1. Pairing properties of semilocal coordinate&momentum-space regularized chiral interactions

Abstract: We investigate the pairing properties of state-of-the-art semilocal coordinate-space and semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions. Specifically, we calculate the pairing gaps in $^3SD_1$ channel of symmetric nuclear matter and in $^1S_0$ and $^3PF_2$ channels of pure neutron matter within the BCS approximation using these chiral interactions. We address the regulator and chiral order dependence of the pairing gaps and compare the pairing properties of the chiral interactions with those of the Argonne v18 (Av18) potential. The effects of the tensor force on the pairing gaps in the $^3SD_1$ and $^3PF_2$ channels are illustrated for both the chiral interactions and the Av18 potential. We evaluate the truncation errors of chiral expansions of the pairing gaps with a Bayesian approach. We find that the pairing gaps converge very well at the higher-order chiral expansions in the $^3SD_1$ and $^1S_0$ channels.

2. Spin-orbit coupling in wurtzite quantum wells

Abstract: Effective spin-orbit (SO) Hamiltonians for conduction electrons in wurtzite heterostructures are lacking in the literature, in contrast to zincblende structures. Here we address this issue by deriving such an effective Hamiltonian valid for quantum wells, wires, and dots with arbitrary confining potentials and external magnetic fields. We start from an 8$\times$8 Kane model accounting for the $s$--$p_z$ orbital mixing important to wurtzite structures, but absent in zincblende, and apply both quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (L\"owdin partitioning) and the folding down approach to derive an effective 2$\times$2 electron Hamiltonian. We obtain the usual $k$-linear Rashba term arising from the structural inversion asymmetry of the wells and, differently from zincblende structures, a bulk Rashba-type term induced by the inversion asymmetry of the wurtzite lattice. We also find linear- and cubic-in-momentum Dresselhaus contributions. Both the bulk Rashba-type term and the Dresselhaus terms originate exclusively from the admixture of $s$- and $p_z$-like states in wurtzites structures. Interestingly, in these systems the linear Rashba and the Dresselhaus terms have the same symmetry and can in principle cancel each other out completely, thus making the spin a conserved quantity. We determine the intrasubband (intersubband) Rashba $\alpha_\nu$ ($\eta$) and linear Dresselhaus $\beta_\nu$ ($\Gamma$) SO strengths of GaN/AlGaN single and double wells with one and two occupied subbands ($\nu=1,2$). Abstract: The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22\theta_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. 4. The inner barrier mediated spin–orbit control in stepped quantum wells.

Abstract: The inner barrier in stepped quantum wells, which embrace an intrinsic structural inversion asymmetry (SIA), offers more possibilities for the multi-band spin–orbit (SO) control. By varying the inner band offset δ , which adjusts the quantum confinement for electrons and also the SIA, we reveal that both the Rashba ( α ν ) and Dresselhaus ( β ν ) SO coeffcients of the two subbands exhibit contrasting dependence on δ. Also, α 1 and α 2 may have opposite signs, depending on the value of δ. By fine tuning the inner offset, there may even exist a scenario in which α 2 identically vanishes but α 1 is finite, offering a knob on how to subband-selectively suppress spin relaxation induced by SO coupling. In addition, by resorting to an external gate V g , we reveal that in the regime of α 1 and α 2 having opposite signs, their magnitudes also vary with V g in an opposite manner. This, together with the engineered inner barrier of stepped wells, will facilitate flexible spin manipulation. Finally, the interband SO couplings, which depend on the spatial overlap of wave functions of distinct subbands and the corresponding parities, are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Spin-orbit interaction in GaAs wells: From one to two subbands

Abstract: We investigate the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit (SO) couplings in GaAs quantum wells in the range of well widths $w$ allowing for a transition of the electron occupancy from one to two subbands. By performing a detailed Poisson-Schr\"odinger self-consistent calculation, we determine all the intra- and inter-subband Rashba ($\alpha_1$, $\alpha_2$, $\eta$) and Dresselhaus ($\beta_1$, $\beta_2$, $\Gamma$) coupling strengths. For relatively narrow wells with only one subband occupied, our results are consistent with the data of Koralek \emph{et al.} [Nature \bfs{48}, 610 (2009)], i.e., the Rashba coupling $\alpha_1$ is essentially independent of $w$ in contrast to the decreasing linear Dresselhaus coefficient $\beta_1$. When we widen the well so that the second subband can also be populated, we observe that $\alpha_2$ decreases and $\alpha_1$ increases, both almost linearly with $w$. Interestingly, we find that in the parameter range studied (i.e., very asymmetric wells) $\alpha_2$ can attain zero and change its sign, while $\alpha_1$ is always positive. In this double-occupancy regime of $w$'s, $\beta_1$ is mostly constant and $\beta_2$ decreases with $w$ (similarly to $\beta_1$ for the single-occupancy regime). On the other hand, the intersubband Rashba coupling strength $\eta$ decreases with $w$ while the intersubband Dresselhaus $\Gamma$ remains almost constant. We also determine the persistent-spin-helix symmetry points, at which the Rashba and the renormalized (due to cubic corrections) linear Dresselhaus couplings in each subband are equal, as a function of the well width and doping asymmetry. Abstract: A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |\Delta m_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22\theta_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: A new measurement of the $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $\theta_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Abstract: A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos ($\overline{\nu}_{e}$) from six $2.9$ GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} $ and the first direct measurement of the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ mass-squared difference $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 $ is obtained using the observed $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of $|\Delta m^{2}_{ee}|$ is consistent with $|\Delta m^{2}_{\mu\mu}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model., Comment: As accepted for publication by Phys. Abstract: We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is $0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.})$. Abstract: The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin$^22\theta_{13}$ at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. 12. Spin-orbit coupling and $g$-factor of $X$-valley in cubic GaN

Abstract: We report our theoretically investigation on the spin-orbit coupling and $g$-factor of the $X$-valley in cubic GaN. We find that the spin-orbit coupling coefficient from $sp^3d^5s^\ast$ tight-binding model is 0.029\,eV$\cdot${\AA}, which is comparable with that in cubic GaAs. By employing the ${\bf k}\cdot{\bf p}$ theory, we find that the $g$-factor in this case is only slightly different from the free electron $g$-factor. These results are expected to be important for the on-going study on spin dynamics far away from equilibrium in cubic GaN., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

Abstract: Using group theory and Kane-like $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ model together with the L\"owdining partition method, we derive the expressions of spin-orbit coupling of electrons and holes, including the linear-$k$ Rashba term due to the intrinsic structure inversion asymmetry and the cubic-$k$ Dresselhaus term due to the bulk inversion asymmetry in wurtzite semiconductors. The coefficients of the electron and hole Dresselhaus terms of ZnO and GaN in wurtzite structure and GaN in zinc-blende structure are calculated using the nearest-neighbor $sp^3$ and $sp^3s^\ast$ tight-binding models separately., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, to be published in J. Abstract: We study the spin-orbit coupling in the whole Brillouin zone for GaAs using both the $sp^3s^{\ast}d^5$ and $sp^3s^{\ast}$ nearest-neighbor tight-binding models. In the $\Gamma$-valley, the spin splitting obtained is in good agreement with experimental data. We then further explicitly present the coefficients of the spin splitting in GaAs $L$ and $X$ valleys. Abstract: OBJECTIVE: MiRNA has been found to have therapeutic effect on corneal damage. This paper aimed to study the effect of miR-205-3p on corneal damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HCE cell were exposed to UV light and transfected. Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRTPCR) and Western blot were used to determine miRNA/mRNA and protein expression. CCK-8 assay, Edu incorporation experiment, and flow cytometry were used to separately measure cell activity, proliferation and apoptosis. LC3 puncta were researched by immunofluorescence experiment. TNF-a, IL-6 and IL-1ß levels in cells were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. MDA, SOD, and GSH-PX levels were measured using detection kits. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was reflected by detecting DCFH-DA density. Luciferase activity assay was performed to verify the regulating relationship between miR-205-3p and TLR4. RESULTS: UV radiation decreased HCE cell viability, proliferation, and increased HCE cell apoptosis and autophagy (all p < 0.01). When exposed UV radiation, the overexpression of miR- 205-3p group elevated HCE cells viability, proliferation and weakened HCE cells apoptosis and autophagy (all p < 0.01). MiR-205-3p inhibited inflammation and oxidative stress in HCE cells induced by UV radiation (p < 0.01). MiR-205-3p directly inhibited TLR4 expression. The upregulation of TLR4 significantly reversed the effects of miR-205-3p on HCE cell phenotypes induced by UV radiation (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: MiR-205-3p protected HCE cells from UV damage by inhibiting autophagy via targeting TLR4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Spin-polarized current through a ferromagnetic/organic interface was studied theoretically. This study was stimulated by recent experiments on La1-xSrxMnO3/Alq3/Co and La1-xSrxMnO3/sexithienyl/La1-xSrxMnO3 structures. According to the spin-diffusion equation, the current spin polarization was obtained by assuming that spin polarons as well as spinless bipolarons to be the carriers in the organic semiconductor. It was found that polarons are the effective spin carriers of a spin-polarized current, even though they constitute only a fraction of all carriers. Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential role of miRNA-517-5p in preeclampsia and its underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Placenta samples were obtained from 20 women with preeclampsia and 20 women with normal pregnancies. Expression level of miR-517-5p in placenta samples and JAR cells was detected. MiRNA-517-5p mimics or inhibitor was transfected in JAR cells, followed by detection of proliferative and invasive abilities of JAR cells. In addition, the expressions of extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK), phospho-extracellular regulated protein kinases (p-ERK) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in JAR cells were evaluated by Western blot. Meanwhile, the mRNA level of MMP-2 was evaluated by Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The luciferase assay was applied to identify the target gene of miRNA-517-5p. RESULTS: Increased level of miR-517-5p was detected in placenta samples of preeclampsia patients compared with normal pregnancies. MiRNA-517-5p could regulate proliferative and invasive abilities of JAR cells. Furthermore, miRNA-517-5p could regulate ERK/MMP-2 pathway in JAR cells, which would contribute to the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. The luciferase assay showed MMP-2 was the target gene of miR-517-5p. Further studies showed that MMP-2 was dysregulated in preeclampsia. CONCLUSIONS: MiR-517-5p is highly expressed in placenta samples of preeclampsia pregnancies, which could promote proliferative and invasive abilities of JAR cells by inhibiting ERK/MMP-2 pathway. Abstract: Summary: Studies on the effect of different shape strategies on wind‐induced responses of super tall buildings have been extensive. However, little systematic research on the influence of aerodynamic shapes on wind pressure distributions of super high‐rise building having a height more than 500 m is reported in the literature. In this paper, a series of wind tunnel tests are conducted on models simulating tapered buildings taller than 500 m with an aspect ratio of 9:1 by applying synchronous pressure measurement technology to investigate the influence of different shape strategies on the wind force coefficients of the cross section (Cs) and on the peak negative pressure distributions on surfaces. The shape strategies considered include tapering of the cross section of a building along its height, chamfered modification, and opening ventilation slots. It is found that the wind force coefficient Cs increase with an increase of the tapering ratio. It is shown that chamfered modification can effectively reduce most of the wind force coefficients Cs to less than 0.9. As for peak wind pressures, a zone having a higher negative pressure is found to locate at the bottom of the side faces of the model. With an increase of the tapering ratio, the peak negative pressure of side faces of the model slightly decreases. Chamfered modification can significantly increase the peak negative pressure at the chamfered location. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that opening ventilation slots had less effect on Cs, but the peak negative pressure can significantly increase at the area of opening ventilation slots and adjacent areas. Abstract: Abstract: Shikonin and its derivatives are important medicinal secondary metabolites accumulating in roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Although some membrane proteins have been identified as transporters of secondary metabolites, the mechanisms underlying shikonin transport and accumulation in L. erythrorhizon cells still remain largely unknown. In this study, we isolated a cDNA encoding LeMRP, an ATP‐binding cassette transporter from L. erythrorhizon, and further investigated its functions in the transport and biosynthesis of shikonin using the yeast transformation and transgenic hairy root methods, respectively. Real‐time PCR was applied for expression analyses of LeMRP and shikonin biosynthetic enzyme genes. Functional analysis of LeMRP using the heterologous yeast cell expression system showed that LeMRP could be involved in shikonin transport. Transgenic hairy roots of L. erythrorhizon demonstrated that LeMRP overexpressing hairy roots produced more shikonin than the empty vector (EV) control. Real‐time PCR results revealed that the enhanced shikonin biosynthesis in the overexpression lines was mainly caused by highly up‐regulated expression of genes coding key enzymes (LePAL, HMGR, Le4CL and LePGT) involved in shikonin biosynthesis. Conversely, LeMRP RNAi decreased the accumulation of shikonin and effectively down‐regulated expression level of the above genes. Typical inhibitors of ABC proteins, such as azide and buthionine sulphoximine, dramatically inhibited accumulation of shikonin in hairy roots. Our findings provide evidence for the important direct or indirect role of LeMRP in transmembrane transport and biosynthesis of shikonin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Premature termination codons (PTCs) are an important reason for the silence of high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits in Triticumspecies. Although the Glu-A1ygene is generally silent in common wheat, we here isolated an expressed Glu-A1ygene containing a PTC, named 1Ay8.3, from Triticum monococcumssp. monococcum(AmAm, 2n = 2x = 14). Despite the presence of a PTC (TAG) at base pair positions 1879–1881 in the C-terminal coding region, this did not obviously affect 1Ay8.3expression in seeds. This was demonstrated by the fact that when the PTC TAG of 1Ay8.3was mutated to the CAG codon, the mutant in Escherichia colibacterial cells expressed the same subunit as in the seeds. However, in E. coli, 1Ay8.3containing the PTC expressed a truncated protein with faster electrophoretic mobility than that in seeds, suggesting that PTC translation termination suppression probably occurs in vivo(seeds) but not in vitro(E. coli). This may represent one of only a few reports on the PTC termination suppression phenomenon in genes.

Abstract: The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured a nonzero value for the neutrino mixing angle 0(13) with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Antineutrinos from six 2.9 GW(th) reactors were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baseline 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. With a 43 000 ton-GW(th)-day live-time exposure in 55 days, 10 416 (80 376) electron-antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to expected number of antineutrinos at the far hall is R = 0.940 +/- 0.011(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.). A rate-only analysis finds sin(2)2 theta(13) = 0.092 +/- 0.016(stat.) +/- 0.005(syst.) in a three-neutrino framework.

50. Wind-induced inter-story drift analysis and equivalent static wind load for multiple targets of tall buildings.

Abstract: In super high-rise buildings with varying story heights, the wind-induced inter-story drifts might violate the specified limit. However, these effects have seldom been concerned in wind-induced response analysis. The theory and application of equivalent static wind load (ESWL) for wind-induced inter-story drifts of super high-rise buildings were studied in this paper. A spectral decomposition method suitable for multi-point excitation problems was firstly proposed. The formula of ESWL targeting for largest inter-story drift was derived. For more reasonable structural design, the ESWL for multiple targets including displacement atop of building and inter-story drifts at all story levels is put forward, in which the dominant modal inertial forces are adopted as the based load vectors. The presented methods were finally verified by its application for the wind-induced response analysis for a tallest super tall building in Guangzhou. The researched results showed that the proposed spectral decomposition method not only has the same precision as the complete quadratic combination method but also possesses higher computation efficiency. The ESWL for multiple targets produces the same static responses for all the specified wind-induced response, so it is much more rational for wind-resistant structural design. Meanwhile, it is more reasonable to select the wind-induced responses in the same direction simultaneously as the targeted values for obtaining the required ESWLs; however, the ESWL targeting for the wind-induced responses in all degrees of freedom would generate more queer and unrealistic ESWLs distribution.
