Abstract: ThomX is a compact x-ray source based on Compton scattering, installed at IJCLab (Laboratoire de physique des 2 infinis-Irène Joliot-Curie) in Orsay. The machine uses a small electron storage ring and an intense laser pulse stored in a high-finesse optical cavity. This article describes the various subsystems of the machine and their initial results of the commissioning, which began in mid-2021. This first commissioning phase led to the production of 10^{10} x-rays/s with an on-axis energy of 45 keV. The main steps to be taken to reach the nominal flux are outlined at the end.

Abstract: The Gamma Factory proof of principle experiment aims at colliding laser pulses with ultrarelativistic partially stripped ion beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Its goals include the first demonstration of fast cooling of ultrarelativistic ion beams and opening up many possibilities for new physics measurements in various domains from atomic physics to particle physics. A high average-power, pulsed laser system delivering approximately 200 kW needs to be implemented for this aim. This is possible thanks to state-of-the-art optical systems that recently demonstrated similar performances in the laboratory environment. Challenges lie in the implementation of this kind of laser system in the harsh environment of hadronic machines including their robust and fully remote operation. The design of this laser system, involving a high quality factor enhancement cavity, is drawn and described in this article. Mitigation procedures are proposed to overcome limitations imposed by the occurrence of degenerate high-order mode at high average power in such optical resonators. We show that the operation at average power above 200 kW is feasible.

Abstract: ThomX is a new generation Compact Compton Source. It is currently commissioned by and at the IJCLab (Laboratoire de physique des 2 infinis - Irène Joliot-Curie (UMR9012)) at Orsay. The first beam is expected at the begining of 2021. The aim of ThomX is to demonstrate the characteristics of an intense and Compact (lab-size) X-ray source based on Compton Scattering. The performances are mostly driven by the laser optical system which is above the state of the art of stored laser power. Proof of principle of various X-ray techniques will be performed thanks to the versatile ThomX beamline. Firstly, this article presents the machine description. Secondly, the issues and limits of the laser system are discussed. Then, the ThomX beamline is described and the machine status conclude the ThomX presentation. Finally, the expected performances for the next years and the possible experiments that can be made with this new machine are detailed.

4. Towards ultimate bandwidth photon sources based on Compton backscattering: Design constraints due to nonlinear effects

Abstract: Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments typically require high rates of monochromatic photons due to the narrow linewidth of these resonances. Inverse Compton scattering sources are used to perform these experiments. Their intrinsic excellent monochromaticity is however spoiled by a variety of unavoidable imperfections related to the electron and laser beams. Some projects aim at reaching one per-mille of energy bandwidth, which requires attaining excellent brilliance of the electron beam but also a careful optimization of the laser-beam parameters. In particular, in such a situation, a careful accounting for the nonlinearities induced by a relatively large laser energy has to be considered. In this article, we revisit these nonlinearities with a quantum viewpoint with the goal to provide analytical expressions that can be employed for a very fast optimization of the performance of the source. These expressions were benchmarked against the CAIN event generator with an excellent accuracy in the parameters hypervolume that is of interest in this context. We also show that previously published expression often used to include laser nonlinearities in analytical bandwidth expressions significantly depart from the detailed CAIN simulations. The obtained expression are further used to optimize designs similar to those considered in on-going projects.

Abstract: We report on the optical commissioning of the high power laser beam circulator for the high brightness Compton γ-ray source Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics. Tests aiming at demonstrating the optical performances of the laser beam circulator have been realized with a low-power pulsed laser-beam system and without electron beam. We show that, with the developed alignment and synchronization methods coming from the laser beam circulator design study presented in the Dupraz et al. paper [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 17, 033501 (2014)], the laser beam circulator enhances the laser-beam power available at the interaction point by a factor in excess of 25. This corresponds to a potential of bringing the average laser-beam power in excess of 1 kW when the laser beam circulator is injected with the interaction point laser-beam pulse energy of 400 mJ at 100 Hz.

6. Optimization of a Fabry-Perot cavity operated in burst mode for Compton scattering experiments

Abstract: Formal and experimental studies of Fabry-Perot cavities operating in burst mode are conducted in the context of Compton scattering. A dedicated optimization procedure for their use in this context is described for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Provided that the number of bunches in the electron-beam train and their time separation are known, the parameters related to the optical system are chosen to maximize the ratio of the total intracavity laser-beam energy used for collisions to the total input laser beam seeded into the cavity operated in burst mode. A good qualitative agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental data. It is shown by studying the upgrade of an existing machine, STAR. Here a new optical system with increased performance without a large increase in complexity is obtained. This result paves the way towards future designs of high-flux, high-quality, low cost and compact x-ray facilities based on Compton scattering.

7. Luminosity optimization schemes in Compton experiments based on Fabry-Perot optical resonators

Abstract: The luminosity of Compton x-ray and γ sources depends on the average current in electron bunches, the energy of the laser pulses, and the geometry of the particle bunch to laser pulse collisions. To obtain high power photon pulses, these can be stacked in a passive optical resonator (Fabry-Perot cavity) especially when a high average flux is required. But, in this case, owing to the presence of the optical cavity mirrors, the electron bunches have to collide at an angle with the laser pulses with a consequent luminosity decrease. In this article a crab-crossing scheme is proposed for Compton sources, based on a laser amplified in a Fabry-Perot resonator, to eliminate the luminosity losses given by the crossing angle, taking into account that in laser-electron collisions only the electron bunches can be tilted at the collision point. We report the analytical study on the crab-crossing scheme for Compton gamma sources. The analytical expression for the total yield of photons generated in Compton sources with the crab-crossing scheme of collision is derived. The optimal collision angle of the bunch was found to be equal to half of the collision angle. At this crabbing angle, the maximal yield of scattered off laser photons is attained thanks to the maximization, in the collision process, of the time spent by the laser pulse in the electron bunch. Estimations for some Compton source projects are presented. Furthermore, some schemes of the optical cavities configuration are analyzed and the luminosity calculated. As illustrated, the four-mirror two- or three-dimensional scheme is the most appropriate for Compton sources.

Abstract: International audience; L’immensité de notre Univers ne cesse d’intriguer et de stimuler les imaginations.Pour mieux appréhender l’infiniment grand et l’histoire de l’Univers depuis ses tout premiers instants, il faut se tourner vers un autre infini, l’infiniment petit, et ses quarks, leptons et bosons, à la base du modèle standard de la physique des particules. En les étudiant, on cherche à percer le secret de l’organisation de la matière à la plus petite échelle. Sans l’infiniment petit, on ne peut décrire ni le Big Bang, ni le comportement des grandes structures stellaires, ni la naissance de la matière. Abstract: The measurement of the jet cross sections by the H1 collaboration had been compared to various predictions including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations which are corrected in this erratum for an implementation error in one of the components of the NNLO calculations. The jet data and the other predictions remain unchanged. Eight figures, one table and conclusions are adapted accordingly, exhibiting even better agreement between the corrected NNLO predictions and the jet data.

Abstract: Charged particle multiplicity distributions in positron-proton deep inelastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s}=319$$ s = 319 GeV are measured. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 pb$$^{-1}$$ - 1 . Charged particle multiplicities are measured as a function of photon virtuality $$Q^2$$ Q 2 , inelasticity y and pseudorapidity $$\eta $$ η in the laboratory and the hadronic centre-of-mass frames. Predictions from different Monte Carlo models are compared to the data. The first and second moments of the multiplicity distributions are determined and the KNO scaling behaviour is investigated. The multiplicity distributions as a function of $$Q^2$$ Q 2 and the Bjorken variable $$x_{\mathrm{bj}}$$ x bj are converted to the hadron entropy $$S_{\mathrm{hadron}}$$ S hadron , and predictions from a quantum entanglement model are tested.

Abstract: International audience; Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments typically require high rates of monochromatic photons due to the narrow linewidth of these resonances. Inverse Compton scattering sources are used to perform these experiments. Their intrinsic excellent monochromaticity is however spoiled by a variety of unavoidable imperfections related to the electron and laser beams. Some projects aim at reaching one per-mille of energy bandwidth, which requires attaining excellent brilliance of the electron beam but also a careful optimization of the laser-beam parameters. In particular, in such a situation, a careful accounting for the nonlinearities induced by a relatively large laser energy has to be considered. In this article, we revisit these nonlinearities with a quantum viewpoint with the goal to provide analytical expressions that can be employed for a very fast optimization of the performance of the source. These expressions were benchmarked against the CAIN event generator with an excellent accuracy in the parameters hypervolume that is of interest in this context. We also show that previously published expression often used to include laser nonlinearities in analytical bandwidth expressions significantly depart from the detailed CAIN simulations. The obtained expression are further used to optimize designs similar to those considered in on-going projects.

Abstract: Exclusive photoproduction of $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) mesons is studied using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. A sample of about 900,000 events is used to measure single- and double-differential cross sections for the reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}Y$$ γ p → π + π - Y . Reactions where the proton stays intact ($${{{m_Y}} {=}m_p}$$ m Y = m p ) are statistically separated from those where the proton dissociates to a low-mass hadronic system ($$m_p{ m p < m Y < 10 GeV ). The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the invariant mass $$m_{\pi \pi }$$ m π π of the decay pions and the squared 4-momentum transfer t at the proton vertex. The measurements are presented in various bins of the photon–proton collision energy $${{W_{\gamma p}}} $$ W γ p . The phase space restrictions are $$0.5\le m_{\pi \pi } \le 2.2~{{\text {GeV}}} $$ 0.5 ≤ m π π ≤ 2.2 GeV , $$\vert t\vert \le 1.5~{{\text {GeV}^2}} $$ | t | ≤ 1.5 GeV 2 , and $$20 \le W_{\gamma p} \le 80~{{\text {GeV}}} $$ 20 ≤ W γ p ≤ 80 GeV . Cross section measurements are presented for both elastic and proton-dissociative scattering. The observed cross section dependencies are described by analytic functions. Parametrising the $${m_{\pi \pi }}$$ m π π dependence with resonant and non-resonant contributions added at the amplitude level leads to a measurement of the $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) meson mass and width at $$m_\rho = 770.8{}^{+2.6}_{-2.7}~({\text {tot.}})~{{\text {MeV}}} $$ m ρ = 770.8 - 2.7 + 2.6 ( tot. ) MeV and $$\Gamma _\rho = 151.3 {}^{+2.7}_{-3.6}~({\text {tot.}})~{{\text {MeV}}} $$ Γ ρ = 151.3 - 3.6 + 2.7 ( tot. ) MeV , respectively. The model is used to extract the $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) contribution to the $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ π + π - cross sections and measure it as a function of t and $${W_{\gamma p}}$$ W γ p . In a Regge asymptotic limit in which one Regge trajectory $$\alpha (t)$$ α ( t ) dominates, the intercept $$\alpha (t{=}0) = 1.0654\ {}^{+0.0098}_{-0.0067}~({\text {tot.}})$$ α ( t = 0 ) = 1.0654 - 0.0067 + 0.0098 ( tot. ) and the slope $$\alpha ^\prime (t{=}0) = 0.233 {}^{+0.067 }_{-0.074 }~({\text {tot.}}) ~{{\text {GeV}^{-2}}} $$ α ′ ( t = 0 ) = 0.233 - 0.074 + 0.067 ( tot. ) GeV - 2 of the t dependence are extracted for the case $$m_Y{=}m_p$$ m Y = m p .

Abstract: International audience; An experimental method to remove modal instabilities induced by thermoelastic deformation in optical high-finesse resonators is presented and experimentally investigated in this paper. The method is found suitable for multi-mirror folded monolithic and compact cavities, such as those used in the particle accelerator environment. It is also suitable for very high stacked average power. Here we demonstrate stable operation at the 200 kW intracavity average power.

Abstract: An observation of prior-damage behavior inside a high-finesse optical resonator is reported. Intra-cavity average power drops appeared with magnitude and time scale depending on the power level. Increasing further the incident laser beam power led to irreversible damage of the cavity coupling mirror surface. The origin of this phenomenon is investigated with post mortem mirror surface imaging and analysis of the signals reflected and transmitted by the enhancement cavity. Scattering losses induced by surface deformation due to a hot-spot surface contaminant is found to be most likely the dominant physics process behind this phenomenon.

Abstract: International audience; Linearly polarized Gaussian beams, under the slowly varying envelope approximation, tightly focused by a perfect parabola modeled with the integral formalism of Ignatovsky are found to be well approximated with a generalized Lax series expansion beyond the paraxial approximation. This allows obtaining simple analytic formulas of the electromagnetic field in both the direct and momentum spaces. It significantly reduces computing time, especially when dealing with the problem of simulating direct laser acceleration. The series expansion formulation depends on integration constants that are linked to boundary conditions. They are found to depend significantly on the region of space over which the integral formulation is fit. Consequently, the net acceleration of electrons initially at rest is extremely sensitive to the chosen set of initial parameters due to the extreme focusing investigated here. This suggests avoiding too tight focusing schemes in order to obtain reliable predictions when the process of interest is sensitive mainly to the field and not the intensity.

Abstract: We discuss the possibility of creating novel research tools by producing and storing highly relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in the CERN accelerator complex, and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom with lasers to produce high-energy photon beams. Intensity of such photon beams would be by several orders of magnitude higher than offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interesting gamma-ray energy domain of 0.1-400 MeV. In this energy range, the high-intensity photon beams can be used to produce secondary beams of polarised electrons, polarised positrons, polarised muons, neutrinos, neutrons and radioactive ions. Abstract: For the first time, a diamond sensor was operated for the characterisation of a high average-intensity gamma-ray beam. Data was collected for gamma beam energies between 2 and 7 MeV, at the HIγS facility of TUNL. The nanosecond-fast resolution of diamond detectors is exploited to distinguish bunches of gamma rays 16.8 ns apart. It allows a precise direct determination of the time-structure of the gamma beam. The strong potential of such a detector for precise absolute flux, position and polarisation measurements is exposed. It is thus shown that diamond detectors are a decisive and unique tool for the detailed characterisation of upcoming gamma sources, such as ELI-NP and HIγS-2.

Abstract: International audience; A new method of laser frequency stabilization using polarization property of an optical cavity is proposed. In a standard Fabry–Perot cavity, the coating layers thickness of cavity mirrors is calculated to obtain the same phase shift for sand p-wave but a slight detuning from the nominal thickness can produce sand p-wave phase detuning. As a result, each wave accumulates a different round-trip phase shift and resonates at a different frequency. Using this polarization property, an error signal is generated by a simple setup consisting of a quarter wave-plate rotated at 45°, a polarizing beam splitter and two photodiodes. This method exhibits similar error signal as the Pound–Drever–Hall technique but without need for any frequency modulation. Lock theory and experimental results are presented in this paper. &

Abstract: Gamma ray sources with high flux and spectral densities are the main requirements for new nuclear physics experiments to be performed in several worldwide laboratories with dedicated facilities. The paper is focalized on a proposal of experiment on $\gamma $ photons production using Compton collisions between the ${\rm DA}\Phi {\rm NE}$ electron beam and a high average power laser pulse, amplified in a Fabry-Perot optical resonator. The calculations show that the resulting $\gamma $ beam source has extremely interesting properties in terms of spectral density, energy spread and $\gamma $ flux comparable (and even better) with the last generation $\gamma $ sources. The energy of the $\gamma $ beam depends on the adopted laser wavelength and can be tuned changing the energy of the electron ring. In particular we have analyzed the case of a $\gamma $ factory tunable in the 2-9 MeV range. The main parameters of this new facility are presented and the perturbation on the transverse and longitudinal electron beam dynamics is discussed. A preliminary accelerator layout to allow experiments with the $\gamma $ beam is presented with a first design of the accelerator optics.

Abstract: The need of a fs-scale pulsed, high repetition rate, X-ray source for time-resolved fine analysis of matter (spectroscopy and photon scattering) in the linear response regime is addressed by the conceptual design of a facility called MariX (Multi-disciplinary Advanced Research Infrastructure for the generation and application of X-rays) outperforming current X-ray sources for the declared scope. MariX is based on the original design of a two-pass two-way superconducting linear electron accelerator , equipped with an arc compressor, to be operated in CW mode (1 MHz). MariX provides FEL emission in the range 0.2–8 keV with 1 0 8 photons per pulse ideally suited for photoelectric effect and inelastic X-ray scattering experiments. The accelerator complex includes an early stage that supports an advanced inverse Compton source of very high-flux hard X-rays of energies up to 180 keV that is well adapted for large area radiological imaging, realizing a broad science programme and serving a multidisciplinary user community, covering fundamental science of matter and application to life sciences, including health at preclinical and clinical level.

Abstract: We report on the optical commissioning of the high power laser beam circulator (LBC) for the high brightness Compton {\gamma}-ray source Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics. Tests aiming at demonstrating the optical performances of the LBC have been realized with a low-power pulsed laser-beam system and without electron beam. We show that, with the developed alignment and synchronization methods coming from the LBC design study presented in the Dupraz et al. paper [1], the LBC enhances the laser-beam power available at the interaction point (IP) by a factor in excess of 25. Abstract: International audience; A method to derive the ABCD matrices for reflection and refraction for any diopter under arbitrary incident angle is developed. The result is benchmarked on a commercial software for an optical system compound of two cylindrical lenses. It is used to simulate the general astigmatism and calculate the resulting Orbital Angular Momentum of a laser beam that propagate through a pair of cylindrical lenses. It more generally useful to ease and simplify such kind of simulations in any optical system by avoiding use of complicated commercial softwares.

Abstract: The parameters of the electroweak theory are determined in a combined electroweak and QCD analysis using all deep-inelastic $e^+p$ and $e^-p$ neutral current and charged current scattering cross sections published by the H1 Collaboration, including data with longitudinally polarised lepton beams. Various fits to Standard Model parameters in the on-shell scheme are performed. The mass of the W boson is determined as $m_W=80.520\pm 0.115~\mathrm {GeV} $ . The axial-vector and vector couplings of the light quarks to the Z boson are also determined. Both results improve the precision of previous H1 determinations based on HERA-I data by about a factor of two. Possible scale dependence of the weak coupling parameters in both neutral and charged current interactions beyond the Standard Model is also studied. All results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

Abstract: International audience; Formal and experimental studies of Fabry-Perot cavities operating in burst mode are conducted in the context of Compton scattering. A dedicated optimization procedure for their use in this context is described for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Provided that the number of bunches in the electron-beam train and their time separation are known, the parameters related to the optical system are chosen to maximize the ratio of the total intracavity laser-beam energy used for collisions to the total input laser beam seeded into the cavity operated in burst mode. A good qualitative agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental data. It is shown by studying the upgrade of an existing machine, STAR. Here a new optical system with increased performance without a large increase in complexity is obtained. This result paves the way towards future designs of high-flux, high-quality, low cost and compact x-ray facilities based on Compton scattering.

Abstract: Nonparaxial perturbative equations are derived from the scalar wave equation by taking into account spatiotemporal couplings. General solutions are obtained in Fourier space and further transformed back in direct space. They depend on parameters that can be used to match various boundary conditions and the perturbative expansion of any nonparaxial exact solutions. This parametrization is used to study the sensitivity of direct electron acceleration off an ultrashort tightly focused laser pulse to nonparaxial corrections of radially polarized electromagnetic fields.

Abstract: ThomX is a compact Compton based X-ray source under construction at LAL in Orsay (France). The ThomX facility is composed of a 50-70 MeV linac, a transfer line and an 18 meters long storage ring. Compton scattering between 50 MeV, 1 nC electron bunches and 10 mJ laser pulses stacked in a Fabry-Perot cavity results in the production of photons with energies up to 90 keV with a maximum flux of 1013 photons per second. The ThomX building is close to be finished. The installation of the accelerator will start in 2018, followed by the optical table and the Fabry-Perot cavity.

Abstract: Non-paraxial perturbation wave equations are solved for general astigmatic Gaussian beams for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in the angular spectrum representation by taking into account generic boundary conditions. Expressions for second-order corrections are derived and exemplified with an optical cavity made of two cylindrical mirrors. Non-paraxial corrections can lead, depending on the choice of boundary conditions, to a transverse S-shaped beam mode, which has been qualitatively been observed in a highly divergent non-planar four-mirror cavity.

36. Non-paraxial corrections and the effect of spatio-temporal couplings on laser-driven electron acceleration

Abstract: Highly-focused TM01 laser-beams are of great interest for the production of femtosecond electron bunches, and even attosecond X-rays. However the final electron beam energy and its quality, quantified by the energy spread and the emittance, highly depend on the actual transverse and longitudinal shape of the laser beam which in turn depends on the boundary conditions. Numerous solutions of the wave equation already exist, including elegant closed form expressions, but all of them correspond to a particular choice of boundary conditions. Based on these solutions several studies of the acceleration of electrons with a TM01 beam have been performed but none of them addresses in detail the difficult question of the robustness of the predictions against a small deviation of the boundary conditions with respect to the expectation, which generally occur in any tight optical focusing system. We present a simple and so far unique way to derive the fields of a TM01 beam in a systematic way with limited restriction on the boundary conditions. For the first time we extend the Lax' perturbative solution to spatiotemporal couplings which are sizable for femtosecond pulses. Those boundary conditions emerge in the form of easily tunable coefficients. It is shown that a large number of closed-form solutions found in the literature match our generic derivation of the fields. It is thus a practical tool to study the effect of a small deviation of the boundary condition on the acceleration of electrons with tightly focused laser-beams. Such effects are investigated and presented for the first time. They are studied in an extensive way by means of simulations and are shown to have a very large effect on the acceleration process.

Abstract: Inverse Compton Scattering provides a unique way to produce quasi-monochromatic X-rays via the interaction of relativistic electrons with a laser pulse. This process has the advantage of producing a very high flux of X-rays with energies above a few tens of keV for a modest electron beam energy. In addition the output beam divergence is much larger than in classical synchrotron light sources and the X-ray beam is thus easier to manipulate. We present an X-ray source under construction at Paris-Sud University, ThomX. This source has a small footprint of 70m2 compared to synchrotron light sources and uses a 50MeV electron beam that collides at 16.7MHz with a few picosecond pulsed laser beam which power is enhanced at the state of the art. In the nominal design the enhanced average laser-beam power is 600kW and X-rays between 30 and 50 keV are produced with a flux of 1013 photons per second. This energy range as well as the energy-angular dependence due to the Compton back-scattering process are suitable for societal applications like radiotherapy or art history. We use a prototype cavity to perform R&D for the ThomX source. Various diagnostics like real time finesse measurements or active coupling enhancement are under study on this test cavity to increase the achievable stored power. We will present the ongoing developments along with the results we obtained. A very high finesse optical cavity (F > 28000) is used, which is one of the highest finesse cavities in pulsed regime. The numerous challenges and solutions to mitigate the related issues will be presented.

Abstract: Signals of QCD instanton-induced processes are searched for in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering at the electron-proton collider HERA in the kinematic region defined by the Bjorken-scaling variable $x > 10^{-3}$, the inelasticity $0.2< y < 0.7$ and the photon virtuality $150 < Q^2 < 15000$ GeV$^2$. The search is performed using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~$351$ pb$^{-1}$. No evidence for the production of QCD instanton-induced events is observed. Upper limits on the cross section for instanton-induced processes between $1.5$~pb and $6$~pb, at $95\%$~ confidence level, are obtained depending on the kinematic domain in which instantons could be produced. Compared to earlier publications, the limits are improved by an order of magnitude and for the first time are challenging theory predictions.

Available online 7 June 2016; International audience; Operations of a diamond sensor placed in a high average-intensity beam of photons with energies of a few MeV are reported. Data was taken at the HIγS facility of TUNL in parasitic mode while nuclear-physics experiments were taking place. The energies of the photons during data taking were 2, 3 and 7 MeV with circular and linear polarisations of the photon beam. The collected charge appears to be constant at these energies, which is consistent with simulations. A dedicated run with bunches of photons separated by 16 ns shows that they are unambiguously distinguished. This is possible thanks to a FWHM of the pulses measured to be about 6 ns. The results indicate that the tested apparatus fulfils the requirements for a fast monitoring detector for the ELI-NP source currently under construction, which motivates this work, and demonstrates for the first time the capabilities of such detectors in high average-intensity photon beams.

Abstract: We report the generation of 10 μJ, ultrashort 97 fs pulses at 1 MHz by implementing a two-arm spectral coherent combining scheme in a fiber chirped-pulse amplifier (FCPA), allowing both gain-narrowing mitigation and large stretching ratio for energy extraction. Such architecture is able to support the amplification of large-bandwidth (>15 nm) together with high gain factor (>30 dB), allowing the generation of ultrashort sub-100 fs pulses at the output of a FCPA for the first time.

Abstract: A measurement of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma*p --> gamma p using e(+) p and e(-) p collision data recorded with the HI detector at HERA is presented. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 306 pb(-1), almost equally shared between both beam charges. The cross section is measured as a function of the virtuality Q(2) of the exchanged photon and the centre-of-mass energy W of the gamma*p system in the kinematic domain 6.5 < Q(2) < 80 GeV2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and |t| < 1 GeV2, where t denotes the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The cross section is determined differentially in t for different Q(2) and W values and exponential t-slope parameters are derived. Using e(+) p and e(-) p data samples, a beam charge asymmetry is extracted for the first time in the low Biorken x kinematic domain. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. Experimental results are discussed in the context of two different models, one based on generalised parton distributions and one based on the dipole approach. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Inclusive non-diffractive photoproduction of rho(770)(0), K*(892)(0) and phi(1020) mesons is investigated with the H1 detector in ep collisions at HERA. The corresponding average gamma p centre-of-mass energy is 210 GeV. The mesons are measured in the transverse momentum range 0.5 < p(T) < 7 GeV and the rapidity range vertical bar y(lab)vertical bar < 1. Abstract: The first measurement of diffractive scattering of quasi-real photons with large momentum transfer γ p → γ Y, where Y is the proton dissociative system, is made using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed for initial photon virtualities Q 2 < 0.01 GeV 2. Abstract: A first measurement is presented of exclusive photoproduction of $$\rho ^0$$ mesons associated with leading neutrons at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=319$$ GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.16 pb $$^{-1}$$ . The $$\rho ^0$$ mesons with transverse momenta $$p_T0.35$$ , are detected in the Forward Neutron Calorimeter. The phase space of the measurement is defined by the photon virtuality $$Q^2 < 2$$ GeV $$^2$$ , the total energy of the photon–proton system $$20 < W_{\gamma p}< 100$$ GeV and the polar angle of the leading neutron $$\theta _n < 0.75$$ mrad. The cross section of the reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ is measured as a function of several variables. The data are interpreted in terms of a double peripheral process, involving pion exchange at the proton vertex followed by elastic photoproduction of a $$\rho ^0$$ meson on the virtual pion. In the framework of one-pion-exchange dominance the elastic cross section of photon-pion scattering, $$\sigma ^\mathrm{el}(\gamma \pi ^+ \rightarrow \rho ^0\pi ^+)$$ , is extracted. The value of this cross section indicates significant absorptive corrections for the exclusive reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ .

Abstract: We report and discuss high-flux generation of circularly polarized γ-rays by means of Compton scattering. The γ-ray beam results from the collision of an external-cavity-enhanced infrared laser beam and a low emittance relativistic electron beam. By operating a non-planar bow-tie high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot cavity coupled to a storage ring, we have recorded a flux of up to (3.5 ± 0.3) × 108 photons per second with a mean measured energy of 24 MeV. The γ-ray flux has been sustained for several hours. In particular, we were able to measure a record value of up to 400 γ-rays per collision in a full bandwidth. Moreover, the impact of Compton scattering on the electron beam dynamics could be observed resulting in a reduction of the electron beam lifetime correlated to the laser power stored in the Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate that the electron beam lifetime provides an independent and consistent determination of the γ-ray flux. Furthermore, a reduction of the γ-ray flux due to intrabeam scattering has clearly been identified. These results, obtained on an accelerator test facility, warrant potential scaling and revealed both expected and yet unobserved effects. They set the baseline for further scaling of the future Compton sources under development around the world.

Abstract: Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q^2>150 GeV^2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2 and of the transverse energy E_T of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of alpha_s(M_Z) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1193+/-0.0014(exp.)^{+0.0047}_{-0.0030}(th.)+/-0.0016(pdf).

Abstract: A combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current $e^{\pm}p$ scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb$^{-1}$ and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, $Q^2$, and Bjorken $x$. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. In addition to the experimental uncertainties, model and parameterisation uncertainties were assessed for these parton distribution functions. Variants of HERAPDF2.0 with an alternative gluon parameterisation, HERAPDF2.0AG, and using fixed-flavour-number schemes, HERAPDF2.0FF, are presented. The analysis was extended by including HERA data on charm and jet production, resulting in the variant HERAPDF2.0Jets. The inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous determination of these parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible, resulting in $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1183 \pm 0.0009 {\rm(exp)} \pm 0.0005{\rm (model/parameterisation)} \pm 0.0012{\rm (hadronisation)} ^{+0.0037}_{-0.0030}{\rm (scale)}$. An extraction of $xF_3^{\gamma Z}$ and results on electroweak unification and scaling violations are also presented.

Abstract: H1 and ZEUS have published single-differential cross sections for inclusive D ∗±-meson production in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA from their respective final data sets. These cross sections are combined in the common visible phase-space region of photon virtuality Q 2 > 5 GeV2, electron inelasticity 0.02 < y < 0.7 and the D ∗± meson’s transverse momentum p T(D ∗) > 1.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D ∗)| < 1.5. The combination procedure takes into account all correlations, yielding significantly reduced experimental uncertainties. Double-differential cross sections d2 σ/dQ 2dy are combined with earlier D ∗± data, extending the kinematic range down to Q 2 > 1.5 GeV2. Abstract: Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.
