13. Planetary health indicators for the local level: opportunities and challenges in applying the happy planet index in Victoria, Australia.

Abstract

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, New Urban Agenda and Paris Agreement on Climate Change are blueprints for health promotion action that mandate human health is linked inextricably to the health of the environment. In the Anthropocene, new indicators are required to promote community engagement with, and measurement of, healthy and sustainable wellbeing for people and planet. This study explored the need for a metric such as the Happy Planet Index that explicitly links human health to health of the environment for a local level scale in Australia. The project arose from an international coalition of health promoters advocating for 'planetary health' approaches. Qualitative description methods guided the study design involving key informant interviews (n = 17) and four focus groups (n = 27 participants) with health and/or sustainability academics, practitioners and policy-makers. Document analysis of health and environment indices and policy mandates augmented the analysis. Qualitative content analysis techniques were used to analyse the findings. There was strong interest for a local level composite indicator, such as a rescaled Happy Planet Index (life expectancy × life satisfaction × equity adjustment/ecological footprint) for use at a local level. The value of a composite index was: its ability to promote community engagement with planetary health thinking; an advocacy tool for joint health and sustainability policy; to justify programs on health and environmental co-benefits; and to provide a mechanism for correlative comparisons between local governments and national comparisons. Abstract

This article attempts to examine issues of transference and countertransference in psychotherapy with therapists and clients with disabilities. Common strengths, defenses and limitations of therapists who are disabled are discussed from both a personal and professional perspective. Transference and countertransference reactions are identified in diagnosis, assessment and treatment planning with particular emphasis on expectational systems, strengths and weaknesses. Typical transference reactions of clients who are disabled are often intensified and may include such feelings as anger, resentment, incompetence and comparison with the disabled therapist. Discussion of typical countertransference reactions include guilt and anger, oversheltering, overidentification, overestimation of abilities and codependency with clients.

Abstract

Fostering ways for older residents to be civically engaged is one dimension of an age-friendly community. While research on civic engagement among older adults often focuses on volunteering, this study focuses on advocacy and political involvement as another important form. The Age-Friendly Boston Initiative developed the Senior Civic Academy (SCA) program as a self-advocacy course that simultaneously educates older residents about policy-making processes and engages them in advocacy training to incorporate their voices in local policy and planning. This study details the formative evaluation of the SCA, and utilizes mixed methods to evaluate the program's impact on the participants (N = 49). Lessons learned from the SCA serve as a guide for other communities to develop programs that encourage civic engagement and advocacy among older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In an effort to provide the underground coal mining industry with an understanding of what governs if an explosive is classed as permitted, a preliminary research project was undertaken to investigate the scientific basis of the British Health and Safety Executives Testing Memorandum#2; (TM2). Previous literature indicates that the TM2 standard is empirical and based on comparative testing of the explosive in use at the time, nitroglycerine. Eighty Type I tests were carried out and preliminary findings were that the mechanism that causes ignition is a reflected shockwave which compresses and reheats detonation products. The origin of the reflected pressure wave changed when the primer position was altered within the cannon. With a pressure transducer and pyrometer mounted on the side of the gallery the measurements aided in identifying those maximum pressures and temperatures prior to ignition that are collectively a set of parameters that could be used to identify if an explosive would cause an ignition in the gallery. Additionally numerical modelling was employed to characterise pressure, temperature and velocity profiles within the gallery for blown out and cut off shots. Whilst the pressure and temperature results predicted by the CFD model were 1.5 to 3 times the magnitude of those measured in the field, the modelling results exhibited the behaviour of the shockwaves reflecting off the gallery walls, rebounding, gaining intensity and travelling back towards the centre axis of the gallery. This predicted behaviour reinforced the belief that re-heating of detonation gases by reflected shockwaves is the prime ignition mechanism of the Type I TM2 tests. One hundred and eight deflagration tests were conducted in the Type II cannon. The main finding was that the longer a receptor is subjected to elevated pressures due to confinement the higher the probability of deflagration. Additionally emulsion explosives were found to detonate in the cannon rather than deflagrate raising the question, if the explosive is consumed instantaneously, then isn't the risk of deflagration occurring eliminated’? In reading this thesis it must be noted that all findings are preliminary and many more tests are required to confirm trends and behaviours observed in the testing to date.
