We investigate the formation and transport of gas bubbles across a model porous electrode/catalyst using lattice Boltzmann simulations. This approach enables us to systematically examine the influence of a wide range of morphologies, flow velocities, and reaction rates on the efficiency of gas production. By exploring these parameters, we identify critical parameter combinations that significantly contribute to an enhanced yield of gas output. Our simulations reveal the existence of an optimal pore geometry for which the product output is maximized. Intriguingly, we also observe that lower flow velocities improve gas production by leveraging coalescence-induced bubble detachment from the electrode/catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluid-based methods for particle sorting demonstrate increasing appeal in many areas of biosciences due to their biocompatibility and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we construct a microfluidic sorting system based on a swirl microchip. The impact of microchannel velocity on the swirl stagnation point as well as particle movement is analyzed through simulation and experiment. Moreover, the quantitative mapping relationship between flow velocity and particle position distribution is established. With this foundation established, a particle sorting method based on swirl induction is proposed. Initially, the particle is captured by a swirl. Then, the Sorting Region into which the particle aims to enter is determined according to the sorting condition and particle characteristic. Subsequently, the velocities of the microchannels are adjusted to control the swirl, which will induce the particle to enter its corresponding Induction Region. Thereafter, the velocities are adjusted again to change the fluid field and drive the particle into a predetermined Sorting Region, hence the sorting is accomplished. We have extensively conducted experiments taking particle size or color as a sorting condition. An outstanding sorting success rate of 98.75% is achieved when dealing with particles within the size range of tens to hundreds of micrometers in radius, which certifies the effectiveness of the proposed sorting method. Compared to the existing sorting techniques, the proposed method offers greater flexibility. The adjustment of sorting conditions or particle parameters no longer requires complex chip redesign, because such sorting tasks can be successfully realized through simple microchannel velocities control. Directional fluid flow in perivascular spaces surrounding cerebral arteries is hypothesized to play a key role in brain solute transport and clearance. While various drivers for a pulsatile flow, such as cardiac or respiratory pulsations, are well quantified, the question remains as to which mechanisms could induce a directional flow within physiological regimes. To address this question, we develop theoretical and numerical reduced-order models to quantify the directional (net) flow induceable by peristaltic pumping in periarterial networks. Each periarterial element is modeled as a slender annular space bounded internally by a circular tube supporting a periodic traveling (peristaltic) wave. Under reasonable assumptions of a small Reynolds number flow, small radii, and small-amplitude peristaltic waves, we use lubrication theory and regular perturbation methods to derive theoretical expressions for the directional net flow and pressure distribution in the perivascular network. The reduced model is used to derive closed-form analytical expressions for the net flow for simple network configurations of interest, including single elements, two elements in tandem, and a three element bifurcation, with results compared with numerical predictions. In particular, we provide a computable theoretical estimate of the net flow induced by peristaltic motion in perivascular networks as a function of physiological parameters, notably, wave length, frequency, amplitude, and perivascular dimensions. Quantifying the maximal net flow for specific physiological regimes, we find that vasomotion may induce net pial periarterial flow velocities on the order of a few to tens of μ m/s and that sleep-related changes in vasomotion pulsatility may drive a threefold flow increase. The investigation of blood flow into curved arteries is fascinating and essential to prevent the advancement of vascular disease. Motivated by electro-kinetic manipulation, gold nanoparticles, and their size applications, a mathematical model is developed to explain blood flow, entropy generation, and electro-kinetic energy conversion (EKEC) efficiency in curved arterial flow. To make this study more realistic, a patient-specific overlapped stenosis condition and non-Newtonian (power-law fluid) blood flow model have been considered. The effects of a magnetic field, external heating, and chemical reactions are also included. The Stone's strongly implicit scheme has been considered to solve the system of non-linear partial differential equations (PDE's) in the" MATLAB" software. In this numerical investigation, an error tolerance of 10 − 6 has been considered for every iteration step under Stone's scheme. The significance of various physical parameters, such as nanoparticle volume fraction (m), their size (dp), magnetic field intensity (M), inverse Debye length ( κ ¯ ), flow behavior index (Sc), heat source (H), and chemical reaction parameter (ξ) on the blood flow velocity, temperature, concentration, EKEC efficiency, and entropy generation have been explained graphically. This study also developed stream function contours to describe flow trapping patterns. The findings of this study conclude that the blood flow EKEC efficiency reduces with the presence of nanoparticles and stenosis in the artery. In addition, both flow velocity and entropy enhance by adopting large-size nanoparticles instead of small diametric nanoparticles. Clinical researchers and biologists may use the results of this computational study to forecast endothelial cell damage and plaque deposition in curved arteries with WSS profiles, by which the severity of these conditions can be reduced. Solute transport in unsaturated conditions is important in various applications and natural environments, such as groundwater flow in the vadose zone. Studies of unsaturated solute transport show complex characteristics (e.g. non-Fickian transport) due to larger variations in the pore-scale velocities compared to transport in saturated conditions. However, the physical processes at the pore scale are still not completely understood because direct three-dimensional observations at the pore scale are very limited. In this study, single-phase and two-phase solute transport was directly characterized by performing tracer injection experiments in a sintered glass and Bentheimer sandstone sample. These experiments were imaged by continuous scanning with fast laboratory-based micro-computed tomography. The network-scale flow velocities and transport properties were characterized by using the pore-based transient concentration fields to determine the tracer's arrival time and filling duration in every pore. Important measures for dispersion (the scalar dissipation rate and filling duration) were determined and indicated a wide range in pore-scale velocities and the existence of stagnant and flowing pores for the unsaturated experiments. Furthermore, we performed the first quantification of the mass transfer coefficient between stagnant and flowing pores on three-dimensional experimental data. We also calculated the tortuosity directly from the interstitial velocity and the pore-based velocity. This was found to be 13% higher in unsaturated conditions compared to saturated conditions. Our results indicate that pore-scale structural heterogeneity increases the differences between saturated and unsaturated solute transport. In the present research, an attempt is made to use four machine learning technique techniques such as artificial neural network combined with particle swarm optimization (ANN-PSO), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and M5Tree machine learning (ML) approaches to model the scour depth. A total of 534 live bed scouring (LBS) experimental and field datasets are collected for bridge pier scouring from the previously published literature, and a gamma test has been performed to identify the best input parameter combination. A total of 36 combinations were tested in the gamma test, five distinct input combinations such as pier width to flow depth (b/y), approach flow velocity to sediment incipient velocity (V/Vc), critical Froude number (Frc), pier width to median sediment size (b/d50), geometric standard deviation of bed material (σg) were selected based on the lowest gamma value and Vratio. The developed models have been validated using field datasets of Pearl River, Mississippi, USA, by Mueller and Wagner (2005) and Ganga River, Patna, India, by Kumar and Singh (2022) and compared with six other existing scour depth predictive models. Results indicate that the proposed M5Tree scour depth prediction model (R2 = 0.9196, RMSE = 0.0837) provided better accuracy for all combinations of input variables (b/y, V/Vc, Frc, b/ d50, σg) compared to other ML models. The developed M5Tree model was successfully applied to the field condition for Ganga River, Patna, India and Pearl River, Mississippi, USA, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value is found to be less than 12% and the coefficient of determination (R2) more than 0.98. The study of hydrogen concentration distribution law of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline is directly related to the safety and stability of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline network. Based on the theory of fluid dynamics, this paper established a model of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline and simulated the operation and shutdown status of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline by adopting the computational fluid dynamics method and selecting the mixture multiphase model and standard k - ε turbulence model. This paper investigates the hydrogen concentration distribution law in hydrogen-doped methane pipelines as well as the influence law of different hydrogen-doping ratios, operating flow velocities, operating pressures, shutdown time and gas usage on the hydrogen concentration distribution in gas pipeline. The results show that: under the operation condition, there is a weak uneven distribution of hydrogen in the pipeline, the hydrogen-doping ratio, flow velocity, pressure on the hydrogen volume fraction of the change in the 0.9% or less, the effect can be ignored; in the shutdown status, there is a clear stratification phenomenon, the hydrogen-doping ratio increased from 10 to 25%, the change in the volume fraction of hydrogen in the 11.2% or less, a positive correlation; with the extension of the shutdown time to 900s, the pipeline firstly appeared obvious stratification phenomenon in the branch pipe, the thickness of the gas with hydrogen volume fraction above 40% on the upper wall surface of the branch pipe increased to 0.7 mm, and after the shutdown time was extended to 10 h, obvious stratification phenomenon appeared in the main pipeline, and the volume fraction of hydrogen near the top of the main pipe of about 16.5 mm was above 30%, which was positively correlated; In the shutdown status, the shutdown time has the greatest effect on the stratification phenomenon in the pipe, followed by the hydrogen-doping ratio, and the gas usage has the least effect. The objective of this pilot study was to assess the reliability of superb microvascular ultrasound (SMI) for the measurement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow within VPS systems as an indirect sign for shunt dysfunction. Asymptomatic hydrocephalus patients, with a VPS system implanted between 2017 and 2021, were prospectively enrolled in the study. Using SMI, the CSF flow within the proximal and distal catheters were analysed. Before and after pumping the shunt reservoir, intraabdominal free fluid, optical nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), and papilla diameter (PD) were evaluated and correlated with the amount of valve activation. Nineteen patients were included. A flow was detectable in 100% (N = 19) patients in the proximal and in 89.5% (N = 17) in the distal catheter. The distal catheter tip was detectable in 27.7% (N = 5) patients. Free intraabdominal fluid was initially detected in 21.4% (N = 4) patients and in 57.9% (N = 11) at the end of the examination (P = 0.049). ONSD was significantly lower after pump activation (4.4 ± 0.9 mm versus 4.1 ± 0.8 mm, P = 0.049). Both peak velocity and flow volume per second were higher in proximal compared to distal catheters (32.2 ± 45.2 versus 5.6 ± 3.7 cm/sec, P = 0.015; 16.6 ± 9.5 ml/sec versus 5.1 ± 4.0 ml/sec, P = 0.001, respectively). No correlation was found between the number of pump activations and the changes in ONSD (P = 0.975) or PD (P = 0.820). SMI appears to be a very promising non-invasive diagnostic tool to assess CSF flow within the VPS systems and therefore affirm their function. Most major rivers in Europe have been dammed for hydropower or other purposes. Such river alterations have decimated natural reproduction of many migratory fish species, including that of the anadromous European whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, which is now maintained by extensive stocking programmes. In addition to stocking, limited natural reproduction may occur downstream of dams, where peak flow bouts from the dams threaten to flush the eggs into unsuitable habitats. Here, we assessed the effects of water flow velocity and substrate coarseness on downstream drift of whitefish eggs under laboratory conditions. The experiment's two different gravel substrates retained eggs better than cobble or sand substrates; the water velocity needed for notable egg drift was higher for the gravel substrates. The results indicate that egg drift is one of the factors that should be considered when evaluating the effects of hydropower plant operations. Moreover, measures mitigating the effects of the artificial flow regimes should incorporate the type and coarseness of the riverbed's substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To analyze the influence of different ignition positions on the propagation of deflagration characteristics and the disaster mechanism in the hydrogen deflagration process in the tunnel, this study compares and verifies the experimental data of tunnel model deflagration based on the CFD code GASFLOW-MPI. A combustion velocity model based on the accelerated separation effect is used, and the effect of heat transfer on the consequences of deflagration is considered. The propagation laws of pressure waves, fluid velocity and temperature in the tunnel are analyzed, and it is found that the changing trends of shock waves and fluid velocity in the tunnel are consistent, but completely opposite in the tunnel outside. The effects of different ignition positions on the hydrogen deflagration characteristics are compared and analyzed. The results show that when ignition occurs at different heights of the center of the premixed region, the impact on the deflagration characteristics is relatively small, while when ignition occurs at different horizontal distances in the premixed region, the impact on the deflagration characteristics is relatively large; the peak overpressure of side ignition is far lower than the case where ignition occurs in the center of the premixed region, but the maximum flow velocity is much higher than the center ignition. The impact on temperature is the smallest. In general, in areas close to the hydrogen/air premixed zone, side ignition results in more severe consequences, whereas in areas far from the premixed zone and outside the tunnel, central ignition leads to more severe consequences. The study investigates the effect of tube shrinkage rate on the explosion characteristics of premixed hydrogen-air in a confined space using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The wrinkle factor of the flame surface density model is dynamically modeled based on the Fureby and Muppala (FurebyM) model. The numerical results from this model can be better verified with previous experimental results. The results indicate that a lower shrinkage rate results in longer flame propagation time from the reducer region. The peak flame front velocities were 68.6 m/s, 83.6 m/s, 96.4 m/s, and 103.6 m/s for tube shrinkage rates of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, respectively. There is also a negative correlation between explosion overpressure and varying shrinking rates. The split tulip flame forms at a shrinkage rate of 0.25. Analysis of the flame structure and velocity flow field suggests that this phenomenon may be related to the formation of multiple fish-tail vortex structures on the left side of the flame front. Moreover, the effect of different shrinkage rates on the flame structure and the velocity flow field before the propagation of the premixed flame to the reducer region is relatively insignificant for tube structures with different shrinkage rates. The work focuses on developing a detailed understanding of the effects of initial composition (Cin) and bottom cooling temperatures (TB) on different characteristics of double-diffusive convection during unidirectional solidification of water-NH4Cl solution in a complete non-intrusive manner. The qualitative investigation, simultaneous quantification of transported parameters (composition and temperature) and fluid velocities associated with flow patterns are carried out using rainbow schlieren deflectometry, dual-wavelength interferometry and PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique respectively. The dependence of the characteristics of double-diffusive convection for different Cin and TB is explained on the basis of real-time whole-field investigation using a combination of aforementioned imaging techniques. Purpose: To investigate the association between pretreatment blood flow velocity in the choroid and optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal oxygen metabolism in the acute uveitic phase and the development of 'sunset glow fundus' in Vogt‐Koyanagi‐Harada (VKH) disease. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 41 patients (82 eyes). Laser speckle flowgraphy and retinal oximetry measurements were performed at the presentation. The main outcome measure was the development of 'sunset glow fundus'. Results: Twenty patients (40 eyes) presented in the phase preceding anterior segment inflammation (early presentation), and 21 patients (42 eyes) presented with anterior segment inflammation (late presentation). In ONH, mean blur rate (MBR)‐vessel, representing blood flow velocity in retinal vessels, was significantly lower in the late presentation group, while choroidal MBR was not significantly different. The late presentation group had significantly lower oxygen saturation in retinal venules, a higher arteriovenous oxygen saturation difference and a smaller calibre of retinal arterioles compared with the early presentation group. Eyes that subsequently developed 'sunset glow fundus' had significantly lower ONH MBR‐vessels, lower oxygen saturation in retinal venules, a higher arteriovenous oxygen saturation difference and a smaller calibre of retinal arterioles compared with eyes without 'sunset glow fundus'. ONH MBR‐vessel had a significant negative correlation with arteriovenous oxygen saturation difference and a significant positive correlation with calibre of retinal arterioles. Conclusions: In the acute uveitic phase of VKH disease, the development of 'sunset glow fundus' is associated with pretreatment reduced retinal blood flow velocity, calibre of retinal arterioles and oxygen saturation in retinal venules, as well as an increased arteriovenous oxygen saturation difference. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a three-car grouped high-speed train (HST) with different bogie fairing configurations under the crosswind are studied using improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) at Re = 1.85 × 106. The numerical method results are validated against the previous wind tunnel experiments. There are three cases with original half-fairing configuration (HFC), non-fairing configuration (NFC) and full-fairing configuration (FFC), respectively. The numerical results show that the bogie fairing configuration has significant effects. Compared to the HFC case, the drag force coefficients of the head, middle and tail cars with NFC increase by 53.13%, 14.87% and 27.04%, and corresponding parts of the FFC case decrease by 49.98%, 24.40% and 12.41%, respectively. The FFC case can also optimize the pressure distribution on the windward and leeward sides of the HST, and the flow structure and vertex distribution around the car body are also optimized. In addition, the increasing encirclement of the fairing configurations reduces the maximum lateral flow velocity inside the bogie cavities by 70% for HFC and 50% for FFC compared to the NFC. Overall, the FFC presents better aerodynamic performance than the NFC and HFC cases under crosswind, which is recommended for the design of the HST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: Noradrenaline is a standard treatment for hypotension in acute care. The precise effects of noradrenaline on cerebral blood flow in health and disease remain unclear. Methods: We systematically reviewed and synthesised data from studies examining changes in cerebral blood flow in healthy participants and patients with traumatic brain injury and critical illness. Results: Twenty‐eight eligible studies were included. In healthy subjects and patients without critical illness or traumatic brain injury, noradrenaline did not significantly change cerebral blood flow velocity (‐1.7%, 95%CI ‐4.7–1.3%) despite a 24.1% (95%CI 19.4–28.7%) increase in mean arterial pressure. In patients with traumatic brain injury, noradrenaline significantly increased cerebral blood flow velocity (21.5%, 95%CI 11.0–32.0%), along with a 33.8% (95%CI 14.7–52.9%) increase in mean arterial pressure. In patients who were critically ill, noradrenaline significantly increased cerebral blood flow velocity (20.0%, 95%CI 9.7–30.3%), along with a 32.4% (95%CI 25.0–39.9%) increase in mean arterial pressure. Our analyses suggest intact cerebral autoregulation in healthy subjects and patients without critical illness or traumatic brain injury., and impaired cerebral autoregulation in patients with traumatic brain injury and who were critically ill. The extent of mean arterial pressure changes and the pre‐treatment blood pressure levels may affect the magnitude of cerebral blood flow changes. Studies assessing cerebral blood flow using non‐transcranial Doppler methods were inadequate and heterogeneous in enabling meaningful meta‐analysis. Conclusions: Noradrenaline significantly increases cerebral blood flow in humans with impaired, not intact, cerebral autoregulation, with the extent of changes related to the severity of functional impairment, the extent of mean arterial pressure changes and pre‐treatment blood pressure levels. This work examines tsunami run-up processes within a building array partially sheltered by a high-elevation, finite length, seawall. Work was performed using numerical modeling of 2D shallow water equations with varying seawall length, wave height, time scale, and structure size. Inundation depth and flow velocity were output at many locations of interest throughout the structural array. The most important influence on results when compared to the no-wall case was the sheltering or clearance angle as defined from the end of the wall. Behind the wall, inundation depth and cross-shore velocity declined significantly as sheltering angles increased (more sheltered). Alongshore inundation velocity (parallel to the seawall) increased strongly with increasing sheltering angle. A longer wave time scale resulted in significant increase in inundation depth and velocity especially at locations sheltered by the wall. Larger structure size or blockage ratio also led to increased inundation depth and flow velocity. However, varying wave height gave little change in inundation and velocity patterns. These results will serve to provide a better understanding of the wave inundation within a coastal urban region in a tsunami event when the seawall is breached, as well as the influence of coastal structure size and spacing on the tsunami inundation. The researchers explored the free convective flow of a hybrid nanofluid in a vertical microchannel with a rectangular cross‐section. Notably, both channel walls were heated alternately, and a transverse magnetic field was applied across the channel. The channel walls had unique properties, one of which was nonslip and the other was exceedingly hydrophobic. The major purpose was to investigate the effects of magnetism and superhydrophobicity on important flow parameters. The differential equations in the investigation were solved, producing accurate results. The study yielded some significant discoveries. First, when heated, the magnetic parameter reduced skin friction on both sides. Second, in both heating conditions, the magnetic field reduced flow rate and velocity. The flow rates in the two reported situations were similar at a crucial temperature jump coefficient. Furthermore, for low‐temperature jump coefficients, heating the superhydrophobic side reduced the Nusselt number whereas heating the nonslip side had no magnetic effect. The percentage change in the value of Nusselt number and velocity decreases continuously with increase in nonlinear density variation with temperature (NDT) parameter and magnetic parameter. The percentage increases in the value of skin friction with increase in temperature jump and slip length but decrease in the percentage of skin friction for the effect of magnetic term and NDT parameter. As the NDT parameter increases, the velocity percentage rises to 50.59% when the superhydrophobic surface is heated and to 84.30% when the nonslip surface is heated. The temperature jump is statistically significant for the value of the Nusselt number and skin friction for the no‐slip surface condition. These discoveries have practical consequences for the design and management of both tiny and large‐scale systems, with possible applications in microfluidics, microelectronics, nanoscience, and nanotechnology. Purpose: Transcranial doppler based diagnostic criteria for cerebral vasospasm are not well established in the pediatric population because there is no published normative data to support the diagnosis. Studies have relied on expert consensus, but the definitions have not been validated in children diagnosed with angiographic evidence of vasospasm. Obtaining normative data is a prerequisite to defining pediatric cerebral vasospasm and the Lindegaard Ratio (LR). In this study, we obtained normative data and calculation of the normal LR from healthy children aged 10–16 years. Methods: TCD and carotid ultrasonography was used to measure steady state velocities of both the middle cerebral artery (VMCA) and the extracranial internal cerebral artery (VEICA) in healthy children aged 10–16 years. Demographic information, hemodynamic characteristics and the calculated LR (VMCA/VEICA) was determined for each subject using descriptive statistics. Results: Of the 26 healthy children, 13 were male and 13 were female. VMCA ranged between 53 and 93 cm/sec. LR ranged between 1 and 2.2 for the cohort. VMCA for both males and females were within 2 standard deviations (SD) of the normal mean flow velocity. As the VMCA velocities approached 2 SD above the mean, LR did not exceed 2.2. Conclusion: Our results help define a threshold for LR which can be used to establish radiographic criteria for cerebral vasospasm in children. Our data suggests that using VMCA criteria alone would overestimate cerebral vasospasm and raises question of whether an LR threshold other than 3 is more appropriate for the cut off between hyperemia versus vasospasm in children. Hydraulic modelling of natural floodplain vegetation using leaf area index (LAI) has been applied successfully for non-submerged conditions whereas its suitability for submerged conditions requires further development. This study investigates the vegetative flow resistance at low relative submergences and extends existing LAI-based approaches building upon new flume data and prior experiences from field-scale applications. We provide advanced LAI-based formulas for modelling the flow resistance from emergent to submerged conditions, with water depth up to three times higher than the vegetation height. Such low relative submergences are highly relevant in hydraulic analyses of riverbank and floodplain flows but not adequately represented in existing formulas. The use of the deflected vegetation height as the characteristic height provided the most accurate modelling results, whereas the use of undeflected height resulted in significant errors. As a new development for submerged conditions, we proposed von Kármán scaling factor for improved model predictions. Overall, the results proved that LAI-based modelling is suitable also at low relative submergences for a wide range of vegetation densities (LAI = 1–5) and mean flow velocities (0.05–1.2 m s−1). For both emergent and slightly overtopped vegetation the JAR and VAS approaches outperformed the BAPmod-LAI approach that does not account for reconfiguration. The viscosity of the film water near hydrophilic surfaces is observed to be significantly higher than that of bulk water, i.e., up to approximately three times that of bulk water. Such an enhancement in viscosity can be attributed to the intensive solid-water interactions, which result in a spatially varying activation energy. An attempt is made herein to investigate the impact of spatially varying viscosity on film flow at the nanoscale. The spatially varying viscosity is described via a proposed viscosity profile equation. A governing equation for film flow incorporating spatially varying viscosity is then established by substituting the proposed viscosity profile equation into the mechanical equilibrium equation. Closed-form solutions for this governing equation are derived by introducing the no-slip boundary condition. The accuracy of the proposed viscosity profile equation and closed-form solutions is evaluated by comparing with experimental and molecular simulation data on viscosity, flow velocity profile, and average flow velocity. The results indicate that overlooking the spatial variation of viscosity can lead to overestimation of flow velocity and hydraulic conductivity for film flow in nanoscale pores by up to 5.5 and 14.0 times, respectively. Dynamic Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (DULM) has first been developed for non-invasive Pulsatility measurements in the rodent brain. DULM relies on the localization and tracking of microbubbles (MBs) injected into the bloodstream, to obtain highly resolved velocity and density cine-loops. Previous DULM techniques required ECG-gating, limiting its application to specific datasets, and increasing acquisition time. The objective of this study is to eliminate the need for ECG-gating in DULM experiments by introducing a motion-matching method for time registration. We developed a motion-matching algorithm based on tissue Doppler that leverages the cyclic tissue motion within the brain. Tissue Doppler was estimated for each group of frames in the acquisitions, at multiple locations identified as local maxima in the skin above the skull. Subsequently, each group of frames was time-registered to a reference group by delaying it based on the maximum correlation value between their respective tissue Doppler signals. This synchronization ensured that each group of frames aligned with the brain tissue motion of the reference group, and consequently, with its cardiac cycle. As a result, velocities of MBs could be averaged to retrieve flow velocity variations over time. Initially validated in ECG-gated acquisitions in a rat model (n = 1), the proposed method was successfully applied in a mice model in 2D (n = 3) and in a feline model in 3D (n = 1). Performing time-registration with the proposed motion-matching method or by using ECG-gating leads to similar results. For the first time, dynamic velocity and density cine-loops were extracted without the need for any information on the animal ECG, and complex dynamic markers such as the Pulsatility index were estimated. Results suggest that DULM can be performed without external gating, enabling the use of DULM on any ULM dataset where enough MBs are detectable. This paper designs and builds a stormwater pipe-river/channel experimental system at the first attempt to observe hydraulic dynamics between pipe flow and downstream water levels under different steady state conditions. In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) model is developed to facilitate the understanding of this complex hydraulic interaction, and the reliability of a widely used one-dimensional (1D) model is first investigated. Experiment and simulation results show that (1) a high downstream water level can increase pipe flow capacity at the early stage, and the pipe flow is followed by a slightly downward trend and finally rapidly decreased, (2) pipe flows exhibit complex behaviors during the transition from nonfull to full pipe flow by altering flow area and velocity, and (3) the observed flows are significantly lower than those from the 1D model for the nonfull pipe flow scenario. This study offers insights to the underlying complex hydraulic properties between pipe flows and downstream water levels, and also shows that the 1D model is insufficient to reveal such an interaction process, which may underestimate the urban flooding risk. Electrical submersible pump (ESP) is extensively utilized in industrial sectors such as petroleum, chemical, and nuclear energy. However, ESPs experience pressurization deterioration due to the high gas volume fraction (GVF), resulting in the pressurization failure. In this paper, a three-stage mixed-flow ESP with closed impeller structure is detailed analysis. The interstage hydraulic characteristics and pressurization deterioration mechanism of the mixed-flow ESP are investigated at various rotational speeds and inlet conditions by combining experimental and simulation. The population balance model (PBM) and renormalization group (RNG) κ-ε model are employed. As the liquid flowrate increases, the ESP experiences a "three-stage" downward trend in pressurization. It is discovered that the first booster stage has a lower inflow velocity and flow separation degree compared to the subsequent booster stages, resulting in a greater liquid-phase pressurization capacity. The gas-liquid pressurization exhibits a wave-shaped downward trend due to significant deterioration in stage-wise pressurization when the liquid flowrate is low. Once the inlet gas volume fraction (IGVF) reaches the first critical GVF, the gas aggregates on the impeller's suction surface are removed at the impeller outlet, creating an annular air mass, which creates a chaotic vortex absorbing the fluids' kinetic energy. This research compares auxiliary energy-assisted friction stir welding (FSW) techniques with conventional FSW when joining dissimilar materials. Specifically, it conducts numerical modeling and experimental validation for the effectiveness of plasma-assisted FSW and induction-assisted FSW for DH36 steel and 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. Fully coupled 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, incorporating the multi-species transport method, were developed, where the species mass fractions of the workpieces are transported through diffusion, convection, and reaction sources for individual species. Based on the temperature validation, the dedicated heat flux based on the rectangular heat flux and Gaussian heat flux distribution were considered for induction coil and plasma arc heating on the DH36 steel side, respectively. The established conventional and auxiliary energy-assisted FSW models were validated against experimentally observed temperature fields and the joints' material features. Results indicate that the assistance of plasma and induction auxiliary energy sources increased the temperature field, strain rate, and flow velocity without forming stagnant zones on the steel side caused by reduced dynamic viscosity. In plasma arc-assisted FSW, the steel could not extrude effectively from the base steel sheet due to deficient heat and flow velocity input; therefore, defect-prone coarse steel fragments were blended with the Al matrix. In induction-assisted FSW, the uninterrupted steel layer was extruded from the steel side and placed on the Al side, which was caused by enhanced heat build-up and flow velocity. Understanding the ecological conditions of vegetation growth in water sources is vital to appraise the influence of vegetation on river engineering. Based on the experimental information that is accessible, the consequences of vegetation on flow resistance is described as an alteration in the drag coefficient and the planned area. The current study analytically estimates the vertical distribution of stream-wise velocity in open-channel flow while considering rigid and flexible vegetation. The flow is vertically separated into top free water layer and bottom vegetation layer using the projected deflection height of both vegetation. Related momentum calculations for each layer are then derived. Based on the gathered experimental data, a 3D numerical model with various simulation situations is used to model, calibrate, and evaluate the artificial cylinders. A considerable deflection analysis is utilised to calculate the velocity-dependent stem height. This has proven to be more precise compared to formerly deflection investigation. The estimated outcomes show that precise predictions may be made for the vertical contours of vertical Reynolds shear stress based on mean horizontal velocity. Background: Maximum diameter measurements are used to assess the rupture risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs); however, these are not precise enough to predict all ruptures. Four‐dimensional (4D) flow MRI‐derived parameters provide additional information by visualizing hemodynamics in AAAs but merit further investigation before they are clinically applicable. Purpose: To assess the reproducibility of 4D flow MRI‐derived hemodynamics, to investigate possible correlations with lumen and maximum diameter, and to explore potential relationships with vorticity and aneurysm growth. Study Type: Prospective single‐arm study. Population: A total of 22 (71.5 ± 6.1 years, 20 male) asymptomatic AAA patients with a maximum diameter of at least 30 mm. Field Strength/Sequence: A 3.0 T/Free‐breathing 4D flow MRI phase‐contrast acquisition with retrospective ECG‐gating. Assessment: Patients underwent two consecutive 4D flow MRI scans 1‐week apart. Aortic volumes were segmented from time‐averaged phase contrast magnetic resonance angiographies. Reproducibility was assessed by voxelwise analysis after registration. Mean flow velocity, mean wall shear stress (WSS), mean lumen diameter, and qualitative vorticity scores were assessed. In addition, Dixon MRI and retrospective surveillance data were used to study maximum diameter (including thrombus), intraluminal thrombus volume (ILT), and growth rate. Statistical Tests: For reproducibility assessment, Bland–Altman analyses, Pearson correlation, Spearman's correlation, and orthogonal regression were conducted. Potential correlations between hemodynamics and vorticity scores were assessed using linear regression. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Test–retest median Pearson correlation coefficients for flow velocity and WSS were 0.85 (IQR = 0.08) m/sec and 0.82 (IQR = 0.10) Pa, respectively. Mean WSS significantly correlated with mean flow velocity (R = 0.75) and inversely correlated with mean lumen diameter (R = −0.73). No significant associations were found between 4D flow MRI‐derived hemodynamic parameters and maximum diameter (flow velocity: P = 0.98, WSS: P = 0.22). For the 300-kA graphitized cathode carbon block aluminum electrolyzer of a plant, this study constructed a simplified model using SOLIDWORKS software and carried out flow field simulation with the help of COMSOL Multiphysics 3D simulation software. At the same time, the actual flow field test was carried out on the same type of aluminum electrolyzer. By comparing and analyzing the simulation results with the actual test results, it was found that the simulated maximum flow velocity was 16.75 cm/s and the average flow velocity was 7.97 cm/s; the actual maximum flow velocity was 16.40 cm/s and the average flow velocity was 8.13 cm/s. There is a certain degree of error between the two, but the value of the error is in the acceptable range, which indicates that the flow field test using the numerical simulation method is reliable. Storage tank fire can pose great threats to life and environment as it can cause strong radiant heat, fast-spreading flame, and destructive explosion. In this research, a 1.5 m-diameter circular steel pan is used to simulate the full surface fire of a storage tank in an industrial park. A self-built fire-extinguishing system gently releasing foam at the rate of 11.4 L/min was applied for the evaluation of the effectiveness of different types of foam of extinguishing diesel/methanol pool fires. Experiments were conducted to analyze the temperature increases of fires after releasing different types of foam. In this research, the nondimensional average temperature 0.85 and 0.71 regard as the fire extinguishing temperatures of methanol and diesel fuel, respectively. Over the spreading process, the increase in foam spreading length over time still follows the power law. The fastest flow velocity of 6% FP/AR in methanol pool fire and 6% Synthetic foams in diesel pool fire was 0.0136 m s −1and 0.044 m s −1, respectively, with a foam application rate of 11.4 L/min. The results show that, in the methanol pool fire, the cooling effect of the foam is ranked as FP/AR > AFFF > AFFF/AR > S > FP > S/AR. And the cooling effect of foam for diesel is ranked as S > S/AR > AFFF > AFFF/AR > FP > FP/AR. Foam's cooling impact is especially notable in diesel pool fires. As for methanol pool fires, the foam extinguishing mechanism is mainly based on the "anti-soluble film" effect, which quickly forms a covering layer on the surface of the flammable liquid, seperating the flame from heat feedback and inhibiting the generation of flammable vapors, insulating itself against the air and ultimately asphyxiating the fire. The risk of coal spontaneous combustion in goaf is one of the disasters in coal mining, ventilation and extraction often aggravate air leakage from the goaf. Due to the unclear rule of expansion law and air leakage, the risk space for coal spontaneous combustion continues to occur. To investigate the influence of ventilation and extraction on the evolution of the risk space of coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) in goaf, further reveal the characteristics of air leakage and extraction in goaf and obtain the expansion law of CSC risk space. A three-dimensional model of goaf under surface drilling and gas extraction was developed. Using FLUENT numerical simulation software, taking a coal mine in Anhui Province, this study analyzes the influence factors, evolution law, and influence characteristics of CSC through field observations and numerical simulation. The research indicates that ventilation keeps the risk space of CSC expanding. The extraction of single drilling showed a local space expansion, while the extraction of double drilling shows the overall space expansion of the goaf. The air leakage flow path in goaf, air flow velocity vector in working face, gas concentration loss, and gas extraction characteristic parameters are determined. The loss of air leakage along the working surface meets four-stage: "strong in – flow - mixed flow – steady inflow – sudden outflow." It can be determined that the extraction intensity of single drilling should be greater than 34.8 m3/min, and the double drilling should be greater than 18.7 m3/min. The relationship between the coupling influence of ventilation and extraction and the expansion law of CSC risk space is determined, and the maximum risk space width of CSC can be predicted. In the field of nanotechnology, rotary jet spinning technology has garnered attention due to its unique advantages in fabricating composite nanofibers. The composite nanofibers prepared using this technology exhibit exceptional purity, uniformity, and consistency, thereby enhancing reliability and controllability in practical applications. During the process of rotary jet spinning, the spinning solution flows into the nozzle and converges at a micro‐triangle under the combined influence of centrifugal force, viscous force, surface tension, and gravity. Stepped jet refers to the flow phenomenon occurring within a channel with a gradually decreasing cross‐sectional area. In this process, an increase in the flow velocity of the composite spinning solution aids in stabilizing stretching at the micro‐triangle which is crucial for forming continuous jets. This article analyzes cone formation mechanisms for composite spinning solutions and stepped jet principles while establishing corresponding models that reflect relationships between solution velocity magnitude and parameters such as rotational speed, concentration, and nozzle diameter. As a flexible component in high-pressure vessels and pipeline systems, bellows experience significant fluid–structure interaction effects under high-speed internal fluids and external vibrations. Nevertheless, their dynamic response mechanisms coupled with fluid–structure interaction mentioned below have not yet been clarified so far. In this work, a novel pressure-balanced metal bellow (PBMB) for low-stiffness and high-pressure resistance is firstly proposed. Several fluid–structure interaction models were considered to study the dynamic response characteristics of the PBMB. An experimental platform associated with fluid–structure interaction was established to validate the effectiveness of its vibration attenuation performance. The results indicate that the PBMB has an obvious vibration attenuation effect in the range of 5–90Hz, and super-harmonic and sub-harmonic resonance phenomena occur in the range of 90–200Hz. Under constant fluid conditions, fluid density, viscosity, flow velocity, and pressure are positively correlated with the response amplitude of the PBMB. The response of the PBMB oscillates at the fluid entry point due to both pulsating flow velocity and pulsating pressure. After several cycles, the response caused by pulsating flow velocity gradually decays and stabilizes. Viscosity measurement is crucial in biomedical research and clinical diagnosis. Currently, rapid and non-contact methods for measuring viscosity remain challenging. We propose a method based on optical coherence tomography for fast, remote assessment of the liquid viscosity. The viscosity of the liquid sample was quantified according to Poiseuille's law, the flow velocity was determined using optical coherence tomography, and the real-time pressure difference was measured by two manometers. Glycerol–water mixtures with various viscosities were tested to assess the accuracy of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) viscosity measurement. Then, blood samples with different levels of hemodilution and hematocrit were measured to validate the feasibility of the OCT method in the blood viscosity measurement. The results indicate that the proposed method can provide rapid, non-contact liquid viscosity measurement. It could significantly impact research on hemodynamics and diagnosis of blood disorders. Introduction: The formation of bars and pools, characterized by concave and convex bed morphology, is a typical feature of curved rivers. The channel bed morphology has a significant influence on the flow structures in curved channels. Methods: Based on data from physical model experiments, this study employs the RNG k-e model and the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method to perform threedimensional numerical simulations of flow in continuous curved channels. Results: By comparing the variations in flow structures between channels with a flat bed and channels with bars and pools, the results showthat the presence of bars and pools leads to an increase in longitudinal flow velocity on the convex bank side near the entrance of the upstream bend, while in the downstream bend it is opposite. The high-velocity region shifts slower towards the concave bank along the bend. The presence of point barsweakens the circulation near the convex bank in the upstream bend, resulting in a smaller circulation intensity. The decrease in circulation intensity is the largest (-23.91%) at the apex of the bend. In the downstream bend, the remaining circulation from the upstreambend attenuates slower in the pool and has a greater impact distance, increasing the circulation intensity in the downstream bend. The section near the bend entrance shows the largest increase in circulation intensity, with a rate of 128.18%. The unevenness of the bed topography increases the unevenness of the bed shear stress in the downstream bend. Discussion: The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex flow structures and evolution trends in natural curved rivers, providing scientific basis for the management of curved river channels. Passive sampling is a crucial method for evaluating concentrations of hydrophilic organic compounds in the aquatic environment, but it is insufficiently understood to what extent passive samplers capture the intermittent emissions that frequently occur for this group of compounds. In the present study, silicone sheets and styrene-divinyl benzene-reversed phase sulfonated extraction disks with and without a polyethersulfone membrane were exposed under semi-field conditions in a 31 m3 flume at three different flow velocities. Natural processes and spiking/dilution measures caused aqueous concentrations to vary strongly with time. The data were analyzed using two analytical models that account for these time-variable concentrations: a sampling rate model and a diffusion model. The diffusion model generally gave a better fit of the data than the sampling rate model, but the difference in residual errors was quite small (median errors of 19 vs. 25% for silicone and 22 vs. 25% for SDB-RPS samplers). The sampling rate model was therefore adequate enough to evaluate the time-integrative capabilities of the samplers. Sampler performance was best for SDB-RPS samplers with a polyethersulfone membrane, despite the occurrence of lag times for some compounds (0.1 to 0.4 days). Sampling rates for this design also spanned a narrower range (80 to 110 mL/day) than SDB-RPS samplers without a membrane (100 to 660 mL/day). A kettle reboiler uses the latent heat from the condensation of high-temperature and high-pressure steam in the tube to produce low-pressure saturated steam in the outer shell. The deposition of particles on the tube may change the boiling heat transfer mode from nucleate boiling to natural convection, thereby deteriorating the heat transfer performance of the kettle reboiler. Therefore, it is very important to explore the deposition characteristics of particles in the kettle reboiler. In this study, the RPI boiling model based on the Euler–Euler method is used to analyze the water boiling process on the surface of the tube bundle. The DRW model and critical adhesion velocity model based on the Euler–Lagrangian method are used to calculate the motion of particles during the boiling process and the deposition (rebound) behavior. The results show that the boiling of liquid water enhances the local flow velocity of the fluid, so that the maximum flow velocity appears around the near-wall region. The local high-speed flow disperses the particles in the wake flow of the tube bundle, which inhibits the impact of particles on the wall. As the particle size increases, the wall adhesion and fluid drag on the particles are weakened, and the gravity effect gradually becomes dominant, increasing the residence time of the particles in the tube bundle and the frequency of particle impact on the wall. Sediment erosion of hydraulic turbines is a significant challenge in hydropower plants in mountainous regions like the European Alps, the Andes, and the Himalayan region. The erosive wear of Pelton runner buckets is influenced by a variety of factors, including the size, hardness, and concentration of silt particles; the velocity of the flow and impingement angle of the jet; the properties of the base material; and the operating hours of the turbine. This research aims to identify the locations most susceptible to erosion and to elucidate the mechanisms of erosion propagation in two distinct designs of Pelton runner buckets. The Pelton runner buckets were subjected to static condition tests with particle sizes of 500 microns and a concentration of 14,000 mg/L. The buckets were coated with four layers of paint, sequentially applied in red, yellow, green, and blue. The two Pelton buckets, D 1 and D 2 , were evaluated for their erosion resistance properties. D 2 demonstrated superior erosion resistance, attributed to its geometrical features and material composition, lower erosion rates, less material loss, and improved surface integrity compared with D1. This difference is primarily attributed to factors such as the splitter's thickness, the jet's impact angle, the velocity at which particles strike, and the concentration of sand. D 2 exhibits a great performance in terms of erosion resistance among the two designs. This study reveals that the angle of jet impingement influences erosion progression and material loss, which is important to consider during a Pelton turbine's design and operating conditions. Objectives: To attain an understanding of pachyvein formation seen with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) by measuring the choroidal blood flow (CBF) velocity and to apply the findings to existing hydrodynamic theorems. Methods: Nineteen subjects with monocular CSC (mean age 51.8 ± 12.7 years) were included. Laser speckle flowgraphy measured the mean blur rate (MBR) in the foveal and perifoveal regions, and the findings were applied to the Equation of Continuity (Q = AV) and Bernoulli's theorem (1/2V2 + P/ρ = constant). Results: The mean foveal/perifoveal MBRs in the CSC eyes were 6.4 ± 3.2/9.6 ± 3.2 (p < 0.001). The mean MBRs in the non-CSC eyes were 8.3 ± 3.2/7.9 ± 2.4 (p = 0.37). The significant foveal CBF velocity decrease in CSC eyes occurs because of exudation from the hyperpermeable choriocapillaris. The subsequent decrease in blood volume due to the exudation elicits a decrease in the blood flow velocity in the inferior venules in accordance with the Equation of Continuity. The decrease in the blood flow velocity may result in an elevated blood flow pressure in the inferior venules and veins at the exudation site, in accordance with Bernoulli's theorem. Conclusion: A significant decrease in the foveal MBR may result from exudation from the hyperpermeable macular choriocapillaris. This decreased velocity may elicit a blood pressure elevation that can expand the inferior venules and veins at the exudation site, so-called pachyvein and pachychoroid formation. Background: Stress-transthoracic Doppler echocardiography (S-TDE) provides a noninvasive assessment of coronary flow parameters in the left anterior descending artery (LAD). However, the association between morphological characteristics and coronary flow changes after elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the relationships between periprocedural coronary flow changes observed on S-TDE and lesion-specific plaque characteristics obtained by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the interrogated vessels in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). Methods and results: Patients with CCS who underwent pre- and post-PCI S-TDE and elective fractional flow reserve (FFR)-guided PCI under OCT guidance for de novo single LAD lesions were included. S-TDE-derived hyperemic diastolic peak flow velocity (hDPV) was used as a surrogate for coronary flow. Lesions were categorized into two groups based on the %hDPV increase or decrease. The baseline clinical, physiological, and OCT findings were compared between the groups. In total, 103 LAD lesions were studied in 103 patients. After PCI, hDPV significantly increased from 55.6 cm/s to 69.5 cm/s (P<0.01), with a median %hDPV increase of 27.2 (6.32–59.1) %, while %hDPV decreased in 20 (19.4%) patients. The FFR improved in all patients. On OCT, layered plaques were more frequently present in the culprit vessels in the %hDPV-decrease group than in the %hDPV-increase group (85.0% vs. 50.6%, P = 0.01). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of layered plaques and high pre-PCI hDPV were independent predictors of %hDPV decrease. Conclusions: In patients who underwent successful uncomplicated elective PCI for de novo single LAD lesions, the presence of layered plaques was independently associated with hyperemic coronary flow decrease as assessed by S-TDE. Large-span arch greenhouse has gained widespread application in fruit and vegetable production in recent years, due to the convenient facility operation, high land use efficiency, suitability for multiple coverings, and external heat preservation. However, internal turbulence can often occur in the expansion of the span and height of the large-span arch greenhouse. The resulting uniformity of the greenhouse environment can then affect the efficient production of greenhouse crops. In this study, a multi-field coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was constructed to integrate the facility structure and tomato plant aerodynamics, according to agricultural industry demand. The research object was selected as the 20 m span large-span arch greenhouse in Laiwu district, Jinan City, Shandong province (36.14° N, 117.28° E), China. A systematic investigation was carried out to explore the influence of the height of the arch greenhouse on the spatial and temporal distribution and evolution of the turbulent structure inside the large-span arch greenhouse. An analysis was also made to clarify the relationship between the wind and the temperature distribution, turbulence intensity, summer ventilation, and cooling efficiency, and the height of the arch greenhouse. Seven kinds of large-span arch greenhouse were established with 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5 m heights. The results show that there was turbulent behavior in the large-span arch greenhouses, indicating the mostly double vortex in the section. The air-flow entered the greenhouse via the bottom vent on the windward side, then ascended along the lower side of the greenhouse film, and finally descended towards the roof area. There was a tendency for the stabilization in the position of the inflection point, as the ridge height increased beyond 6.0 m. Therefore, the better uniformity of air flow and temperature distribution were, the higher the uniformity of the greenhouse was. The large-span arch greenhouse with a height of 6.0 m shared the highest average flow velocity at the crop canopy, which was in the appropriate range and relatively high. The average temperatures were also relatively low, which were 0.404 ℃ and 0.026 ℃ lower than those of the arch greenhouse with a height of 5.5 and 6.5 m, respectively. The turbulence intensity of the large-span arch greenhouse with a height of 4.5-5.5 m was significantly higher than that with a height of more than 6.0 m. There was a small difference, after the ridge height exceeded 6.0 m. Once the height of the greenhouse was 4.5 m, the ventilation efficiency was 2.24. After that, the efficiency of ventilation decreased with the increase in the height of the greenhouse. There was a relatively high value when the ridge height reached 6.0 and 6.5 m. The ridge height of 7.0 m corresponded to the lowest ventilation efficiency of 1.60. The large span greenhouse with a 4.5 m ridge height exhibited the higher ventilation efficiency, but the lower air change rate. The large span greenhouse with a 7.5 m ridge height shared the lower air change rate and ventilation efficiency. The outstanding ventilation and cooling performance of the large-span arch greenhouse in summer was determined by many factors. In a 20 m long-span arch greenhouse with shoulder, a better structure was achieved with the ridge height of 6.0-6.5 m and the ridge height of 6.0 m, in order to better consider the factors of economy and safety. Nonthrombotic iliac vein lesions (NIVLs) are significant causes of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) in the left lower limb and symptom recurrence following left lower limb varicose vein treatment. The goal of this study was to explore the haemodynamic and morphological characteristics of iliac veins in patients with NIVLs. Pressure at the caudal end of the stenotic left common iliac vein (LCIV) segment, local blood flow velocity, and time-averaged wall shear stress in the stenotic segment exhibited positive correlations with the clinical CVI classification (R = 0.92, p < 0.001; R = 0.94, p < 0.001; R = 0.87, p < 0.001), while the relative retention time showed a negative correlation (R = -0.94, p < 0.001). The pressure difference (∆P) between the two ends of the stenotic segment and the velocity difference (∆V) between the stenotic segment and the caudal end were positively correlated with the clinical classification (R = 0.92, p < 0.001; R = 0.9, p < 0.001). The cross-sectional area stenosis rate and length of the stenotic LCIV segment were positively correlated with the clinical classification (R = 0.93, p < 0.001; R = 0.63, p < 0.001). The results suggest that haemodynamic assessment of the iliac vein could effectively portray blood flow disturbances in stenotic segments of the LCIV, potentially reflecting the degree of iliac vein stenosis. Estimating the flow velocity and discharge in rivers is of particular interest for monitoring, modeling, and research purposes. Instruments for measuring water level and surface velocity are generally mounted on bridge decks, and this poses a challenge because the bridge structure, with piers and abutments, can perturb the flow field. The current research aims to investigate the applicability of entropy theory to estimate the velocity distribution and the discharge in the vicinity of river bridges. For this purpose, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to obtain three-dimensional flow fields along a stretch of the Paglia River (central Italy), where a historical multi-arch bridge strongly affects flood flows. The input data for the entropy model include the cross-sectional bathymetry and the surface velocity provided by the numerical simulations. A total of 12 samples, including three different flow conditions at four cross-sections, one upstream and three downstream of the bridge, are considered. It is found that the entropy model can be reliably applied upstream of the bridge, also when forced with a single (i.e., the maximum) value of the surface velocity, with errors on total discharge below 13 % in the considered case. By contrast, downstream of the bridge, the wakes generated by the bridge piers strongly affect the velocity distribution, both in the spanwise and in the vertical directions and for very long distances. Here, notwithstanding the complex and multimodal spanwise distribution of flow velocity, the entropy model estimates the discharge with error lower than 8 % if forced with the river-wide distribution of the surface velocity. The present study has important implications for the optimal positioning of sensors and suggests the potential of using CFD modeling and entropy theory jointly to foster greater knowledge of river systems. Transonic buffet flow is a classical complex and unstable flow that has a negative effect on aircraft fly safety. Therefore, it is crucial to study the unsteady characteristics of buffet flow. The numerical analysis method is very useful in achieving the aforementioned goal. In this paper, focused on the typical supercritical airfoil OAT15A in fixed and pitching conditions, unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) closed with the sst-kω turbulence mode, coupled with the structure dynamical equation, is utilized to investigate the transonic buffet flow. Firstly, from the perspective of coherent flow structure, flow velocity divergence snapshots constructed from unsteady flow solutions are used to analyze the feature of transonic buffets in the two cases mentioned. Then, DMD modes are extracted by the dynamic mode decomposition technique from the velocity snapshots and adopted to analyze the flow modes of the two distinct flow fields. The numerical simulation results show that, in the fixed case, the regular motion feature of the buffet is present, the shock oscillation is closely related to the vortex structure, and the durations of rearward and forward movements of the shock are both equal to half of the buffet period. In the pitching case, the duration of the rearward motion of the primary shock is approximately five eighths of one buffet period, and the secondary shock appears with the primary one moving downstream, and they interact with each other. The region of the shock movement is larger than that of the fixed case, and there is chaotic flow rather than periodic flow in its wake. Structural elastic oscillation changes the characteristics of the aerodynamic response, which is solely affected by the frequency of the pitching oscillation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the problem of low efficiency and the lack of a water supply at the Hemmat Water Intake, in Iran, where severe sediment accumulation was observed at the intake mouth. The Flow-3D software was used to simulate the flow patterns under various scenarios of hydraulic regimentation works. The considered parameters include: (i) three alternative locations of the spur dike (i.e., a spur dike placed on the opposite side of the intake inlet and aligned with the upstream edge of the intake, to be regarded as a witness spur dike; a spur dike at a distance DS of 7 m downstream of the witness spur dike, which implies a dimensionless distance DS/bi1 of 1/3, with bi1 being the intake opening width; and a spur dike at a distance of 7 m upstream of the witness spur dike with a dimensionless distance, still, of 1/3); (ii) four spur dike lengths, LS/Br, with LS being the effective spur dike length and Br the approach river width; and (iii) five spur dike deviation angles of 75, 90, 105, 120, and 135 degrees (the deviation angle is the angle between the spur dike axis and the original river-bank line from which the spur dike extends). The results showed that, with the increase in the relative spur dike length (LS/Br), the velocity of the flow entering the water intake increases by 11%. A spur deviation angle of 135 degrees increases the flow depth at the intake inlet by 9% compared to a smaller deviation angle of 75 degrees. In addition, the spur dike increases the flow shear stresses at the intake inlet by up to 50%. Overall, the main flow of the river with the highest velocity and depth, and best directed towards the water intake, occurs for the placement of the longest spur dike (i.e., LS/Br = 0.46) in front of the inlet (i.e., witness spur dike) and for a spur dike deviation angle of 135 degrees. The spur dike increases the shear stress at the intake entrance by more than five times with respect to the case of its absence. In general, the presence of a spur dike on the opposite bank and with a deviation angle in the direction of the intake inlet well directs the main flow towards the canal intake. Moreover, it reduces the possibility of sedimentation in the canal inlet by increasing the flow velocity. Therefore, the results of this study could also be useful in increasing the hydraulic efficiency of lateral intakes by reducing the sedimentation phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored the three-dimensional flow characteristics in a recirculation zone near a permeable buttress in curved channels with varying curvatures. Understanding these characteristics is crucial for managing natural river bends, as rivers often meander, with backwater zones formed behind obstructions, such as mountains in the riverbed. The direct comparison of the recirculation zones across different bend types revealed the correlation between the flow characteristics and bend curvature. However, previous studies have focused on flow velocities and turbulent kinetic energy without a probability density analysis. This analysis provided a more comprehensive understanding of the flow characteristics. Gaussian kernel density estimation was applied in this study to observe the distribution of the flow velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate. The results indicated that the longitudinal time-averaged flow velocity in the recirculation zone typically ranged from −0.2 m/s to −0.8 m/s, with all the skewness coefficients exceeding 0. The horizontal time-averaged flow velocity in the recirculation zone fell between −0.175 m/s and −0.1 m/s. The skewness coefficients were negative at water depths of 16%, 33%, and 50% within the 90° and 180° bends, indicating a non-normal distribution. The probability density distribution of turbulent kinetic energy in the recirculation zone was skewed, ranging from 0 to 0.02 m2·s−2, with the skewness coefficient almost always greater than 0. The plot demonstrated multiple peaks, indicating a broad distribution of turbulent kinetic energy rather than a concentration within a specific interval. This distribution included both the high and low regions of turbulent kinetic energy. Although the overall rate of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation in the recirculation zone was relatively low, there were multiple peaks, suggesting the localized areas with higher dissipation rates alongside the regions with lower rates. These findings were significant for managing the meandering river channels, restoring the subaqueous ecosystems, understanding the pollutant diffusion mechanisms in backwater areas, the sedimentation of nutrient-laden sediments, and optimizing the parameters for spur dike design. The mean slope flow velocity is critical in soil erosion models but the mechanism of its variation under rigid vegetation cover remains unclear. On natural slopes, vegetation grows predominantly perpendicular to the horizontal plane (BH), with some growing perpendicularly to the slope surface (BS); however, current research often neglects the effects of these two growth directions on the mean flow velocity. We conducted simulation experiments using different coverage levels, rigid vegetation, slope angles, and flow rates and showed that the flow rate and slope significantly influenced the mean flow velocity. As the coverage of rigid vegetation increased, the mean flow velocity increased more under conditions perpendicular to the horizontal plane (BH) and those perpendicular to the slope (BS). A model for predicting mean flow velocity was developed using vegetation equivalent roughness and the Manning formula, which accurately predicted flow velocity in different conditions.
