Abstract

Abstract Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multi-megaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Abstract

Carbon fusion reactions $$^{12}$$ 12 C($$^{12}$$ 12 C,p)$$^{23}$$ 23 Na and $$^{12}$$ 12 C($$^{12}$$ 12 C,$$\alpha $$ α )$$^{20}$$ 20 Ne play a key role in the evolution of massive stars and in explosive scenarios such as type-Ia supernovae and super-bursts in binary stars. A direct determination of their cross sections is extremely challenging and discrepancies exist between different data sets in the literature. Here we report the results of a direct measurement performed at the CIRCE Tandem Accelerator Laboratory in Caserta (Italy), using $$\varDelta E-E$$ Δ E - E detectors for unambiguous charge identification. Cross sections were measured in the energy range $$E_{\mathrm{c.m.}} =2.51{-}4.36$$ E c . m . = 2.51 - 4.36 MeV with energy steps between 10 and 25 keV in the centre of mass. To our knowledge these represent the finest energy steps to date. Results are presented in the form of partial and summed astrophysical $${\tilde{S}}$$ S ~ -factors for individual proton- and $$\alpha $$ α -particle channels. Branching ratios of individual proton- and $$\alpha $$ α -particle groups were found to vary significantly with energy. Angular distributions, albeit limited to three angles, were also found to be non-isotropic, which could be a potential explanation for the discrepancies observed among different data sets. Further efforts are ongoing to extend measurements to lower energies.

Abstract

International audience; Several wooden objects discovered in the sanctuary of the goddess Mephitis in the Ansanto Valley (Southern Italy), and dated to the second half of the 1st millennium BC, are analyzed in this study with the aim of investigating the woodworking technologies of the ancient population, the Samnites, who venerated the goddess.No woodworking tools have been discovered during archaeological excavations and original tool-marks on the objects were covered during the restoration of the objects in the mid 20th century. Therefore, a dendrotypological approach was used to study the objects, though challenges to the analyses and interpretation of results arose from the non-optimal state of preservation of the wood and the materials used during restoration, which interrupt the tree-ring sequences.The analyzed features (wood taxon, tree age and size and part of the trunk isolated for the carving process) highlight the presence of non-uniform woodworking practices, which could be related to the presence of several craftsmen or woodshops, as attested in the ancient Greek world. The stylistic differences identified in the sculptures from the Ansanto Valley might refer to the social status of Samnite families who commissioned the ex-voto.

Abstract

A new multi-isotope plutonium standard for isotopic ratio measurements with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) was created by gravimetric mixing of different single-isotope standards provided by IRMM (Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-242, Pu-244). This standard material has been measured at the AMS facilities at Canberra (Australia), Cologne (Germany), Caserta (Italy), Sevilla (Spain) and Zurich (Switzerland). Additionally, the material was characterized using a Neptune MC-ICPMS (multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) at the joint Cologne-Bonn isotope facility. The results of this laboratory intercomparison are presented and consensus values for the isotope compositions of the standard material are proposed.

Abstract

The electron screening in the d(d, p)t reaction has been studied for the deuterated metal Pt at a sample temperature T = 20 ◦C–340 ◦C and for Co at T = 20 ◦C and 200 ◦C. The enhanced electron screening decreases with increasing temperature, where the data agree with the plasma model of Debye applied to the quasi-free metallic electrons. The data represent the first observation of a temperature dependence of a nuclear cross section. We also measured the screening effect for the deuterated metal Ti (an element of group 4 of the periodic table) at T = −10 ◦C–200 ◦C: above 50 ◦C, the hydrogen solubility dropped to values far below 1 and a large screening effect became observable. Similarly, all metals of groups 3 and 4 and the lanthanides showed a solubility of a few per cent at T=200 ◦C (compared to T=20 ◦C) and a large screening also became observable. Within the Debye model, the deduced number of valence electrons per metallic atom agrees with the corresponding number from the Hall coefficient, for all metals investigated. Abstract

Background: The O17(p,γ)F18 reaction affects the production of key isotopes (e.g., F18 and O18) in the explosive hydrogen burning that powers classical novae. Under these explosive conditions, the reaction rate is dominated by contributions from a narrow resonance at Ec.m.=183keV and by the combined contributions of direct capture and low-energy tails of broad resonances. At present, the astrophysical reaction rate is not well constrained because of the lack of data in the energy region appropriate to classical novae. Purpose: This study aims at the measurement of the O17(p,γ)F18 reaction cross section in order to determine its reaction rate in the temperature region appropriate to explosive hydrogen burning in novae. Method: The O17(p,γ)F18 reaction cross section was measured using both the prompt detection of the emitted γ rays and an activation technique. Measurements were carried out at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (Gran Sasso, Italy) where the strongly reduced cosmic-ray-induced background allows for improved sensitivity compared to previous studies. Results: The O17(p,γ)F18 reaction cross section was measured in the range Ec.m.=160 to 370keV. The strength of the Ec.m.=183keV resonance, ωγ=1. 67±0.12μeV, was determined with unprecedented precision. The total S factor was obtained through a combined fit of prompt γ-ray and activation results. An overall global fit including other existing data sets was also carried out and a recommended astrophysical reaction rate is presented. Conclusions: The reaction rate uncertainty attained in this work is now below the required precision for nova models. We verified, following a full set of hydrodynamic nova models, that the abundances of oxygen and fluorine isotopes obtained with the present reaction rate are determined with 10% precision and put firmer constraints on observational signatures of novae events.

Abstract

[EN] The KM3NeT research infrastructure, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea, will host neutrino telescopes for the identification of neutrino sources in the Universe and for studies of the neutrino mass hierarchy. These telescopes will house hundreds of thousands of photomultiplier tubes that will have to be operated in a stable and reliable fashion. In this context, the stability of the dark counts has been investigated for photomultiplier tubes with negative high voltage on the photocathode and held in insulating support structures made of 3D printed nylon material. Small gaps between the rigid support structure and the photomultiplier tubes in the presence of electric fields can lead to discharges that produce dark count rates that are highly variable. A solution was found by applying the same insulating varnish as used for the high voltage bases directly to the outside of the photomultiplier tubes. Abstract

Classical novae are important contributors to the abundances of key isotopes, such as the radioactive ^{18}F, whose observation by satellite missions could provide constraints on nucleosynthesis models in novae. The ^{17}O(p,\gamma)^{18}F reaction plays a critical role in the synthesis of both oxygen and fluorine isotopes but its reaction rate is not well determined because of the lack of experimental data at energies relevant to novae explosions. In this study, the reaction cross section has been measured directly for the first time in a wide energy range Ecm = 200 - 370 keV appropriate to hydrogen burning in classical novae. In addition, the E=183 keV resonance strength, \omega \gamma=1.67\pm0.12 \mueV, has been measured with the highest precision to date. The uncertainty on the ^{17}O(p,\gamma)^{18}F reaction rate has been reduced by a factor of 4, thus leading to firmer constraints on accurate models of novae nucleosynthesis., Comment: accepted by Phys. The rate of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle of hydrogen burning is controlled by the 14N(p,γ )15O reaction. The reaction proceeds by capture to the ground states and several excited states in 15O. In order to obtain a reliable extrapolation of the excitation curve to astrophysical energy, fits in the R-matrix framework are needed. In an energy range that sensitively tests such fits, new cross-section data are reported here for the four major transitions in the 14N(p,γ )15O reaction. The experiment has been performed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400-kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy. Using a composite germanium detector, summing corrections have been considerably reduced with respect to previous studies. The cross sections for capture to the ground state and to the 5181, 6172, and 6792 keV excited states in 15O have been determined at 359, 380, and 399 keV beam energy. In addition, the branching ratios for the decay of the 278-keV resonance have been remeasured.

Abstract

The radiative capture reaction View the MathML source has been investigated in the energy range E=3.3 to 4.5 MeV. This experiment focused in particular on the cascade transition to the 0+ state at Ex=6.05 MeV in 16O and was performed by detecting the capture γ-rays with a NaI detector array at the windowless 4He gas target of the recoil mass separator ERNA in coincidence with the 16O ejectiles. The 6.05 MeV transition has been considered recently as a component accounting for up to 15% of the View the MathML source total cross section at astrophysical energies. The arrangement of the detector array yielded additional information on the γ-ray multipolarity, i.e. the ratio σE2/σE1, and it was found that the 6.05 MeV transition is entirely E2 in the studied energy range. The results for this transition are analyzed in an R-matrix formalism and extrapolated to the relevant Gamow energy of stellar helium burning, E0≃300 keV. In contrast to a previous analysis, the present extrapolation suggests a negligible contribution from this amplitude, View the MathML source. Additional data for cascade transitions to excited states at Ex=6.13, 6.92, and 7.12 MeV, respectively, as well as to the ground state were obtained and the corresponding S factors in the studied energy range are given.

Abstract

The rate of the hydrogen-burning carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle is controlled by the slowest process, 14N(p,γ )15O, which proceeds by capture to the ground and several excited states in 15O. Previous extrapolations for the ground state contribution disagreed by a factor 2, corresponding to 15% uncertainty in the total astrophysical S factor. At the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy, a new experiment on ground state capture has been carried out at 317.8, 334.4, and 353.3 keV center-of-mass energy. Systematic corrections have been reduced considerably with respect to previous studies by using a Clover detector and by adopting a relative analysis. The previous discrepancy has been resolved, and ground state capture no longer dominates the uncertainty of the total S factor.

Abstract

Solar neutrino fluxes depend both on astrophysical and on nuclear physics inputs, namely on the cross sections of the reactions responsible for neutrino production inside the Solar core. While the flux of solar 8B neutrinos has been recently measured at Superkamiokande with a 3.5% uncertainty and a precise measurement of 7Be neutrino flux is foreseen in the next future, the predicted fluxes are still affected by larger errors. The largest nuclear physics uncertainty to determine the fluxes of 8B and 7Be neutrinos comes from the 3He(alpha,gamma )7Be reaction. The uncertainty on its S-factor is due to an average discrepancy in results obtained using two different experimental approaches: the detection of the delayed γ rays from 7Be decay and the measurement of the prompt-gamma emission. Here we report on a new high precision experiment performed with both techniques at the same time. Thanks to the low background conditions of the Gran Sasso LUNA accelerator facility, the cross section has been measured at Ec.m. = 170, 106, and 93 keV, the latter being the lowest interaction energy ever reached. The S-factors from the two methods do not show any discrepancy within the experimental errors. An extrapolated S(0) = 0.560 +/- 0.017 keVbarn is obtained. Moreover, branching ratios between the two prompt-gamma transitions have been measure with 5–8% accuracy.

Abstract

The COMPTEL instrument performed the first mapping of the 1.809 MeV photons in the Galaxy, triggering considerable interest in determing the sources of interstellar 26Al. The predicted 26Al is too low compared to the observation, for a better understanding more accurate rates for the 25Mg(p; gamma)26Al reaction are required. The 25Mg(p;gamma)26Al reaction has been investigated at the resonances at Er= 745; 418; 374; 304 keV at Ruhr-Universitat-Bochum using a Tandem accelerator and a 4piNaI detector. In addition the resonance at Er = 189 keV has been measured deep underground laboratory at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, exploiting the strong suppression of cosmic background. This low resonance has been studied with the 400 kV LUNA accelerator and a HPGe detector. Abstract

The nuclear physics input from the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be cross section is a major uncertainty in the fluxes of 7Be and 8B neutrinos from the Sun predicted by solar models and in the 7Li abundance obtained in big-bang nucleosynthesis calculations. The present work reports on a new precision experiment using the activation technique at energies directly relevant to big-bang nucleosynthesis. Previously such low energies had been reached experimentally only by the prompt-gamma technique and with inferior precision. Using a windowless gas target, high beam intensity, and low background gamma-counting facilities, the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be cross section has been determined at 127, 148, and 169 keV center-of-mass energy with a total uncertainty of 4%. The sources of systematic uncertainty are discussed in detail. The present data can be used in big-bang nucleosynthesis calculations and to constrain the extrapolation of the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be astrophysical S factor to solar energies.

Abstract

The total cross section of 12C(alpha,gamma)16O was measured for the first time by a direct and ungated detection of the 16O recoils. This measurement in inverse kinematics using the recoil mass separator ERNA in combination with a windowless He gas target allowed to collect data with high precision in the energy range E=1.9 to 4.9 MeV. The data represent new information for the determination of the astrophysical S(E) factor.

Abstract

A second high current accelerator of 400 kV has been installed at the underground laboratory of Gran Sasso, called LUNA II. We describe this new facility as well as measurements of the proton beam characteristics: absolute energy, energy spread, and long-term energy stability. The absolute energy was determined to a precision of 7300 eV at Ep ¼ 130–400 keV using the energy of the capture g-ray transition of 12Cðp; gÞ13N as well as resonance energies at Ep ¼ 309–389 keV of 23Naðp; gÞ24Mg; 26Mgðp; gÞ27Al; and 25Mgðp; gÞ26Al: The resonance studies led to a proton energy spread of better than 100 eV and a long-term energy stability of 5 eV per hour
