This paper investigates the oil on canvas painting Boat scene (1974) by Liu Kang (1911–2004), belonging to the National Gallery Singapore (NGS). The focus is on disfiguring paint protrusions in a specific area and colour in the composition. Moreover, in search of the possible factors responsible for the creation of the protrusions, the structure and composition of the paint layers were determined. Three possible reasons were put forward to explain this phenomenon: deliberate textural effects, the expansion of metal soaps and unintentional paint contamination during the artistic process. Investigative techniques such as technical photography, digital microscopy, optical microscopy (OM), polarised light microscopy (PLM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM-EDS) and attenuated total reflectance micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR μ-FTIR) were employed to analyse paint layers, including protrusion samples. The analyses revealed that the protrusions resulted from an unintentional contamination of the oil paint during the artistic process by dry fragments of different pigment mixtures bound in drying oil. Zinc soaps were found in significant concentrations within the protrusions and other parts of the painted scene. Nevertheless, the metal soaps do not pose a direct risk to the integrity of the paint layers at the time of this research. The analyses highlight the potential challenges caused by the protrusions that conservators may face while caring for the painting. The research contributes to our ongoing comprehension of the artist’s working process.

Zinc (Zn) is essential for optimal plant growth and nutrition, while zinc-solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) enhance plant accessibility to zinc by converting its insoluble forms into usable ones. The primary objective of this research was to isolate and identify Zn-solubilizing strains from the onion rhizosphere and evaluate their ability to solubilize different insoluble Zn compounds, including ZnO, ZnCO3, and Zn3(PO4)2. Of the nineteen bacterial isolates retrieved, fifteen demonstrated the ability to solubilize inorganic Zn compounds based on plate assay techniques. The Zn-solubilizing bacterial strains, selected for their qualitative properties, underwent quantitative testing in broth culture using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (FE-SEM-EDS). Seven bacterial isolates with a high capacity to solubilize Zn were identified based on 16S rRNA gene amplification and sequence analysis. These isolates were affiliated with Pantoea eucrina, Pantoea dispersa, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus velezensis, and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Notably, this study is the first to report the potential of Pantoea eucrina as a ZSB. The strain Pantoea eucrina ZSC9 exhibited the maximum Zn solubilization index (8.85) and the highest soluble Zn content (624 mg L−1) among the three insoluble Zn compounds, with ZnO being the most effectively solubilized on the 10th day of incubation in ZnO-enriched basal medium. All bacterial isolates were more effective at solubilizing ZnO than ZnCO3 and Zn3(PO4)2, and this solubilization led to a significant drop in the pH of the broth. Pantoea eucrina ZSC9 showed the maximum pH reduction (3.82) in a ZnO-supplemented medium, indicating a negative correlation between broth pH and Zn solubilization. Seven selected ZSB strains were assessed for their potential to enhance onion growth under pot house conditions. The results showed that inoculating onion seedlings with these ZSB strains significantly improved their growth. Among the strains tested, ZSC9, ZSC10, and ZSC17 were the most effective, enhancing growth attributes such as plant height, bulb diameter, fresh and dry weight of bulbs, Zn uptake by the plant, and overall bulb yield compared to other strains. These findings suggest that these ZSB isolates have great potential as biofertilizers to enhance plant growth and development.

Small metal fragments were found in the tomb of the Wari culture elite (Castillo de Huarmey, Peru). These objects were subjected to chemical analysis using a scanning electron microscope with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and field emission (FE‐SEM‐EDS), an electron microprobe analyser with field emission (FE‐EMPA) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Chemical composition analysis showed that four different alloys were used to make copper objects. Two different alloys were found in silver alloys. The detection of computer-generated document forgeries has always been a challenging task for forensic document examiners (FDE). With the aim to support the examination processes, Schottky field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM-EDS) is explored as a recent tool to analyze black toners obtained from laser printers and photocopier machines. Forty samples each from the laser printer and photocopier machines are procured and studied for morphological features, elemental profile, and multivariate analysis. The acquired SEM images and spectra are evaluated to discriminate and classify the toners having a different source of origin. Multivariate analysis is applied to develop a model of classification to successfully classify the printed documents on the basis of the similarities and differences in their composition. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) discriminates the printouts in the forms of groups based on their chemical composition. The laser printer and the photocopier printed documents are grouped into 11 and eight clusters, respectively, based on their elemental composition. Cross-validation is further conducted to assess the capabilities of developed principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) models for the examination of printouts from unknown origin. Abstract A massive and dense textured layer (ca. 35–50 cm thick) of hardpan was uncovered at the top layer, which capped the unweathered sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings in depth and physically supported gravelly soil root zones sustaining native vegetation for more than a decade. For the purpose of understanding functional roles of the hardpan layer in the cover profile, the present study has characterized the microstructures of the hardpan profile at different depth compared with the tailings underneath the hardpans. A suit of microspectroscopic technologies was deployed to examine the hardpan samples, including field emission-scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (FE-SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). The XRD and Fe K-edge XAFS analysis revealed that pyrite in the tailings had been largely oxidised, while goethite and ferrihydrite had extensively accumulated in the hardpan. The percentage of Fe-phyllosilicates (e.g., biotite and illite) decreased within the hardpan profile compared to the unweathered tailings beneath the hardpan. The FE-SEM-EDS analysis showed that the fine-grained Ca-sulfate (possibly gypsum) evaporites appeared as platelet-shaped that deposited around pyrite, dolomite, and crystalline gypsum particles, while Fe-Si gels exhibited a needle-like texture that aggregated minerals together and produced contiguous coating on pyrite surfaces. These microstructural findings suggest that the weathering of pyrite and Fe-phyllosilicates coupled with dolomite dissolution may have contributed to the formation of Ca-sulfate/gypsum evaporites and Fe-Si gels. These findings have among the first to uncover the microstructure of hardpan formed at the top layer of sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings, which physically capped the unweathered tailings in depth and supported root zones and native vegetation under semi-arid climatic conditions. We report results from FE-SEM–EDS, geochemical, mineralogical analyses and Raman spectroscopy of pottery of bucket-shaped ceramic from Rogaland (southwestern Norway) dated between the 5th and 6th Century. The study reveals a very rare pottery composition including asbestos-group minerals and an unusual enrichment in compatible elements like Cr (8–27 × Post Archean average shale (PAS), McLennan et al., 2006), Ni (2–8 × normal shale) and Co (2–3 × PAS). X-Rray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy could pinpoint that Ni is introduced by specific Ni-rich talc mineral and chlorite minerals and Cr occurs in a rare Cr-rich talc, and possibly in a Cr-chlorite, these minerals are the most abundant in the pottery, which is supported by strong enrichment in Mg (10–20 × PAS). The addition of Mg, Cr, Ni and Co and other compatible trace elements is to our current knowledge not caused by anthropogenic activity but related to the used materials, which are alteration products of mafic and ultramafic rocks or genetically related to mafic and ultramafic rocks. Rocks of this type are exposed in vicinity of the sampling areas in a region called Karmøy, hosting a world famous ophiolite complex, which is identified as the major source for the mafic and ultramafic component, as the next succession of a similar composition is far further north located in Norway and a number of rock types on Karmøy matches the chemical composition of the pottery. The here reported composition is spectacular and extremely rare – if ever found – in pottery. Our study shows that unusual material sources have been used in pottery production, and this opens for discussion whether the materials were deliberately selected by the manufacturers, thereby expressing a specific social function, in a time period where more functional clay types and additives, and certainly functional and sufficient for use in pottery, where abundant in areas of Rogaland closer to where the pots were found.
