Background: There is limited evidence from globally diverse samples on the prevalence and correlates of meeting the global guideline of 180 minutes per day of total physical activity (TPA) among 3- to 4-year-olds. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 797 (49.2% girls) 3- to 4-year-olds from 17 middle- and high-income countries who participated in the pilot phases 1 and 2 of the SUNRISE International Study of Movement Behaviours in the Early Years. Daily step count was measured using thigh-worn activPAL accelerometers. Children wore the accelerometers for at least one 24-hour period. Children were categorized as meeting the TPA guideline based on achieving ≥11,500 steps per day. Descriptive analyses were conducted to describe the proportion of meeting the TPA guideline for the overall sample and each of the sociodemographic variables, and 95% CIs were calculated. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the sociodemographic correlates of meeting the TPA guideline. Results: Mean daily step count was 10,295 steps per day (SD = 4084). Approximately one-third of the sample (30.9%, 95% CI, 27.6–34.2) met the TPA guideline. The proportion meeting the guideline was significantly lower among girls (adjusted OR [aOR] = 0.70, 95% CI, 0.51–0.96) and 4-year-olds (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI, 0.34–0.75) and higher among rural residents (aOR = 1.78, 95% CI, 1.27–2.49) and those from lower middle-income countries (aOR = 1.35, 95% CI, 0.89–2.04). Conclusions: The findings suggest that a minority of children might meet the TPA guideline globally, and the risk of not meeting the guideline differed by sociodemographic indicators. These findings suggest the need for more surveillance of TPA in young children globally and, possibly, interventions to improve childhood health and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To examine whether changes in public open spaces (POS) were associated with leisure-time walking (LTW) between 2014 and 2021. Methods: The sample comprised a prospective cohort of individuals living in São Paulo City, Brazil. The baseline sample was collected in 2014/2015 (4042 people aged 12 y or older) and the second wave in 2020/2021 (1431 people aged 18 y or older, 35.4% of total). Changes in POS scores in 500-m network buffers were based on household address, including positive or negative maintenance and increases or decreases in parks, public squares, and bike paths between 2015 and 2020. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to evaluate LTW in the baseline and second wave. To examine the association of LTW with changes in POS, we used multilevel models in 4 levels: health administration areas, census tracts, individuals, and observations of individuals. The exposure was the POS tertiles, and the outcome was LTW. Results: Changes in LTW prevalence were observed in both periods and according to POS tertiles distributions. When adjusted for time (baseline/second wave), gender, education, and age, the highest POS tertile was significantly associated with a high likelihood for LTW (odds ratio = 1.44; 95% confidence interval, 1.03–2.02). Conclusion: The results showed that people in São Paulo who lived within 500-m buffers with the highest access to POS were more likely to practice LTW between 2014/2015 and 2020/2021. These results have important implications for policies that were implemented in 2014, including the New Master Plan to contribute to São Paulo's good ranking among healthy cities. Background: This article presents the recommendations from the Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population. Methods: A steering committee composed of a chair, 6 experts in physical activity, and representatives from the Ministry of Health/Brazil, Pan American Health Organization, Brazilian Society of Physical Activity and Health designed the guidelines, which was implemented by 8 working groups, as follows: (1) understanding physical activity, (2) children up to 5 years old, (3) children and youth from 6 to 17 years old, (4) adults, (5) older adults (60 years and above), (6) physical education at school, (7) pregnant and postpartum women, and (8) people with disabilities. The methodological steps included evidence syntheses, hearings with key stakeholders, and public consultation. Results: Across 8 chapters, the guidelines provide definitions of physical activity and sedentary behavior, informing target groups on types of physical activity, dosage (frequency, intensity, and duration), benefits, and supporting network for physical activity adoption. The guidelines are openly available in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Braille and in audio versions, with a supplementary guide for health professionals and decision makers, and a report about the preparation and references. Conclusions: The Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population provide evidence-based recommendations, being a public-directed resource to contribute to the physical activity promotion in Brazil. Background: This article describes the process and methods used in the development of the first ever Physical Activity Guidelines for the Brazilian Population. Methods: The steering committee established 8 working groups based on other guidelines and the Brazilian agenda for public health and physical activity (PA) promotion: (1) understanding PA; (2) children up to 5 years; (3) children and youth (6–17 y); (4) adults; (5) older adults (60 years and above); (6) physical education at school; (7) pregnant and postpartum women; and (8) people with disabilities. Working groups were formed to (1) synthesize the literature on each topic; (2) conduct workshops with stakeholders, health professionals, researchers, and the public; and (3) prepare a draft chapter for open online consultation. Results: The document provides guidance for the population on the benefits of being active and recommendations regarding the amount (frequency, intensity, and duration) of PA recommended across all chapters. It also includes information on supporting networks for PA. Conclusions: The PA guidelines are widely accessible in Portuguese, including versions in English, Spanish, audiobook, and Braille, and will assist policy makers and professionals from several sectors to promote PA. Background: Physical education (PE) plays a critical role in the healthy development of youth; however, the influence of PE classes in helping to provide students with health-related behavior patterns is not clear. This study aims to analyze whether participation in PE classes is associated with health-related behavior among high school students. Methods: A total of 4210 students attending public high schools in Pernambuco (northeast of Brazil) were selected using random 2-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected by using the Global School-based Student Health Survey. The independent variable was the frequency of participation in PE classes, whereas physical activity, television viewing, smoking, and alcohol, fruit, vegetables and soda consumption were dependent variables. Logistic regressions were carried out to perform crude and adjusted analysis of the association between enrollment in PE classes and health-related behaviors. Results: Sixty-five percent of students do not take part in PE classes, with a significantly higher proportion among females (67.8%). It was observed that enrollment in PE classes was positively associated with physical activity, TV viewing, and fruit consumption, but was negatively associated with soda drinking. The likelihood of reporting being active and eating fruit on a daily basis was 27% and 45% higher, respectively, among those who participate in at least 2 classes per week in comparison with those who do not. Students who participate in PE classes had 28-30% higher likelihood of reporting lower TV viewing during week days. Conclusions: Findings suggest that higher levels of enrollment in PE classes could play a role in the promotion of health-related behaviors among high school students. (Contains 4 tables.)

This study evaluates the validity and reliability of the Baecke questionnaire on habitual physical activity when applied to a population of HIV/AIDS subjects. Validity was determined by comparing measurements for 30 subjects of peak oxygen uptake, peak workload, and energy expenditure with scores for occupational physical activity (OPA), physical exercise in leisure (PEL), leisure and locomotion activities (LLA), and total score (TS). Reliability was determined by testing and retesting 29 subjects at intervals of 15-30 days. Validity was evaluated with the Pearson correlation and reliability analyses were done using the intraclass correlation, paired Student t-test, and Bland-Altman methods. Peak VO2 and peak workload had significant correlation with PEL (r = 0.41; r = 0.43; respectively). Energy expenditure had a significant correlation with OPA (r = 0.64). The intraclass coefficients were 0.70 or more for OPA, PEL and TS. There was no difference in OPA, PEL, LLA and TS between the two evaluations. The Bland-Altman methods showed that there was good agreement between the measurements for all habitual physical activities scores. Results show that the Baecke questionnaire is valid for the evaluation of habitual physical activity among people living with HIV/AIDS.

OBJETIVO: Descrever métodos e resultados iniciais de sistema de monitoramento de fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis por meio de entrevistas telefônicas. MÉTODOS: Estudou-se amostra probabilística (n=2.122) da população adulta do Município de São Paulo residente em domicílios conectados à rede de telefonia fixa, com amostragem realizada em duas etapas: sorteio de linhas telefônicas e sorteio do morador do domicílio a ser entrevistado. Foi aplicado questionário para investigar características demográficas e socioeconômicas, padrão de alimentação e de atividade física, consumo de cigarros e de bebidas alcoólicas, peso e altura recordados e auto-referência a diagnóstico médico de hipertensão arterial e diabetes, entre outros quesitos. Foram calculadas estimativas sobre a prevalência de fatores de risco selecionados para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis para a população adulta com telefone e para a população adulta total do município. Neste último caso, população total, foram aplicados à amostra fatores de ponderação que levaram em conta diferenças demográficas e socioeconômicas entre a população com telefone e a população total do município. RESULTADOS: Foram observadas diferenças substanciais entre os sexos quanto à freqüência da maioria dos fatores de risco estudados, sendo significativamente mais freqüentes em homens o consumo insuficiente de frutas e hortaliças, o consumo excessivo de bebidas alcoólicas e o excesso de peso; e nas mulheres foram mais freqüentes o sedentarismo e a hipertensão. Possibilidades adicionais de estratificação da prevalência de fatores de risco permitidas pelo sistema de monitoramento foram ilustradas a partir de exemplos abrangendo faixa etária, nível de escolaridade e área de residência na cidade dos entrevistados. CONCLUSÕES: O desempenho do sistema de monitoramento, avaliado a partir da representatividade e confiabilidade das estimativas obtidas e do custo por entrevista realizada, mostrou-se adequado e, de modo geral, superior a sistemas equivalentes existentes em países desenvolvidos. O custo por entrevista realizada foi oito vezes inferior ao custo estimado por sistemas semelhantes existentes em países desenvolvidos e quatro a oito vezes inferior ao custo de inquéritos domiciliares tradicionais realizados no Município de São Paulo.

OBJETIVO: Validar métodos de estimativas da gordura corporal (somatória de espessura de dobras cutâneas, circunferência da cintura (CC) e razão cintura-quadril (RCQ)) em portadores do HIV/Aids, tendo como padrão ouro a absortometria por dupla emissão de raios-X (Dexa) e a tomografia computadorizada de abdômen (TCA). MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 15 portadores do HIV/Aids tratados em uma unidade de saúde coligada a um hospital público universitário, São Paulo. Foram medidas a gordura subcutânea total (GST) mediante a somatória da espessura de sete dobras (bíceps, tríceps, subescapular, axilar média, supra-ilíaca, abdominal e panturrilha medial), a gordura subcutânea central (GSC) (somatória da espessura de quatro dobras) e a gordura subcutânea de membros (GSM) (somatória da espessura de três dobras). A GST, GSC e GSM foram comparadas com as medidas de gordura obtidas pela Dexa. A CC, a RCQ e a GSC foram comparadas com as medidas de gordura obtidas pela TCA. Na análise estatística, utilizou-se o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson (r) e foi utilizado o teste de Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS: A gordura medida pela Dexa foi correlacionada com GST, a GSC e GSM, mesmo após o ajuste pela idade (r>0,80 para todos). A gordura total de abdômen medida pela TCA foi correlacionada com a CC, RCQ e a GSC após o ajuste pela idade (r>0,80 para todos). CONCLUSÕES: Os métodos de estimativa da gordura corporal devem ser escolhidos de acordo com o tipo de gordura a ser avaliada e podem ser utilizados em pesquisas e nos serviços de saúde como alternativa à Dexa e TCA para portadores do HIV/Aids.

OBJETIVO: Descrever a metodologia de avaliação da atividade física habitual, utilizanda em uma pesquisa em população masculina, por meio de um questionário já validado. MÉTODOS: O questionário de atividade física habitual de Baecke, traduzido para a língua portuguesa e, a seguir, foi realizado o back translation. Em sua versão final o questionário foi aplicado em estudo epidemiológico transversal, realizado com 326 homens com idade igual ou superior a 50 anos. A consistência interna entre as questões foi analisada pelo a de Cronbach e foram calculados os coeficientes de correlação de Spearman entre os escores de atividade física habitual, bem como os coeficientes de correlação parcial, ajustados por idade, índice de massa corporal e escolaridade. RESULTADOS: A consistência interna mostrou-se satisfatória nas magnitudes de atividade física ocupacional e exercícios físicos no lazer. Foram obtidas correlações significativas entre todos os escores de atividades físicas com o escore total de atividade física habitual, independente da idade, escolaridade e índice de massa corporal. CONCLUSÕES: O questionário Baecke mostrou-se um instrumento prático para avaliar a atividade física habitual, aliando rapidez na aplicabilidade e facilidade no entendimento para as respostas, sendo indicado para estudos epidemiológicos no Brasil.
