Background: Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are established cardiovascular disease (CVD) markers, however accessibility to these markers is less in individuals from low-middle income countries. The non-invasive CVD risk marker especially skinfold measured fat percentages are less explored for its relevance with established serum biochemistry markers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 70 sedentary office workers (aged 30–40 years) who were healthy. Peripheral fat percentages were estimated from four skinfold thickness measurements and biochemistry markers were measured and analysed using standard laboratory measurements. Blood pressure was also measured. Multivariate linear regression models were drawn to establish the association between the non-invasive and invasive CVD risk markers. Results: The skinfold measured fat percentage was negatively associated with the HDL (coefficient β = -0.15, standard error SE = 0.07, p < 0.05). No significant relation between the other biochemistry parameters with the skinfold thickness. Age and BMI were found to be mediating the above relationship. Conclusions: Skinfold thickness derived fat percentage is associated with the few of the CVD markers (especially HDL). Age and BMI are crucial mediating factors for the fat measurement. Skinfold measurements could be included as part of routine primary care screening for CVD risk, alongside invasive biochemistry parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) increases insulin growth factor-1 (IGF1) levels, therefore, monitoring both IGF1 and growth constitutes an acceptable parameter of therapeutic safety and efficacy. We aimed to investigate the relationship between IGF1 level and body composition in children and adolescents undergoing rhGH therapy for growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and idiopathic short stature (ISS). Methods: This observational retrospective study included the bioimpedance analysis (BIA) reports (n = 305) of 135 pediatric patients (age 5–18 years), 64 with GHD and 71 with ISS, conducted as part of routine clinic visits. Sociodemographic and clinical data were extracted from medical records. Generalized estimating equations linear models were used to explore the contributing factors for body composition components of fat percentage (FATP), appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) z-score, and muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) z-score while adjusting for cumulative doses of rhGH. Results: Subjects with GHD exhibited higher body mass index z-scores (p < 0.001), higher FATP and truncal FATP scores, lower MFR z-score, and higher diastolic blood pressure percentiles than the ISS group (p = 0.010, p = 0.027, p = 0.050, and p = 0.050, respectively). Female sex (p < 0.001) and a GHD diagnosis (p < 0.001), were major contributors to higher FATP scores; female sex (p = 0.049) and ISS diagnosis (p = 0.005) were major contributors to higher MFR z-scores; and female sex (p < 0.001), older age (p < 0.001) and higher insulin-like growth factor 1 z-scores (p = 0.021) were major contributors to higher ASMM z-scores. Socioeconomic position and cumulative rhGH dose were not significant contributors to body composition parameters. Conclusion: Children with GHD, including those undergoing rhGH treatment, may be at risk for increased adiposity and associated metabolic implications. Sex- and age-adjusted IGF1 levels were related to muscle mass but not to adiposity. Hence, rhGH treatment aimed at increasing IGF1 levels may alleviate these effects by promoting muscle growth. Abstract During aging, changes in body composition can result in sarcopenic obesity, which is a condition in which obesity occurs accompanied by the loss of muscle mass and strength caused by sarcopenia. Although the effects of obesity and sarcopenia on body composition are known, the muscle-specific strength in older women with sarcopenic obesity remains under-researched. The objective of this study was to evaluate community-dwelling older women for the absence or presence of obesity, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity and compare them in terms of body composition, functional physical performance and muscle-specific strength. One hundred and fifty-six older women (± 74 years) were evaluated for body composition using Dual X-ray Absorptiometry, handgrip strength with a Jamar dynamometer and functional performance using gait speed and timed up and go tests. The presence of obesity, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity was found in 32.7%, 15.4% and 25% of the sample, respectively. Comparing groups, community-dwelling older women with sarcopenic obesity exhibited poorer functional physical performance (TUG ± 14 s), and lower muscle-specific strength (± 1.18). Sarcopenic obesity was associated with muscle-specific strength (95% IC 0.016–0.241), and TUG (95% CI 1.001–1.137). These findings indicate that the combination of obesity and sarcopenia has a negative impact on skeletal muscle, reducing muscle-specific strength and physical performance in older women with more declines than either disease alone. Therefore, this comprehensive assessment gives useful information for incorporating muscle-specific strength into the diagnosis of sarcopenic obesity in the older people.

Background: 3D abdominal lipodefinition is a tool to eliminate localized fat and to enhance muscular definition. The aim of this article is to describe the standardization of defining the abdomen through 3D abdominal lipodefinition, taking into consideration the fat percentage to make the technique happen in a way the results turn out completely natural. Methods: A retrospective study of patients who underwent 3D abdominal lipodefinition by one of the authors (R.V). Patient selection criteria, preoperative markings and technique according to fat percentage, postoperative care, outcomes and complications are described. Results: A total of 285 patients underwent 3D abdominal lipodefinition. The average age was of 33 years (18–45 years). One hundred and fifty (52.63%) of the patients had a fat percentage between 25 and 30%, 92 (32.28%) of the patients had 21–24%, and 43 (15.09%) of the patients had a fat percentage lower than 20%. The average fat volume extracted was of 1600 mL with a minimum of 800 mL and a maximum of 2000 mL. The average surgery time was of 100 min (84–118 min). Twenty-seven (9.47%) complications were observed, 15 (5.26%) had seromas and 7 (2.46%) developed hyperpigmentation on the negative areas. Asymmetries were observed in three patients (1.05%). Conclusions: The standardization of the 3D abdominal lipodefinition technique is a systematic surgical approach associated to a classification dependent on the fat percentage of the patient and their physical build, that allows for results that are natural, according to each patient, reproducible and with a low complication index. Lipin-1 is a member of the evolutionarily conserved family of proteins and is expressed predominantly in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. On the one hand, lipin-1 is an enzyme that catalyzes the dephosphorylation of phosphatidic acid to diacylglycerol (DAG) and thus participates in the metabolic pathways of biosynthesis of storage lipids in the cell, membrane phospholipids, and intracellular signaling molecules. On the other hand, lipin-1 is able to be transported from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and is a coactivator of lipid metabolism gene transcription. It was shown, using the analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associations, that the lipin-1 coding gene (LPIN1) is a promising candidate gene for milk production traits in Holstein and Brown Swiss cows. However, it is unclear how much of its effect depends on the breed. The Yaroslavl dairy cattle breed was created in the 18–19 centuries in Russia by breeding northern Great Russian cattle, which were short and poor productive, but well adapted to local climatic conditions and bad food base. It was shown by whole genome genotyping and sequencing that the Yaroslavl breed has unique genetics compared to Russian and other cattle breeds. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of alleles and genotypes of three SNPs in the LPIN1 gene and to study the association of these SNPs with milk production traits in Yaroslavl cows. Blood samples from 142 cows of the Yaroslavl breed were obtained from two farms in the Yaroslavl region. Genotyping of SNPs was carried out by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Associations of SNPs with 305-day milk yield, fat yield, fat percentages, protein yield, and protein percentages were studied from the first to the fourth lactation. Statistical tests were carried out using a mixed linear model, taking into account the relationship between individuals. We identified three SNPs – rs110871255, rs207681322 and rs109039955 with a frequency of a rare allele of 0.042–0.261 in Yaroslavl cows. SNP rs110871255 was associated with fat yield during the third and fourth lactations. SNP rs207681322 was associated with milk yield for the second, third and fourth lactations, as well as protein yield for the third lactation. Thus, we identified significant associations of SNPs rs207681322 and rs110871255 in the LPIN1 gene with a number of milk production traits during several lactations in Yaroslavl cows.

IntroductionA growing body of evidence suggests that alcohol use disorders coexist with depression. However, the causal relationship between alcohol consumption and depression remains a topic of controversy.MethodsWe conducted a two-sample two-way Mendelian randomization analysis using genetic variants associated with alcohol use and major depressive disorder from a genome-wide association study.ResultsOur research indicates that drinking alcohol can reduce the risk of major depression (odds ratio: 0.71, 95% confidence interval: 0.54~0.93, p = 0.01), while increasing the frequency of drinking can increase the risk of major depression (odds ratio: 1.09, 95% confidence interval: 1.00~1.18, p = 0.04). Furthermore, our multivariate MR analysis demonstrated that even after accounting for different types of drinking, the promoting effect of drinking frequency on the likelihood of developing major depression still persists (odds ratio: 1.13, 95% confidence interval: 1.04~1.23, p = 0.005). Additionally, mediation analysis using a two-step MR approach revealed that this effect is partially mediated by the adiposity index, with a mediated proportion of 37.5% (95% confidence interval: 0.22 to 0.38).DiscussionIn this study, we found that alcohol consumption can alleviate major depression, while alcohol intake frequency can aggravate it.These findings have important implications for the development of prevention and intervention strategies targeting alcohol-related depression.

BackgroundNumerous studies have examined the association between obesity and age at menarche (AAM), with most focusing on traditional obesity indicators such as body mass index. However, there are limited studies that explored the connection between body fat distribution and AAM, as well as a scarcity of Mendelian randomization (MR) studies.MethodsIn this study, we conducted a two-sample MR study to evaluate the causal effects of eight body fat distribution indicators on AAM. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used for primary analysis, while supplementary approaches such as MR-Egger and weighted median were also utilized. Considering that the eight exposures were highly correlated, we performed an MR Bayesian model averaging (MR-BMA) analysis to prioritize the effect of major exposure on AAM. A series of sensitivity analyses were also performed.ResultsFrom a range of 82–105 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were utilized as genetic instrumental variables for each of the exposure factors. After Bonferroni correction, we found that whole body fat mass (β: −0.17; 95% CI: −0.24, −0.11), left leg fat percentage (β: −0.14; 95% CI: −0.21, −0.07), left leg fat mass (β: −0.20; 95% CI: −0.27, −0.12), left arm fat percentage (β: −0.18; 95% CI: −0.26, −0.11) and left arm fat mass (β: −0.18; 95%CI: −0.26, −0.10) were associated with decreased AAM using random effects IVW method. And the beta coefficients for all MR evaluation methods exhibited consistent trends. MR-BMA method validated that left arm fat percentage plays a dominant role in AAM.ConclusionsOur MR study suggested that body fat has broad impacts on AAM. Obtaining more information on body measurements would greatly enhance our comprehension of pubertal development.

Background: The maximal running speed (VMAX) determined on a graded treadmill test is well-recognized as a running performance predictor. However, few studies have assessed the variables that predict VMAX in recreationally active runners. Methods: We used a mathematical procedure combining Fick's law and metabolic cost analysis to verify the relation between (1) VMAX versus anthropometric and physiological determinants of running performance and, (2) theoretical metabolic cost versus running biomechanical parameters. Linear multiple regression and bivariate correlation were applied. We aimed to verify the biomechanical, physiological, and anthropometrical determinants of VMAX in recreationally active runners. Fifteen recreationally active runners participated in this observational study. A Conconi and a stead-steady running test were applied using a heart rate monitor and a simple video camera to register the physiological and mechanical variables, respectively. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that the speed at the second ventilatory threshold, theoretical metabolic cost, and fat-mass percentage confidently estimated the individual running performance as follows: VMAX = 58.632 + (-0.183* fat percentage) + (-0.507* heart rate percentage at second ventilatory threshold) + (7.959* theoretical metabolic cost) (R² = 0.62, p = 0.011, RMSE = 1.50 km.h-1). Likewise, the theoretical metabolic cost was significantly explained (R² = 0.91, p = 0.004, RMSE = 0.013 a.u.) by the running spatiotemporal and elastic-related parameters (contact and aerial times, stride length and frequency, and vertical oscillation) as follows: theoretical metabolic cost = 10.421 + (4.282* contact time) + (-3.795* aerial time) + (-2.422* stride length) + (-1.711* stride frequency) + (0.107 - vertical oscillation). Conclusion: Critical determinants of elastic mechanism, such as maximal vertical force and vertical and leg stiffness were unrelated to the metabolic economy. VMAX, a valuable marker of running performance, and its physiological and biomechanical determinants can be effectively evaluated using a heart rate monitor, treadmill, and a digital camera, which can be used in the design of training programs to recreationally active runners. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of high-intensity circuit training with colostrum supplementation on the body composition and health factors of overweight men. Methods and Materials: 40 healthy overweight men were randomly divided into four groups of exercise and colostrum supplement, exercise and placebo, colostrum supplement and control. The training protocol consisted of three sessions per week for eight weeks. Subjects in the supplement and exercise-supplement group took 20 grams of powdered colostrum mixed with 200 ml of water every other day; then, they consumed them. The variables of fat percentage, blood fat, BMI index and waist to hip ratio were measured in all the subjects before and after supplementation and exercise. Results: The results showed that the percentage of body fat in the supplemental training group was significantly reduced compared to the colostrum supplement and exercise-placebo and control groups. Furthermore, blood fat, BMI and waist-to-hip ratio index showed a significant decrease in the exercisesupplement group compared to the other three groups. Discussion and Conclusion: In general, the interaction of high-intensity circuit training and colostrum supplementation causes a significant reduction in body fat percentage, blood fat, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of fat percentage (FPC) using 1,231,898 first lactation cows and 75,198 SNPs confirmed a previous result that a Chr14 region about 9.38 Mb in size (0.14–9.52 Mb) had significant inter-chromosome additive × additive (A×A) effects with all chromosomes and revealed many new such effects. This study divides this 9.38 Mb region into two sub-regions, Chr14a at 0.14–0.88 Mb (0.74 Mb in size) with 78% and Chr14b at 2.21–9.52 Mb (7.31 Mb in size) with 22% of the 2761 significant A×A effects. These two sub-regions were separated by a 1.3 Mb gap at 0.9–2.2 Mb without significant inter-chromosome A×A effects. The PPP1R16A-FOXH1-CYHR1-TONSL (PFCT) region of Chr14a (29 Kb in size) with four SNPs had the largest number of inter-chromosome A×A effects (1141 pairs) with all chromosomes, including the most significant inter-chromosome A×A effects. The SLC4A4-GC-NPFFR2 (SGN) region of Chr06, known to have highly significant additive effects for some production, fertility and health traits, specifically interacted with the PFCT region and a Chr14a region with CPSF1, ADCK5, SLC52A2, DGAT1, SMPD5 and PARP10 (CASDSP) known to have highly significant additive effects for milk production traits. The most significant effects were between an SNP in SGN and four SNPs in PFCT. The CASDSP region mostly interacted with the SGN region. In the Chr14b region, the 2.28–2.42 Mb region (138.46 Kb in size) lacking coding genes had the largest cluster of A×A effects, interacting with seventeen chromosomes. ESPEN/EASO advocates screening for sarcopenic obesity based on the concomitant presence of an elevated body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. Neck circumference (NC) is another simple and reliable anthropometric measurement for estimating obesity; however, its ability to detect sarcopenic obesity has not yet been established. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between NC and sarcopenic obesity in a Shanghai community population. The study included 1542 participants (622 men and 920 women) with a mean age of 58 years who underwent an examination for the detection of obesity at baseline in 2013–2014 and received a re-examination in 2015–2016. An automatic bioelectric impedance analyzer was used to estimate body composition, and magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure abdominal fat distribution. The definition of pre-sarcopenic obesity combined low skeletal muscle mass adjusted by weight (SMM/W) with obesity which defined according to overall adiposity or fat distribution as BMI ≥25 kg/m2, fat percentage (fat%) ≥ 25% in men and 30% in women, or visceral fat area (VFA) ≥ 80 cm2, respectively. In both men and women, subjects with low SMM/W had a higher level of NC than those without (both P < 0.01). In turn, participants with elevated NC had a higher proportion of pre-sarcopenic obesity in both men and women, regardless of adiposity status assessed by BMI, fat%, or VFA (all P < 0.01). During an average follow up of 2.1 years, for each 1 cm increase in NC, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios of pre-sarcopenic obesity in which adiposity status assessed by high BMI were 1.40 (1.11–1.76) in men and 1.32 (1.13–1.56) in women; in addition, such association remained between NC and pre-sarcopenic obesity assessed by high fat% or high VFA. NC is closely associated with the incidence of sarcopenic obesity, suggesting that it could be helpful for screening sarcopenic obesity in a community-based population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In present study, 50 dairy cows of the local and Holstein breeds were used (34 local cows and 16 Holsteins). Milk samples were collected from 50 cows once every two weeks from the morning milking (to estimate the daily amount of milk, multiply the amount by 2). One-day test to calculate the daily and monthly milk yield. Samples were taken at a rate of 50 ml for each cow, and the proportions of the main milk components (fat, protein, lactose and non-fat solids) were estimated. Blood samples were drawn from cows for the purpose of DNA extraction. Then the DGAT1 gene was amplified using the primers of the studied piece, which was 411 bp in size. The gene was cut using Taq1 restriction enzyme. The results showed the presence of three genotypes: AA, AK, and KK. In terms of the quantity of daily, weekly, monthly, and first stage milk production, the findings also demonstrated that the genotypes AK and KK of the Holstein breed were superior (P< 0.05) than the two genotypes AA and AK of the local breed. While the genotype AA of the local breed was superior to the genotype AK in terms of daily, weekly, and monthly milk production as well as the first stage, it was also discovered that there is a correlation between the genotypes and the chemical components of milk, as the results showed that the genotype AA was significantly superior (P<0.05) by the percentage of fat in the local breed on the AK and KK genotypes of both breeds. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Muay Thai Aerobic Dance (MTAD) on Body Mass Index and body fat percentage and to compare Muay Thai Aerobic Dance (MTAD) with Body Mass Index (BMI) and fat percentage. The study included a sample of 20 overweight students of Rajabhat Mahasarakham University selected by purposive sampling. They were males aged 19 to 22 years who participated in this study. The subjects were divided into two groups. The Experimental Group was assigned to Muay Thai Aerobic Dance (n = 10) and the Control Group practiced activities of daily living (n = 10). The exercise regimen lasted for 8 weeks, comprising 3 sessions weekly, each lasting 60 minutes. BMI and body fat percentage were assessed for both groups before and after the intervention. The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired ttests. The results showed that Body Mass Index and fat percentage decreased significantly at the 0.05 level after participating in the Muay Thai Aerobic Dance program. Hence, it is recommended that the Muay Thai Aerobic Dance program be employed as a weight control strategy for obese individuals to mitigate the risk of obesityrelated diseases. There is a mutual relationship between body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat, and total cholesterol levels in the blood. Maintaining a normal BMI becomes a reference for health maintenance. A higher BMI increases the risk of a higher percentage of fat and cholesterol which contribute to a negative impact on health. This study was conducted to determine whether the BMI, fat levels and total blood cholesterol of sportsmen can be maintained properly. The research involved 323 athletes, ranging from 13 - 46 years with an average of 22 years of age. The participants represented 26 sports fields. The BMI test is done by measuring their weight and height. Fat percentage test was conducted by measuring the total fat of triceps, abdominal, and supra iliac fat, as well as by measuring the width of the upper arm, humeral, and femur. The total cholesterol was determined from the blood sample. All data were analyzed using Excel and SPSS IMB serial 26. Results showed that on average the BMI status was 22.82, meanwhile, the percentage of fat was 18.94 and the total cholesterol was 170.77. There was a high correlation between BMI and the percentage of fat (0.505). However, the correlation between BMI and cholesterol was not significant, and only a low correlation was detected between fat percentage and cholesterol. Context: There is little evidence regarding the joint effect of serum adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) levels and obesity phenotype on the risk of cardiovascular events. Objective: To explore the association between serum A-FABP levels and obesity phenotype defined by fat percentage (fat%) and visceral fat area (VFA), and their joint impact on incident cardiovascular events. Methods: A total of 1345 residents (579 men and 766 women) without previous cardiovascular diseases at baseline, with body composition and serum A-FABP data available, were included. A bioelectrical impedance analyzer and magnetic resonance imaging were used to assess fat% and VFA, respectively. Results: During a mean follow-up of 7.6 years, 136 cases of cardiovascular events (13.9 per 1000 person-years) occurred. Per 1-unit increase in loge-transformed A-FABP levels was associated with an increase in cardiovascular events risk (hazard ratio [HR] 1.87, 95% CI 1.33-2.63). The highest tertiles of fat% and VFA levels were related to higher risks of cardiovascular events (fat%: HR 2.38, 95% CI 1.49-3.81; VFA: HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.09-2.93). The association between A-FABP levels and cardiovascular events was more pronounced in participants with low fat%, regardless of VFA levels. The joint effect of high A-FABP levels and obesity resulted in a greater risk of cardiovascular events. Conclusion: Serum A-FABP levels were significantly associated with the risk of cardiovascular events, and this pattern of association was more prominent among the population with low fat%, which was independent of VFA. Abstract Background Body composition assessment in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is a challenge, specially the fat percentage. There are different methods that can be used to estimate the fat percentage in this population, such as anthropometric equations, but there is still a need to determine which is the best and most accurate. The purpose of the study was to determine the method that best estimates the fat percentage in children from all CP subtypes and levels of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Methods Analytical cross-sectional study in which 108 children with CP diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist were included with any type of dysfunction and from all levels of the GFMCS. Slaughter equation, Gurka equation and Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as reference method, were used. Groups were stratified by sex, CP subtypes, GMFCS level and Tanner stage. Median differences, Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation coefficients and simple regressions were used, also multivariate models were performed. Results The Slaughter equation differed from the other methods in the total population and when it was compared by sex, CP subtypes, gross motor function and Tanner stage. The Gurka equation showed significant differences by sex and gross motor function. Gurka equation correlated positively and significantly with BIA to estimate the fat percentage in all the CP subtypes and levels of the GMFCS. Tricipital skinfold (TSF), arm fat area (AFA) and weight for age index (W/A) showed the highest variability with respect to fat percentage. Conclusion Gurka equation is more appropriate and accurate than Slaughter equation to estimate the fat percentage in children with CP from all subtypes and levels of the GMFCS.

This study aimed to investigate whether body fat and muscle percentages are associated with natural killer cell activity (NKA). This was a cross-sectional study, conducted on 8058 subjects in a medical center in Korea. The association between the muscle and fat percentage tertiles and a low NKA, defined as an interferon-gamma level lower than 500 pg/mL, was assessed. In both men and women, the muscle mass and muscle percentage were significantly low in participants with a low NKA, whereas the fat percentage, white blood cell count, and C-reactive protein (CRP) level were significantly high in those with a low NKA. Compared with the lowest muscle percentage tertile as a reference, the fully adjusted odd ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) for a low NKA were significantly lower in T2 (OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.55–0.86) and T3 (OR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.57–0.95) of men, and T3 (OR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.59–0.99) of women. Compared with the lowest fat percentage tertile as a reference, the fully adjusted OR was significantly higher in T3 of men (OR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.01–1.69). A high muscle percentage was significantly inversely associated with a low NKA in men and women, whereas a high fat percentage was significantly associated with a low NKA in men. Bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive method that can show the distribution of fatty and lean mass of the body. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of BIA on extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) success. Our secondary aim was to determine the factors predicting transition from a single SWL session to multiple sessions. Patients who underwent SWL due to kidney stones were prospectively included. Demographics, pre-procedural BIA parameters (fat percentage, obesity degree, muscle mass, total water and metabolic rate), stone parameters, and number of SWL sessions were recorded. Univariate and multivariate regression analyzes were made to determine independent risk factors for success. Then, the successful group was divided into two subgroups according to their SWL session number as one session or multiple sessions and multivariate regression analysis was made to determine independent risk factors. Stone-free status was achieved in 114 (61.2%) of 186 patients. Stone Hounsfield Unit (HU) (OR: 0.998, p = 0.004), stone volume (OR: 0.999, p = 0.023) and fat percentage (OR: 0.933, p = 0.001) were independent risk factors for stone-free status in multivariate analysis. HU value of the stone (OR: 1.003, p = 0.005) and age (OR: 1.032, p = 0.031) were determined as independent risk factors for transition to multiple sessions in the subgroup analysis of the successful group. Fat percentage, stone volume, and stone density were determined as factors affecting success in SWL. Routine use of BIA may be considered to predict success before SWL. The main objective of this study was to assess the relationship between Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) according to the anthropometric measurements of teaching and research staff (TRS) at the University of Granada (UGR), Spain. This diagnostic, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and observational study was performed on university lecturers (65 women and 62 men) using a correlational descriptive methodology. The lecturers' anthropometric measurements were taken, while MD adherence was determined using the PREvention with MEDiterranean diet (PREDIMED) questionnaire. The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used for measuring HRQOL. Better results for body composition were associated with improvements in the physical and mental dimensions and MD adherence. Statistically significant differences were found between sexes, with men showing higher values for weight, height, waist circumference, BMI, waist/hip ratio (WHR), muscle mass, and systolic and diastolic pressure than women. Similarly, MD adherence was positively correlated with vitality (r = 0.233; p = 0.009), social functioning (r = 0.229; p = 0.008), and the mental component summary (r = 0.205; p = 0.021). The regression model determined that the mental component summary (β = 0.239, p = 0.041), diastolic pressure (PD) (β = −0.473, p < 0.000), fat percentage (FP) (β = −0.241, p = 0.004), and age (β = −0.231, p = 0.022) significantly predicted MD adherence. Fussy eaters may have an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese as adolescents, with fussy eating and weight status also correlating with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Further, maternal and children's weight status relationships are well-established. In this study, we analyzed the body composition of parent–child dyads using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Fifty-one children aged 8–12 years, with an ND (n = 18) and without (n = 33), and their parents, participated in a 7-week food-based Taste Education intervention with 6-month follow-up. The paired t-test was used to compare differences in body composition based on children's ND status. In logistic regression analysis, odds of children being in the overweight/obese or overfat/obese categories increased by a factor of 9.1 and 10.6, respectively, when having NDs, adjusting for parents' BMI (body mass index) or fat percentage (FAT%). Children with NDs and their parents had significantly higher mean BMI-SDS (BMI standard deviation score) and FAT% at pre-intervention than children without NDs and their parents. Mean BMI-SDS and FAT% lowered significantly between time points for children with NDs and their parents but not for children without NDs or their parents. The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between the tendency to aggression and the reaction time, visuo-spatial skill, body mass index (BMI), fat percentage, and muscle mass among university students. A convenient sample of 84 participants (43 males and 41 females) students at Başkent University were recruited using a simple random sampling method weighted for gender from university students who are voluntarily took place in the study. Correlations between variables assesed with Spearman correlation coefficient and diffirences assesed with Mann-Whitney U test. As the total aggression and verbal aggression scores of all participants increased, the number of correct answers in the mental rotation test also increased. It was determined that as the percentage of muscle increased in females, the correct numbers in the mental rotation test increased, but as the fat percentage increased, the correct numbers decreased. In females, as the percentage of muscle increases, their response times to choice visual reaction times accelerate, and as the percentage of fat increases, their responses slow down. The fact that participants with high muscle percentage and low fat percentage were more successful in the mental rotation test suggests that directing individuals to sports can improve their visuo-spatial abilities. It suggests that individuals with a high BMI or fat percentage may have slower responses to the auditory and visual reaction test, resulting in them being slower or unsuccessful in daily activities, alertness, or in activities such as sports competitions. The main aim of this study was to investigate the association between 5 polymorphisms of the interleukin 10 (IL10) gene and body composition parameters in physically active young men. A cohort of 131 young men was enrolled and the following IL10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analysed: rs1518111, rs1878672, rs3024496, rs3024498 and rs3024505. The subjects were divided into groups depending on obesity parameters: body mass index (BMI) and percentage of body fat tissue (fat %). Statistical analysis was conducted for alleles, genotypes and haplotypes, and an association between SNPs and body composition parameters was analysed using four genetic models: dominant, recessive, codominant and overdominant mode of inheritance (MOI). The only statistically significant result in polymorphisms was found for rs3024505 in the over-dominant model with BMI (p = 0.04) and with fat % (p = 0.02). The haplo.score function showed an association between BMI and CCGTA (respectively) haplotype in the additive model (score = -2.00, p = 0.04) and in the dominant model (score = -2.30, p = 0.02). The obtained results indicate a statistically significant contribution of selected IL10 polymorphisms in the regulation of body weight in physically active individuals.

Objectives: this study aimed to identify the effect of a proposed water exercise program on weight, fat percentage and on various body measurements, including chest circumference, waist circumference, and upper arm circumference). Methods: The sample consisted of 10 females aged between 30 and 40 years who volunteered to participate in the study. Subjects were selected using the purposive sampling method to take part in a suggested aquatic aerobic exercise program with progressive intensity, ranging from low to high, lasting 40 minutes, three times per week for 6 weeks duringmthe year 2020/2021. Results: The study results demonstrated that the proposed exercise program had a positive and statistically significant effect (α≤0.05) on all measured variables: weight, fat percentage, and body measurements (chest circumference, waist circumference, upper arm circumference) when comparing between the pre and post measurements. Conclusions: The utilization of the proposed water exercise program proved to be effective for woman aged between 30 and 40 years, resulting in reduced body weight, decreased body fat percentage, and improvements in anthropometric and somatometric measurements (chest circumference, waist circumference, upper arm circumference).

PURPOSE Aquatic training assists in reducing the risk of exercise on joints among children. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of aquatic training for children from the perspective of body composition. METHODS A meta-analysis was performed to determine the potential impact of aquatic training in children. Four databases, namely Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO, were used for the systematic search from September 2010 to November 2021. The mean differences in the data were analyzed using Stata 15.1 software with a 95% confidence interval. Abstract Background Obesity has been recognized as a worldwide growing problem, producing many pathologies including the promotion of “proinflammatory state.” The etiology of human obesity is still only partially understood; however, the genetic background has been proved. Its nature is complex, and currently, it appears that the combined effects of the interactions among multiple genes should receive more attention. Due to the fact that obesity promotes proinflammatory conditions, in this study, we investigated the genetic polymorphism of IL-1 family genes in healthy people with normal and elevated body mass index (BMI) and fat %. Results The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the IL1A -889C > T (rs1800587), IL1B + 3954 T > C (rs1143634), and IL1RN -87G > A (rs2234677) genes alone were associated neither with BMI nor fat % values in tested group. The associations between SNP–SNP interaction and BMI for the IL1B × IL1RN interactions were significant for dominant model (p = 0.02) and codominant model (p = 0.03). The same SNP-SNP interaction (IL1B × IL1RN) was associated also with fat % for codominant (p = 0.01) and recessive (p = 0.002) models. Conclusions This study further confirmed that IL-1 family genes are involved in genetic background of obesity. It has been shown that interaction IL1B × IL1RN was associated with both BMI and fat % with rare T allele protecting form higher values. Thus, even if certain polymorphisms in single genes of IL-1 family cannot be defined as related to obesity in examined population, the genetic interrelationships should be analyzed.

The present work was carried out to determine the influence of lactation rank on the milk yield, fat and protein evolution. Observations were carried out on 117 lactations, as follows: 15 first lactations, 22 second lactations, 26 third lactations, 28 fourth and 26 fifth lactations. It was found out that the average milk yield was 7511.66 kg with the maximum in the fifth lactation (7898.19 kg) and the minimum of 7117.06 kg in first lactation. The differences were highly significant until the third lactation. After the fourth lactation the differences between lactations become statistically no significant, as productive maturity is reached. Milk fat percentage reaches the maximum value in the fifth lactation (4%) with a minimum value recorded in the fourth lactation (3.83%). The average milk fat percentage was 3.94%. Significant and very significant differences occurred for the milk fat percentage between the first three lactations and the fourth and fifth lactations. Milk protein percentage has averaged 3.2%. This parameter is less influenced by lactation rank.

Background: Treated or untreated non-classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH) diagnosed in childhood could pose an increased risk of obesity and metabolic derangements in adolescence and early adulthood. We aimed to explore the interaction between muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) and components of metabolic syndrome in pediatric subjects with NCCAH. Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted in the Tel Aviv Medical Center from January 2018 to January 2022. The study group comprised 75 subjects (26 males) with NCCAH (61 hydrocortisone-treated [21 males] and 14 untreated [5 males]) and 134 healthy sex- and age-matched subjects (41 males) with normal puberty served as controls. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) z-scores were calculated. Stepwise linear regression models were applied to evaluate explanatory variables for MFR z-scores, blood pressure percentiles, lipid profiles, and glucose metabolism. Results: The median age [interquartile range] was 7.5 years [5.3, 8.8] at NCCAH diagnosis and 12.3 years [8.9, 15.4] at BIA. The median cumulative hydrocortisone dose was 7620 mg/m² [2547, 12903]. Subjects with NCCAH had higher mean BMI z-scores and lower median MFR z-scores compared to controls [(0.47 ± 0.97 vs. -0.19 ± 1.04, p<0.001) and (-0.74 [-1.06, -0.14] vs.-0.37 [-0.99, 0.15], p=0.045), respectively]. The linear regression models dependent variables and their explanatory variables were: MFR z-score (R2 = 0.253, p<0.001) - socioeconomic position index (β=0.348, p=0.003), birthweight z-score (β=-0.258, p=0.013), and duration of hydrocortisone treatment in years (β=0.048, p=0.023); systolic blood pressure percentile (R² = 0.166, p<0.001) - MFR z-score (β=-9.75, p<0.001); TG/HDL ratio (R² = 0.116, p=0.024) - MFR z-score (β=-0.300, p=0.024). No significant variables were found for glucose. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with NCCAH have a body composition characterized by an imbalance between muscle and fat tissues, which may place them at increased risk for early-onset cardiometabolic derangements. Abstract Background Exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has been associated with changes in body mass index and adiposity, but evidence is inconsistent as study design, population age, follow-up periods and exposure levels vary between studies. We investigated associations between PFAS exposure and body fat in a cross-sectional study of healthy boys. Methods In 109 boys (10–14 years old), magnetic resonance imaging and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were performed to evaluate abdominal, visceral fat, total body, android, gynoid, android/gynoid ratio, and total fat percentage standard deviation score. Serum was analysed for perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, and perfluorodecanoic acid using liquid chromatography and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Data were analysed by multivariate linear regression. Results Serum concentrations of PFASs were low. Generally, no clear associations between PFAS exposure and body fat measures were found; however, PFOS was negatively associated with abdominal fat (β = -0.18, P = 0.046), android fat (β = -0.34, P = 0.022), android/gynoid ratio (β = -0.21, P = 0.004), as well as total body fat (β = -0.21, P = 0.079) when adjusting for Tanner stage. Conclusions Overall, we found no consistent associations between PFAS exposure and body fat. This could be due to our cross-sectional study design. Furthermore, we assessed PFAS exposure in adolescence and not in utero, which is considered a more vulnerable time window of exposure.

The aim of this study was to determine body composition, body indexes and somatotype in handball players. Forty-eight players (21 men and 27 women) from a university team were evaluated. Anthropometric measurements were performed to obtain fat percentage, muscle mass, body indexes and somatotype. The results showed that the men had 11.82% body fat, with a meso-endomorphic somatotype. On the other hand, 22.49% and mesomorphic-endomorphic somatotype in women. This study aimed to investigate the effect of A and B alleles of beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) gene on milk-related traits in small ruminants by using data reported in 26 potential articles. Records from 9439 genotyped sheep and goats were analysed by utilising four genetic models, including dominant (AA + AB vs BB), recessive (AA vs AB + BB), additive (AA vs BB), and co-dominant (AA + BB vs AB). The effect size of each genotype on daily milk yield, fat percentage, and protein percentage was measured as a standardised mean difference (SMD). The fixed-effects or random-effects model was used to analyse data based on the results of the heterogeneity test. The results showed that B allele of BLG gene positively, but slightly increased the fat percentage of milk in combined data of sheep and goat under dominant (SMD = 0.207, p = .018), recessive (SMD = 0.190, p = .000) and additive (SMD = 0.699, p = .003) genetic models. Also, a statistically significant effect of B allele on daily milk yield of goat was found under dominant (SMD = 0.208, p = .001) and co-dominant (SMD = −0.149, p = .002) models. There was no association between studied alleles and milk protein percentage in sheep and goat. Results of publication bias tests showed a lack of bias and sensitivity analyses suggested additive model as the best one and animals with BB genotype showed highest performance in milk fat production with a SMD equal to 0.699.Highlights Meta-analyses results indicated a small to medium association between BLG variants and daily milk yield in goats The B allele of BLG gene positively affect milk fat percentage in small ruminants The sensitivity analysis suggested additive genetic models for analysing data of fat percentage in small ruminants, based on the absence of outlier studies No association between BLG variants and milk protein was found

Background: Efforts to synthesise existing knowledge concerning the effects of exercise interventions on obesity (i.e. changes in body weight and composition) have been made, but scientific evidence in this matter is still limited. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aims to identify and critically analyse the best available evidence regarding the use of physical exercise as a strategy to attenuate obesity through its effects on adiposity‐related anthropometric parameters in people with intellectual disability (ID). Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines, a literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library through specific keywords up to July 2020. The search adhered to the population, intervention, comparison and outcome strategy. Randomised controlled trials addressing the effects of the exercise intervention on adiposity‐related anthropometric parameters (body mass index, waist circumference, waist–hip ratio, fat percentage or body weight) in children, adolescents and adults with ID were included. The methodological quality of the studies found was evaluated through the PEDro scale. Results: A total of nine investigations with children and/or adolescents (10–19 years) and 10 investigations with adults (18–70 years) were selected, mostly experiencing mild and moderate ID. Methodological quality was fair in 13 of these publications, good in five and excellent in one. Seventeen trials reported comparable baseline and post‐intervention data for the intervention and control groups and were included in the meta‐analysis. In nine studies, the intervention group performed a cardiovascular training programme. Five papers described a combined training programme. Two trials executed whole‐body vibration training programmes, and one publication proposed balance training as the primary intervention. According to the meta‐analysis results, the reviewed studies proposed exercise modalities that, in comparison with the activities performed by the participants' in the respective control groups, did not have a greater impact on the variables assessed. Conclusions: While physical exercise can contribute to adiposity‐related anthropometric parameters in people with mild and moderate ID, these findings show that exercise alone is not sufficient to manage obesity in this population. Multicomponent interventions appear to be the best choice when they incorporate dietary deficit, physical activity increase and behaviour change strategies. Finding the most effective modality of physical exercise can only aid weight loss interventions. Future research would benefit from comparing the effects of different exercise modalities within the framework of a multicomponent weight management intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated the cardiometabolic effects of a 15-week combined exercise programme, implemented in sports clubs, for 50–70-year-olds with low aerobic fitness. In a randomized controlled trial, 45 participants (26 women) with low fitness were randomly assigned (2:1-ratio) to a training group (TG, n = 30) or inactive control group (CG, n = 15). TG had 15 weeks with one weekly 90-min supervised group-based session in a recreational sports club with combined aerobic exercise and strength training and were encouraged to perform home-based training 30 min/wk. Evaluations of relative VO2max (mLO2/min/kg), blood pressure, resting heart rate (HR), echocardiography, peripheral arterial tonometry, body composition, lipid profile and HbA1c were performed at 0 and 15 wks. Average HR during supervised training was 113 ± 13 bpm (68.6 ± 7.0%HRmax), with 4.3 ± 6.6% spent >90%HRmax. At 15-wk follow-up, intention-to-treat analyses revealed no between-group difference for VO2max/kg (0.4 mLO2/min/kg, 95%CI −0.8–1.5, P = 0.519; −3 mL/min, 95%CI −123–118, P = 0.966) or other cardiovascular outcomes (all P > 0.05). Compared to CG, total fat mass (−1.9 kg; 95%CI −3.2 to −0.5, P = 0.005), total fat percentage (−1.3%, 95%CI −2.2 to −0.3, P = 0.01) and total/HDL cholesterol ratio (P = 0.032) decreased in TG. Regular adherence to supervised training was high (81%), but 0% for home-based exercise. In conclusion, the group-based supervised training was associated with high adherence and moderate exercise intensity, whereas insufficiently supported home-based training was not feasible. Together, 15 wks of combined exercise training did not improve aerobic fitness or affected cardiovascular function in 50–70-yr-olds with low aerobic fitness, whereas some positive effects were observed in metabolic parameters. Highlights Combined exercise training implemented in a sports club elicited moderate aerobic intensity in 50-70-year-old untrained individuals. Supervised group-based training had high adherence whereas unsupported home-based training had very low adherence. 15 weeks of low-frequency combined moderate intensity exercise training improved lipid profile and fat mass, but had no effect on cardiovascular fitness. Introduction: Background: many genes have been involved in the development of obesity. Interleukin 32 (IL-32) is a proinflammatory cytokine; rs45499297 is a T/C promoter, single-nucleotide polymorphism of the IL32 gene. Objectives: this study aimed to evaluate the rs45499297 polymorphism and its association with obesity. Another objective of this study was to carry out an in silico analysis. Methods: this study was cross-sectional, and included 333 subjects classified by body mass index and fat percentage. The plasma glucose and lipid profile were measured. We measured serum IL-32 protein by ELISA and the rs45499297 polymorphism by PCR-RFLP. We used several databases to build the IL32 gene network and infer transcription factors that bind to this polymorphic site. Results: subjects underweight and with low fat percentages had lower levels of IL-32. CT genotype and allele C were less frequent in the overweight/obesity group than in the normal-weight group. Interestingly, this result remained only in the male gender. We found that the transcription factors Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor and Specificity Protein 1 bind to this polymorphic site. In addition, we infer that IL32 is involved in metabolic pathways related to viral infections. Conclusion: the TC genotype is associated with overweight/obesity. The decrease in levels of IL-32 observed in underweight and low fat percentage groups could be due to an impaired inflammatory profile. The in silico analysis showed that several transcriptional factors bind at this polymorphic site, and that the enrichment of the metabolic pathways is diverse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective To determine the average body composition (percentage of body fat), the anthropometric markers, and the intensity of clinical pain in women with a clinical diagnosis of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) secondary to endometriosis. Methods A case-control study performed with 91 women, 46 of whom with CPP secondary to endometriosis and 45 of whom with CPP secondary to other causes. They underwent an evaluation of the anthropometric parameters by means of the body mass index (BMI), the perimeters (waist, abdomen, hip), and the percentage of body fat (%BF), which were assessed on a body composition monitor by bioimpedance; the intensity of the clinical pain was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS), and the symptoms of anxiety and depression, using the hospital’s anxiety and depression scale (HAD). Results The groups did not differ in terms of mean age, BMI, %BF or regarding the available waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The mean intensity of the clinical pain by the VAS was of 7.2 ± 2.06 in the group with CPP secondary to endometriosis, and of 5.93 ± 2.64 in the group with CPP secondary to other causes (p = 0.03), revealing significant differences between the groups. Conclusion We concluded that, despite the difference in the pain score assessed between the two groups, there was no difference regarding body composition and anthropometry.
