5. Shadow multiplets in AdS_4/CFT_3 and the super-Higgs mechanism: hints of new shadow supergravities

Abstract

We discuss a general pairing that occurs in compactifications of M-theory on AdS_4 x X^7 backgrounds between massless ultra short multiplets and their massive shadows, namely certain universal long multiplets with fixed protected dimensions. In particular we consider the shadow of the short graviton multiplet in N=3 compactifications. It turns out to be a massive spin 3/2 multiplet with scale dimension E_0=3 and with the quantum numbers of a super-Higgs multiplet. Hence each N=3 AdS_4 x X^7 vacuum is actually to be interpreted as a spontaneously broken phase of an N=4 theory. Comparison with standard gauged N=4 supergravity in 4 dimensions reveals the unexpected bound E_0<3 on the dimension of the broken gravitino multiplet. This hints to the existence of new versions of extended supergravities, in particular N=4 where such upper bounds are evaded and where all possible vacua have a reduced supersymmetry N_0

6. Rings of short N=3 superfields in three dimensions and M-theory on AdS_4 x N^{0,1,0}

Abstract

In this paper we investigate three-dimensional superconformal gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. Independently from specific models, we derive the shortening conditions for unitary representations of the Osp(3|4) superalgebra and we express them in terms of differential constraints on three dimensional N=3 superfields. We find a ring structure underlying these short representations, which is just the direct generalization of the chiral ring structure of N=2 theories. When the superconformal field theory is realized on the world-volume of an M2-brane such superfield ring is the counterpart of the ring defined by the algebraic geometry of the 8-dimensional cone transverse to the brane. This and other arguments identify the N=3 superconformal field theory dual to M-theory compactified on AdS_4 x N^{0,1,0}. It is an N=3 gauge theory with SU(N) x SU(N) gauge group coupled to a suitable set of hypermultiplets, with an additional Chern Simons interaction. The AdS/CFT correspondence can be directly verified using the recently worked out Kaluza Klein spectrum of N^{0,1,0} and we find a perfect match. We also note that besides the usual set of BPS conformal operators dual to the lightest KK states, we find that the composite operators corresponding to certain massive KK modes are organized into a massive spin 3/2 N=3 multiplet that might be identified with the super-Higgs multiplet of a spontaneously broken N=4 theory. Abstract

In this paper we fill a necessary gap in order to realize the explicit comparison between the Kaluza Klein spectra of supergravity compactified on AdS_4 x X^7 and superconformal field theories living on the world volume of M2-branes. On the algebraic side we consider the superalgebra Osp(N|4) and we study the double interpretation of its irreducible representations either as supermultiplets of particle states in the bulk or as conformal superfields on the boundary. On the lagrangian field theory side we construct, using rheonomy rather than superfield techniques, the generic form of an N=2, d=3 gauge theory. We derive the free Osp(8|4) singleton action by sending the M2brane to the Minkowski boundary of an AdS_4x{\cal M}_7 background. We do this by means of the solvable Lie algebra parametrization of the coset space. Abstract

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to over 1 million deaths worldwide and has been associated with cardiac complications including cardiac arrhythmias. The incidence and pathophysiology of these manifestations remain elusive. In this worldwide survey of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who developed cardiac arrhythmias, we describe clinical characteristics associated with various arrhythmias, as well as global differences in modulations of routine electrophysiology practice during the pandemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection worldwide with and without incident cardiac arrhythmias. Patients with documented atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, nonsustained or sustained ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrioventricular block, or marked sinus bradycardia (heart rate<40 bpm) were classified as having arrhythmia. Deidentified data was provided by each institution and analyzed. Results: Data were collected for 4526 patients across 4 continents and 12 countries, 827 of whom had an arrhythmia. Cardiac comorbidities were common in patients with arrhythmia: 69% had hypertension, 42% diabetes, 30% had heart failure, and 24% had coronary artery disease. Most had no prior history of arrhythmia. Of those who did develop an arrhythmia, the majority (81.8%) developed atrial arrhythmias, 20.7% developed ventricular arrhythmias, and 22.6% had bradyarrhythmia. Regional differences suggested a lower incidence of atrial fibrillation in Asia compared with other continents (34% versus 63%). Most patients in North America and Europe received hydroxychloroquine, although the frequency of hydroxychloroquine therapy was constant across arrhythmia types. Abstract

Biowaste-derived substances isolated from green compost (BBS-GC) are environmentally friendly reactants similar to humic substances, which contain multiple functionalities, that are suitable for adsorbing different kinds of pollutants in wastewater. Herein, sodium alginate (derived from brown algae) cross-linked with both Ca2+ ions and BBS-GC in the form of hydrogels and dried films are proposed as green, easy-to-form, and handleable materials for tertiary water treatments. The results show that both hydrogels and films are mechanically stable and can effectively remove differently charged dyes through an adsorption mechanism that can be described by the Freundlich model. BBS-GC-containing gels always performed better than samples prepared without BBS-GC, revealing that such unconventional materials can integrate waste valorization and water decontamination, potentially providing social and environmental benefits.

Abstract

Accurate assessment of biomechanical risk associated with pushing/pulling tasks represents a challenging issue, especially in the health system where personnel are often required to maneuver beds and carts. Most studies in this field have been carried out in the laboratory, while few data have been collected under actual working conditions. This study aims to characterize the forces exerted during non-powered hospital bed maneuvering. Twenty participants were required to move a bed (equipped with a customized handlebar to measure exerted forces) along an actual hospital path including straight, turn and maneuver phases. The results show that higher forces are associated with the initial phase (peak and mean values 222 and 68 N) while the straight, turn and maneuvering phases required similar (lower) efforts. The combined effect of left, right and transversal forces suggests that the trunk of the operator might experience axial rotation, thus calling for further investigations of this aspect. 27. Synthesis and characterization of B/NaF and silicon phthalocyanine-modified TiO2 and an evaluation of their photocatalytic removal of carbamazepine

Abstract

This study investigated the synthesis of two different types of photocatalysts, namely, boron/sodium fluoride co-doped titanium dioxide (B/NaF-TiO2), and its analogue, a dye-sensitized form of silicon-based axial methoxy substituted phthalocyanine (B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc). Structural and morphological characterizations were performed via X-ray diffraction (XRD); Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR); N2 adsorption–desorption at 77 K by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda (BJH) methods; transmission electron microscopy (TEM); X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The estimated crystallite size of pure TiO2 and pure B/NaF-TiO2 was 24 nm, and that of B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc was 29 nm, whereas particle sizes determined by TEM were 25, 28, and 31 nm for pure TiO2, B/NaF-TiO2 and B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc respectively. No significant differences between B/NaF-TiO2 and B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc were observed for surface area by (BET) analysis (13 m2 /g) or total pore volume by the BJH application model (0.05 cm3 /g). Energy band gap values obtained for B/NaF-TiO2 and B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc were 3.10 and 2.90 eV respectively, lower than pure TiO2 (3.17 eV). The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized materials was tested using carbamazepine (CBZ) as the model substrate. Carbamazepine removal after 4 h of irradiation was almost 100% for B/NaF-TiO2 and 70% for B/NaF-TiO2 SiPc; however, the substrate mineralization proceeded slower, suggesting the presence of organic intermediates after the complete disappearance of the pollutant. © 2020 by the authors. Abstract

Waste-derived bio-based substances (BBS) isolated from urbancomposted biowaste are supramolecular aggregates structurally similar to soil humic substances, showing amphiphilic properties. Moreover BBS can produce reactive species, under UV-vis irradiation, and they have been already tested as photosensitizer for the degradation of several organic substrates, among them caffeine as representative of contaminants of emerging concern. Here we report new insights on BBS performance for caffeine photodegradation in both homogeneous system and as hybrid magnetic nanoparticles in heterogeneous system. The effect of pH, the possibility to recover and re-use the nanoparticles and the assessment of the reaction mechanism have been studied and discussed.

Recently, our group has prepared an analogue of curcumin 1 (biphenol 2) We found that compound 2 was an effective breaking-chain activator in bulk lipid autoxidation , showed strong cytotoxicity against rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells, a slow-growing neuroendocrine tumoral cells and interacts with high affinity with alpha-synuclein . When Ph-OH groups are OMe protected, antiproliferative and proapoptotic activities against malignant melanoma and neuroblastoma were found [3a-c]. Biphenol 2 and its monomer 3 share many pharmacological features with curcumin 1 and, conversely to 1, compounds 2 and 3 are stable in organic and aqueous solutions. With the aim of searching for new compounds with enhanced biological activities, in the present study, we prepared a collection of derivatives of compound 2 and of monomeric equivalent 3. All new prepared compounds possess a common ?,?-unsaturated ketone moiety bearing a hydroxylated biphenyl or phenyl structure with Ph-OH group substituted with functionalities with different features (i.e. groups able to increase or decrease lipophilicity of the molecule) The new compounds were prepared through straightforward synthetic procedures. Different functional groups were introduced giving ether, ester, carbonate, sugar and acetal derivatives that influenced the physico-chemical properties of the molecule. The antiproliferative capacity of all the prepared compounds was preliminarly calculated.
