Search

A historical planet-search on a sample of 1647 nearby southern main sequence stars has been ongoing since 1998 with the CORALIE spectrograph at La Silla Observatory, with a backup subprogram dedicated to the monitoring of binary stars. We review 25 years of CORALIE measurements and search for Doppler signals consistent with stellar or brown dwarf companions to produce an updated catalog of both known and previously unpublished binary stars in the planet-search sample, assessing the binarity fraction of the stellar population and providing perspective for more precise planet-search in the binary sample. We perform new analysis on the CORALIE planet-search sample radial velocity measurements, searching for stellar companions and obtaining orbital solutions for both known and new binary systems. We perform simultaneous radial velocity and proper motion anomaly fits on the subset of these systems for which Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry measurements are available, obtaining accurate estimates of true mass for the companions. We find 218 stars in the CORALIE sample to have at least one stellar companion, 130 of which are not yet published in the literature and for which we present orbital solutions. The use of proper motion anomaly allow us to derive true masses for the stellar companions in 132 systems, which we additionally use to estimate stability regions for possible planetary companions on circumprimary or circumbinary orbits. Finally, we produce detection limit maps for each star in the sample and obtain occurrence rates of $0.43^{+0.23}_{-0.11}\%$ and $12.69^{+0.87}_{-0.77}\%$ for brown dwarf and stellar companions respectively in the CORALIE sample., Astronomy & Astrophysics, 674, ISSN:0004-6361, ISSN:1432-0746

When generating text from probabilistic models, the chosen decoding strategy has a profound effect on the resulting text. Yet the properties elicited by various decoding strategies do not always transfer across natural language generation tasks. For example, while mode-seeking methods like beam search perform remarkably well for machine translation, they have been observed to lead to incoherent and repetitive text in story generation. Despite such observations, the effectiveness of decoding strategies is often assessed with respect to only a single task. This work -- in contrast -- provides a comprehensive analysis of the interaction between language generation tasks and decoding strategies. Specifically, we measure changes in attributes of generated text as a function of both decoding strategy and task using human and automatic evaluation. Our results reveal both previously-observed and surprising findings. The design of quantum protocols for secure key generation poses many challenges: On the one hand, they need to be practical concerning experimental realisations. On the other hand, their theoretical description must be simple enough to allow for a security proof against all possible attacks. Often, these two requirements are in conflict with each other, and the differential phase shift (DPS) QKD protocol is an excellent example of this: It is designed to be implementable with current optical telecommunication technology, which, for this protocol, comes at the cost that many standard security proof techniques do not apply to it. In this work, we give the first full security proof of DPS QKD against general attacks, including finite-size effects. The proof combines techniques from quantum information theory, quantum optics, and relativity. We first give a security proof of a QKD protocol whose security stems from relativistic constraints. We then show that DPS QKD can be formulated as an instance of the relativistic protocol. In addition, we show that coherent attacks on the DPS protocol are, in fact, stronger than collective attacks.

Sensing the fluid flow around an arbitrary geometry entails extrapolating from the physical quantities perceived at its surface in order to reconstruct the features of the surrounding fluid. This is a challenging inverse problem, yet one that if solved could have a significant impact on many engineering applications. The exploitation of such an inverse logic has gained interest in recent years with the advent of widely available cheap but capable MEMS-based sensors. When combined with novel data-driven methods, these sensors may allow for flow reconstruction around immersed structures, benefiting applications such as unmanned airborne/underwater vehicle path planning or control and structural health monitoring of wind turbine blades. In this work, we train deep reversible Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to perform flow sensing (flow reconstruction) around two-dimensional aerodynamic shapes: airfoils. Motivated by recent work, which has shown that GNNs can be powerful alternatives to mesh-based forward physics simulators, we implement a Message-Passing Neural Network to simultaneously reconstruct both the pressure and velocity fields surrounding simulated airfoils based on their surface pressure distributions, whilst additionally gathering useful farfield properties in the form of context vectors. We generate a unique dataset of Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations by simulating random, yet meaningful combinations of input boundary conditions and airfoil shapes. We show that despite the challenges associated with reconstructing the flow around arbitrary airfoil geometries in high Reynolds turbulent inflow conditions, our framework is able to generalize well to unseen cases.

This paper addresses the problem of finite horizon constrained robust optimal control for nonlinear systems subject to norm-bounded disturbances. To this end, the underlying uncertain nonlinear system is decomposed based on a first-order Taylor series expansion into a nominal system and an error (deviation) described as an uncertain linear time-varying system. This decomposition allows us to leverage system level synthesis to optimize an affine error feedback while planning the nominal trajectory and ensuring robust constraint satisfaction for the nonlinear system. The proposed approach thereby results in a less conservative planning compared with state-of-the-art techniques. A tailored sequential quadratic programming strategy is proposed to solve the resulting nonlinear program efficiently. Searching for similar genomic sequences is an essential and fundamental step in biomedical research and an overwhelming majority of genomic analyses. State-of-the-art computational methods performing such comparisons fail to cope with the exponential growth of genomic sequencing data. We introduce the concept of sparsified genomics where we systematically exclude a large number of bases from genomic sequences and enable much faster and more memory-efficient processing of the sparsified, shorter genomic sequences, while providing similar or even higher accuracy compared to processing non-sparsified sequences. Sparsified genomics provides significant benefits to many genomic analyses and has broad applicability. We show that sparsifying genomic sequences greatly accelerates the state-of-the-art read mapper (minimap2) by 2.57-5.38x, 1.13-2.78x, and 3.52-6.28x using real Illumina, HiFi, and ONT reads, respectively, while providing up to 2.1x smaller memory footprint, 2x smaller index size, and more truly detected small and structural variations compared to minimap2. Sparsifying genomic sequences makes containment search through very large genomes and very large databases 72.7-75.88x faster and 723.3x more storage-efficient than searching through non-sparsified genomic sequences (with CMash and KMC3). Sparsifying genomic sequences enables robust microbiome discovery by providing 54.15-61.88x faster and 720x more storage-efficient taxonomic profiling of metagenomic samples over the state-of-art tool (Metalign). Spurious correlations are everywhere. While humans often do not perceive them, neural networks are notorious for learning unwanted associations, also known as biases, instead of the underlying decision rule. As a result, practitioners are often unaware of the biased decision-making of their classifiers. Such a biased model based on spurious correlations might not generalize to unobserved data, leading to unintended, adverse consequences. We propose Signal is Harder (SiH), a variational-autoencoder-based method that simultaneously trains a biased and unbiased classifier using a novel, disentangling reweighting scheme inspired by the focal loss. Using the unbiased classifier, SiH matches or improves upon the performance of state-of-the-art debiasing methods. It is natural to expect a complete physical theory to have the ability to consistently model agents as physical systems of the theory. In [Nat. Comms. 9, 3711 (2018)], Frauchiger and Renner (FR) claim to show that when agents in quantum theory reason about each other's knowledge in a certain Wigner's friend scenario, they arrive at a logical contradiction. In light of this, Renner often poses the challenge: provide a set of reasoning rules that can be used to program quantum computers that may act as agents, which are (a) logically consistent (b) generalise to arbitrary Wigner's friend scenarios (c) efficiently programmable and (d) consistent with the temporal order of the protocol. Here we develop a general framework where we show that every logical Wigner's friend scenario (LWFS) can be mapped to a single temporally ordered quantum circuit, which allows agents in any LWFS to reason in a way that meets all four criteria of the challenge. Importantly, our framework achieves this general resolution without modifying classical logic or unitary quantum evolution or the Born rule, while allowing agents' perspectives to be fundamentally subjective. We analyse the FR protocol in detail, showing how the apparent paradox is resolved there. We show that apparent logical contradictions in any LWFS only arise when ignoring the choice of Heisenberg cut in scenarios where this choice does matter, and taking this dependence into account will always resolve the apparent paradox. Our results establish that universal applicability of quantum theory does not pose any threat to multi-agent logical reasoning and we discuss the implications of these results for FR's no-go theorem. Many applications, e.g., in shared mobility, require coordinating a large number of agents. Mean-field reinforcement learning addresses the resulting scalability challenge by optimizing the policy of a representative agent. In this paper, we address an important generalization where there exist global constraints on the distribution of agents (e.g., requiring capacity constraints or minimum coverage requirements to be met). We propose Safe-$\text{M}^3$-UCRL, the first model-based algorithm that attains safe policies even in the case of unknown transition dynamics. As a key ingredient, it uses epistemic uncertainty in the transition model within a log-barrier approach to ensure pessimistic constraints satisfaction with high probability. We showcase Safe-$\text{M}^3$-UCRL on the vehicle repositioning problem faced by many shared mobility operators and evaluate its performance through simulations built on Shenzhen taxi trajectory data. We provide a framework consisting of tools and metatheorems for the end-to-end verification of security protocols, which bridges the gap between automated protocol verification and code-level proofs. We automatically translate a Tamarin protocol model into a set of I/O specifications expressed in separation logic. Each such specification describes a protocol role's intended I/O behavior against which the role's implementation is then verified. Our soundness result guarantees that the verified implementation inherits all security (trace) properties proved for the Tamarin model. Our framework thus enables us to leverage the substantial body of prior verification work in Tamarin to verify new and existing implementations. The possibility to use any separation logic code verifier provides flexibility regarding the target language. To validate our approach and show that it scales to real-world protocols, we verify a substantial part of the official Go implementation of the WireGuard VPN key exchange protocol.

The study of complex political phenomena such as parties’ polarization calls for mathematical models of political systems. In this paper, we aim at modeling the time evolution of a political system whereby various parties selfishly interact to maximize their political success (e.g., number of votes). More specifically, we identify the ideology of a party as a probability distribution over a one-dimensional real-valued ideology space, and we formulate a gradient flow in the probability space (also called a Wasserstein gradient flow) to study its temporal evolution. We characterize the equilibria of the arising dynamic system, and establish local convergence under mild assumptions. We calibrate and validate our model with real-world time-series data of the time evolution of the ideologies of the Republican and Democratic parties in the US Congress. Our framework allows to rigorously reason about various political effects such as parties’ polarization and homogeneity. The conventional virtual-to-physical address mapping scheme enables a virtual address to flexibly map to any physical address. This flexibility necessitates large data structures to store virtual-to-physical mappings, which incurs significantly high address translation latency and translation-induced interference in the memory hierarchy, especially in data-intensive workloads. Restricting the address mapping so that a virtual address can map to only a specific set of physical addresses can significantly reduce the overheads associated with the conventional address translation by making use of compact and more efficient translation structures. However, restricting the address mapping flexibility across the entire main memory severely limits data sharing across different processes and increases memory under-utilization. In this work, we propose Utopia, a new hybrid virtual-to-physical address mapping scheme that allows both flexible and restrictive hash-based address mapping schemes to co-exist in a system. The key idea of Utopia is to manage the physical memory using two types of physical memory segments: restrictive segments and flexible segments. A restrictive segment uses a restrictive, hash-based address mapping scheme to map the virtual addresses to only a specific set of physical addresses and enable faster address translation using compact and efficient translation structures. A flexible segment is similar to the conventional address mapping scheme and provides full virtual-to-physical address mapping flexibility. By mapping data to a restrictive segment, Utopia enables faster address translation with lower translation-induced interference whenever a flexible address mapping is not necessary. Our evaluation using 11 data-intensive workloads shows that Utopia improves performance by 32% on average in single-core workloads over the baseline four-level radix-tree page table design., arXiv

Security protocols are essential building blocks of modern IT systems. Subtle flaws in their design or implementation may compromise the security of entire systems. It is, thus, important to prove the absence of such flaws through formal verification. Much existing work focuses on the verification of protocol *models*, which is not sufficient to show that their *implementations* are actually secure. Verification techniques for protocol implementations (e.g., via code generation or model extraction) typically impose severe restrictions on the used programming language and code design, which may lead to sub-optimal implementations. In this paper, we present a methodology for the modular verification of strong security properties directly on the level of the protocol implementations. Our methodology leverages state-of-the-art verification logics and tools to support a wide range of implementations and programming languages. We demonstrate its effectiveness by verifying memory safety and security of Go implementations of the Needham-Schroeder-Lowe and WireGuard protocols, including forward secrecy and injective agreement for WireGuard. We derive the kernels and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure counterterms for the one-loop bispectrum of dark matter and of biased tracers in real and redshift space. This requires the expansion of biased tracers up to fourth order in fluctuations. In the process, we encounter several subtleties related to renormalization. One is the fact that, in renormalizing the momentum, a local counterterm contributes non-locally. A second subtlety is related to the renormalization of local products of the velocity fields, which need to be expressed in terms of the renormalized velocity in order to preserve Galilean symmetry. We check that the counterterms we identify are necessary and sufficient to renormalize the one-loop bispectrum at leading and subleading order in the derivative expansion. We propose to introduce additional control in levitated optomechanics by trapping a meta-atom, i.e. a subwavelength and high-permittivity dielectric particle supporting Mie resonances. In particular, we theoretically demonstrate that optical levitation and center-of-mass ground-state cooling of silicon nanoparticles in vacuum is not only experimentally feasible but it offers enhanced performance over widely used silica particles, in terms of both trap frequency and trap depth. Moreover, we show that, by adjusting the detuning of the trapping laser with respect to the particle's resonance, the sign of the polarizability becomes negative, enabling levitation in the minimum of laser intensity e.g. at the nodes of a standing wave. The latter opens the door to trapping nanoparticles in the optical near-field combining red and blue-detuned frequencies, in analogy to two-level atoms, which is of interest for generating strong coupling to photonic nanostructures and short-distance force sensing.

Partitioning an image into superpixels based on the similarity of pixels with respect to features such as colour or spatial location can significantly reduce data complexity and improve subsequent image processing tasks. Initial algorithms for unsupervised superpixel generation solely relied on local cues without prioritizing significant edges over arbitrary ones. On the other hand, more recent methods based on unsupervised deep learning either fail to properly address the trade-off between superpixel edge adherence and compactness or lack control over the generated number of superpixels. By using random images with strong spatial correlation as input, \ie, blurred noise images, in a non-convolutional image decoder we can reduce the expected number of contrasts and enforce smooth, connected edges in the reconstructed image. We generate edge-sparse pixel embeddings by encoding additional spatial information into the piece-wise smooth activation maps from the decoder's last hidden layer and use a standard clustering algorithm to extract high quality superpixels. Reconfigurable metasurfaces offer great promises to enhance photonics technology by combining integration with improved functionalities. Recently, reconfigurability in otherwise static metasurfaces has been achieved by modifying the electric permittivity of the meta-atoms themselves or their immediate surrounding. Yet, it remains challenging to achieve significant and fast tunability without increasing bulkiness. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-thin tunable metalens whose focal distance can be changed through optomechanical control with moderate continuous wave intensities. We provide an overview of recent developments and future directions in the RowHammer vulnerability that plagues modern DRAM (Dynamic Random Memory Access) chips, which are used in almost all computing systems as main memory. RowHammer is the phenomenon in which repeatedly accessing a row in a real DRAM chip causes bitflips (i.e., data corruption) in physically nearby rows. This phenomenon leads to a serious and widespread system security vulnerability, as many works since the original RowHammer paper in 2014 have shown. Recent analysis of the RowHammer phenomenon reveals that the problem is getting much worse as DRAM technology scaling continues: newer DRAM chips are fundamentally more vulnerable to RowHammer at the device and circuit levels. Deeper analysis of RowHammer shows that there are many dimensions to the problem as the vulnerability is sensitive to many variables, including environmental conditions (temperature \& voltage), process variation, stored data patterns, as well as memory access patterns and memory control policies. As such, it has proven difficult to devise fully-secure and very efficient (i.e., low-overhead in performance, energy, area) protection mechanisms against RowHammer and attempts made by DRAM manufacturers have been shown to lack security guarantees. After reviewing various recent developments in exploiting, understanding, and mitigating RowHammer, we discuss future directions that we believe are critical for solving the RowHammer problem. We argue for two major directions to amplify research and development efforts in: 1) building a much deeper understanding of the problem and its many dimensions, in both cutting-edge DRAM chips and computing systems deployed in the field, and 2) the design and development of extremely efficient and fully-secure solutions via system-memory cooperation., Invited paper to appear in ASPDAC 2023

To understand and improve DRAM performance, reliability, security and energy efficiency, prior works study characteristics of commodity DRAM chips. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art open source infrastructures capable of conducting such studies are obsolete, poorly supported, or difficult to use, or their inflexibility limit the types of studies they can conduct. We propose DRAM Bender, a new FPGA-based infrastructure that enables experimental studies on state-of-the-art DRAM chips. DRAM Bender offers three key features at the same time. First, DRAM Bender enables directly interfacing with a DRAM chip through its low-level interface. This allows users to issue DRAM commands in arbitrary order and with finer-grained time intervals compared to other open source infrastructures. Second, DRAM Bender exposes easy-to-use C++ and Python programming interfaces, allowing users to quickly and easily develop different types of DRAM experiments. Third, DRAM Bender is easily extensible. The modular design of DRAM Bender allows extending it to (i) support existing and emerging DRAM interfaces, and (ii) run on new commercial or custom FPGA boards with little effort. To demonstrate that DRAM Bender is a versatile infrastructure, we conduct three case studies, two of which lead to new observations about the DRAM RowHammer vulnerability. In particular, we show that data patterns supported by DRAM Bender uncovers a larger set of bit-flips on a victim row compared to the data patterns commonly used by prior work. We demonstrate the extensibility of DRAM Bender by implementing it on five different FPGAs with DDR4 and DDR3 support. Resistive Random-Access Memory (RRAM) is well-suited to accelerate neural network (NN) workloads as RRAM-based Processing-in-Memory (PIM) architectures natively support highly-parallel multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations that form the backbone of most NN workloads. Unfortunately, NN workloads such as transformers require support for non-MAC operations (e.g., softmax) that RRAM cannot provide natively. Consequently, state-of-the-art works either integrate additional digital logic circuits to support the non-MAC operations or offload the non-MAC operations to CPU/GPU, resulting in significant performance and energy efficiency overheads due to data movement. In this work, we propose NEON, a novel compiler optimization to enable the end-to-end execution of the NN workload in RRAM. The key idea of NEON is to transform each non-MAC operation into a lightweight yet highly-accurate neural network. Utilizing neural networks to approximate the non-MAC operations provides two advantages: 1) We can exploit the key strength of RRAM, i.e., highly-parallel MAC operation, to flexibly and efficiently execute non-MAC operations in memory. 2) We can simplify RRAM's microarchitecture by eliminating the additional digital logic circuits while reducing the data movement overheads. Acceleration of the non-MAC operations in memory enables NEON to achieve a 2.28x speedup compared to an idealized digital logic-based RRAM. Recent years have seen a paradigm shift in NLP towards using pretrained language models ({PLM}) for a wide range of tasks. However, there are many difficult design decisions to represent structures (e.g. tagged text, coreference chains) in a way such that they can be captured by PLMs. Prior work on structured prediction with PLMs typically flattens the structured output into a sequence, which limits the quality of structural information being learned and leads to inferior performance compared to classic discriminative models. In this work, we describe an approach to model structures as sequences of actions in an autoregressive manner with PLMs, allowing in-structure dependencies to be learned without any loss. Our approach achieves the new state-of-the-art on all the structured prediction tasks we looked at, namely, named entity recognition, end-to-end relation extraction, and coreference resolution., EMNLP 2022 (findings)

The memory controller is in charge of managing DRAM maintenance operations (e.g., refresh, RowHammer protection, memory scrubbing) in current DRAM chips. Implementing new maintenance operations often necessitates modifications in the DRAM interface, memory controller, and potentially other system components. Such modifications are only possible with a new DRAM standard, which takes a long time to develop, leading to slow progress in DRAM systems. In this paper, our goal is to 1) ease the process of enabling new DRAM maintenance operations and 2) enable more efficient in-DRAM maintenance operations. Our idea is to set the memory controller free from managing DRAM maintenance. To this end, we propose Self-Managing DRAM (SMD), a new low-cost DRAM architecture that enables implementing new in-DRAM maintenance mechanisms (or modifying old ones) with no further changes in the DRAM interface, memory controller, or other system components. We use SMD to implement new in-DRAM maintenance mechanisms for three use cases: 1) periodic refresh, 2) RowHammer protection, and 3) memory scrubbing. Our evaluations show that SMD-based maintenance operations significantly improve the system performance and energy efficiency while providing higher reliability compared to conventional DDR4 DRAM. A combination of SMD-based maintenance mechanisms that perform refresh, RowHammer protection, and memory scrubbing achieve 7.6% speedup and consume 5.2% less DRAM energy on average across 20 memory-intensive four-core workloads. In cellular networks, attacks on the communication link between a mobile device and the core network significantly impact privacy and availability. Up until now, fake base stations have been required to execute such attacks. Since they require a continuously high output power to attract victims, they are limited in range and can be easily detected both by operators and dedicated apps on users' smartphones. This paper introduces AdaptOver -- a MITM attack system designed for cellular networks, specifically for LTE and 5G-NSA. AdaptOver allows an adversary to decode, overshadow (replace) and inject arbitrary messages over the air in either direction between the network and the mobile device. Using overshadowing, AdaptOver can cause a persistent ($\geq$ 12h) DoS or a privacy leak by triggering a UE to transmit its persistent identifier (IMSI) in plain text. These attacks can be launched against all users within a cell or specifically target a victim based on its phone number. We implement AdaptOver using a software-defined radio and a low-cost amplification setup. We demonstrate the effects and practicality of the attacks on a live operational LTE and 5G-NSA network with a wide range of smartphones. Our experiments show that AdaptOver can launch an attack on a victim more than 3.8km away from the attacker. Given its practicability and efficiency, AdaptOver shows that existing countermeasures that are focused on fake base stations are no longer sufficient, marking a paradigm shift for designing security mechanisms in cellular networks., arXiv

We give a comprehensive characterization of the computational power of shallow quantum circuits combined with classical computation. Specifically, for classes of search problems, we show that the following statements hold, relative to a random oracle: (a) $\mathsf{BPP}^{\mathsf{QNC}^{\mathsf{BPP}}} \neq \mathsf{BQP}$. This refutes Jozsa's conjecture [QIP 05] in the random oracle model. As a result, this gives the first instantiatable separation between the classes by replacing the oracle with a cryptographic hash function, yielding a resolution to one of Aaronson's ten semi-grand challenges in quantum computing. Predicting the next visited location of an individual is a key problem in human mobility analysis, as it is required for the personalization and optimization of sustainable transport options. Here, we propose a transformer decoder-based neural network to predict the next location an individual will visit based on historical locations, time, and travel modes, which are behaviour dimensions often overlooked in previous work. In particular, the prediction of the next travel mode is designed as an auxiliary task to help guide the network's learning. For evaluation, we apply this approach to two large-scale and long-term GPS tracking datasets involving more than 600 individuals. Our experiments show that the proposed method significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art next location prediction methods by a large margin (8.05% and 5.60% relative increase in F1-score for the two datasets, respectively). We conduct an extensive ablation study that quantifies the influence of considering temporal features, travel mode information, and the auxiliary task on the prediction results. Moreover, we experimentally determine the performance upper bound when including the next mode prediction in our model. Finally, our analysis indicates that the performance of location prediction varies significantly with the chosen next travel mode by the individual. These results show potential for a more systematic consideration of additional dimensions of travel behaviour in human mobility prediction tasks. Causal inference methods for treatment effect estimation usually assume independent experimental units. However, this assumption is often questionable because experimental units may interact. We develop augmented inverse probability weighting (AIPW) for estimation and inference of causal treatment effects on dependent observational data. Our framework covers very general cases of spillover effects induced by units interacting in networks. We use plugin machine learning to estimate infinite-dimensional nuisance components leading to a consistent treatment effect estimator that converges at the parametric rate and asymptotically follows a Gaussian distribution. We apply our AIPW method to the Swiss StudentLife Study data to investigate the effect of hours spent studying on exam performance accounting for the students' social network.

In this expository note, we discuss an early partial coloring result of B. Kashin [C. R. Acad. Bulgare Sci., 1985]. Although this result only implies Spencer's six standard deviations [Trans. Amer. Precise manipulation of fluids and objects on the micro scale is seldom a simple task, but nevertheless crucial for many applications in life sciences and chemical engineering. We present a microfluidic chip fabricated in silicon-glass, featuring one or several pairs of acoustically excited sharp edges at side channels that drive a pumping flow throughout the chip and produce a strong mixing flow in their vicinity. The chip is simultaneously capable of focusing cells and microparticles that are suspended in the flow. The multifunctional micropump provides a continuous flow across a wide range of excitation frequencies (80kHz-2MHz), with flow rates ranging from nL/min to $μ$L/min, depending on the excitation parameters. In the low-voltage regime, the flow rate depends quadratically on the voltage applied to the piezoelectric transducer, making the pump programmable. The behaviour in the system is elucidated with finite element method simulations, which are in good agreement with experimentally observed behaviour. The acoustic radiation force arising due to a fluidic channel resonance is responsible for the focusing of cells and microparticles, while the streaming produced by the pair of sharp edges generates the pumping and the mixing flow. If cell focusing is detrimental for a certain application, it can also be avoided by exciting the system away from the resonance frequency of the fluidic channel. The device, with its unique bundle of functionalities, displays great potential for various bio-chemical applications.

There are two major sources of inefficiency in computing systems that use modern DRAM devices as main memory. First, due to coarse-grained data transfers (size of a cache block, usually 64B between the DRAM and the memory controller, systems waste energy on transferring data that is not used. Second, due to coarse-grained DRAM row activation, systems waste energy by activating DRAM cells that are unused in many workloads where spatial locality is lower than the large row size (usually 8-16KB). We propose Sectored DRAM, a new, low-overhead DRAM substrate that alleviates the two inefficiencies, by enabling fine-grained DRAM access and activation. To efficiently retrieve only the useful data from DRAM, Sectored DRAM exploits the observation that many cache blocks are not fully utilized in many workloads due to poor spatial locality. Sectored DRAM predicts the words in a cache block that will likely be accessed during the cache block's cache residency and: (i) transfers only the predicted words on the memory channel, as opposed to transferring the entire cache block, by dynamically tailoring the DRAM data transfer size for the workload and (ii) activates a smaller set of cells that contain the predicted words, as opposed to activating the entire DRAM row, by carefully operating physically isolated portions of DRAM rows (MATs). Compared to prior work in fine-grained DRAM, Sectored DRAM greatly reduces DRAM energy consumption, does not reduce DRAM throughput, and can be implemented with low hardware cost. We evaluate Sectored DRAM using 41 workloads from widely-used benchmark suites. Sectored DRAM reduces the DRAM energy consumption of highly-memory-intensive workloads by up to (on average) 33% (20%) while improving their performance by 17% on average. Model Predictive Control (MPC) schemes have proven their efficiency in controlling high degree-of-freedom (DoF) complex robotic systems. However, they come at a high computational cost and an update rate of about tens of hertz. This relatively slow update rate hinders the possibility of stable haptic teleoperation of such systems since the slow feedback loops can cause instabilities and loss of transparency to the operator. This work presents a novel framework for transparent teleoperation of MPC-controlled complex robotic systems. In particular, we employ a feedback MPC approach and exploit its structure to account for the operator input at a fast rate which is independent of the update rate of the MPC loop itself. We demonstrate our framework on a mobile manipulator platform and show that it significantly improves haptic teleoperation's transparency and stability. We also highlight that the proposed feedback structure is constraint satisfactory and does not violate any constraints defined in the optimal control problem. Profile hidden Markov models (pHMMs) are widely used in many bioinformatics applications to accurately identify similarities between biological sequences (e.g., DNA or protein sequences). PHMMs use a commonly-adopted and highly-accurate method, called the Baum-Welch algorithm, to calculate these similarities. However, the Baum-Welch algorithm is computationally expensive, and existing works provide either software- or hardware-only solutions for a fixed pHMM design. When we analyze the state-of-the-art works, we find that there is a pressing need for a flexible, high-performant, and energy-efficient hardware-software co-design to efficiently and effectively solve all the major inefficiencies in the Baum-Welch algorithm for pHMMs. We propose ApHMM, the first flexible acceleration framework that can significantly reduce computational and energy overheads of the Baum-Welch algorithm for pHMMs. ApHMM leverages hardware-software co-design to solve the major inefficiencies in the Baum-Welch algorithm by 1) designing a flexible hardware to support different pHMMs designs, 2) exploiting the predictable data dependency pattern in an on-chip memory with memoization techniques, 3) quickly eliminating negligible computations with a hardware-based filter, and 4) minimizing the redundant computations. We implement our 1) hardware-software optimizations on a specialized hardware and 2) software optimizations for GPUs to provide the first flexible Baum-Welch accelerator for pHMMs. ApHMM provides significant speedups of 15.55x-260.03x, 1.83x-5.34x, and 27.97x compared to CPU, GPU, and FPGA implementations of the Baum-Welch algorithm, respectively. ApHMM outperforms the state-of-the-art CPU implementations of three important bioinformatics applications, 1) error correction, 2) protein family search, and 3) multiple sequence alignment, by 1.29x-59.94x, 1.03x-1.75x, and 1.03x-1.95x, respectively., arXiv

Training machine learning (ML) algorithms is a computationally intensive process, which is frequently memory-bound due to repeatedly accessing large training datasets. As a result, processor-centric systems (e.g., CPU, GPU) suffer from costly data movement between memory units and processing units, which consumes large amounts of energy and execution cycles. Memory-centric computing systems, i.e., with processing-in-memory (PIM) capabilities, can alleviate this data movement bottleneck. Our goal is to understand the potential of modern general-purpose PIM architectures to accelerate ML training. To do so, we (1) implement several representative classic ML algorithms (namely, linear regression, logistic regression, decision tree, K-Means clustering) on a real-world general-purpose PIM architecture, (2) rigorously evaluate and characterize them in terms of accuracy, performance and scaling, and (3) compare to their counterpart implementations on CPU and GPU. Our evaluation on a real memory-centric computing system with more than 2500 PIM cores shows that general-purpose PIM architectures can greatly accelerate memory-bound ML workloads, when the necessary operations and datatypes are natively supported by PIM hardware. For example, our PIM implementation of decision tree is $27\times$ faster than a state-of-the-art CPU version on an 8-core Intel Xeon, and $1.34\times$ faster than a state-of-the-art GPU version on an NVIDIA A100. Our K-Means clustering on PIM is $2.8\times$ and $3.2\times$ than state-of-the-art CPU and GPU versions, respectively. To our knowledge, our work is the first one to evaluate ML training on a real-world PIM architecture. This paper presents karma mechanisms, a novel approach to the repeated allocation of a scarce resource among competing agents over an infinite time. Examples of such resource allocation problems include deciding which trip requests to serve in a ride-hailing platform during peak demand, granting the right of way in intersections, or admitting internet content to a fast channel for improved quality of service. We study a simplified yet insightful formulation of these problems where at every time two agents from a large population get randomly matched to compete over the resource. The intuitive interpretation of a karma mechanism is "If I give in now, I will be rewarded in the future." Agents compete in an auction-like setting where they bid units of karma, which circulates directly among them and is self-contained in the system. We demonstrate that this allows a society of self-interested agents to achieve high levels of efficiency without resorting to a (possibly problematic) monetary pricing of the resource. We model karma mechanisms as dynamic population games, in which agents have private states - their urgency to acquire the resource and how much karma they have - that vary in time based on their strategic decisions. We adopt the stationary Nash equilibrium as the solution concept and prove its existence. We then analyze the performance at the stationary Nash equilibrium numerically. For the case where the agents have homogeneous preferences, we compare different mechanism design choices which allow to strike trade-offs between efficiency and fairness metrics, showing how it is possible to achieve an efficient and ex-post fair allocation when the agents are future aware. Finally, we test the robustness of the mechanisms against heterogeneity in the urgency processes and the future awareness of the agents and propose remedies to some of the observed phenomena via karma redistribution.

Without a complete theory of quantum gravity, the question of how quantum fields and quantum particles behave in a superposition of spacetimes seems beyond the reach of theoretical and experimental investigations. Here we use an extension of the quantum reference frame formalism to address this question for the Klein-Gordon field residing on a superposition of conformally equivalent metrics. Based on the group structure of ``quantum conformal transformations'', we construct an explicit quantum operator that can map states describing a quantum field on a superposition of spacetimes to states representing a quantum field with a superposition of masses on a Minkowski background. This constitutes an extended symmetry principle, namely invariance under quantum conformal transformations. The latter allows to build an understanding of superpositions of diffeomorphically non-equivalent spacetimes by relating them to a more intuitive superposition of quantum fields on curved spacetime. Furthermore, it can be used to import the phenomenon of particle production in curved spacetime to its conformally equivalent counterpart, thus revealing new features in modified Minkowski spacetime.

Many important learning algorithms, such as stochastic gradient methods, are often deployed to solve nonlinear problems on Riemannian manifolds. Motivated by these applications, we propose a family of Riemannian algorithms generalizing and extending the seminal stochastic approximation framework of Robbins and Monro. Compared to their Euclidean counterparts, Riemannian iterative algorithms are much less understood due to the lack of a global linear structure on the manifold. We overcome this difficulty by introducing an extended Fermi coordinate frame which allows us to map the asymptotic behavior of the proposed Riemannian Robbins-Monro (RRM) class of algorithms to that of an associated deterministic dynamical system under very mild assumptions on the underlying manifold. In so doing, we provide a general template of almost sure convergence results that mirrors and extends the existing theory for Euclidean Robbins-Monro schemes, albeit with a significantly more involved analysis that requires a number of new geometric ingredients. We showcase the flexibility of the proposed RRM framework by using it to establish the convergence of a retraction-based analogue of the popular optimistic / extra-gradient methods for solving minimization problems and games, and we provide a unified treatment for their convergence., arXiv

We demonstrate how to use persistent homology for cosmological parameter inference in a tomographic cosmic shear survey. We obtain the first cosmological parameter constraints from persistent homology by applying our method to the first-year data of the Dark Energy Survey. To obtain these constraints, we analyse the topological structure of the matter distribution by extracting persistence diagrams from signal-to-noise maps of aperture masses. This presents a natural extension to the widely used peak count statistics. Extracting the persistence diagrams from the cosmo-SLICS, a suite of $N$-body simulations with variable cosmological parameters, we interpolate the signal using Gaussian Processes and marginalise over the most relevant systematic effects, including intrinsic alignments and baryonic effects. We find for the structure growth parameter $S_8=0.747^{+0.025}_{-0.031}$, which is in full agreement with other late-time probes. We also constrain the intrinsic alignment parameter to $A=1.54\pm 0.52$, ruling out the case of no intrinsic alignments at a $3σ$-level., arXiv

A growth in data volume, combined with increasing demand for real-time analysis (using the most recent data), has resulted in the emergence of database systems that concurrently support transactions and data analytics. These hybrid transactional and analytical processing (HTAP) database systems can support real-time data analysis without the high costs of synchronizing across separate single-purpose databases. Unfortunately, for many applications that perform a high rate of data updates, state-of-the-art HTAP systems incur significant losses in transactional (up to 74.6%) and/or analytical (up to 49.8%) throughput compared to performing only transactional or only analytical queries in isolation, due to (1) data movement between the CPU and memory, (2) data update propagation from transactional to analytical workloads, and (3) the cost to maintain a consistent view of data across the system. We propose Polynesia, a hardware-software co-designed system for in-memory HTAP databases that avoids the large throughput losses of traditional HTAP systems. Polynesia (1) divides the HTAP system into transactional and analytical processing islands, (2) implements new custom hardware that unlocks software optimizations to reduce the costs of update propagation and consistency, and (3) exploits processing-in-memory for the analytical islands to alleviate data movement overheads. Our evaluation shows that Polynesia outperforms three state-of-the-art HTAP systems, with average transactional/analytical throughput improvements of 1.7x/3.7x, and reduces energy consumption by 48% over the prior lowest-energy HTAP system., arXiv

Omics software tools have reshaped the landscape of modern biology and become an essential component of biomedical research. The increasing dependence of biomedical scientists on these powerful tools creates a need for easier installation and greater usability. Packaging, virtualization, and containerization are different approaches to satisfy this need by wrapping omics tools in additional software that makes the omics tools easier to install and use. Here, we systematically review practices across prominent packaging, virtualization, and containerization platforms. We outline the challenges, advantages, and limitations of each approach and some of the most widely used platforms from the perspectives of users, software developers, and system administrators. We also propose principles to make packaging, virtualization, and containerization of omics software more sustainable and robust to increase the reproducibility of biomedical and life science research., arXiv

Enhancing neural networks with knowledge of physical equations has become an efficient way of solving various physics problems, from fluid flow to electromagnetism. Graph neural networks show promise in accurately representing irregularly meshed objects and learning their dynamics, but have so far required supervision through large datasets. In this work, we represent meshes naturally as graphs, process these using Graph Networks, and formulate our physics-based loss to provide an unsupervised learning framework for partial differential equations (PDE). We quantitatively compare our results to a classical numerical PDE solver, and show that our computationally efficient approach can be used as an interactive PDE solver that is adjusting boundary conditions in real-time and remains sufficiently close to the baseline solution. Our inherently differentiable framework will enable the application of PDE solvers in interactive settings, such as model-based control of soft-body deformations, or in gradient-based optimization methods that require a fully differentiable pipeline.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Under the auspices of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and through the Paris Agreement, there is a commitment to keep global temperature rise this century to well below two degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial levels. This will require a variety of strategies, including increased renewable power generation, broad-scale electrification, greater energy efficiency, and carbon-negative technologies. With increasing support worldwide, innovations in carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies are now widely acknowledged to contribute to achieving climate mitigation targets while creating economic opportunities. To assess the environmental impacts and commercial competitiveness of these innovations, consistent and transparent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) are needed. Against this background, guidelines (Version 1.0) on LCA and TEA were published in 2018 and updated (Version 1.1) in 2020 as a valuable toolkit for evaluating and guiding CCU technology development. Ever since, an open community of practitioners, commissioners, and users of such assessments has been involved in gathering feedback on the document. That feedback has informed the improvements and the expansion incorporated in Version 2.0 of the Guidelines. This revised and expanded version 2.0 of the Guidelines has again been developed by a team of researchers at RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies Potsdam, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Michigan. Several workshops, the work of the International CCU Assessment Harmonization Group, and feedback from practitioners and users of LCA and TEA studies, have contributed to this updated version. Version 2.0 includes new chapters on integrated assessments that combine LCA and TEA, how to assess early-stage technologies, and how to include social impact in LCA and TEA.

Quantum mechanical effects have enabled the construction of cryptographic primitives that are impossible classically. For example, quantum copy-protection allows for a program to be encoded in a quantum state in such a way that the program can be evaluated, but not copied. Many of these cryptographic primitives are two-party protocols, where one party, Bob, has full quantum computational capabilities, and the other party, Alice, is only required to send random BB84 states to Bob. In this work, we show how such protocols can generically be converted to ones where Alice is fully classical, assuming that Bob cannot efficiently solve the LWE problem. In particular, this means that all communication between (classical) Alice and (quantum) Bob is classical, yet they can still make use of cryptographic primitives that would be impossible if both parties were classical. We apply this conversion procedure to obtain quantum cryptographic protocols with classical communication for unclonable encryption, copy-protection, computing on encrypted data, and verifiable blind delegated computation. The key technical ingredient for our result is a protocol for classically-instructed parallel remote state preparation of BB84 states. This is a multi-round protocol between (classical) Alice and (quantum polynomial-time) Bob that allows Alice to certify that Bob must have prepared n uniformly random BB84 states (up to a change of basis on his space). While previous approaches could only certify one- or two-qubit states, our protocol allows for the certification of an n-fold tensor product of BB84 states. Furthermore, Alice knows which specific BB84 states Bob has prepared, while Bob himself does not. Hence, the situation at the end of this protocol is (almost) equivalent to one where Alice sent n random BB84 states to Bob. We present nuReality, a virtual reality 'VR' environment designed to test the efficacy of vehicular behaviors to communicate intent during interactions between autonomous vehicles 'AVs' and pedestrians at urban intersections. In this project we focus on expressive behaviors as a means for pedestrians to readily recognize the underlying intent of the AV's movements. VR is an ideal tool to use to test these situations as it can be immersive and place subjects into these potentially dangerous scenarios without risk. nuReality provides a novel and immersive virtual reality environment that includes numerous visual details (road and building texturing, parked cars, swaying tree limbs) as well as auditory details (birds chirping, cars honking in the distance, people talking). In these files we present the nuReality environment, its 10 unique vehicle behavior scenarios, and the Unreal Engine and Autodesk Maya source files for each scenario. An important theoretical problem in the study of quantum computation, that is also practically relevant in the context of near-term quantum devices, is to understand the computational power of hybrid models, that combine poly-time classical computation with short-depth quantum computation. Here, we consider two such models: CQ_d which captures the scenario of a polynomial-time classical algorithm that queries a d-depth quantum computer many times; and QC_d which is more analogous to measurement-based quantum computation and captures the scenario of a d-depth quantum computer with the ability to change the sequence of gates being applied depending on measurement outcomes processed by a classical computation. Chia, Chung & Lai (STOC 2020) and Coudron & Menda (STOC 2020) showed that these models (with d=log^O(1) (n)) are strictly weaker than BQP (the class of problems solvable by poly-time quantum computation), relative to an oracle, disproving a conjecture of Jozsa in the relativised world. We show that, despite the similarities between CQ_d and QC_d, the two models are incomparable, i.e. CQ_d $\nsubseteq$ QC_d and QC_d $\nsubseteq$ CQ_d relative to an oracle. In other words, there exist problems that one model can solve but not the other and vice versa. We do this by considering new oracle problems that capture the distinctions between the two models and by introducing the notion of an intrinsically stochastic oracle, an oracle whose responses are inherently randomised, which is used for our second result. While we leave showing the second separation relative to a standard oracle as an open problem, we believe the notion of stochastic oracles could be of independent interest for studying complexity classes which have resisted separation in the standard oracle model. Recent nano-technological advances enable the Monolithic 3D (M3D) integration of multiple memory and logic layers in a single chip with fine-grained connections. M3D technology leads to significantly higher main memory bandwidth and shorter latency than existing 3D-stacked systems. We show for a variety of workloads on a state-of-the-art M3D system that the performance and energy bottlenecks shift from the main memory to the core and cache hierarchy. Hence, there is a need to revisit current core and cache designs that have been conventionally tailored to tackle the memory bottleneck. Our goal is to redesign the core and cache hierarchy, given the fundamentally new trade-offs of M3D, to benefit a wide range of workloads. To this end, we take two steps. First, we perform a design space exploration of the cache and core's key components. We highlight that in M3D systems, (i) removing the shared last-level cache leads to similar or larger performance benefits than increasing its size or reducing its latency; (ii) improving L1 latency has a large impact on improving performance; (iii) wider pipelines are increasingly beneficial; (iv) the performance impact of branch speculation and pipeline frontend increases; (v) the current synchronization schemes limit parallel speedup. Second, we propose an optimized M3D system, RevaMp3D, where (i) using the tight connectivity between logic layers, we efficiently increase pipeline width, reduce L1 latency, and enable fine-grained synchronization; (ii) using the high-bandwidth and energy-efficient main memory, we alleviate the amplified energy and speculation bottlenecks by memoizing the repetitive fetched, decoded, and reordered instructions and turning off the relevant parts of the core pipeline when possible. In the field of structural health monitoring (SHM), inverse problems which require repeated analyses are common. With the increase in the use of nonlinear models, the development of nonlinear reduced order modelling techniques is of paramount interest. Of considerable research interest, is the use of flexible and scalable machine learning methods which can learn to approximate the behaviour of nonlinear dynamic systems using input and output data. One such nonlinear system of interest, in the context of wind turbine structures, is the soil structure interaction (SSI) problem. Soil demonstrates strongly nonlinear behaviour with regards to its restoring force and has been shown to considerably influence the dynamic response of wind turbine structures. In this work, we demonstrate the application of a recently developed nonlinear reduced order modelling method, which leverages Autoencoder and LSTM neural networks, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction problem of a wind turbine monopile subject to realistic loading at the seabed level. The accuracy and efficiency of the methodology is compared to full order simulations carried out using Abaqus. Prior works propose SRAM-based TRNGs that extract entropy from SRAM arrays. SRAM arrays are widely used in a majority of specialized or general-purpose chips that perform the computation to store data inside the chip. Thus, SRAM-based TRNGs present a low-cost alternative to dedicated hardware TRNGs. However, existing SRAM-based TRNGs suffer from 1) low TRNG throughput, 2) high energy consumption, 3) high TRNG latency, and 4) the inability to generate true random numbers continuously, which limits the application space of SRAM-based TRNGs. Our goal in this paper is to design an SRAM-based TRNG that overcomes these four key limitations and thus, extends the application space of SRAM-based TRNGs. To this end, we propose TuRaN, a new high-throughput, energy-efficient, and low-latency SRAM-based TRNG that can sustain continuous operation. TuRaN leverages the key observation that accessing SRAM cells results in random access failures when the supply voltage is reduced below the manufacturer-recommended supply voltage. TuRaN generates random numbers at high throughput by repeatedly accessing SRAM cells with reduced supply voltage and post-processing the resulting random faults using the SHA-256 hash function. To demonstrate the feasibility of TuRaN, we conduct SPICE simulations on different process nodes and analyze the potential of access failure for use as an entropy source. We verify and support our simulation results by conducting real-world experiments on two commercial off-the-shelf FPGA boards. We evaluate the quality of the random numbers generated by TuRaN using the widely-adopted NIST standard randomness tests and observe that TuRaN passes all tests. With the application of machine learning to security-critical and sensitive domains, there is a growing need for integrity and privacy in computation using accelerators, such as GPUs. Unfortunately, the support for trusted execution on GPUs is currently very limited - trusted execution on accelerators is particularly challenging since the attestation mechanism should not reduce performance. Although hardware support for trusted execution on GPUs is emerging, we study purely software-based approaches for trusted GPU execution. A software-only approach offers distinct advantages: (1) complement hardware-based approaches, enhancing security especially when vulnerabilities in the hardware implementation degrade security, (2) operate on GPUs without hardware support for trusted execution, and (3) achieve security without reliance on secrets embedded in the hardware, which can be extracted as history has shown. In this work, we present SAGE, a software-based attestation mechanism for GPU execution. SAGE enables secure code execution on NVIDIA GPUs of the Ampere architecture (A100), providing properties of code integrity and secrecy, computation integrity, as well as data integrity and secrecy - all in the presence of malicious code running on the GPU and CPU. We propose a novel multivariate nonparametric multiple change point detection method using classifiers. We construct a classifier log-likelihood ratio that uses class probability predictions to compare different change point configurations. We propose a computationally feasible search method that is particularly well suited for random forests, denoted by changeforest. However, the method can be paired with any classifier that yields class probability predictions, which we illustrate by also using a k-nearest neighbor classifier. We provide theoretical results motivating our choices. In a large simulation study, our proposed changeforest method achieves improved empirical performance compared to existing multivariate nonparametric change point detection methods. Just like in humans vision plays a fundamental role in guiding adaptive locomotion, when designing the control strategy for a walking assistive technology, Computer Vision may bring substantial improvements when performing an environment-based assistance modulation. In this work, we developed a hip exosuit controller able to distinguish among three different walking terrains through the use of an RGB camera and to adapt the assistance accordingly. The system was tested with seven healthy participants walking throughout an overground path comprising of staircases and level ground. Subjects performed the task with the exosuit disabled (Exo Off), constant assistance profile (Vision Off ), and with assistance modulation (Vision On). Our results showed that the controller was able to promptly classify in real-time the path in front of the user with an overall accuracy per class above the 85%, and to perform assistance modulation accordingly. Evaluation related to the effects on the user showed that Vision On was able to outperform the other two conditions: we obtained significantly higher metabolic savings than Exo Off, with a peak of about -20% when climbing up the staircase and about -16% in the overall path, and than Vision Off when ascending or descending stairs.
