This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering of time-harmonic acoustic plane waves by a multi-layered fluid–solid medium in the three dimensional space. We establish the global uniqueness in identifying the embedded penetrable solid obstacle, the surrounding fluid medium and its wave number from the acoustic far-field pattern for all incident plane waves at a fixed frequency. The proof depends on constructing different kinds of interior transmission problems in appropriate small domains and the a priori estimates derived for both the elastic wave fields in the embedded solid obstacle and the acoustic wave fields in the surrounding fluid medium.

Consider the inverse problem of recovering a multi-layered fluid-solid medium from many acoustic measurements corresponding to time-harmonic acoustic plane waves. We prove that both the supports of the embedded solid obstacle and the surrounding layered fluid medium can be uniquely identified by means of acoustic far-field pattern for all incident wave fields at a fixed frequency. Our proof is based on the constructions of some well-posed partial differential equation systems in sufficiently small domains combined with the a priori estimates for the solutions of the forward scattering problem.

Consider the fluid-solid interaction problem for a two-layered non-penetrable cavity. We provide a novel fundamental proof for a uniqueness theorem on the determination of the interface between acoustic and elastic waves from many internal measurements, disregarding the boundary conditions imposed on the exterior non-penetrable boundary. Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering of an incident point source inside an inhomogeneous cavity. By constructing an equivalent integral equation, the well-posedness of the direct problem is proved in $L^p$ with using the classical Fredholm theory. Motivated by the previous work [ 10 ], a novel uniqueness result is then established for the inverse problem of recovering the refractive index of piecewise constant function from the wave fields measured on a closed surface inside the cavity.

Consider the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves by an inhomogeneous medium with complex refractive index. We show that an approximate factorization method can be applied to reconstruct the support of the complex inhomogeneous medium from the far-field data. This paper is concerned with the global existence and uniform boundedness of solutions for two classes of chemotaxis models in two or three dimensional spaces. Firstly, by using detailed energy estimates, special interpolation relation and uniform Gronwall inequality, we prove the global existence of uniformly bounded solutions for a class of chemotactic systems with linear chemotactic-sensitivity terms and logistic reaction terms. Secondly, by applying detailed analytic semigroup estimates and special iteration techniques, we obtain the global existence of uniformly bounded solutions for a class of chemotactic systems with nonlinear chemotacticsensitivity terms, which extends the global existence results of [6] to other general cases.

This paper is concerned with the direct and inverse problem of scattering of a time-harmonic wave by a Lipschitz diffraction grating of mixed type. The scattering problem is modeled by the mixed boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in the unbounded half-plane domain above a periodic Lipschitz surface on which a mixed Dirichlet and impedance boundary condition is imposed. We first establish the well-posedness of the direct problem, employing the variational method, and then extend Isakov's method to prove uniqueness in determining the Lipschitz diffraction grating profile by using point sources lying above the structure. Finally, we develop a periodic version of the linear sampling method to reconstruct the diffraction grating. In this case, the far field equation defined on the unit circle is replaced by a near field equation defined on a line above the surface, which is a linear integral equation of the first kind. Numerical results are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the method in the case when the height of the unknown grating profile is not very large and the noise level of the near field measurements is not very high. Consider the inverse scattering problem of time-harmonic acoustic waves by a 3D bounded elastic obstacle which may contain embedded impenetrable obstacles inside. We propose a novel and simple technique to show that the elastic obstacle can be uniquely recovered by the acoustic far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed modified interior transmission problem on a small domain and makes use of an a priori estimate for both the acoustic and elastic wave fields in the usual H 1-norm. In the case when there is no obstacle embedded inside the elastic body, our method gives a much simpler proof for the uniqueness result obtained previously in the literature (Natroshvili et al 2000 Rend. Mat. Serie VII 20 57–92; Monk and Selgas 2009 Inverse Problems Imaging 3 173–98).

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves by an inhomogeneous medium with different kinds of unknown buried objects inside. By constructing a sequence of operators which are small perturbations of the far-field operator in a suitable way, we prove that each operator in this sequence has a factorization satisfying the Range Identity. We then develop an approximate factorization method for recovering the support of the inhomogeneous medium from the far-field data. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate the practicability of the inversion algorithm.

Consider the problem of scattering of electromagnetic waves by a doubly periodic Lipschitz structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be homogenous and lossless with a positive dielectric coefficient. Below the structure there is a perfect conductor with a partially coated dielectric boundary. We first establish the well-posedness of the direct problem in a proper function space and then obtain a uniqueness result for the inverse problem by extending Isakov's method.
