Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important precursor of OH radicals which affects not only the sinks of primary air pollutants but also the formation of secondary air pollutants, but its source closure in the atmosphere is still controversial due to a lack of experiment validation. In this study, the HONO budget in Beijing has been analyzed and validated through the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) lockdown event, which resulted in a significant reduction in air pollutant emissions, providing a rare opportunity to understand the HONO budget in the atmosphere. We measured HONO and related pollutants from 1 January to 6 March 2020, which covered the Chinese New Year (CNY) and the COVID-19 lockdown. The average concentration of HONO decreased from 0.97 ± 0.74 ppb before CNY to 0.53 ± 0.44 ppb during the COVID-19 lockdown, accompanied by a sharp drop in NOx and the greatest drop in NO (around 87 %). HONO budget analysis suggests that vehicle emissions were the most important source of HONO during the nighttime (53 ± 17 %) before CNY, well supported by the decline in their contribution to HONO during the COVID-19 lockdown. We found that the heterogeneous conversion of NO2 on ground surfaces was an important nighttime source of HONO (31 ± 5 %), while that on aerosol surfaces was a minor source (2 ± 1 %). Nitrate photolysis became the most important daytime source during the COVID-19 lockdown compared with that before CNY, resulting from the combined effect of the increase in nitrate and the decrease in NO. Our results indicate that reducing vehicle emissions should be an effective measure for alleviating HONO in Beijing.

Taraxacum kok-saghyz (TKS) is one of the most promising rubber plants in the world. The question of how irrigation affects its yields and biochemical composition has not yet been studied well. The effects of irrigation frequency on the growth and yield of Taraxacum kok-saghyz were analyzed. According to the obtained results, it was established that an increase in irrigation frequency (extension of the watering interval) gradually decreased TKS rubber and total sugar yields. With the soil water content increasing from 22.8 to 38.9%, TKS rubber and sugar yields were changing in line with a cubic polynomial equation. Regular watering once every 6 days maintains soil moisture at a level above 28.0%, which makes it possible to increase the yield of Taraxacum kok-saghyz while enhancing the water-use efficiency under the conditions of Northeastern China (Harbin).

Atmospheric pollution in urban regions is highly influenced by oxidants due to their important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and smog. These include the nitrate radical (NO3), which is typically considered a nighttime oxidant, and the chlorine radical (Cl), an extremely potent oxidant that can be released in the morning in chloride-rich environments as a result of nocturnal build-up of nitryl chloride (ClNO2). Chloride makes up a higher percentage of particulate matter in Delhi than has been observed anywhere else in the world, which results in Cl having an unusually strong influence in this city. Here, we present observations and model results revealing that atmospheric chemistry in Delhi exhibits an unusual diel cycle that is controlled by high concentrations of NO during the night. As a result of this, the formation of both NO3 and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), a precursor of ClNO2 and thus Cl, are suppressed at night and increase to unusually high levels during the day. Our results indicate that a substantial reduction in nighttime NO has the potential to increase both nocturnal oxidation via NO3 and the production of Cl during the day.

Comprehensive measurements are vital to obtain big enough datasets for better understanding the complex atmosphere and further improving the air quality. To investigate the 4-year variation of air quality and the influences of special events (Beijing Winter Olympics, COVID lockdown and Chinese New Year) on it during the wintertime in polluted urban air, we conducted comprehensive observations in Beijing, China, during 1 January–20 February, in the years from 2019 to 2022. The mass concentration of PM2.5 and its composition (organics, nitrate, sulfate, ammonium, chloride and black carbon) and the number size distributions of particles (down to ∼1 nm) and ions, gaseous pollutants (CO, NOx, SO2, O3) and condensable vapors (sulfuric acid and oxygenated organic molecules), as well as meteorological parameters, were simultaneously measured. The days before 22 January without any special events in each year were selected to investigate the 4-year variability of air quality. We found that the concentrations of CO, NOx, total oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs), total PM2.5, organics, chloride and black carbon and the number concentration of sub-3 nm particles (N1.3−3) showed similar variations, decreasing from 2019 to 2021 and then increasing in 2022. For SO2, however, its concentration decreased year by year due to the significant emission reduction, further leading to the decrease of gaseous sulfuric acid and particulate sulfate from 2019 to 2022. O3 concentration showed an opposite 4-year variation compared with NOx. Meanwhile, both the oxygen and nitrogen contents of oxygenated organic molecules increased year by year, implying that not only the oxidation state of those compounds increased, but also NOx was involved more efficiently in their formation processes. With higher sulfuric acid concentrations and new particle formation (NPF) frequencies in 2021 than in 2022, and with the lowest concentrations of background aerosols and the lowest ambient temperatures in 2021, N1.3−3 was still the lowest in 2021. Unlike N1.3−3, the ion concentrations in both 0.8–2 and 2–4 nm size ranges were higher in 2021 than in the other years. Then, the days after 4 February were chosen to explore the influence of special events. The non-event days within this date range in 2019 and 2021 were chosen as the reference period. Due to the favorable meteorological conditions together with reductions in anthropogenic emissions, there were basically no haze events during the Olympics. Therefore, CO, NOx, SO2, total OOMs, accumulation-mode particles (N100−1000), and total PM2.5 and its composition were much lower, while ion concentrations were much higher compared with the reference period. Although there was also emission reduction during COVID, especially for NOx, the enhancement of secondary inorganic aerosol formation, together with unfavorable meteorological conditions, caused severe haze events during this period. Hence, CO, total OOMs and all PM2.5 compositions during COVID increased dramatically compared with the reference period. Influenced by SO2, condensation sink and sunlight, sulfuric acid concentration was found to be comparable between the Olympics and the reference period but was lower during COVID and Chinese New Year. Additionally, N1.3−3 was almost at the same level during different periods, indicating that the special events only had little impact on the NPF processes. These results provide useful information to the development of more targeted pollution control plans.

Taraxacum kok-saghyz (TKS) is a promising natural rubber plant. In the current study we investigated effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium base fertilizers on growth and yield of TKS through the field experiments. We found that appropriate application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium base fertilizers can significantly increase root, rubber and total sugar yield of TKS. The TKS rubber yield enhanced significantly when the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium increased accordingly to 107.2, 10.5 and 35.3 g m–2. Maximum accumulation of rubber in the TSK roots is caused by application of potassium fertilizer.According to the obtained results the recommended amount of base fertilizers under conditions of Harbin Experimental Station (N45.592729°, E126.581668°) is 107.2 g m–2 of urea, 43.4 g m–2 of calcium superphosphate, 10.5 g m–2 of potassium chloride.

Measurements of the molecular composition of organic aerosol (OA) constituents improve our understanding of sources, formation processes, and physicochemical properties of OA. One instrument providing such data at a time resolution of minutes to hours is the chemical ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The technique collects particles on a filter, which are subsequently desorbed, and the evaporated molecules are ionized and analyzed in the mass spectrometer. However, long-term measurements using this technique and/or field deployments at several sites simultaneously require substantial human and financial resources. The analysis of filter samples collected outside the instrument (offline) may provide a more cost-efficient alternative and makes this technology available for the large number of particle filter samples collected routinely at many different sites globally. Filter-based offline use of the FIGAERO-CIMS limits this method, albeit to particle-phase analyses, which is likely at a reduced time resolution compared to online deployments. Here we present the application and assessment of offline FIGAERO-CIMS, using Teflon and quartz fiber filter samples that were collected in autumn 2018 in urban Beijing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the offline application with a “sandwich” sample preparation for the over 900 identified organic compounds with (1) high signal-to-noise ratios, (2) high repeatability, and (3) linear signal response to the filter loadings. Comparable overall signals were observed between the quartz fiber and Teflon filters for 12 and 24 h samples but with larger signals for semi-volatile compounds for the quartz fiber filters, likely due to adsorption artifacts. We also compare desorption profile (thermogram) shapes for the two filter materials. Thermograms are used to derive volatility qualitatively based on the desorption temperature at which the maximum signal intensity of a compound is observed (Tmax⁡). While we find that Tmax⁡ can be determined with high repeatability (±5.7 ∘C) from the duplicate tests for one filter type, we observe considerable differences in Tmax⁡ between the quartz and Teflon filters, warranting further investigation into the thermal desorption characteristics of different filter types. Overall, this study provides a basis for expanding OA molecular characterization by FIGAERO-CIMS to situations where and when deployment of the instrument itself is not possible.

Thermal healing of focused ion beam-implanted defects in GaN is investigated by off-axis electron holography in TEM. The data reveal that healing starts at temperatures as low as about 250 °C. The healing processes result in an irreversible transition from defect-induced Fermi level pinning near the VB toward a midgap pinning induced by the crystalline-amorphous transition interface. Based on the measured pinning levels and the defect charge states, we identify the dominant defect type to be substitutional carbon on nitrogen sites.

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, the dramatic reduction of anthropogenic emissions provided a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of reduced anthropogenic activity and primary emissions on atmospheric chemical processes and the consequent formation of secondary pollutants. Here, we utilize comprehensive observations to examine the response of atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) to the changes in the atmospheric chemical cocktail. We find that the main clustering process was unaffected by the drastically reduced traffic emissions, and the formation rate of 1.5 nm particles remained unaltered. However, particle survival probability was enhanced due to an increased particle growth rate (GR) during the lockdown period, explaining the enhanced NPF activity in earlier studies. For GR at 1.5–3 nm, sulfuric acid (SA) was the main contributor at high temperatures, whilst there were unaccounted contributing vapors at low temperatures. For GR at 3–7 and 7–15 nm, oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) played a major role. Surprisingly, OOM composition and volatility were insensitive to the large change of atmospheric NOx concentration; instead the associated high particle growth rates and high OOM concentration during the lockdown period were mostly caused by the enhanced atmospheric oxidative capacity. Overall, our findings suggest a limited role of traffic emissions in NPF.

Oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) are crucial for atmospheric new particle formation and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) growth. Therefore, understanding their chemical composition, temporal behavior, and sources is of great importance. Previous studies on OOMs mainly focus on environments where biogenic sources are predominant, yet studies on sites with dominant anthropogenic emissions, such as megacities, have been lacking. Here, we conducted long-term measurements of OOMs, covering four seasons of the year 2019, in urban Beijing. The OOM concentration was found to be the highest in summer (1.6×108 cm−3), followed by autumn (7.9×107 cm−3), spring (5.7×107 cm−3) and winter (2.3×107 cm−3), suggesting that enhanced photo-oxidation together with the rise in temperature promote the formation of OOMs. Most OOMs contained 5 to 10 carbon atoms and 3 to 7 effective oxygen atoms (nOeff=nO-2×nN). The average nOeff increased with increasing atmospheric photo-oxidation capacity, which was the highest in summer and the lowest in winter and autumn. By performing a newly developed workflow, OOMs were classified into the following four types: aromatic OOMs, aliphatic OOMs, isoprene OOMs, and monoterpene OOMs. Among them, aromatic OOMs (29 %–41 %) and aliphatic OOMs (26 %–41 %) were the main contributors in all seasons, indicating that OOMs in Beijing were dominated by anthropogenic sources. The contribution of isoprene OOMs increased significantly in summer (33 %), which is much higher than those in the other three seasons (8 %–10 %). Concentrations of isoprene (0.2–5.3×107 cm−3) and monoterpene (1.1–8.4×106 cm−3) OOMs in Beijing were lower than those reported at other sites, and they possessed lower oxygen and higher nitrogen contents due to high NOx levels (9.5–38.3 ppbv – parts per billion by volume) in Beijing. With regard to the nitrogen content of the two anthropogenic OOMs, aromatic OOMs were mainly composed of CHO and CHON species, while aliphatic OOMs were dominated by CHON and CHON2 ones. Such prominent differences suggest varying formation pathways between these two OOMs. By combining the measurements and an aerosol dynamic model, we estimated that the SOA growth rate through OOM condensation could reach 0.64, 0.61, 0.41, and 0.30 µg m−3 h−1 in autumn, summer, spring, and winter, respectively. Despite the similar concentrations of aromatic and aliphatic OOMs, the former had lower volatilities and, therefore, showed higher contributions (46 %–62 %) to SOA than the latter (14 %–32 %). By contrast, monoterpene OOMs and isoprene OOMs, limited by low abundances or high volatilities, had low contributions of 8 %–12 % and 3 %–5 %, respectively. Overall, our results improve the understanding of the concentration, chemical composition, seasonal variation, and potential atmospheric impacts of OOMs, which can help formulate refined restriction policy specific to SOA control in urban areas.

Co-occurrences of high concentrations of PM2.5 and ozone (O3) have been frequently observed in haze-aggravating processes in the North China Plain (NCP) over the past few years. Higher O3 concentrations on hazy days were hypothesized to be related to nitrous acid (HONO), but the key sources of HONO enhancing O3 during haze-aggravating processes remain unclear. We added six potential HONO sources, i.e., four ground-based (traffic, soil, and indoor emissions, and the NO2 heterogeneous reaction on ground surface (Hetground)) sources, and two aerosol-related (the NO2 heterogeneous reaction on aerosol surfaces (Hetaerosol) and nitrate photolysis (Photnitrate)) sources into the WRF-Chem model and designed 23 simulation scenarios to explore the unclear key sources. The results indicate that ground-based HONO sources producing HONO enhancements showed a rapid decrease with height, while the NO + OH reaction and aerosol-related HONO sources decreased slowly with height. Photnitrate contributions to HONO concentrations were enhanced with aggravated pollution levels. The enhancement of HONO due to Photnitrate on hazy days was about 10 times greater than on clean days and Photnitrate dominated daytime HONO sources (∼ 30 %–70 % when the ratio of the photolysis frequency of nitrate (Jnitrate) to gas nitric acid (JHNO3) equals 30) at higher layers (>800 m). Compared with that on clean days, the Photnitrate contribution to the enhanced daily maximum 8 h averaged (DMA8) O3 was increased by over 1 magnitude during the haze-aggravating process. Photnitrate contributed only ∼ 5 % of the surface HONO in the daytime with a Jnitrate/JHNO3 ratio of 30 but contributed ∼ 30 %–50 % of the enhanced O3 near the surface in NCP on hazy days. Surface O3 was dominated by volatile organic compound-sensitive chemistry, while O3 at higher altitudes (>800 m) was dominated by NOx-sensitive chemistry. Photnitrate had a limited impact on nitrate concentrations (<15 %) even with a Jnitrate/JHNO3 ratio of 120. These results suggest the potential but significant impact of Photnitrate on O3 formation, and that more comprehensive studies on Photnitrate in the atmosphere are still needed.

Organic aerosol (OA) is a major component of fine particulate matter (PM), affecting air quality, human health, and the climate. The absorptive and reflective behavior of OA components contributes to determining particle optical properties and thus their effects on the radiative budget of the troposphere. There is limited knowledge on the influence of the molecular composition of OA on particle optical properties in the polluted urban environment. In this study, we characterized the molecular composition of oxygenated OA collected on filter samples in the autumn of 2018 in Beijing, China, with a filter inlet for gases and aerosols coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO–CIMS). Three haze episodes occurred during our sampling period with daily maximum concentrations of OA of 50, 30, and 55 µg m−3. We found that the signal intensities of dicarboxylic acids and sulfur-containing compounds increased during the two more intense haze episodes, while the relative contributions of wood-burning markers and other aromatic compounds were enhanced during the cleaner periods. We further assessed the optical properties of oxygenated OA components by combining detailed chemical composition measurements with collocated particle light absorption measurements. We show that light absorption enhancement (Eabs) of black carbon (BC) was mostly related to more oxygenated OA (e.g., dicarboxylic acids), likely formed in aqueous-phase reactions during the intense haze periods with higher relative humidity, and speculate that they might contribute to lensing effects. Aromatics and nitro-aromatics (e.g., nitrocatechol and its derivatives) were mostly related to a high light absorption coefficient (babs) consistent with light-absorbing (brown) carbon (BrC). Our results provide information on oxygenated OA components at the molecular level associated with BrC and BC particle light absorption and can serve as a basis for further studies on the effects of anthropogenic OA on radiative forcing in the urban environment.

Although the anthropogenic emissions of SO2 have decreased significantly in China, the decrease in SO42- in PM2.5 is much smaller than that of SO2. This implies an enhanced formation rate of SO42- in the ambient air, and the mechanism is still under debate. This work investigated the formation mechanism of particulate sulfate based on statistical analysis of long-term observations in Shijiazhuang and Beijing supported with flow tube experiments. Our main finding was that the sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) was exponentially correlated with ambient RH in Shijiazhuang (SOR = 0.15+0.0032×exp⁡(RH/16.2)) and Beijing (SOR = -0.045+0.12×exp⁡(RH/37.8)). In Shijiazhuang, the SOR is linearly correlated with the ratio of aerosol water content (AWC) in PM2.5 (SOR = 0.15+0.40×AWC/PM2.5). Our results suggest that uptake of SO2 instead of oxidation of S(IV) in the particle phase is the rate-determining step for sulfate formation. NH4NO3 plays an important role in the AWC and the change of particle state, which is a crucial factor determining the uptake kinetics of SO2 and the enhanced SOR during haze days. Our results show that NH3 significantly promoted the uptake of SO2 and subsequently the SOR, while NO2 had little influence on SO2 uptake and SOR in the presence of NH3.

Climate change and global warming strongly impact the cryosphere. The rise of air temperature and change of precipitation patterns lead to dramatic responses of snow and ice heat and mass balance. Sustainable field observations on lake air–snow–ice–water temperature regime have been carried out in Lake Orajärvi in the vicinity of the Finnish Space Centre, a Flagship Supersite in Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland since 2009. A thermistor-string-based snow and ice mass balance buoy called “Snow and ice mass balance apparatus (SIMBA)” was deployed in the lake at the beginning of each ice season. In this paper, we describe snow and ice temperature regimes, snow depth, ice thickness, and ice compositions retrieved from SIMBA observations as well as meteorological variables based on high-quality observations at the Finnish Space Centre. Ice thickness in Lake Orajärvi showed an increasing trend. During the decade of data collection (1) the November–May mean air temperature had an increasing trend of 0.16 ∘C per year, and the interannual variations were highly correlated (r = 0.93) with the total seasonal accumulated precipitation; (2) the maximum granular ice thickness ranged from 15 % to 80 % of the maximum total ice thickness; and (3) the snow depth on lake ice was not correlated (r = 0.21) with the total precipitation. The data set can be applied to investigate the lake ice surface heat balance and the role of snow in lake ice mass balance and to improve the parameterization of snow to ice transformation in snow and ice models. Despite the numerous studies investigating haze formation mechanism in China, it is still puzzling that intensive haze episodes could form within hours directly following relatively clean periods. Haze has been suggested to be initiated by the variation of meteorological parameters and then to be substantially enhanced by aerosol–radiation–boundary layer feedback. However, knowledge on the detailed chemical processes and the driving factors for extensive aerosol mass accumulation during the feedback is still scarce. Here, the dependency of the aerosol number size distribution, mass concentration and chemical composition on the daytime mixing layer height (MLH) in urban Beijing is investigated. The size distribution and chemical composition-resolved dry aerosol light extinction is also explored. The results indicate that the aerosol mass concentration and fraction of nitrate increased dramatically when the MLH decreased from high to low conditions, corresponding to relatively clean and polluted conditions, respectively. Particles having their dry diameters in the size of ∼400–700 nm, and especially particle-phase ammonium nitrate and liquid water, contributed greatly to visibility degradation during the winter haze periods. The dependency of aerosol composition on the MLH revealed that ammonium nitrate and aerosol water content increased the most during low MLH conditions, which may have further triggered enhanced formation of sulfate and organic aerosol via heterogeneous reactions. As a result, more sulfate, nitrate and water-soluble organics were formed, leading to an enhanced water uptake ability and increased light extinction by the aerosols. The results of this study contribute towards a more detailed understanding of the aerosol–chemistry–radiation–boundary layer feedback that is likely to be responsible for explosive aerosol mass growth events in urban Beijing.

Gaseous hydrochloric (HCl) and hydrobromic acid (HBr) are vital halogen species that play essential roles in tropospheric physicochemical processes. Yet, the majority of the current studies on these halogen species were conducted in marine or coastal areas. Detection and source identification of HCl and HBr in inland urban areas remain scarce, thus limiting the full understanding of halogen chemistry and potential atmospheric impacts in the environments with limited influence from the marine sources. Here, both gaseous HCl and HBr were concurrently measured in urban Beijing, China, during winter and early spring of 2019. We observed significant HCl and HBr concentrations ranging from a minimum value at 1 × 108 molecules cm−3 (4 ppt) and 4 × 107 molecules cm−3 (1 ppt) up to 6 × 109 molecules cm−3 (222 ppt) and 1 × 109 molecules cm−3 (37 ppt), respectively. The HCl and HBr concentrations are enhanced along with the increase of atmospheric temperature, UVB and levels of gaseous HNO3. Based on the air mass analysis and high correlations of HCl and HBr with the burning indicators (HCN and HCNO), gaseous HCl and HBr are found to be related to anthropogenic burning aerosols. The gas–particle partitioning may also play a dominant role in the elevated daytime HCl and HBr. During the daytime, the reactions of HCl and HBr with OH radicals lead to significant production of atomic Cl and Br, up to 2 × 104 molecules cm−3 s−1 and 8 × 104 molecules cm−3 s−1, respectively. The production rate of atomic Br (via HBr + OH) is 2–3 times higher than that of atomic Cl (via HCl + OH), highlighting the potential importance of bromine chemistry in the urban area. On polluted days, the production rates of atomic Cl and Br are faster than those on clean days. Furthermore, our observations of elevated HCl and HBr may suggest an important recycling pathway of halogen species in inland megacities and may provide a plausible explanation for the widespread halogen chemistry, which could affect the atmospheric oxidation in China.

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

To examine the possible miRNA molecular regulatory mechanisms during maternal uterine involution after delivery, we selected ovary and uterus tissues that are structurally connected as experimental materials. We employed Illumina HiSeq sequencing to screen and analyze the quantity and characteristics of miRNA in postpartum ewes in the methylergometrine-treated group and physiological saline control group. Results showed that 16 miRNAs were identified in the ovary libraries, including 4 known miRNAs and 12 novel miRNAs. In the uterus libraries, 54 miRNAs were identified, which included 5 known miRNAs and 49 novel miRNAs. At the same time, target gene prediction, GO annotation, and KEGG signaling pathway enrichment analysis were employed. We found that maternal uterine involution after delivery may involve two miRNA-target gene pairs, i.e., miRNA-200a-ZEB1 and YAP1. The YAP1/Hippo signaling pathway is used to construct an ovary–uterine axial regulatory mechanism to regulate the restoration of postpartum maternal uterine morphology and function. In view of this, the identification of miRNAs with significant differences in this study fills a gap in research on miRNAs associated with regulation of postpartum uterine recovery in ewes and provided an important reference for comprehensive understanding and in-depth research on the regulatory molecular network mechanism for postpartum uterine involution in small ruminants.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are widely expressed in different mammalian tissues and exert their biological effects through corresponding target genes. miRNA target genes can be rapidly and efficiently identified and screened by combining bioinformatics prediction and experimental validation. To investigate the possible molecular regulatory mechanisms involving miRNAs during uterine involution in postpartum ewes, we used Illumina HiSeq sequencing technology to screen for the number and characteristics of miRNAs in faster uterine involution and normal uterine involution group. A total of 118 differentially expressed miRNAs, including 33 known miRNAs and 85 new miRNAs, were identified in the hypothalamic library, whereas 54 miRNAs, including 5 known miRNAs and 49 new miRNAs, were identified in the uterine library. Screening with four types of gene prediction software revealed 73 target genes associated with uterine involution, and subsequently, GO annotation and KEGG pathway analysis were performed. The results showed that, in the hypothalamic–uterine axis, uterine involution in postpartum ewes might primarily involve two miRNA-target gene pairs, namely, miRNA-200a–PTEN and miRNA-133–FGFR1, which can participate in GnRH signal transduction in the upstream hypothalamus and in the remodeling process at the downstream uterus, through the PI3K–AKT signaling pathway to influence the recovery of the morphology and functions of the uterus during the postpartum period in sheep. Therefore, identification of differentially expressed miRNAs in this study fills a gap in the research related to miRNAs in uterine involution in postpartum ewes and provides an important reference point for a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of postpartum uterine involution in female livestock.

Water-soluble inorganic ions such as ammonium, nitrate and sulfate are major components of fine aerosols in the atmosphere and are widely used in the estimation of aerosol acidity. However, different experimental practices and instrumentation may lead to uncertainties in ion concentrations. Here, an intercomparison experiment was conducted in 10 different laboratories (labs) to investigate the consistency of inorganic ion concentrations and resultant aerosol acidity estimates using the same set of aerosol filter samples. The results mostly exhibited good agreement for major ions Cl−, SO42-, NO3-, NH4+ and K+. However, F−, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were observed with more variations across the different labs. The Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) data of nonrefractory SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ generally correlated very well with the filter-analysis-based data in our study, but the absolute concentrations differ by up to 42 %. Cl− from the two methods are correlated, but the concentration differ by more than a factor of 3. The analyses of certified reference materials (CRMs) generally showed a good detection accuracy (DA) of all ions in all the labs, the majority of which ranged between 90 % and 110 %. The DA was also used to correct the ion concentrations to showcase the importance of using CRMs for calibration check and quality control. Better agreements were found for Cl−, SO42-, NO3-, NH4+ and K+ across the labs after their concentrations were corrected with DA; the coefficient of variation (CV) of Cl−, SO42-, NO3-, NH4+ and K+ decreased by 1.7 %, 3.4 %, 3.4 %, 1.2 % and 2.6 %, respectively, after DA correction. We found that the ratio of anion to cation equivalent concentrations (AE / CE) and ion balance (anions–cations) are not good indicators for aerosol acidity estimates, as the results in different labs did not agree well with each other. In situ aerosol pH calculated from the ISORROPIA II thermodynamic equilibrium model with measured ion and ammonia concentrations showed a similar trend and good agreement across the 10 labs. Our results indicate that although there are important uncertainties in aerosol ion concentration measurements, the estimated aerosol pH from the ISORROPIA II model is more consistent.

Although secondary particulate matter is reported to be the main contributor of PM2.5 during haze in Chinese megacities, primary particle emissions also affect particle concentrations. In order to improve estimates of the contribution of primary sources to the particle number and mass concentrations, we performed source apportionment analyses using both chemical fingerprints and particle size distributions measured at the same site in urban Beijing from April to July 2018. Both methods resolved factors related to primary emissions, including vehicular emissions and cooking emissions, which together make up 76 % and 24 % of total particle number and organic aerosol (OA) mass, respectively. Similar source types, including particles related to vehicular emissions (1.6±1.1 µg m−3; 2.4±1.8×103 cm−3 and 5.5±2.8×103 cm−3 for two traffic-related components), cooking emissions (2.6±1.9 µg m−3 and 5.5±3.3×103 cm−3) and secondary aerosols (51±41 µg m−3 and 4.2±3.0×103 cm−3), were resolved by both methods. Converted mass concentrations from particle size distributions components were comparable with those from chemical fingerprints. Size distribution source apportionment separated vehicular emissions into a component with a mode diameter of 20 nm (“traffic-ultrafine”) and a component with a mode diameter of 100 nm (“traffic-fine”). Consistent with similar day- and nighttime diesel vehicle PM2.5 emissions estimated for the Beijing area, traffic-fine particles, hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA, traffic-related factor resulting from source apportionment using chemical fingerprints) and black carbon (BC) showed similar diurnal patterns, with higher concentrations during the night and morning than during the afternoon when the boundary layer is higher. Traffic-ultrafine particles showed the highest concentrations during the rush-hour period, suggesting a prominent role of local gasoline vehicle emissions. In the absence of new particle formation, our results show that vehicular-related emissions (14 % and 30 % for ultrafine and fine particles, respectively) and cooking-activity-related emissions (32 %) dominate the particle number concentration, while secondary particulate matter (over 80 %) governs PM2.5 mass during the non-heating season in Beijing.

Secondary aerosols are a major component of PM2.5, yet their formation mechanisms in the ambient atmosphere are still unclear. Based on field measurements in downtown Beijing, we show that the photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) may promote the formation of organic and nitrate aerosols in winter in Beijing, which is supported by the fact that the mass concentrations of organic and nitrate aerosols linearly increase as a function of HONO consumed from early morning to noon. The increased nitrate content also leads to the formation of ammonium particulate matter through enhancing the neutralization of nitrate and sulfate by ammonia. We further illustrate that during pollution events in winter in Beijing, over 50 % of the ambient HONO may be related to traffic-related emissions, including direct emissions and formation via the reaction between OH and vehicle-emitted NO. Overall, our results indicate that traffic-related HONO may play an important role in the oxidative capacity and in turn contribute to haze formation in winter in Beijing. The mitigation of HONO and NOx emissions from vehicles may be an effective way to reduce the formation of secondary aerosols and severe haze events in winter in Beijing.

The 2006–2007 El Niño event, an unusually weak event, was predicted by most models only after the warming in the eastern Pacific had commenced. In this study, on the basis of an El Niño prediction system, roles of the initial ocean surface and subsurface states on predicting the 2006–2007 El Niño event are investigated to determine conditions favorable for predicting El Niño growth and are isolated in three sets of hindcast experiments. The hindcast is initialized through assimilation of only the sea surface temperature (SST) observations to optimize the initial surface condition, only the sea level (SL) data to update the initial subsurface state, or both the SST and SL data. Results highlight that the hindcasts with three different initial states can all successfully predict the 2006–2007 El Niño event 1 year in advance and that the hindcast initialized by both the SST and SL data performs best. A comparison between the various sets of hindcast results further demonstrates that successful prediction is more significantly affected by the initial subsurface state than by the initial surface condition. The accurate initial surface state can trigger the easier prediction of the 2006–2007 El Niño, whereas a more reasonable initial subsurface state can contribute to improving the prediction in the growth of the warm event.
