The development of the retina is under tight temporal and spatial control. To gain insights into the molecular basis of this process, we generate a single-nuclei dual-omic atlas of the human developing retina with approximately 220,000 nuclei from 14 human embryos and fetuses aged between 8 and 23-weeks post-conception with matched macular and peripheral tissues. This atlas captures all major cell classes in the retina, along with a large proportion of progenitors and cell-type-specific precursors. Cell trajectory analysis reveals a transition from continuous progression in early progenitors to a hierarchical development during the later stages of cell type specification. Both known and unrecorded candidate transcription factors, along with gene regulatory networks that drive the transitions of various cell fates, are identified. Comparisons between the macular and peripheral retinae indicate a largely consistent yet distinct developmental pattern. This atlas offers unparalleled resolution into the transcriptional and chromatin accessibility landscapes during development, providing an invaluable resource for deeper insights into retinal development and associated diseases.

Hematopoietic stem cells and multipotential progenitors emerge in multiple, overlapping waves of fetal development. Some of these populations seed the bone marrow and sustain adult B- and T-cell development long-term after birth. However, others are present transiently, but whether they are vestigial or generate B and T cells that contribute to the adult immune system is not well understood. We now report that transient fetal progenitors distinguished by expression of low levels of the PU.1 transcription factor generated activated and memory T and B cells that colonized and were maintained in secondary lymphoid tissues. These included the small and large intestines, where they may contribute to the maintenance of gut homeostasis through at least middle age. At least some of the activated/memory cells may have been the progeny of B-1 and marginal zone B cells, as transient PU.1low fetal progenitors efficiently generated those populations. Taken together, our data demonstrate the potential of B- and T-cell progeny of transient PU.1low fetal progenitors to make an early and long-term contribution to the adult immune system.

Tissue regeneration after damage is generally thought to involve the mobilization of adult stem cells that divide and differentiate into progressively specialized progeny. However, recent studies indicate that tissue regeneration can be accompanied by reversion to a fetal-like state. During this process, cells at the injury site reactivate programs that operate during fetal development but are typically absent in adult homeostasis. Here, we summarize our current understanding of the molecular signals and epigenetic mediators that orchestrate "fetal-like reversion" during intestinal regeneration. We also explore evidence for this phenomenon in other organs and species and highlight open questions that merit future examination.

Data from Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus), harvested during 1973–2021 by aboriginal subsistence hunters, were used to estimate reproductive parameters: length at sexual maturity (LSM), age at sexual maturity (ASM), pregnancy rate (PR), and calving interval. Sexual maturity (N = 187 females) was determined from the presence/absence of corpora in the ovaries, or a fetus. Using sampling bias-corrected logistic regression, LSM was estimated at 13.5 m, 95% CI [13.0, 13.8]. There was a downward trend in LSM over time, statistically significant with one method but marginal with another. A growth model translated this estimate to an ASM estimate of 23.5 years, 95% CI [20.4, 26.7]. Pregnancy rate was determined from mature females (N = 125), and from a subset limited to certain autumn-caught whales (n = 37) to reduce bias. The PR was estimated at 0.46 globally, 95% CI [0.36, 0.55] and 0.38 for the autumn sample, 95% CI [0.20, 0.51]. Both estimated PRs are consistent with a 3-year calving interval, because the larger estimate includes two cohorts of pregnant whales harvested in spring, and bowhead whale gestation is longer than 12 months. These analyses represent the most conclusive empirical estimates of ASM, LSM, and PR for this bowhead whale stock from the largest available data sets to date.

OBJECTIVES: Determine the incremental diagnostic yield of prenatal exome sequencing (pES) over chromosome microarray (CMA) or G-banding karyotype in fetuses with central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. METHODS: Data were collected via electronic searches from January 2010 to April 2022 in MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science and EMBASE. The NHS England prenatal exome cohort was also included. Incremental yield was calculated as a pooled value using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Thirty studies were included (n = 1583 cases). The incremental yield with pES for any CNS anomaly was 32% [95%CI 27%-36%; I2 = 72%]. Subgroup analysis revealed apparent incremental yields in; (a) isolated CNS anomalies; 27% [95%CI 19%-34%; I2 = 74%]; (b) single CNS anomaly; 16% [95% CI 10%-23%; I2 = 41%]; (c) more than one CNS anomaly; 31% [95% Cl 21%-40%; I2 = 56%]; and (d) the anatomical subtype with the most optimal yield was Type 1 malformation of cortical development, related to abnormal cell proliferation or apoptosis, incorporating microcephalies, megalencephalies and dysplasia; 40% (22%-57%; I2 = 68%). The commonest syndromes in isolated cases were Lissencephaly 3 and X-linked hydrocephalus. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal exome sequencing provides a high incremental diagnostic yield in fetuses with CNS abnormalities with optimal yields in cases with multiple CNS anomalies, particularly those affecting the midline, posterior fossa and cortex.

Maternal hyperglycemia contributes to abnormal fetal development; yet, how it affects fetal metabolism is poorly understood. Perez-Ramirez and colleagues recently provided a comprehensive metabolic atlas of fetal organs isolated from normal and diabetic pregnant mice, identifying novel metabolites and alterations in tissue glucose utilization throughout mid-to-late gestation by maternal hyperglycemia.

OBJECTIVE:  This study aimed to assess factors that influence patients decisions in accepting prenatal diagnostic testing following genetic counseling for increased risk of fetal aneuploidy. METHODS:  This is a retrospective cohort study of women at increased risk of fetal aneuploidy and genetic disorders who had genetic counseling from January 2012 to December 2016 at a single academic center. Demographics, indications for genetic counseling, and rates of diagnostic testing were collected and compared between those who accepted diagnostic testing and those who chose cell free DNA. The variables were analyzed using Chi-square, Fishers exact test, and multiple logistic regression. RESULT:  Of the 2,373 pregnant women who underwent genetic counseling for increased risk of fetal aneuploidy and genetic disorders during the study period, 321 women had diagnostic testing (13.5%). IntroductionMaternal intervillous monocytes (MIMs) and fetal Hofbauer cells (HBCs) are myeloid-derived immune cells at the maternal-fetal interface. Maternal reproductive history is associated with differential risk of pregnancy complications. The molecular phenotypes and roles of these distinct monocyte/macrophage populations and the influence of gravidity on these phenotypes has not been systematically investigated.MethodsHere, we used RNA sequencing to study the transcriptional profiles of MIMs and HBCs in normal term pregnancies.ResultsOur analyses revealed distinct transcriptomes of MIMs and HBCs. Genes involved in differentiation and cell organization pathways were more highly expressed in MIMs vs. HBCs. In contrast, HBCs had higher expression of genes involved in inflammatory responses and cell surface receptor signaling. Maternal gravidity influenced monocyte programming, as expression of pro-inflammatory molecules was significantly higher in MIMs from multigravidae compared to primigravidae. In HBCs, multigravidae displayed enrichment of gene pathways involved in cell-cell signaling and differentiation.DiscussionOur results demonstrated that MIMs and HBCs have highly divergent transcriptional signatures, reflecting their distinct origins, locations, functions, and roles in inflammatory responses. Furthermore, maternal gravidity influences the gene signatures of MIMs and HBCs, potentially modulating the interplay between tolerance and trained immunity. The phenomenon of reproductive immune memory may play a novel role in the differential susceptibility of primigravidae to pregnancy complications.

Maternal inflammation during gestation is associated with a later diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the specific impact of maternal immune activation (MIA) on placental and fetal brain development remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MIA by analyzing placental and brain tissues obtained from the offspring of pregnant C57BL/6 dams exposed to polyinosinic: polycytidylic acid (poly I: C) on embryonic day 12.5. Cytokine and mRNA content in the placenta and brain tissues were assessed using multiplex cytokine assays and bulk-RNA sequencing on embryonic day 17.5. In the placenta, male MIA offspring exhibited higher levels of GM-CSF, IL-6, TNFα, and LT-α, but there were no differences in female MIA offspring. Furthermore, differentially expressed genes (DEG) in the placental tissues of MIA offspring were found to be enriched in processes related to synaptic vesicles and neuronal development. Placental mRNA from male and female MIA offspring were both enriched in synaptic and neuronal development terms, whereas females were also enriched for terms related to excitatory and inhibitory signaling. In the fetal brain of MIA offspring, increased levels of IL-28B and IL-25 were observed with male MIA offspring and increased levels of LT-α were observed in the female offspring. Notably, we identified few stable MIA fetal brain DEG, with no male specific difference whereas females had DEG related to immune cytokine signaling. Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that MIA contributes to the sex- specific abnormalities observed in ASD, possibly through altered neuron developed from exposure to inflammatory cytokines. Future research should aim to investigate how interactions between the placenta and fetal brain contribute to altered neuronal development in the context of MIA.

Over the last decades, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a valuable adjunct to prenatal ultrasound for evaluating fetal malformations. Several radiological societies advocate for standardised and structured reporting practices to enhance the uniformity of imaging language. Compared to narrative formats, standardised and structured reports offer enhanced content quality, minimise reader variability, have the potential to save reporting time, and streamline the communication between specialists by employing a shared lexicon. Structured reporting holds promise for mitigating medico-legal liability, while also facilitating rigorous scientific data analyses and the development of standardised databases. While structured reporting templates for fetal MRI are already in use in some centres, specific recommendations and/or guidelines from international societies are scarce in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to propose a standardised and structured reporting template for fetal MRI to assist radiologists, particularly those with less experience, in delivering systematic reports. Additionally, the paper aims to offer an overview of the anatomical structures that necessitate reporting and the prevalent normative values for fetal biometrics found in current literature. Fetal age in Quarter Horses can be predicted within 2 weeks from 100- to 200- days of gestation using femur length, biparietal diameter (cranium diameter) and eye approximated volume. However, as pregnancy advances, the femur and cranium become too large to be imaged in their entirety using ultrasound and the corresponding biometric parameters can no longer be measured. In this longitudinal study, the proximal phalanx (P1) was evaluated as a novel biometric parameter for late gestation to predict fetal age and bone maturation. Transrectal ultrasound was performed in ten pregnant mares with known ovulation dates, every two weeks from 240- days of gestation until parturition. P1 was imaged in 69 % of the examinations. Inability to image P1 was due to obstructive positioning such as carpal or fetlock flexion, or posterior presentation of the fetus. Advancing fetal age did not affect visibility of P1. P1 length correlated significantly with days of gestation and a correlation equation was established: y = 0.3837x -69.55 where y is the predicted value of P1 length and x is the day of gestation (with day 0 being the day of ovulation). When P1 length was equal to or larger than the width of the ultrasound image (52.5 mm), 90 % of mares (9/10) were above 300- days of gestation. Ossification of the proximal and distal epiphysis of P1 typically appeared between 277- and 303 -days of gestation (mean: 288 days). The proximal epiphysis did not close before parturition whereas the distal one closed between 306- and 333-days of gestation (mean: 320 days). P1 epiphyseal appearance and closure occurred chronologically reflecting bone maturation. Radiographic findings at birth and prenatal ultrasound findings were in agreement, apart from timing of P1 distal epiphyseal closure. In conclusion, P1 length can be used as a new fetal biometric parameter to assess fetal age and growth after 240- days of gestation. The knowledge of P1 bone maturation process in utero as a marker for fetal bone development, may also be valuable in clinical decision-making when considering inducing parturition in the mare. Objective Magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4) provides effective fetal neuroprotection. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the association between antenatal MgSO 4 exposure and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Thus, herein, we aimed to evaluate the association between antenatal MgSO 4 exposure and PDA. Study Design Preterm infants born between 24 0/7 and 31 6/7 weeks of gestation were included in this retrospective study. Infants who died within the first 72 hours of life and those with significant congenital anomalies were excluded from the study. Echocardiographic and clinical assessment parameters were used to define PDA and hemodynamically significant PDA (hsPDA). Treatments were planned according to the standard protocols of the unit. The following data were collected from hospital medical records: perinatal characteristics, neonatal outcomes, detailed PDA follow-up findings, and maternal characteristics including MgSO 4 exposure and doses. Results Of the 300 included infants, 98 (32.6%) were exposed to antenatal MgSO 4. hsPDA rates were similar in the infants exposed and not exposed to antenatal MgSO 4 , when adjusted for antenatal steroid administration, gestational age, and birth weight (OR: 1.6, 95% CI: 0.849–3.118, p = 0.146). The rates of PDA ligation and open PDA at discharge were similar between the groups. A cumulative MgSO 4 dose of >20 g was associated with an increased risk of hsPDA (crude OR: 2.476, 95% CI: 0.893–6.864, p = 0.076; adjusted OR: 3.829, 95% CI: 1.068–13.728, p = 0.039). However, the cumulative dose had no effect on the rates of PDA ligation or open PDA at discharge. Rates of prematurity-related morbidities and mortality were similar between the groups. Conclusion Although antenatal MgSO 4 exposure may increase the incidence of hsPDA, it may not affect the rates of PDA ligation or open PDA at discharge. Further studies are required to better evaluate the dose-dependent outcomes and identify the MgSO 4 dose that not only provides neuroprotection but also has the lowest risk of adverse effects. Key Points Antenatal exposure of MgSO 4 may cause PDA. Antenatal MgSO 4 exposure may not increase the rates of PDA ligation or open PDA at discharge. Background: Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) is a preventable condition leading to maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Invariably, with all the knowledge about the serious consequences of MiP for the woman, the unborn child, and the neonate, the uptake of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Malaria in pregnancy using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) is low in most malaria-endemic countries, including Ghana. This study sought to examine the uptake and service user predictors of the implementation of IPTp-SP after the policy upgrade in 2014. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was carried out in two selected districts in the Volta Region. The study participants were randomly selected from communities within Nkwanta North and North Tongu District. A total of 438 mothers who have delivered in the past 24 months were selected for the study. The women were interviewed on their background, knowledge, and attitude toward the use of IPTp-SP using a structured questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression was done to determine the factors that influence the demand for IPTp-SP. The results were presented in the form of tables. Results: The mean number of antenatal care (ANC) attendance was 5 (SD:2.6) visits per client, with 262 (59.82%) of them getting the 3+ doses of IPTp-SP. Also, a significant 44 (10.1%) of the mothers did not receive any dose of IPTp-SP. Respondents who attended antenatal clinics 4–7 times had 7 (CI:3.9–12.3) times higher uptake of 3+ doses of IPTp-SP as compared to others who attended less than 4 visits. Similarly, women who had 8 or more visits had a 16.1 (CI: 5.9–43.6) times higher chance of getting more than 2 doses of IPTp-SP compared with others who had fewer than 4 attendances. Conclusion: The uptake of 3+ doses of IPTp-SP is still lower than the global target of 80%. Thus, the need for innovative interventions aimed at improving antenatal attendance and early booking for IPTp-SP are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major pregnancy metabolic disorder and is strongly linked with obesity. Kisspeptin is a hormone that increases several thousand-fold in the maternal circulation during human pregnancy, with placenta as its main source. Studies have suggested that kisspeptin regulates trophoblast invasion and promotes pancreatic insulin secretion and peripheral insulin sensitivity. In a well-characterized cohort of pregnant South African women and molecular and histological techniques, this study explored the impact and interaction of maternal obesity and GDM on kisspeptin (KISS1) signalling in relation to placental morphology and maternal and neonatal parameters. We found that GDM had no effect on placental KISS1 and KISS1R (KISS1 receptor) mRNA and/or protein expression. However, obesity reduced placental KISS1R mRNA expression even though overall KISS1 protein abundance or localization was not different from the non-obese group. Maternal and cord circulating KISS1 concentrations did not vary with obesity or GDM, but maternal circulating KISS1 was positively correlated with placenta weight in non-GDM obese women, and negatively correlated with placental intervillous space volume in non-GDM non-obese women. Cord serum KISS1 was positively correlated with infant weight in GDM obese women, but negatively correlated with maternal BMI in the non-obese GDM group. Placental syncytiotrophoblast extracellular vesicles exhibited detectable KISS1 and its abundance was ∼50 % lower in those from obese GDM compared to non-GDM women. In this retrospective cohort study, we compared neonatal and maternal outcomes after exposure of different psychopharmacological classes of drugs. Both psychiatric diseases and pharmacological treatment of these are associated with lower birth weights, lower APGAR scores, and NICU admission. Therefore, we tried to rule out the role of psychotropics as if no differences were found between pharmacological classes, the lower birthweights might not be attributable to these. We divided our groups in exposed to atypical antipsychotic drugs, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA), benzodiazepines, and different combinations of psychotropic drugs. The last group included SSRIs combined with benzodiazepines, methylphenidate, lithium, and classic antipsychotic drugs. We used univariate regression analysis to see which factors from our rich dataset including pharmacological class, are associated with birth weight, APGAR scores, gestational age, and NICU admission. The significant associations from univariate analyses were further analyzed using ancova analysis or logistic regression where applicable. We found no clinically relevant differences in neonatal and maternal outcomes between the different exposed pharmacological classes. Objective: To evaluate the clinical features and perinatal outcomes of antenatally diagnosed fetuses with omphalocele and gastroschisis. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective, single-center, cohort study of prenatally diagnosed fetuses with omphalocele and gastroschisis followed-up and delivered at a university hospital. Demographic, pregnancy, birth and perinatal outcomes were compared between gastroschisis and omphalocele. Results: A total of 75 fetuses with omphalocele and 21 cases with gastroschisis were evaluated. The mean maternal age of women carrying a fetus with omphalocele was significantly higher than the women with gastroschisis (p=0.001). Associated structural anomalies were found in 53.3% and 4.7% of fetuses with omphalocele and gastroschisis, respectively (p<0.001). The rate of chromosomal anomaly was 8.3% in pregnancies with omphalocele. In liveborn pregnancies, the mean gestational age at delivery and birth weight did not differ between the study groups. Time to postoperative oral intake, duration of parenteral nutrition and length of hospital stay were significantly longer in babies with gastroschisis than omphalocele (p<0.01). Rates of termination, intrauterine, neonatal and infant death of fetuses with omphalocele were 25.3%, 6.7%, 10.7% and 2.7% respectively. Time to postoperative oral intake, duration of parenteral nutrition and duration of hospitalization were significantly longer in babies with complex compared to simple gastroschisis (p<0.01). Survival rates were 95.2%, 82.9% and 20% in fetuses with gastroschisis, isolated and non-isolated omphalocele, respectively. Conclusion: Associated structural and chromosomal anomalies were significantly more common in fetuses with omphalocele compared to those with gastroschisis. Prognosis of fetuses with omphalocele depended on the associated structural and chromosomal anomalies, whereas bowel compromise was the main determining factor in gastroschisis. Purpose: To investigate perinatal outcomes and long-term infectious morbidity in children of mothers with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Methods: A population-based cohort study comparing perinatal outcomes and long-term infectious morbidity of offspring of mothers with and without FMF was conducted. All singleton deliveries between the years 1991–2021 in a tertiary medical center were included. The study groups were followed until 18 years of age for long-term infectious morbidity. A Kaplan–Meier survival curve was used to compare the cumulative incidence of long-term infectious morbidity, and generalized estimation equation (GEE) models as well as Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to control for confounders. Results: During the study period, 356,356 deliveries met the inclusion criteria. 411 of them were women with FMF. The mean follow-up period interval was 9.7 years (SD = 6.2) in both study groups. Using GEE models, preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, and low birth weight were independently associated with maternal FMF. The total infectious-related hospitalization rate was significantly higher in offspring born to mothers with FMF compared to the comparison group (Kaplan–Meier survival curve, log-rank p < 0.001). Using a Cox proportional hazards model, controlling for gestational age, maternal age, diabetes mellitus, cesarean delivery, and hypertensive disorders, being born to a mother with FMF was found to be an independent risk factor for long-term infection-related hospitalization of the offspring. Conclusion: Maternal FMF was found to be independently associated with long-term infection-related hospitalization of the offspring. This positive correlation may reflect an intra-uterine pro-inflammatory environment which may result in the offspring's long-term susceptibility to infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Visualizing (micro)vascular structures remains challenging for researchers and clinicians due to limitations in traditional radiological imaging methods. Exploring the role of vascular development in craniofacial malformations in experimental settings can enhance understanding of these processes, with the effectiveness of high-resolution imaging techniques being crucial for successful research in this field. Micro-CT imaging offers 3D microstructural insights, but requires contrast-enhancing staining agents (CESAs) for visualizing (micro)-vascular tissues, known as contrast-enhanced micro-CT (CECT). As effective contrast agents are crucial for optimal visualization, this review focuses on comparative studies investigating such agents for micro-vascular tissue imaging using micro-CT. Furthermore, we demonstrate the utilization of B-Lugol solution as a promising contrast agent for acquiring high-quality micro-CT images of (micro)vascular structures in human embryonic samples. Method: This scoping review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols. PubMed database provided relevant articles, screened initially by title and abstract. Inclusion and exclusion criteria defined outcomes of interest. Results: From an initial search, 273 records were identified, narrowed down to 9 articles after applying our criteria. Additionally, two articles were added through citation searching. This, a total of 11 articles were incorporated in this study. Conclusion: This micro-CT contrast agent review underscores the need for tailored choices based on research goals. Both Barium sulfate and Iodine-based agents showing excellent results, providing high resolution (micro) vascular content, especially in ex-vivo specimens. However, careful consideration of protocols and tissue characteristics remains imperative for optimizing the effectiveness of micro-CT imaging for the study of cranio-facial vascular development. Prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE) and tobacco–cannabis coexposure (PTCE) co-occur with negative maternal emotional functioning (termed prenatal risks) and together increase risk for child regulatory problems at early school age (ESA). Little is known about developmental processes in early childhood that may mediate this association. We examined two hypothesized mediational processes linking prenatal risks to ESA emotion regulation (ER) and lability–negativity; parasympathetic functioning at toddler age and chronic risk reflected by continued postnatal maternal negative emotional functioning (i.e., depression, anger/hostility, and emotion dysregulation) and substance exposure. Congruent with differential susceptibility theory, we examined interactions between sensitive parenting and toddler parasympathetic functioning predicting ESA ER. Finally, we explored the role of child sex as a moderator. Mothers (N = 247; 53% male infants; 51% Black, 31% White, 19% Hispanic, and 8% other or mixed race) were recruited in the first trimester of pregnancy into one of three groups: PTE (n = 81), PTCE (n = 97), and no substance exposure (n = 69) matched on age and education. Substance exposure was assessed using multiple methods, maternal negative emotional functioning via self-reports, parenting with observations, and child ER using teacher, maternal, and lab assessor reports. Results supported a chronic risk pathway with less support for a parasympathetic pathway. • The prevalence of prenatal ectopic kidney is quite low. • The most common locations of ectopic kidneys are the iliac fossa and lateral pelvic areas, respectively. • In ectopic kidney cases, both kidneys are equally affected in both genders. • Blood supply to ectopic kidneys is most commonly provided by the iliac artery and then the aorta. • The most common extraurinary anomalies accompanying prenatally diagnosed ectopic kidney are cardiac anomalies. To assess the characteristics, additional structural anomalies and postnatal urinary outcome of the cases diagnosed with fetal ectopic kidneys in the prenatal period. Cases having fetal ectopic kidneys, detected from a total of 14,617 pregnant women examined by routine detailed (Group 1) or indicated (Group 2) obstetric ultrasonography (USG) in a tertiary perinatology unit were analyzed. The prevalence of the cases, time of the diagnosis, sidedness of the affected kidney, anatomical location, origins of blood supply, additional urinary or extraurinary anomalies, and urinary complications during the postnatal follow-up period were investigated. We have detected 33 fetuses with ectopic kidneys in our cohort. The prevalence of fetal ectopic kidney was 0.22 %, with a median (min.-max.) diagnosis time of 21.3 (17.6–34) weeks. In the group in whom indicated USG was performed, the time of diagnosis was later compared to routine detailed USG (p = 0.04) group. There was no difference in terms of gender [male, (n = 14), female (n = 19), p = 0.38] and the sidedness of the ectopic kidneys (p = 0.38). The location of ectopic kidneys was most frequent in the iliac fossa (n = 20, 60.6 %) and in the lateral pelvic areas (n = 13, 39.3 %). The blood supply origin of ectopic kidneys was the common iliac artery in 22 (66.6 %), whereas the aorta in 11 cases (33.3 %). There was an additional urinary anomaly in 8 cases (24 %), an extraurinary structural anomaly, most commonly cardiac, and/or a soft marker for aneuploidy were presented in 16 cases (48 %). The most common urinary complication in the postpartum period was vesicoureteral reflux (n = 5). Ectopic kidney in the prenatal period is a rare structural anomaly that can equally affect both genders and both kidneys. The study conducted retrospective analysis design, aiming to explore the use of Microvascular Imaging Technique (MVFI) to assess fetal cerebral microcirculation and analyze the relationship between Microvascular Index (MVI) and fetal growth and development. 100 pregnant women who met the criteria for fetal growth restriction (FGR) provided in the Expert Consensus on Fetal Growth Restriction (2019 Edition) and underwent routine prenatal examinations at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Peking University Third Hospital from January 2021 to June 2023 were selected as the study subjects. A normal fetus with a fetal weight less than 10 % can be classified as FGR, Pregnant women with fetal umbilical artery (UA) systolic and diastolic (S/D) values ≥3 were included in the observation group, while 200 pregnant women with normal fetuses were selected as the control group during the same period. The fetuses' change in both groups were measured using color Doppler ultrasound, including bi-parietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL). The cerebral microcirculation of the fetuses in both groups was evaluated using MVFI, and the MVI values were compared. The clinical characteristics of FGR fetuses with umbilical artery S/D ratio ≥ 3 were summarized, and the correlation between fetal cerebral microvascular status and fetal growth and development was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The outcomes told that the BPD, HC, AC, and FL values of the fetuses in the control group were lower the other's value (P < 0.05), and the MVI and peak systolic velocity of the middle cerebral artery (MCA-PSV) values were also lower in the control group (P < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between fetal growth and development and MVI and MCA-PSV values in FGR fetuses. Background Limited research has explored the impact of mosquito repellents exposure during early life on ADHD symptoms. This study aimed to explore the associations of exposure to mosquito repellents from pregnancy to 3 years old and the prevalence of ADHD-like behaviours among children aged 3–9 years, and further identify the sensitive exposure period. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 12 275 children in Hefei City, China. Exposure was self-reported via primary caregivers. ADHD-like behaviours were measured by the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham, version IV scale (SNAP-IV), and Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). Cross-over analysis, binary logistic regression and linear regression were employed. Results After adjusting for confounding variables, early-life exposure to mosquito repellents was associated with a higher risk of ADHD-like behaviours (OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.49–2.19). By comparing the strength of the association for each subgroup, we found exposure during 1–3 years old was a sensitive period (OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.25–2.87) by the cross-over analysis. Furthermore, we found a dose–response relationship in which the likelihood of ADHD-like behaviours increased with children's early-life mosquito repellents exposure dose. Conclusions Early-life exposure to mosquito repellents is linked with an elevated risk of ADHD-like behaviours in children, with a sensitive period identified during 1–3 years old. Objective: Persistent buccopharyngeal membrane (PBM) is a rare anomaly associated with failure of ecto-endodermal resorption of the buccopharyngeal membrane on the 26th day of intrauterine life. The current literature has insufficient information about PBM. Design: Systematic Review. Patients, Participants: Online electronic databases such as PubMed-MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus were searched using appropriate keywords from the earliest available data until 30th August 2022, with no language restriction. Additional sources such as Google Scholar, major journals, gray literature, conference proceedings, and cross-referencing were also explored. Main Outcome Measures: The present systematic review evaluated and analysed the data available on PBM along with its treatment options and clinicopathological findings, prevalence, and prognosis of the patient. Results: Thirty-four publications with 37 reported cases were included in this systematic review. The majority of patients had dyspnea (n = 18), followed by dysphagia (n = 10). Approximately 16 patients suffering from PBM reported orofacial abnormalities. Seventeen patients reported complete PBM, and 18 patients had partial PBM. The treatment modality followed by most patients (n = 15) was surgical excision of the membrane, along with stent placement in four patients. Oropharyngeal reconstruction was performed in four cases. The overall prognosis and survival rate of this rare condition is good. Conclusion: This review suggests that PBM is poorly understood, and the diagnosis of partial PBM is confirmed only when the patient complains of difficulty in breathing or eating. Introduction: Thyroid function during pregnancy fluctuates with gestational weeks, seasons and other factors. However, it is currently unknown whether there is a fetal sex-specific thyroid function in pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fetal sex differences of maternal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) in pregnant women. Methods: This single-center retrospective real-world study was performed by reviewing the medical records of pregnant women who received regular antenatal health care and delivered liveborn infants in Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital (Pudong branch), from Aug. 18, 2013 to Jul. 18, 2020. Quantile regression was used to evaluate the relationship between various variables and TSH and FT4 concentrations. The quantile regression also evaluated the sex impact of different gestational weeks on the median of TSH and FT4. Results: A total of 69,243 pregnant women with a mean age of 30.36 years were included. 36197 (52.28%) deliveries were boys. In the three different trimesters, the median levels (interquartile range) of TSH were 1.18 (0.66, 1.82) mIU/L and 1.39 (0.85, 2.05) mIU/L, 1.70 (1.19, 2.40) mIU/L; and the median levels (interquartile range) of FT4 were 16.63 (15.16, 18.31) pmol/L, 14.09 (12.30, 16.20) pmol/L and 13.40 (11.52, 14.71) pmol/L, respectively. The maternal TSH upper limit of reference ranges was decreased more in mothers with female fetuses during gestational weeks 7 to 12, while their FT4 upper limit of the reference ranges was increased more than those with male fetuses. After model adjustment, the median TSH level was 0.11 mIU/L lower (P <0.001), and FT4 level was 0.14 pmol/L higher (P <0.001) for mothers with female fetuses than those with male fetuses during gestational weeks 9 to 12. Discussion: We identified sexual dimorphism in maternal thyroid function parameters, especially during 9-12 weeks of pregnancy. Based on previous research, we speculated that it may be related to the higher HCG levels of mothers who were pregnant with girls during this period. Background: Antenatal steroid therapy for fetal lung maturation is routinely administered to women at risk of preterm delivery. There is strong evidence to demonstrate benefit from antenatal steroids in terms of survival and respiratory disease, notably in infants delivered at or below 32 weeks' gestation. However, dosing remains unoptimized and lung benefits are highly variable. Current treatment regimens generate high-concentration, pulsatile fetal steroid exposures now associated with increased risk of childhood neurodevelopmental diseases. We hypothesized that damage-associated changes in the fetal hippocampal transcriptome would be independent of preterm lung function. Methods: Date-mated ewes carrying a single fetus at 122 ± 2dGA (term = 150dGA) were randomized into 4 groups: (i) Saline Control Group, 4×2ml maternal saline intramuscular(IM) injections at 12hr intervals (n = 11); or (ii) Dex High Group, 2×12mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections at 12hr intervals followed by 2×2ml IM saline injections at 12hr intervals (n = 12; representing a clinical regimen used in Singapore); or (iii) Dex Low Group, 4×1.5mg maternal IM dexamethasone phosphate injections 12hr intervals (n = 12); or (iv) Beta-Acetate Group, 1×0.125mg/kg maternal IM betamethasone acetate injection followed by 3×2ml IM sterile normal saline injections 12hr intervals (n = 8). Lambs were surgically delivered 48hr after first maternal injection at 122–125dGA, ventilated for 30min to establish lung function, and euthanised for necropsy and tissue collection. Results: Preterm lambs from the Dex Low and Beta-Acetate Groups had statistically and biologically significant lung function improvements (measured by gas exchange, lung compliance). Compared to the Saline Control Group, hippocampal transcriptomic data identified 879 differentially significant expressed genes (at least 1.5-fold change and FDR < 5%) in the steroid-treated groups. Pulsatile dexamethasone-only exposed groups (Dex High and Dex Low) had three common positively enriched differentially expressed pathways related in part to neurodegeneration ("Prion Disease", "Alzheimer's Disease", "Arachidonic Acid metabolism"). Adverse changes were independent of respiratory function during ventilation. Conclusions: Our data suggests that exposure to antenatal steroid therapy is an independent cause of damage- associated transcriptomic changes in the brain of preterm, fetal sheep. Background: Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is the most common cyanotic congenital heart defect in neonates but with low prenatal detection rate. This study sought to review the prenatal diagnosis, associated abnormalities, and mid-term postnatal outcomes of fetuses with TGA and investigate the integrated prenatal and postnatal management for TGA neonates. Methods: A total of 134 infants prenatally diagnosed with TGA in Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, China, from January 2009 to December 2022 were included in the study. The prenatal ultrasound data and neonatal records were reviewed to assess the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis. Univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox analyses were used to identify risk factors associated with prognosis in such individuals. Results: The population originated from 40 cities in 10 provinces in China, with integrated antenatal and postnatal management rate reaching 94.0% (126/134) and a high accuracy rate (99.3%) of prenatal primary diagnosis. The median period of follow-up was 1.6 [interquartile range (IQR) 0.1–4.3] years. There were 3 (2.2%) postnatal deaths, 118 (88.1%) patients undergoing arterial switch operation (ASO), 3 (2.2%) undergoing Rastelli operations and 5 (3.7%) doing stage operations. Of 118 patients receiving ASO, the major morbidity occurred in 64 patients (54.2%), and right ventricular outflow tract obstruction (RVOTO) in 31 (26.3%). In the multivariate logistic analysis, gestational ages at birth (OR = 0.953, 95% CI 0.910–0.991; p = 0.025) and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time (OR = 1.010, 95% CI 1.000–1.030; p = 0.038) were identified as independent risk factors associated with major morbidity. In the Cox multivariate analysis, aortic cross-clamping time (HR = 1.030, 95% CI 1.000–1.050; p = 0.017) was identified as independent risk factor associated with RVOTO. Conclusion: Earlier gestational ages at birth and longer CPB time are significantly associated with increased morbidity. During pregnancy, two fetomaternal interfaces, the placenta–decidua basalis and the fetal membrane–decidua parietals, allow for fetal growth and maturation and fetal–maternal crosstalk, and protect the fetus from infectious and inflammatory signaling that could lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. While the placenta has been studied extensively, the fetal membranes have been understudied, even though they play critical roles in pregnancy maintenance and the initiation of term or preterm parturition. Fetal membrane dysfunction has been associated with spontaneous preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks gestation) and preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes (PPROM), which is a disease of the fetal membranes. However, it is unknown how the individual layers of the fetal membrane decidual interface (the amnion epithelium [AEC], the amnion mesenchyme [AMC], the chorion [CTC], and the decidua [DEC]) contribute to these pregnancy outcomes. In this study, we used a single-cell transcriptomics approach to unravel the transcriptomics network at spatial levels to discern the contributions of each layer of the fetal membranes and the adjoining maternal decidua during the following conditions: scheduled caesarian section (term not in labor [TNIL]; n = 4), vaginal term in labor (TIL; n = 3), preterm labor with and without rupture of membranes (PPROM; n = 3; and PTB; n = 3). The data included 18,815 genes from 13 patients (including TIL, PTB, PPROM, and TNIL) expressed across the four layers. After quality control, there were 11,921 genes and 44 samples. The data were processed by two pipelines: one by hierarchical clustering the combined cases and the other to evaluate heterogeneity within the cases. Our visual analytical approach revealed spatially recognized differentially expressed genes that aligned with four gene clusters. Cluster 1 genes were present predominantly in DECs and Cluster 3 centered around CTC genes in all labor phenotypes. Cluster 2 genes were predominantly found in AECs in PPROM and PTB, while Cluster 4 contained AMC and CTC genes identified in term labor cases. We identified the top 10 differentially expressed genes and their connected pathways (kinase activation, NF-κB, inflammation, cytoskeletal remodeling, and hormone regulation) per cluster in each tissue layer. Our incomplete knowledge of maternal–fetal interface (MFI) physiology impedes a better understanding of the pathological mechanisms leading to pregnancy complications, such as pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. At the MFI, uterine natural killer (uNK) cells do not attack fetal cells but engage in crosstalk with both fetal and maternal cells to support feto-placental development. However, mother and fetus are genetically half-mismatched and certain combinations of variable immune genes—human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) and killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR), indeed, the most variable gene sets in the genome—associate with pregnancy outcomes, suggesting that these interactions regulate uNK cell function. How do these interactions influence the physiology and pathology at the MFI? Uterine NK cell function is regulated by both maternal and fetal Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC); however, evidence for fetal cells educating uNK cells is lacking, and new evidence shows that maternal rather than fetal MHC class I molecules educate uNK cells. Furthermore, uNK cell education works through self-recognition by the ancient and conserved NKG2A receptor. Pregnant mice lacking this receptor produce normal litter sizes, but a significant portion of the offspring have low birthweight and abnormal brain development. Evidence from a genome-wide association study of over 150,000 human pregnancies validates the finding because women whose NKG2A receptor is genetically determined to engage their own MHC class I molecules are exposed to lower risk of developing pre-eclampsia, suggesting that maternal uNK cell education is a pre-requisite for a healthy pregnancy and, likely, for healthy offspring too. It has been shown that vertical transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 strain is relatively rare, and there is still limited information on the specific impact of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection on vertical transmission. The current study focuses on a transcriptomics analysis aimed at examining differences in gene expression between placentas from mother–newborn pairs affected by COVID-19 and those from unaffected controls. Additionally, it investigates the in situ expression of molecules involved in placental inflammation. The Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, Italy, has recorded three instances of intrauterine transmission of SARS-CoV-2. The first two cases occurred early in the pandemic and involved pregnant women in their third trimester who were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. The third case involved an asymptomatic woman in her second trimester with a twin pregnancy, who unfortunately delivered two stillborn fetuses due to the premature rupture of membranes. Transcriptomic analysis revealed significant differences in gene expression between the placentae of COVID-19-affected mother/newborn pairs and two matched controls. The infected and control placentae were matched for gestational age. According to the Benjamani–Hochberg method, 305 genes met the criterion of an adjusted p-value of less than 0.05, and 219 genes met the criterion of less than 0.01. Up-regulated genes involved in cell signaling (e.g., CCL20, C3, MARCO) and immune response (e.g., LILRA3, CXCL10, CD48, CD86, IL1RN, IL-18R1) suggest their potential role in the inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2. RNAscope® technology, coupled with image analysis, was utilized to quantify the surface area covered by SARS-CoV-2, ACE2, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α on both the maternal and fetal sides of the placenta. A non-statistically significant gradient for SARS-CoV-2 was observed, with a higher surface coverage on the fetal side (2.42 ± 3.71%) compared to the maternal side (0.74 ± 1.19%) of the placenta. Although not statistically significant, the surface area covered by ACE2 mRNA was higher on the maternal side (0.02 ± 0.04%) compared to the fetal side (0.01 ± 0.01%) of the placenta. IL-6 and IL-8 were more prevalent on the fetal side (0.03 ± 0.04% and 0.06 ± 0.08%, respectively) compared to the maternal side (0.02 ± 0.01% and 0.02 ± 0.02%, respectively). The mean surface areas of IL-1β and IL-10 were found to be equal on both the fetal (0.04 ± 0.04% and 0.01 ± 0.01%, respectively) and maternal sides of the placenta (0.04 ± 0.05% and 0.01 ± 0.01%, respectively). The mean surface area of TNF-α was found to be equal on both the fetal and maternal sides of the placenta (0.02 ± 0.02% and 0.02 ± 0.02%, respectively). On the maternal side, ACE-2 and all examined interleukins, but not TNF-α, exhibited an inverse mRNA amount compared to SARS-CoV-2. On the fetal side, ACE-2, IL-6 and IL-8 were inversely correlated with SARS-CoV-2 (r = −0.3, r = −0.1 and r = −0.4, respectively), while IL-1β and IL-10 showed positive correlations (r = 0.9, p = 0.005 and r = 0.5, respectively). TNF-α exhibited a positive correlation with SARS-CoV-2 on both maternal (r = 0.4) and fetal sides (r = 0.9) of the placenta. Further research is needed to evaluate the correlation between cell signaling and immune response genes in the placenta and the vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2. This case report describes, for the first time, the management of a case of UT in both directions during a single gestation period in a 5‐year‐old Straight Egyptian Arabian mare. The mare was 8 months pregnant and experienced intermittent unresponsive colic signs. Rectal examination revealed clockwise 180° UT and ultrasonography showed a viable fetus. The haematological findings were within the normal range. The mare was surgically treated immediately by standing flank laparotomy (SFL) on the right side. 4 days later, the mare was returned to the clinic with the same complaint. Rectal and ultrasonography examinations revealed counterclockwise 180° UT and a viable fetus. The animal was subjected again to SFL on the left side. After surgeries, the mare recovered well, foaled at term and gave birth to a viable filly. She was bred again and conceived. This case is documented to demonstrate the occurrence of a UT in both directions during the same gestation period in mares, as well as the efficacy of SFL in rectifying the condition and allowing both the mother and foal to survive. Spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic, is used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and certain hyperandrogenic disorders. Its use during pregnancy is not recommended due to the risk of feminizing male fetuses, primarily because of its antiandrogenic activity. However, human data remain scarce and largely inconclusive. Here, we present the first case of a 25-year-old pregnant woman, at 16 weeks of gestation, who was inadvertently exposed to spironolactone (240 mg/day) for 1 week due to a pharmacy dispensing error. The patient subsequently delivered a healthy male infant with normal genitalia at 38 weeks of gestation following vaginal delivery. Current follow-up shows that the infant is healthy and developing normally. This article summarizes the potential causes of spironolactone-induced anomalous genital development and explores the safety of new-generation mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) during pregnancy. The mechanisms behind spironolactone-induced anomalous genital development in male fetuses have not been fully elucidated. Spironolactone competes with dihydrotestosterone for binding to androgen receptors and inhibits enzymes involved in androgen biosynthesis, which may partly explain its antiandrogenic effects. Recent advancements in MRAs have led to the development of compounds with higher selectivity for the mineralocorticoid receptor, thereby reducing the incidence of antiandrogen side effects. These new-generation MRAs may be effective alternatives during pregnancy, but more data are needed to establish their safety in pregnant women. This case contributes to the limited but growing body of literature on the safety profile of spironolactone in pregnancy, providing insights into its effects during a critical period of fetal development. Background: The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) and -gonadal (HPG) axes are two major pathways that connect the neural and endocrine systems in vertebrates. Factors such as prenatal stress and maternal exposure to exogenous steroids have been shown to affect these pathways during fetal development. Another less studied factor is the transfer of hormones across fetuses in multifetal pregnancies. This form of transfer has been shown to influence the morphology, anatomy, physiology, and behavior of the offspring in litter-bearing mammals, an influence termed the intrauterine position (IUP) effect. In this study, we sought to delineate how the IUP effects HPA and HPG brain receptors, peptides, and enzymes (hereafter components) in utero and how these influences may differ between males and females. Methods: We utilized the unconventional model of culled free-ranging nutria (Myocastor coypus), with its large natural variation. We collected brain tissues from nutria fetuses and quantified the expression of key HPA and HPG components in three brain regions: prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, and striatum. Results: We found an interaction between sex and IUP in the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GNRHR), androgen receptor (AR), and estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1). IUP was significant in both gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and its receptor GNRHR, but in different ways. In the hypothalamus, fetuses adjacent to same-sex neighbors had higher expression of GnRH than fetuses neighboring the opposite sex. Conversely, in the cortex, GNRHR exhibited the inverse pattern, and fetuses that were neighboring the opposite sex had higher expression levels than those neighboring the same sex. Regardless of IUP, in most components that showed significant sex differences, female fetuses had higher mRNA expression levels than male fetuses. We also found that HPA and HPG components were highly related in the early stages of gestation, and that there was an interaction between sex and developmental stage. In the early stages of pregnancy, female component expression levels were more correlated than males', but in the last trimester of pregnancy, male components were more related to each other than female's. Conclusions: This study suggests that there are sexually different mechanisms to regulate the HPA and HPG axes during fetal development. Higher mRNA expression levels of endocrine axes components may be a mechanism to help females cope with prolonged androgen exposure over a long gestational period. Additionally, these findings suggest different coordination requirements of male and female endocrine axes during stages of fetal development. Higher HPA and HPG axes receptors mRNA expression levels in females hint towards alternative sex-specific mechanisms that regulate endocrine axes during fetal development. Plain language summary: In litter-bearing mammals, the positioning of a fetus in the uterus relative to other fetuses of the same or opposite sex has been shown to directly influence fetal morphology and physiology, and later behavior, reproductive success, and survival in adults. In this study, we sought to understand the mechanisms by which the location in the uterus influences two major neuroendocrine pathways in fetal brains. We quantified expression of multiple receptors and an enzyme (referred to as 'components') of the endocrine axes in three different brain regions in fetal free-ranging nutrias. Our results showed higher expression in females than in males for some endocrine axes components. The location inside the uterus was also related to the expression of some components. Lastly, coordination between the axes was higher earlier on in gestation, and females were more coordinated than males in the second trimester, whereas males were more coordinated than females in the third trimester. If abortion remains a taboo experience anchored—in social, political and media discourse—in the notion of trauma, French literature of the last decades offers increasingly diversified narratives on the question. Wishing to move away from the binaries that have always animated debates on abortion, several authors reveal a much more varied spectrum of reactions towards this experience, which can be contradictory or ambiguous, combining relief with loss. This article focuses on this more complex vision of abortion through the analysis of three literary works of the last decade: Dix-sept ans by Colombe Schneck (2015); Ligne de partage des eaux by Fabienne Swiatly (2011); and Il fallait que je vous le dise by Aude Mermilliod (2019). After reviewing the discourses circulating around abortion, the article demonstrates how, in these works written in the first person, abortion registers as completion incompletion, leaving its marks in the women who might feel a connection to their foetus. Finally, these texts make it possible to read, see, and imagine a mosaic of abortion experiences. This gives rise to filiations made through the experience of abortion, bringing together women who underwent it and put it into words, and encouraging others to share their stories. The National Sanctity of Human Life Day (NSHL) was declared 22 times between 1984 and 2021. The proclamations were a strategy to strengthen electoral support for Republican presidents by validating the humanity of the unborn child. The presidents crafted a narrative of American exceptionalism supported by a beneficent Christian God, with the president serving as a moral leader. Collectively, the themes justified paternalistic authority over women's reproductive autonomy. This feminist rhetorical analysis reveals the evolving power of the unborn child ideology from 1984 to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Background/Aim. To date, most of the scientific attention has been aimed at the morphometric analysis of the nephrogenic zone (NZ) of the fetal renal cortex, while the quantification and analysis of the maturation zone (MZ) and other indicators of renal maturity were missing. The aim of the study was to examine the characteristics of fetal kidney cortex maturation, as well as to propose the development of a new cortical maturity index (CMI). Methods. The study included 42 paraffin molds of the fetal kidney, divided into three groups according to gestational age (GA). After hematoxylin and eosin staining, tissue sections were analyzed through the following parameters: the thickness of the NZ and MZ, the renal corpuscles area (RCa) and the glomerular capillary tuft area (GCTa), and the maturation stages of the glomeruli. In addition, a new parameter, CMI, was formed as a ratio of NZ and MZ thickness. The collected data were statistically processed. Results. Changes in NZ and MZ thickness were statistically significant, and they correlated with GA. A value of CMI higher than 0.2 was recorded in the kidney samples of fetuses younger than the 20th gestational week (GW), while a value lower than 0.1 was recorded in the samples older than the 30th GW. With an increase in GA in all zones of the renal cortex, RCa and GCTa decreased. A statistically significant reduction of GCTa was observed in the oldest group in the juxtamedullary and intermediate zones of the cortex (p < 0.01). Glomeruli located in the deeper parts of the cortex were more mature than the superficial ones. Conclusion. The measured parameters can serve as a starting point for future studies that would analyze the histomorphological characteristics of the fetal kidney cortex. In the absence of clinical data, a newly formed parameter CMI can represent assistance with the determination of GA, as it significantly correlates with GA (p < 0.01). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Critical aortic stenosis (AS) in fetuses may progress to hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) with need for postnatal single ventricular (SV) palliation. Fetal aortic valvuloplasty (FAV) is performed to achieve postnatal biventricular (BV) circulation. However, the impact of FAV on fetal myocardial function is difficult to measure. Prediction of postnatal circulatory status and, therefore, counseling is challenging. Methods: Retrospective study of fetuses with critical AS who underwent FAV. Global Longitudinal Peak Systolic Strain (GLPSS) of the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) were retrospectively analyzed before and after intervention. Fisher's Exact Test and Mann–Whitney-U Test were used for univariant statistical analysis. Results: 23 fetuses with critical AS were included. After intervention fetuses demonstrated more negative LV-GLPSS mean values post- vs. pre-intervention (− 5.36% vs. − 1.57%; p < 0.05). RV-GLPSS was decreased in all fetuses, there was no peri-interventional change. 20 fetuses were born alive. Postnatally, 10 had BV and 10 SV circulation. Improved post-interventional LV-GLPSS strain values correlated with BV outcome (p < 0.05). Pre-interventional continuous LV-GLPSS values correlated with postnatal SV vs. BV outcome (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In some fetuses, LV myocardial function assessed by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) improves after FAV. Improved post-interventional LV-GLPSS correlates with biventricular postnatal outcome. Furthermore, pre-interventional LV- and RV-GLPSS correlate with postnatal outcome. Further studies are needed to asses, if pre-interventional STE parameters might predict which fetuses will benefit from FAV with postnatal BV circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The placenta plays a crucial role in maintaining normal pregnancy. The failure of spiral artery remodeling (SAR) is a key factor leading to placental ischemia and poor perfusion which is strongly associated with obstetric diseases, including preeclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR). Existing interventions for PE and FGR are limited and termination of pregnancy is inevitable when the maternal or fetus condition deteriorates. Considering the safety of the mother and fetus, treatments that may penetrate the placental barrier and harm the fetus are not accepted. Developing targeted treatment strategies for these conditions is urgent and necessary. With the proven efficacy of targeted therapy in treating conditions such as endometrial cancer and trophoblastic tumors, research on placental dysfunction continues to deepen. This article reviews the studies on placenta-targeted treatment and drug delivery strategies, summarizes the characteristics proposes corresponding improvement measures in targeted treatment, provides solutions for existing problems, and makes suggestions for future studies. The dietary choices a mother makes during pregnancy offer her developing fetus its earliest exposure to the family's culinary preferences. This comprehensive literature review synthesizes five decades of research, which has provided valuable insights into fetal flavor learning. Converging evidence across various species supports the functionality of fetal chemoreceptive systems by the end of gestation, enabling the detection of an extensive array of chemosensory cues derived from the maternal diet and transmitted to the amniotic fluid. The fetus effectively encodes these flavors, resulting in their enhanced acceptance after birth. While existing studies predominantly concentrate on fetal learning about odor volatiles, limited evidence suggests a capacity for learning about gustatory (i.e., taste) properties. Examining whether these prenatal odor, taste, and flavor experiences translate into enduring shifts in dietary behaviors beyond weaning remains a crucial avenue for further investigation. Linear growth during three distinct stages of life determines attained stature in adulthood: namely, in utero, early postnatal life, and puberty and the adolescent period. Individual host factors, genetics, and the environment, including nutrition, influence attained human stature. Each period of physical growth has its specific biological and environmental considerations. Recent epidemiologic investigations reveal a strong influence of prenatal factors on linear size at birth that in turn influence the postnatal growth trajectory. Although average population height changes have been documented in high-income regions, stature as a complex human trait is not well understood or easily modified. This review summarizes the biology of linear growth and its major drivers, including nutrition from a life-course perspective, the genetics of programmed growth patterns or height, and gene–environment interactions that determine human stature in toto over the life span. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are contraindicated during pregnancy because of fetal toxicity. All previous reports on adverse fetal outcomes involved women who continued to take low‐dose ARBs for hypertension and were unaware of the adverse effects. Herein, we report the case of a 23‐year‐old pregnant woman in her third trimester who experienced an ARB overdose after an argument with her partner. Pregnancy was complicated by transient oligohydramnios, and fetal magnetic resonance imaging suggested renal failure. Despite these concerns, the newborn had no morphological abnormalities or abnormal neurological findings. Renal impairment improved over time, and the infant grew well. A single overdose of ARBs in the third trimester can lead to fetal renal failure, similar to long‐term low‐dose ARB administration; however, favorable outcomes are possible. An overdose of ARBs may transiently cause renal failure, which may improve. The study findings may inform counseling for women who are unexpectedly exposed to an overdose of ARBs. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have regenerative and immunomodulatory potential and may be used to treat injured tissues. Pregnancy has been associated with increased MSCs in the peripheral circulation in multiple species, but to date, there are no reports on this matter in horses. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pregnancy on isolation efficiency and proliferation capacity of equine MSCs derived from the peripheral blood (PB) of mares. Venous blood samples were collected at the 11th month of gestation and 1 month after delivery from clinically healthy Arabian mares that presented normal pregnancies. Blood samples were processed for in vitro cellular culture and hormonal and metabolic profiles. MSCs were isolated and characterized by trilineage differentiation potential, immunophenotyping, analyzed by gene sequencing and proliferation assays. The isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of pregnant mares were associated with higher isolation efficiency and proliferative capacity of MSCs derived from peripheral blood (PB-MSCs) recovered pre-partum than those isolated post-partum. Although fetal gender, parity, 5α-reduced pregnanes, insulin, and cortisol were shown to affect cellular proliferation, individual factors and the small population studied must be considered. • Collagen XVIII isoforms differ in their expression during nephrogenesis, where the short isoform is expressed in the early phases of nephron development and the two longer forms are detected only in more mature stage of nephrogenesis. • The lack of collagen XVIII isoforms leads to distinct congenital ultrastructural defects of nephrons. • Collagen XVIII deficient fetuses show decreased nephron progenitor cell numbers and changes in nephron progenitors' cell cycle progression. • Altered Sall1 expression and increased macrophage influx in the developing kidney might play a role in the detected defects in the nephron progenitor cell population in collagen XVIII deficient fetuses. Renal development is a complex process in which two major processes, tubular branching and nephron development, regulate each other reciprocally. Our previous findings have indicated that collagen XVIII (ColXVIII), an extracellular matrix protein, affects the renal branching morphogenesis. We investigate here the role of ColXVIII in nephron formation and the behavior of nephron progenitor cells (NPCs) using isoform-specific ColXVIII knockout mice. The results show that the short ColXVIII isoform predominates in the early epithelialized nephron structures whereas the two longer isoforms are expressed only in the later phases of glomerular formation. Meanwhile, electron microscopy showed that the ColXVIII mutant embryonic kidneys have ultrastructural defects at least from embryonic day 16.5 onwards. Similar structural defects had previously been observed in adult ColXVIII-deficient mice, indicating a congenital origin. The lack of ColXVIII led to a reduced NPC population in which changes in NPC proliferation and maintenance and in macrophage influx were perceived to play a role. The changes in NPC behavior in turn led to notably reduced overall nephron formation. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs in 8% of human pregnancies, and the growth restricted newborn is at a greater risk of developing heart disease in later adult life. In sheep, experimental restriction of placental growth (PR) from conception results in FGR, a decrease in cardiomyocyte endowment and an upregulation of pathological hypertrophic signalling in the fetal heart in late gestation. However, there is no change in the expression of markers of cellular proliferation nor in the level of cardiomyocyte apoptosis in the heart of the PR fetus in late gestation. This suggests that FGR arises early in gestation and programs a decrease in cardiomyocyte endowment in early, rather than late, gestation. Here, control and PR fetal sheep were humanely killed at 55 days' gestation (term, 150 days). Fetal body and heart weight were lower in PR compared with control fetuses and there was evidence of sparing of fetal brain growth. While there was no change in the proportion of cardiomyocytes that were proliferating in the early gestation PR heart, there was an increase in measures of apoptosis, and markers of autophagy and pathological hypertrophy in the PR fetal heart. These changes in early gestation highlight that FGR is associated with evidence of early cell death and compensatory hypertrophic responses of cardiomyocytes in the fetal heart. The data suggest that early placental restriction results in a decrease in the pool of proliferative cardiomyocytes in early gestation, which would limit cardiomyocyte endowment in the heart of the PR fetus in late gestation. Some Anglican Churches have adopted permissive acceptance of abortion while expressing the hope it will be rare. This presumes competition between the welfare of the woman and that of her unborn child. In this article, I will critique statements from the Church of England and The Episcopal Church, United States through a feminist-pastoral perspective. I will look principally at early abortions which are often a response to unintended pregnancy. I will discuss abortion alongside miscarriage challenging pro-natal assumptions inherent in the Christian tradition. I will also discuss the costs of pregnancy. In doing so, I will draw on the pragmatic and pastoral strengths of Anglican theology to argue for a position that respects and supports women's moral decision to not bring a new life into being, recognizing this can be a considered response for the welfare of a potential child as well as for the woman. In John 10:7-10, Jesus promises that he has come so that we may have life in all its fullness. This article examines life in its fullness from an Anglican perspective, articulating a Christian ethic that asserts freedom, voice, identity, and an opportunity to flourish are essential components to such a life. Life experiences illuminate ways in which the choice about whether or not to terminate a pregnancy helped define full life for both mothers and children. These insights grow out of experiences working in a teenage parent program in Florida and as the director of a family planning clinic in the rural west. The premise of the article is that both scripture and our Anglican tradition imagine life to mean more than just subsistence, and that current prohibitions on abortion, even before fetus viability, thwart Christ's vision for life, most poignantly for women and children in poor and rural settings.
