Construction of artificial reefs called fish apartments is done as a replacement for natural coral reefs and rehabilitates damaged habitats to increase diversity and fish populations in areas that have been severely damaged. As one of the methods used to improve fish communities and reef habitats, a study was conducted to examine the effect of fish apartments on the development of fish communities in fish apartment locations. This research was carried out before and after six months, and the fish apartment was drowned in Tangah Island waters, Kota Pariaman, West Sumatra. Observations were made monthly for seven months from July 2015 – January 2016 at the location of the fish apartment. Observations abundance and diversity of fish are done using a visual census approach. The observation results before the fish apartment found seven species of fish, as many as eight individuals. After installing the fish apartment and observation for six months, found 63 fish species, as many as 6113 individuals. Based on the results obtained from observations, there was an increase and change in the composition of fish in the fish apartment location. It shows that the initial process of succession of the fish community is underway at the site of the fish apartment, so the existence of the fish apartment is influential in forming a new microhabitat for fish and other marine biotas.
