Abstract

This paper reports on the design optimization done for Double Sided silicon microStrip Detectors(DSSDs) to reduce the Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) and to maximize the breakdown voltage and Charge Collection Efficiency. Various isolation techniques have been explored and a detailed comparison has been studied to optimize the detector performance. For the evaluation of the performance of the silicon detectors, a radiation damage model has been included. The neutron fluence is expected to be 2x10^{13}n_{eq} cm$^{-2}$ per year for five years of expected CBM run with intermediate periods of warm maintenance, cold maintenance and shutdown. Transient simulations have been performed to estimate the charge collection performance of the irradiated detectors and simulations have been verified with experimental data.

6. Development of low noise radiation hard sensors and cables for the CBM Silicon Tracking System

Abstract

The performance of Double Sided silicon Strip Detectors (DSSDs) and Kapton cables for the Silicon Tracking System (STS) of the upcoming Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR is being reported. The CBM STS will consist of 8 stations of DSSDs at a distance between 25–100 cm downstream of the target. These DSSDs have a pitch of around 58 µm, stereo angle of ± 7.50 with double metallization on either side. Total integrated fluence is expected to reach 1×1015 n eq cm−2 for some of the STS stations. We present the first 3-D TCAD simulated results on DSSDs using tools from SYNOPSYS. To determine the radiation hardness of these sensors, we have irradiated some of the prototypes at KRI Cyclotron facility. Our radiation damage model implemented in TCAD simulations is able to reproduce the irradiated data. Besides the static characteristics, we have also extracted interstrip parameters relevant to understand strip isolation and cross-talk issues. Transient simulations have been performed to estimate the charge collection of irradiated sensors and the collected charge has been found to exactly mimic the variation of interstrip resistance with bias voltage. Also parameters relevant for noise calculations like metal trace resistance have been measured. For ENC calculations, it is also important to determine the contribution of analog kapton cables since the length of cables could reach up to 50 cm for inner modules. We present the first finite element simulations to extract the capacitive and series resistive noise contribution from kapton cables using RAPHAEL. In order to validate RAPHAEL, we have reproduced the D0 kapton simulations which were done using ANSYS. Present prototype kapton cables have been produced at Kharkov using Aluminum traces. This paper presents a detailed comparison between Aluminum and Copper traces in terms of noise and material budget. Copper seems to be better candidate for metal traces in cables.

Abstract

Results are presented for pion interferometry measurements of 1.8{ital A} GeV Ar+KCl and Ar+La, and 1.2{ital A} GeV Xe + La at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Heavy Ion Spectrometer System. The parameters {ital R}, {tau}, {lambda}, {ital R}{sub {perpendicular}}, and {ital R}{sub {parallel}} are presented for all three projectile-target combinations. The correlation between the extracted size of the pion source and the centrality of the collision is investigated as well as the freeze-out densities and the dependence of the source size on the mean momentum of the pion pairs. The experimental setup and analysis are discussed and comparisons made with the results of others. The phase space covered is at forward angles in the center-of-mass system.

8. At the interface of the immune system and the nervous system: how neuroinflammation modulates the fate of neural progenitors in vivo

Abstract

Neural stem and progenitor cells express a variety of receptors that enable them to sense and react to signals emanating from physiological and pathophysiological conditions in the brain as well as elsewhere in the body. Many of these receptors and were first described in investigations of the immune system, particularly with respect to hematopoietic stem cells. This emerging view of neurobiology has two major implications. First, many phenomena known from the hematopoietic system may actually be generalizable to stem cells from many organ systems, reflecting the cells' progenitor-mediated regenerative potential. Second, regenerative interfaces may exist between diverse organ systems; populations of cells of neuroectodermal and hematopoietic origin may interact to play a crucial role in normal brain physiology, pathology, and repair. An understanding of the origins of signals and the neural progenitors' responses might lead to the development of effective therapeutic strategies to counterbalance acute and chronic neurodegenerative processes. Such strategies may include modifying and modulating cells with regenerative potential in subtle ways. For example, stem cells might be able to detect pathology-associated signals and be used as "interpreters" to mediate drug and other therapeutic interventions. This review has focused on the role of inflammation in brain repair. We propose that resident astroglia and blood-born cells both contribute to an inflammatory signature that is unique to each kind of neuronal degeneration or injury. These cells play a key role in coordinating the neural progenitor cell response to brain injury by exerting direct and indirect environmentally mediated influence on neural progenitor cells. We suggest that investigations of the neural progenitor-immunologic interface will provide valuable data related to the mechanisms by which endogenous and exogenous neural progenitor cells react to brain pathology, ultimately aiding in the design of more effective therapeutic applications of stem cell biology. Such improvements will include: (1) ascertaining the proper timing for implanting exogenous neural progenitor cells in relation to the administration of anti-inflammatory agents; (2) identifying what types of molecules might be administered during injury to enhance the mobilization and differentiation of endogenous and exogenous neural progenitor cells while also inhibiting the detrimental aspects of the inflammatory reaction; (3) divining clues as to which molecules may be required to change the lesioned environment in order to invite the homing of reparative neural progenitor cells.

Abstract

Experiments at the Bevalac using the Plastic Ball and streamer chamber initiated the study of nucleus-nucleus collisions with close to 4π acceptance for charged particles. [l] Much was learned as a result of these experiments, and by the mid 1980s, there was a widespread belief that it would soon be possible to constrain unambiguously the equation of state of the compressed hadron gas that exists for a few fm/c during the early stage of the collision. During the years since then, we have come to a better understanding of the difficulties involved in inferring properties of the nuclear equation of state, and while these difficulties are surmountable, there are some indications that experimental observables are less strongly influenced by the state variables of interest than was initially assumed. [2,3] Such considerations motivate new measurements with good statistics and the smallest possible observational biases.
