The compatibility between theoretical models and observations of the temperatures and anisotropic distributions of hydrogen and minor ions in the solar corona is examined. The ultraviolet coronagraph spectrometer (UVCS) instrument onboard SOHO measured hydrogen kinetic temperatures along lines of sight in coronal holes in excess of 3 x 10(exp 6) K and O(+5) ion kinetic temperatures of at least 2 x 10(exp 8) K. Various features of plasma heating by the dissipation of high-frequency ion-cyclotron resonance Alfven waves, which may be the most natural physical mechanism to produce certain plasma conditions, are examined. Preliminary quantitative models of the ion motion in polar coronal holes are presented, and it is shown that such models can be used to predict the spectrum of waves required to reproduce the observations. Indeed, the more ionic species that are observed spectroscopically, the greater the extent in frequency space the wave spectrum can be inferred.

The long-lived spots caused by the impact of fragments of Comet S-L 9 on Jupiter can be understood if clouds of dust are produced by the impact. These clouds reside in the stratosphere, where they absorb visible light that would ordinarily reflect from the cloud deck below, and reflect radiation at infrared wavelengths that would ordinarily be absorbed by atmospheric methane. Here we show that, provided that the nucleus of a fragment is composed substantially of silicates and has a diameter greater than about 0.4 km, dust in the required amounts will condense from the hot gas composed of cometary and Jovian material ejected from the site where the fragment entered, and the dust will be suspended in the stratosphere for long periods. Particles about 1 micron in radius can explain both the optical properties and longevities of the spots. According to our model, a silicate band should be present in the 10 - micron spectra of the spots.

Studies of the entry of fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 into the atmosphere of Jupiter give conflicting predictions as to whether or not most of the energy is deposited above the clouds. Using analytical models, we find that for a typical fragment radius of 1.5 km, both deceleration and mass loss (ablation) are negligible above the 1 bar level, so most of the energy will be deposited below the clouds, where radiation is blocked from escaping. The bulk of the energy produced by entering fragments will be observable only if the energy deposited below the clouds is transported above the clouds by means other than radiation. We provide new calculations of the flattening of fragments by ram pressure, of radiation-driven evaporative ablation and of ablation of droplets formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.

We present a model of AGN based on accretion disks around 10 exp 8 solar mass black holes, which incorporates a strong magnetic field in the disk, with loops above the disk in which B is about 100 G. The magnetic energy in the loops dissipates, accelerating electrons to relativistic energies. The electrons emit synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation, much of which is reflected or scattered by gas in the disk. We calculate the emitted spectrum from infrared to gamma rays. Of the total emission, 23 percent goes into a nu exp -1 power law and 77 percent into thermal radiation at 24,000 K (due to the disk, which is heated by nonthermal radiation and energetic ions). The model accounts quantitatively for the X-ray and gamma-ray backgrounds, and it accounts qualitatively for certain features observed in individual AGNs: a far-infrared cutoff, a minimum at a few microns, the ultraviolet bump, the Compton reflection bump at about 30 keV, and a gamma-ray tail.

The gamma-ray spectrum of an AGN in the Compton reflection model is calculated and the contribution of such sources to the cosmic gamma-ray background is considered. The spectrum is composed of three parts: an X-ray power law, a broad hump from roughly 10 to 120 keV due to reprocessing of the power-law X-ray spectrum by cold gas, and gamma rays which are due to the inverse-Compton scattering of X-rays. The contribution of such sources to the cosmic gamma-ray background is computed and it is found that they provide an excellent fit to the entire background spectrum from 3 keV to 10 MeV. Constraints on the physical conditions in these sources are derived based on these results and the possibility of observing such sources with GRO is considered.

This paper discusses further the model of Fabian et al. (1990) for the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) spectrum, in which the emission is due to AGNs at large redshifts. Each AGN emits a power-law spectrum modified by Compton reflection from cold gas. It is found that the model provides an excellent fit to the XRB from 3 to 500 keV if the sources radiate from a maximum redshift of at least 3.75, if their comoving emissivity varies like (1 + z) exp beta, with beta between 1.8 and 3.3, and if the intrinsic power-law energy index is between 0.9 and 1.2. About 90 percent of the power-law radiation in each AGN must be processed by Compton reflection. The model predicts that the intensity of the XRB below 3 keV is significantly above that extrapolated from observations above 3 keV, without requiring contributions from other types of source.

This paper considers constraints on models of the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) in which the XRB is produced by optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung from hot gas. It is shown that models in which the gas is gravitationally confined in a spherical configuration and is heated only once are contradicted by the observed number of gravitationally lensed quasars together with the lower limit on the number of XRB sources required by limits on fluctuations in the XRB and the cosmic microwave background. In addition, it is shown that, for models in which the gas is not gravitationally confined, the expansion time of the gas is much shorter than the radiative cooling time, so that such models cannot explain the XRB. It is concluded that thermal bremsstrahlung models cannot account for the XRB if the emitting gas is heated only once.

The statistical significance of the apparent correlation between sunspots and the observed neutrino rate is quantified. It is shown that the correlation depends almost entirely upon four low neutrino capture rates near the beginning of 1980. A calculation based on standard electroweak theory and neutrino production processes demonstrates that a correlation, if real, would be extremely puzzling on energetic grounds alone. It is concluded that measurements with the Cl-37 detector during the next sunspot cycle will be needed to show that there is a physical correlation, since the existing data are not statistically significant at a definitive level.

The possible production of shadow matter during the period of cosmic inflation is considered. The superstring theory of Gross et al. (1985), which results in a gauge group E8 x E8, could, at low energies, result in the existence of two sectors: an observed sector associated with all familiar particles and interactions, and a hidden one whose particles couple only through gravitational interactions with ordinary matter. It is demonstrated here that if, in the early universe, an inflationary phase is associated with the breaking of one of the symmetries in the E8 x E8 theory, this strongly constrains the physics of both sectors if shadow matter is to be the missing mass in the universe.

Comets, carbonaceous chondrites, and interstellar clouds are discussed in relation to information on interstellar dust. The formation and presence of carbon in stars, comets, and meteorites is investigated. The existence of graphite in the interstellar medium, though it is predicted from thermodynamic calculations, is questioned and the form of carbon contained in comets is considered.

Data on abundances of interstellar atoms, ions and molecules in front of zeta Oph are assembled and analyzed. The gas-phase abundances of at least 11 heavy elements are significantly lower, relative to hydrogen, than in the solar system. The abundance deficiencies of certain elements correlate with the temperatures derived theoretically for particle condensation in stellar atmospheres or nebulae, suggesting that these elements have condensed into dust grains near stars. There is evidence that other elements have accreted onto such grains after their arrival in interstellar space. The extinction spectrum of zeta Oph can be explained qualitatively and, to a degree, quantitatively by dust grains composed of silicates, graphite, silicon carbide, and iron, with mantles composed of complex molecules of H, C, N, and O. This composition is consistent with the observed gas-phase deficiencies.

Measurements are described of atmospheric conditions affecting astronomical observations at White Mountain, California. Measurements were made at more than 1400 times spaced over more than 170 days at the Summit Laboratory and a small number of days at the Barcroft Laboratory. The recorded quantities were ten micron sky noise and precipitable water vapor, plus wet and dry bulb temperatures, wind speed and direction, brightness of the sky near the sun, fisheye lens photographs of the sky, description of cloud cover and other observable parameters, color photographs of air pollution astronomical seeing, and occasional determinations of the visible light brightness of the night sky. Measurements of some of these parameters have been made for over twenty years at the Barcroft and Crooked Creek Laboratories, and statistical analyses were made of them. These results and interpretations are given. The bulk of the collected data are statistically analyzed, and disposition of the detailed data is described. Most of the data are available in machine readable form. A detailed discussion of the techniques proposed for operation at White Mountain is given, showing how to cope with the mountain and climatic problems.

The rotational excitation of H2 molecules by interstellar shock waves is calculated. Level populations integrated through a shock in a cloud with a density of 10 per cu cm have nearly exponential distributions, with effective rotational temperatures T sub r = 15 V to the 1.5 power K, where V is the shock velocity in km/sec. Ortho-para conversion is effective for high shock velocities, but not for low ones, so that the degree of alternation of intensities of rotational lines in the Lyman absorption band should be correlated with V, and therefore with T sub 2. The results are compared with observations of H2 rotational levels made by the Copernicus satellite.

We interpret recent far-infrared observations of H II regions in terms of true absorption by internal dust of a significant fraction of the Lyman-continuum photons. We present approximate analytic expressions describing the effects of internal dust on the ionization structure of H II regions, and outline a procedure for deducing the properties of this dust from optical and infrared observations.

Analytic discussion of the ionization produced in a uniform medium by a bremsstrahlung X-ray source. In particular, the ionization of interstellar gas in the vicinity of Sco X-1 is considered, and the analysis is formulated in terms of the specific parameters associated with this source. A constant temperature in the medium surrounding Sco X-1 is assumed, and simple numerical and analytic solutions are obtained for electron density and emitted radiation variation with distance from the X-ray source.
