The demand for plant-based milk alternatives (PMAs) has increased significantly in recent years, whether for health, sustainability, ethical or environmental motives. On the other hand, the dairy industry is under pressure due to factory farming and environmental impact. Furthermore, various reasons such as lactose intolerance or cow's milk allergy are also leading to a larger and broader market for PMA products derived from different plants. This growing interest is accompanied by appropriate marketing strategies for selling the products in the best possible way. Suitable methods for this are placing the product in the supermarket near the cow's milk and labelling that is recognizable and easy for the customer to understand. Nevertheless, the labelling of PMA products with dairy-associated terms should meet different legal basis in the world, so that there is a uniform naming of PMAs. PMAs have different nutritional composition from cow's milk and from each other, which, in combination with the legal situation, has led to a great deal of discussion about the labelling of PMAs. This study presents a review of published data regarding the legalization of these lactate-free plant-based products as well as the naming of these products, with consequences of naming PMAs as milk. Debates about modern beef production suffer from a major historical blind spot. For over a century, the feedlot relied on a closed nutrient loop to sustain soil fertility in the United States Corn Belt. Driven by industrial capitalist urbanization, a cattle-grain-beef complex shaped land use, tenure systems, management practices and environmental politics on the expanding frontier, sacrificing the tall-grass prairies and fracturing agrarian resistance to corporate concentration and the Union Stock Yards. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) emerged after 1950, breaking the nutrient cycle of the original feedlot and turning the relationship between ranching and agriculture into a dysfunctional one. In this paper, the indoor environment of a small-scale high-density controlled environment agriculture (CEA-HD) space was simulated using computational fluid dynamics. Spatial modelling of the indoor environment considering the influential phenomena (e.g. transpiration and photosynthesis) over the indoor temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, and airflow velocity is still challenging. These indoor environment conditions were computed for a 3D model of a CEA-HD experimental space while simultaneously modelling crop airflow impingement, transpiration and photosynthesis. The crops being grown were represented in the model as porous media zones and their exchanges with the indoor air were modelled using user defined functions. The air distribution parameters and configuration were optimized using a simplified 2D model to overcome the steep computational time, and associated cost, of 3D simulation. The objective function of the optimization problem relied on a correlation analysis of the simulation output. The optimization of the 2D model yielded an airfoil configuration that reduced the mean airflow speed and relative humidity variations between the cultivation tiers while achieving higher mean velocities (≈1.9 m⋅s-1) at a lower inlet speed (8 m⋅s-1). The potential of diatoms as aquatic bait, attribute to their abundance in highly unsaturated fatty acids, has been extensively studied. Temperature plays a crucial role in the synthesis of these fatty acids. This study specifically investigated the impact of temperature on the growth, total lipid content, and fatty acid composition of Skeletonema dohrnii, a planktonic diatom commonly associated with red tides andwater blooms in China. The aim is to evaluate its suitability as an aquatic bait and provide insights for large-scale factory farming. Results indicated that the highest biomass and maximum growth rate occurred at 28°C, with no significant deviation from the control group at 25°C. At 28°C and 15°C, there was a significant increase in the total lipid content and the total fatty acid content, with a more pronounced effect at 15°C. At 28°C, EPA and DHA content measured at 0.97 ± 0.01 mg.DW.L-1 and 0.264 ± 0.01 mg.DW.L-1 respectively, surpass those at 15°C due to lower biomass. Conversely, at 15°C, substantial synthesis of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, with EPA constituting up to 32.24 ± 0.24% of the total fatty acids, is observed. Modulating the temperature could optimize the utilization of S. dohrnii as an aquatic feed source. These findings underscore the potential of S. dohrnii as a high-quality aquafeed and lay the groundwork for its success in ocean warming scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) can impair surface and groundwater quality. Bioretention systems are low impact nature-based technologies that can effectively treat CAFO runoff if modified with an internal water storage zone (IWSZ) or amended with biochar. In this study, the performances of four pilot-scale modified bioretention systems were compared to assess the impacts of (1) amending bioretention media with biochar and (2) planting the systems with Muhlenbergia. The system with both plants and biochar amendment had the best performance, with an average of 5.58 log reduction in E. coli and 98% removal of total nitrogen (TN). All systems treated the first pore volume well as new runoff flushed the treated water from the IWSZ. Biochar improved TN and FIB removal due to its high capacity to adsorb or retain ammonium (NH4+), dissolved organic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and E. coli. This article explores the potential for agroecology to bring about transformative changes in US agricultural policy, despite the historical injustices perpetuated by the USDA. It raises questions about whether the USDA can be utilized to advocate for reform and restitution, while also demanding greater protection for farmworkers, animals, cooperatives, and small-scale farmers. The article emphasizes the need for Indigenous and Black leaders to lead USDA transformations and highlights the importance of land reform, fair prices, and addressing corporate influence in agricultural policy. It acknowledges the complexities of engaging with institutions with oppressive histories but argues for the necessity of working towards social transformation while dismantling oppressive systems. The text also discusses the need for changes in agricultural policies and institutions to promote agroecology and food sovereignty, including fair prices, research funding, and data ownership. It calls for the dismantling of power held by fossil fuel and agribusiness corporations and advocates for global reparations to support agroecological restoration. Knowledge of human uses of animals is an important, but understudied, aspect of how humans treat animals. We developed a measure of one kind of knowledge of human uses of animals – knowledge of factory farming. Studies 1 (N = 270) and 2 (N = 270) tested an initial battery of objective, true or false statements about factory farming using Item Response Theory. Studies 3 (N = 241) and 4 (N = 278) provided evidence that responses to a 10-item Knowledge of Factory Farming Scale predicted a reduction in consumption of animal products (rs = −.17- −.27) and approval of political actions aimed at factory farming (rs =.2 –.24). Path models from Studies 3 and 4 suggested that different kinds of knowledge uniquely predicted different outcomes. The Knowledge of Factory Farming scale was a unique predictor of approval of political actions concerning factory farmed animals but not animal consumption. Knowledge of Animals Used as Food predicted animal consumption but not political actions concerning farmed animals. Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are responsible for the production of global greenhouse gases and harmful environmental pollutants including hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and particulate matter. Swine farmers are frequently exposed to organic dust that is proinflammatory in the lung and are thus at greater risk of developing pneumonia, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. In addition to respiratory disease, air pollutants are directly associated with altered gastrointestinal (GI) physiology and the development of GI diseases, thereby highlighting the gut-lung axis in disease progression. Instillation of hog dust extract (HDE) for 3 wk has been reported to promote the development of chronic airway inflammation in mice, however, the impact of HDE exposure on intestinal homeostasis is poorly understood. We report that 3-wk intranasal exposure of HDE is associated with increased intestinal macromolecule permeability and elevated serum endotoxin concentrations in C57BL/6J mice. In vivo studies also indicated mislocalization of the epithelial cell adhesion protein, E-cadherin, in the colon as well as an increase in the proinflammatory cytokine, Tnfa, in the proximal colon. Moreover, mRNA expression of the Paneth cell-associated marker, Lyz1, was increased the proximal colon, whereas the expression of the goblet cell marker, Muc2, was unchanged in the epithelial cells of the ileum, cecum, and distal colon. These results demonstrate that airway exposure to CAFOs dusts promote airway inflammation and modify the gastrointestinal tract to increase intestinal permeability, induce systemic endotoxemia, and promote intestinal inflammation. Therefore, this study identifies complex physiological consequences of chronic exposure to organic dusts derived from CAFOs on the gut-lung axis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Agricultural workers have a higher prevalence of occupational respiratory symptoms and are at greater risk of developing respiratory diseases. However, gastrointestinal complications have also been reported, yet the intestinal pathophysiology is understudied. This work is novel because it emphasizes the role of an inhaled environmental pollutant on the development of intestinal pathophysiological outcomes. This work will provide foundation for other studies evaluating how agricultural dusts disrupts host physiology and promotes debilitating gastrointestinal and systemic disorders. A phenomenology of factory farms and slaughterhouses, as well as associated animal sanctuaries, is mounted. It is found that other animals in the former situations are reified into machine-like beings, as are the workers who deal with them. In terms of critical hermeneutics, it is found that alienation from the process and product of work and from each other and themselves happens for both human and nonhuman denizens of these contexts. In animal sanctuaries, it is found that a contrary movement of "subjectification" occurs. The ethical ramifications of these patterns are that animals become bereft of moral standing in the former institutions and are restored to moral considerability in the latter context. Previous studies have attempted to explain variations in farmland values, but few consider the effect of confined animal feeding facilities (CAFOs) on the value of agricultural land within a certain proximity. Using parcel-level transaction data and fixed-effect models with different specifications on the distance to CAFOs, this study finds a positive relationship between agricultural land prices and CAFOs located within various distances of the parcel sale. With a distance-band specification, the positive effect of CAFOs is more prominent for the 0- to 25-kilometer distance. We also find that the price rises as the nearest CAFO is located closer. Different anthropogenic sources can have a significant influence on bacterial populations and their antimicrobial activities. In this study, the impact of anthropogenic activities on Enterococcus species was studied in an urban watershed in southern California affected by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), recreational activities, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), urban runoff, and control sites. Water samples were collected quarterly for two years for the enumeration of Enterococcus species based on the Enterolert most probable-number (MPN) assay. Concentrations of enterococci were higher in the sediment compared to surface water (4.5 × 106 CFU/g of sediment vs. 2.3 × 105 MPN/100 mL of water). The species diversity was dominated by E. mundtii (32%), E. faecalis (27%), and E. faecium (25%). E. faecium exhibited the highest antibiotic-resistant phenotype. Resistances were mostly to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and tetracycline. Tetracycline and erythromycin resistance genes, encoded by tet (C, K, O, S) and ermB, respectively, were more common in isolates from sediment (42.9%) compared to water (12.7%). E. mundtii was sensitive to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and high levels of vancomycin. A significant percentage of E. faecalis were also resistant to these antibiotics. E. faecium and E. faecalis exhibited resistance to multiple antibiotics. Our data suggest that resistant Enterococcus species within the watershed might provide some useful data to determine pollutant types and sources in that watershed. Therefore, the widespread occurrence and abundance of E. faecium and E. faecalis, and their resistance genes associated with multiple antibiotics may potentially pose risks to the local populations exposed to these water sources during recreational activities. Campylobacter spp. genera is one of the most common causes of microbial enteritis worldwide. This study aimed to find out how common Campylobacter organisms were in raw meat from large livestock in Iran, as well as to determine their antibiotic susceptibility profiles. Several 550 fresh, ready-to-eat meat samples were collected from slaughterhouses, butcher shops, and restaurants in the study region. The samples were collected from cattle (n=138), goats (n=102), camels (n=56), and sheep (n=254). Campylobacter spp. were isolated and identified using normal bacteriological methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Genotyping was performed using PCR to identify virulence genes. The disc diffusion technique was used to determine antibiotic susceptibility. The two Campylobacter spp. were found in 84 (15.27%) of the 550 meat samples tested. Cattle and camel samples accounted for the highest (52.38%) and lowest (3.57%) frequencies of Campylobacter spp., respectively. There were significant differences in the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in cattle (2=43.04 or OR=7.68, CI=3.40-17.30, P<0.01). Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli accounted for 82.14% (n=69) of Campylobacter spp. isolated from raw meat. While C. jejuni was found in 39.28% of the samples (n=33), C. coli was observed in 42.85% (n=36). Other Campylobacter spp. formed 17.85 % (n=15) of the samples. The most common genotypes observed in C. jejuni bacteria collected from different types of large animal samples were ciaB (100%) and flaA (100%). On the other hand, virbll (7.69%) was the C. jejuni strain found with the lowest incidence in different large animal samples. The most frequent genotypes found in C. coli bacteria were ciaB (100%) and flaA (100%). C. coli isolates dnaJ (0%), wlaN (0%), virbll (0%), and ceuE (0%) were detected with the lowest frequency in several samples from large livestock. Campylobacter spp. isolated from different sample types and sources were 100% sensitive to aphA-3-1 and GM10. The isolates were reported to be resistant to E15 (76.93%), cmeB (69.24%), aadE1 (69.24%), CIP5 (69.24%), and AM10 (69.24%). According to this study, Campylobacter was found in food from factory farming. Consequently, the disease can be transmitted by eating raw or undercooked meat. Therefore, proper handling and preparation of meat meals, as well as hygiene measures from the slaughterhouse to the retailer, are critical in preventing Campylobacter infections. Wisconsin has earned the nickname America's Dairyland. While farming has maintained its popularity through the decades, the farms have changed. Small family farms were replaced by large factory farms called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). CAFOs benefit society by making meat and dairy cheaper. However, the factory farms are major polluters and nuisance producers, so the laws and regulations need to be tightened to hold CAFOs accountable. This Comment explores how CAFOs rose to dominance due to Wisconsin's lenient Right to Farm (RTF) law and the potential solutions to the problems from CAFOs. This Comment begins by discussing the history of the RTF law and the growth of CAFOs in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Legislature enacted the RTF, which gave farmers protection from frivolous lawsuits. This enactment likely helped the large farms, called CAFOs, to take over the countryside. Then, the Comment shifts focus to the emerging problems from CAFOs due to Wisconsin's inadequate regulations and concludes by proposing potential solutions to the various problems presented by CAFOs. Research on shifting attitudes or behaviors surrounding the use of animal products traditionally focuses on animal cruelty. How this approach may differ from exposure on the zoonotic disease transmission risk factory farms pose is unclear. The present study sought to examine how information regarding zoonotic disease may stimulate concern for animals/concern for human health, respectively, and thus predict lower willingness to consume meat, when compared with animal cruelty and a control condition. The extent to which such information could shift support for changing conditions on factory farms was also examined. In a preregistered experiment (n = 454), participants were exposed to an informative paragraph on either (a) zoonotic disease transmission risk from factory farming, (b) animal cruelty on factory farms, or (c) a control paragraph. Those in the animal-cruelty condition were significantly more likely to indicate lower meat consumption willingness and higher support for changing conditions on factory farms, when compared with the two other conditions. Concern for animal health and welfare mediated the relationship between the combined experimental conditions and both dependent variables, when compared with the control condition. Upon examining the moderating role of human supremacy beliefs (HSB), a conditional effect was found across all conditions, with higher HSB predicting higher meat consumption willingness and lower support for changing conditions on factory farms. This study offers evidence for the intervention potential of informative excerpts. This paper examines the demand for industrial labor among dispossessed peasants and how the non-absorption of peasants' labor into industrial production intertwined in and around the Bole Lemi industrial park (BLIP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The scores of peasants who were dispossessed to enable the establishment of BLIP were promised to get compensatory jobs. The park's expansion ensures capital accumulation for the companies but produces a 'pile of pain' for the dispossessed peasants. Drawing on fieldwork in Addis Ababa, this article illustrates that the promised transformation of dispossessed peasants' lives from farm to factory and rural to urban lifestyle did not happen. This is due to companies' ignorance of dispossessed peasants' labor because they are illiterate, 'unskilled' and beyond the productive capitalist age as well as companies' preference for employing young women. While rural women migrate to the city for industrial labor, on the contrary, the dispossessed peasants living in Addis Ababa are seasonally 'returning to the farm' as daily laborers in rural areas known for their labor shortages. The peasants become surplus to industrial production due to capitalists'2 preference for employing young women of 'productive age' (roughly between 15-30). As a result, a new precarious peasant class of 'three nos' – no land, no work, and no hope – is emerging. The aspiration, hope and expectation of modernity – city lifestyle, proletarianization and improvement in livelihoods turned into the reality of under/unemployment and migration. This article discusses a case report of severe accidental acute ammonia exposure. The patient, a 54-year-old male, experienced respiratory system dysfunction and required invasive mechanical ventilation support. The patient also suffered from pulmonary edema, irritant-induced bronchospasm, and acute airway blockage, which led to cardiac arrest, pulmonary infection, and septic shock. Sweden's Animal Welfare Act of 1988 stated that regulations and directives within the law should be in favor of animals' wellbeing, protect them against unnecessary harm, allow them to express their natural behavior, and prevent behavioral disorders. However, ethological studies present several welfare problems found in animals held legally in factory farming settings. By using one of Sweden's most commonly slaughtered animals—the pig—this paper scrutinizes how politicians consider different interests while debating animal living conditions in factory farms. The results demonstrate an overall absence of discussions addressing welfare problems in Swedish pig farming. When such welfare issues are addressed, they are often overlooked in favor of interests that cannot directly be associated with animal welfare. Political claims of having the best animal welfare legislation in the world are used when arguing for decreasing as well as enhancing the living conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Closed plant production systems are generally considered sustainable. Such systems are capable of minimizing externalities due to resource recycling. There are two systems, apparently diverging, recently considered as the counterparts of today's conventional agricultural practice: organic farming (OF) and plant factories (PFs). With a strong regulatory background, OF integrates plant production into natural ecosystems by minimizing agrochemical use, while PFs create an artificial environment where all factors can be fine-tuned according to the needs of the crop. In this study, both systems are investigated based on their similarities and constraints; for this, three pillars of production were selected as indicators and reviewed for sustainability based on literature data: I. regulatory background, II. growing media use, III. species use, along with certain socio-economic factors. The reasons for co-existence were highlighted in every aspect. Alternatives for sustainable growing media use are introduced. PF-targeted species selection and variety breeding are necessary to maximize facility utilization. The main barriers to system interoperability are identified in growing media use and regulatory restrictions. The present global processes envisage the trends of the future, such as threats of living ecosystems, plant species allocation, urbanization impacts, agricultural intensification, economics of PFs, local supply chains, education about OF and PFs, consumer acceptance of OF and PF products, and discrepancies in global regulations. British biologist and science populariser J. B. S. Haldane was known as a contrarian, whose myriad ideas and beliefs would shift to oppose whomever he chose to argue with. Yet Haldane's support for synthetic food remained remarkably stable throughout his life. This article argues that Haldane's engagement with synthetic food during the 1930s and 1940s was shaped by his frustration with the status and direction of scientific research in Britain. Drawing upon the Haldane Papers, I reconstruct how Haldane's interest in synthetic food emerged from the biochemical and physiological optimism of the early 20th century. His mid-20th-century writings were an opportunity for Haldane to voice his political opinions. He attempted to erase the conceptual divide between farm and factory, maintained that food shortages were a capitalist construct, and criticised British colonialism. By pointing out the failure of existing economic systems and governments to develop synthetic food, Haldane made the case that food production should be placed under the control of biologists. Agricultural emissions, including those from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) for beef and dairy cattle, make up a large portion of the United States' total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, many CAFOs reside in areas where methane (CH 4) from oil and natural gas (ONG) complicates the quantification of CAFO emissions. Traditional approaches to quantify emissions in such regions often relied on inventory subtraction of other known sources. We compare the results of two approaches to attribute the CAFO CH 4 emission rate from the total CH 4 emission rate derived from an aircraft mass balance technique. These methods make use of the mixing ratio data of CH 4 , ethane (C 2 H 6), and ammonia (NH 3) that were collected simultaneously in-flight downwind of CAFOs in northeastern Colorado. The first approach, the subtraction method (SM), is similar to inventory subtraction, except the amount to be removed is derived from the observed C 2 H 6 to CH 4 ratio rather than an inventory estimate. The results from this approach showed high uncertainty, primarily due to how error propagates through subtraction. Alternatively, multivariate regression (MVR) can be used to estimate CAFO CH 4 emissions using the NH 3 emission rate and an NH 3 to CH 4 ratio. These results showed significantly less uncertainty. We identified criteria to determine the best attribution method; these criteria can support attribution in other regions. The final emission estimates for the CAFOs presented here were 13 ± 3 g of CH 4 per head per hour and 13 ± 2 g of NH 3 per head per hour. These estimates are higher than the inventory of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and previous studies highlighting the need for more measurements of CH 4 and NH 3 emission rates. To improve the water quality of eel intensive culture and the nitrogen and phosphorus reduction in aquaculture tailwater, this research was conducted to isolate and screen the sludge collected from the treatment pond of eel culture tailwater and got a strain of high- efficient aerobic denitrifying phosphorus removing bacteria. It was identified as Acinetobacter tandoii by 16S rDNA sequence identification analysis and named Acinetobacter tandoii PP-1. An experiment on the total phosphorus and nitrate degradation effect of strain PP-1 in the water quality of the Anguilla culture was carried out. The results showed that the total phosphorus degradation rate reached 56. 31% and 81. 82% at 12 h and 24 h hydraulic retention time, respectively. And the nitrate nitrogen degradation rate reached 65. 5% and 90. 37% at 12 h and 24 h hydraulic retention time, respectively. Application research of strain PP-1 in water quality control of Anguilla rostrata factory farming showed that the degradation rate of total phosphorus and nitrate nitrogen with hydraulic residence time at 24 h reached 58. 8% and 56. 1%, respectively. This study showed that A. tandoii PP-1 could help improve the total phosphorus and nitrate nitrogen in the culture water of Anguilla rostrata, and promote the growth of Anguilla rostrata, with good application safety. The contributions to this Special Issue examine multispecies perspectives on the political dynamics of international life. Building on this theme, I consider the complex and manifold ways in which the subject of security can be understood in terms of more-than-human personhood. First, by thinking of more-than-human animals as phenomenally conscious persons, we might better appreciate the multispecies complexity of security as an agentic and affective experience. Second, attending to the spiritual character of certain indigenous articulations of personhood presses us to decipher how spiritual claims might inform moral and legal dimensions of multispecies security-seeking behaviour. To illustrate the significance of these moves, I first draw on more-than-human experiences of war, pathogenic viruses, and the global factory farm. I then explore conceptions of spiritual personhood in the context of Ojibwe responsibilities to protect wolves. These perspectives on personhood demonstrate possibilities for cultivating greater interest in the multispecies experience of security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
