1. Heavy tails and negative correlation in a binomial model for sports matches: applications to curling

Abstract

A binomial model for sports matches is developed making use of the maximum possible score $n$ in a game. In contrast to previous approaches the scores of the two teams are negatively correlated, abstracting from a scenario whereby teams cancel each other out. When $n$ is known, analytical results are possible via a Gaussian approximation. Model calibration is obtained via generalized linear modelling, enabling elementary econometric and strategic analysis to be performed. Inter alia this includes quantifying the Last Stone First End effect, analogous to the home-field advantage found in conventional sports. When $n$ is unknown the model behaviour is richer and leads to heavy-tailed non-Gaussian behaviour. We present an approximate analysis of this case based on the Variance Gamma distribution.

Abstract

The IoT vision of a trillion connected devices over the next decade requires reliable end-to-end connectivity and automated device management platforms. While we have seen successful efforts for maintaining small IoT testbeds, there are multiple challenges for the efficient management of large-scale device deployments. With Industrial IoT, incorporating millions of devices, traditional management methods do not scale well. In this work, we address these challenges by designing a set of novel machine learning techniques, which form a foundation of a new tool, it IoTelligent, for IoT device management, using traffic characteristics obtained at the network level. The design of our tool is driven by the analysis of 1-year long networking data, collected from 350 companies with IoT deployments. The exploratory analysis of this data reveals that IoT environments follow the famous Pareto principle, such as: (i) 10% of the companies in the dataset contribute to 90% of the entire traffic; (ii) 7% of all the companies in the set own 90% of all the devices. We designed and evaluated CNN, LSTM, and Convolutional LSTM models for demand forecasting, with a conclusion of the Convolutional LSTM model being the best. However, maintaining and updating individual company models is expensive. In this work, we design a novel, scalable approach, where a general demand forecasting model is built using the combined data of all the companies with a normalization factor. Moreover, we introduce a novel technique for device management, based on autoencoders. They automatically extract relevant device features to identify device groups with similar behavior to flag anomalous devices.

The pandemic has placed unprecedented pressures upon staff and students alike. Yet performance management of academics including Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) persists. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has intervened on this issue. We develop new methods enabling better treatment of pandemic-era SET. Analysis of UK National Student Survey (NSS) data suggests 85% of institutions meet reasonable performance expectations during the pandemic. Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN aims to make a precision measurement of the ultra-rare decay $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$, and relies on a differential Cherenkov detector (KTAG) to identify charged kaons at an average rate of 50 MHz in a 750 MHz unseparated hadron beam. The experimental sensitivity of NA62 to K-decay branching ratios (BR) of $10^{-11}$ requires a time resolution for the KTAG of better than 100 ps, an efficiency better than 95% and a contamination of the kaon sample that is smaller than $10^{-4}$. A prototype version of the detector was tested in 2012, during the first NA62 technical run, in which the required resolution of 100 ps was achieved and the necessary functionality of the light collection system and electronics was demonstrated.

Abstract

Chronic hepatitis B, a major cause of liver disease and cancer, affects >250 million people worldwide. Currently there is no cure, only suppressive therapies. Efforts to develop finite curative hepatitis B virus (HBV) therapies are underway, consisting of combinations of multiple novel agents with or without nucleos(t)ide reverse-transcriptase inhibitors. The HBV Forum convened a webinar in July 2021, along with subsequent working group discussions to address how and when to stop finite therapy for demonstration of sustained off-treatment efficacy and safety responses. Participants included leading experts in academia, clinical practice, pharmaceutical companies, patient representatives, and regulatory agencies. This Viewpoints article outlines areas of consensus within our multistakeholder group for stopping finite therapies in chronic hepatitis B investigational studies, including trial design, patient selection, outcomes, biomarkers, predefined stopping criteria, predefined retreatment criteria, duration of investigational therapies, and follow-up after stopping therapy. 25. 'Life in the Travelling Circus' : a sociological analysis of the lives of touring professional golfers

Abstract

As sports become more professionalised and international in scope athletes increasingly migrate from one country to another. These individuals are required to adjust and adapt quickly when moving internationally. Literature on sports migration, however, tends to focus on routes and pathways rather than the effects of movement on the athletes themselves. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore how the frequent workplace circulation inherent in the lives of highly skilled migrants affects their social selves. Using professional golf as a case study, this project includes an analysis of family issues, relationships between players, pay and conditions, and technical approaches to playing golf. Interviews were conducted with 20 male professional golfers and analysed from a figurational standpoint. As golf tournaments are increasingly staged in a myriad of different countries players are required to spend longer periods of time away from home and experience intense feelings of loneliness and isolation. It is argued that golfers are not isolated in terms of people who they have around them while on tour, but rather in terms of lack of contact with people who they have positive meaningful feelings towards, such as their family and friends. To help reduce this loneliness, golfers develop behaviours that foster temporary we-group alliances with other players they perceive to be similar to themselves. People in such groups are friends, characterised by bonds of togetherness, while also enemies showing evidence of conflicts as they are in direct competition for a share of the overall prize money. Indeed the monetary rewards available for top golfers continues to increase, however, such recompense is only available to small numbers and the majority fare poorly. It is argued that the prize money breakdown fosters internalised behaviour constraints whereby many players 'gamble' on pursuing golf as their main source of income despite the odds against them. This habitus is strengthened given the significant financial investments many players have made to fulfil their childhood dreams, which further blurs their ability to see the reality of their lives. The result is many golfers are constrained to develop networks with sponsors for financial reasons which leaves some with conflicting choices between regular income, and adhering to restrictive contractual agreements, or the freedom to choose between different brands. As such, overall the results of this study highlight the importance of considering the cultural and social adaptations required in the life of a transient migrant.

Abstract

The first search for ultra-rare $K^+$ decays into the $\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. An upper limit of $1.4\times 10^{-8}$ at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the $K^+\to\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be $(7.2\pm0.7)\times 10^{-11}$. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of $10^{-9}$ for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: $K^+\to\pi^+aa$, $a\to e^+e^-$ and $K^+\to\pi^+S$, $S\to A^\prime A^\prime$, $A^\prime\to e^+e^-$. 30. Statistical modelling of financial crashes

Abstract

As the stock market came to the attention of increasing numbers of physicists, an idea that has recently emerged is that it might be possible to develop a mathematical theory of stock market crashes. This thesis is primarily concerned with statistical aspects of such a theory. Chapters 1-5 discuss simple models for bubbles. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 describes a skeleton exploratory analysis, before discussing some economic interpretations of crashes and a rational expectations model of financial crashes - a slightly simplified version of that in Johansen et aZ. (2000). This model assumes that economic variables undergo a phase transition prior to a crash, and we give some empirical support of this idea in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 3 discusses SDE models for bubbles. We describe maximum likelihood estimation of the Bornette and Andersen (2002) model and refine previous estimation of this model in Andersen and Bornette (2004). Further, we extend this model using a heavy-tailed hyperbolic process, Eberlein and Keller (1995), to provide a robust statistical test for bubbles. In Chapter 4 we examine a range of volatility and liquidity precursors. We have some evidence that crashes occur on volatile illiquid markets and economic interpretation of our results appears interesting. Chapter 5 synthesises Chapters 2-4. In Chapter 6 we develop calculations in Johansen and Bornette (2001), to derive a generalised Pareto distribution for drawdowns. In addition, we review the Bornette et aZ. (2004) method of using power-laws to distinguish between endogenous and exogenous origins of crises. Despite some evidence to support the original approach, it appears that a better model is a stochastic volatility model where the log volatility is fractional Gaussian noise. Arias (2003) makes a distinction between insurance crisis and illiquidity crisis models. In Chapter 7, focusing upon illiquidity crises, we apply the method of Malevergne and Barnette (2005) to evaluate contagion in economics. Chapter 8 summarises the main findings and gives suggestions for further work.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of contextual variables on match running performance (MRP) in a category three English Academy U18 soccer team during a competitive season. Total distance (TD), high speed running (HSR) and sprinting (SPT) performance was analysed during the 2020-2021 season. A total of 25 league games were analysed using Catapult Vector GPS (10Hz) and 14 outfield players included for analysis. Players were classified into full back (n = 4), central defender (n = 2), wide midfielder (n = 2), central midfielder (n = 2) and forward (n = 2). Dependent variables were TD, HSR and SPT and independent variables were: match location, match outcome, opposition strength and fixture congestion. Non-significant differences were found for TD and HSR which was higher during all home games compared to all away games, and specifically during home wins compared to away wins. There were no significant differences in MRP against stronger or weaker strength opponents or during period of fixture congestion. Positional comparison showed wide midfielders to complete more SPT than central midfielders during home wins (p < .05). All other positional differences were non-significant. Practitioners should examine the influence of contextual variables on a club and positional basis to inform individualised training schedules in support of the player development pathway.

Abstract

Blackbird species (Icteridae) are considered a primary cause of yield loss prior to harvest in wild rice, which equaled about $3 million in 2007. Although rice consumption should be a null model of bird damage to yield, data from cage traps and point counts indicate that blackbird flocks arrive in wild rice fields 3 to 4 weeks before rice was available for consumption, but coincidental with the time when blackbird form post-breeding flocks. Wild rice plants appear to be attractive habitat from the time the wild rice begins heading until it is harvested (c. 6 weeks), even though wild rice is a food source only for the last 2 to 3 weeks (milk stage to harvest of mature grains). The onset of occurrence in wild rice fields appears to be a function of breeding season of red-winged blackbird and Brewer’s blackbird, specifically they arrive shortly after the time when young-of-the-year become independent of parental care (first week of July). Hence, nesting phenology is the best predictor of blackbird occurrence and their potential damage to wild rice.

Abstract

A sample of $1.3 \times 10^5 K^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu \gamma$ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017-2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.
