We analyze a sample of 25 [Ne v] (λ3426) emission-line galaxies at 1.4 < z < 2.3 using Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 G102 and G141 grism observations from the CANDELS Lyα Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey. [Ne v] emission probes extremely energetic photoionization (creation potential of 97.11 eV) and is often attributed to energetic radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), shocks from supernovae, or an otherwise very hard ionizing spectrum from the stellar continuum. In this work, we use [Ne v] in conjunction with other rest-frame UV/optical emission lines ([O ii] λ λ3726, 3729, [Ne iii] λ3869, Hβ, [O iii] λ λ4959, 5007, Hα+[N ii] λ λ6548, 6583, [S ii] λ λ6716, 6731), deep (2–7 Ms) X-ray observations (from Chandra), and mid-infrared imaging (from Spitzer) to study the origin of this emission and to place constraints on the nature of the ionizing engine. The majority of the [Ne v]-detected galaxies have properties consistent with ionization from AGNs. However, for our [Ne v]-selected sample, the X-ray luminosities are consistent with local (z ≲ 0.1) X-ray-selected Seyferts, but the [Ne v] luminosities are more consistent with those from z ∼ 1 X-ray-selected QSOs. The excess [Ne v] emission requires either reduced hard X-rays or a ∼0.1 keV excess. We discuss possible origins of the apparent [Ne v] excess, which could be related to the “soft (X-ray) excess” observed in some QSOs and Seyferts and/or be a consequence of a complex/anisotropic geometry for the narrow-line region, combined with absorption from a warm, relativistic wind ejected from the accretion disk. We also consider implications for future studies of extreme high-ionization systems in the epoch of reionization (z ≳ 6) with the James Webb Space Telescope.

We present Lyα imaging of 45 low-redshift star-forming galaxies observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. The galaxies have been selected to have moderate to high star formation rates (SFRs) using far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosity and Hα equivalent width criteria, but no constraints on Lyα luminosity. We employ a pixel stellar continuum fitting code to obtain accurate continuum-subtracted Lyα, Hα, and Hβ maps. We find that Lyα is less concentrated than FUV and optical line emission in almost all galaxies with significant Lyα emission. We present global measurements of Lyα and other quantities measured in apertures designed to capture all of the Lyα emission. We then show how the escape fraction of Lyα relates to a number of other measured quantities (mass, metallicity, star formation, ionization parameter, and extinction). We find that the escape fraction is strongly anticorrelated with nebular and stellar extinction, weakly anticorrelated with stellar mass, but no conclusive evidence for correlations with other quantities. We show that Lyα escape fractions are inconsistent with common dust extinction laws, and discuss how a combination of radiative transfer effects and clumpy dust models can help resolve the discrepancies. We present an SFR calibration based on Lyα luminosity, where the equivalent width of Lyα is used to correct for nonunity escape fraction, and show that this relation provides a reasonably accurate SFR estimate. We also show stacked growth curves of Lyα for the galaxies that can be used to find aperture loss fractions at a given physical radius.

We investigate the role of dense environments in suppressing star formation by studying $\rm \log_{10}(M_\star/M_\odot) > 9.7$ star-forming galaxies in nine clusters from the Local Cluster Survey ($0.0137 < z < 0.0433$) and a large comparison field sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We compare the star-formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass relation as a function of environment and morphology. After carefully controlling for mass, we find that in all environments, the degree of SFR suppression increases with increasing bulge-to-total (B/T) ratio. In addition, the SFRs of cluster and infall galaxies at a fixed mass are more suppressed than their field counterparts at all values of B/T. These results suggest a quenching mechanism that is linked to bulge growth that operates in all environments and an additional mechanism that further reduces the SFRs of galaxies in dense environments. We limit the sample to $B/T < 0.3$ galaxies to control for the trends with morphology and find that the excess population of cluster galaxies with suppressed SFRs persists. We model the timescale associated with the decline of SFRs in dense environments and find that the observed SFRs of the cluster core galaxies are consistent with a range of models including: a mechanism that acts slowly and continuously over a long (2-5 Gyr) timescale, and a more rapid ($, 17 pages, 12 figures

Context:TheGW-Universe Toolboxis a software package that simulates observations of the gravitational wave (GW) Universe with different types of GW detectors, including Earth-based and space-borne laser interferometers and pulsar timing arrays. It is accessible as a website, and can also be imported and run locally as a Python package.Methods:We employ the method used by theGW-Universe Toolboxto generate a synthetic catalogue of detection of stellar-mass binary black hole (BBH) mergers. As an example of its scientific application, we study how GW observations of BBHs can be used to constrain the merger rate as a function of redshift and masses. We study advanced LIGO (aLIGO) and theEinsteinTelescope (ET) as two representatives of the second and third generation GW observatories, respectively. We also simulate the observations from a detector that is half as sensitive as the ET at its nominal designed sensitivity, which represents an early phase of the ET. We used two methods to obtain the constraints on the source population properties from the catalogues: the first uses a parameteric differential merger rate model and applies a Bayesian inference on the parameters; the other is non-parameteric and uses weighted Kernel density estimators.Results:Our results show the overwhelming advantages of the third generation detector over those of the second generation for the study of BBH population properties, especially at redshifts higher than ∼2, where the merger rate is believed to peak. With the simulated aLIGO catalogue, the parameteric Bayesian method can still give some constraints on the merger rate density and mass function beyond its detecting horizon, while the non-parametric method loses the constraining ability completely there. The difference is due to the extra information placed by assuming a specific parameterisation of the population model in the Bayesian method. In the non-parameteric method, no assumption of the general shape of the merger rate density and mass function are placed, not even the assumption of its smoothness. These two methods represent the two extreme situations of general population reconstruction. We also find that, despite the numbers of detected events of the half ET can easily be compatible with full ET after a longer observation duration, and the catalogue from the full ET can still give much better constraints on the population properties due to its smaller uncertainties on the physical parameters of the GW events.

We present a first-look analysis of the JWST ERO data in the SMACS J0723.3-7327 cluster field. We begin by reporting 10 new spectroscopic redshifts from $\lambda_\mathrm{obs}=1.8-5.2\mu$m NIRSpec medium-resolution ($R=\lambda/\Delta\lambda = 1000$) data. These are determined via multiple high-SNR emission line detections, with 5 objects at $1 < z < 3$ displaying multiple rest-frame near-infrared Hydrogen Paschen lines, and 5 objects at $5 < z < 9$ displaying rest-frame optical Oxygen and Hydrogen Balmer lines. For the 5 higher-redshift galaxies we extract fluxes in 6 NIRCam bands spanning $\lambda_\mathrm{obs}=0.8-5\mu$m and perform spectral energy distribution fitting, in combination with existing HST photometry. The $7 < z < 9$ objects exhibit a U-shaped pattern across the F277W, F356W and F444W bands, indicating a Balmer break seen in emission (Balmer jump) and high-equivalent-width [O\,\textsc{iii}] emission. This indicates an extremely young stellar population, with the bulk of the current mass having formed within the past 10 Myr. We report robust stellar masses and mean stellar ages from our spectral fitting, with the four $z > 6$ galaxies exhibiting low stellar masses from log$_{10}(M_*/$M$_\odot)=7.1-8.2$ and correspondingly young mean stellar ages of only a few Myr. The PHANGS collaboration has been building a reference data set for the multiscale, multiphase study of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies. With the successful launch and commissioning of JWST, we can now obtain high-resolution infrared imaging to probe the youngest stellar populations and dust emission on the scales of star clusters and molecular clouds (∼5–50 pc). In Cycle 1, PHANGS is conducting an eight-band imaging survey from 2 to 21 μm of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. Optical integral field spectroscopy, CO(2–1) mapping, and UV-optical imaging for all 19 galaxies have been obtained through large programs with ALMA, VLT-MUSE, and Hubble. PHANGS–JWST enables a full inventory of star formation, accurate measurement of the mass and age of star clusters, identification of the youngest embedded stellar populations, and characterization of the physical state of small dust grains. When combined with Hubble catalogs of ∼10,000 star clusters, MUSE spectroscopic mapping of ∼20,000 H II regions, and ∼12,000 ALMA-identified molecular clouds, it becomes possible to measure the timescales and efficiencies of the earliest phases of star formation and feedback, build an empirical model of the dependence of small dust grain properties on local ISM conditions, and test our understanding of how dust-reprocessed starlight traces star formation activity, all across a diversity of galactic environments. Using spatially resolved H alpha emission line maps of star-forming galaxies, we study the spatial distribution of star formation over a wide range in redshift (0.5 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 1.7). Our z similar to 0.5 measurements come from deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 G102 grism spectroscopy obtained as part of the CANDELS Ly alpha Emission at Reionization Experiment. For star-forming galaxies with log(M (*)/M (circle dot)) >= 8.96, the mean H alpha effective radius is 1.2 +/- 0.1 times larger than that of the stellar continuum, implying inside-out growth via star formation. This measurement agrees within 1 sigma with those measured at z similar to 1 and z similar to 1.7 from the 3D-HST and KMOS3D surveys, respectively, implying no redshift evolution. However, we observe redshift evolution in the stellar mass surface density within 1 kpc (sigma(1kpc)). Star-forming galaxies at z similar to 0.5 with a stellar mass of log(M (*)/M (circle dot)) = 9.5 have a ratio of sigma(1kpc) in H alpha relative to their stellar continuum that is lower by (19 +/- 2)% compared to z similar to 1 galaxies. sigma(1kpc,H alpha )/sigma(1kpc,Cont) decreases toward higher stellar masses. The majority of the redshift evolution in sigma(1kpc,H alpha )/sigma(1kpc,Cont) versus stellar mass stems from the fact that log(sigma(1kpc,H alpha )) declines twice as much as log(sigma(1kpc,Cont)) from z similar to 1 to 0.5 (at a fixed stellar mass of log(M (*)/M (circle dot)) = 9.5). By comparing our results to the TNG50 cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulation, we rule out dust as the driver of this evolution. Our results are consistent with inside-out quenching following in the wake of inside-out growth, the former of which drives the significant drop in sigma(1kpc,H alpha ) from z similar to 1 to z similar to 0.5.

Using a large sample of sub-L$_*$ galaxies, with similar UV magnitudes, M$_{\rm UV}\simeq -19$ at $z\simeq6$, extracted from the FirstLight simulations, we show the diversity of galaxies at the end of the reionization epoch. We find a factor $\sim$40 variation in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR). This drives a $\sim$1 dex range in equivalent width of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 line. Variations in nebular metallicity and ionization parameter within HII regions lead to a scatter in the equivalent widths and [OIII]/H$\alpha$ line ratio at a fixed sSFR. [OIII]-bright emitters ([OIII]/H$\alpha$>1) have higher ionization parameters and/or higher metallicities than H$\alpha$-bright ([OIII]/H$\alpha$, Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted at MNRAS. Matching the number counts of high-$z$ sub-millimetre-selected galaxies (SMGs) has been a long standing problem for galaxy formation models. In this paper, we use 3D dust radiative transfer to model the sub-mm emission from galaxies in the SIMBA cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, and compare predictions to the latest single-dish observational constraints on the abundance of 850$\mathrm{\mu m}$-selected sources. We find good agreement with the shape of the integrated 850$\mathrm{\mu m}$ luminosity function, and the normalisation is within 0.25 dex at $> 3 \; \mathrm{mJy}$, unprecedented for a fully cosmological hydrodynamic simulation, along with good agreement in the redshift distribution of bright SMGs. The agreement is driven primarily by SIMBA's good match to infrared measures of the star formation rate (SFR) function between $z = 2-4$ at high SFRs. Also important is the self-consistent on-the-fly dust model in SIMBA, which predicts, on average, higher dust masses (by up to a factor of 2.5) compared to using a fixed dust-to-metals ratio of 0.3. We construct a lightcone to investigate the effect of far-field blending, and find that 52% of sources are blends of multiple components, which makes a small contribution to the normalisation of the bright-end of the number counts. We provide new fits to the 850$\mathrm{\mu m}$ luminosity as a function of SFR and dust mass. Our results demonstrate that exotic solutions to the discrepancy between sub-mm counts in simulations and observations, such as a top-heavy IMF, are unnecessary, and that sub-millimetre-bright phases are a natural consequence of massive galaxy evolution., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

We present infrared luminosity functions and dust mass functions for the EAGLE cosmological simulation, based on synthetic multi-wavelength observations generated with the SKIRT radiative transfer code. In the local Universe, we reproduce the observed infrared luminosity and dust mass functions very well. Some minor discrepancies are encountered, mainly in the high luminosity regime, where the EAGLE-SKIRT luminosity functions mildly but systematically underestimate the observed ones. The agreement between the EAGLE-SKIRT infrared luminosity functions and the observed ones gradually worsens with increasing lookback time. Fitting modified Schechter functions to the EAGLE-SKIRT luminosity and dust mass functions at different redshifts up to $z=1$, we find that the evolution is compatible with pure luminosity/mass evolution. The evolution is relatively mild: within this redshift range, we find an evolution of $L_{\star,250}\propto(1+z)^{1.68}$, $L_{\star,\text{TIR}}\propto(1+z)^{2.51}$ and $M_{\star,\text{dust}}\propto(1+z)^{0.83}$ for the characteristic luminosity/mass. For the luminosity/mass density we find $\varepsilon_{250}\propto(1+z)^{1.62}$, $\varepsilon_{\text{TIR}}\propto(1+z)^{2.35}$ and $\rho_{\text{dust}}\propto(1+z)^{0.80}$, respectively. The mild evolution of the dust mass density is in relatively good agreement with observations, but the slow evolution of the infrared luminosity underestimates the observed luminosity evolution significantly. We argue that these differences can be attributed to increasing limitations in the radiative transfer treatment due to increasingly poorer resolution, combined with a slower than observed evolution of the SFR density in the EAGLE simulation and the lack of AGN emission in our EAGLE-SKIRT post-processing recipe., Comment: 13 pages, 6 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galactic bars can affect the evolution of galaxies by redistributing gas in galaxies, possibly contributing to the cessation of star formation. Recent works point to 'bar quenching' playing an important role in massive disk galaxies like the Milky Way. We construct the largest ever sample of gas rich and strongly barred disc galaxies with resolved HI observations making use of both the Giant Meter Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to collect data. This sample, called HIRB (HI Rich Barred) galaxies, were identified with Galaxy Zoo - to find galaxies hosting a strong bar, and the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) blind HI survey- to identify a high HI content. We measure gas fractions, HI morphology and kinematics in each galaxy, and use archival optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to reveal star-formation histories and bar properties. HIRB galaxies presented here support a picture where bar quenching is playing, or will play an important role in their evolution. They also support models which show how the presence of cold gas delays and slows the development of strong bars. The galaxies with the lowest gas fractions (still high for their mass) show clear HI holes, dynamical advanced bars and low star formation rates, those with the highest gas fractions show little impact from their bar on the HI morphology, and are actively star-forming. How such unusual galaxies came to be is an open question. Several of the HIRBs have local gas rich companions. Tidal interactions with these lower mass galaxies could result in an early triggering of the bar and/or accretion of HI between them. We investigate the burstiness of star formation and the ionizing efficiency of a large sample of galaxies at $0.7 < z < 1.5$ using HST grism spectroscopy and deep ultraviolet (UV) imaging in the GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields. The star formation history (SFH) in these strong emission line low-mass galaxies indicates an elevated star formation rate (SFR) based on the H$\alpha$ emission line at a given stellar mass when compared to the standard main sequence. Moreover, when comparing the H$\alpha$ and UV SFR indicators, we find that an excess in SFR(H$\alpha$) compared to SFR(UV) is preferentially observed in lower-mass galaxies below $10^{9}$ M$\odot$, which are also the highest-EW galaxies. These findings suggest that the burstiness parameters of these strong emission line galaxies may differ from those inferred from hydrodynamical simulations and previous observations. For instance, a larger burstiness duty cycle would explain the observed SFR(H$\alpha$) excess. We also estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency $\xi_{ion}$, finding a median value of Log($\xi_{ion}$/erg$^{-1}$ Hz)$=24.80 \pm 0.26$ when adopting a Galactic dust correction for H$\alpha$ and an SMC one for the stellar component. We observe an increase of $\xi_{ion}$ with redshift, further confirming similar results at higher redshifts. We also find that $\xi_{ion}$ is strongly correlated with EW(H$\alpha$), which provides an approach for deriving $\xi_{ion}$ in early galaxies. Lower-mass, lower-luminosity galaxies have a higher $\xi_{ion}$. We report the serendipitous discovery of an overdensity of CO emitters in an X-ray-identified cluster (Log$_{10}$M$_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot}\sim13.6$ at z=1.3188) using ALMA. We present spectroscopic confirmation of 6 new cluster members exhibiting CO(2-1) emission, adding to 2 existing optical/IR spectroscopic members undetected in CO. This is the lowest mass cluster to date at z>1 with molecular gas measurements, bridging the observational gap between galaxies in the more extreme, well-studied clusters (Log$_{10}$~M$_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim14$) and those in group or field environments at cosmic noon. The CO sources are concentrated on the sky (within ~1-arcmin diameter) and phase space analysis indicates the gas resides in galaxies already within the cluster environment. We find that CO sources sit in similar phase space as CO-rich galaxies in more massive clusters at similar redshifts (have similar accretion histories) while maintaining field-like molecular gas reservoirs, compared to scaling relations. This work presents the deepest CO survey to date in a galaxy cluster at z>1, uncovering gas reservoirs down to M$_{\rm H_{2}}>1.6\times10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$ (5$σ$ at 50% primary beam). Our deep limits rule out the presence of gas content in excess of the field scaling relations; however, combined with literature CO detections, cluster gas fractions in general appear systematically high, on the upper envelope or above the field. This study is the first demonstration that low mass clusters at z~1-2 can host overdensities of CO emitters with surviving gas reservoirs, in line with the prediction that quenching is delayed after first infall while galaxies consume the gas bound to the disk., Submitted to AAS Journals on December 15, 2021. Star formation histories (SFHs) are integral to our understanding of galaxy evolution. We can study recent SFHs by comparing the star formation rate (SFR) calculated using different tracers, as each probes a different timescale. We aim to calibrate a proxy for the present-day rate of change in SFR, dSFR/dt, which does not require full spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling and depends on as few observables as possible, to guarantee its broad applicability. To achieve this, we create a set of models in CIGALE and define an SFR change diagnostic as the ratio of the SFR averaged over the past 5 and 200 Myr, /, probed by the H$\alpha$-FUV colour. We apply / to the nearby spiral NGC 628 and find that its star formation activity has overall been declining in the recent past, with the spiral arms, however, maintaining a higher level of activity. The impact of the spiral arm structure is observed to be stronger on / than on the star formation efficiency (SFE$_\text{H$_2$}$). In addition, increasing disk pressure tends to increase recent star formation, and consequently /. We conclude that / is sensitive to the molecular gas content, spiral arm structure, and disk pressure. The / indicator is general and can be used to reconstruct the recent SFH of any star-forming galaxy for which H$\alpha$, FUV, and either mid- or far-IR photometry is available, without the need of detailed modeling., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We present a study of the relationships and environmental dependencies between stellar mass, star formation rate, and gas metallicity for more than 700 galaxies in groups up to redshift 0.35 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. To identify the main drivers, our sample was analyzed as a function of group-centric distance, projected galaxy number density, and stellar mass. By using control samples of more than 16000 star-forming field galaxies and volume limited samples, we find that the highest enhancement in SFR (0.3 dex) occurs in galaxies with the lowest local density. In contrast to previous work, our data show small enhancements of $\sim$0.1 dex in SFR for galaxies at the highest local densities or group-centric distances. Our data indicates quenching in SFR only for massive galaxies, suggesting that stellar mass might be the main driver of quenching processes for star forming galaxies. We can discard a morphological driven quenching, since the S\'ersic index distribution for group and control galaxies are similar. The gas metallicity does not vary drastically. It increases $\sim$0.08 dex for galaxies at the highest local densities, and decreases for galaxies at the highest group-centric distances, in agreement with previous work. Altogether, the local density, rather than group-centric distance, shows the stronger impact in enhancing both, the SFR and gas metallicity. We applied the same methodology to galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulations, and although we were able to reproduce the general observational trends, the differences between group and control samples only partially agree with the observations, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present an extensive ALMA spectroscopic follow-up programme of the $z\,{=}\,4.3$ structure SPT2349$-$56, one of the most actively star-forming proto-cluster cores known, to identify additional members using their [C{\sc ii}] 158\,$\mu$m and \mbox{CO(4--3)} lines. In addition to robustly detecting the 14 previously published galaxies in this structure, we identify a further 15 associated galaxies at $z\,{=}\,4.3$, resolving 55$\,{\pm}\,$5\,per cent of the 870-$\mu$m flux density at 0.5\,arcsec resolution compared to 21\,arcsec single-dish data. These galaxies are distributed into a central core containing 23 galaxies extending out to 300\,kpc in diameter, and a northern extension, offset from the core by 400\,kpc, containing three galaxies. We discovered three additional galaxies in a red {\it Herschel\/}-SPIRE source 1.5\,Mpc from the main structure, suggesting the existence of many other sources at the same redshift as SPT2349$-$56 that are not yet detected in the limited coverage of our data. An analysis of the velocity distribution of the central galaxies indicates that this region may be virialized with a mass of (9$\pm$5)$\,{\times}\,$10$^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$, while the two offset galaxy groups are about 30 and 60\,per cent less massive and show significant velocity offsets from the central group. We calculate the [C{\sc ii}] and far-infrared number counts, and find evidence for a break in the [C{\sc ii}] luminosity function. We estimate the average SFR density within the region of SPT2349$-$56 containing single-dish emission (a proper diametre of 720\,kpc), assuming spherical symmetry, to be roughly 4$\,{\times}\,10^4$\,M$_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$; this may be an order of magnitude greater than the most extreme examples seen in simulations., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS Feb. 25, 2020. Aims: The complexity of star formation at the physical scale of molecular clouds is not yet fully understood. We investigate the mechanisms regulating the formation of stars in different environments within nearby star-forming galaxies from the PHANGS sample. Methods: Integral field spectroscopic data and radio-interferometric observations of 18 galaxies were combined to explore the existence of the resolved star formation main sequence (rSFMS), resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (rKS), and resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS), and we derived their slope and scatter at spatial resolutions from 100 pc to 1 kpc (under various assumptions). Results: All three relations were recovered at the highest spatial resolution (100 pc). Furthermore, significant variations in these scaling relations were observed across different galactic environments. The exclusion of non-detections has a systematic impact on the inferred slope as a function of the spatial scale. Finally, the scatter of the $\Sigma_\mathrm{mol. gas + stellar}$ versus $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ correlation is smaller than that of the rSFMS, but higher than that found for the rKS. Conclusions: The rMGMS has the tightest relation at a spatial scale of 100 pc (scatter of 0.34 dex), followed by the rKS (0.41 dex) and then the rSFMS (0.51 dex). This is consistent with expectations from the timescales involved in the evolutionary cycle of molecular clouds. Surprisingly, the rKS shows the least variation across galaxies and environments, suggesting a tight link between molecular gas and subsequent star formation. The scatter of the three relations decreases at lower spatial resolutions, with the rKS being the tightest (0.27 dex) at a spatial scale of 1 kpc. The feedback from young stars (i.e. pre-supernova) is thought to play a crucial role in molecular cloud destruction. In this paper, we assess the feedback mechanisms acting within a sample of 5810 HII regions identified from the PHANGS-MUSE survey of 19 nearby ($ 1$, and expanding, yet there is a small sample of compact HII regions with $P_\mathrm{tot,max}/P_\mathrm{de} < 1$ ($\sim$1% of the sample). This paper is the second of a series that tackles the properties of molecular gas in galaxies residing in clusters and their related large-scale structures. Out of 21 targeted fields, 19 galaxies were detected in CO(3-2) with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), including two detections within a single field. These galaxies are either bona fide members of the CL1301.7$-$1139 cluster ($z=0.4828$, $\sigma_{cl}=681$ km s$^{-1}$), or located within $\sim 7 \times R_{200}$, its virial radius. They have been selected to sample the range of photometric local densities around CL1301.7$-$1139, with stellar masses above log($M_{\rm star}$) = 10, and to be located in the blue clump of star-forming galaxies derived from the $u$, $g$, and $i$ photometric bands. Unlike previous works, our sample selection does not impose a minimum star formation rate or detection in the far-infrared. As such and as much as possible, it delivers an unbiased view of the gas content of normal star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 0.5$. Our study highlights the variety of paths to star formation quenching, and most likely the variety of physical properties (i.e. temperature, density) of the corresponding galaxy's cold molecular gas. Just as in the case of CL1411.1$-$1148, although to a smaller extent, we identify a number of galaxies with lower gas fraction than classically found in other surveys. These galaxies can still be on the star-forming main sequence. In the last decades, much effort has been put into finding the star formation law which could unequivocally link the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) densities measured on sub-kiloparsec scale in star-forming galaxies. The conventional approach of using the observed surface densities to infer star formation laws has however revealed a major and well-known issue, as such relations are valid for the high-density regions of galaxies but break down in low-density and HI-dominated environments. Recently, an empirical correlation between the total gas (HI+H$_2$) and the star formation rate (SFR) volume densities was obtained for a sample of nearby disc galaxies and for the Milky Way. This volumetric star formation (VSF) law is a single power-law with no break and a smaller intrinsic scatter with respect to the star formation laws based on the surface density. In this work, we explore the VSF law in the regime of dwarf galaxies in order to test its validity in HI-dominated, low-density, and low-metallicity environments. In addition, we assess this relation in the outskirts of spiral galaxies, which are low-density and HI-dominated regions similar to dwarf galaxies. Remarkably, we find the VSF law, namely $\rho_\mathrm{SFR} \propto \rho_\mathrm{gas}^\alpha$ with $\alpha \approx 2$, is valid for both these regimes. This result indicates that the VSF law, which holds unbroken for a wide range of gas ($\approx 3$ dex) and SFR ($\approx 6$ dex) volume densities, is the empirical relation with the smallest intrinsic scatter and is likely more fundamental than surface-based star formation laws., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted by A&A

We investigate the relationship between environment and the galaxy main sequence (the relationship between stellar mass and star formation rate) and also the relationship between environment and radio luminosity (P$_{\rm 1.4GHz}$) to shed new light on the effects of the environments on galaxies. We use the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz catalogue that consists of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies (AGN) in three different environments (field, filament, cluster) and for three different galaxy types (satellite, central, isolated). We perform for the first time a comparative analysis of the distribution of SFGs with respect to the main sequence (MS) consensus region from the literature, taking into account galaxy environment and using radio observations at 0.1 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1.2. Our results corroborate that SFR is declining with cosmic time which is consistent with the literature. We find that the slope of the MS for different $z$ and M$_{*}$ bins is shallower than the MS consensus with a gradual evolution towards higher redshift bins, irrespective of environments. We see no SFR trends on both environments and galaxy type given the large errors. In addition, we note that the environment does not seem to be the cause of the flattening of MS at high stellar masses for our sample., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Aims. We present the detailed characterisation of a sample of 56 sources serendipitously detected in ALMA band 7 as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE). These sources, detected in COSMOS and ECDFS, have been used to derive the total infrared luminosity function (LF) and to estimate the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) up to z similar or equal to 6.Methods. We looked for counterparts of the ALMA sources in all the available multi-wavelength (from HST to VLA) and photometric redshift catalogues. We also made use of deeper UltraVISTA and Spitzer source lists and maps to identify optically dark sources with no matches in the public catalogues. We used the sources with estimated redshifts to derive the 250 mu m rest-frame and total infrared (8-1000 mu m) LFs from z similar or equal to 0.5 to 6.Results. Our ALMA blind survey (860 mu m flux density range: similar to 0.3-12.5 mJy) allows us to further push the study of the nature and evolution of dusty galaxies at high-z, identifying luminous and massive sources to redshifts and faint luminosities never probed before by any far-infrared surveys. The ALPINE data are the first ones to sample the faint end of the infrared LF, showing little evolution from z similar or equal to 2.5 to z similar or equal to 6, and a "flat" slope up to the highest redshifts (i.e. 4.5 3.

We present the deepest Spitzer/IRAC $3.6$, $4.5$, $5.8$ and $8.0\mu$m wide-area mosaics yet over the GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields as part of the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide-Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) project. We reduced and mosaicked in a self-consistent way observations taken by the 11 different Spitzer/IRAC programs over the two GOODS fields from 12 years of Spitzer cryogenic and warm mission data. The cumulative depth in the $3.6\mu$m and $4.5\mu$m bands amounts to $\sim 4260$ hr, $\sim 1220$ hr of which are new very deep observations from the GREATS program itself. In the deepest area, the full-depth mosaics reach $\gtrsim200$ hr over an area of $\sim100$ arcmin$^2$, corresponding to a sensitivity of $\sim29$ AB magnitude at $3.6\mu$m ($1\sigma$ for point sources). Archival cryogenic $5.8\mu$m and $8.0\mu$m band data (a cumulative 976 hr) are also included in the release. The mosaics are projected onto the tangential plane of CANDELS/GOODS at a $0.3''$ pixel$^{-1}$ scale. This paper describes the methodology enabling, and the characteristics of, the public release of the mosaic science images, the corresponding coverage maps in the four IRAC bands, and the empirical Point-Spread Functions (PSFs). These PSFs enable mitigation of the source blending effects by taking into account the complex position-dependent variation in the IRAC images. The GREATS data products are in the Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). We also release the deblended $3.6$-to-$8.0\mu$m photometry for $9192$ Lyman-Break galaxies at $z\sim3.5-10$. GREATS will be the deepest mid-infrared imaging until JWST and, as such, constitutes a major resource for characterizing early galaxy assembly., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJS. In the local (redshift z~0) Universe, collisional ring galaxies make up only ~0.01% of galaxies and are formed by head-on galactic collisions that trigger radially propagating density waves. These striking systems provide key snapshots for dissecting galactic disks and are studied extensively in the local Universe. However, not much is known about distant (z>0.1) collisional rings. Here we present a detailed study of a ring galaxy at a look-back time of 10.8 Gyr (z=2.19). Compared with our Milky Way, this galaxy has a similar stellar mass, but has a stellar half-light radius that is 1.5-2.2 times larger and is forming stars 50 times faster. The large, diffuse stellar light outside the star-forming ring, combined with a radial velocity on the ring and an intruder galaxy nearby, provides evidence for this galaxy hosting a collisional ring. If the ring is secularly evolved, the implied large bar in a giant disk would be inconsistent with the current understanding of the earliest formation of barred spirals. Contrary to previous predictions, this work suggests that massive collisional rings were as rare 11 Gyr ago as they are today. Context. Investigating the dust heating mechanisms in galaxies provides a deeper understanding of how the internal energy balance drives their evolution. Over the last decade radiative transfer simulations based on the Monte Carlo method have emphasised the role of the various stellar populations heating the diffuse dust. Beyond the expected heating through ongoing star formation, older stellar populations (≥8 Gyr) and even active galactic nuclei can both contribute energy to the infrared emission of diffuse dust. Aims. In this particular study we examine how the radiation of an external heating source, such as the less massive galaxy NGC 5195 in the M 51 interacting system, could affect the heating of the diffuse dust of its parent galaxy NGC 5194, and vice versa. Our goal is to quantify the exchange of energy between the two galaxies by mapping the 3D distribution of their radiation field. Methods. We used SKIRT, a state-of-the-art 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, to construct the 3D model of the radiation field of M 51, following the methodology defined in the DustPedia framework. In the interest of modelling, the assumed centre-to-centre distance separation between the two galaxies is ∼10 kpc. Results. Our model is able to reproduce the global spectral energy distribution of the system, and it matches the resolved optical and infrared images fairly well. In total, 40.7% of the intrinsic stellar radiation of the combined system is absorbed by dust. Furthermore, we quantify the contribution of the various dust heating sources in the system, and find that the young stellar population of NGC 5194 is the predominant dust-heating agent, with a global heating fraction of 71.2%. Another 23% is provided by the older stellar population of the same galaxy, while the remaining 5.8% has its origin in NGC 5195. Locally, we find that the regions of NGC 5194 closer to NGC 5195 are significantly affected by the radiation field of the latter, with the absorbed energy fraction rising up to 38%. The contribution of NGC 5195 remains under the percentage level in the outskirts of the disc of NGC 5194. This is the first time that the heating of the diffuse dust by a companion galaxy is quantified in a nearby interacting system.

In Meidt et al. (2018), we showed that gas kinematics on the scale of individual molecular clouds are not dominated by self-gravity but also track a component that originates with orbital motion in the potential of the host galaxy. This agrees with observed cloud line widths, which show systematic variations from virial motions with environment, pointing at the influence of the galaxy potential. In this paper, we hypothesize that these motions act to slow down the collapse of gas and so help regulate star formation. Extending the results of Meidt et al. (2018), we derive a dynamical collapse timescale that approaches the free-fall time only once the gas has fully decoupled from the galactic potential. Using this timescale we make predictions for how the fraction of free-falling, strongly self-gravitating gas varies throughout the disks of star-forming galaxies. We also use this collapse timescale to predict variations in the molecular gas star formation efficiency, which is lowered from a maximum, feedback-regulated level in the presence of strong coupling to the galactic potential. Our model implies that gas can only decouple from the galaxy to collapse and efficiently form stars deep within clouds. We show that this naturally explains the observed drop in star formation rate per unit gas mass in the Milky Way's CMZ and other galaxy centers.
