Purpose: While the expectancy–value theory recognizes the significance of cost as an essential component, it has garnered minimal attention in physical education. Utilizing two separate datasets, we explored the degree to which the inclusion of cost in an expectancy–value–cost model could augment its predictive capability. Method: Study 1 utilized a cross-sectional data set (N = 144) to investigate the predictive roles of expectancy belief, task value, and cost on behavioral and emotional engagement. Study 2 employed a longitudinal data set (N = 251) to assess how these variables influenced the hypothetical choice of attending physical education and cardiorespiratory fitness. Results: Cost played a significant role in explaining additional variance, surpassing what could be predicted through expectancy and value. Specifically, cost emerged as a crucial factor in predicting emotional engagement, hypothetical choice, and cardiorespiratory fitness. This study evaluated physical activity interventions designed for individuals with visual impairments and sought to guide health intervention scientists aiming to promote physical activity in this demographic. We delved into the specifics of participants' visual impairments, intervention features, accommodation approaches, and replicability prospects. The search spanned four databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL, SportDiscus, and Scopus, providing a wide scope and diversity of potential studies. There were no restrictions on publication years. We reviewed 13 studies, totaling 15 interventions. A consensus on visual-impairment definitions remains elusive, and the intervention dosages displayed variability. Notably, 66.7% (n = 7) integrated behavior-change techniques to amplify physical activity levels. Multiple studies employed audio descriptions as an accommodation method. While most studies provided adequate information for potential replication, detailed study protocols were frequently absent. Manipulating the amount of muscle mass engaged during exercise can noninvasively inform the contribution of central cardiovascular and peripheral vascular-oxidative functions to endurance performance. To better understand the factors contributing to exercise limitation in older and younger individuals, exercise performance was assessed during single-leg and double-leg cycling. 16 older (67 ± 5 years) and 14 younger (35 ± 5 years) individuals performed a maximal exercise using single-leg and double-leg cycling. The ratio of single-leg to double-leg cycling power (RatioPower SL/DL) was compared between age groups. The association between fitness (peak oxygen consumption, peak power output, and physical activity levels) and RatioPower SL/DL was explored. The RatioPower SL/DL was greater in older compared with younger individuals (1.14 ± 0.11 vs. 1.06 ± 0.08, p =.041). The RatioPower SL/DL was correlated with peak oxygen consumption (r =.886, p <.001), peak power output relative to body mass (r =.854, p <.001), and levels of physical activity (r =.728, p =.003) in the younger but not older subgroup. Reducing the amount of muscle mass engaged during exercise improved exercise capacity to a greater extent in older versus younger population and may reflect a greater reduction in central cardiovascular function compared with peripheral vascular-oxidative function with aging. Exercise professionals often hold anti-fat attitudes, which contribute to weight stigma and discrimination in physical activity contexts. This study examined the effects of an online weight stigma intervention on exercise professionals' attitudes toward fatness. Participants were 105 exercise professionals who were employed at least part-time at university recreation centers in the United States. In this randomized controlled trial, participants were randomized into an intervention online course to decrease weight stigma or a control online course to learn about communication techniques to enhance motivation for physical activity. Attitudes about fatness were assessed at pre- and post-course using the Fat Attitudes Assessment Toolkit (FAAT). There were significant increases in the fat acceptance composite score in the intervention group compared to the control group, suggesting recreation center staff who completed the intervention WIT FITS course experienced more positive evaluations of fat people as a result of the intervention. The risk of developing medium- and long-term sequelae after recovery from COVID-19 is validated. Long-COVID burden represents a major health care issue, thus paving the way to effective prevention and/or treatment measures. Physical activity prevents many human pathologies, including COVID-19. Being physically active before and immediately after a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection substantially lowers the risk of developing long-COVID. In addition, long-COVID is an important cause of physical inactivity. Physically inactive individuals are at increased risk of developing long-COVID, while patients with long-COVID are more likely to reduce their physical activity levels after recovering from the acute infection, with the risk of generating a continuous loop. This harmful interaction needs to be recognized by public health institutions, and the adoption of physical activity as a routine clinical practice in all individuals after a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection needs to be proactively promoted. Online exercise programming has surged in popularity; however, little is known about older adults' perceptions and experiences of online exercise. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine older adults' (aged 59–82 years) experiences and perceptions of an online exercise program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nineteen individuals (individuals who used the online exercise program and those who did not) completed a semistructured interview. Three main themes were generated from the data using reflexive thematic analysis: (a) can online exercise really work for older adults? (b) technology attitudes and experiences influence online participation, and (c) barriers and advantages of the online exercise program and the home environment. Most participants who took part were able to overcome initial barriers through technical support and experience. Our findings highlight ways to promote advantages and address barriers of online exercise for older adults and emphasize the importance of fostering social experiences and training online exercise instructors. Many factors contribute to the ability of a microbial species to persist when encountering complexly contaminated environments including time of exposure, the nature and concentration of contaminants, availability of nutritional resources, and possession of a combination of appropriate molecular mechanisms needed for survival. Herein we sought to identify genes that are most important for survival of Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae in contaminated groundwater environments containing high concentrations of nitrate and metals using the metal-tolerant Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) isolate, Pantoea sp. MT58 (MT58). Survival fitness experiments in which a randomly barcoded transposon insertion (RB-TnSeq) library of MT58 was exposed directly to contaminated ORR groundwater samples from across a nitrate and mixed metal contamination plume were used to identify genes important for survival with increasing exposure times and concentrations of contaminants, and availability of a carbon source. Genes involved in controlling and using carbon, encoding transcriptional regulators, and related to Gram-negative outer membrane processes were among those found to be important for survival in contaminated ORR groundwater. A comparative genomics analysis of 75 Pantoea genus strains allowed us to further separate the survival determinants into core and non-core genes in the Pantoea pangenome, revealing insights into the survival of subsurface microorganisms during contaminant plume intrusion.

Grape white rot threatens grape production worldwide. To evaluate the resistance and risk of Coniella vitis causing grape white rot in Shandong province to mefentrifluconazole, the sensitivity baseline of C. vitis to mefentrifluconazole was established, and the pathogen's resistance risk was evaluated. Field trials revealed that mefentrifluconazole is one effective fungicide for controlling grape white rot, with the control effect of over 92% at a concentration of 133.33 mg/kg. The EC50 values of 85 strains of C. vitis to mefentrifluconazole ranged from 0.021–10.031 μg/mL, exhibiting a multimodal distribution in their EC50 frequency. However, the EC50 frequency distribution of 71 strains followed a normal distribution within the first peak, with an average EC50 of (0.757 ± 0.412) μg/mL, which could be used as the sensitivity baseline for C. vitis in Shandong province. Resistant strains showed no decline in growth rate, spore production, or pathogenicity. In act, some resistant strains even exhibited superior characteristics. Cross-resistance analysis showed significant correlations between mefentrifluconazole and difenoconazole (r = 0.819) and propiconazole (r = 0.604), but no significant cross-resistance with pyraclostrobin, thiram, mancozeb, carbendazim, imazalil, or tebuconazole. ABSTRACT The stress‐coping ability (SCA) is one of the core aspects of fish welfare and is of vital importance for fish production in the aquaculture industry and for fish fitness in hatchery release. Environmental enrichment (EE), a method of introducing external stimuli into the husbandry environment, has been recently proposed to improve fish SCA, but the present experimental evidence is mixed, and the reasons for these discrepancies are unclear. Here, we conducted a global meta‐analysis using a data set that consists of 1786 cases from 107 studies across 42 fish species to solve this problem. Overall, we found that enriched fish had significantly higher SCA than control fish, reflected in either basal stress levels or stress responses. Meta‐regression analyses showed that specific subgroups of enrichment type, fish developmental stage, stress category, stress duration, stress place, sample tissue and indicator system showed significant positive EE effects on SCA. Multi‐model inference indicated that the indicator system, fish developmental stage, stress characteristic and enrichment mode are important drivers for the high heterogeneity among effect sizes. These results highlight the importance of introducing EE into the rearing systems, which will not only increase the welfare of aquaculture fish but also improve the ecological adaptability of released fish. The comprehensive knowledge obtained in this analysis will provide insights into fish ontogenetic plasticity and its responses to EE and have important implications for improving the production cycle in fish aquaculture and fisheries conservation. In daily fitness activities, posture recognition and motion capture are extremely important. This study aims to explore skeleton-based action recognition technology and compare the effects of using only skeleton information and fused image features. We introduce an improved spatiotemporal pyramid graph convolutional network, which enhances the performance of the model by introducing edge importance scores and multi-level feature representation when dealing with specific action recognition tasks. The proposed model is tested on the UW-IOM and TUM kitchen datasets to verify its applicability in real-world scenarios, the mAP of UW-IOM reached 85.89, achieving the best result and proving the effectiveness of the model. Through experiments, we confirm that in certain cases, the accuracy of skeleton information is the key to improving action recognition performance, while in scenarios where image information is not rich or skeleton information is inaccurate, the fusion of image features can provide performance supplements. Background: The biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) represents a safe and effective alternative to chemical insecticides for mosquito control. Efficient control of mosquitoes implicates continuous and extensive application of Bti. This massive use of Bti imposes strong selective pressure, but the complex mode of action of the numerous synergistic Bti endotoxins lower the risk of the emergence of resistance. Although resistance to Bti has not been identified at the population level in nature, some larvae can survive Bti exposure, suggesting tolerance mechanisms. Here we investigated whether Bti-tolerant Aedes albopictus larvae experience any fitness costs. We also studied how this tolerance affects different aspects of the phenotype of the emerging adults that could be relevant for arboviral transmission. Methods: We exposed Ae. albopictus larvae to lethal concentration of Bti and studied the fitness and gut microbiota of tolerant larvae and their adult counterparts. We further compared the transcript abundance of nine key immunity genes in the gut of Bti-tolerant larvae and their emerging adults versus those not exposed to Bti. Results: Our results showed that Bti exposure has multifaceted impacts on Ae. albopictus mosquitoes during both larval and adult stages. The carry-over effect of Bti exposure on tolerant larvae manifested in reduced adult emergence rate, shorter lifespan, and decreased fecundity. Bti also alters the gut microbiota of both larvae and adults. We observed higher microbial diversity in Bti-tolerant larvae and changes in the richness of core microbiota. Bti infection and the altered microbiota triggered immune responses in the larval and adult guts. Conclusions: The observed reduction in mosquito fitness and changes in the composition of the microbiota of adults emerging from tolerant larvae could negatively influence mosquito vectorial capacity. Introduction: This observational study investigated: (1) potential changes in female football players' in-season training load, intensity and physical performance, and (2) if in-season accumulated training load, intensity, or their progression are associated to changes in physical performance. Methods: Thirty-five national level female players (∼21 years, n = 35) from three top-teams of the Finnish national league participated. Players performed tests at the beginning and at the end of the 27-week in-season. Tests were: 30-m sprint, countermovement jump (CMJ) and 1,200-m shuttle run, used to calculate maximal aerobic speed (MAS). Players' external and internal training load and intensity were monitored in all on-field training sessions and official matches (3,941 data samples) using Polar Team Pro system. Results: Training load decreased towards the end of the in-season (p < 0.05), but intensity remained stable. No changes in physical performance test results occurred from before to after in-season tests at a group level. Change of CMJ correlated negatively with accumulated training load, intensity and progression of total distance (TD) and low-intensity running distance (LIRD) (r = −0.398 to −0.599, p < 0.05). Instead, development of MAS correlated positively with progression of TD and LIRD intensities (r = 0.594 and 0.503, p < 0.05). Development of both CMJ and MAS correlated positively with intensity progression of very-high-intensity running distance (VHIRD) and number of accelerations and decelerations (r = 0.454–0.588, p < 0.05). Discussion: Reduced training load over the in-season is not detrimental for players' physical performance when training intensity progressively increases. Objectives: Refugees may have an increased risk of developing overweight/obesity as they often experience a nutritional transition. Because maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness can help reduce the negative impact of excess weight on overall health, the objective of this study was to examine whether fitness moderates the relationship between weight status and cardiovascular and mental health outcomes in forcibly displaced individuals living in a Greek refugee camp. Methods: A sample of 142 forcibly displaced individuals were recruited. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed with the submaximal Åstrand-Rhyming bicycle ergometer test. Blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose, and hs-CRP were assessed as physical health outcomes, whereas post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety symptoms, pain, and quality of life were assessed as mental health outcomes. Main and interaction effects were tested via analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs). Results: Almost 50% of the participants were overweight/obese, more than 60% presented with very poor fitness levels, and the percentage of participants with very poor fitness levels was particularly high among overweight/obese participants. Whereas overweight/obesity was associated with a less favorable body composition and cardiovascular risk profile, poor fitness was associated with a higher percentage of body fat and a lower percentage of muscle mass. Cardiorespiratory fitness did not moderate the relationship between overweight/obesity and most of the assessed health outcomes. Conclusions: Only limited support was found for the applicability of the fit-but-fat concept to our population of forcibly displaced individuals. Public health services should prioritize measures to prevent overweight/obesity and associated diseases in refugee camps. Cooperative foraging behavior can be advantageous when there is a common exploitable resource. By cooperating, members of the group can take advantage of the potential of increased efficiency of working together as well as equitable distribution of the product. An experimental signature of cooperative foraging is an Allee effect where at a certain number of individuals, there is a peak of fitness. What happens when there are intruders especially ones that do not contribute to any work required for foraging? Drosophila larvae secrete digestive enzymes and exodigest food. Under crowded conditions in liquid food these larvae form synchronized feeding clusters which provides a fitness benefit. A key for this synchronized feeding behavior is the visually guided alignment between adjacent larvae in a feeding cluster. Larvae who do not align their movements are excluded from the groups and subsequently lose the benefit. This may be a way of editing the group to include only known members. To test the model, the fitness benefit from cooperative behavior was further investigated to establish an Allee effect for a number of strains including those who cannot exodigest or cluster. In a standard lab vial, about 40 larvae is the optimal number for fitness. Combinations of these larvae were also examined. The expectation was that larvae who do not contribute to exodigestion are obligate cheaters and would be expelled. Indeed, obligate cheaters gain greatly from the hosts but paradoxically, so do the hosts. Clusters that include cheaters are more stable. Therefore, clustering and the benefits from it are dependent on more than just the contribution to exodigestion. Background/Objectives: This study examined the effects of an intervention on anthropometrics, body composition, physical fitness, and sleep quality in aged individuals, comparing a control group (N = 11) and an experimental group (N = 13) across two measurement points. Methods: A multicomponent training program of 8 months was adopted as the intervention group. A bioimpedance balance, functional fitness test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index measured body composition, functional fitness, and sleep quality. Results: Both groups showed minimal changes in body mass and hand grip strength. However, the experimental group experienced significant improvements in physical fitness, including a 26% increase in arm curl repetitions, an 18% reduction in 5 times sit-to-stand (5TSTS) completion time, and a 29% rise in 2-min step test (2MST) steps, indicating enhanced muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness. Flexibility decreased significantly in the experimental group, while body fat percentage was reduced by 10%. Sleep quality improved by 47% in the experimental group but declined by 14% in the control group. Correlational analysis revealed that better sleep quality was linked to improved fitness performance and reduced body fat in the experimental group, with post-intervention results further confirming the connection between sleep and fat reduction. In the control group, improved sleep quality was associated with higher metabolic rates after 8 months. Assessing the suitability of older adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for intensive chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation remains a long-standing challenge. Geriatric assessment, which involves the evaluation of multiple dimensions of health, may influence a patient's ability to tolerate intensive or mild-intensity approaches, including treatment-related mortality. Prospective studies are required to validate different fitness criteria, in addition to making it possible to compare the effectiveness of geriatric assessment-based fitness against other criteria, in order to identify which aspects of geriatric assessment are linked to treatment tolerance. It is hoped that validation studies will include different groups of patients receiving either intensive or lower-intensity chemotherapy. At a minimum, geriatric assessment should involve the measurement of the comorbidity burden, cognition, physical function, and emotional health—factors previously associated with mortality in AML. These assessments should be conducted before starting chemotherapy in order to minimize the treatment's impact on the results. While treatment tolerance has traditionally been evaluated through toxicity rates in solid tumor patients, AML treatment often results in high toxicity rates regardless of the intensity. Therefore, early mortality should be the primary endpoint for assessing treatment tolerance, given its significant and clear implications. Other important endpoints might include declines in functional status and quality of life and treatment adjustments or discontinuation due to toxicity. Validating these fitness criteria is essential for guiding treatment choices, improving supportive care, determining trial eligibility, interpreting study outcomes, and informing drug labeling. Background: Little is known about the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)‐cardiometabolic risk relationship in Latin American pediatric populations across different age/sex groups, especially when considering the potential effects of adiposity on the association. We evaluated cross‐sectional associations between VO2max and cardiometabolic risk variables (CMRV), and verified whether the associations were independent of adiposity markers in school‐aged children and adolescents from Cali, Colombia. Methods: The sample consisted of 1206 children aged 5–17 years. CMRV were fasting glucose, HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic, and diastolic pressure. Logistic regressions were conducted for associations of age/sex‐specific tertiles of VO2max with age/sex‐specific highest tertiles of CMRV (except HDL‐C, lowest tertile) and a CMR cluster (> 2 CMRV in extreme tertiles), adjusting for socioeconomic stratum, and adiposity markers (BMI, body fat percentage, and waist circumference). Results: Overweight/obesity ranged from 15% to 18% with no difference by sex. In children aged 5–11 years, high VO2max (highest tertile vs. lowest) was inversely associated with the CMR cluster [Odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.18 (0.06–0.47), p < 0.05] independently of adjustment for any adiposity marker in boys but not in girls. In the age group of 12–17 years, there were initially significant VO2max‐ CMR cluster and VO2max‐ CMRV associations but attenuated by adiposity adjustment. In girls, high VO2max was inversely associated with high systolic blood pressure regardless of adjustment for adiposity markers. Conclusion: VO2max is inversely associated with cardiometabolic risk, but adiposity influences the association. The adiposity‐independent association among younger boys requires further research. Social environments impose a number of constraints on individuals' behavior. These constraints have been hypothesized to generate behavioral variation among individuals, social responsiveness, and within-individual behavioral consistency (also termed "predictability"). In particular, the social niche specialization hypothesis posits that higher levels of competition associated with higher population density should increase among-individual behavioral variation and individual predictability as a way to reduce conflicts. Being predictable should hence have fitness benefits in group-living animals. However, to date empirical studies of the fitness consequences of behavioral predictability remain scarce. In this study, we investigated the associations between social behavior, its predictability, and fitness in the eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii), a wild gregarious lizard. Since this species is sexually dimorphic, we examined these patterns both between sexes and among individuals. Although females were more sociable than males, there was no evidence for sex differences in among-individual variation or predictability. However, females exhibited positive associations between social behavior, its predictability, and survival, while males exhibited only a positive association between mean social behavior and fitness. ABSTRACT Fishes inhabiting the mesopelagic zone of the world's oceans are estimated to account for the majority of the world's fish biomass. They have recently attracted new attention because they are part of the biological carbon pump and have been reconsidered as a contribution to food security. Hence, there is an urgent need to understand how environmental conditions and species interactions shape their assemblages, and how they contribute to the functioning of marine ecosystems. Trait‐based approaches are valuable for addressing these types of questions. However, the biology and ecology of mesopelagic fishes are understudied compared to fishes in shallow and epipelagic waters. Here, we synthesise existing knowledge of traits of mesopelagic fishes and relate them to their role in survival, feeding and growth and reproduction, the key functions that contribute to fitness. Vertical migrations, specialised vision and the use of bioluminescence are among the most striking adaptations to the conditions in the mesopelagic realm. Many traits are interrelated as a result of trade‐offs, which may help to understand selection pressures. While morphological traits are straightforward to observe, major knowledge gaps exist for traits that require frequent sampling, assessment under experimental conditions or age determination. The unique adaptations of mesopelagic fishes need to be included in management strategies as well as fundamental research of the habitat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Platelets are key mediators in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a risk factor for CVD. The purpose of our study was to assess if CRF associates with platelet function. Methods: Platelet assays and cardiopulmonary exercise testing were conducted in the Framingham Heart Study (N = 3014). Linear mixed effects models estimated associations between CRF (assessed by peak oxygen uptake [V̇O2]) and multiple platelet reactivity assays. Models were adjusted for multiple medications, risk factors, relatedness, and prevalent CVD. Results: Nineteen associations passed the significance threshold in the fully adjusted models, all indicating higher CRF associated with decreased platelet reactivity. Significant traits spanned multiple platelet agonists. Strongest associations were observed in multiplate whole blood testing after TRAP-6 (e.g., velocity, beta = -0.563, 95% CI = -0.735 to -0.391, P = 1.38E-10), ADP (e.g., velocity, beta = -0.514, 95% CI = -0.681 to -0348, P = 1.41E-09), collagen (e.g., velocity, beta = -0.387, 95% CI = -0.549 to -0.224, P = 3.01E-06), ristocetin (e.g., AUC, beta = -0.365, 95% CI = -0.522 to -0.208, P = 5.17E-06) and arachidonic acid stimulation of platelets (e.g., velocity, beta = -0.298, 95% CI = -0.435 to -0.162, P = 3.39E-04), and light transmission aggregometry (LTA) after ristocetin stimulation (e.g., max aggregation, beta = -0.362, 95% CI = -0.540 to -0.184, P = 6.64E-05). One trait passed significance threshold in the aspirin subsample (LTA ristocetin primary slope, beta = -0.733, 95% CI = -1.134 to -0.333, P = 3.30E-04) and another in a model including von Willebrand Factor levels as a covariate (U46619, a thromboxane receptor mimetic, AUC in the Optimul assay, beta = -0.36, 95% CI = -0.551 to -0.168, P = 2.35E-04). No strong interactions were observed between the associations and sex, age, or body mass index in formal interaction analyses. Conclusions: Our findings build on past work that shows CRF to be associated with reduced CVD by suggesting decreased platelet reactivity may play a mechanistic role. We found significant associations with multiple platelet agonists, indicating higher CRF may globally inhibit platelets; however, given multiple strong associations after TRAP-6 and ADP stimulation, PAR-1 and purinergic signaling may be most heavily involved. ABSTRACT The vertebrate gut microbiota is a critical determinant of organismal function, yet whether and how gut microbial communities affect host fitness under natural conditions remains largely unclear. We characterised associations between a fitness proxy—individual growth rate—and bacterial gut microbiota diversity and composition in threespine stickleback fish introduced to large semi‐natural ponds. We detected a 63% higher richness of bacterial taxa (α‐diversity) in the guts of high‐fitness fish compared to low‐fitness fish, which might be driven by stronger bacterial dispersal among high‐fitness fish according to the fit of a neutral community model. Further, microbial communities of high‐fitness fish were more similar to one another (i.e., exhibited lower β‐diversity) than those of low‐fitness fish. The lower β‐diversity found to be associated with higher host fitness is consistent with the Anna Karenina principle—that there are fewer ways to have a functional microbiota than a dysfunctional microbiota. Our study links differences in α‐ and β‐diversity to a fitness‐related trait in a vertebrate species reared under naturalistic conditions and our findings provide a basis for functional tests of the fitness consequences of host‐microbiota interactions. Predator–prey interactions are crucial components of populations and communities. Their dynamics depend on the covariation of traits of the interacting organisms, and there is increasing evidence that intraspecific trade‐off relationships between defense and competitive traits are important drivers of trophic interactions. However, quantifying the relevant traits forming defense–competitiveness trade‐offs and how these traits determine prey and predator fitness remains a major challenge. Here, we conducted feeding and growth experiments to assess multiple traits related to defense and competitiveness in six different strains of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii exposed to predation by the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. We found large differences in defense and competitive traits among prey strains and negative relationships between these traits for multiple trait combinations. Because we compared trait differences among strains whose ancestors evolved previously in controlled environments where selection favored either defense or competitiveness, these negative correlations suggest the presence of a trade‐off between defense and competitiveness. These differences in traits and trade‐offs translated into differences in prey and predator fitness, demonstrating the importance of intraspecific trade‐offs in predicting the outcome of predator–prey interactions. Cellular senescence leads to the functional decline of regenerative cells such as mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs), which gives rise to chronic conditions and contributes to poor cell therapy outcomes. Aging tissues are associated with extracellular matrix (ECM) dysregulation, including loss of elastin. However, the role of the ECM in modulating senescence is underexplored. In this work, it is shown that tropoelastin, the soluble elastin precursor, is not only a marker of young MSCs but also actively preserves cell fitness and delays senescence during replicative aging. MSCs briefly exposed to tropoelastin exhibit upregulation of proliferative genes and concurrent downregulation of senescence genes. The seno‐protective benefits of tropoelastin persist during continuous, long‐term MSC culture, and significantly extend the MSC replicative lifespan. Tropoelastin‐expanded MSCs further maintain youth‐associated phenotype and function compared to age‐matched controls, including preserved clonogenic potential, minimal senescence‐associated beta‐galactosidase activity, maintained cell sizes, reduced expression of senescence markers, suppressed secretion of senescence‐associated factors, and increased production of youth‐associated proteins. This work points to the utility of exogenously‐supplemented tropoelastin for manufacturing MSCs that robustly maintain regenerative potential with age. It further reveals the active role of classical structural ECM proteins in driving cellular age‐associated fitness, potentially leading to future interventions for aging‐related pathologies. Empirical studies from laboratory systems and humans show that the gut microbiota is linked to host health. Similar evidence for effects on traits linked to fitness in nature is rare, not least because experimentally manipulating the gut microbiota is challenging. We isolated, characterized, and cultured a bacterial strain, Lactobacillus kimchicus APC4233, directly from a wild bird (the great tit Parus major) and provided it as a self-administered dietary supplement. We assessed the impact of the treatment on the host microbiota community, on weight, and tested whether the treatment affected a previous result linking microbiota alpha diversity to weight in nestlings. The treatment dramatically increased L. kimchicus abundance in the gut microbiota and increased alpha diversity. This effect was strongest in the youngest birds, validating earlier findings pointing to a brief developmental window when the gut microbiota are most sensitive. In time-lagged models, nestling weight was higher in the treatment birds suggesting L. kimchicus may have probiotic potential. There was also a positive time-lagged relationship between diversity and weight in control birds but not in the treatment birds, suggesting L. kimchicus helped birds compensate for low alpha diversity. We discuss why ecological context is likely key when predicting impacts of the microbiome. The manipulation of the gut microbiota with a host native strain in this wild population provides direct evidence for the role of the microbiota in the ecology and evolution of natural populations. This study analysed the relationship between the structured and unstructured activities of preschoolers and their mental and physical health, and also investigated the predicted changes in mental and physical health by reallocating activity time. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 324 preschoolers. Video recording and SOPARC activity observation system was used for the division of structured and unstructured activities. An accelerometer sensor was used to measure activity intensity. The SDQ psychological questionnaire was adopted to collect data on internalizing difficulties, externalizing difficulties, total difficulties and pro-social behaviours. Physical indices including body shape (height, weight, BMI), and physical fitness (upper and lower limb strength, flexibility, agility, and balance) were collected using Chinese toddler physical fitness measurement tools. Component data and isotemporal reallocation analyses were conducted using R Studio (Version 4.2). A total of 308 preschoolers (160 boys; aged 4.50 ± 0.93 years) were included in the data analysis. The activities composition, adjusted for sex, area, mental level (for mental indicators), or age (for physical indicators), was significantly correlated with various measurement indicators (p < 0.05). Specifically, structured (β=-0.87, p < 0.05) and unstructured (β=-1.24, p < 0.05) moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were significantly positive correlated with internalizing difficulties, while structured MVPA was significantly positively correlated with body shape (β = 2.17, p < 0.05). Replacing structured light physical activity (LPA) with 10 min of structured MVPA has a positive effect on internalizing difficulties (SMD=-1.28, 95%CI: -2.30 to -0.27) and body shape (SMD = 1.76, 95%CI: 0.37 to 3.15). When the total replacement time reaches 25 min, the benefits become even more pronounced. Structured and unstructured MVPA are both beneficial to preschoolers' mental and physical health, with the incorporation of MVPA for over 25 min in structured activities and supplementary unstructured MVPA yielding even greater benefits. Over time, the fitness industry has expanded its engagement on social media, with Instagram becoming a prominent marketing tool. This study aims to examine the gender representations in the content shared by fitness centres on Instagram under the hashtag #Yoentrenoencasa (#IWorkoutAtHome). A thematic analysis of the visual content and linguistic messages of the fitness advertisements of this community was conducted, revealing the perpetuation of gender stereotypes linked to sport and the reinforcement of sexist roles, with women depicted in decorative roles compared to the professional roles of men. Unpredictably fluctuating environments create complex selective landscapes that shape the distribution of key life history traits. Identifying the mechanisms behind dynamic patterns of selection is difficult, yet essential for predicting responses to climate change. We combine long-term measures with field manipulation of natural selection on breeding date in a wild bird to investigate whether highly variable spring cold snaps drive fluctuating selection. We show that variation in cold snap intensity leads to fluctuating selection on breeding date—in weak cold snap years, selection was consistently negative; however, in strong cold snap years, its direction reversed. These patterns were mirrored in a field experiment; nests that were food supplemented during cold snaps avoided cold snap mortality leading earlier breeders to have higher fitness. In contrast, in the non-supplemented group earlier breeders had higher cold snap nest mortality and selection was positive. Using nearly a century of climate data, we show that cold snaps are becoming less frequent and paradoxically occurring later which should allow earlier breeders to avoid them, potentially releasing conflicting selection pressures and facilitating a rapid phenological shift. Thus, rather than constraining a species' ability to adapt, climate change can enable a rapid shift to a new phenotypic optimum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The commercial utilization of genetically modified soybeans has yielded substantial economic advantages. Nevertheless, the genetic drift towards wild soybeans is one of the main ecological risks that needs to be addressed. Previous experiments demonstrated the absence of fitness cost or florescence overlap in hybrid offspring resulting from the crossbreeding of transgenic soybean GTS40-3-2 and Zhengzhou wild soybeans. In this study, hybrid progeny was systematically crossed with wild soybeans to establish a backcross progeny system. This system was employed to evaluate the ecological risk associated with the backcross progeny of transgenic and wild soybeans. Results: The findings indicated that the offspring from the backcross exhibited glyphosate tolerance. Furthermore, the expression of foreign proteins in the backcross offspring was notably lower than in the transgenic soybean, and there was no significant difference when compared to the hybrid progeny. Parameters such as germination rate, aboveground biomass, pods per plant, full seeds per plant, and 100-grain weight exhibited no significant differences between the negative and positive lines of the backcross progenies, and no fitness cost was identified in comparison to wild soybeans. These results underscore the potential for foreign genes to propagate within other wild soybeans, which requires continuous attention. Conclusions: The widespread adoption of genetically modified soybeans has undeniably led to substantial economic gains. However, the research findings emphasize the critical importance of addressing the ecological risks posed by genetic drift towards wild soybeans. The backcross progeny system established in this study indicates that the potential for foreign gene dissemination to wild soybean populations warrants continued attention and mitigation strategies. Purpose: This study estimated an individual’s genetic liability to cardiometabolic risk factors by polygenic risk score (PRS) construction and examined whether high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) modifies the association between PRS and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 1296 Japanese adults aged ≥40 yr. The PRS for each cardiometabolic trait (blood lipids, glucose, hypertension, and obesity) was calculated using the LDpred2 and clumping and thresholding methods. Participants were divided into low-, intermediate-, and high-PRS groups according to PRS tertiles for each trait. CRF was quantified as peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) per kilogram body weight. Participants were divided into low-, intermediate-, and high-CRF groups according to the tertile V̇O 2peak value. Results: Linear regression analysis revealed a significant interaction between PRS for triglyceride (PRSTG) and CRF groups on serum TG levels regardless of the PRS calculation method, and the association between PRSTG and TG levels was attenuated in the high-CRF group. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant sub-additive interaction between LDpred2 PRSTG and CRF on the prevalence of high TG, indicating that high CRF attenuated the genetic predisposition to high TG. Furthermore, a significant sub-additive interaction between PRS for body mass index and CRF on obesity was detected regardless of the PRS calculation method. These significant interaction effects on high TG and obesity were diminished in the sensitivity analysis using V̇O2peak per kilogram fat-free mass as the CRF index. Epigenetic processes, specifically DNA methylation, have been shown to affect crop species and arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), but their role in trees remains enigmatic. Evidence from arabidopsis and crop species reveals that DNA methylation targets highly repeated genomic regions. Naturally occurring tree genomes are large and repeat-rich, and methylation in some contexts appears to target repeats and transposable elements. Recent findings in a few tree species show phenotypic change following DNA methylation of promoter regions upstream of genes. This suggests that, as in crop plants, some types of DNA methylation can induce phenotypic changes, including changes in climate-relevant traits. Understanding the extent to which ecological traits can be manipulated provides a promising research avenue in conservation genomics and restoration ecology of natural tree populations as well as in commercial forest management. Woody plants create the ecosystems they occupy and shape their biodiversity. Today's rapidly warming climate threatens these long-lived species by creating new environments in which existing populations become maladapted. Plants show enormous phenotypic diversity in response to environmental change, which can be caused by genotype or epigenetic mechanisms that influence the expression of the underlying DNA sequence. Whether epigenetics can affect ecologically important traits in trees is an important and controversial question. We explore the evidence that DNA methylation can affect gene expression, both directly and indirectly via its interaction with transposable elements (TEs), and subsequently shapes phenotypic variation in natural tree populations. During the past few decades, fitness-centered and trait-centered definitions of natural selection have coexisted in the philosophical literature. The former render natural selection definitionally dependent on the presence of fitness differences, where “fitness” is understood as a distinct property from actual reproductive success. On the other hand, trait-centered definitions see selection as definitionally dependent on the presence of a causal relation between a trait (not necessarily fitness) and reproductive success. Interestingly, endorsers of these definitions have rarely–and usually only cursorily–critically engaged the views of the other camp. Therefore, a critical comparison of the two kinds of definitions is lacking in the literature. This paper starts filling this void by opening a discussion about which of the two kinds of definition is more appropriate. I first argue that fitness-centered definitions have difficulties in accommodating cases of opposing selection on correlated traits, whereas trait-centered views have no such problems. To do so, I revisit an old argument put forth by Elliott Sober and I show that recent attempts from the fitness-centered camp to reply to Sober’s charge are unsuccessful. I then show that fitness-centered views also have problems with a different type of case, namely opposing selection on a single trait; trait-centered views, on the other hand, may accommodate such cases if, as I propose here, we specify that the causal relation that figures prominently in them is understood as a relation of contributing causation. Objective: This study examined relationships between physical fitness, health behaviors, and occupational outcomes of university affiliates. Participants: 166 university affiliates of an American university (including students, faculty, and staff) participated between October 2018 and March 2020. Methods: Participants completed fitness measurements, wore a device to measure physical activity (PA) and sleep for one week, and completed a survey evaluating happiness and job satisfaction. Multiple regression models evaluated associations between physical fitness, health behaviors, and occupational outcomes. Results: 45% of participants had "poor" cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and unhealthy % fat. CRF, body composition, and muscular endurance were related to PA while body composition was related to sleep duration. Muscular endurance was related to GPA and job satisfaction. Conclusions: Findings suggest 45% of university affiliates had deficient physical fitness and may benefit from increasing PA and sleep. Universities should evaluate fitness within holistic programs to improve affiliates' health and, ultimately, occupational success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of three coping strategies (i.e. active, expressive, and denial coping) in the relationships between service failures (i.e. high- and low-contact service failures) and negative behavioral intentions (i.e. switching intention). Design/methodology/approach: The critical incident technique (CIT) was used to identify the conceptually categorized service failure types in the fitness industry, and then confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were performed to examine the mediating effect of coping strategies among high-contact service failure and switching intention (study 1) and the mediating effect of coping strategies among low-contact service failure and switching intention (study 2). Findings: While the mediating effect of coping strategies was significant in the relationship between high-contact service failures (study 1) and negative behaviors (i.e. switching intention and complaints), it was not significant in the relationship between low-contact service failures (study 2) and switching intention. Out of the three coping strategies, the impact of active coping was significant. Originality/value: This study extends the understanding of the mediating effect of coping strategies in the relation between high- and low-contact service failures and switching intention. Phenology models are widely used in Decision Support Systems to predict the phenology of pests. Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a polyphagous pest, has a high prevalence in apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh.) (Rosales: Rosaceae) in certain areas, despite the fact that apple trees are considered secondary hosts. Its natural behavior of feeding inside plant tissue at the larval stage makes monitoring and planning methods of control critical for Integrated Pest Management. The development times and survival rates of two field populations of G. molesta larvae on apple cultivars 'Gala', 'Golden', and 'Fuji' were determined under different temperature (constant versus field fluctuation) and feeding conditions (diet versus apples attached to the tree and detached from the tree). The results showed that G. molesta fitness in apples is affected by fluctuating temperature regimes in the field, the condition of the fruit, whether or not the fruit is attached to the tree, and the cultivar. The temperature was the main cause of the differences in the studied parameters. Larvae developme–nt time was delayed due to fluctuating field temperatures. Larvae had a shorter development time in fruits detached from the tree compared to attached fruits, and apple cultivars influenced development time in both laboratory and field conditions, with the 'Golden' cultivar having better fitness and a higher rate of larvae survival in the fruits attached to the tree. These factors need to be considered to properly adjust the phenology models and improve the Integrated Pest Management system of apples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a major health burden in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). While cardiorespiratory fitness, race, and sex are known to influence the relationship between CVD and mortality in the absence of kidney disease, their roles in patients with CKD remain less clear. Therefore, this narrative review aims to synthesize the existing data on CVD in CKD patients with a specific emphasis on cardiorespiratory fitness, race, and sex. It highlights that both traditional and non-traditional risk factors contribute to CVD development in this population. Additionally, biological, social, and cultural determinants of health contribute to racial disparities and sex differences in CVD outcomes in patients with CKD. Although cardiorespiratory fitness levels also differ by race and sex, their influence on CVD and cardiovascular mortality is consistent across these groups. Furthermore, exercise has been shown to improve cardiorespiratory fitness in CKD patients regardless of race or sex. However, the specific effects of exercise on CVD risk factors in CKD patients, particularly across different races and sexes remains poorly understood and represent a critical area for future research. Background/Objectives: Animal models can help understand human physiological responses, including the response to exercise and physical activity. However, many of these models incorporate noxious stimuli for various scientific purposes. We propose a noxious stimuli-free treadmill running training program for Rattus norvegicus species to study adaptations to aerobic exercise. Methods: In this study, rats were randomly allocated to training (n = 20) and sedentary (n = 20) groups. The training group underwent a program consisting of 30–50 min of treadmill running at 60% intensity, three times per week for 8 weeks. Maximum speed tasks (Tmax) were conducted to determine, adjust, and evaluate changes in fitness conditions. The rats had one week of familiarization with the treadmill, and a rubber ball was used at the back wall of the lane as a painless stimulus to encourage running. All assessments were conducted by two independent researchers in a double-blind manner, with data analysis conducted by a third-blind investigator. Results: A significant effect of time (η2p = 0.430, p < 0.001, large effect) could be found, showing differences between Tmax1 and Tmax2, and between Tmax1 and Tmax3 in both groups. The training group significantly outperformed the sedentary group (η2p = 0.266, p < 0.001, large effect). There was a significant interaction between time and condition (η2p = 0.152, p < 0.001, large effect). Conclusions: The proposed moderate-intensity treadmill running program could effectively differentiate between trained and sedentary conditions within both the short period of 4 weeks and the extended period of 8 weeks. BACKGROUND: The complex interaction between plant viruses and their insect vectors is the basis for the epidemiology of plant viruses. The 'Vector Manipulation Hypothesis' (VMH) was proposed to demonstrate the evolution of strategies in plant viruses to enhance their transmission to new hosts through direct effects on insect vector behavior and/or physiology. However, the aphid vectors used in previous studies were mostly obtained by feeding on virus‐infected plants and as a result, it was difficult to eliminate the confounding effects of infected host plants. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the direct effects of plant viruses on insect vectors have rarely been examined comprehensively. RESULTS: We fed Sitobion avenae on an artificial diet infused with a purified suspension of Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) PAV strain to obtain viruliferous aphids. We then examined their growth and reproduction performance, resistance to the parasitoid Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead, and feeding behavior. The results indicate that (1) viruliferous aphids had a shorter life span and a lower relative growth rate at the nymphal stage; (2) A. gifuensis had a lower parasitism rate, mummification rate, and emergence rate in viruliferous aphids; (3) Viruliferous aphids spent more time on non‐probing and salivation behavior and had a shorter total duration of penetration and ingestion compared with healthy conspecifics. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that plant virus infection may directly alter vector fitness and behavior that improves plant virus transmission, but not vector growth. Background: The impact of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on cognition is thought to be mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Aerobic exercise can increase CRF through various activities, including sports participation. The relationship between these factors in females has yet to be elucidated. Objective: This review aims to map the current literature on the effects of aerobic exercise, sports participation, and CRF in healthy adult females, with sub-topics of pregnancy and menstrual cycle periodicity. Methods: A scoping review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and the PCC mnemonic (population, concept, and context). The following five databases were screened: CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus. Eligible articles included healthy adult females, investigated aerobic exercise, sports participation or CRF, and linked outcomes to cognition. Data from included manuscripts was extracted and analyzed. Two sub-population groupings (pregnant individuals and menstrual cycle) were established to further aid the interpretation of the findings. Results: Of the 300 titles and abstracts screened, 74 were eligible for full-text screening, and 28 were included in the scoping review. Of the 28 included, 14 did not control for or report on menstrual cycle phase or sex hormones. Conclusion: This scoping review found an inverse 'U' relationship between aerobic exercise and cognition, demonstrating an optimal dose of aerobic exercise to benefit cognitive functions. As estrogen may impact the relationship between CRF and neural growth factors, more research is needed on this pathway, independent of the menstrual cycle, to determine potential beneficial effects. It is currently unknown whether sports participation can independently impact cognition. Key Points: Regular sports participation enhances executive functions, brain activation, and BDNF levels. ABSTRACT Nest defence is one component of parental investment by which individuals can increase the survival of their offspring. Aggressive behaviours and the time spent protecting nests are determining factors in the reproductive success of cichlid species. The Mexican mojarra is the only cichlid native to the Balsas River Basin in Mexico. At least four invasive cichlids have been introduced, including the convict cichlid and the spotcheek cichlid. These three species establish their nests in the River and defend them aggressively. We quantified the number of nests, aggressive behaviours and time spent in the nest by parents of the native species and these two invasive species. We expected that the invasive parents would be more aggressive during defence, spent more time protecting the eggs, and would have a higher density of nests. We also explored differences in nest defence between the sexes within each species. We found that invasive cichlids had a greater number of nests than the Mexican mojarra. In the two invasive species, there was no difference between males and females in the time spent in the nest or the number of aggressive behaviours. In contrast, male Mexican mojarras spent less time in the nest and performed fewer aggressive behaviours than their mates. The smaller number of nests and nest defence behaviour of this native species could compromise its reproductive success and population size. This differential nest defence between the Mexican mojarra and the invasive cichlids could have negative implications for the physiology, reproduction, and health of this native cichlid. Aim: the present study aimed to investigate the effect of fartlek training (Gerschler Fartlek) on fitness variables including cardiorespiratory fitness, speed, reaction time, agility, power strength of the leg muscles, strength endurance of the arm muscles, and strength endurance of the trunk muscles in football players. In addition, the investigation included the impact of the Gerschler Fartlek training method on some physiological variables including maximum oxygen consumption vital capacity, and heart rate in football players. Method: an experimental method was used including pre- and post-measurement design in two groups (experimental and control). The study sample consisted of 20 football players (10 players in each group). The Gerschler-Fartlek training method was performed in the experimental group and the regular training method was performed in the control group. Both groups completed total of weeks, with a total of training units (٤ units per week, 90-120 min per unit). Results: both groups showed a significant improvement in the post- measurements of both types of variables (physical fitness and physiological variables). Moreover, the experimental group reported a significant improvement in the post-measurement compared to the control groups in both physical fitness and physiological variables. Conclusion: using the Gerschler-Fartlek training method for A weeks (۳۲training units per week) may improve physical performance and physiological capabilities more compared to regular training in football players. Introduction: Major depressive disorders (MDD) are a leading health concern worldwide. While first line medication treatments may fall short of desired therapeutic outcomes, physical activity (PA) interventions appear to be a promising and cost-effective add-on to improve symptoms of depression. This study aimed to address challenges in the assessment of PA in inpatients treated for MDD by examining the correspondence of self-reported and accelerometer-based PA. Methods: In 178 inpatients treated for MDD (mean age:M= 41.11 years, SD = 12.84; 45.5% female) and 97 non-depressed controls (mean age: M= 35.24 years, SD = 13.40; 36.1% female), we assessed self-reported PA via the Simple Physical Activity Questionnaire (SIMPAQ) for one week, followed by a week where PA was monitored using an accelerometer device (Actigraph wGT3x-BT). Additionally, we examined correlations between PA levels assessed with the SIMPAQ and exercise determinants in both groups. Results: Descriptively, inpatients treated for MDD showed lower levels of light PA on accelerometer-based measures, whereas they self-reported increased levels of certain types of PA on the SIMPAQ. More importantly, there was only a small degree of correspondence between self-reported and actigraphy-based PA levels in both in patients (r = 0.15, p < 0.05) and controls (r = 0.03, ns). Only few significant correlations were found for self-reported PA (SIMPAQ subscores) and perceived fitness, whereas self-reported PA and estimated VO2max were unrelated. Furthermore, only weak (and mostly statistically non-significant) correlations were found between exercise determinants and SIMPAQ-based exercise behavior in both populations. Discussion: Our findings emphasize the intricate challenges in the assessment of PA, not only in inpatients treated for MDD, but also in non-depressed controls. Our findings also underline the necessity for a diversified data assessment. Mosquitoes transmit viruses that affect public health in tropical regions. Identifying factors that influence their fitness can help control mosquito-borne diseases. We investigated the impacts of predation risk effects, from a fish predator, and food availability on the oviposition behavior of Aedes aegypti. We hypothesize that predation risk and food availability interactively affect Ae. aegypti oviposition. Gravid Ae. aegypti females were offered oviposition sites with all possible combinations of predation risk (with vs. without predator cues) and food availability (low vs. high). We found a significant interaction between predation risk and food availability. The magnitude of oviposition and the probability of egg laying in high food availability treatments exceeded the values of low food availability treatments, but only in treatments without predation risk. Predation risk critically modulated the effects of food availability on the oviposition of Ae. aegypti. This study demonstrates the interplay between predation risk and food availability in controlling mosquito-borne diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
