4. Evaluation of the Performance and Durability of Self-Cleaning Treatments Based on TiO 2 Nanoparticles Applied to Cement-Based Renders and Boards.

Abstract

Photocatalytic coatings based on TiO2 nanoparticles have been applied to building materials over the past few decades, following encouraging results obtained by many laboratory studies and a few onsite testing campaigns showing their self-cleaning, antimicrobial and depolluting performance. However, these results clearly point out the need for a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of TiO2-based treatments when applied over different substrates and their durability when exposed to an outdoor environment. The present paper investigates the behavior of a nanodispersion of titania nanoparticles applied to cement-based substrates. Cementitious materials are widely used in building façades, roofs, structures, roads and tunnels; hence, any improvement in their performance and/or the introduction of new and unique functionalities have potentially a very high impact on everyday life. A TiO2 nanodispersion was applied by brushing and spraying on three cement-based substrates (a render, a prefabricated board and a painted prefabricated board), investigating its photocatalytic activity. Then, the samples were subjected to two artificially weathering procedures, involving rain washout and UV light exposure, and the changes in terms of the photocatalytic activity and contact angle were measured. The results suggest that the nature of the substrate plays a key role in the performance of the coating and that weathering has a significant impact too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The possibility of providing historic façades with self-cleaning ability in urban polluted environments by means of treatments based on photocatalytic nano-TiO2 dispersions, has recently received growing attention. The potential impact of these treatments for the protection of heritage buildings is evidenced by the high number of papers where the performance of TiO2-based nanocoatings on stone (mainly marble, travertine and limestone), mortar and brick were investigated by laboratory tests. The results seem encouraging, even if the nature of the treatments, the kind of substrate and the methods used for assessing the coatings’ performance differ greatly from one study to the other, thus making the results difficult to compare or even contradictory. Several aqueous titania nanodispersions are already available in the market and some applications of these treatments as trial testing in real heritage buildings are known, but information about their performance (colour change, self-cleaning ability, etc.) on real substrates and in real outdoor environments are still very scarce. In particular, the long-term permanence of TiO2 nanoparticles on outdoor exposed surfaces, also in relation with strategies for promoting the adhesion between nanoparticles and substrate, has also not been fully elucidated yet. In the present paper, some experimental findings collected during last years from on-site and laboratory testing campaigns are reported, as a contribution towards a better assessment of the behaviour of TiO2 treatments when exposed to real and accelerated environmental conditions.

Abstract

The resistance of ethyl silicate-consolidated bricks to sodium sulfate crystallization cycles was evaluated. A commercial ethyl silicate (ES) based product was applied by brushing with 5 or 10 strokes to assess the effect on distribution/accumulation of the consolidant inside the pores. After long-term curing, aimed at making ES-treated samples lose their temporary hydrophobicity, samples were characterized by assessing the penetration depth of consolidants, tensile strength and modifications in open porosity and pore size distribution. Resistance to salt crystallization was evaluated by carrying out sodium sulfate crystallization cycles. The capillary suction of the salt solution was let occur through the untreated surface of cubic samples treated in the upper face, in order to investigate brick response to salts coming from behind the consolidated layer (the situation usually occurring when rising damp is present). Treatment with either 5 or 10 strokes provided protection against salt damage, and no accumulation of salt behind the consolidated layer was observed.

Abstract

The presence of rising damp (usually accompanied by soluble salts) is one of the main concerns in old masonries, as it affects their thermal performance, hinders the inhabitants’ health and threatens the integrity of building materials, hence its elimination is of paramount importance. Monitoring moisture and salts in old masonry is essential for a correct diagnosis of the phenomenon and for controlling the effectiveness of repair systems. Nevertheless, such measurement is not easy, as it should provide quantitative, accurate and reliable data with a minimum destructive action. In the past, a method for monitoring moisture, based on the use of permanent sampling points created in the masonry, and allowing to skip the problems connected to bricks heterogeneity, was proposed by the authors. In this paper, the applicability of this method also for the measurement of soluble salts was investigated and experimental tests were carried out on laboratory-scale masonry models for the validation of the method.

Il volume consiste in un rapporto relativo ai risultati del progetto "Rapporto Integrato e Benchmarking dell'industria italiana nelle piastrelle di ceramica" realizzato da Confindustria Ceramica, con la collaborazione del Centro Ceramico di Bologna, nell'ambito di una convenzione stipulata, ai sensi del DM 16/05/03, con il Ministero dell Sviluppo Economico. L'obiettivo generale del progetto è di tracciare un quadro aggiornato dello stato del settore delle piastrelle di ceramica per pavimento e rivestimento, per quanto concerne alcuni aspetti di grande importanza strategica, ai fini dello sviluppo e della competitività: ambiente, energia, sicurezza-salute, qualità, responsabilità sociale dell'impresa. Il quadro è sviluppato a partire da dati ed informazioni fornite da un campione rappresentativo e significativo delle industrie del settore e, oltre a rappresentare una fotografia aggiornata, costituisce un importante riferimento di valutazione per ognuna delle aziende partecipanti.

Abstract

This chapter deals with the relationships between ceramics and the environment, with particular reference to a specific ceramic sector - floor and wall tile - and to the European ceramic tile industry. In Europe, the Italian ceramic tile industry has a long and significant experience in prevention and reduction of environmental impacts, and can rely on a quantitative knowledge of those impacts, achieved through regular monitoring activities of emissions in force for more than 25 years. Now, however, the whole European ceramic industry, and the ceramic tile sector in particular, is involved in the application of new legislative prescriptions: IPPC Directive (96/61/CE) on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, and, in part, ETS Directive (2003/87/CE), establishing a scheme for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading within the European Community. These prescriptions are, in general, more demanding, in terms of environmental performance, compared to the proceeding laws, and may require additional costs, with possible negative effects on competitiveness.

Abstract

This paper assesses fluorine emissions as atmospheric pollutant originated from the clay-based raw material used in ceramic industries. After a short review on production technology of ceramic products, the main features of fluorine emission during firing processes are outlined. It is demonstrated that the emission rate of fluorine increases with the increasing fluorine content in the raw material and the firing temperature. It’s reported a roundup of methods for emission sampling and analysis of fluorine content both in gaseous emission and in clay raw materials. The fluorine content of clays on average are much the same as the typically found in the Earth’crust, as different studies reported in this work have shown, and hence clays cannot be considered a great source of fluoride. However due to the large amount of clays used, the total emission needs to be under control: detailed review of principal abatment techniques, usually used in the ceramic sector, are described, in order to underline the different abatment efficiency. A very brief summary of diseases caused to animals and plants by an excess of fluoride in water an atmosphere is also presented.

Abstract

Porcelain stoneware tilesare getting a prominent role on the market offering excellent solution either for interiors or for exteriors construction for flooring and coverings. This ceramic material meets the basic requirements to be compatible with different semiconductor deposition technique. Based on these consideration we investigated the possibility of using porcelain stoneware tiles as solar cells substrates for built-integrated photovoltaic applications. The compatibility of the commercial tiles with the solar cell fabrication process was successful proved and a conversion efficiency of more than 4% has been obtained on a small area devices as a preliminary result.

Abstract

Self-cleaning finishing treatments based on the use of TiO2 nanoparticles have been recently proposed for the protection of materials in cultural heritage, with the aim of increasing the durability of these materials in polluted environments. The results on stone seem encouraging, but the experimental tests on different porous materials, such as bricks and renders used in historical buildings, are still extremely limited. In the present paper, the application of water dispersion of titania nanoparticles to the repair renders of the former Del Corso hotel (XVIII cent., Bologna, Italy) was evaluated. The building and its environment were first analysed for assessing the appropriateness of such finishing, then samples of painted renders identical to those provided for in the intervention work were manufactured and treated with the dispersion, both by brushing on the dry paint and by brushing on the wet paint (the latter procedure in order to enhance the particles retention by exploiting the mechanism of fresco paintings). The outcome of the different treatments was investigated mainly to evaluate its compatibility with the substrate and its durability, which could be of interest also for the application of photocatalytic finishing to renders in new constructions. 29. Ceramic Waste as New Precursors for Geopolymerization

Abstract

Geopolymers, and more in general alkali activated materials (AAM), are a new class of materials obtained by alumino-silicates precursors activated by means of alkaline solutions. Indeed, the term geopolymers is usually strictly referred to pure alumino-silicates such as metakaolin as starting material, whereas when the precursors also contain calcium oxide the resulting products are usually defined AAM. Geopolymerization technology can be more easily considered a sustainable process when industrial waste is used as precursors and the consolidation process occurs at room temperature. With these premises, alkali activation may be a very promising technology for the ceramic sector as well as construction industry. In this work, waste coming from bricks production has been used to obtain, at room temperature, geopolymers with different porosity tuning the sodium silicate content in the feed. Microstructure analysis carried out by means of mercury intrusion porosimeter and scanning electron microscopy is reported and discussed.

30. Attività fotocatalitica del biossido di titanio applicato ai materiali da costruzione. Analisi delle prestazioni in funzione della tipologia di supporto e della tecnica di deposizione

Abstract

I materiali fotocatalitici, se opportunamente irradiati con luce di una opportuna lunghezza d'onda, consentono un maggior abbattimento delle sostanze organiche e inorganiche nocive con le quali vengono a contatto. Essi sono in grado inoltre grazie alla loro spiccata idrofilia di conservare inalterato nel tempo il loro aspetto estetico. Il connubio ingegneria e chimica ha creato dunque materiali fotocatalitici contenenti al loro interno particelle di TiO2, il principale fotocatalizzatore in commercio, che, applicati in ambiti urbani ed edilizi come rivestimenti, pitture, rimescolato in pasta di malte o masselli autobloccanti, pitture o piastrelle antisettiche e vetri autopulenti, possono generare effetti positivi in termini sia di antinquinamento che di antibattericità. La tesi parte dalla descrizione delle reazioni chimiche che stanno alla base della fotocatalisi e prosegue descrivendo il fotocatalizzatore più attivo ed efficace fino ad ora scoperto, il TiO2. Nella seconda parte della tesi si citano le principali aziende italiane e mondiali che si sono impegnate nella produzione di materiali fotocatalitici, riportando le loro opere e i loro prodotti. Nella parte terza si vogliono invece fornire le informazioni generali attualmente conosciute sulla minaccia alla salute che può costituire l'utilizzo di materiali nanometrici come il TiO2. Nella parte quarta invece si risponde alle ancora frequenti domande riguardanti l'efficacia del TiO2 nelle applicazioni reali al variare del materiale di supporto, la sua efficacia nel lungo termine, il reale effetto autopulente nell'ambiente reale e nel suo impatto sull'ambiente. Abstract

Il presente lavoro si propone di analizzare il calcestruzzo armato come materiale da costruzione, in particolare focalizzando l’attenzione sulle tecniche di prevenzione di alcuni tipi di degrado con l’utilizzo di trattamenti superficiali. Il calcestruzzo è uno dei materiali da costruzione più utilizzati in quanto presenta molteplici vantaggi come la libertà di forma, il basso costo dei materiali ed il buon comportamento strutturale. Nonostante quanto detto, si possono evidenziare delle criticità inerenti all’utilizzo di questo materiale, il tema centrale di questo lavoro è quello di analizzare nuove tecniche di protezione atte a salvaguardare la struttura da tre diverse tipologie di degrado, valutandone l’effettiva efficacia nell’ottenere quello per cui sono state previste. Nei primi capitoli si esaminerà il calcestruzzo come materiale da costruzione e saranno spiegati i processi che il conglomerato cementizio deve compiere per diventare un materiale indurito e resistente. Nel terzo capitolo si affronteranno, senza entrare nella descrizione puntuale di ciascuna di esse, le diverse cause di degrado del calcestruzzo armato. Infine nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo, verranno esposti tre casi studio: il primo tratta di un tipo di degrado spesso non preso in considerazione ma causante ingenti danni all’aspetto paesaggistico e al patrimonio storico: si analizzano i rivestimenti da poter applicare al calcestruzzo per rendere più semplificato il processo di rimozione dai graffiti. Il secondo si ripromette di analizzare l’efficacia nel proteggere le armature di acciaio dalla corrosione per mezzo un nuovo tipo di pigmenti core-shell poco costosi ma soprattutto ecosostenibili. Infine si porrà lo sguardo su un problema non indifferente ovvero quello della protezione del calcestruzzo armato dalle alte temperature anche in questo caso utilizzando un trattamento superficiale volto a migliorare le performance del calcestruzzo durante l’incendio.
