Environmental stability remains a major challenge for the commercialisation of organic solar cells and degradation pathways remain poorly understood. Designing materials for improved device stability requires an understanding of the relationship between the properties of the donor or acceptor molecule and different degradation mechanisms. Here we study the correlations between various molecular parameters of the fullerene derivative bis-PCBM and the degradation rate of polymer:bis-PCBM organic solar cells, based on the same carbazole-alt-benzothiadiazole polymer, in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. We compare eight high purity bis-PCBM isomers with different electronic, chemical and packing properties along with PCBM and the mixture of bis isomers. In the case of aerobic photodegradation, we find that device degradation rate is positively correlated to the LUMO energy of the bis-PCBM isomer and to the degree of crystallinity of the isomer, while the correlation of degradation with driving force for epoxide formation is unclear. These results support the idea that in these samples, aerobic photodegradation proceeds via superoxide formation by the photogenerated polaron on the fullerene, followed by further chemical reaction. In the absence of air, photodegradation rate is correlated with molecular structure, supporting the mechanism of microstructural degradation via fullerene dimerization. The approach and findings presented here show how control of specific molecular parameters through chemical design can serve as a strategy to enhance stability of organic solar cells.

Despite being a critical molecule in the brain, mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of cholesterol has been under-reported compared to other lipids due to the difficulty in ionizing the sterol molecule. In the present work, we have employed an on-tissue enzyme-assisted derivatization strategy to improve detection of cholesterol in brain tissue sections. We report distribution and levels of cholesterol across specific structures of the mouse brain, in a model of Niemann-Pick type C1 disease, and during brain development. MSI revealed that in the adult mouse, cholesterol is the highest in the pons and medulla and how its distribution changes during development. Cholesterol was significantly reduced in the corpus callosum and other brain regions in the Npc1 null mouse, confirming hypomyelination at the molecular level. Our study demonstrates the potential of MSI to the study of sterols in neuroscience.

Citizen science, a practice of public participation in scientific projects, is popular in Western countries, however, it is still a relatively novel approach in Southeast Europe. In this region, citizen science can be a useful tool for increasing the understanding of alien species. One such species is the sculptured resin bee, Megachile sculpturalis, a putatively invasive alien pollinator native to East Asia. It was introduced to France in 2008, from where it quickly spread across West and Central Europe. However, our knowledge of its eastern distribution is scarce since it is based mostly on isolated findings. We combined citizen science and data extraction from online sources (e.g., naturalist’s databases and social media) covering 6 years, and 3 years of targeted floral resource monitoring in the search for M. sculpturalis across regions of southeastern Europe. We collected presence data and information on M. sculpturalis abundances across an urban-rural gradient from eight countries: Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, and the region of the Crimean Peninsula. We present the first country records for Romania, Bulgaria, and Montenegro, identify the dynamic expansion front in southern Serbia and provide new southernmost occurrences in Southeast Europe. We also collected data on species ecology (e.g., phenology, pollen/nectar sources, nest characteristics) and gathered evidence of reproducing populations of this species across the studied region. Citizen science data provided a five times larger spatial coverage, including recordings from remote locations, than the data collected by expert field surveys and provided critical additional data about the species biology, thanks to exceptionally engaged participants. We emphasize the importance of close collaboration between regional scientist teams and citizen participants and the benefits of this approach for monitoring a species with a continent-wide spread potential.

Nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) dominate organic photovoltaic (OPV) research due to their promising efficiencies and stabilities. However, there is very little investigation into the molecular processes of degradation, which is critical to guiding design of novel NFAs for long‐lived, commercially viable OPVs. Here, the important role of molecular structure and conformation in NFA photostability in air is investigated by comparing structurally similar but conformationally different promising NFAs: planar O‐IDTBR and nonplanar O‐IDFBR. A three‐phase degradation process is identified: i) initial photoinduced conformational change (i.e., torsion about the core–benzothiadiazole dihedral), induced by noncovalent interactions with environmental molecules, ii) followed by photo‐oxidation and fragmentation, leading to chromophore bleaching and degradation product formation, and iii) finally complete chromophore bleaching. Initial conformational change is a critical prerequisite for further degradation, providing fundamental understanding of the relative stability of IDTBR and IDFBR, where the already twisted IDFBR is more prone to degradation. When blended with the donor polymer poly(3‐hexylthiophene), both NFAs exhibit improved photostability while the photostability of the polymer itself is significantly reduced by the more miscible twisted NFA. The findings elucidate the important role of NFA molecular structure in photostability of OPV systems, and provide vital insights into molecular design rules for intrinsically photostable NFAs.

With the emergence of nonfullerene electron acceptors resulting in further breakthroughs in the performance of organic solar cells, there is now an urgent need to understand their degradation mechanisms in order to improve their intrinsic stability through better material design. In this study, we present quantitative evidence for a common root cause of light-induced degradation of polymer:nonfullerene and polymer:fullerene organic solar cells in air, namely, a fast photo-oxidation process of the photoactive materials mediated by the formation of superoxide radical ions, whose yield is found to be strongly controlled by the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the electron acceptors used. Our results elucidate the general relevance of this degradation mechanism to both polymer:fullerene and polymer:nonfullerene blends and highlight the necessity of designing electron acceptor materials with sufficient electron affinities to overcome this challenge, thereby paving the way toward achieving long-term solar cell stability with minimal device encapsulation.

We announce the public release of 141,531 moderate-dispersion optical spectra of 72,247 objects acquired over the past 25 years with the FAST Spectrograph on the Fred L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-meter Tillinghast telescope. We describe the data acquisition and processing so that scientists can understand the spectra. We highlight some of the largest FAST survey programs, and make recommendations for use. Supraglacial meltwater reaching a glacier bed can increase ice surface velocities via hydraulic jacking and enhanced basal sliding. However, the relationships between the structure of supraglacial drainage systems, sink-point distributions, glacier flow processes and the magnitude of interannual velocity variability are poorly understood. To explore the hypothesis that spatial variations in the rate and mechanisms of glacier flow are linked to variations in supraglacial drainage system structure and sink-point distribution across an ice cap, we mapped supraglacial drainage systems on Devon Ice Cap from Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery. Spatial patterns of surface velocity and interannual velocity variability were determined using gradient correlation applied to Landsat-7 ETM+ images. Velocity variability is greater in areas close to sink-point locations, presumably because hydrologically forced basal sliding and/or bed deformation are enhanced in such areas. The distribution and characteristics of supraglacial drainage systems may play an important role in determining the distribution of regions of basal sliding, highlighting the need for knowledge of the supraglacial drainage system structure and sink-point distribution to inform efforts to model the dynamic response of Arctic ice caps to future climate warming.

A comparison of the efficiency, stability, and photophysics of organic solar cells employing poly[(5,6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazol-4,7-diyl)-alt-(3,3'″-di(2-octyldodecyl)-2,2';5',2″;5″,2'″-quaterthiophen-5,5'″-diyl)] (PffBT4T-2OD) as a donor polymer blended with either the nonfullerene acceptor EH-IDTBR or the fullerene derivative, [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71 BM) as electron acceptors is reported. Inverted PffBT4T-2OD:EH-IDTBR blend solar cell fabricated without any processing additive achieves power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 9.5 ± 0.2%. The devices exhibit a high open circuit voltage of 1.08 ± 0.01 V, attributed to the high lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of EH-IDTBR. Photoluminescence quenching and transient absorption data are employed to elucidate the ultrafast kinetics and efficiencies of charge separation in both blends, with PffBT4T-2OD exciton diffusion kinetics within polymer domains, and geminate recombination losses following exciton separation being identified as key factors determining the efficiency of photocurrent generation. Remarkably, while encapsulated PffBT4T-2OD:PC71 BM solar cells show significant efficiency loss under simulated solar irradiation ("burn in" degradation) due to the trap-assisted recombination through increased photoinduced trap states, PffBT4T-2OD:EH-IDTBR solar cell shows negligible burn in efficiency loss. Furthermore, PffBT4T-2OD:EH-IDTBR solar cells are found to be substantially more stable under 85 °C thermal stress than PffBT4T-2OD:PC71 BM devices.

A norbornenyl-based homopolymer that has a dendronised iridium(iii) complex attached to every monomer unit has been synthesized. The dendronised iridium(iii) complex is comprised of three facially arranged 2-phenylpyridyl ligands. Two of the ligands bear first generation biphenyl-based dendrons with 2-ethylhexyloxy surface groups attached and the third ligand is attached to the polymer backbone via a benzyloxy ester. The polymer was formed by ring opening metathesis using the Grubbs III catalyst and was found to have an Mp of 130 kDa by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. At a concentration of 25 mg cm -3 the polymer solution had a viscosity of 1.09 mPa s, which was 34% higher than a solution containing a dendrimer of same weight per volume. The dendrimer had the same core, dendrons, and surface groups but differed from the polymer in that it had dendrons attached to three of the ligands rather than the two of the polymer. The solution photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the poly(dendrimer) was found to be 57%, indicating that intra-polymer chromophore interactions were not leading to strong quenching of the luminescence. However, in the solid-state the PLQY dropped significantly, indicating that inter-polymer chromophore interactions were significant. The presence of the dendrons allowed the simple blending of the polymer with 4,4′-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2, 2′-biphenyl (CBP), and the blended film had a PLQY of 50%. Simple bilayer devices with a blended emissive layer and an electron injection and transport layer had an external quantum efficiency of 6.2% at a brightness of 100 cd m-2, showing that poly(dendrimer)s are a promising class of OLED material. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Hectochelle is an optical band, fiber-fed, multiobject echelle spectrograph deployed at the MMT Observatory on Mount Hopkins, Arizona. The optical fibers that feed the Hectochelle are positioned by the Hectospec robot positioner on the MMT f/5 focal surface, and the Hectochelle shares an optical fiber feed system with the Hectospec, a moderate-dispersion spectrograph that is collocated with the Hectochelle. Hectochelle can record up to 240 spectra simultaneously at a resolution of 38,000. Spectra cover a single diffractive order that is approximately 150 A wide. The total potential operating passband of the Hectochelle extends from 3800 A to 9000 A. Operated in conjunction with the MMT f/5 secondary, the MMT wide-field corrector, and the atmospheric dispersion compensator, the patrol field is 1° in diameter and the individual fiber slits are 1.5′′ in diameter. A product’s architecture can affect many aspects of product and process quality, from technical performance to the design effort required, production costs and satisfaction of later lifecycle requirements. This paper explores how computational tools can augment creative methods in product architecture design. Based on an empirical study aiming to understand the context of product architecture design, a new computational method is proposed to support this activity. In the method, product architectures—networks of components linked by connections—can be synthesised using constraints on the structure of the network to define the set of ‘realisable’ architectures for a product. An example illustrates how the method might be used on a real design problem, including the construction of an appropriate set of network structure constraints and the identification of promising architectures from the synthesis results. Preliminary evaluation of the method’s usability, assessed through a laboratory experiment, and its utility, assessed through application to a real historical design problem, supported by initial validation by an engineer from the case study company, suggests that the method has value for engineering design practice.

A method for the accurate mass measurement of negative radical ions by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) is described. This is an extension to our previously described method for the accurate mass measurement of positive radical ions (Griffiths NW, Wyatt MF, Kean SD, Graham AE, Stein BK, Brenton AG. Rapid Commun. Mass Spectrom. 2010; 24: 1629). The porphyrin standard reference materials (SRMs) developed for positive mode measurements cannot be observed in negative ion mode, so fullerene and fluorinated porphyrin compounds were identified as effective SRMs. The method is of immediate practical use for the accurate mass measurement of functionalised fullerenes, for which negative ion MALDI-TOFMS is the principal mass spectrometry characterisation technique. This was demonstrated by the accurate mass measurement of six functionalised C(60) compounds.

The ankle—brachial index (ABI) is the standard test used in clinical practice to detect peripheral artery disease (PAD) and is a powerful predictor of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. This study sought to measure the baseline knowledge of the ABI test among a sample of internal medicine residents and to examine the impact of an educational intervention on performance of the test. A total of 29 residents were asked to perform three tasks, with the performance of each task being assessed using a point-based scoring system: measure an ABI on a normal volunteer (15 points), calculate the ABI based on data from a hypothetical patient (3 points), and interpret a range of ABI values (6 points). A standardized educational intervention was then provided and post-education performance was assessed for each task using the same scoring system. At baseline, 4% of residents correctly measured the ABI, 10% correctly calculated the ABI, and 45% correctly interpreted the ABI. Baseline performance was unaffected by year of residency training. Following the educational intervention, 50% of residents correctly measured the ABI, 75% correctly calculated the ABI, and 88% correctly interpreted the ABI. The mean score for the tasks of ABI measurement, calculation and interpretation between baseline and post-education were 4.6 ± 3 and 13.9 ± 1.6 ( p < 0.0001), 1 ± 0.9 and 2.3 ± 1.2 ( p = 0.002), and 4.9 ± 1.6 and 5.9 ± 0.3 ( p = 0.008), respectively. In conclusion, baseline knowledge of the ABI test was poor among a sample of internal medicine residents. These results suggest that instruction regarding the ABI test is deficient in medical school and residency programs and requires action by those responsible for the education of medical students and residents.

An investigation of various solvent-free matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) sample preparation methods for the characterization of organometallic and coordination compounds is described. Such methods are desirable for insoluble materials, compounds that are only soluble in disadvantageous solvents, or complexes that dissociate in solution, all of which present a major "difficulty" to most mass spectrometry techniques. First-row transition metal acetylacetonate complexes, which have been characterized previously by solution preparation MALDI-TOFMS, were used to evaluate the various solvent-free procedures. These procedures comprise two distinct steps: the first being the efficient "solids mixing" (the mixing of sample and matrix), and the second being the effective transfer of the sample/matrix mixture to the MALDI target plate. This investigation shows that vortex mixing is the most efficient first step and that smearing using a microspatula is the most effective second step. In addition, the second step is shown to be much more critical than the first step in obtaining high-quality data. Case studies of truly insoluble materials highlight the importance of these techniques for the wider chemistry community.

Transition-metal acetylacetonate complexes of the form Metal(acac)(2), where Metal = Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), and Metal(acac)(3), where Metal = V(III), Cr(III), Mn(III), Fe(III), and Co(III), were investigated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). The data was acquired using the aprotic, electron transfer matrix, 2-[(2E)-3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2-methylprop-2-enylidene]malononitrile (DCTB), and the observation of positive radical ions is shown clearly to depend on the metal element and the oxidation state it occupies. The ionization energy of DCTB was calculated to be 8.08 eV by density functional theory methods, which is notably lower than the experimental value, but within the range of other computational values. This value is very close to those of the analytes, so the existing electron transfer mechanism which is based on the ionization energies of the matrix and analyte, cannot be used predictively. Similarly, the data neither proves nor disproves the validity of the existing electron transfer ionization mechanism, with respect to metal coordination complexes without strong chromophores. In this case, periodic trends may be more useful in explaining the observed species and the prediction of species from sets of similar complexes. The addition of a sodium salt benefits the MALDI-TOFMS characterization of certain compounds studied, but the benefit of the addition of ammonium or silver salts is negligible.

The synthesis of the first soluble thieno[3,2-b]thiophene based porphyrazine (ZnTTPz) is reported from the cyclisation of 2,3-dicyano-5-octylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene. ZnTTPz can be considered the all thiophene analogue of naphthalocyanine. ZnTTPz exhibits a red-shifted absorption in solution and thin film, as well as a reduced band gap in comparison to the thiophene analogue due to an increased conjugation length. Films of ZnTTPz processed from solution exhibit p-type semiconducting behaviour in field-effect transistors with low hysteresis and reasonable charge carrier mobility.

The mild epoxidation of strained alkenes using (DMPO)2MnCl catalyst (DMPO = 1,2-dimethyl-4(1H)-pyridinone-3-olate) in the presence of various oxidants was studied. Hydrogen peroxide and monopersulfate were found to be the best oxidants when used with imidazole in acetonitrile at 4 °C, with up to 94% conversion. Dismutation of hydrogen peroxide was also observed when used as an oxidant. The epoxidation using hydrogen peroxide or monoperoxysulfate appears to be mild and very selective for strained alkenes. A mechanism is proposed where imidazole is required for activation of the oxidant and where a detected MnV = O species is proposed as the active species. Competitive reaction between H2O2 and the substrate for the active species is proposed and homolytic vs heterolytic scissions of the Osingle bondO bond of the oxidant are discussed.

The kinetics of enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (eROP) of e-caprolactone in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was investigated using a new, high-pressure sampling autoclave. The polymerization was performed using Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) as catalyst and was found to be approximately first order with respect to monomer up to 80% conversion. For the first time we have been able to present kinetic results on the eROP of caprolactone in scCO2. These results show that high molecular weight polymer could be obtained (up to 50 kDa) with polydispersities in the range of 2. The relatively poor molecular weight control was attributed to the large degree of enzyme-catalyzed transesterification that forms both cyclic species (intramolecular transesterification) and linear polymer (intermolecular transesterification). This effect has also been observed for eROP of e-caprolactone in conventional solvents. The formation of cyclic oligomers of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated as a function of conversion, and comparisons were made to similar studies undertaken in conventional solvents.

2-[(2E)-3-(4-tert-Butylphenyl)-2-methylprop-2-enylidene]malononitrile (DCTB) is a nonpolar, aprotic matrix and was used in the analysis of a variety of compounds by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). The classes of compounds include coordination compounds, organometallics, conjugated organic compounds (including porphyrins and phthalocyanines), carbohydrates, calixarenes, and macrocycles. For some samples, comparisons are made with spectra acquired with the use of 1,8,9-trihydroxyanthracene (dithranol), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and 2,4,6-trihydroxyacetophenone matrixes. Traditionally, the majority of these compounds would have been analyzed by fast-atom bombardment (FAB), liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry (LSIMS), or electrospray techniques, but this work shows that MALDI-TOFMS using DCTB has advantages over these techniques, particularly FAB and LSIMS. Certain limitations of DCTB are noted, for example, in the analysis of water-soluble compounds such as peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides, and good working practices for the use of the matrix are also outlined.

CfAIR2 is a large homogeneously reduced set of near-infrared (NIR) light curves for Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) obtained with the 1.3m Peters Automated InfraRed Imaging TELescope (PAIRITEL). This data set includes 4607 measurements of 94 SN Ia and 4 additional SN Iax observed from 2005-2011 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins, Arizona. CfAIR2 includes JHKs photometric measurements for 88 normal and 6 spectroscopically peculiar SN Ia in the nearby universe, with a median redshift of z~0.021 for the normal SN Ia. CfAIR2 data span the range from -13 days to +127 days from B-band maximum. More than half of the light curves begin before the time of maximum and the coverage typically contains ~13-18 epochs of observation, depending on the filter. We present extensive tests that verify the fidelity of the CfAIR2 data pipeline, including comparison to the excellent data of the Carnegie Supernova Project. CfAIR2 contributes to a firm local anchor for supernova cosmology studies in the NIR. Because SN Ia are more nearly standard candles in the NIR and are less vulnerable to the vexing problems of extinction by dust, CfAIR2 will help the supernova cosmology community develop more precise and accurate extragalactic distance probes to improve our knowledge of cosmological parameters, including dark energy and its potential time variation., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, 10 tables. The Canadian Arctic contains the largest area of land ice (~150,000 km2) on Earth outside the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica and is a potentially significant contributor to global sea level change. The current ice cover includes large ice caps that are remnants of the Wisconsinan Laurentide and Innuitian ice sheets, and many smaller ice caps and valley glaciers that formed during the late Holocene. Most of these ice masses have decreased in area over the past century as a result of climate warming in the first half of the 20th century and since the mid-1980s. In general, smaller ice masses have lost a higher proportion of their area, but the largest total area losses have come from the larger ice caps. Both iceberg calving and negative surface mass balances have contributed to this episode of glacier shrinkage. Long-term calving rates are not well known, however, and many tidewater glaciers exhibit velocity variability on a range of timescales that may affect calving rates. Floating ice shelves in northern Ellesmere Island have lost over 90 % of their area in the 20th century, with the most recent phase of disintegration occurring since 2000. Some fjords in the region are now ice free for the first time in over 3000 years. Regional rates of mass loss have accelerated strongly since 2005, and Canadian Arctic glaciers and ice caps have emerged as the most significant non–ice sheet contributor to the nonsteric component of global sea level rise.

A convergent synthesis of a first generation dendrimer with biphenyl-based dendrons and a hexaphenylbenzene core is reported. Suzuki coupling of six first generation biphenyl-dendrons with the rigid hexakis(4-iodophenyl)benzene core furnished the title asterisk-cored dendrimer in 60% yield. Twelve copies of β-(1→6)-linked glucosamine-based oligosaccharides were then efficiently coupled with the acetylenyl surface groups of the dendrimer via a Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to give a series of multivalent carbohydrate constructs that mimic the globular nodules of polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) produced by Staphylococcus aureus.

Graph structures are fundamental in many aspects of design. This paper discusses a way to improve access to design spaces of graph structures, by converting graph structures into numerical values and vice versa. Mathematical properties of such conversions are described, and those that are desirable are identified. A candidate conversion algorithm, Indexed Stacked Blocks, is proposed. Its use and benefits are illustrated through an example graph-structure design problem. The example demonstrates that such conversions allow design spaces of graph structures to be visualized, sampled, and evaluated. In principle, they also allow other powerful numerical techniques to be applied to the design of graph-structure-based systems.

When, in 1805, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge embarked from Portsmouth for Malta, he hoped it would be a turning point in his life. He was assisted in organising his journey by George Bellas Greenough, who, two years later, was to become the first President of the Geological Society of London. One revealing phrase by Coleridge describes the giver and the parting gift: "Haiiy's Mineralogy packed up with Greenough's neatness in one parallelogram of brown paper!" (Coburn, 1962 n.2015). Greenough had assisted Coleridge in many practical ways; not least he had given him some dried soup for the journey, and a bottle of brandy (to combat either seasickness or the soup). We do not know ifColeridge read this travel literature from cover to cover, but the phrase that described the package is about Greenough himself and a summary of his character as it has been seen for many generations: neat, ordered and precise. The purpose of this paper is to balance that view of Greenough with the other side to his character, 'the Romantic'.

While design research has concentrated on creativity in the early phases of design and on creativity in very open-ended design tasks, in practice many design projects concern the modification or incremental development of existing systems to meet new needs and restrictions. Some projects adopt a process of defining, prioritising and propagating requirements and constraints that bypasses conceptual design as it is conventionally understood. However, incremental development requires creative design to deal with multiple conflicting requirements, both in early design and in solving later local problems: the challenge lies in finding a satisfactory solution while avoiding a cascade of changes to the rest of the system. This paper draws on two case studies, one of the design of a new generation of diesel engines and one of the refurbishment of a hospital ward, to argue that in these domains creativity is required to find designs that change as little as possible and meet the given requirements with minimal effort.

The Contact and Channel Approach (C&C-A) has been developed to support the decomposition and design of technical systems. It is based on the principle that function and form emerge together during design, and therefore should be considered together in a design representation. This paper discusses the theory underlying the C&C-A, and describes its formalization and implementation in a software tool. The approach is applied to model the system architecture of a humanoid robot arm considering the impact of a proposed design change. This illustrates some of the main benefits of the Contact and Channel Approach: helping designers visualize, understand and communicate the complex dependencies between function and form in a system architecture.

Vizyenos twice quotes Goethe's Wandrers Nachtlied in his story, in Greek, and in his own translation. A comparison of the translation with Goethe's original reveals that Vizyenos has adapted rather than translated the original. Vizyenos introduces the ideas of a partner and the sleep of death, matters not contained in Goethe's poem, thus fitting the poem thematically to his own story. Story and poem interact, and the Goethe-Vizyenos poem influences the development of the story.

A method for the accurate mass measurement of positive radical ions by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) is described. Initial use of a conjugated oligomeric calibration material was rejected in favour of a series of meso-tetraalkyl/tetraalkylaryl-functionalised porphyrins, from which the two calibrants required for a particular accurate mass measurement were chosen. While all measurements of monoisotopic species were within +/-5 ppm, and the method was rigorously validated using chemometrics, mean values of five measurements were used for extra confidence in the generation of potential elemental formulae. Potential difficulties encountered when measuring compounds containing multi-isotopic elements are discussed, where the monoisotopic peak is no longer the lowest mass peak, and a simple mass-correction solution can be applied. The method requires no significant expertise to implement, but care and attention is required to obtain valid measurements. The method is operationally simple and will prove useful to the analytical chemistry community.

We combine results from searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a standard model Higgs boson (H) in the process gg -> H -> W+W- in p (p) over bar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. With 4.8 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity analyzed at CDF and 5.4 fb(-1) at D0, the 95% confidence level upper limit on sigma(gg -> H) x B(H -> W+W-) is 1.75 pb at m(H) = 120 GeV, 0.38 pb at m(H) = 165 GeV, and 0.83 pb at m(H) = 200 GeV. Assuming the presence of a fourth sequential generation of fermions with large masses, we exclude at the 95% confidence level a standard-model-like Higgs boson with a mass between 131 and 204 GeV.

Nanostructure-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (NALDI-TOFMS) has been developed recently as a matrix-free/surface-assisted alternative to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). The NALDI surface of silicon nanowires is already very effective for the analysis of small to medium sized, polar organic molecules in positive ion mode. The current study examined this technology for the analysis of several nonpolar organic, organometallic, and ionic compounds in positive ion mode, as well as a fluorinated compound and various acids in negative ion mode. NALDI data are compared and contrasted with MALDI data for the same compounds, and the higher sensitivity of NALDI is highlighted by the successful characterization of two porphyrins for a sample amount of 10 amol per spot.

Visually Impaired People (VIP) encounter difficulties with the perception of products and environments in their everyday life such as a door in a wall or a column on a station concourse. Contrast can be an essential and vital aid for negotiating the world for people with low vision (Bright et al., 1997; Dalke et al., 2004b). The development of a colour contrast assessment system would enable the construction and design sectors to create more accessible spaces and objects.

We combine searches by the CDF and D0 Collaborations for a Higgs boson decaying to W+W-. The data correspond to an integrated total luminosity of 4.8 (CDF) and 5.4 (D0) fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No excess is observed above background expectation, and resulting limits on Higgs boson production exclude a standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 162-166 GeV at the 95% C.L.

M. L. West has recently presented a magisterial account of the history of Greek epic in which Aeolic phases and other entities are assumed. His account is the more impressive because it combines linguistic features skilfully handled with an account of the thematic development of epic, and also specifies at what stages the various linguistic features entered the tradition. West assumes an Aeolic phase, or phases, of heroic epic composition, and accounts for the presence of Aeolic forms (162): ‘It has usually been inferred that they are just a residue left after Ionian poets had adapted an Aeolic poetic language into their own dialect as far as it would go. This is, I have no doubt, the correct interpretation.’ I think it is not.
