9. Prevalence and predictors of suicide ideation among university and high-school students during India's 2nd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Student suicide ideation increased globally during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. There is scarce literature addressing suicide ideation during global health crises. Therefore, this study investigates prevalence and predictors of suicide ideation during India's COVID-19 Second Wave. We also examine the 3-Step Theory's assertion that both pain and hopelessness are necessary to have suicidal thoughts. Sample recruitment was through an online anonymous questionnaire. Inclusion criteria included students aged 18 or older, living in India during the time of the study (N = 535). Data collection was through the online questionnaire. Three categories of variables were investigated as potential predictors of suicide ideation: Sociodemographic (e.g., age, gender, education, economic status), COVID-19-specific (e.g., online classes, fear of virus contagion, vaccination status) and Clinical (e.g., sad mood, fear, loneliness, hopelessness). Data analysis (using SPSS-26) included descriptive statistics for describing data characteristics, Spearman Rho Correlation (assess the strength and direction of association between variables), and Binary Logistic Regression to help identify predictors of suicide ideation. Ordinal variables were measured using Likert scales with some recoded into binomial variables for the Regression analysis. Clinical variables predicted suicidal ideation, including fear of failure (OR = 4.17, 95% CI:2.51–6.94; p <.001), sleep disturbance (OR = 3.04, CI:1.67–5.52; p <.001), loneliness (OR = 2.77, CI:1.21–6.32; p <.01), sadness (O = 2.89, CI:1.59–5.32), and loss of interest (OR = 2.60, CI:1.37–4.93). Suicidal thoughts were reported by 48.7% of the student-participants. The Three-Step Theory was partially supported, as students feeling psychological pain but not hopelessness still reported suicidal ideation. Anticipating future global health crises, policy-supported mental health mitigation strategies are critically needed for youth, designed to reduce suicidal ideation, enhance resiliency, and to foster mental skills. Abstract

We have conducted a deep and uniform 1.1 mm survey of the GOODS-N field with AzTEC on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Here we present the first results from this survey including maps, the source catalogue, and 1.1 mm number-counts. The results presented here were obtained from a 245 sq-arcmin region with near uniform coverage to a depth of 0.96-1.16 mJy/beam. Our robust catalogue contains 28 source candidates detected with S/N >= 3.75, only 1-2 of which are expected to be spurious detections. Of these source candidates, 8 are also detected by SCUBA at 850 um in regions where there is good overlap between the two surveys. The major advantage of our survey over that with SCUBA is the uniformity of coverage. We calculate number counts using two different techniques: the first using a frequentist parameter estimation, and the second using a Bayesian method. The two sets of results are in good agreement. We find that the 1.1 mm differential number counts are well described in the 2-6 mJy range by the functional form dN/dS = N' (S'/S) exp(-S/S') with fitted parameters S' = 1.25 +/-0.38 mJy and dN/dS = 300 +/- 90 per mJy per sq-deg at 3 mJy., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. 43. Impact of aerosol and microphysical uncertainty on the evolution of a severe hailstorm

Abstract

Forecasting high impact weather events is a major challenge for numerical weather prediction. Initial condition uncertainty plays an important role but so do potentially uncertainties arising from the representation of subgrid-scale processes, e.g. cloud microphysics.In this project, we investigate the impact of cloud microphysical parameter uncertainties on the forecast of a selected severe convective storm over South-Eastern Germany in 2019. A perturbed parameter ensemble with 112 members has been generated with the ICON model (2-moment cloud microphysics, 1 km grid-spacing). Uncertain parameters in the representation of (i) CCN and INP activation, (ii) diffusional growth of ice and snow, (iii) riming of graupel and hail, as well as (iv) the mass-diameter and mass-fall velocity relations for graupel and hail are considered. To generate systematic parameter variations from the eight-dimensional parameter space a latin hypercube sampling is used. The storm properties, including cloud microphysical structure and surface (hail) precipitation, are determined by identifying storm objects with a storm tracking and watershedding algorithm. Results indicate a large impact of INP concentration on precipitation and surface hail amounts. Furthermore, a strong interaction of INP and CCN concentrations is found with increased sensitivity to INP concentrations at low CCN concentrations. Statistical emulation and variance-based sensitivity analysis further indicate substantial impact of graupel density and ice capacitance on surface precipitation and hail content respectively. Additionally, an initial condition ensemble is simulated.
