Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope’s behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula.

Abstract: We observed the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1804-216 with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes from May to July in 2006. We detected very high energy gamma rays above 600 GeV at the 10 sigma level in an effective exposure of 76 hr. We obtained a differential flux of (5.0+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.6_{sys})\times 10^{-12}(E/1 TeV)^{-\alpha} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index \alpha of 2.69 +/- 0.30_{stat} +/- 0.34_{sys}, which is consistent with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. We also confirm the extended morphology of the source. By combining our result with multi-wavelength observations, we discuss the possible counterparts of HESS J1804-216 and the radiation mechanism based on leptonic and hadronic processes for a supernova remnant and a pulsar wind nebula., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in ApJ

Abstract: We have observed the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 (G320.4-1.2), which contains the gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58, using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array from April to June in 2006. We detected gamma rays above 810 GeV at the 7 sigma level during a total effective exposure of 48.4 hours. We obtained a differential gamma-ray flux at 2.35 TeV of (7.9+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.7_{sys}) \times 10^{-13} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index of 2.21+/-0.39_{stat}+/-0.40_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. The morphology shows extended emission compared to our Point Spread Function. We consider the plausible origin of the high energy emission based on a multi-wavelength spectral analysis and energetics arguments.

Abstract: Optical images of SN 1987A show a triple ring structure. The inner (dust) ring has recently increased in brightness and in the number of hot spots suggesting that the supernova shock wave has collided with the dense pre-existing circumstellar medium, a scenario supported by radio and X-ray observations. Such a shocked environment is widely expected to result in the acceleration of charged particles, and the accompanying emission of very high energy gamma-rays. Here, we report the results of observations made in 2004 and 2006 which yield upper limits on the TeV gamma-ray flux, which are compared with a theoretical prediction. In addition, we set upper limits on the TeV flux for four high energy objects which are located within the same field of view of the observation: the super-bubble 30 Dor C, the Crab-like pulsar PSR B0540$-$69, the X-ray binary LMC X-1, and the supernova remnant N157B., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: Decay properties of an isotope 266Bh and its daughter nucleus 262Db produced by the 248Cm(23Na,5n) reaction were studied by using a gas‐filled recoil separator coupled with a position‐sensitive semiconductor detector. 266Bh was clearly identified from the correlation of the known nuclide, 262Db. The obtained decay properties of 266Bh and 262Db are consistent with those observed in the 278113 chain by RIKEN collaboration, which provided further confirmation of the discovery of 278113.

Abstract: Kepler's supernova, discovered in October 1604, produced a remnant that has been well studied observationally in the radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray bands, and theoretically. Some models have predicted a TeV gamma-ray flux that is detectable with current Imaging Cherenkov Atmospheric Telescopes. We report on observations carried out in 2005 April with the CANGAROO-III telescope. Abstract: We have used the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to observe the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (HBL) object PKS 2155-304 between 2006 July 28 (MJD 53944) and August 2, triggered by the H.E.S.S. report that the source was in a high state of TeV gamma-ray emission. A signal was detected at the 4.8 sigma level in an effective live time of 25.1 hours during the outburst period. The flux of Very High Energy gammarays from the CANGAROO-III observations shows the variability on the time scale of less than a few hours. The averaged integral flux above 660 GeV is (1.6 +/- 0.3_stat +/- 0.5_syst) x 10^-11 cm^-2 sec^-1 which corresponds to ~45% of the flux observed from the Crab nebula. Follow-up observations between August 17 (MJD 53964) and 25 indicate the source activity had decreased., 24 pages, 7 figures, to be published in ApJ

Abstract: We have observed the giant radio galaxy Centaurus A and the globular cluster $\omega$ Centauri in the TeV energy region using the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic system. The system has been in operation since 2004 withan array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) with $\sim$100-m spacings. The observations were carried out in March and April 2004. In total, approximately 10 hours data were obtained for each target.No statistically significant gamma-ray signal has been found above 420 GeV over a wide angular region (a one-degree radius from thepointing center) and we derive flux upper limits using all of the field of view.Implications for the total energy of cosmic rays and the density of the cold dark matter are considered., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to appear in ApJ, emulateapj.cls

Abstract: Sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the North-West rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0$-$4622 was detected with the CANGAROO-II telescope and recently confirmed by the H.E.S.S. group. In addition, the H.E.S.S. data revealed a very wide (up to two degrees in diameter), shell-like profile of the gamma-ray emission. We have carried out CANGAROO-III observations in January and February 2005 with three telescopes and show here the results of three-fold coincidence data. We confirm the H.E.S.S. results about the morphology and the energy spectrum, and find the energy spectrum in the NW-rim is consistent with that of the whole remnant., 9 pages, 13 figures, to appear in ApJ

Abstract: We have been developing an X-ray polarimeter employing MSGC (MicroStrip Gas Proportional Counter) in the energy range from 20 keV to 40 keV. Primary electron clouds produced by photoelectric absorption spread to the direction of the electric vector of incident polarized X-rays. It is possible to obtain the information on the polarization vector of incident X-rays by counting the number of anode strips with the signal due to electron cloud. We considered a wiring for the MS-plate anodes grouped by an appropriate spacing as a simple signal readout system for MSGC. To optimize the spacing, the extent of electron cloud spreading was experimentally investigated and was simulated with the computer simulation code modified EGS4. Moreover, an optimum pitch between anode strips was simulated for polarized X-rays incoming to MS-plate. For the X-rays in the energy range from 20 keV to 40 keV, the optimum spacing and pitch are 20 mm and 0.2 mm for the grouping and for the anode strips, respectively.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract: Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. 23. Usefulness of powdered crown of mandibular first premolars in birth year estimation by radiocarbon dating.

Abstract: Background: Radiocarbon ( 14 C), whose levels increased in the atmosphere between 1955 and 1963, accumulates in the enamel of human teeth only during the process of tooth formation and has been applied to estimate the birth year of unidentified corpses. However, enamel isolation from teeth is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the birth year using 14 C in the crown of a single mandibular first premolar tooth., Materials and Methods: Fourteen mandibular first premolars collected from forensic autopsies were analyzed. For nine teeth, each tooth was cut longitudinally: half of the tooth was enamel, and the other half was crown (1). For the other five teeth, the entire crown was used (2). Thereafter, the 14 C concentration in each tooth was measured using accelerator mass spectrometry., Results: The absolute error between the actual date of birth (DOB) and the estimated DOB was within the range of 1.0-8.8 years in the enamel of five teeth and 0.1-4.0 years in the crown halves of seven teeth (1). For the five teeth with entire crowns, the absolute errors ranged between 0.3 and 3.0 years (2)., Conclusion: The absolute error of 14 C-based year of birth estimation using the powdered crown of the mandibular first premolar teeth ranged between 0.1 and 4.0 years. Our method, which involves pulverizing an entire crown, eliminates the need for the equipment, time, and labor associated with enamel isolation. Abstract: Background: The Teotihuacan civilisation was the largest one in ancient Mesoamerica. The Teotihuacan city was born in the north-eastern Basin of Mexico around the second century BC, reached its peak in the fourth century AD, and had cultural influence throughout Mesoamerica. At its peak, the size of the city reached more than 20 km 2 , and the total population is estimated to have increased from 100,000 to 200,000. However, knowledge of the genetic background of the Teotihuacan people is still limited., Aim: We aimed to determine the mitogenome sequences of the Teotihuacan human remains and compare the ancient and present Mesoamericans. In addition, we aimed to identify the food habits of ancient Teotihuacans., Subjects and Methods: We determined the mitogenome sequences of human remains dated to 250-636 cal AD using target enrichment-coupled next generation sequencing. We also performed stable isotope analysis., Results: We successfully obtained nearly full-length sequences newly unearthed from a civilian dwelling in the Teotihuacan site. Teotihuacan mitochondrial DNA was classified into the haplogroups in present and ancient Mesoamericans. In addition, Teotihuacan individuals had a diet dependent on C4 plants such as maize., Conclusion: Genetic diversity varied among the Teotihuacans.

Abstract: Little is known about the spatiotemporal dynamics of gray wolves in the Pleistocene across low-latitude regions of Eurasia. In Japan, a small-bodied endemic subspecies of Japanese wolves existed and went extinct in the early 1900s. The fossil record indicates that a giant wolf, which reached 70 cm in body height, inhabited Japan during the Pleistocene, but its evolutionary relationship, if any, with the Japanese wolf remains uncertain. Here, to reveal the genetic origin of the Japanese wolf, we analyzed ancient DNA from remains (recovered in Japan) of one Pleistocene wolf that lived 35,000 years ago and one Holocene wolf from 5,000 years ago. The analysis of the mitochondrial DNA revealed that the Pleistocene wolf was not part of the Japanese wolf clade but rather an earlier-diverging lineage. The analysis of the nuclear DNA of the Holocene Japanese wolf revealed that it was an admixture of the Japanese Pleistocene wolf and continental wolf lineages. 26. Ancient DNA reveals multiple origins and migration waves of extinct Japanese brown bear lineages.

Abstract: Little is known about how mammalian biogeography on islands was affected by sea-level fluctuations. In the Japanese Archipelago, brown bears ( Ursus arctos ) currently inhabit only Hokkaido, the northern island, but Pleistocene fossils indicate a past distribution throughout Honshu, Japan's largest island. However, the difficulty of recovering ancient DNA from fossils in temperate East Asia has limited our understanding of their evolutionary history. Here, we analysed mitochondrial DNA from a 32 500-year-old brown bear fossil from Honshu. Our results show that this individual belonged to a previously unknown lineage that split approximately 160 Ka from its sister lineage, the southern Hokkaido clade. This divergence time and fossil record suggest that brown bears migrated from the Eurasian continent to Honshu at least twice; the first population was an early-diverging lineage (greater than 340 Ka), and the second migrated via Hokkaido after approximately 160 Ka, during the ice age. Thus, glacial-age sea-level falls might have facilitated migrations of large mammals more frequently than previously thought, which may have had a substantial impact on ecosystem dynamics in these isolated islands., (© 2021 The Authors.)

27. A Single-Year Cosmic Ray Event at 5410 BCE Registered in 14 C of Tree Rings.

Abstract: The annual 14 C data in tree rings is an outstanding proxy for uncovering extreme solar energetic particle (SEP) events in the past. Signatures of extreme SEP events have been reported in 774/775 CE, 992/993 CE, and ∼660 BCE. Here, we report another rapid increase of 14 C concentration in tree rings from California, Switzerland, and Finland around 5410 BCE. These 14 C data series show a significant increase of ∼6‰ in 5411-5410 BCE. The signature of 14 C variation is very similar to the confirmed three SEP events and points to an extreme short-term flux of cosmic ray radiation into the atmosphere. The rapid 14 C increase in 5411/5410 BCE rings occurred during a period of high solar activity and 60 years after a grand 14 C excursion during 5481-5471 BCE. 28. Gradual onset of the Maunder Minimum revealed by high-precision carbon-14 analyses.

Abstract: The Sun exhibits centennial-scale activity variations and sometimes encounters grand solar minimum when solar activity becomes extremely weak and sunspots disappear for several decades. Such an extreme weakening of solar activity could cause severe climate, causing massive reductions in crop yields in some regions. During the past decade, the Sun's activity has tended to decline, raising concerns that the Sun might be heading for the next grand minimum. However, we still have an underdeveloped understanding of solar dynamo mechanisms and hence precise prediction of near-future solar activity is not attained. Here we show that the 11-year solar cycles were significantly lengthened before the onset of the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715 CE) based on unprecedentedly high-precision data of carbon-14 content in tree rings. It implies that flow speed in the convection zone is an essential parameter to determine long-term solar activity variations. We find that a 16 year-long cycle had occurred three solar cycles before the onset of prolonged sunspot disappearance, suggesting a longer-than-expected preparatory period for the grand minimum. As the Sun has shown a tendency of cycle lengthening since Solar Cycle 23 (1996-2008 CE), the behavior of Solar Cycle 25 can be critically important to the later solar activity.

29. A biomolecular anthropological investigation of William Adams, the first SAMURAI from England.

Abstract: William Adams (Miura Anjin) was an English navigator who sailed with a Dutch trading fleet to the far East and landed in Japan in 1600. He became a vassal under the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was bestowed with a title, lands and swords, and became the first SAMURAI from England. "Miura" comes from the name of the territory given to him and "Anjin" means "pilot". He lived out the rest of his life in Japan and died in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, in 1620, where he was reportedly laid to rest. Shortly after his death, graveyards designated for foreigners were destroyed during a period of Christian repression, but Miura Anjin's bones were supposedly taken, protected, and reburied. Archaeological investigations in 1931 uncovered human skeletal remains and it was proposed that they were those of Miura Anjin. However, this could not be confirmed from the evidence at the time and the remains were reburied. In 2017, excavations found skeletal remains matching the description of those reinterred in 1931. We analyzed these remains from various aspects, including genetic background, dietary habits, and burial style, utilizing modern scientific techniques to investigate whether they do indeed belong to the first English SAMURAI.

30. Prolonged production of 14 C during the ~660 BCE solar proton event from Japanese tree rings.

Abstract: Annual rings record the intensity of cosmic rays (CRs) that had entered into the Earth's atmosphere. Several rapid 14 C increases in the past, such as the 775 CE and 994CE 14 C spikes, have been reported to originate from extreme solar proton events (SPEs). Another rapid 14 C increase, also known as the ca. 660 BCE event in German oak tree rings as well as increases of 10 Be and 36 Cl in ice cores, was presumed similar to the 775 CE event; however, as the 14 C increase of approximately 10‰ in 660 BCE had taken a rather longer rise time of 3-4 years as compared to that of the 775 CE event, the occurrence could not be simply associated to an extreme SPE. In this study, to elucidate the rapid increase in 14 C concentrations in tree rings around 660 BCE, we have precisely measured the 14 C concentrations of earlywoods and latewoods inside the annual rings of Japanese cedar for the period 669-633 BCE. Based on the feature of 14 C production rate calculated from the fine measured profile of the 14 C concentrations, we found that the 14 C rapid increase occurred within 665-663.5 BCE, and that duration of 14 C production describing the event is distributed from one month to 41 months. The possibility of occurrence of consecutive SPEs over up to three years is offered.

Abstract: Atmospheric radiocarbon ( 14 C) levels increased from 1955 to 1963 due to atmospheric nuclear weapon tests, and then decreased. As 14 C accumulates in human tooth enamel while the enamel is being formed, 14 C can be used to estimate the birth year of unidentified bodies. Measurement results of 14 C content in tooth enamel using accelerator mass spectrometry vary depending on the enamel's sample site. To address this problem, a method for equalizing samples using a pulverizer was considered in this study. Regarding the tube and cone used as the pulverizer, (1) a polycarbonate tube and stainless steel cone, (2) a stainless steel tube and cone, and (3) a tungsten carbide tube and cone, were compared. In (1), the modern carbon ratio was approximately half that of the normal ratio of 100 pMC, with which accurate dating was impossible, and in (2), a high background value was obtained for IAEA-C1, which was pulverized using a reusable tube and cone. In (3), the 14 C content for IAEA-C1 pulverized using reusable tube and cone, which was washed with quartz sand, was 0.31 ± 0.01 pMC. This result did not show any problems regarding background value. Therefore, the use of tungsten carbide products and washing with quartz sand is recommended for 14 C measurement of pulverized teeth., (Copyright © 2019. Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Abstract: We have been continuously observing the daily (7)Be concentrations in surface air at Yamagata, Japan (38.25 degrees N, 140.35 degrees E) since 2000. The yearly profile of the (7)Be concentration indicates the variation in galactic cosmic rays owing to solar modulation. Over 8y, the (7)Be concentration, cosmic neutrons, and number of sunspots varied by 37.4%, 12.2%, and 92.8%, respectively. The influence of precipitation on the (7)Be variability was approximately 5%. Hence, the yearly (7)Be concentration was mainly varied by the solar modulation of the (7)Be production rates. Based on the production rates found in an EXPACS simulation, the observed variability indicates (7)Be transport from high latitudes. The daily (7)Be concentrations have two significant periodic components of 19d and 36d. The 36-d component implies a relationship between the sun's rotation and the vertical transport of air masses under quiet solar activity.

Abstract: Experimental search for the superheavy 7H isotope was performed in the reaction p(8He,pp)7H with the 8He beam at 61.3A MeV. The evidence for existence of the 7H state near the t+4n threshold was obtained. In the same experiment, the p(8He,t) reaction populating the ground and excited 2(+) state of 6He was investigated. The obtained results argue on a specific structure of the 8He ground state containing the 6He subsystem in the excited 2(+) state with a large weight.

Abstract: Protons with energies up to approximately 10(15) eV are the main component of cosmic rays, but evidence for the specific locations where they could have been accelerated to these energies has been lacking. Electrons are known to be accelerated to cosmic-ray energies in supernova remnants, and the shock waves associated with such remnants, when they hit the surrounding interstellar medium, could also provide the energy to accelerate protons. The signature of such a process would be the decay of pions (pi(0)), which are generated when the protons collide with atoms and molecules in an interstellar cloud: pion decay results in gamma-rays with a particular spectral-energy distribution. Here we report the observation of cascade showers of optical photons resulting from gamma-rays at energies of approximately 10(12) eV hitting Earth's upper atmosphere, in the direction of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946. The spectrum is a good match to that predicted by pion decay, and cannot be explained by other mechanisms.
