Faraday rotation studies of distant radio sources can constrain the evolution and the origin of cosmic magnetism. We use data from the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey: Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) to study the dependence of the Faraday rotation measure (RM) on redshift. By focusing on radio sources that are close in terms of their projection on the sky, but physically unrelated (random pairs), we measure the RM difference, $\Delta$RM, between the two sources. Thus, we isolate the extragalactic contribution to $\Delta$RM from other contributions. We present a statistical analysis of the resulting sample of random pairs and find a median absolute RM difference |$\Delta$RM| $ = (1.79 \pm 0.09)$ rad/m$^{2}$ , with |$\Delta$RM| uncorrelated both with respect to the redshift difference of the pair and the redshift of the nearer source, and a median excess of random pairs over physical pairs of $(1.65 \pm 0.10)$ rad/m$^{2}$. We seek to reproduce this result with Monte Carlo simulations assuming a non vanishing seed cosmological magnetic field and a redshift evolution of the comoving magnetic field strength that varies as $1/(1 + z)^{\gamma}$. We find the best fitting results $B_0 \equiv B_{\rm comoving}(z = 0) \lesssim (2.0 \pm 0.2)$ nG and $\gamma \lesssim 4.5 \pm 0.2$ that we conservatively quote as upper limits due to an unmodelled but non vanishing contribution of local environments to the RM difference. A comparison with cosmological simulations shows our results to be incompatible with primordial magnetogenesis scenarios with uniform seed fields of order nG.

Turbulent processes at work in the intracluster medium perturb this environment, displacing gas, and creating local density fluctuations that can be quantified via X-ray surface brightness fluctuation analyses. Improved knowledge of these phenomena would allow for a better determination of the mass of galaxy clusters, as well as a better understanding of their dynamic assembly. In this work, we aim to set constraints on the structure of turbulence using X-ray surface brightness fluctuations. We seek to consider the stochastic nature of this observable and to constrain the structure of the underlying power spectrum. We propose a new Bayesian approach, relying on simulation-based inference to account for the whole error budget. We used the X-COP cluster sample to individually constrain the power spectrum in four regions and within $R_{500}$. We spread the analysis on the 12 systems to alleviate the sample variance. We then interpreted the density fluctuations as the result of either gas clumping or turbulence. For each cluster considered individually, the normalisation of density fluctuations correlates positively with the Zernike moment and centroid shift, but negatively with the concentration and the Gini coefficient. The spectral index within $R_{500}$ and evaluated over all clusters is consistent with a Kolmogorov cascade. The normalisation of density fluctuations, when interpreted in terms of clumping, is consistent within $0.5 R_{500}$ with the literature results and numerical simulations; however, it is higher between 0.5 and $1 R_{500}$. Conversely, when interpreted on the basis of turbulence, we deduce a non-thermal pressure profile that is lower than the predictions of the simulations within 0.5 $R_{500}$, but still in agreement in the outer regions. Measuring the magnetic field in cosmic filaments reveals how the Universe is magnetised and the process that magnetised it. Using the Rotation Measures (RM) at 144-MHz from the LoTSS DR2 data, we analyse the rms of the RM extragalactic component as a function of redshift to investigate the evolution with redshift of the magnetic field in filaments. From previous results, we find that the extragalactic term of the RM rms at 144-MHz is dominated by the contribution from filaments (more than 90 percent). Including an error term to account for the minor contribution local to the sources, we fit the data with a model of the physical filament magnetic field, evolving as $B_f = B_{f,0}\,(1+z)^\alpha$ and with a density drawn from cosmological simulations of five magnetogenesis scenarios. We find that the best-fit slope is in the range $\alpha = [-0.2, 0.1]$ with uncertainty of $\sigma_\alpha = 0.4$--0.5, which is consistent with no evolution. The comoving field decreases with redshift with a slope of $\gamma = \alpha - 2 = [-2.2, -1.9]$. The mean field strength at $z=0$ is in the range $B_{f,0}=39$--84~nG. For a typical filament gas overdensity of $\delta_g=10$ the filament field strength at $z=0$ is in the range $B_{f,0}^{10}=8$--26~nG. A primordial stochastic magnetic field model with initial comoving field of $B_{\rm Mpc} = 0.04$--0.11~nG is favoured. The central regions of galaxy clusters are permeated by magnetic fields and filled with relativistic electrons. When clusters merge, the magnetic fields are amplified and relativistic electrons are re-accelerated by turbulence in the intra cluster medium. These electrons reach energies of 1 -- 10 GeV and, in the presence of magnetic fields, produce diffuse radio halos that typically cover an area of ~1 square Mpc. Here we report observations of four clusters whose radio halos are embedded in much more extended, diffuse radio emission, filling a volume 30 times larger than that of radio halos. The emissivity in these larger features is about 20 times lower than the emissivity in radio halos. We conclude that relativistic electrons and magnetic fields extend far beyond radio halos, and that the physical conditions in the outer regions of the clusters are quite different from those in the radio halos., 21 pages, 8 figures, Nature in press

We present LOw Frequency ARray observations of the Coma cluster field at 144\,MHz. The cluster hosts one of the most famous radio halos, a relic, and a low surface-brightness bridge. We detect new features that allow us to make a step forward in the understanding of particle acceleration in clusters. The radio halo extends for more than 2 Mpc, which is the largest extent ever reported. To the North-East of the cluster, beyond the Coma virial radius, we discover an arc-like radio source that could trace particles accelerated by an accretion shock. To the West of the halo, coincident with a shock detected in the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a radio front, with different spectral properties with respect to the rest of the halo. We detect a radial steepening of the radio halo spectral index between 144 MHz and 342 MHz, at $\sim 30^{\prime}$ from the cluster centre, that may indicate a non constant re-acceleration time throughout the volume. We also detect a mild steepening of the spectral index towards the cluster centre. For the first time, a radial change in the slope of the radio-X-ray correlation is found, and we show that such a change could indicate an increasing fraction of cosmic ray versus thermal energy density in the cluster outskirts. Finally, we investigate the origin of the emission between the relic and the source NGC 4789, and we argue that NGC4789 could have crossed the shock originating the radio emission visible between its tail and the relic., submitted to ApJ

We present the first detailed analysis of the radio halo in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 using the LOFAR, uGMRT, and VLA. These observations combined with archival X-ray data allowed us to study the halo emission with unprecedented detail. The integrated radio emission from the entire halo is characterized by an ultra-steep spectrum, which can be described by a power law with $\alpha_{144 \rm MHz}^{1.5 \rm GHz}=-1.63\pm0.03$, and a radial steepening in the outer regions. The halo is significantly underluminous according to the scaling relations between radio power and mass at 1.4 GHz but not at 150 MHz; ultra-steep spectrum halos are predicted to be statistically underluminous. Despite the complex structure of this system, the radio halo morphology is remarkably similar to that of the X-ray emission. The radio surface brightness distribution across the halo is strongly correlated with the X-ray brightness of the intracluster medium. The derived correlations show sublinear slopes and there are distinct structures: the core is $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{1.51}$, the outermost region $\rm I_{R}\propto I_{X}^{0.41}$, and we find radio morphological connections with X-ray discontinuities. We also find a strong anti-correlation between the radio spectral index and the X-ray surface brightness, implying radial steepening. We suggests that the halo core is either related to old plasma from previous AGN activity, being advected, compressed and re-accelerated by mechanisms activated by the cold front or less turbulent with strong magnetic field in the core. The change in the radio vs X-ray correlation slopes in the outer regions of the halo could be due to a radial decline of magnetic field, increase in the number density of seed particles or increasing turbulence. We study the distributions of the baryons in massive halos ($M_{vir} > 10^{13} \ h^{-1}M_{\odot}$) in the $Magneticum$ suite of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, out to the unprecedented radial extent of $10 R_{500,\mathrm c}$. We confirm that, under the action of non-gravitational physical phenomena, the baryon mass fraction is lower in the inner regions ($6 R_{500,\mathrm c}$), where the baryon depletion factor $Y_{\rm bar} = f_{\rm bar} / (\Omega_{\rm b}/\Omega_{\rm m})$ approaches the value of unity, expected for "closed-box" systems. We find that both the radial and mass dependency of the baryon, gas, and hot depletion factors are predictable and follow a simple functional form. The star mass fraction is higher in less massive systems, decreases systematically with increasing radii, and reaches a constant value of $Y_{\rm star} \approx 0.09$, where also the gas metallicity is constant, regardless of the host halo mass, as a result of the early ($z>2$) enrichment process., Comment: Submitted to A&A; 9 pages, 6 figures

We present deep and high fidelity images of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 at low frequencies, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR). This cluster hosts one of the most prominent known relics, with a remarkably spectacular network of filamentary substructures. The new uGMRT (300-850 MHz) and LOFAR (120-169 MHz) observations, combined with the archival Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA; 1-4 GHz) data, allowed us to carry out the first spatially resolved spectral analysis of the exceptional relic emission down to 6 arcsec resolution over a broad range of frequencies. Our new sensitive radio images confirm the presence of complex filaments of magnetized relativistic plasma also at low frequencies. We find that the integrated spectrum of the relic is consistent with a single power law, without any sign of spectral steepening, at least below 3 GHz. Unlike previous claims, the relic shows an integrated spectral index of $-1.07\pm0.02$ between 144 MHz and 3 GHz, which is consistent with the (quasi)stationary shock approximation. The spatially resolved spectral analysis suggests that the relic surface very likely traces the complex shock front, with a broad distribution of Mach numbers propagating through a turbulent and dynamically active intracluster medium. Our results show that the northern part of the relic is seen edge-on and the southern part close to face-on. We suggest that the complex filaments are regions where higher Mach numbers dominate the (re-)acceleration of electrons that are responsible for the observed radio emission., Comment: 27 pages, 14 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the similarities between two of the most challenging and complex systems in Nature: the network of neuronal cells in the human brain, and the cosmic network of galaxies. We explore the structural, morphological, network properties and the memory capacity of these two fascinating systems, with a quantitative approach. In order to have an homogeneous analysis of both systems, our procedure does not consider the true neural connectivity but an approximation of it, based on simple proximity. The tantalizing degree of similarity that our analysis exposes seems to suggest that the self-organization of both complex systems is likely being shaped by similar principles of network dynamics, despite the radically different scales and processes at play.

Observations of radio relics at very high frequency (>10 GHz) can help to understand how particles age and are (re-)accelerated in galaxy cluster outskirts and how magnetic fields are amplified in these environments. In this work, we present new single-dish 18.6 GHz Sardinia Radio Telescope and 14.25 GHz Effelsberg observations of the well known northern radio relic of CIZA J2242.8+5301. We detected the relic which shows a length of $\sim$1.8 Mpc and a flux density equal to $\rm S_{14.25\,GHz}=(9.5\pm3.9)\,mJy$ and $\rm S_{18.6\,GHz}=(7.67\pm0.90)\,mJy$ at 14.25 GHz and 18.6 GHz respectively. The resulting best-fit model of the relic spectrum from 145 MHz to 18.6 GHz is a power-law spectrum with spectral index $\alpha=1.12\pm0.03$: no evidence of steepening has been found in the new data presented in this work. For the first time, polarisation properties have been derived at 18.6 GHz, revealing an averaged polarisation fraction of $\sim40\%$ and a magnetic field aligned with the 'filaments' or 'sheets' of the relic., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Due to their late formation in cosmic history, clusters of galaxies are not fully in hydrostatic equilibrium and the gravitational pull of their mass at a given radius is expected not to be entirely balanced by the thermal gas pressure. Turbulence may supply additional pressure, and recent (X-ray and SZ) hydrostatic mass reconstructions claim a pressure support of $\sim 5-15\%$ of the total pressure at $R_{\rm 200}$. In this work we show that, after carefully disentangling bulk from small-scale turbulent motions in high-resolution simulations of galaxy clusters, we can constrain which fraction of the gas kinetic energy effectively provides pressure support in the cluster's gravitational potential. While the ubiquitous presence of radial inflows in the cluster can lead to significant bias in the estimate of the non-thermal pressure support, we report that only a part of this energy effectively acts as a source of pressure, providing a support of the order of $\sim 10\%$ of the total pressure at $R_{\rm 200}$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 pages, accepted, to appear in MNRAS Letters

The hot plasma in galaxy clusters is expected to be heated to high temperatures through shocks and adiabatic compression. The thermodynamical properties of the gas encode information on the processes leading to the thermalization of the gas in the cluster's potential well as well as non-gravitational processes such as gas cooling, AGN feedback and kinetic energy. In this work we present the radial profiles of the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) out to the virial radius for a sample of 12 galaxy clusters selected from the Planck all-sky survey. We determine the universal profiles of gas density, temperature, pressure, and entropy over more than two decades in radius. We exploit jointly X-ray information from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich constraints from Planck to recover thermodynamic properties out to 2 R500. We provide average functional forms for the radial dependence of the main quantities and quantify the slope and intrinsic scatter of the population as a function of radius. We find that gas density and pressure profiles steepen steadily with radius, in excellent agreement with previous observational results. Entropy profiles beyond R500 closely follow the predictions for the gravitational collapse of structures. The scatter in all thermodynamical quantities reaches a minimum in the range [0.2-0.8] R500 and increases outwards. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that pressure is substantially more scattered than temperature and density. Our results indicate that once accreting substructures are properly excised, the properties of the ICM beyond the cooling region R > 0.3 R500) follow remarkably well the predictions of simple gravitational collapse and require little non-gravitational corrections., 30 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables. We investigate the possibility for the SKA to detect and study the magnetic fields in galaxy clusters and in the less dense environments surrounding them using Faraday Rotation Measures. To this end, we produce 3-dimensional magnetic field models for galaxy clusters of different masses and in different stages of their evolution, and derive mock rotation measure observations of background radiogalaxies. According to our results, already in phase I, we will be able to infer the magnetic field properties in galaxy clusters as a function of the cluster mass, down to $10^{13}$ solar-masses. Moreover, using cosmological simulations to model the gas density, we have computed the expected rotation measure through shock-fronts that occur in the intra-cluster medium during cluster mergers. The enhancement in the rotation measure due to the density jump will permit to constraint the magnetic field strength and structure after the shock passage.
