1, provoca queda acentuada na produtividade da cultura. A dessecação sem perda de potencial produtivo da soja só é viável a partir do estádio R7.3. Sementes oriundas de plantas com dessecação nos estádios R6 e R7.1 apresentam percentual superior e maior velocidade de germinação. Entretanto, sementes de plantas com dessecação no estádio R6 possuem menor vigor de plântulas.

Alterações na qualidade da radiação luminosa causadas pela presença de "plantas vizinhas" podem desencadear uma série de respostas morfológicas das espécies de interesse. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do crescimento de plântulas de trigo, azevém (Lolium multiflorum) e nabo (Raphanus sativus), em competição nos estádios iniciais de desenvolvimento. Foram realizados três experimentos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. No primeiro experimento, avaliou-se o crescimento do trigo (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) em competição com azevém, nabo ou trigo (cv. BRS Guamirim). No segundo, a espécie estudada foi o azevém sob competição com plantas de trigo (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) e nabo e, no terceiro, o nabo em competição inicial com plantas de trigo (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) e azevém. Em todos os experimentos, foi adicionado tratamento em que a planta principal cresceu livre da interferência inicial. Aos 15 dias após a semeadura, as plantas foram submetidas às avaliações de estatura de planta, comprimento do sistema radicular, diâmetro de caule e contagem do número de raízes emitidas. A estatura de planta do trigo foi 36% maior quando cultivado em competição com o azevém. O azevém apresentou incremento de 172% na MSPA quando competindo com o nabo, em comparação à testemunha sem competidores. Conclui-se que a competição inicial com base na radiação luminosa, uma vez que não houve limitação de água e nutrientes, altera as características morfofisiológicas de plântulas de trigo cv. Fundacep Cristalino, azevém e nabo, independentemente da espécie competidora em questão. Alterations in the quality of light radiation caused by the presence of "neighbor plants" can trigger a series of morphology results of species in focus. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the growth of wheat, Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and radish (Raphanus sativus) seedlings, in competition at the initial stages of development. Three experiments were conducted in greenhouse, in a complete randomized block design, with four replications. On the first experiment, wheat growth (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) was assessed in competition with Italian ryegrass, radish or wheat (cv. BRS Guamirim). On the second, the species studied was Italian ryegrass under competition with wheat plants (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) and radish and on the third one, radish with initial competition with wheat plants (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) and Italian ryegrass. In all experiments, an additional treatment where the main plant growths free of initial interference was included. At 15 days after seeding, plants were submitted to evaluation of plant height, root system length, stem diameter and the number of developed roots was recorded. Plant height of wheat (cv. Fundacep Cristalino) was 36% higher when cultivated in competition with Italian ryegrass. Italian ryegrass showed an increase of 172% in MSPA when competing with radish when compared to untreated check without competitors. It was concluded that initial competition based on the light radiation, once there was no limitation of water and nutrients, affect the morphophisiological characteristics of wheat (cv. Fundacep Cristalino), Italian ryegrass and radish seedlings, regardless of the competitor species in focus.

The establishment of commercial crops in succession to winter cover crops that leaves a dense straw layer provides significantly suppression of weeds. The objective of this work was to evaluate the suppressive potential of winter cover crops on weed infestation in maize and its effect on the yield of the maize sown in succession. The experiment was conducted in the 2012/2013 crop season, in an area of the UFSM Campus Frederico Westphalen, State of Rio Grande do Sul. Four different species of cover crops (black oat, ryegrass, vetch and forage radish) were seeded and a fallow area was used as control. Evaluations to quantify the dry matter and chemical desiccation were performed at the full flowering period of the cover crops. Maize was sown in no-tillage system, in succession to the cover crops. The incidence and shoot dry matter of weeds (g 0.25 m-2) was evaluated 15 days after the maize emergence. The main weed species in the area were: morning-glory (Ipomoea grandifolia), wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus). In general, vetch and ryegrass were the winter cover crops that better suppressed the weeds evaluated. The best maize yield was found in the area previously covered with ryegrass, inferring a relation between the cover crop and suppression of weeds and crop yield. RESUMO O estabelecimento de culturas comerciais em sucessão a coberturas de inverno, com presença de densa camada de palha, proporciona significativa supressão de plantas daninhas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial supressor de coberturas de inverno sobre a incidência inicial de plantas daninhas na cultura do milho e seu efeito na produtividade da cultura semeada em sucessão. Um experimento foi conduzido no ano agrícola de 2012/2013, em área experimental da UFSM, Campus de Frederico Westphalen RS. Foram utilizadas quatro diferentes espécies de cobertura de inverno (aveia-preta, azevém, ervilhaca e nabo) semeadas em faixas, além da testemunha mantida em pousio. No pleno florescimento das coberturas foi realizada a quantificação da massa seca e a dessecação das mesmas. O milho foi semeado em sistema de plantio direto em sucessão às coberturas. Aos 15 dias após a emergência do milho foi avaliada a incidência e a massa seca de parte aérea das plantas daninhas presentes (0,25 m²). As principais espécies daninhas presentes na área foram: corriola (Ipomoea grandifolia), leiteiro (Euphorbia heterophylla), milhã (Digitaria sanguinalis), tiririca (Cyperus rotundus). De forma geral, a ervilhaca e o azevém foram as coberturas de inverno com maior capacidade supressora sobre as plantas daninhas avaliadas. O melhor desempenho produtivo do milho foi observado sobre a palhada de azévem, inferindo para uma relação de supressão de plantas daninhas e produtividade da cultura.

O objetivo do trabalho foi determinar a influência de herbicidas pré-emergentes na comunidade da fauna edáfica em sistema de plantio convencional de cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso num fatorial (6x3), sendo seis formas de controle de plantas daninhas (T1: pousio; T2: capina manual; T3: Tebuthiuron a 1200gia.ha-1; T4: Ametryne a 3000gia.ha-1; T5: Tebuthiuron a 1000gia.ha-1 + Ametryne a 1500gia.ha-1; T6: Tebuthiuron a 1200gia.ha-1 + Ametryne a 3000gia.ha-1) e três tempos de avaliação (0, 40, 80 dias após a aplicação dos herbicidas: DAA). Avaliou-se: abundância, grupos, riqueza de Margalef, uniformidade de Pielou, dominância de Simpson, diversidade de Shannon, colêmbolos e biomassa seca acima do solo. Não houve diferença nos tratamentos para a riqueza de Margalef, uniformidade de Pielou, dominância de Simpson e diversidade de Shannon. A abundância foi maior aos 80 DAA no tratamento capina manual. Os herbicidas testados não alteraram a diversidade da fauna do solo até 80 DAA. O herbicida Tebuthiuron não afetou a população de colêmbolos, quando utilizado isolado ou associado com o Ametryne. O uso do herbicida Ametryne a 3000gia.ha-1 reduziu a população de colêmbolos em relação ao pousio e capina manual.

O uso contínuo de herbicidas inibidores da ALS tem levado à evolução de plantas daninhas resistentes mundialmente. Picão-preto é uma das mais importantes plantas daninhas no sistema de produção de soja no Brasil. Recentemente, foi identificado um biótipo de picao-preto resistente (R) aos inibidores da ALS devido à mutação Trp574Leu no gene ALS. Também, foram comparadas características adaptativas entre biótipos de picao-preto suscetível (S) e R aos inibidores da ALS. Especificamente, os objetivos deste trabalho foram: (1) avaliar e comparar o crescimento relativo (RGR) entre os biótipos; (2) analisar características da germinação das sementes dos biótipos R e S sob diferentes condições de temperatura; e (3) avaliar suas habilidades competitivas em um estudo em série de substituição. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na University of Arkansas, EUA, em 2007 e na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, em 2008. Para os estudos de série de substituição as proporções de plantas dos biótipos foram, respectivamente: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100, com uma população total de 150 plantas m-2. Não se verificou diferença no RGR entre os biótipos R e S. A taxa de germinação do biótipo R foi menor que a do biótipo S. Porém, sob baixas condições de temperatura (15 oC), foi observada a situação oposta. Greater beggarticks is one of the most troublesome weeds found in the soybean production system in Brazil. Recently, a greater beggarticks biotype that is resistant (R) to ALS inhibitors due to Trp574Leu mutation in the ALS gene was identified. Also, the adaptive traits between susceptible (S) and R to ALS inhibitors biotypes of greater beggarticks were compared. Specifically, we aimed to: (1) evaluate and compare the relative growth rates (RGR) between the biotypes; (2) analyze the seed germination characteristics of R and S biotypes under different temperature conditions; and (3) evaluate their competitive ability in a replacement series study. The experiments were conducted at the University of Arkansas, USA, in 2007 and at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), Brazil, in 2008. Plant proportions for replacement series studies were respectively 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, with a total population of 150 plants m-2. There was no difference in RGR between R and S biotypes. The R-biotype germination rate was lower than that of the S biotype. However, at low temperature conditions (15 oC), the reverse was observed. O uso combinado de cultivar competitivo e de arranjo equidistante de plantas pode incrementar a habilidade competitiva das culturas com plantas daninhas. Conduziram-se dois experimentos em campo na Estação Experimental Agronômica da UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul-RS, durante o ano agrícola 2001/02, com o objetivo de caracterizar a contribuição do cultivar e do espaçamento entre fileiras para a competitividade da soja com plantas concorrentes. No experimento 1, testaram-se condições de competição (ausência ou presença do cultivar de soja Fundacep 33, simulando planta daninha), espaçamentos entre fileiras (25 e 50 cm) e seis cultivares de soja reagentes. No experimento 2, compararam-se condições de competição (ausência ou presença de plantas daninhas dicotiledôneas), espaçamentos entre fileiras (25 e 50 cm) e cultivares de soja (IAS 5 e Fepagro RS 10). O cultivar Fepagro RS 10 apresenta características de planta que o destacam quanto à habilidade em competir com plantas daninhas, como plantas mais altas, com mais matéria seca, com maior razão de massa foliar e que proporcionam maior cobertura do solo, além de figurar entre os cultivares mais produtivos. O espaçamento reduzido entre fileiras proporciona cobertura precoce do solo pela soja, reduz a população e a matéria seca das plantas daninhas e mantém ou incrementa a produtividade de grãos de soja. The use of a soybean cultivar with competitive ability combined with an equidistant plant population distribution can enhance the competitive ability of crops against weeds. Two field experiments were carried out at the Agronomic Experimental Station of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Eldorado do Sul-RS, during the 2001/2002 growing season, aiming to characterize the contribution of the cultivar and row spacing to soybean competitiveness against weeds. Experiment 1 tested the competitive conditions expressed by the presence or absence of the soybean cultivar FUNDACEP 33 simulating the weed, row spacing (25 and 50 cm) and six reacting soybean cultivars. Experiment 2 tested the competitiveness conditions expressed by the presence or absence of dicotyledonous weeds, row spacing (25 and 50 cm) and soybean cultivars (IAS 5 and FEPAGRO RS 10). Besides ranking among the best producing cultivars, FEPAGRO RS 10 shows characteristics of a plant able to compete with weeds, especially taller weeds with higher dry matter and foliar mass ratio, providing a better soil coverage. Reduced row spacing allows earlier soybean soil coverage, decreases weed population and dry matter, and maintains or increases soybean grain yield.

Summary Weeds resistant (R) to herbicides are widespread worldwide. Bidens subalternans is one of the most troublesome weeds in conventional soyabean fields in Brazil, and in a crop rotation system of cotton/soyabean and maize/soyabean some populations had evolved resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Bidens subalternans plants suspected of resistance were observed in soyabean fields where the main ALS-inhibiting herbicide sprayed is chlorimuron-ethyl. To confirm and characterise the resistance of B. subalternans to ALS inhibitors, whole-plant bioassays were conducted in 2006 and 2008. ALS in vivo enzyme bioassays were also conducted in 2007. In both bioassays, the R biotype showed cross-resistance to four chemical families of ALS-inhibiting herbicides. According to whole-plant level tests the R biotype showed 498-, 797-, 726- and >877-fold resistance to chlorimuron-ethyl, imazethapyr, cloransulam-methyl and pyrithiobac-sodium herbicides respectively. The R biotype was also 17-, 166-, 436- and 516-fold R to chlorimuron-ethyl, imazethapyr, cloransulam-methyl and pyrithiobac-sodium herbicides, respectively, based on the enzyme assay. Therefore, the herbicide-R B. subalternans can no longer be controlled by any ALS-inhibitor herbicides. Integrated control methods involving alternative herbicide with different modes of action are needed, to avoid yield losses in conventional soyabean fields in Brazil that are infested by ALS-R B. subalternans populations.

Soybean is a major crop cultivated in Brazil, and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides are widely used to control weeds in this crop. The continuous use of these ALS-inhibiting herbicides has led to the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds worldwide. Greater beggarticks is a polyploid species and one of the most troublesome weeds in soybean production since the discovery of ALS-resistant biotypes in 1996. To confirm and characterize the resistance of greater beggarticks to ALS inhibitors, whole-plant bioassays and enzyme experiments were conducted. To investigate the molecular basis of resistance in greater beggarticks theALSgene was sequenced and compared between susceptible and resistant biotypes. Our results confirmed that greater beggarticks is resistant to ALS inhibitors and also indicated it possesses at least three isoforms of theALSgene. Analysis of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences among the isoforms and between the biotypes indicated that a single point mutation, G–T, in oneALSisoform from the resistant biotype resulted in an amino acid substitution, Trp574Leu. Two additional substitutions were observed, Phe116Leu and Phe149Ser, in a second isoform of the resistant biotype, which were not yet reported in any other herbicide-resistantALSgene; thus, their role in conferring herbicide resistance is not yet ascertained. This is the first report ofALSmutations in an important, herbicide-resistant weed species from Brazil.

O uso intenso de glyphosate em sistemas de produção de frutíferas e soja - em especial no sistema de semeadura direta da soja - favoreceu a seleção de biótipos resistentes ao glyphosate em Conyza bonariensis e C. canadensis (buva). Estudos da biologia destas espécies subsidiariam a proposição de estratégias visando o seu manejo integrado. Um programa de pesquisa foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar como a germinação das duas espécies foi influenciada pelas populações, composição do substrato de semeadura, profundidade da semente no perfil do substrato, temperatura e luz. Num primeiro experimento, os tratamentos foram organizados em esquema fatorial, em que o fator A consistiu das populações (duas de cada espécie), o fator B foi atribuído à composição do substrato (terra, areia e terra:areia) e o fator C foram as profundidades no perfil do substrato (0, 0,5, 1, 2 e 5 cm). No segundo experimento, foram testados o fator A; o fator B, que foi a temperatura (constante de 20, 25 ou 30 ºC, e alternada: 20/30 ºC); e o fator C, a condição luminosa (luz, escuro). No terceiro experimento, os fatores consistiram de espécies e temperatura (10, 15, 20, 25 e 30 ºC). Avaliaram-se a emergência de plântulas ou a germinação de sementes aos 12 dias após a instalação do experimento. De acordo com os resultados, chegou-se às seguintes conclusões: todos os biótipos das duas espécies tiveram emergência semelhante em relação ao perfil do solo; o aumento da profundidade da semente no perfil do solo reduziu a emergência de plântulas; o substrato arenoso favoreceu a germinação de sementes posicionadas a 0,5 e a 1,0 cm de profundidade; as duas espécies são fotoblásticas positivas; a temperatura ótima para germinação das espécies foi de 20 ºC, mas C. canadensis apresentou germinação melhor em temperaturas inferiores à ótima e C. bonariensis germinou melhor em temperaturas superiores a esta. Intense glyphosate use either in orchards or specially no-tilled glyphosate-resistant soybeans, has selected resistant biotypes of both Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis. Studies of the species biology could provide insight for integrated weed management. A research program was designed to evaluate how seed germination of both species was affected by the following factors: biotype, substrate composition, soil depth, temperature and light. A factorial arrangement of the treatments was established for the first experiment, where factor A consisted of biotypes (two from each species); factor B was substrate composition (soil, sand, soil: sand); and factor C was substrate depths (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 cm). The second experiment included the first factor; plus factor B as temperature (constant 20, 25, or 30 ºC, and alternating 20/30 ºC), and factor C as light conditions (light, dark). In a third experiment, factors consisted of species and temperature (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 ºC). Seedling emergence or seed germination were assessed at 12 daysafter treatments. All biotypes from both species had similar seedling emergencein relation to soil depth. Increasing soil depth reduced seedling emergence. Sandy substrate facilitated seed germination at 0.5 and 1.0 cm depth. The species are positive photoblastic. Optimum temperature for seedgermination for both specieswas 20ºC,butC. canadensis germinates betterattemperatures below the optimum and C. bonariensisgerminates better at temperatures above the optimum.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o grau de similaridade genética entre acessos de picão-preto, suscetíveis e resistentes aos herbicidas inibidores da enzima acetolactato sintase (ALS) e a relação entre similaridade genética e distância geográfica desses acessos. Sementes dos acessos foram coletadas no Estado do Paraná e cultivadas em casa de vegetação, na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, em outubro de 2004. Depois da confirmação da resistência ou suscetibilidade dos acessos aos inibidores da enzima ALS, realizou-se a extração de DNA. Por meio da técnica de RAPD, foi possível avaliar a similaridade genética entre os acessos de picão-preto. Na análise conjunta dos acessos, dos 20 iniciadores utilizados, 17 apresentaram-se polimórficos, amplificando um total de 94 bandas. A similaridade genética média foi baixa e equivalente a 37%. A análise de regressão evidenciou que não há relação entre distância genética e geográfica nos acessos de picão-preto avaliados. A baixa similaridade geral entre esses acessos evidencia que a resistência aos herbicidas na região se configura pela seleção de indivíduos resistentes preexistentes na população. The objective of this work was to evaluate the degree of genetic similarity among beggar-ticks accesses, susceptible and resistant to acetolactate sintase (ALS) herbicide inhibitors and the relationship among the genetic similarity and geographic distance of this accesses. Beggar-ticks seeds were sampled at Paraná state and were grown in the greenhouse at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, in October 2004. After the confirmation of resistance or susceptibility to ALS inhibitors herbicides, the DNA extraction was performed. Through RAPD analysis, it was possible to evaluate the genetic similarity among beggar-ticks accesses. In the whole analysis of the accesses, from 20 primers assessed, only 17 displayed polymorphism and amplified a total of 94 bands. Average genetic similarity was low (37%). Regression analysis evidenced that there is no relationship between genetic and geographic distance for the beggar-ticks accesses. Low general similarity among accesses evidences that resistance in the region is represented by selection of resistant individuals already existing in the population.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar as habilidades competitivas relativas de plantas de soja e de genótipos competidores por meio do arranjo em série de substituição. Foram realizados seis experimentos na UFRGS, em Porto Alegre-RS, em 2001 e 2002. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de cinco proporções de plantas de soja e do genótipo competidor: 100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75 e 0:100. A soja foi representada pelos cultivares "IAS 5" e "Fepagro RS 10" e os competidores por nabo ou pelo cultivar de soja "Fundacep 33". Os tratamentos foram dispostos em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. A análise da competitividade foi efetuada por meio de diagramas aplicáveis ao arranjo de substituição e interpretação de índices de competitividade. Constatou-se que a proporção entre plantas de soja e de nabo alterou a relação de competição entre essas espécies, mas que a proporção entre plantas de soja de diferentes cultivares não modificou tal relacionamento. O nabo foi mais competitivo que os genótipos de soja "IAS 5" e "Fepagro RS 10", enquanto a competitividade de "Fundacep 33" equivaleu-se à desses cultivares. The objective of this study was to compare the competitive abilities of soybean plants with those of competitor genotypes through the design of replacement series. There were performed six experiments at UFRGS, in Porto Alegre - RS, in 2001 and 2002. The treatments tested were five proportions of plants among soybean and competitor genotypes: 100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75; and 0:100. Soybean was represented by the cultivars 'IAS 5' and 'Fepagro RS 10', and the competitors by forage radish or by the soybean cultivar 'Fundacep 33'. The treatments were arranged in a completely random experimental design, with four replications. The competitivity analysis was accomplished through diagrams applicable to the substitutive design and interpretation of competitive indexes. It was proved that the proportion among soybean plants and forage radish plants changed the competition relation among these species, but that the proportion among soybean plants from different cultivars did not altered such relationship. Radish was more competitive than the soybean cultivars 'IAS 5' and 'Fepagro RS 10', whereas the competitivity of 'Fundacep 33' genotype was equivalent to these cultivars.
