Digital Twins (DTs) hold significant promise in addressing the challenges faced by food supply chains (FSCs). This paper aims to provide critical insights into the potential for Digital Twins to meet the key challenges of the FSC and establish a comprehensive conceptual framework for their implementation. Following a systematic literature review (SLR), the study identified 81 peer-reviewed, high-quality papers published over the last decade (2012–2023). The typology-driven thematic analysis emphasises the emergent nature of DTs within FSCs, highlighting their key characteristics including monitoring, real-time simulation, and scenario analysis. The identified characteristics, applications, implementation drivers and barriers of Digital Twin form the basis for a novel conceptual framework for implementing DTs in FSCs. Leveraging insights from Innovation Adoption Theory and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the study outlines a structured five step implementation process divided into three stages. Notably, technology assessment and performance evaluation emerge as two innovative steps necessary for the successful implementation of DTs specifically, not previously considered by the theory. The study identifies promising avenues for future research. Background/Objectives: Historically racialized status (HRS) and low socioeconomic position (SEP) are independent risk factors for food insecurity and poor academic achievement among college students. Despite increased enrollment of students from historically racialized groups and low SEP, little is known regarding the intersectional experience of these contemporary student characteristics with food security status or academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to examine the intersections of racialized status and SEP with food insecurity and academic achievement among undergraduate students attending a public university system in California. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1170 undergraduates who utilized their campus food pantry between June and August 2019 at nine University of California campuses. Racialized status and SEP were used to construct four distinct intersectional positions: (1) White, not low SEP (i.e., traditional students; reference), and three contemporary student groups: (2) White, low SEP; (3) HRS, not low SEP; and (4) HRS, low SEP. Using regression analyses, these intersectional positions were examined with food insecurity and grade point average (GPA), while controlling for other student characteristics. Results: HRS, low SEP students had significantly higher odds of experiencing food insecurity (OR = 2.72; 95% CI: 1.52-4.97) and lower GPA (B = -0.14, p = 0.05) than traditional students, after adjustment. Conclusions: Contemporary students are at increased risk of food insecurity and lower academic achievement compared to traditional students.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: School meals are an important source of nutrition for children and have been found to help mitigate food insecurity. This study evaluated the association between food insecurity and school meal participation and whether parental perceptions about school meals differ by food security status. METHODS: In May 2022, 1110 Californian parents of K-12 students shared their perceptions about school meals, including meal quality, healthiness, stigma, and benefits, as well as their childs participation in school meals, in an online survey. Household food security was determined using the USDA 6-item module. Logistic and Poisson regression models were used for analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of household food insecurity was 56.2% (69.6% in households of students eligible for free meals, 55.9% in reduced-price, and 38.3% in non-eligible). Many of the reported benefits of school meals (saving families money and time) were equally highly endorsed by parents with and without food insecurity (p > 0.05). Parents reporting food insecurity had less favorable perceptions of school meals and perceived more stigma (p < 0.05). Food insecurity was positively associated with breakfast participation, especially among elementary school students and students not eligible for free or reduced-price meals (FRPMs) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Food insecurity is prevalent among California families with school-age children, even in families not eligible for federal FRPMs. Food-insecure households have more negative perceptions of school meals and experience more stigma, though they also report higher breakfast participation. Improving school meal quality and appeal, ensuring parents are familiar with meal quality and healthfulness, and reducing stigma may ease food insecurity while improving childrens health.

ObjectivesUnhealthy diets and inadequate exercise are associated with chronic health conditions and excess mortality. Older African Americans do not meet dietary and exercise guidelines, and this may have worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic due to individual and environmental factors, including food insecurity. Studies evaluating these dynamics are essential for developing interventions. This narrative details a study protocol and data collection experiences during the pandemic.MethodsParticipants > 55 years African American old completed detailed food frequency, exercise, and food access questionnaires between October 2020 and July 2021. Observations of the study administrators (authors of this manuscript) for the duration of the study are presented. Details on the study design and reflections on the opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned are summarized. Future manuscripts will report data analysis of study findings.ResultsA total of 123 older African American adults participated in the study, and 118 (70% female) completed all three questionnaires. More than 50% of the participants had at least two primary chronic conditions. About 85% were fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Applying community-based participatory approaches, leveraging partnerships, and exercising flexibility approaches were pivotal to successfully implementing the study protocol.ConclusionsDespite challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, detailed data on older African American adults' diet and exercise habits were obtained. Our study design and experiences will benefit future researchers. More importantly, results from our study will inform interventions and policies aimed at minimizing consequences associated with poor diet and exercise habits during the pandemic among this vulnerable population.

Food insecurity is highly prevalent and linked to poorer diet and worse metabolic outcomes. Food insecurity can be stressful, and could elicit chronic psychological and physiological stress. In this study, we tested whether stress could be used to identify those at highest risk for worse diet and metabolic measures from food insecurity. Specifically, we hypothesized that cortisol (a physiological marker of stress) and perceived psychological stress would amplify the link between food insecurity and hyperpalatable food intake as well as metabolic measures. In a sample of 624 Black and White women aged 36-43 who participated in the NHLBI Growth and Health Study's midlife assessment, we assessed associations between food insecurity with hyperpalatable food intake (high fat + high sodium foods; high fat + high sugar foods; and high carbohydrate + high sodium foods), and metabolic measures (fasting glucose, insulin resistance, and waist circumference). We found that food insecurity was associated with higher levels of perceived stress (R2 = 0.09), and greater intake of high fat + high sugar (hyperpalatable) foods (R2 = 0.03). In those with higher cumulative cortisol (as indexed by hair cortisol), food insecurity was associated with higher levels of fasting glucose. Neither cortisol nor perceived stress moderated any other relationships, and neither variable functioned as a mediator in sensitivity analyses. Given these largely null findings, further research is needed to understand the role stress plays in the chronic health burdens of food insecurity.

Ensuring healthy and sustainable food systems in increasing social, economic, and ecological change is a key global priority to protect human and environmental health. Seafood is an essential component of these food systems and a critical source of nutrients, especially in coastal communities. However, despite rapid transformations in aquatic food systems, and our urgent need to understand them, there is a dearth of data connecting harvested food production to actualized food consumption. Many analyses suggest institutional, legal, or technological innovations to improve food systems, but few have analyzed the pathways through which people already gain access to nutritious food. Here, using a random forest model and cluster analysis of a nationally representative data set from Kiribati, we operationalize access theory to trace the flows of consumptive benefit in a fisheries-based food system. We demonstrate that the market access mechanism is the key mechanism mediating seafood access in Kiribati, but importantly, the highest seafood consumption households showed lower market access, pointing to the importance of non-market acquisition (e.g., home production and gifting). We reveal six distinct household strategies that employ different sets of access mechanisms to ensure high levels of local seafood consumption in different contexts. We demonstrate the impacts of these strategies on the composition of household seafoods consumed, stressing the need to support these existing successful strategies. Finally, we point to key policy and management insights (e.g., improved infrastructure, shifts in species management) that may be more effective in reinforcing these existing pathways than commonly proposed food system interventions.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity and metabolic diseases both disproportionately affect Hispanic children. Cross-sectional studies have linked food insecurity with adverse cardiometabolic markers, including elevated plasma triglycerides and glucose concentrations. However, the association between changes in food insecurity and changes in cardiometabolic markers in children remains to be explored. Furthermore, few studies have assessed the impact of school-based nutrition interventions on household food insecurity. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to assess the effect of the TX Sprouts intervention on household food insecurity and to examine the association between changes in household food insecurity and changes in cardiometabolic markers over 1 academic year. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from TX Sprouts, a cluster-randomized school-based gardening, cooking, and nutrition trial. The study enrolled 3rd-5th-grade students from 16 schools that served primarily (>50%) Hispanic families with low income in Austin, TX. Participants (n = 619) provided household food insecurity data and fasting lipid panels at both baseline and postintervention, ∼9 mo following. RESULTS: There was no intervention effect on household food insecurity. Independent of the intervention, a 1-point increase in food insecurity, indicative of becoming more food insecure, was associated with a 2.61 mg/dL increase in triglycerides (P = 0.001; 95% CI: 1.04, 4.19) at follow-up. Children who were food insecure at baseline and became food secure at follow-up had a mean 5.05 mg/dL decrease in triglycerides compared with a 7.50 mg/dL increase in triglycerides in children who remained food insecure throughout (95% CI: -23.40, -1.71, P = 0.023). There were no other associations between changes in food insecurity and cardiometabolic markers. CONCLUSION: Although the intervention did not improve food insecurity, reductions in food insecurity over 9 mo were associated with improved cardiometabolic markers in high-risk children, emphasizing the need for interventions targeting food insecurity. College student food insecurity (FI) is a public health concern. Programming and policies to support students have expanded but utilisation is often limited. The aim of this study was to summarise the barriers to accessing college FI programming guided by the social ecological model (SEM) framework. A scoping review of peer-reviewed literature included an electronic search conducted in MEDLINE, ERIC, and PubMed databases, with a secondary search in Google Scholar. Of the 138 articles identified, 18 articles met eligibility criteria and were included. Articles primarily encompassed organisational (17/18) level barriers, followed by individual (15/18), relationship (15/18), community (9/18), and policy (6/18) levels. Individual barriers included seven themes: Knowledge of Process, Awareness, Limited Time or Schedules, Personal Transportation, Internal Stigma, Perception of Need, and Type of Student. Four relationship barriers were identified: External Stigma, Comparing Need, Limited Availability Causes Negative Perceptions, and Staff. Ten barrier themes comprised the organisational level: Application Process, Operational Process, Location, Hours of Operation, Food Quality, Food Quantity, Food Desirability or Variety of Food, Marketing Materials, Awareness of the Program, and COVID-19 Restrictions. Two barrier themes were identified at the community level, Public Transportation and Awareness of SNAP, while one barrier theme, SNAP Eligibility and Process, encompassed the policy level. Higher education stakeholders should seek to overcome these barriers to the use of food programmes as a means to address the issue of college FI. This review offers recommendations to overcome these barriers at each SEM level.

The global population consumes more seafood from aquaculture today than from capture fisheries and although the aquaculture industry continues to grow, both seafood sectors will continue to be important to the global food supply into the future. As farming continues to expand into ocean systems, understanding how wild populations and fisheries will interact with farms will be increasingly important to informing sustainable ocean planning and management. Using a spatially explicit population and fishing model we simulate several impacts from ocean aquaculture (i.e., aggregation, protection from fishing, and impacts on fitness) to evaluate the mechanisms underlying interactions between aquaculture, wild populations and fisheries. We find that aggregation of species to farms can increase the benefits of protection from fishing that a farm provides and can have greater impacts on more mobile species. Splitting total farm area into smaller farms can benefit fishery catches, whereas larger farms can provide greater ecological benefits through conservation of wild populations. Our results provide clear lessons on how to design and co-manage expanding ocean aquaculture along with wild capture ecosystem management to benefit fisheries or conservation objectives.

In the United States, college students experience disproportionate food insecurity (FI) rates compared to the national prevalence. The experience of acute and chronic FI has been associated with negative physical and mental health outcomes in this population. This narrative review aims to summarize the current methodologies for assessing health outcomes associated with the experience of FI in college students in the United States. To date, assessing the health outcomes of FI has predominately consisted of subjective assessments, such as self-reported measures of dietary intake, perceived health status, stress, depression, anxiety, and sleep behaviors. This review, along with the emergence of FI as an international public health concern, establishes the need for novel, innovative, and objective biomarkers to evaluate the short- and long-term impacts of FI on physical and mental health outcomes in college students. The inclusion of objective biomarkers will further elucidate the relationship between FI and a multitude of health outcomes to better inform strategies for reducing the pervasiveness of FI in the United States college student population.

The relationship between food insecurity and transactional sex is well recognized, but less is known about this relationship among adolescents. We analyzed cross-sectional baseline data from 3,130 female secondary students aged 12-19 enrolled in a three-arm, cluster randomized controlled trial to examine the association between food insecurity and transactional sex. The explanatory variable was food security and the outcome was ever engaging in transactional sex. Over one quarter (28.7%) reported any food insecurity and 1.9% of all participants (9.6% of sexually active participants) reported ever engaging in transactional sex. In adjusted models, ever experiencing any food insecurity was associated with a higher prevalence of ever transactional sex (PR: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.02, 2.49) compared to little to no food insecurity. These results provide insight into potential predictors of higher-risk sexual behavior in Rwanda; they also provide policy-makers with populations with whom to intervene on upstream determinants of transactional sex, notably poverty and food insecurity.

Fresh food is rich in nutrients but is usually seasonal, perishable, and challenging to store without degradation of quality. The inherent limitations of various preservation technologies can result in losses in all stages of the supply chain. As consumers of fresh foods have become more health-conscious, new technologies for intelligent, energy-efficient, and nondestructive preservation and processing have emerged as a research priority in recent years. This review aims to summarize the quality change characteristics of postharvest fruits, vegetables, meats, and aquatic products. It critically analyzes research progress and applications of various emerging technologies, which include: the application of high-voltage electric field, magnetic field, electromagnetic field, plasma, electrolytic water, nanotechnology, modified atmosphere packaging, and composite bio-coated film preservation technologies. An evaluation is presented of the benefits and drawbacks of these technologies, as well as future development trends. Moreover, this review provides guidance for design of the food supply chain to take advantage of various technologies used to process food, reduce losses and waste of fresh food, and this improve the overall resilience of the supply chain. The article analyzes the concept of "administrative-legal provision of food security," which is a relevant area of research in the context of global challenges and threats. Food security plays a key role in the stability of the state, ensuring the population's access to quality food products. In this regard, administrative and legal measures become especially significant, as they regulate and control food resources. The second aspect of the research focuses on defining the essence of administrative-legal provision as a complex system of measures, tools, and procedures aimed at implementing state policy in the field of food security. The author offers a critical analysis of existing approaches to understanding this category and provides a personal definition based on modern lega l doctrines. The study reviews the main legal acts regulating food security issues in Ukraine and analyzes international experience. Emphasis is placed on the importance of administrative control and oversight over the implementation of state programs that ensure the availability of sufficient food supplies and access to them for the population. Special attention is given to the problems of legal regulation in crisis situations, such as military conflicts, economic crises, or natural disasters. The author emphasizes that under such conditions, administrative-legal mechanisms must be flexible and adaptive to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the food sector. The article examines the administrative-legal category of "food security" as a key aspect of state policy, ensuring the resilience of food systems in the face of modern challenges. The author explores the essence of food security through the lens of administrative-legal regulation, focusing on the state's role in shaping effective management mechanisms for food resources. In particular, the article analyzes how legal norms affect various stages of agro-industrial production and the distribution of products, from land use to food safety control. In conclusion, the author argues that the administrative-legal provision of food security requires constant improvement in light of new societal challenges. Background: Healthy food nudges may be more, or especially, effective among groups experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. We investigated the modifying role of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics in the effectiveness of nudge interventions targeting healthy foods in real-world grocery store settings on food purchasing patterns. Methods: We pooled individual participant data from multiple trials. Eligible trials were identified via a PubMed search and selected based on having a controlled real-world design, testing a nudging intervention promoting healthy purchases, while collecting participants' sociodemographic and purchasing data. Out of four eligible trials, three had longitudinal measurements, one consisted of a single time point, two were randomised and two were not. Applied nudges consisted of a combination of placement nudges (focussing on availability or positioning) and property nudges (presentation and/or information). Harmonised data included dichotomised socioeconomic and demographic variables and the percentage of purchased fruits and vegetables of total purchases. Multilevel meta-regression based on linear mixed-effects models were used to explore modifying effects using two approaches: longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses. Results: The analytical sample in the longitudinal analysis comprised of 638 participants, who were predominantly female (76.3%), had a lower education attainment (67.7%), and a mean age of 46.6 years (SD 13.5). These characteristics were similar in the cross-sectional analysis (n = 855). Compared to control group participants, there was no main effect of healthy food nudges on the percentage of fruit and vegetable purchases by intervention group participants in the longitudinal analysis (β = 0.00; 95%CI -0.03, 0.09). This main effect was not modified by educational attainment (βgroup*higher education = -0.06; -0.40, 0.02), sex (βgroup*females = 0.13; -0.00, 0.61) nor age (βgroup*older adults = -0.05; -0.39, 0.02). Results from the cross-sectional analysis were comparable. Conclusions: This pooled analyses of four controlled trials did not find evidence supporting the hypothesis that grocery store nudge interventions of healthy foods work more effectively among groups experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. Future studies are needed to address the identified limitations through rigorous trial design using comprehensive interventional strategies, standardised outcome measures, while also evaluating context-specific approaches. Such insights will help to better understand the equity of nudging interventions in grocery store settings and the potential for reducing diet-related health disparities. The migration and wintering of the Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) is the least known of the other common nesting thrushes in Europe. It is also an understudied species in Hungary, detailed studies having been carried out nearly 50 years ago. The aim of the present study was to summarise the data on migration and wintering of this species that have been collected over the last 20 years in Kevermes, southeastern Hungary. There is no breeding population of the species either here or in the surrounding area. The species was observed on 371 of the 2,807 days of field observations. The first individuals typically arrived in the second week of October, but there are also data from late September and early October. Its migration is characterized by several peaks. In spring, it was still migrating intensively in the first half of April, with the last individuals leaving the area by the end of the month. In recent years, they have appeared earlier in the autumn and left later in the spring, which may coincide with the increasing breeding population of the species in Hungary. The number of individuals observed was higher in spring than in autumn and winter, similar to the situation in other parts of the country. The number of birds was high every second or third year. The number of observations in the same seasons of different years showed different patterns as well as the autumn observations did not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the number of observations later in winter and spring. The most important food was the common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), which was protected against the Fieldfares (T. pilaris). Comparing the two species, the migratory patterns were basically similar, but the seasonal abundance of the two species differed in certain years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Practical Application Tartary buckwheat, a protein‐rich pseudocereal with anti‐diabetic effects, has not yet been fully explored as a source of dipeptidyl peptidase‐IV (DPP‐IV) inhibitory peptides. This study aims to discover novel DPP‐IV inhibitory peptides from tartary buckwheat protein (TBP). Five hydrolysis methods were employed, with simulated gastrointestinal digestion (SGID) releasing the most active DPP‐IV inhibitory hydrolysates, showing both the highest degree of hydrolysis (22.66 ± 1.12%) and inhibition activity (41.81 ± 1.52% at 1.25 mg/mL). In addition, ultrafiltration enriched the <3 kDa fraction with the highest inhibitory rate, and further purification using reverse‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography concentrated the DPP‐IV inhibitory peptides in the first fraction (F1). Nano liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry analysis identified 10 new peptides in F1, among which the peptide Leu‐His‐Ile‐Val‐Gly‐Pro‐Asp‐Lys (LHIVGPDK) exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect, with an IC50 value of 1.61 mM. Kinetic studies revealed that LHIVGPDK acts as a mixed‐type inhibitor, and molecular docking indicated that it inhibits DPP‐IV by forming stable complexes through five types of interactions, with hydrogen bonds playing a key role. This study underscores TBP's DPP‐IV inhibitory potential and anti‐diabetic properties, reinforcing the value of tartary buckwheat as a beneficial food for diabetes management.This research identified new peptides from Tartary buckwheat protein that effectively inhibit DPP‐IV, an enzyme associated with diabetes management. Objective: To identify signs of food insecurity (FI) and coping strategies among university students from three minority groups. Participants: Participants consisted of 3155 university students: 25.58% first-generation, 16.86% nonwhite, and 4.63% international. Methods: Students answered a questionnaire composed of the 2-item Hunger Vital Sign for food security, and questions about demographics, food campus resources, and coping strategies. Results: Among the three minorities, most students (53-57%) reported being food insecure. The food insecurity status was associated with being a senior, or graduate student, having participated in high school food programs, and use of university food resources in all minority groups. Also, a variation in the use of coping strategies to obtain food was reported among minority groups. Conclusion: There is a need to articulate minorities' awareness and use of the university's nutritional resources to face the high rates of FI. Background: To improve the healthfulness of foods offered while accelerating the use of environmental sustainability practices, it is important to engage hospital food service operators in the adoption of such practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers, facilitators and best practices for implementing environmental sustainability standards in food service among veterans affairs (VA) hospitals in the United States. Methods: We conducted an online survey with 14 VA hospital food service directors and then 11 qualitative interviews. The survey assessed motivations for initiating sustainability standards and included a self‐rating of implementation for each of five standards: increasing plant‐forward dishes, procuring and serving sustainable foods that meet organic/fair trade and other certifications, procuring and serving locally produced foods, reducing food waste and reducing energy consumption. Interviews were transcribed verbatim. Qualitative analysis, including coding of themes and subthemes, was conducted by two coders to determine barriers, facilitators and best practices for each of these five standards. Quantitative methods (counts and frequencies) were used to analyse the survey data. Results: Participants had an average of 5 years of experience implementing sustainability standards. The top three motivators cited were reducing food waste, serving healthier foods and increasing efficiency or cost savings. Barriers revolved around patient preferences, contractual difficulties and costs related to reducing waste. Facilitators included taste testing new recipes that include more sustainable food options and easy access to sustainable products from the prime vendor. Best practices included making familiar dishes plant‐forward and plate waste studies to prevent overproduction. Conclusions: Although there were many barriers to implementation, food service directors had solutions for overcoming challenges and implementing food service sustainability standards, which can be tested in future sustainability initiatives. Key points: There have been several studies of sustainable food service standards in hospital settings, yet few have examined how these sustainable food service practices are implemented in day‐to‐day operations in veterans affairs hospitals throughout the United States. The study findings revealed many best practices that can be tested in the future, including increasing plant‐forward dishes by modifying familiar dishes and making them plant‐forward, procuring locally produced foods by beginning with the highest‐quality product to purchase locally and having a garden onsite at the hospital and reducing food waste by food tracking studies to prevent overproduction and a food donation programme. Time and temperature are the crucial factors affecting the quality of perishable products. The device capable of recording temperature fluctuation and maintaining time has huge practical potential. In this research, a novel thermal history indicator (THI) was proposed based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with the irreversible color change performance. The color change and absorbance of the THI were investigated over a broad monitoring temperature range (− 22 ~ 55 ℃) and were closely correlated with its thermal accumulation over time and temperature. The activation energy (Ea) of the THI was calculated to be 55.31 kJ mol−1, which can be used to monitor the perishable products with deterioration reaction Ea ranging from 30.31 to 80.31 kJ mol−1. In addition, the THI also demonstrated the significant response to the environmental temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the potential applications were evaluated by recording the changes of the THI gel and the total viable count (TVC) of food under the same conditions. The results indicated that the digital images of the colorimetric THI gel were correlated with TVC of food at 4 ℃ and 25 ℃, respectively. The application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has gained significant importance in the past decade, particulary in the context of food analysis, including potatoes. However, the current literature lacks a comprehensive systematic review of the application of this technique in potato cultivation. Therefore, the aim of this work was to conduct a systematized review by analysing the most relevant compounds, diseases and stress factors in potatoes using hyperspectral imaging. For this purpose, scientific studies were retrieved through a systematic keyword search in Web of Science and Scopus databases. Studies were only included in the review if they provided at least one set of quantitative data. As a result, a total of 52 unique studies were included in the review. Eligible studies were assigned an in-house developed quality scale identifying them as high, medium or low risk. In most cases the studies were rated as low risk. Finally, a comprehensive overview of the HSI applications in potatoes was performed. It has been observed that most of the selected studies obtained better results using linear methods. Non-grain expansion in rural China has affected the stability of cultivated land structure and the sustainability of ecosystem services (ESs). Delving into the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of ES interactions is essential for refined and differentiated cultivated land management practices. Taking Tongxiang City as an example, this study mapped the variations of four ESs of cultivated land from 2000–2020, identified their socio-ecological drivers, explored the spatial non-stationarity characteristics of trade-off/synergy among different ESs, and proposed a zoning control framework for cultivated land. The results indicated that (1) food supply (FS) and habitat quality (HQ) decreased by 40.40% and 1.27%, respectively, while carbon sequestration (CS) and soil conservation (SC) increased by 8.5% and 26.21%, respectively. Areas of decreased ES were mainly concentrated in the southwest, while areas of increased ES supply were dispersed. (2) CS-SC and CS-FS ES pairs exhibited obvious trade-offs, with concave trade-offs dominating between 2000 and 2010, and convex trade-offs prevailing from 2010 to 2020. These ES trade-offs were mainly distributed in the southeast and northern regions. HQ-CS and FS-SC presented significant synergies, predominantly characterized by linear synergy and situated in the northern and central areas. (3) The spatial differentiation of ESs was mostly explained by landscape configuration drivers. (4) Different cultivated land zones were delineated based on the spatial non-stationarity of trade-offs/synergies and ES advantage areas. It is possible to boost nutrient accumulation in grain, enhance grain production, and enhance the soil's physical characteristics through the use of bio-fertilizers, zinc delivery methods, and organic and inorganic fertilizers integrated in a balanced manner. Often, zinc (Zn) is insufficient in soil due to a lack of organic matter additions to the soil. The world's food supply is secured by Zn, a crucial micro nutrient. The effect of different zinc application methods and integrated nutrient management methods were tested on wheat crops based on crop production, nutrient uptake, and soil physico-chemical characteristics. Three distinct bio fertilizers, namely Azotobacter, Phosphate solubilizing bacteria, and Zn solubilizing bacteria were used in the experiment. There was a significantly greater number of effective tillers m−2 to the tune of 385 and 388 tillers m−2 and DTPA exchangeable Zn in the final soil of about 0.70 mg/kg with the soil and foliar application of zinc compared with the other treatments. A variety of integrated nutrient management treatments increased crop productivity and soil physico-chemical parameters by increasing soil nutrient availability. The current study indicates that adding organic manure is essential to sustainably preserving soil quality and crop productivity. A series of biodegradable colorimetric films were prepared by using chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol as matrix, in which, the weight ratio of chitosan: Polyvinyl alcohol was 100: 0, 80: 20, 50: 50, 20: 80, or 0: 100, with addition of 10% (w/w, relative to chitosan) anthocyanins extracted from purple tomatoes (purple tomatoes anthocyanin) as pigment. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of weight ratio (chitosan: Polyvinyl alcohol) on the mechanical properties, contact angle, swelling rate, pH sensitivity, antioxidant properties of chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol/purple tomatoes anthocyanins films, and the antibacterial activity of films produced for pork packaging. In addition, the films as a smart colorimetric indicator for monitoring the freshness of pork was investigated. The results showed that as the ratio of chitosan to polyvinyl alcohol decreases, the elongation at break, hydrophilicity, and swelling rate of the films increased especially from 16.5% to 174.2% for elongation at break and 93.0° to 53.8° for water contact angle, however, the tensile strength decreased from 67.3 to 24.7 MPa. With decreasing of chitosan: Polyvinyl alcohol, the antibacterial activity on pork was decreased, and the antioxidant properties of films increased first then decreased. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated there were interactions among chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and purple tomatoes anthocyanins. The color response of films was depended on pH, as well as the immersion time. The longer immersion resulted in a more pronounced color change. The color changed from purplish red (pH 2–4) to green (pH 5–10) to yellow (pH 10–12). In monitoring the freshness of pork, the film showed a nice visual color change, indicating a potential application in smart packaging. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration has implemented a three-tier quality control system to enhance food safety. This system includes self-management of food businesses, external certification, and government inspection. Ten categories of food businesses are required to comply with this system. By the end of 2023, over 90% of the food businesses successfully completed the second-tier certification. Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between non-conformity counts and factors such as capital amount, food industry type, or times of certifications. Non-conformity issues mainly arose from violations of good hygiene practices and discrepancies between the actual execution and the established hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system in food businesses. These issues, potentially due to a lack of hygiene and safety awareness among employees, will not cause an immediate hazard for the time being but allow for early identification of potential risks, thereby improving overall food safety. If the study of garden history, as traditionally conceived, requires a justification, a pertinent line of inquiry lies in the explication of the diverse roles that gardens played in the context of the early modern city. This discussion, however, is hindered by the anachronistic opposition between utility and pleasure, in addition to pervasive paradisiacal and pastoral associations that perpetuate a distinctly elitist image of these amenities. This article, using the example of sixteenth- through eighteenth-century Florence, challenges such assumptions by interpreting the network of recreational and productive properties within the city as an informal green infrastructure, reintegrating their narratives into the broader history of public space. By revaluating the social and economic meanings of gardens through the dual lenses of their accessibility and their productive use, this analysis shows specific ways in which they defined the urban landscape of early modern Italy, while also suggesting how they may have been experienced by nonelite visitors. Disruptions in the global food supply caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions have exposed significant vulnerabilities in food distribution systems. Designing resilient food supply chain (FSC) networks that have the flexibility to react swiftly to disruptions while ensuring fair and equitable access to quality food is vital. This study proposes a flexible multi-objective mixed-integer programme (FMOMIP) to jointly address resilience and equity during disruptions. The proposed FMOMIP aims to satisfy demand equitably while minimising food loss and overall costs in a multi-echelon FSC network. In the event of disruption, the equity weights, obtained through a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework, are applied to revise the distribution plan and minimise the inequity and food loss in the network. The proposed model is tested under various disruption scenarios, considering the case of the Targeted Public Distribution System in India during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings suggest that the existing storage and distribution network may be altered during disruptions to ensure equitable access to food at all demand points. Additionally, the impact of equity and other objectives on multi-echelon FSCs varies depending on the kind of disruption experienced by the system. Hence, we propose that food distribution organisations and government agencies should consider designing FSC networks that can react with higher responsiveness and incorporate equity perspectives instead of adopting a purely cost-oriented approach. Understanding global food production and productivity patterns is crucial for policy and investment decisions aimed at addressing poverty, food insecurity, and climate change. This paper develops comprehensive calorific-based production and yield indices for 144 crops, covering 98% of global agricultural land and food output. These indices provide standardized measures across various crops and varieties, facilitating comparison of agricultural productivity and consolidating country and regional contributions to global food production. Utilizing a Box-Cox transformation, we find that a linear model best approximates yield growth. Our findings reveal that, at an aggregate level, there has been no discernable slowdown in global yield growth over the past six decades. This translates into an average annual yield increase equivalent to nearly 33 kilograms of wheat per hectare. These results suggest that any observed deceleration in specific commodities, regions, or countries, has been offset by gains in others. While these findings are reassuring from a global food supply perspective, caution is warranted about the sustainability of production and the affordability of food. These concerns are particularly relevant as global food demand increases due to population and income growth, and as the pressures from climate change intensify. ABSTRACT Echinothrips americanus Morgan (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), also known as poinsettia thrips, has invaded several parts of the world becoming an important pest in many vegetable and ornamental crops. While biological control methods using predatory mites and bugs have been effective against flower‐dwelling thrips, they have shown limited success against leaf‐dwelling thrips like E. americanus. Franklinothrips vespiformis Crawford (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae) is a leaf‐dwelling predatory thrips that may offer a more effective solution due to its overlapping habitat with E. americanus which increases the likelihood of predator–prey interactions. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of F. vespiformis for controlling E. americanus populations in sweet pepper under greenhouse conditions. We also investigated whether supplementing the releases of the predator with Artemia franciscana Kellogg (Branchiopoda: Artemiidae) cysts would enhance the pest control efficacy of F. vespiformis. Our results showed a 93% decrease in the total E. americanus population with releases of F. vespiformis alone and a 98% decrease when the releases of F. vespiformis were supplemented with A. franciscana cysts, both of which were statistically significant compared to the control treatment. There was no significant difference between the two F. vespiformis treatments. Similarly, the abundance of both adults and immature stages of E. americanus was significantly reduced in the presence of F. vespiformis, regardless of the addition of supplementary food. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of F. vespiformis for the biological control of E. americanus and probably other leaf‐dwelling thrip pests in sweet pepper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the pivotal role of the egg industry in the food supply chain, the absence of regular surveys over the past decades in Taiwan has resulted in a dearth of national-level data. This study endeavours to address the research void surrounding biosecurity while scrutinizing the technical efficiency of egg producers in an environment where there is no mandate to phase out battery cage systems and farmers have the autonomy to adjust their feeding strategies. We employ the stochastic frontier analysis framework to analyse farm-level data derived from a 2020 national survey of the egg industry in Taiwan, which includes 547 commercial egg farms, with 519 still utilizing battery cages and 28 farms having transitioned into alternative systems to meet higher Farm Animal Welfare standards. Our findings reveal that egg farmers who prioritize the improvement of biosecurity demonstrate greater technical efficiency. When considering the rearing systems, there is no significant difference in egg production rates between conventional and alternative systems. However, conventional systems exhibit higher efficiency in terms of total output. In essence, elevating FAW standards does not exert a discernible impact on the productivity of laying hens. Background: Consumption of locally produced foods is generally perceived as being part of a healthy dietary pattern. Accordingly, in 2020, the provincial government of Québec (Canada) promoted the purchase of local foods for economic and health benefits. The present cross-sectional study aimed to document the association between the behavior of local food procurement and overall diet quality in a sample of adults from the province of Québec. Methods: Data were collected in a sample of 834 adults (86.6% females) from the NutriQuébec project, a web-based longitudinal population study that aims to document the lifestyle and eating habits of adults in Québec, Canada. Dietary intakes were measured using a validated web-based 24-h recall tool and diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Food Index (HEFI-2019), which measures adherence to the 2019-Canada's Food Guide recommendations on healthy food choices. Local food procurement behavior was measured using the Locavore-I-SF score, which assesses the frequency of short food supply chain use as well as the geographical origin of three locally produced foods. Results: The Locavore-I-SF score was weakly correlated with the HEFI-2019 score (r = 0.08, p < 0.02). Positive correlations were observed for the Vegetables and fruits (r = 0.09, p = 0.005), Beverages (r = 0.08, p = 0.04) and Free sugars (r = 0.14, p < 0.001) components of the HEFI-2019. Associations between the Locavore-I-SF and the HEFI-2019 scores were found in specific subgroups of participants: males (r = 0.33, p < 0.001), participants aged between 50 and 70 years (r = 0.16, p = 0.003), participants with a greater education level (r = 0.13, p = 0.003) and higher income (r = 0.12, p = 0.02), non-vegetarian participants (r = 0.10, p = 0.008) and participants living in Census Metropolitan Areas (r = 0.11, p = 0.004). Conclusion: These results suggest that the behavior of local food procurement is only weakly associated with better overall diet quality among a sample of adults from Québec, raising doubts on the relevance of promoting local food procurement as an effective public health measure for improving diet quality in Québec. The identification and evaluation of barriers to artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in food supply chain finance (FSCF) can be addressed as a multiattribute decision-making problem. However, only a few studies have reported the application of decision models for evaluating barriers to the implementation of AI in FSCF, especially within an uncertain context. Hence, this work explores the evaluation issue of implementation barriers via an integrated decision model. In this model, the conventional additive ratio assessment (ARAS) model integrated with the Choquet integral and criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) is extended into the interval-valued Fermatean fuzzy (IVFF) setting for ranking the barriers. The IVFF weighted average operator based on the Choquet integral is introduced to form a group decision matrix. Then, the developed ARAS model with the IVFF-CRITIC method is proposed to evaluate the implementation barriers for AI in FSCF, which can depict the interactions between the barriers. Finally, a case of an FSCF, including four participants, is presented to illustrate the application of the reported model and demonstrate its reliability. The result shows that "Data privacy" () is the main barrier impeding AI adoption in FSCF, and the participant "small and medium-sized processing enterprises" () has the highest barrier level to AI adoption. Background: Placement interventions, characterised by greater availability and more prominent positioning of healthy food products in supermarkets and other food stores, are associated with healthier patterns of purchasing and diet. The WRAPPED intervention study is a natural experiment that aims to evaluate a supermarket placement intervention to improve fruit and vegetable sales, household purchasing and the dietary quality of women and their children. Process evaluation, alongside the evaluation of outcomes, is essential to understand how interventions are implemented, under what circumstances they are effective, and their mechanisms of impact. This study aimed to assess the implementation of the WRAPPED placement intervention. Methods: The study adopted a convergent mixed-methods design. Quantitative data extracted from study store planograms (visual representation of stores and product placement) before and after intervention implementation were used to assess the positioning of fresh fruit and vegetables in the first aisle from the front entrance (intervention dose). The availability of fresh fruit and vegetables in each study store was examined from stock-keeping unit (SKU) figures before and after intervention implementation. An intervention implementation survey (IIS) completed with store managers and senior supervisors before and 1- and 6-months post-intervention implementation enabled examination of the context across study stores. Semi-structured interviews with store managers and senior supervisors provided qualitative data about store staff experiences and perceptions of the intervention between 6-months post-intervention implementation. Results: The placement intervention was implemented with close adherence to the study protocol. There were marked differences, post-intervention implementation, in the positioning of fresh fruit and vegetables in intervention stores compared with control stores: median distance in intervention stores was 8.0 m (IQR 5.0 to 10.0) compared with 23.8 m (IQR 21.0 to 30.0) in control stores (P < 0.0001). The availability of varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables increased in intervention stores post-intervention compared with control stores: median (IQR) among intervention stores was 72 (51, 84) compared with 56.5 (50, 62) in control stores (P = 0.03). The mean change from baseline to post-implementation in number of different fruit and vegetables available in intervention stores was 15.3 (SD 16.7) (P = 0.01). IIS and interview data demonstrated little difference between intervention and store contexts over time. Reinforcing factors for intervention implementation included: head-office leadership, store staff views and attitudes and increased awareness of the importance of offering healthy food in prominent locations within stores. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that placement interventions which promote fresh fruit and vegetables to customers in discount supermarkets can be implemented effectively. These findings are encouraging for the implementation of national food policies which modify retail environments to improve population purchasing and dietary patterns. The valorisation of co-products from food supply chains is consistent with the objectives of the national recovery and resilience plan (NRRP), which favours issues relating to the "green revolution and ecological transition". The nutraceutical characteristics (antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-cancer, etc.) of grape pomace extracts are due to the presence of polyphenols. The objective of the following research was to develop an innovative extraction process in order to produce a special powder with high technological and nutraceutical value (polyphenols). For the experimentation, red grape pomace from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes was used. The first phase of the experimentation allowed the development of the extraction methods; the second involved the use of a pilot system for the extraction, filtration, and distillation phases. The result obtained is a powder with compositional characteristics suitable for the fortification of alcoholic and non-alcoholic food matrices, due to its colouring and antioxidant and nutraceutical properties. In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and integrated resource use, the revalorisation of horticultural by-products is emerging as a key strategy to minimise food loss and waste while maximising value within the food supply chain. Fermentation, one of the earliest and most versatile food processing techniques, utilises microorganisms or enzymes to induce desirable biochemical transformations that enhance the nutritional value, digestibility, safety, and sensory properties of food products. This process has been identified as a promising method for producing novel, high-value food products from discarded or non-aesthetic fruits and vegetables that fail to meet commercial standards due to aesthetic factors such as size or appearance. Besides waste reduction, fermentation enables the production of functional beverages and foods enriched with probiotics, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds, depending on the specific horticultural matrix and the types of microorganisms employed. This review explores the current bioprocesses used or under investigation, such as alcoholic, lactic, and acetic acid fermentation, for the revalorisation of fruit and vegetable by-products, with particular emphasis on how fermentation can transform these by-products into valuable foods and ingredients for human consumption, contributing to a more sustainable and circular food system. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) faces obstacles in guaranteeing food security because of its desert climate, restricted arable land, and significant reliance on food imports. Establishing a robust and transparent food supply chain is crucial. This study investigates the crucial functions of blockchain technology in protecting and improving food security in the UAE. Using bibliographic and co-citation network analyses, this study examines 143 research articles that provide a thorough review of the current status of blockchain technology in relation to food security. We examine the interrelationships among studies, highlighting significant themes and identifying three emerging food security patterns in the incorporation of blockchain into the food security domain. This study enhances the understanding of how blockchain technology can transform the food security dimensions of availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability in the UAE and worldwide. This study examines the shift in China's seafood production, revealing that mariculture has surpassed marine capture as the primary source of marine food. The research aims to assess the roles of marine capture and mariculture in meeting rising food demand and ensuring nutrition security, given the limitations of land-based food production. Using data from 2003 to 2021, the study highlights several key trends: mariculture, focused on shellfish and algae, now outpaces marine capture, which remains centered on fish and crustaceans. Significant regional disparities are observed, with mariculture expanding rapidly in several coastal provinces as marine capture declines. Nutrient supply from marine capture has followed a three-phase pattern of growth, stagnation, and decline, while mariculture's nutrient output has steadily increased, particularly in protein. By 2019-2020, mariculture surpassed marine capture in energy and protein supply, though fat supply remains lower. Regional differences in nutrient supply show mariculture leading in multiple provinces. Cool season legumes (Faba bean, chickpea, lentil, pea, and grass pea) are important protein harvests for food and nutrition security in many countries. They play key roles in sustainable cereal production through their ecological benefits. However, diseases and pests attack continue to have a substantial impact on crop yield and quality. Although growers used different control options to manage these biotic stresses such as pesticide application, cultural practices, and resistant varieties, there is a pressing need for the development of new, more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to help farmers in facing the existing environmental issues. Recently, there is a growing interest among researchers in exploiting Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for the elaboration of disease and pest control strategies in food legumes and other crops. These compounds have important functions in ecological relationships occurring between plants and their surrounding environment, as well as plants and others species, such as pests and pathogens. Due to their unique properties, VOCs can be employed in improving management alternatives for food legume diseases and pests. In this assessment, we investigated the role of VOCs in plant-pest and plant-pathogen interactions and their present applications in pest and diseases control strategies. We emphasized the ecological importance of employing plant VOCs in legume farming and crop breeding. Additionally, we highlighted the potential of microbial VOCs in facilitating microbe-microbe, microbe-plant and microbe-plant-pest interactions, along with their role in food legume protection. As the current agricultural industry is facing several challenges such as climate changes and lack of qualified farmers, it is extremely necessary to ensure sustainable agriculture and food supply by smart farming (SF). The SF can assist farmers and the associated stakeholders in making correct decisions on improving the yield and quality of agricultural products. In this study, an SF system based on low‐cost Raspberry Pi and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has been successfully implemented. Through the data items detected by sensors to deeply manage the planting process, the IoT‐enabled communication protocol under ISO standards of Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) was used. The bar charts of real‐time environmental parameters are presented on ThingsBoard to achieve the goal of data visualization. Meanwhile, a web server is built for the customized requirements, and the historical datasets are stored in the SQLite database system. Furthermore, a Petri net (PN) model was employed to detect all possible abnormal processes and to verify the feasibility and soundness of an IoT‐enabled system by using a software tool, WoPeD. Finally, the experimental results show that the plants cultivated by the proposed IoT‐enabled system are superior to those cultivated by the existing systems in many perspectives, including the monitoring distance, power consumption, precision, deadlock detection, and running time. Alternative meat (AltMeat), which includes plant-based and cultured meats, has the potential to improve the global food supply chain on numerous environmental and societal dimensions. Some of these gains, derived from lower animal meat consumption, could disrupt the supply chain of crops that are used as animal feed. This study evaluates the potential impact of animal meat displacement on major corn and soybean-producing regions, globally or in developed regions. We combine trading patterns and regional cost structures with potential crop demand reductions caused by animal meat displacement, to occur by 2032 on top of an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (OECD-FAO) baseline projection without AltMeat. We find that potential animal meat displacement in the US and the European Union (EU) would have a minor effect on crop markets. Worldwide displacement, however, would lead to significantly lower corn and soybean prices relative to the baseline OECD-FAO projection without AltMeat. We explore quantitatively the heterogeneous impact of such developments in crop-producing regions. Background: Developing anti-obesity interventions targeting appetite or food intake, the primary driver of obesity, remains challenging. Here, we demonstrated that dietary γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) with GABA-degradation inhibitory drugs could be an anti-obesity intervention possessing strong food intake-suppressive and weight-loss effects. Methods: High-fat (HF)-diet-induced obese mice were divided into six groups receiving either the HF diet or the 2% GABA-HF diet with daily administration of PBS or the GABA-degradation inhibitory drugs, vigabatrin and ethanolamine-O-sulfate (EOS). In 24-h fast-induced refeeding, lean mice with a basal diet were used, and food intake was measured from 0.5 to 24 h after refeeding. Results: Coadministration of the 2% GABA-HF diet with vigabatrin or EOS significantly decreased food intake (−53%, −35%) and body weight (−22%, −16%) within 11 days in obese mice, along with a marked increase in plasma GABA levels. Mice receiving dietary GABA alone or the drugs alone exhibited no such effects. Hypothalamic GABA levels increased in drug-treated mice, regardless of diet. At 0.5 h after refeeding, food intake was similar in all groups. However, at 0.5 h, plasma GABA levels were markedly increased only in mice receiving coadministration of dietary GABA and the drugs, and their food intake was completely inhibited for over 6 h, while mice in other groups gradually increased their food intake. Conclusion: Combining dietary GABA with GABA-degradation inhibitory drugs effectively suppresses food intake and promotes weight loss in obese mice, primarily through increased plasma GABA availability. Pesticide residues in food are a global concern due to their potential impacts on human health and the environment. This study investigates pesticide residues in vegetables commonly consumed in Egypt, utilizing advanced analytical techniques such as Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and Gas Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). A total of 4200 vegetable samples, including cucumber, squash, eggplant, okra, peas, onion, green onion, parsley, lettuce, and cantaloupe, were collected from 20 markets across different Egyptian governorates between 2018 and 2021. The analysis revealed that 42% of the samples contained pesticide residues, with only 13% of the analyzed samples exceeding the maximum residue limits (MRLs) established by Codex/EU-MRL standards. Despite this, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of the detected pesticides did not surpass acceptable daily intake (ADI) limits, suggesting no immediate chronic health risks to consumers. These findings highlight Egypt's ongoing commitment to food safety, while also underscoring the importance of continuous monitoring and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices to ensure the long-term safety and quality of the food supply. Avian brood reduction was initially thought to be driven by insufficient food supply. Now it is more commonly considered a consequence of asynchronous hatching and resulting siblicide, direct filial infanticide (where parents kill specific chicks) or indirect filial infanticide (where parents starve specific chicks). In psittacines, brood reduction has been reported, but the mechanisms and causes remain unexplored. In this paper, we test the hypotheses that Scarlet Macaw chick starvation is driven by (1) sibling aggression, (2) food scarcity, and (3) parental food allocation based on (a) chick hatch weight and (b) chick age differences. We documented wild Scarlet Macaw behavior in lowland Peru in 37 nests over 19 seasons using morphological measurements and nest videos. Chick starvation was the leading cause of chick mortality (27% of all second-hatched chicks starve, and nearly all third- and fourth-hatched chicks starve). We found no evidence that starvation was caused by (1) sibling conflicts or (2) food availability. We did find parental food distribution favors first-hatched chicks, with larger age differences increasing the chances of second chick starvation. This study offers insights into brood reduction among Neotropical cavity-nesting birds and enhances our capacity to develop scientifically informed management strategies to support endangered psittacines. One of the consequences of the globalisation of food markets is the effort enabling the control of food security and its origin. This might be traced by using different chemical composition analyses. However, for Central Europe, there is a lack of knowledge about the original reference values as well as their heterogeneity among the lands and countries. This study focused on characterizing the mineral profiles of apple tree fruits and comparing these profiles among different districts in Central Europe. The fruits of the apple cultivars 'Gala' and 'Golden Delicious' originated in the Czech Republic and Poland. The mineral and isotopic content of the apple fruit flesh was analysed using ICP-MS. The data were processed using the ANOVA test and compositely analysed using the PCA and LDA models. The results show relatively high variation in element distribution, particularly 87Sr/86Sr, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ca, P, and B, ranging between 20.6 and67.9% for both cultivars on average. However, their high variability within particular districts complicates the resolution of the LDA model. The reasons are linked to the geomorphological and pedological heterogeneity of the analysed districts as well as the particular sensitivity of the set of chosen primers to agronomic practices and tree performance. For this region, only partial separation among districts could be obtained by P, Ca, and Cu content, as well as the isotopic ratio of 10B/11B. However, the resolution of the geographical discrimination needs to be improved by an enhanced set of primers, the use of more precise analytical techniques for the Sr isotopic ratio, or by multiple chemical analyses. Food insecurity and malnutrition are rising worldwide due to disruptions in food systems related to interconnected health-, climate- and conflict-related crises. Although governments globally are committed to addressing nutritional challenges, policy responses have increasingly focused on food security and, particularly, on food affordability. However, these short-term measures often overlook the necessity of integrating nutritious foods into the food system to ensure improved long-term nutrition. By drawing on the United Nations Committee on World Food Security's Voluntary guidelines on food systems and nutrition, this article outlines opportunities for policy-makers to integrate nutrition into key elements of the crisis response. Key policy areas where nutrition could be further integrated include social protection, agricultural investment, trade policy and urban planning. Strengthening the focus of nutrition in these measures will be essential to establish long-term incentives that support food systems transformation for improved nutrition. Drawing on theories of the policy process, I propose that stronger governance and cross-sectoral dialogue will be critical to achieve sustained nutritional outcomes. Health policy-makers can play a leadership role in supporting cross-sectoral policy change by carefully framing the policy issues, advocating for institutional structures that promote collaboration across sectors to prioritize nutrition, and strengthening the management of conflicts of interest in food system policy-making. A new nanocomposite based on alginate microbeads impregnated with novel strontium–aluminum layered double hydroxide (Sr‐Al LDH) incorporated with choline chloride‐urea deep eutectic solvent (ChCl‐U DES) was introduced. The microbeads and LDH were characterized by adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, SEM, and x‐ray diffraction. The adsorbent was employed for determining penicillin G (PENG) using dispersive solid‐phase extraction prior to HPLC analysis. The extraction efficiency of the adsorbent, compared with that of unmodified alginate, showed a 2.5‐fold increase. Significant parameters, including elution conditions, sorbent composition and mass, adsorption time, and sample pH, were optimized. The LOD was 0.4 µg kg−1, and the linear range was 1.4–500 µg kg−1. The LOQ (1.4 µg kg−1) was lower than the established maximum level for PENG by the European Union (4 µg kg−1). Enrichment factor and synthesis reproducibility were also investigated. The method's accuracy was evaluated through PENG analysis in dairy products and water, with recoveries of 81%–107% (RSDs < 7.6%). The procedure's greenness was assessed using the Analytical Eco‐scale and achieved excellent green credentials. Effective drying methods are a highly suitable solution for ensuring stable food supply chains, reducing postharvest agricultural losses, and preventing the spoilage of perishable fruits and vegetables. Moreover, machine learning techniques are innovative and dependable, especially in addressing food spoilage and optimizing drying processes. This study utilized a continuous infrared (IR) hot air dryer to dry garlic (Allium sativum L.) slices. The experiments were conducted at different levels of IR power, air velocities (V), and temperature (T). The relationships between the input process parameters (IR, T, and V) and response parameters, including effective moisture diffusivity (Deff), drying time, and physicochemical properties of the dried slices (rehydration ratio [RR], total color change, flavor strength, and allicin content in the garlic), were modeled using an artificial neural network (ANN). Our findings showed that the maximum Deff of 6.8 × 10−10 m2/s and minimum drying time of 225 min were achieved with an IR of 3000 W/m2, an air velocity of 0.7 m/s, and a temperature of 60°C. The total color change and RR values increased with IR and higher air temperature but declined with higher air velocity. Furthermore, the garlic's flavor strength and allicin content levels decreased as the IR and air temperature increased. The results demonstrated a significant influence of the independent parameters on the response parameters (p < 0.01). Interestingly, the ANN predictions closely matched the test data sets, providing valuable insights for understanding and controlling the factors affecting drying behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the change in the Dietary Diversity (DD) Index of Maya women of reproductive age living in rural areas of the Western Highlands of Guatemala after nutrition, health, and agroecology interventions. Methods: This is a secondary analysis study on DD from two matched groups from three villages in the Lake Atitlan area in the department of Sololá. The first cohort was recruited in 2017 (sample of n = 77). The second cohort was recruited in 2020 (sample of n = 61). Both were followed until 2021. The program provided various resources for assistance for food production and home improvements (sessions from 2018 to 2022). Agroecology sessions were conducted in the test farm. Due to the COVID-19, adjustments were made to continue the education and training sessions. Results: Both cohort samples had a statistically significant increase in participants who consumed at least 15 g from five groups of foods (2017: p =.00002; 2020: p =.045). There was a statistically significant increase in mean food groups consumed daily (2017: p <.00001; 2020: p =.005). Conclusions for Practice: Implementing interventions that include nutrition, health, and agroecology practices in the long term has demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the Dietary Diversity Index of Maya women in their reproductive years living in rural villages in the Western Highlands. Significance: Indigenous Maya women face numerous health challenges, including stunting, poor nutrition, and maternal mortality. Low dietary diversity and limited food access in rural areas of Guatemala exacerbate these issues. The intervention in this study statistically increased the Dietary Diversity Index of Maya women, notably raising the consumption of Vitamin B and Vitamin A-rich foods, which are essential for maternal and fetal health. Carbon leakage can undermine the effectiveness of domestic climate policies and, if perceived as a significant risk, could even prevent their implementation. This concern also extends to the agricultural sector, where existing studies indicate a high potential carbon leakage risk. Like in other sectors, governments could use a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) to reduce this risk. In theory, a CBAM could offer an efficient solution to avoid competitiveness losses by domestic producers and thus reduce carbon leakage. However, the feasibility of implementing such a mechanism remains an open question. Although the literature suggests many CBAM design options, we are unaware of CBAM design proposals for agriculture. To fill this literature gap, this article uses a mixed methods approach to outline the characteristics of an agricultural CBAM (Ag-CBAM) and develop a design that could enhance its administrative, technical, and legal feasibility. We recommend that an Ag-CBAM should only cover carbon pricing policies, acknowledge foreign mitigation efforts, and use carbon price and emission intensity benchmarks. Additionally, we propose that it should cover only imports of products causing the majority of carbon leakage and be limited to emissions along certain life-cycle stages where emissions originate along the food supply chain, and specific greenhouse gases. Finally, our article discusses the potential performance of this CBAM under further criteria, including its effectiveness in reducing carbon leakage, equity, and consistency with the Paris Agreement. Key policy insights: The characteristics of the agricultural sector make the design of an Ag-CBAM far from trivial. Designing an Ag-CBAM requires extensive country-specific information to choose among many possible regulatory options. Although countries can improve the feasibility of implementing an Ag-CBAM through finding an suitable design, such an Ag-CBAM could lose its effectiveness in reducing carbon leakage and have further unexpected effects. An Ag-CBAM seems an attractive policy in countries where: carbon pricing policies in agriculture lead to a significant substitution of domestic by foreign products; few imports cause most carbon leakage; most emissions embodied in these imports do not originate in less-developed countries; and uncovered GHG emissions and benchmarks do not substantially reduce its effectiveness in reducing carbon leakage. This study presents a large-scale interlaboratory comparison (ILC) aimed at detecting and quantifying DNA from two European anglerfish (Lophius budegassa, Lophius piscatorius), pike (Esox lucius) and sea bream (Spondyliosoma cantharus) using real-time qPCR. To detect amplification of the parvalbumin genetic marker, single and multiplex qPCR assays using EvaGreen® dye or TaqMan™ probes were used. Genomic DNA isolated from target fish species and an advanced DNA calibrator, gBlocks® gene fragments, were used as standards. The DNA of anglerfish, pike and sea bream as well as their mixtures were analysed together with 14 other non-target fish species. All target fish samples were correctly identified by the participating laboratories. Qualitative assessment of anglerfish and seabream DNA showed an accuracy rate of 100%, while pike DNA achieved a match rate of 99%. Validation of quantitative protocols in four different laboratories consistently achieved z-scores below 2, indicating satisfactory performance and confirming the high degree of similarity of laboratory results. Furthermore, high accuracy and efficiency were demonstrated for the quantification of anglerfish and seabream DNA by triplex qPCR using TaqMan™ probes. Regarding the selected gene marker, the major fish allergenic protein parvalbumin enables indirect detection and quantification of the allergen in the sample. According to the monthly counts of the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS), the numbers of Eurasian Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus wintering in Great Britain has gradually decreased since the late 1980s/early 1990s. Although numbers also decreased in the South West region of England, the decline was much steeper in the Exe estuary population, suggesting that site-specific pressures may have affected this species in this regionally-important Special Protection Area. By combining data from the WeBS with those from 45 years of research on Oystercatchers by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, we tested five hypotheses that could explain the relative decline on the Exe estuary: (1) a gradual improvement in estimating Oystercatcher numbers as counting methods were refined, (2) a deterioration in the main food supply, the Blue Mussel Mytilus edulis, (3) disturbance from people on and alongside the estuary, (4) disturbance from Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus and (5) an as yet unexplained increase in the frequency of stealing of mussels from Oystercatchers (kleptoparasitism) by Carrion Crows Corvus corone and European Herring Gulls Larus argentatus. The data are consistent only with the fifth hypothesis. Individual-based modelling suggested that kleptoparasitism at the increased frequency that occurred on the Exe estuary could have reduced the foraging success of Oystercatchers sufficiently to have (1) reduced the overwinter survival of the numerically dominant mussel-eating adults and (2) deterred prospecting immatures from choosing the estuary as their future wintering site.
