Point-of-care testing of pathogens is becoming more and more important for the prevention and control of food poisoning. Herein, a power-free colorimetric biosensor was presented for rapid detection of Salmonella using a microfluidic SlipChip for fluidic control and Au@PtPd nanocatalysts for signal amplification. All the procedures, including solution mixing, immune reaction, magnetic separation, residual washing, mimicking catalysis and colorimetric detection, were integrated on this SlipChip. First, the mixture of the bacterial sample, immune magnetic nanobeads (IMBs) and immune Au@PtPd nanocatalysts (INCs), washing buffer and H2O2–TMB chromogenic substrate were preloaded into the sample, washing and catalysis chambers, respectively. After the top layer of this SlipChip was slid to connect the sample chamber with the separation chamber, the mixture was moved back and forth through the asymmetrical split-and-recombine micromixer by using a disposable syringe to form the IMB–Salmonella–INC sandwich conjugates. Then, the conjugates were captured in the separation chamber using a magnetic field, and the top layer was slid to connect the washing chamber with the separation chamber for washing away excessive INCs. Finally, the top layer was slid to connect the catalysis chamber with the separation chamber, and the colorless substrate was catalyzed by the INCs with peroxidase-mimic activity to generate color change, followed by using a smartphone app to collect and analyze the image to determine the bacterial concentration. This all-in-one microfluidic biosensor enabled simple detection of Salmonella as low as 101.2 CFU mL−1 within 30 min and was featured with low cost, straightforward operation, and compact design. OBJECTIVE Salmonella Typhimurium is a significant zoonotic concern for human food poisoning and a substantial economic burden in the swine industry. We previously reported that nasally delivered chitosan-coated poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) encapsulating honeybee venom (CP-HBV) could enhance CD4+ T helper 1 (Th1)-related immune responses in healthy pigs. Building upon these findings, the current study aimed to investigate the protective immune enhancement by nasally delivered CP-HBV in pigs challenged with S Typhimurium. ANIMALS 36 healthy, 4-week-old, female, Landrace X Yorkshire X Duroc pigs. METHODS 36 pigs were allocated into 3 groups: CP-HBV (n = 16), control (n = 16), and healthy baseline control (n = 4). CP-HBV and control groups were challenged with S Typhimurium 7 days post-treatment. Pigs from the healthy control group were sacrificed at 0 days postinfection (DPI), and 4 pigs from each of the control and CP-HBV groups were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, and 7 DPI. Salmonella shedding, immune cell frequencies, cytokines, and transcriptional factor expression levels were measured. RESULTS The CP-HBV group exhibited lower bacterial shedding and an enhanced Th1-related immune response characterized by an upregulation of CD4+ T cells and CD4+ Interferon-γ+ T cells, accompanied by increased expression of Th1-related cytokines and reduced expression of regulatory T cells and immunosuppressive cytokines compared to the control group. Food poisoning is a major concern in catering services in Indonesia, with multiple outbreaks being reported in factories and offices. This study aimed to assess the level of food safety knowledge, personal hygiene practices, and microbiological quality of chicken and egg dishes at three catering companies in the Yogyakarta Special Region of Indonesia, which provide mass catering for workers. From March to July 2019, a cross-sectional study was conducted using validated questionnaires, observation checklists, and microbiological tests to measure the parameters of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Pearson and Rank-Spearman correlation tests, as well as independent sample t-tests, were used for statistical analysis. The study revealed that 75% of the subjects had limited knowledge of food safety, with only 5% having a good understanding. Furthermore, 95% of the subjects had not received any food safety training, resulting in poor hygiene practices among the food handlers. Although there was no significant correlation between food safety knowledge and hygiene practices (p>0.05), certain practices, such as appearance and hand washing, were significantly correlated with age. Employment duration was negatively correlated with food safety knowledge (p=0.027; r=-0.494). While chicken samples were free from E. coli and S. aureus, one egg sample was found to be contaminated with E. coli. The research emphasizes the significance of providing frequent food safety training to food handlers, ideally every year. Background & Objective: The role of the mothers is very important in providing care and monitor their children's health in general. Their awareness concerning quality of foods which is needed for each child's developmental stage can effect on nutritional status This Study assess the effect of an nutritional education Program on mother knowledge regarding their children nutritional status. Materials & Methods: Sixty moms were chosen from Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation International in Al-Samawah City and take on using a quasi-experimental design. The researcher used a non-probability "purposive sample" and measured the height and weight for child before calculating the body mass index. Results: The current study found a relationship between moms' educational level and knowledge regard to sociodemographic characteristics with a p-value of .001. However, there were no significant correlations observed between mothers' knowledge in the control group and their age, level of education, occupation, residency, monthly income, and sources of information. Conclusion: Following the interventional program on nutrition-related health, the level of knowledge among the mothers in the study group was enhanced. The study suggested that the nutrition education program should be offered to all moms in order to enhance their understanding and enthusiasm regarding the significance of child nutrition. Commercially produced and home-made raw meat-based pet diets are becoming increasingly popular and have been recognised as an emerging public health risk by the European Food Safety Authority. The aim of this study was to investigate risk perceptions and self-reported pet food preparation practices in the home setting among pet owners who feed raw meat-based diet to pets. An online questionnaire was distributed to pet owners through social media groups. Ultimately, 750 respondents were included in the detailed analysis, divided into two subgroups, a "raw group" consisted of pet owners who provided raw meat-based diets for pets (n = 382), while the "conventional group" consisted of pet owners who did not (n = 368). There was no significant difference between the two groups in overall risk perception. Only one third of respondents in both groups were aware of the potentially fatal consequences of food poisoning. Self-reported frequency of hand washing, and surface cleaning, were significantly higher (p = 0.000) in the raw group than the conventional group. Food safety malpractices were noted in the raw feeding group, with 47% reporting to rinsing raw peat meat before preparing it, and 42% thawing frozen raw peat meat at room temperature on the kitchen counter. The results provide information on the prevalence of feeding raw meat to pets among Slovenian pet owners and provides the basis for developing tailored food safety education campaigns to improve risk awareness and provide food safety recommendations for pet owners providing raw meat-based diets for pets in Slovenia. In Colombia, pesticide poisoning is the third most common cause of chemical intoxication. On 9 October 2022, an outbreak of ethion poisoning occurred in Pereira. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the outbreak.This is a descriptive study of an outbreak of organophosphate poisoning. The onset of symptoms occurred on 9 October 2022, following the consumption of empanadas. Information was collected on sociodemographic characteristics and clinical manifestations, as well as from paraclinical examinations. Data were obtained from clinical histories, field epidemiological investigations, and inspection visits. Food samples were collected for analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Attack rates, proportions, and measures of central tendency, dispersion, and position were calculated.The case definition was met by 37 individuals with a median age of 30 years; all presented with muscarinic symptoms, 29 patients presented with nicotinic symptoms, and 20 patients presented with neurological symptoms. Males were the most affected (57%), and the most common time of symptom onset was 10:00 am. Twenty-three patients (62%) required intensive care unit admission, of whom 14 (38%) required mechanical ventilation. No deaths were reported. Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity was reduced in all patients. Ethion was detected in mass-prepared maize and empanadas at concentrations greater than 0.1 mg/kg. The consumption of empanadas was identified as the common source.In Colombia, pesticide poisonings are the third most common type of poisoning caused by chemical substances reported to the National Health Institute through the National Public Health Surveillance System. In the present outbreak, ethion was in empanadas, likely due to contamination of cooking oil.We describe a large ethion-contaminated food poisoning outbreak reported in Colombia. The main symptoms were muscarinic, and the main treatment measures employed were atropine and respiratory support. Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) are economically important freshwater crustaceans. With the growth of the crayfish industry, the associated foodsafety risks should be seriously considered. Although Vibrio parahaemolyticus is commonly recognized as a halophilic foodborne pathogen associated with seafood, it has been found to be a major pathogen in crayfish-associated food poisoning cases. In this study, the V. parahaemolyticus contamination level in crayfish production-sale chain was investigated using crayfish and environmental samples collected from crayfish farms and markets. Serious V. parahaemolyticus contamination (detection rate of 66%) was found in the entire crayfish production-sale chain, while the V. parahaemolyticus contamination level of the market samples was extremely high (detection rate of 92%). The V. parahaemolyticus detection rate of crayfish surface was similar to that of whole crayfish, indicating that crayfish surface was important for V. parahaemolyticus contamination. The simulation experiments of crayfish for sale being contaminated by different V. parahaemolyticus sources were performed. All the contamination sources, containing V. parahaemolyticus-positive tank, water, and crayfish, were found to be efficient to contaminate crayfish. The crayfish tank displayed the most significant contaminating role, while the water seemed to inhibit the V. parahaemolyticus contamination. The contamination extent of the crayfish increased with the number of V. parahaemolyticus cells the tank carried and the contact time of the crayfish and the tank, but decreased with the time that the crayfish were maintained in the water. It was also confirmed that the crayfish surface was more susceptible to V. parahaemolyticus contamination than the crayfish intestine. Furthermore, the adsorption of V. parahaemolyticus onto the crayfish shell was analyzed. Over 90% of the V. parahaemolyticus cells were adsorbed onto the crayfish shell in 6 h, indicating a significant adsorption effect between V. parahaemolyticus and the crayfish shell. In conclusion, within a water-free sale style, the fresh crayfish for sale in aquatic products markets uses its shell to capture V. parahaemolyticus cells from the V. parahaemolyticusabundant environments. The V. parahaemolyticus contamination in crayfish for sale exacerbates the crayfish-associated food-safety risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Vibrionaceae family in retail seafood products available in the Qidong market during the summer of 2023 and to characterize Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates, given that this bacterium is the leading cause of seafood-associated food poisoning. We successfully isolated a total of 240 Vibrionaceae strains from a pool of 718 seafood samples. The breakdown of the isolates included 146 Photobacterium damselae, 59 V. parahaemolyticus, 18 V. campbellii, and 11 V. alginolyticus. Among these, P. damselae and V. parahaemolyticus were the predominant species, with respective prevalence rates of 20.3% and 8.2%. Interestingly, all 59 isolates of V. parahaemolyticus were identified as non-pathogenic. They demonstrated proficiency in swimming and swarming motility and were capable of forming biofilms across a range of temperatures. In terms of antibiotic resistance, the V. parahaemolyticus isolates showed high resistance to ampicillin, intermediate resistance to cefuroxime and cefazolin, and were sensitive to the other antibiotics evaluated. Most of the biogenic amines are naturally found in fermented foods as a consequence of amino acid decarboxylation. Their formation is ascribable to microorganisms (starters, contaminants and autochthonous) present in the food matrix. The concentration of these molecules is important for food security reasons, as they are involved in food poisoning illnesses. The most frequent amines found in foods are histamine, putrescine, cadaverine, tyramine, tryptamine, phenylethylamine, spermine and spermidine. One of the most risk-prone foods are cheeses, mostly ripened ones, which could easily accumulate amines due to their peculiar manufacturing process and ripening. Cheeses represent a pivotal food in our diet, providing for nutrients such as amino acids, calcium, vitamins and others; thus, since they are widely consumed, it is important to evaluate the presence of toxic molecules to avoid consumers' poisoning. This review aimed to gather general information on the role of biogenic amines, their formation, the health issues and the microorganisms and processes that produce/reduce them, with a focus on their content in different types of cheese (from soft to hard cheeses) and the biotic and abiotic factors that influence their formation or reduction and concentration. Finally, a multivariate analysis was performed on the biogenic amine content, derived from data available in the literature, to obtain more information about the factors influencing their presence in cheeses. Introduction: Data regarding the occurrence and virulence of Staphylococcus (S.) aureus in wild living animals is rare. However, S. aureus may carry a multitude of virulence factors and express resistance to several antimicrobial substances. Handling game meat may thus lead to serious infections or food poisoning. The aim of this study was to provide insights into the occurrence and characteristics of S. aureus in wild ungulates from Brandenburg, Germany. Methods: Nasal swabs of externally healthy-looking wild boars, roe, fallow and red deer were collected in hunts during season 2021/2022 and analyzed for S. aureus by selective enrichment. Species were determined using matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry and tested for phenotypic antimicrobial resistance. Whole-genome sequencing was conducted for genotyping, determination of virulence associated genes and analysis of phylogenetic relationships. Results: S. aureus were recovered from approximately 8% of nasal swabs. However, the strains were only obtained from the sampled wild ruminants. S. aureus isolates were associated with sequence types (ST) 1, ST30, ST133, ST425, ST582 and ST6238. Isolates of ST1 clustered closely together in the phylogenetic analysis. Genes encoding staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) or SE-like (SEl) were found in 14/17 isolates. In particular, a seh gene was present in 12/17 isolates. Moreover, two isolates harbored a multiplicity of genes encoding SE or SEl. In addition, the toxic shock syndrome toxin encoding tst gene was detected in one isolate. This isolate was resistant to penicillin and cefoxitin and accordingly harbored the blaZ gene. Discussion: Wild ungulates intended for human consumption may carry potentially virulent S. aureus. In one case, the close phylogenetic relationship of S. aureus isolates indicates a possible intraspecific spread within a common territory. However, for others, the origin or the spread pattern can only be inferred. Handling of animals or their carcasses might contribute to staphylococcal infections in humans. In this work, a smartphone-enabled enzyme cascade-triggered colorimetric platform was constructed using a cascade bio-nanozyme formed by immobilized glucose oxidase (GOx) on Fe 3 O 4 @Ag for rapid detection of S. aureus. Benefiting from reasonable experimental design, a bio-nanozyme cascade-triggered reaction was achieved through H 2 O 2 produced by GOx oxidation of glucose, followed by in situ catalysis of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by the inherent peroxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 @Ag to produce color signals. Staphylococcus aureus detection could be performed through naked-eye observation and smartphone measurement, and the developed assay can achieve quantitative and qualitative detection of S. aureus. The on-site nanoplatform had satisfactory specificity and sensitivity with a low detection limit of 6.9 cfu·mL−1 in 50 min. Food-borne toxocariasis caused by the consumption of raw meat or liver has occasionally been reported from East Asia. We treated a 38-year-old Japanese man who was infected with Toxocara in China and underwent a four-week treatment with albendazole. The liver and lung lesions disappeared after the treatment, suggesting that the treatment was successful. One month after the end of the treatment, the patient relapsed, and albendazole was administered again for eight weeks. The patient has remained relapse-free for one year. Although toxocariasis can heal spontaneously, in some cases, such as the present case, the disease relapses even after long-term treatment. In conclusion, different durations of treatment are recommended by various guidelines, and the duration of treatment needs to be modified with each case, considering the response to the treatment. Bacillus cereus sensu stricto is a foodborne pathogen that causes food poisoning. Their spore and biofilm-forming abilities persist in various environments and foods. This study investigated the prevalence, virulence, antibiotic resistance, and genetic diversity of B. cereus s. s. strains isolated from various food samples. Of 179 samples, 22.34% were positive for B. cereus s. s., with significantly high detection rates in milk products and raw chicken meat. Forty strains were isolated from positive samples. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight mass spectrometry analysis revealed nine distinct clusters and multi-locus sequence typing revealed 34 sequence types including 23 novel sequences, demonstrating high genetic diversity among the isolates. PCR analysis revealed that all the strains contained at least one toxin gene, but none contained the cytK gene. Antibiotic resistance tests revealed that all isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant, with high resistance levels, particularly to β-lactam antibiotics and vancomycin, but were susceptible to gentamicin. All isolates showed variations in biofilm formation. This study highlights the significant public health risk due to B. cereus s. s. and underscores the need for stringent monitoring and control measures in food production to manage antimicrobial resistance and ensure food safety. Staphylococcus aureus stands out as one of the most virulent pathogens in the genus Staphylococcus. This characteristic is due to its ability to produce a wide variety of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) and exotoxins, which in turn can cause staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), clinical syndromes such as skin infections, inflammation, pneumonia, and sepsis, in addition to being associated with the development of inflammation in the mammary glands of dairy cattle, which results in chronic mastitis and cell necrosis. SEs are small globular proteins that combine superantigenic and emetic activities; they are resistant to heat, low temperatures, and proteolytic enzymes and are tolerant to a wide pH range. More than 24 SE genes have been well described (SEA-SEE, SEG, SEH, SEI, SEJ, SElK, SElL, SElM, SElN, SElO, SElP, SElQ, SElR, SElS, SElT, SElU, SElV, SElW, SElX, SElY, and SElZ), being a part of different SFP outbreaks, clinical cases, and isolated animal strains. In recent years, new genes (sel26, sel27, sel28, sel31, sel32, and sel33) from SEs have been described, as well as two variants (seh-2p and ses-3p) resulting in a total of thirty-three genes from Ses, including the nine variants that are still in the process of genetic and molecular structure evaluation. SEs are encoded by genes that are located in mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids, prophages, pathogenicity islands, and the enterotoxin gene cluster (egc), and housed in the genomic island of S. aureus. Both classical SEs and SE-like toxins (SEls) share phylogenetic relationships, structure, function, and sequence homology, which are characteristics for the production of new SEs through recombination processes. Due to the epidemiological importance of SEs, their rapid assessment and detection have been crucial for food security and public health; for this reason, different methods of identification of SEs have been developed, such as liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), molecular methods, and whole-genome sequencing; providing the diagnosis of SEs and a better understanding of the occurrence, spread, and eradication of SEs. This review provides scientific information on the enterotoxins produced by S. aureus, such as structural characteristics, genetic organization, regulatory mechanisms, superantigen activity, mechanisms of action used by SEs at the time of interaction with the immune system, methods of detection of SEs, and recent biocontrol techniques used in food. The Clostridium perfringens epidemic threatens biosecurity and causes significant economic losses. C. perfringens infections are linked to more than one hundred million cases of food poisoning annually, and 8–60% of susceptible animals are vulnerable to infection, resulting in an economic loss of more than 6 hundred million USD. The enzymes and toxins (>20 species) produced by C. perfringens play a role in intestinal colonization, immunological evasion, intestinal micro-ecosystem imbalance, and intestinal mucosal disruption, all influencing host health. In recent decades, there has been an increase in drug resistance in C. perfringens due to antibiotic misuse and bacterial evolution. At the same time, traditional control interventions have proven ineffective, highlighting the urgent need to develop and implement new strategies and approaches to improve intervention targeting. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the spatial and temporal evolutionary characteristics, transmission routes, colonization dynamics, and pathogenic mechanisms of C. perfringens will aid in the development of optimal therapeutic strategies and vaccines for C. perfringens management. Here, we review the global epidemiology of C. perfringens, as well as the molecular features and roles of various virulence factors in C. perfringens pathogenicity. Objective: In 2004, after consuming angel-wing mushrooms, Pleurocybella porrigens, 59 incidents of food poisoning were reported in Japan. Consequently, 17 individuals died of acute encephalopathy. In 2023, we proved that a lectin, pleurocybelline, and pleurocybellaziridine from this mushroom caused damage to the brains of mice. Although we reported genomic and transcriptomic data of P. porrigens in 2013, the assembly quality of the transcriptomic data was inadequate for accurate functional annotation. Thus, we obtained detailed transcriptomic data on the fruiting bodies and mycelia of this mushroom using Illumina NovaSeq 6000. Results: De novo assembly data indicated that the N50 lengths for the fruiting bodies and mycelia were improved compared with those previously reported. The differential expression analysis between the fruiting bodies and the mycelia revealed that 1,937 and 1,555 genes were significantly up-regulated in the fruiting bodies and the mycelia, respectively. The biological functions of P. porrigens transcripts, including PA biosynthetic pathways, were investigated using BLAST search, Gene Ontology, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis. The obtained results revealed L-valine, a predicted precursor of PA, is biosynthesized in the fruiting bodies and mycelia. Background: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the most widespread bacterial pathogens in animals and humans, and its role as an important causative agent of food poisoning is well-documented. The aim of this study was to highlight and characterize the resistance patterns of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in charcuterie products sold in selected supermarkets (SM) in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Methods: In this study, 72 samples including ham (n = 19), merguez (n = 22), sausage (n = 15) and minced meat (n = 16) were collected from 3 supermarkets. Standard microbiology methods were utilised to characterise S. aureus isolates. Phenotypic resistance patterns were investigated using the disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar. Genotypic testing using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed on the isolates to detect the 16S-23S gene. Using specific primers, the following genes PVL, TSST-1, mecA, gyrA, gyrB, qnrA, intI1 and aac(6')-Ib-cr were identified from purified DNA by PCR. Results: Among the 72 ready-to-eat food samples, S. aureus was present in 51, (70.83%). The yield was highest in both the ham and merguez food products, 15/51 (29.41%) each, followed by minced meat 12/51 (23.53%) and sausage 9/51 (17.65%). A total of 35 isolates (68.63%) were confirmed as S. aureus after molecular characterization using 16–23 S primers with 05 (14.29%) strains identified as MRSA. All of the MRSA and majority of the methicillin-sensitive S.aureus (MSSA) isolates were resistant to penicillin G, ampicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin, whereas one isolate from minced meat was found in SM3-harbouring PVL, TSST-1, mecA, gyrA, gyrB and Int1 genes. Conclusions: Our study revealed a high prevalence of S. aureus in chacuterie products in Bobo-Dioulasso with antimicrobial profiles that show resistance to most antibiotics. These findings should inform and augment efforts to raise awareness among local supermarket owners on adequate food manufacturing practices as well as promoting food safety and hygiene. Background: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species are an emerging cause of intramammary infection, posing a significant economic and public health threat. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species in bovine milk and dairy farms in Northwestern Ethiopia and to provide information about their antibiotic susceptibility and virulence gene profiles. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from February to August 2022. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species were isolated from 290 milk samples. Species isolation and identification were performed by plate culturing and biochemical tests and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of each isolate was determined by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion test. The single-plex PCR was used to detect the presence of virulent genes. The STATA software version 16 was used for data analysis. The prevalence, proportion of antimicrobial resistance and the number of virulent genes detected from coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species were isolated in 28.6%, (95% CI: 23.5–34.2) of the samples. Of these, the S. epidermidis, S. sciuri, S. warneri, S. haemolyticus, S. simulans, S. chromogens, S. cohnii, and S. captis species were isolated at the rates of 11, 5.2, 3.4, 3.1, 3.1, 1, 1, and 0.7% respectively. All the isolates showed a high percentage (100%) of resistance to Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, and Cefotetan and 37.5% of resistance to Oxacillin. The majority (54.2%) of coagulase-negative isolates also showed multidrug resistance. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species carried the icaD, pvl, mecA, hlb, sec, and hla virulent genes at the rates of 26.5%, 22.1%, 21.7%, 9.6%, 9.6% and 8.4% respectively. Conclusion: The present study revealed that the majority of the isolates (54.2%) were found multidrug-resistant and carriage of one or more virulent and enterotoxin genes responsible for intramammary and food poisoning infections. Thus, urgent disease control and prevention measures are warranted to reduce the deleterious impact of coagulase-negative species. Foodborne illnesses caused by consuming contaminated fresh produce not only pose serious public health risks but also lead to huge economic losses. Rockmelons (cantaloupes) have emerged as a recurrent source of disease outbreaks caused by foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli. The most common factor of the outbreaks was the microbial contamination of rockmelons at the farm, and subsequently, the pathogenic bacteria were transferred to the flesh during cutting and processing. One of the deadliest outbreaks occurred in the USA due to L. monocytogenes contamination of rockmelons which caused 33 deaths in 2011. Since then, several guidelines and recommendations have been developed for food safety management to reduce the microbial contamination of melons on farms and post-harvest operations. This article explicitly provides an updated overview of microbiological contamination, disease outbreaks, pathogens prevalence, and mitigation strategies to reduce public health risks due to the consumption of rockmelons. Aims: Clostridium perfringens is one of the major anaerobic pathogen causing food poisoning and animal enteritis. With the rise of antibiotic resistance and the restrictions of the use of antibiotic growth promoting agents (AGPs) in farming, Clostridium enteritis and food contamination have become more common. It is time-consuming and labor-intensive to confirm the detection by standard culture methods, and it is necessary to develop on-site rapid detection tools. In this study, a combination of recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and lateral flow biosensor (LFB) was used to visually detect C. perfringens in chicken meat and milk. Methods and results: Two sets of primers were designed for the plc gene of C. perfringens, and the amplification efficiency and specificity of the primers. Selection of primers produces an amplified fragment on which the probe is designed. The probe was combined with the lateral flow biosensor (LFB). The reaction time and temperature of RPA-LFB assay were optimized, and the sensitivity of the assay was assessed. Several common foodborne pathogens were selected to test the specificity of the established method. Chicken and milk samples were artificially inoculated with different concentrations (1 x 10² CFU/mL to 1 x 106 CFU/mL) of C. perfringens, and the detection efficiency of RPALFB method and PCR method was compared. RPA-LFB can be completed in 20 min and the results can be read visually by the LFB test strips. The RPA-LFB has acceptable specificity and the lowest detection limit of 100 pg./μL for nucleic acid samples. It was able to stably detect C. perfringens contamination in chicken and milk at the lowest concentration of 1 x 104 CFU/mL and 1 x 10³ CFU/mL, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, RPA-LFB is specific and sensitive. Background: Oxford Nanopore provides high throughput sequencing platforms able to reconstruct complete bacterial genomes with 99.95% accuracy. However, even small levels of error can obscure the phylogenetic relationships between closely related isolates. Polishing tools have been developed to correct these errors, but it is uncertain if they obtain the accuracy needed for the high-resolution source tracking of foodborne illness outbreaks. Results: We tested 132 combinations of assembly and short- and long-read polishing tools to assess their accuracy for reconstructing the genome sequences of 15 highly similar Salmonella enterica serovar Newport isolates from a 2020 onion outbreak. While long-read polishing alone improved accuracy, near perfect accuracy (99.9999% accuracy or ~ 5 nucleotide errors across the 4.8 Mbp genome, excluding low confidence regions) was only obtained by pipelines that combined both long- and short-read polishing tools. Notably, medaka was a more accurate and efficient long-read polisher than Racon. Among short-read polishers, NextPolish showed the highest accuracy, but Pilon, Polypolish, and POLCA performed similarly. Among the 5 best performing pipelines, polishing with medaka followed by NextPolish was the most common combination. Importantly, the order of polishing tools mattered i.e., using less accurate tools after more accurate ones introduced errors. Indels in homopolymers and repetitive regions, where the short reads could not be uniquely mapped, remained the most challenging errors to correct. Conclusions: Short reads are still needed to correct errors in nanopore sequenced assemblies to obtain the accuracy required for source tracking investigations. Background: Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the most important leguminous crop around the world. Fusarium wilt incited by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris is a major biotic constraint in chickpea production. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of plant extracts, fungicides and bio-agents against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris under in vitro and field conditions. Methods: Plant extracts and fungicides were evaluated using poison food technique while antagonistic activity of bio-agents was studied using dual culture technique under in vitro conditions. Field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different plant extracts, fungicides and bio-agents against Fusarium wilt at Experimental Area of Plant Pathology, CCS HAU, Hisar. Result: Among thirteen plant extracts evaluated in vitro, neem leaves extract was found to be the most effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris followed by datura leaves’ and garlic cloves’ extract which were statistically at par. Out of six plant extracts tested against Fusarium wilt under field conditions, seed treatment with extracts of neem and datura leaves at 10% concentration were most effective and curtailed the wilt incidence by 39.02 and 34.14% along with 7.55 and 6.83% enhanced seed yield. Among fungicides, carbendazim 50 WP was the most toxic fungicide in restricting colony diameter of the pathogen with the least EC50 and EC90 values of 1.28 and 15.24 ppm a.i. followed by azoxystrobin 23 SC with corresponding values of 1.57 and 49.16 ppm a.i., respectively. Seed treatment with carbendazim 50 WP and azoxystrobin 23 SC were superior over other treatments and provided 88.41 and 85.98% reduction in disease incidence along with 12.85 and 10.99% higher seed yield over control. Among the bio-agents tested, T. viride and T. harzianum gave the best results in suppressing the pathogen growth in vitro and in minimizing the disease incidence coupled with improvement in seed yield under field conditions. It is an ingredient in many herbal and Ayurvedic preparations that are used against various ailments. The current study is aimed to systematically review and document findings on ethnobotany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, nutritive value and toxicity of the herb. The study is intended to overcome the inconsistency between the traditional and pharmacological applications of the herb concerning its folkloric use and offer novel insights for future researchers. The literature was systematically collected from various offline and online sources using relevant keywords. Electronic databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Springer Online, Research Gate, Scopus etc. were used to retrieve the relevant information. D. bulbifera L. is widespread in tropical and temperate regions of Asia, Africa and America. In traditional medicinal systems, it is used widely to cure sore throat, skin diseases, ulcers, boils, piles, pain, inflammation, dog bites, snake bites, food poisoning, asthma, cough, tuberculosis, cold, jaundice, malaria, typhoid of children, contraceptives, diabetes, ophthalmia, pink eye conjunctivitis etc. Among bioactive constituents, aglycone types of steroidal saponins dioscorin(e), dioscin(e), diosbulbin, and diosgenin possess significant biological activities. The chemical structures of the phytoconstituents presented in this review are drawn using ChemDraw Ultra software. The clinical studies included in this review have been performed to validate the folk usage of this herb. However, more studies are required to be done on scientific and clinical aspects to support its therapeutic applications. The updated information provided in this systematic review would open new perspectives for performing in-depth analysis of pharmacological research in future. Summary: Camellia sinensis var. shan is a special tea variety in Vietnam that is in high demand, especially its fermented products. This study compared the total polyphenol content (TPC), antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, and microbiome of a green Shan tea and a five‐year‐old fermented Shan tea. Folin–Ciocalteu, DPPH and SRB assays were used for TPC, antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity evaluation. The isolated microbes were morphologically and molecularly identified. The TPC (126.59 mg g−1) and antioxidant activity (IC50 of 284.82 μg mL−1) of the green tea were significantly higher than those of the fermented tea. However, the latter showed a significantly higher cytotoxicity against liver cancer cells (inhibiting 73.84% cells at 1 mg mL−1). Notably, the green tea had a negligible number of microbes, but the fermented tea had a much richer microbiome with Aspergillus restrictus (4.7 × 104 CFU g−1), A. ruber (1.76 × 103 CFU g−1), A. pseudoglaucus (1.32 × 103 CFU g−1), A. cibarius (8.8 × 102 CFU g−1), Bacillus cereus (1.13 × 104 CFU g−1), Peribacillus frigoritolerans (4.0 × 102 CFU g−1) and B. amyloliquefaciens (2.0 × 102 CFU g−1) present. These microbes are either harmless or beneficial, except for B. cereus (can cause food poisoning at >106 CFU g−1). The fermented tea would appear to have some advantages over the green tea. Botulism is one of the most serious food intoxications, manifesting as prolonged paralytic conditions. This disease is usually the result of the consumption of poor quality canned or smoked foods, so the inhabitants of many countries of the world are exposed to the risk of this kind of poisoning every year. In view of the severity of poisonings caused by botulinum neurotoxins, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) show great promise because of their targeting action, lack of allergic reactions and serum sickness. The use of a cocktail of mAbs increases the "functional specificity" of their mixture, allowing them to bind to the active domains of different toxin chains and block their action. In this work, we obtained 14 murine mAbs to the catalytic and receptor-binding domain of botulinum toxin type A. The Sp2/0-Ag14 murine myeloma cell line and splenocytes from immunized mice of the BALB/c line were used as fusion partners. We have shown that the selected cocktail of three antibodies neutralizes native toxin more effectively than antibodies separately—complete neutralization is achieved at a toxin dose of 3LD50 and partial neutralization at 5LD50. We presume that this cocktail may be promising as a prototype for the creation of a therapeutic drug capable of neutralizing the toxin in the blood of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Infections due to Citrobacter species are increasingly observed in hospitalized patients and are often multidrug-resistant. Yet, the magnitude and burden of Citrobacter spp. resistance in the hospital setting have not been reported. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of Citrobacter spp. infections among hospitalized patients, their main resistance patterns and Citrobacter spp. involvement in hospital outbreaks. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature (PROSPERO registration Jan-2023, CRD42023390084). We searched Embase, Medline and grey literature for studies on hospitalized patients diagnosed with Citrobacter spp. infections, and nosocomial outbreaks due to Citrobacter spp. published during the years 2000–2022. We included observational, interventional, surveillance studies and outbreak reports. Outcomes of interest were the frequency of Citrobacter spp. infections among hospitalized patients and 3rd generation cephalosporin and/or carbapenem resistance percentages in these infections. We used random-effects models to generate pooled outcome estimates and evaluated risk of bias and quality of reporting of outbreaks. Results: We screened 1609 deduplicated publications, assessed 148 full-texts, and included 41 studies (15 observational, 13 surveillance and 13 outbreak studies). Citrobacter spp. urinary tract- and bloodstream infections were most frequently reported, with Citrobacter freundii being the main causative species. Hospital-acquired infection occurred in 85% (838/990) of hospitalized patients with Citrobacter infection. After 2010, an increasing number of patients with Citrobacter spp. infections was reported in observational studies. Pooled frequency estimates for Citrobacter spp. infections could not be generated due to lack of data. The pooled prevalence of ESBL and carbapenemase producers among Citrobacter isolates were 22% (95%CI 4–50%, 7 studies) and 18% (95%CI 0–63%, 4 studies), respectively. An increased frequency of reported Citrobacter outbreaks was observed after 2016, with an infection/colonization ratio of 1:3 and a case-fatality ratio of 7% (6/89 patients). Common outbreak sources were sinks, toilets, contaminated food and injection material. Implemented preventive measures included environmental cleaning, isolation of positive patients and reinforcement of hand hygiene. Only seven out of 13 outbreaks (54%) were definitively controlled. Conclusion: This review highlights the clinical importance of endemic and epidemic Citrobacter spp. in healthcare settings. Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium‐contaminating milk and milk products causing food poisoning primarily due to its enterotoxins. A cross‐sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to June 2022 in Wolaita Sodo Town, to detect Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in raw cow's milk and assess their resistance levels to different antimicrobials. Purposive sampling was used to select 34 dairy farms. Accordingly, 419 raw milk samples from the farm and collection centers were collected. Isolates of S. aureus showing resistance to Cefoxitin were classified as MRSA. From the total 419 samples, 22.19% (93/419) were contaminated with S. aureus in dairy cows. The prevalence of S. aureus in raw milk, bulk milk from the farm, and bulk tank milk from the collection centers was 16.9%, 2.1%, and 3.1%, respectively. The risk of S. aureus contamination in dairy farm owners and milkers who do not take food safety training was 5.303 times higher than the risk of S. aureus contamination in dairy farm owners and milkers who take food safety training. The risk of S. aureus contamination in dairy farms kept under poor management system was 7.34 times more than that of dairy farms kept under good management. The cefoxitin disk diffusion method was used to detect MRSA, 57.14% being resistant to Cefoxitin in total while approximately 87.5% were sensitive to Sulfamethoxazole‐trimethoprim and Gentamycin, while Erythromycin registered 75%, Ciprofloxacin 62.5%, Chloramphenicol 62.5%, and Tetracycline 25%. This study revealed that MRSA exhibited a notable multidrug resistance pattern, encompassing resistance to multiple drugs, with a prevalence of 75%. Significantly, the hands of milkers and the milking containers emerged as pivotal sources of contamination. This underscores the crucial importance of maintaining stringent hygienic practices during the milking process, with particular emphasis on thorough cleaning and decontamination of utensils. Background: Salmonellosis is one of the most common food‐borne diseases in industrialised and developing countries. In recent year, an increase in antimicrobial resistance among different Salmonella serotypes has been observed. Objective: A cross‐sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolated from local chicken eggs in four selected towns in Ethiopia. Methods: A total of 115 eggs were examined to detect Salmonella by using standard microbiological methods. The susceptibilities of the isolates to nine antimicrobials were tested by the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method. Result: The study revealed that of the 115 eggs examined, 22 (19.1%) were positive for Salmonella of which 14 (12.2%) and 8 (7%) of the isolates were from shells and contents, respectively. The occurrence of Salmonella in egg shells and content and between different altitudes did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Most isolates were resistant to more than three antimicrobials with a high resistance to kanamycin, ampicillin, nalidixic acid, cotrimoxazole, oxytetracycline and chloramphenicol. Conclusion: The results indicate the potential importance of local chicken eggs as source of multiple antimicrobial‐resistant salmonellae and the need for proper cooking before consumption. Background: Fruit allergy usually presents with mild-to-moderate symptoms but serious systemic reactions, e.g., anaphylaxis, may also occur. Objective: This study aimed to examine the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with fruit allergy and fruitinduced anaphylaxis. Methods: Patients diagnosed with fruit allergy at Dı(skapı Hematology and Oncology Hospital and Bilkent City Hospital between January 2017 and January 2023 were included in the study. The diagnosis of anaphylaxis was made according to the European Allergy and Clinical Immunology Anaphylaxis Guideline. Results: During the study period, skin-prick tests with food allergens were performed on 9432 patients in our clinic, and fruit allergy was detected in 78 patients (0.82%). Five patients with inaccessible medical records were excluded from the study. 40 (54.8%) were boys. The median (interquartile range) age at the onset of symptoms was 72 months (12.5–144 months). Sixty-eight of the patients (93.2%) had a concomitant allergic disease, the most common of which was allergic rhinitis (n = 48 [65.8%]). The 73 patients had a history of reaction to 126 fruits. Twenty-five patients (19.8%) were allergic to multiple fruits. The most common fruit allergen was banana (22/126 [17.4%]), followed by peach (18/126 [14.2%]) and kiwi (17/126 [13.5%]). Mucocutaneous findings were observed most frequently after fruit consumption (120/126 [95.2%]). Anaphylaxis occurred in 17 patients (23.2%) with 21 fruits.The fruits most commonly associated with anaphylaxis were banana (6/21 [28.6%]) and kiwi (6/21 [28.6%]). Conclusion: Fruit allergy generally presents with mild symptoms, e.g., oral allergy syndrome, but severe systemic symptoms, e.g., anaphylaxis, can also be observed. Kiwi and banana are the fruits that most commonly cause anaphylaxis. Although more comprehensive studies are needed to comment on the development of tolerance, especially in patients with anaphylaxis, responsible fruit avoidance is still the most important strategy. S. aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus, has been recognized as a main cause of bovine mastitis and food poisoning. This study investigated the prevalence, antibiotic resistance, and phage-based biocontrol of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolated from raw milk of cows with subclinical mastitis. The results showed that the prevalence of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus was 12% (48/400) and 1.5% (6/400), respectively. The S. aureus isolates were highly resistant to penicillin (72.92%), erythromycin (43.75%), and tetracycline (39.58%). Out of 48 S. aureus isolates, 6 were identified as methicillin-resistant strains. Among them, one isolate was found to harbor the sea gene. A total of 5 phages were recovered from 50 pork and 50 chicken meat samples, 1 from pork and 4 from chicken meat samples. Phage PSA2 capable of lysing all 6 methicillin-resistant isolates was selected for characterization. The use of phage PSA2 completely inactivated methicillin-resistant S. aureus SA33 in raw milk at both 24 °C and 4 °C, indicating its potential as a promising antibacterial agent in controlling methicillin-resistant S. aureus in raw milk and treating bovine mastitis. Bacillus cereus is responsible for 1.4–12% food poisoning outbreaks worldwide. The safety concerns associated with the applications of B. cereus in health and medicine have been controversial due to its dual role as a pathogen for foodborne diseases and a probiotic in humans and animals. In this study, the pathogenicity of B. cereus GW-01 was assessed by comparative genomic, and transcriptome analysis. Phylogenetic analysis based on a single-copy gene showed clustering of the strain GW-01, and 54 B. cereus strains from the NCBI were classified into six major groups (I–VI), which were then associated with the source region and sequence types (STs). Transcriptome results indicated that the expression of most genes related with toxins secretion in GW-01 was downregulated compared to that in the lag phase. Overall, these findings suggest that GW-01 is not directly associated with pathogenic Bacillus cereus and highlight an insightful strategy for assessing the safety of novel B. cereus strains. Pathogenic bacteria are the cause of many human food poisonings during the consumption of contaminated poultry products. This study was conducted to investigate the difference in the microbial load of poultry carcasses slaughtered at different temperatures in water chillers in the slaughterhouses of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces, Iran. One hundred twenty samples were taken randomly, under sterile conditions from chillers with temperatures of 24, 10, and 4 °C. The total count of microorganisms and bacterial isolation was done according to the national standard of Iran. The results showed that 3.3% of the samples were above the permissible limit in terms of the number of microorganisms, and all the positive samples belonged to chillers with a temperature of 24 °C. Furthermore, 28.3% of the samples were positive for contamination with E. coli and the highest contamination belonged to the first chiller (24 °C). In addition, 16.2% of the samples were reported to be positive for Salmonella spp. This study showed that the cooling steps significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the number of microorganisms, E. coli and Salmonella spp. E. coli and Salmonella bacteria could be isolated from the studied poultry carcasses at all stages. Although the microbial load of carcasses decreases after cooling in chillers, due to cross-contamination with some bacteria, such as E. coli and Salmonella spp., there is a need to comply with health standards to modify the slaughter process and use other kinds of chillers that are not less carcasses combination such as air chillers instead of water chillers. A foodborne poisoning incident occurred in a street, Ouhai District, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province on May 9, 2023, which was caused by the accidental consumption of medicinal liquor containing aconitum alkaloids. Three individuals drank homemade aconite-containing medicinal liquor and were subsequently poisoned, of which two cases were severe, and one case was mild. All three patients exhibited symptoms such as numbness in the mouth, tongue and limbs, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision. Two of them successively entered a state of shock and coma, with an incubation period of approximately 30 minutes. Among seven samples of suspected homemade medicinal liquor, one sample tested positive simultaneously for aconitine, neaconitine, hypaconitine, and benzoylaconitine, with concentrations of 62.3 mg·L-1, 2.6 mg·L-1, 17.7 mg·L-1, and 31.6 mg·L-1, respectively. Four kinds of aconite alkaloids were detected in all the urine, blood, and vomit samples from the patients, and the most toxic aconitine was detected at levels of 1.5 μg·L-1, 5.9 μg·L-1, and 26.2 μg·L-1, respectively. Based on the field epidemiological investigation, combined with clinical manifestations and laboratory test results, it was determined that this incident was a case of food poisoning caused by the accidental consumption of medicinal liquor containing aconite. Due to timely rescue and proper treatment measures, all poisoned patients have recovered, with no fatalities. It is suggested that relevant authorities should strengthen the regulation of the processing and sale of aconite herbs and promote the awareness of food safety.

Methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can harm public health as they can cause widespread food poisoning and resistance to multiple antibiotics. Hence, our objective was to examine the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA among fish shops, utensils, and workers' hands in Mosul City. We were able to find the nuc and mecA genes in S. aureus and MRSA isolates, respectively, via the PCR approach. In March and April of 2023, one hundred samples randomly selected from fish and various other store surfaces in Mosul were taken for this inquiry. S. aureus isolates the nuc gene, which can be identified in 19% of the samples. The worker hand samples had eight of the top isolates, in contrast to the fish's three isolates out of twenty. Additionally, because the mecA gene existed in 12 of the 19 S. aureus isolates (63.2%), methicillin resistance was shown. The hand samples of the workers had a higher percentage of methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates 75% (6/8) than other samples. According to the study, a significant amount of S. aureus was showing in fish and associated utensils, revealing that the fishing industry was not suitably subsequent food safety laws. Mushroom poisoning contributes significantly to global foodborne diseases and related fatalities. Amanita mushrooms frequently cause such poisonings; however, identifying these toxic species is challenging due to the unavailability of fresh and intact samples. It is often necessary to analyze residues, vomitus, or stomach extracts to obtain DNA sequences for the identification of species responsible for causing food poisoning. This usually proves challenging to obtain usable DNA sequences that can be analyzed using conventional molecular biology techniques. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a DNA mini-barcoding method for the identification of Amanita species. Following the evaluation and optimization of universal primers for DNA mini-barcoding in Amanita mushrooms, we found that the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene sequence primer ITS-a was the most suitable DNA barcode primer for identifying Amanita species. Forty-three Amanita samples were subsequently amplified and sequenced. The sequences obtained were analyzed for intra- and inter-species genetic distances, and a phylogenetic tree was constructed. The findings indicated that the designed primers had strong universality among the Amanita samples and could accurately identify the target gene fragment with a length of 290 bp. Notably, the DNA mini-barcode accurately identified the 43 Amanita samples, demonstrating high consistency with the conventional DNA barcode. Furthermore, it effectively identified DNA from digested samples. In summary, this DNA mini-barcode is a promising tool for detecting accidental ingestion of toxic Amanita mushrooms. It may be used as an optimal barcode for species identification and traceability in events of Amanita-induced mushroom poisoning. This is the first study in which the impact of a new bio-packaging on histamine formation in mackerel was investigated. To monitor the preservation of fresh fish samples a treatment with innovative polymeric film and a soaking procedure in liquid new biomaterial was adopted. Ultra HPLC diode array detection (UHPLC-DAD) analyses for histamine monitoring were performed on fresh, packaged, and soaked mackerel samples at different time. The histamine content threshold value was up to 7 days, and after this period the results showed that histamine levels were affected by application of biomaterial. Significant increase was detected in sample that was not treated with biofilm. The new biofilm extended the shelf-life and reveals a promising packaging system to prevent histamine biosynthesis. Introduction: Human infections with the food-borne enteropathogen Campylobacter jejuni are responsible for increasing incidences of acute campylobacteriosis cases worldwide. Since antibiotic treatment is usually not indicated and the severity of the enteritis directly correlates with the risk of developing serious autoimmune disease later-on, novel antibiotics-independent intervention strategies with non-toxic compounds to ameliorate and even prevent campylobacteriosis are utmost wanted. Given its known pleiotropic health-promoting properties, curcumin constitutes such a promising candidate molecule. In our actual preclinical placebo-controlled intervention trial, we tested the anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects of oral curcumin pretreatment during acute experimental campylobacteriosis. Methods: Therefore, secondary abiotic IL-10-/- mice were challenged with synthetic curcumin via the drinking water starting a week prior oral C. jejuni infection. To assess anti-pathogenic, clinical, immune-modulatory, and functional effects of curcumin prophylaxis, gastrointestinal C. jejuni bacteria were cultured, clinical signs and colonic histopathological changes quantitated, pro-inflammatory immune cell responses determined by in situ immunohistochemistry and intestinal, extra-intestinal and systemic proinflammatory mediator measurements, and finally, intestinal epithelial barrier function tested by electrophysiological resistance analysis of colonic ex vivo biopsies in the Ussing chamber. Results and discussion: Whereas placebo counterparts were suffering from severe enterocolitis characterized by wasting symptoms and bloody diarrhea on day 6 post-infection, curcumin pretreated mice, however, were clinically far less compromised and displayed less severe microscopic inflammatory sequelae such as histopathological changes and epithelial cell apoptosis in the colon. In addition, curcumin pretreatment could mitigate pro-inflammatory innate and adaptive immune responses in the intestinal tract and importantly, rescue colonic epithelial barrier integrity upon C. jejuni infection. Remarkably, the diseasemitigating effects of exogenous curcumin was also observed in organs beyond the infected intestines and strikingly, even systemically given basal hepatic, renal, and serum concentrations of pro-inflammatory mediators measured in curcumin pretreated mice on day 6 post-infection. In conclusion, the anti-Campylobacter and disease-mitigating including anti-inflammatory effects upon oral curcumin application observed here highlight the polyphenolic compound as a promising antibiotics-independent option for the prevention from severe acute campylobacteriosis and its potential post-infectious complications. The postharvest rot fungus, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, poses a significant threat to the avocado trade in Ghana as it discounts both the quality and shelf life of freshly harvested avocado fruits. This study evaluated the biological effect of three bioagents, garlic, baking soda, and black pepper, on mitigating posthar-vest rots of avocado fruits caused by L. theobromae. Isolates of L. theobromae obtained from spoiled fruits were identified using morphological, molecular, and pathogenicity procedures. Eight isolates of L. theobromae were similar in morphology and pathogenicity and genetic markers (ITS). The three bioagents, garlic and pepper seed powder, and baking soda, were evaluated in vitro using the food poison technique at two concentrations, 10 g and 20 g per 100 ml of water. Garlic at 20 g/100 ml of water completely inhibited mycelium growth, followed with 10 g/l (7.8%), and baking soda at 20 g/l (32.6%). Further studies of these bioagents on fruit are recommended.
