Background and Objective: This review paper focuses on sleep bruxism (SB) in children and adolescents. It aims to assess the landscape of knowledge published in the last 20 years. Methods: A total of 144 relevant publications from 386 previously identified through Medline were included, of which 83 were on possible SB, 37 on probable SB, 20 on definite SB and 4 were non‐applicable. The review places emphasis on the recent evidence on prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of SB in children and adolescents, with special focus on probable and definitive SB. Results: The prevalence ranges from 5% to 50% depending on the age range and on the SB diagnosis (possible, probable or definitive). The pathophysiology is multifactorial, arousal associated and with behavioural problems and sleep disorders (obstructive sleep apnoea, snoring, nightmares) as risk factors, as well as respiratory conditions (allergies, oral breathing). Screening should include questionnaires and dental assessment. Instrumental recording is helpful to confirm diagnosis although more studies are needed to validate this approach in children. SB management includes controlling orofacial and dental consequences and assessing for any other comorbidity. Management options include occlusal splints, oral appliances (advancement mandibular), rapid maxillary expansion and some medications, although this last option is supported by limited evidences in children. Conclusion: Suggestions of future topics in research are delivered to better understand comorbidities, diagnosis and management with improved outcomes compared to what is currently available. Background: Women with pain present decreased sleep duration and quality of life, but little is known about the consequences of nighttime pain on overall health. Our goal was to compare levels of anxiety, depression and fatigue in women with pain during the night with those without pain. We hypothesized that pain perception is associated with the worsening of fatigue and mood. Methods: In total, 244 women aged 20–80 years who took part in the Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO) met the inclusion criteria, 85 in the self‐reported pain group and 171 in the control group. Participants were assigned to the pain group if they both responded (i) they generally had pain, according to Pre‐Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) and (ii) their pain generally interfered with their sleep 3 or more times a week, according to Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Those who answered negatively to both questions were allocated to the control group. All participants underwent a full night laboratory polysomnography, and completed questionnaires related to fatigue, depression, anxiety and quality of life. Results: Pain group participants had a significantly lower perception of quality of life, and significantly higher levels of fatigue (5.4 times), anxiety and depression. Pain perception was also correlated to levels of anxiety and depression in the psychological (rs = −0.463, −0.607, respectively) and social (rs = −0.423, −0.438, respectively) quality of life domains. Conclusions: Nighttime pain in women was associated with decreased quality of life, worsening mood and fatigue. Our data shows the importance of investigating pain and its deleterious effects on women's health. Significance: Our study highlights that women experiencing nighttime pain also reported worse mood outcomes and decreased quality of life, regardless of the level and type of pain. Our data, based on association analysis and not investigating causality, suggest it is important to consider nighttime pain in clinical care to improve quality of life and general health. Aims: (1) To summarize current knowledge on the prevalence, intensity, and descriptors of orofacial pain and snoring/obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) before and after head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment; and (2) to propose future directions for research. Methods: The median prevalence for each condition was estimated from the most recent systematic reviews (SRs) and updated with new findings retrieved from the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to December 2021. Results: The prevalence of HNC pain seems relatively stable over time, with a median of 31% before treatment in three studies to a median of 39% at 1 month to 16 years after treatment in six studies. HNC pain intensity remains mild to moderate. There was a threefold increase in temporomandibular pain prevalence after surgery (median 7.25% before to 21.3% after). The data for snoring prevalence are unreliable. The OSA/HNC prevalence seems relatively stable over time, with a median of 72% before treatment in three studies to 77% after treatment in 14 studies. Conclusion: With the exception of temporomandibular pain, the prevalence of HNC pain and OSA seems to be stable over time. Future studies should: (1) compare the trajectory of change over time according to each treatment; (2) compare individuals with HNC to healthy subjects; (3) use a standardized and comparable method of data collection; and (4) assess tolerance to oral or breathing devices, since HNC individuals may have mucosal sensitivity or pain. Exacerbation of nighttime sleep-related oromotor activity is often recognized as a relevant clinical entity commonly known as sleep bruxism (SB). Many pragmatic issues about SB diagnosis and management remain controversial. Therefore, within a critical review of the literature, this article proposes an operational clinical approach for SB diagnosis and management, with a focus on three comorbidities frequently occurring in relation to sleep: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and insomnia. In the absence of any comorbidities, and if clinically justified, short-term medication and/or splints may be considered. If a comorbid condition is suspected, then the patient should be screened for OSA, GERD, and insomnia. For OSA screening, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOP-Bang, and NoSAS questionnaires are available validated tools. For GERD screening, a positive patient report, whether associated or not with clinical signs and symptoms of heartburn and/or regurgitation, can be tested. For insomnia screening, report of difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep or of early morning awakening more than three times a week may be useful for diagnosis clarification. An adequate clinical approach for comorbid SB requires that both SB and the related comorbid condition be properly assessed and managed. Very often, improvement of SB with treatment of the associated condition will confirm the relationship and establish a more precise diagnosis (ie, secondary SB). Clinicians intending to manage SB should be able to identify these possible clinical interactions, and, if needed, perform an integrative multidimensional approach. Introduction: Sleep bruxism (SB) is defined as a stereotyped and periodic movement disorder, characterized by tooth grinding and/or clenching occurring during sleep, associated with rhythmic masticatory muscle activity. This condition isn't a disease, but when exacerbated may cause an unbalance and changing of orofacial structures. Thus, it is necessary to obtain effective and safe treatments for the control and management of the bruxist patient. The treatment alternatives range from oral devices, pharmacological therapies to cognitive-behavioral techniques. Objective: This study, a systematic literature review having as research bases MEDLINE, Cochrane, EMBASE, Pubmed, Lilacs and BBO, between the years of 1990 and 2008, with focus in randomized and quasi-randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, had as objective to analyze and discuss possibilities of treatment for sleep bruxism. Results: According to the literature analysis there is a lot of treatment options for the SB, but many of the therapies have no scientific support. Thus, the choice therapy should be based on scientific evidences and in clinical common sense, for an improvement in quality of life of the bruxist patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
