Measurements of the microwave surface impedance $Z_s(T)=R_s(T)+iX_s(T)$ and of the complex conductivity $\sigma_s(T)$ of high-quality, high-$T_c$ single crystals of YBCO, BSCCO, TBCCO, and TBCO are analyzed. Experimental data of $Z_s(T)$ and $\sigma_s(T)$ are compared with calculations based on a modified two-fluid model which includes temperature-dependent quasiparticle scattering and a unique temperature variation of the density of superconducting carriers. We elucidate agreement as well as disagreement of our analysis with the salient features of the experimental data. Existing microscopic models are reviewed which are based on unconventional symmetry types of the order parameter and on novel mechanisms of quasiparticle relaxation., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, 1 table

We present results of an infrared-to-X-ray study of 76 bright soft X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies discovered in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. These objects are characterized by steep X-ray spectra in the 0.2-2.0 keV bandpass with power law energy spectral indices in the range of 1.3 to 8 and a lack of internal absorption by neutral hydrogen. Our sample selection based on hardness ratio yields a mean X-ray slope of alpha-X = 2.1, steeper than in any other known AGN population. At optical wavelengths, the soft AGN have significantly bluer spectra than a comparison sample of AGN with a canonical, harder X-ray spectrum, whereas the slope between 5500 Angstrom and 1 keV is the same. This is consistent with a more pronounced Big Blue Bump emission component in the soft X-ray selected AGN. The blueness of the optical spectra increases with the softness of the X-ray spectra and with the luminosity, saturating at an approximate F_nu proportional to nu^+0.3 spectrum. Such properties are expected if most of the Big Blue Bump emission originates in a (comptonized) accretion disk and accretion rate to mass ratio is higher than in AGN with a hard X-ray spectrum., Comment: 13 pages, including 7 fugures and 4 tables, to appear in A&A

We report evidence for persistent giant and rapid X-ray variability in the radio-quiet, ultrasoft, strong Fe II, narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224-3809. Within a 30 day ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) monitoring observation at least five giant amplitude count rate variations are visible, with the maximum observed amplitude of variability being about a factor of 60. We detect a rise by a factor of about 57 in just two days. IRAS 13224-3809 appears to be the most X-ray variable Seyfert known, and its variability is probably nonlinear. We carefully check the identification of the highly variable X-ray source with the distant galaxy, and it appears to be secure. We examine possible explanations for the giant variability. Unusually strong relativistic effects and partial covering by occulting structures on an accretion disc can provide plausible explanations of the X-ray data, and we explore these two scenarios. Blazars with redshifts z<0.1 are likely candidates for detection at energies in the range 300 GeV - 50 TeV with Cerenkov telescopes and scintillator arrays. We present gamma-ray flux predictions for a sample of 15 nearby flat-spectrum radio sources fitting the proton blazar model of Mannheim (1993a) to their observed broad-band spectral energy distributions. At high energies, we use fluxes or flux limits measured by ROSAT, CGRO and the Whipple Observatory to constrain their spectra. We take into account absorption of the gamma-rays by pair production with low energy photons of the diffuse infrared-to-optical photon background produced by galaxies (cosmic absorption) and with low energy synchrotron photons of the blazar radiation field (internal absorption). Typically, the theoretical spectra decrease much faster above TeV (photon index s~3) than between GeV and TeV (s~2) owing to internal absorption. The predicted fluxes are confronted with flux limits in the 20-50 TeV energy range obtained by the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) experiment. Without cosmic absorption, the fluxes are about equal to the current sensitivity of HEGRA. Improved gamma/hadron separation techniques could render a detection by HEGRA possible, if cosmic absorption by the far-infrared background at wavelengths ~100 mu is not exceedingly strong., Comment: 9 pages latex, postscript figures included; A&A

We report some remarkable and unexpected results of optical/UV/X-ray follow-up observations of bright soft X-ray selected AGN from the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey. The majority of these AGN are rather anonymous Seyfert galaxies, mostly of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 subtype (nlSy1). We confirm the well-known X-ray variability by factors of a few. However, we also found strikingly different variability patterns: (i) a drop in the PSPC count rate by a factor of ~400 in WPVS007, (ii) a bolometrically dominant soft X-ray component decreasing in flux by a factor ~100 in IC 3599 accompanied by a decrease in optical emission line fluxes, and (iii) a drastic X-ray spectral change in RX J0134-42 from ultrasoft to a typical hard Seyfert spectrum. These dramatic variations occur within a (few) year(s), implying that the accretion flow in the immediate vicinity of the central black hole must have undergone a major change. We have identified the ROSAT source RX J0039.2-5117 with the previously almost unknown `narrow line' Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS007 (z=0.028). The X-ray source displays quite unusual properties for an AGN. It was bright and ultrasoft in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and found at a level lower by a factor of ~ 400 in PSPC count rate in 1993. The implied 0.1-2.4 keV luminosity during the RASS was ~ 10^{37} W. We report on AGN with extremely soft X-ray spectra observed with ROSAT. From their optical emission lines these objects are classified as narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1), almost all with extremely large Fe II/H-beta ratios and relatively narrow optical lines of hydrogen. Our results are based on a systematic study of 46 NLS1. We find that NLS1 have generally steeper soft X-ray continuum slopes than normal Seyfert 1s, and there may exist an anticorrelation between 0.1-2.4 keV continuum slope and the FWHM of the H-beta line. Objects with steep 0.1-2.4 keV continuum slopes and H-beta FWHM > 3000 km s^{-1} are clearly discriminated against by nature. When simple power-law models are fit to the data, photon indices reach values up to about 5, much higher than is usually seen in Seyfert 1s. We discuss steep ROSAT spectra in light of soft X-ray excess and hard X-ray tail models. We consider models for NLS1 where they are Seyfert 1s with extremal values of pole-on orientation, black hole mass and/or accretion rate, warm absorption and BLR thickness and confront these models with the known properties of NLS1. All simple models appear to have drawbacks, but models with smaller mass black holes and thicker BLRs show some promise. Zwicky 159.034, one of the Seyfert galaxies identified with EUV sources detected during the ROSAT Wide Field Camera (WFC) all-sky survey, has unusual properties. The ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) 0.1--2.5 keV X-ray spectrum, obtained simultaneously with the WFC survey, appears extremely steep. Subsequent deeper pointed observations with ROSAT revealed that its 0.1--2.5 keV count rate had decreased by an extremely large amount (a factor of about 70). This is comparable to the variability amplitude seen in another ultrasoft Seyfert, E1615+061. There appears to be about 10 times as much flux in the soft component as in any expected hard tail suggesting that, in the absence of partial covering of the hard flux, the soft flux cannot arise via reprocessing of the hard tail. Its peculiar optical spectrum has permitted lines with widths about 1200--1500 km s^{-1}, and forbidden lines are weak or absent.
