ProceduresTo assess the relationship between Manganese Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MEMRI) and the expression of calcium receptors in human prostate and breast cancer animal models.MethodsNOD/SCID mice were inoculated with MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells and prostate PC3 cancer cells to develop orthotopic or pseudometastatic cancer animal models. Mice were studied on a clinical 3T scanner by using a prototype birdcage coil before and after intravenous injection of MnCl2. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hip and elbow dysplasia in a group of growing Labrador retrievers fed a fish-based diet enriched with nutraceuticals with chondroprotective properties. The puppies ranged from 3 to 12 mo of age and were divided into 2 groups, each fed a different diet. The control diet consisted of a high quality, chicken-based dog food, while the test diet was a fish-based dog food, enriched with nutraceuticals. Hip and elbow joints were radiographed and scored at 6 and 12 mo of age. Overall, 42 dogs completed the study. At 12 mo of age, no differences were found between the groups in the prevalence of hip and elbow dysplasia, although dogs fed the fish-based food enriched with nutraceuticals had a less severe grade of osteoarthritis at 12 mo. It was concluded that the fish-based diet with nutraceuticals did have beneficial effects on the development of severe osteoarthritis.L’objectif de la présente étude était d’évaluer la prévalence de dysplasie de la hanche et du coude dans un groupe de chiens Labrador en croissance nourris avec une diète à base de poisson enrichie de neutraceutiques ayant des propriétés chondroprotectrices. L’âge des chiots variait de 3 à 12 mois et ils ont été divisés en deux groupes, chacun étant nourri avec une diète différente. La diète témoin consistait d’un aliment de haute qualité pour chien à base de poulet, alors que la diète test était un aliment pour chien à base de poisson et enrichi avec des neutraceutiques. Les articulations des hanches et des coudes ont été radiographiées à 6 et 12 mois d’âge. Un total de 42 chiens a complété l’étude. À 12 mois d’âge, aucune différence n’a été trouvée entre les groupes dans la prévalence de dysplasie de la hanche et du coude, bien que les chiens nourris avec la diète à base poisson enrichie de neutraceutiques avaient un score d’ostéoarthrite moins sévère à 12 mois. Il a été conclu que la diète à base de poisson enrichie de neutraceutiques avait des effets bénéfiques sur le développement d’ostéoarthrite sévère.(Traduit par Docteur Serge Messier).

A 7-year-old dog was presented with a history of an open lesion on the right thoracic wall, discharging honey-like fluid and small stones. Ultrasonography and computed tomographic fistulography identified a cholecystocutaneous fistula; cholecystectomy was curative. Veterinarians should consider this disease in patients with long-term discharging lesions on the right thoracic or abdominal wall.

The 8B4/20 Ag is a 120-kDa molecule whose expression on human thymocytes varies according to the differentiation stage: high density on immature CD3−/low thymocytes, reduced density on CD3medium and double-positive thymocytes, and absent on CD3high and single-positive thymocytes and on circulating T cells. In this paper we present immunological and biochemical evidence demonstrating that 8B4/20 Ag is a variant of CD43. We show that 8B4/20-expressing molecules, which are a subset of the CD43 molecules on thymocytes, are heterogeneous in charge, suggesting varying sialylation levels. The 8B4/20 epitope was mapped to the peripherally exposed N-terminal region of CD43, and the 8B4/20 antigenic determinant was characterized by requirement for the sialic acid exocyclic polyhydroxyl side chain, a feature shared with ligands of CD22. Altogether, 8B4/20-CD43 expression pattern and biochemical characteristics suggest its participation in carbohydrate-based interactions in the thymus. We therefore used specific Ab to mimic putative 8B4/20 interactions with natural ligand and examined the effect on isolated thymocytes. Treatment with 8B4/20 had no effect on in vitro apoptosis of isolated thymocytes. In contrast, 8B4/20 ligation enhanced the conversion of isolated thymocytes to differentiated phenotypes. Increased numbers were found in 8B4/20-treated cultures of CD3high and single-positive thymocytes and decreased numbers of CD3−/low and double-positive thymocytes, strongly suggesting that engagement of 8B4/20 delivers a positive signal that favors completion of the thymocyte maturation program. The ability of 8B4/20 mAb to drive thymocyte maturation in vitro suggests that CD43 molecules bearing the 8B4/20 epitope participate in early events of thymic selection.

Here we report the use of random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) and sequence analysis of the genes encoding for the small subunit ribosomal RNA (16S rDNA) for the characterisation of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato strains recovered from Ixodes ricinus and from Lyme disease patients. All strains examined were assigned to the species Borrelia garinii. However, both RAPDs and 16S rDNAs revealed a level of genetic variation among the strains which appears higher than expected for a bacterial species. In addition, the data obtained agree with the clonal theory applied to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. for explaining some traits of its epidemiology. According to this theory, particular strains should spread rapidly, leading to the diffusion of bacteria with a particular chromosomal genotype. Our results reveal high genetic variation even among strains isolated in the same period from a restricted geographic area. Moreover, the data here reported indicate that clonal diffusion of antigenic characteristics could also occur.
