Portage is a scalable and extensible remap library for numerical simulations. It supports state-of-the-art remap schemes for meshes and particles in 2D and 3D up to a second-order accuracy. Portage ensures critical properties such as local/global conservation and bounds preservation for mesh remap. It enables multi-material field remap through a dedicated plugin, and leverages the hybrid parallelism exposed by advanced architectures using multi-processing and multi-threading.

Digital Humanities brings, among other things, digital sources, algorithms, and software into the field of humanities. This typically requires additional skills and expertise from disciplines outside of the humanities such as programming knowledge, data science, or statistics. The more complex the envisioned digital output, the more in-depth technical skills are usually required. This is true for most academic disciplines; many projects cannot be accomplished anymore without collaborating with someone with technical expertise. Often this expertise can be found in software engineers who work with researchers on their projects. Depending on the context, many of these people call themselves Research Software Engineers. Over the last 10 years, the awareness for this role within academia has steadily increased. The first association of Research Software Engineers was founded in 2013 in the UK, followed by several other national associations. In early 2018, the United States Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) was established with the goal to create a community, advocate, and provide resources for Research Software Engineers in order to advance research by improving the quality and trustworthiness of research software. US-RSE holds regular community calls, hosts virtual workshops, and had its first annual member meeting in December 2020. US-RSE has grown quickly from a couple of members to over 600 within just three years. This poster will present the US-RSE Association, its goals and initiatives. It will be an invitation to everyone doing the “technical part” of a digital humanities project to join and find like-minded people for exchange and support.

Research of all kinds is increasingly dependent on developing and using software to solve specific research problems. However, not every researcher can be expected to be an expert in software development. Sustainable and robust research software requires Research Software Engineers (RSEs) who combine knowledge of research domains with software development skills.These Research Software Engineers face challenges in career development, competitive compensation, stable employment, recognition, and finding colleagues and managers. The US Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) is a member-driven organization that is building a community of people who use the skills and practices of software engineering to build robust, manageable, and sustainable research software. The Association's mission is to improve research software through three main activities: providing a community to individuals working in the research software space; providing resources for current and future RSEs to hone their skills; and advocating for the RSE role with academic and commercial organizations and with research sponsors.This poster will introduce the US-RSE Association and help people understand the RSE landscape, and where they might fit in.A poster presented at the SIAM CSE21 conference, minisymposterium PP7: Software Productivity and Sustainability for CSE.

The US Research Software Engineer Association (US-RSE) is a community-driven organization centered around the people writing and contributing to research software or Research Software Engineers (RSEs) as they have come to be known. By bringing the skills and practices of software engineering to research, in an effort to create more robust, manageable, and sustainable research software, RSEs are playing an increasingly important role within the computational science and engineering research ecosystem. The US-RSE’s organizational mission is centered around three main goals: providing a community to those who identify as an RSE; advocating for the RSE role; and providing resources for current and future RSEs, as well as institutions and organizations supporting RSEs. Membership is easy and free and we welcome all those who relate to the US-RSE’s mission, especially those who identify as RSEs, those interested in a career as an RSE, and those who may not be RSEs but consider themselves RSE “allies.” In this talk, I will describe some of the recent activities of the US-RSE Association, future goals of the organization, and explain how individuals can join and get involved.
