The signing in 1761 by France and Spain of the Tercer Pacto de Familia had a notable impact on the traditional process of the permeation of French culture through Spain. This paper addresses a topic that until now has not been subject to detailed scholarly analysis: the role played by Spanish diplomacy as an active agent in that process of cultural transference. It analyses, in particular, the set of books on political economy and related areas, especially, political science, sent to the Corte de Madrid from the Spanish Embassy in Paris between 1761 and 1774. This period basically coincides with the era during which the embassy was directed by the Conde de Fuentes, who was responsible for managing the pact during these years. Likewise, the paper analyses the fate of these books after their arrival in Spain, focusing in particular on whether they were translated into Spanish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines Franco-Spanish political relations in the period from 1610 to 1625 as represented in Spanish poetry and paintings produced in Spain or in the Spanish theatre of influence. The early seventeenth century was a time of cautious rapprochement and powerful underlying tensions between these nations. Two events of major significance are explored: the assassination of Henry IV of France in May 1610 and the reciprocal Bourbon-Habsburg marriages of 1615. The assassination is reflected in funeral sonnets by Góngora, Quevedo, Lope de Vega, and the Conde de Villamediana, while Henri himself and the marriages were portrayed by Rubens, envoy of the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, Governor of Flanders, in his series on the life of Henri's widow, Marie de Médicis (1625). This article considers the interplay of poetry and politics in these two complementary art forms and their effect on the legacy of Henri IV in Habsburg lands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the evolution of French–Spanish military relations during the Franco dictatorship and the first democratic governments in Spain. After examining the origins, implications and limits of the bilateral general rapprochement, we will focus on French transfers of defence technology and arms to Spain. During the Cold War, Spain was part of the western bloc and the United States of America was the main international partner of the Franco regime. Nevertheless, western European countries, led by France, started to compete with the USA in Spain's political, economic and military external relations. After more than two decades of contact amongst French and Spanish armies, governments and arms companies (mainly state-owned), the most significant results in the military field appeared at the beginning of the 1970s, still during the dictatorship, and were consolidated and expanded during the democratic transition after 1975. French offers of co-manufacturing agreements, expert training and aid for exports, as well as the Spanish wish to approach Europe to counteract US predominance, largely explain the success of French military action in Spain during this period. The article presents a report on a conference on the history of treaties and international commitments in medieval and early modern diplomacy, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft research organization and held in Münster, Germany, from September 17-19, 2014. Topics of discussion included relations between the kings of Aragon, Spain, France, and Castile, Spain, in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Crusades, and European-African diplomacy in 17th- and 18th-century West Africa.

In this article I study the impact of the Treaty of Basel, signed between Spain and France in 1795, on the collective imaginary of the Dominican Spaniards, who suddenly became French citizens. For that purpose, I have analysed a work of the popular poet Manuel Meso Mónica, which reflects the public opinion of the inhabitants of Santo Domingo at that moment and was written soon after the publication of the peace treaty in the colony. The article has three sections: in the introduction I describe the Hispanic–Dominican historical context when the peace of Basel was published in that territory, as well as the theoretical framework of my research; in the second part, after studying Meso Mónica’s background and the morphology of his poem, I analyse the latter to show the consequences of the treaty in Santo Domingo, according to the poet’s testimony; finally, I sum up my conclusions. This article discusses the economic and financial aspects of the war between Spain and Holland in Catalonia, Spain, from 1652-1679. The author gives particular focus to the financing of the war by the Spanish monarchy and comments on the taxation of the citizens of Catalonia to fund the troops. He also considers the conflicts and tensions with France under Louis XIV as well as with Portugal during this time period. The role of the Spanish monarchy as well as the viceroys in Catalonia is also explored.

French European policy has undergone a turning point since François Hollande has been elected the French president in May 2012. A European growth strategy is to ease and complement budgetary consolidation. Considering the public opinion and the fragile domestic power base, the article analyses the European policy leadership of this new executive, and its positioning and choices of strategy, particularly in terms of overcoming the Euro crisis. Leadership differences between France and Germany have increased, and Hollande tries to establish French assertiveness regarding European policies by narrowing the bilateral relations to Italy and Spain. A consistent French leadership in Europe and prolific French-German relations will be dependent on the successful reconstruction of economic competitiveness and fiscal sustainability of the French government. The article discusses the history of Spanish refugees in France in 1939 as a result of the fall of Cataluña in the Spanish Civil War, and the collective memory of descendants of these refugees and societies related to them in France. Topics discussed include concepts of ethnography, historiography, and historicity in relation to the history of these refugees, background information on relations between France and Spain during this period, and the history of absorption of the Spanish refugees into the southwestern region of France.
