We present WearMoCap, an open-source library to track the human pose from smartwatch sensor data and leveraging pose predictions for ubiquitous robot control. WearMoCap operates in three modes: 1) a Watch Only mode, which uses a smartwatch only, 2) a novel Upper Arm mode, which utilizes the smartphone strapped onto the upper arm and 3) a Pocket mode, which determines body orientation from a smartphone in any pocket. We evaluate all modes on large-scale datasets consisting of recordings from up to 8 human subjects using a range of consumer-grade devices. Further, we discuss real-robot applications of underlying works and evaluate WearMoCap in handover and teleoperation tasks, resulting in performances that are within 2 cm of the accuracy of the gold-standard motion capture system. Our Upper Arm mode provides the most accurate wrist position estimates with a Root Mean Squared prediction error of 6.79 cm. To evaluate WearMoCap in more scenarios and investigate strategies to mitigate sensor drift, we publish the WearMoCap system with thorough documentation as open source. Abstract The initial delivery of small‐scale magnetic devices such as microrobots is a key, but often overlooked, aspect for their use in clinical applications. The deployment of these devices within the dynamic environment of the human body presents significant challenges due to their dispersion caused by circulatory flows. Here, a method is introduced to effectively deliver a swarm of magnetic nanoparticles in fluidic flows. This approach integrates a magnetically navigated robotic microcatheter equipped with a reservoir for storing the magnetic nanoparticles. The microfluidic flow within the reservoir facilitates the injection of magnetic nanoparticles into the fluid stream, and a magnetic field gradient guides the swarm through the oscillatory flow to a target site. The microcatheter and reservoir are engineered to enable magnetic steering and injection of the magnetic nanoparticles. To demonstrate this approach, experiments are conducted utilizing a spinal cord phantom simulating intrathecal catheter delivery for applications in the central nervous system. These results demonstrate that the proposed microcatheter successfully concentrates nanoparticles near the desired location through the precise manipulation of magnetic field gradients, offering a promising solution for the controlled deployment of untethered magnetic micro‐/nanodevices within the complex physiological circulatory systems of the human body.

Dysfunctional labour (DL) is a major cause of maternal and neonatal deaths worldwide. The only clinically available drug is oxytocin which is about 50% effective. Therefore, the development of new effective drugs for DL is a necessity. The medicinal plant Brachystegia eurycoma Harms (synonym B. spiceaformis) is used for labour management in ethnomedicine. In the search for new lead compounds for DL therapy, the stem bark of B. eurycoma was subjected to bioactivity-guided fractionation procedures to elucidate its uterine-modulating activities and active compounds. B. eurycoma stem bark extract (BE) was fractionated via vacuum liquid chromatographic techniques. The fractionation process was guided by ex vivo uterine contractility assays on the mouse uterus, performed using spontaneous, oxytocin, and high KCl-induced contractility assays. Furthermore, the characterization of the chemical constituents was performed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). BE produced dual effects on uterine contractility which was dependent on the reconstitution period. The freshly prepared crude extract (BEF) inhibited uterine contractility (IC50 amplitude = 0.8 ± 0.1 mg/ml; IC50 frequency = 1.4 ± 0.2 mg/ml). However, contractility was augmented when the reconstituted extract was stored for 24 h and beyond (BES) (EC50 amplitude = 0.2 ± 1.2 mg/ml; EC50 frequency = 0.91 ± 1.2 mg/ml). In addition, the compounds caffeine, genistein, and prunetin were identified from the potent BE fractions via the different spectroscopic and spectrometric tools. This study demonstrated a storage-dependent dual effect of BE where BEF induced inhibition and BES augmented uterine contractility. Findings from this study also suggest that caffeine and phytoestrogens contributed to the uterine-modulating activities of BE. Thus, further investigation of these compounds in combination and as separate lead compounds is required for DL therapeutic management.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the recovery rate of the left ventricular systolic function of women diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy receiving specialized care in rural Tanzania. Methods In this observational study, women diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy at a referral center in rural Tanzania between December 2015 and September 2021 were included. Women diagnosed between February and September 2021 were followed prospectively, those diagnosed between December 2015 and January 2021 were tracked back for a follow-up echocardiography. All participants received a clinical examination, a comprehensive echocardiogram, and a prescription of guideline-directed medical therapy. The primary outcome was recovery of the left ventricular systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction > 50%). Results Median age of the 110 participants was 28.5 years (range 17–45). At enrolment, 49 (45%) participants were already on cardiac medication, 50 (45%) had severe eccentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle, and the median left ventricular ejection fraction was 30% (range 15–46). After a median follow-up of 8.98 months (IQR 5.72–29.37), 61 (55%) participants were still on cardiac medication. Full recovery of the left ventricular systolic function was diagnosed in 76 (69%, 95% CI 59.6–77.6%) participants. In the multivariate analysis, a higher left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline was positively associated with full recovery (each 5% increase; OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.10–2.62, p = 0.012), while higher age was inversely associated (each 10 years increase; OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.19–0.82, p = 0.012). Conclusion Left ventricular systolic function recovered completely in 69% of study participants with peripartum cardiomyopathy from rural Tanzania under specialized care.

Más de 2000 millones de personas en el mundo padecen “hambre oculta” por insuficiencia de minerales y/o vitaminas en la dieta diaria. La situación del hambre en Perú pasó de 17.7 a 19.6 puntos de 2021 a 2022. La biofortificación de cultivos surgió como una iniciativa para ayudar a solucionar este problema mediante la producción de plantas con mayor contenido de zinc (Zn), hierro (Fe) y provitamina A (ProA) en el grano utilizando métodos de mejoramiento convencional (no transgénicos). Los resultados obtenidos en el Perú nos muestran que existen híbridos de maíz biofortificado, con alto contenido de Zn y ProA, y con muy buen potencial de rendimiento. Para el caso del maíz morado, con alto contenido de antocianinas, un fitoquímico que tiene efectos beneficiosos para la salud de las personas, se está estudiando la adaptación de las variedades en todo el país tanto para el rendimiento del grano como para el contenido de antocianinas. Resultados preliminares indican que hay claras diferencias entre variedades para rendimiento y contenido de antocianina en la coronta, brácteas y grano. La producción de maíz morado se ha cuadruplicado en los últimos 20 años por un mayor consumo interno y por el incremento en las exportaciones. Sin embargo, su contribución al Producto Bruto Interno (PBI) es muy baja: menor al 1 %; lo que es un reto y una oportunidad para desarrollar y transferir tecnología que incremente la producción y vincule al productor de maíz morado con el consumidor. En el caso de maíz de alta calidad de proteína (QPM), se ha liberado en el Perú un híbrido simple (QPM) de color amarillo intenso, con alto potencial de rendimiento y amplia adaptación.

We present a dataset of 264 annotated piano pieces of nine composers, composed in the long 19th century (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7483349). Annotations adhere to the DCML harmony annotation standard and include Roman numerals, phrase boundaries, and cadence types. The scores are encoded in the XML-based MuseScore 3 format. Annotations are embedded within the MuseScore files. In addition, all harmony information, alongside key features of the encoded measure and note objects, is provided in the form of plaintext TSV-formatted tables for increased interoperability with other datasets and analysis tools. Annotations were collaboratively created and reviewed by a pool of trained music theorists. Collaboration took place asynchronously online via a semi-automated GitHub-based workflow designed for quality assurance, allowing cycles of revisions and reviews until consensus is reached. The full revision history is retained, providing data for further empirical research on inter-annotator agreement and related topics. We also present descriptive statistics about the nine corpora and the dataset as a whole, including comparisons of pitch-class contents, phrase lengths, modulations, and cadence types. We conclude with a discussion of our musicological principles for corpus building and considerations of representability.

BackgroundThe Biofire® FilmArray® Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) PCR panel covers 14 viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens and has been implemented in many institutions worldwide. Post-marketing studies indicate a reduced sensitivity and overutilization underscoring the need for a more targeted usage. The aim of our study is to describe the utilization of the ME panel and to develop a diagnostic-stewardship based decision rule.MaterialsAdult patients, who underwent CSF analysis with the ME panel between August 2016 and June 2021 at the University Hospital Basel, were included. Demographic, clinical, microbiological, and laboratory data were extracted from the electronic health record. Factors associated with a positive ME panel result were identified, and a decision rule was developed to potentially optimize the diagnostic yield and reduce the number of unnecessary tests.Results1,236 adult patients received at least one panel in the observed period, of whom 106 panels tested positive (8.6%). The most frequently observed pathogens were Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV, 27%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (19%), Enterovirus (16%), Herpes simplex Virus 1/2 (16%), and Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6, 13%). Fever, vomiting, headache, and photophobia were more frequently present in test positive patients as were significantly higher CSF leukocytes and protein concentrations. When simulating a decision rule based on CSF leukocytes and protein concentration, only 35% of all patients would have qualified for a ME panel tests, thereby increasing the positivity rate to 22.7%. 10 of 106 positive ME panels would have been missed, only involving HHV-6 and VZV (6 and 4 cases, respectively). As these subjects were either severely immunocompromised or had clinical features of shingles we propose extending the testing algorithm by including those criteria.ConclusionThe ME panel positivity rate at our institution was similar as previously published. Our results highlight the need for diagnostic-stewardship interventions when utilizing this assay by implementing a stepwise approach based on a limited number of clinical and laboratory features. This decision rule may improve the pretest probability of a positive test result, increase the quality of test utilization, and reduce costs.

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and can be accompanied by a spectrum of psychiatric symptoms, such as schizophrenia and catatonia. Rarely, these symptoms, if left untreated, can result in spinal deformities. Research question and case description: This case report details the treatment of a 16-year-old male ASD patient with catatonic schizophrenia and mutism, presenting with neck pain, left-rotated torticollis, and fever. MRI revealed atlantoaxial rotational instability and spinal cord compression from a dislocated dens axis. After inconclusive biopsies, empirical antibiotics, hard collar and halo fixation treatment, persistent instability necessitated C1/2 fusion. The ongoing catatonia was addressed with electroconvulsive therapy. Concurrently, he developed severe subaxial hyperkyphosis. The report examines the decision-making between conservative and surgical management for an adolescent with significant psychiatric comorbidity and progressive spinal symptoms against a backdrop of uncertain etiology. Materials and methods: A case report and review of the literature. Results: Posterior C1-C7 stabilization was successfully executed, effectively restoring cervical sagittal alignment, which was maintained throughout a two-year follow-up. Concurrently, the catatonia resolved. Discussion and conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the third reported case of severe cervical deformity associated with fixed posture in a psychiatric patient. This case report emphasizes the critical importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in managing the interplay between neuropsychiatric disorders and severe spinal deformities. It showcases the practicality and efficacy of surgical intervention for persistent cervical deformity in pediatric schizophrenia patients, highlighting the necessity for a comprehensive risk-benefit analysis.
