1. Introduction to the NJIAS Himawari-8/9 Cloud Feature Dataset for climate and typhoon research

Abstract

The use of remote sensing methods to accurately measure cloud properties and their spatiotemporal changes has been widely welcomed in many fields of atmospheric research. The Nanjing Joint Institute for Atmospheric Sciences (NJIAS) Himawari-8/9 Cloud Feature Dataset (HCFD) provides a comprehensive description of cloud features over the East Asia and west North Pacific regions for the 7-year period from April 2016 to December 2022. Multiple cloud variables, such as cloud mask, phase/type, top height, optical thickness, and particle effective radius, as well as snow, dust, and haze masks, were generated from the visible and infrared measurements of the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on board the Japanese geostationary satellites Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 using a series of recently developed cloud retrieval algorithms. Verifications with the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) 1 km cloud layer product and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level-2 cloud product (MYD06) demonstrate that the NJIAS HCFD gives higher skill scores than the Japanese Himawari-8/9 operational cloud product for all cloud variables except for cloud particle effective radius. The NJIAS HCFD even outperforms the MYD06 in nighttime cloud detection; cloud-top height, pressure, and temperature estimation; and infrared-only cloud-top phase determination. All evaluations are performed at the nominal 2 km scale, not including the effects of sub-pixel cloudiness or very thin cirrus. Two examples are presented to demonstrate applications of the NJIAS HCFD for climate and typhoon research. 2. Occurrence of Kelvin–Helmholtz Instability at Lunar Distance Magnetopause: ARTEMIS Observation

Abstract

Kelvin–Helmholtz waves can be observed frequently at the near-Earth magnetopause and play an important role in the transport of particles, momentum, and energy from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. This work analyzes the occurrence of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) at lunar distance magnetopause, which has not been thoroughly studied currently based on Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun satellite observations, and it also investigates the effect of the upstream solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Statistical results show that (1) the occurrence rate is about 15% of the time at lunar distance, lower than at the flank magnetopause, and (2) the occurrence rate decreases with the magnetoacoustic Mach number, Alfvén Mach number, solar wind velocity, and dynamic pressure but only shows a slightly positive correlation with solar wind density. Unlike at the dayside magnetopause, the occurrence rate of KHI diminishes as the solar wind velocity increases at the lunar distance magnetopause, and (3) the occurrence rate decreases with IMF amplitude and is influenced by IMF orientation. As a function of the IMF clock angle, the occurrence rate reaches its maximum at ∼24% when the clock angle is zero. The statistical results are basically consistent with the currently accepted linear theory of KHI, except for a lower rate for higher-speed solar wind. This work contributes to understanding the excitation and evolution of KHI along the magnetopause and plasma transport process in the tail magnetopause.

Abstract

This study demonstrates a novel method to improve the density, interface bonding strength and mechanical properties of the B4Cp/Al composites by directly adding TiB2 to the material. Specifically, the (TiB2p+B4Cp)/Al composites with different TiB2 contents were successfully fabricated by ball milling (BM) and microwave sintering (MS). The results indicate that the developed (TiB2p+B4Cp)/Al possess a clean interface, with the absence of any reaction, thus, confirming microwave sintering as one of the preferred ways to prepare the (TiB2p+B4Cp)/Al composites. On adding TiB2, the densification in the microstructure is noted to initially increase, followed by a decrease. Overall, the TiB2 and B4C particles are noted to synergistically improve the densification as well as ameliorate the interfaces and microstructure. As a result, the optimized composites exhibit the compactness and Vickers hardness as high as 94.6% and 153.42HV0.3 respectively. The highest value of the compressive strength is determined to be 578.71 MPa at 50.0%. Further, no macroscopic fracture is noted to occur after 50% compression strain.

Abstract

Abstract Linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is a special case of a magnetic-field induced resistivity response, which has been reported in highly disordered semiconductor systems and in topological materials. In this work, we observe LMR effect in half-metallic perovskite Sr2CrMoO6 thin films, of which the maximum MR value exceeds +1600% at 2 K and 14 T. It is an unusual behavior in ferrimagnetic double perovskite material like Sr2CrMoO6, which are known for intrinsic tunneling-type negative magnetoresistance. In the thin films, the high carriers’ density (~1022 cm−3) and ultrahigh mobility (~104 cm2 V−1 s−1) provide a low-resistivity (~10 nΩ·cm) platform for spin-polarized current. Our DFT calculations and magnetic measurements further support the half-metal band structure. The LMR effect in Sr2CrMoO6 could possibly originate from transport behavior that is governed by the guiding center motion of cyclotron orbitals, where the magnetic domain structure possibly provides disordered potential. The ultrahigh mobility and LMR in this system could broaden the applications of perovskites, and introduce more research on metallic oxide ferri-/ferro-magnetic materials.

6. Microstructure and properties of the Nd2Fe14Bp/Al–Co composites fabricated via microwave sintering

Abstract

This study aimed to fabricate a new type of aluminum matrix composite exhibiting high strength, good magnetic property, and toughness to solve the issues on current magnetic materials, such as brittleness and high density. In this paper, the Nd2Fe14Bp/Al–Co composites with different cobalt (Co) contents (wt.%) are fabricated via microwave sintering. The effects of the Co content on the composite microstructures and properties are studied. The results indicate that at a 580 °C sintering temperature, 30 min sintering time, and 30 °C/min heating rate, with an increase in the Co content (0 → 1%→2.5%→5%→7.5%→10%), the compactness initially increases and then decreases and reaches the maximum of 94.5% for the 5%Co sample together with a smaller grain size. The composites mainly consist of Nd2Fe14B with various sizes, Co particles, and the Nd2(Fe,Co)14B phase. The interfacial deformation resistance of the 5%Co sample tested via nanoindention is 22.8% higher than that of the Co-free sample, which can facilitate in the interfacial strengthening. The microhardness, yield strength, and tensile strength of the 5%Co samples are 107.4 HV, 210.84 MPa, and 139.8 MPa, respectively. The remanence Br, coercive force Hcj, and maximum magnetic energy product (BH)max of the 5%Co sample are 0.37 T, 0.65 T, and 45.12 kJ/m3, respectively, which are 48.6%, 29.2%, and 63.9% higher than those of the Co-free sample. The significant increase in the magnetic properties is mainly attributed to the interactive coupling between the Co particle soft magnetic phase and Nd2Fe14B hard magnetic phase.

Abstract

Abstract The Tile Calorimeter is the hadron calorimeter covering the central region of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Approximately 10,000 photomultipliers collect light from scintillating tiles acting as the active material sandwiched between slabs of steel absorber. This paper gives an overview of the calorimeter’s performance during the years 2008–2012 using cosmic-ray muon events and proton–proton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with a total integrated luminosity of nearly 30 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 . The signal reconstruction methods, calibration systems as well as the detector operation status are presented. The energy and time calibration methods performed excellently, resulting in good stability of the calorimeter response under varying conditions during the LHC Run 1. Finally, the Tile Calorimeter response to isolated muons and hadrons as well as to jets from proton–proton collisions is presented. The results demonstrate excellent performance in accord with specifications mentioned in the Technical Design Report.

9. Teacher Buoyancy: Harnessing Personal and Contextual Resources in the Face of Everyday Challenges in Early Career Teachers' Work

Abstract

Early career teachers (ECTs) face great stress arising from the demands of the teaching job which are translated into everyday challenges. This article reports a mixed-methods study which examined teacher buoyancy, focusing on how ECTs harness personal and contextual resources when facing the everyday challenges of teaching. The quantitative data analysis showed six factors which constituted the personal and contextual dimensions of teacher buoyancy. The qualitative findings offered an in-depth understanding of these dimensions. ECTs counted on the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural emphases of personal resources in making immediate to short-term responses to everyday challenges. "Striving for professional growth" and "Taking care of one's well-being" were distal personal resources that enhanced ECTs' potential to manage these challenges. Accessibility to contextual resources and ECTs' utilisation of these resources constituted the dual facets of the contextual dimension of teacher buoyancy. Implications for initial teacher education and induction of ECTs are discussed.

Abstract

Available rabbit anti-NANOS2 antibodies failed to recognize the NANOS2 protein of goat origin though they showed better reactivity towards the same protein of human and mice origin. A specific antibody against goat NANOS2 is necessary to explore the biological functions of dairy goat NANOS2 protein. Recombinant NANOS2 protein (dairy goat origin) was expressed in E. coli (BL21). Anti-NANOS2 immunoglobulin Y (IgY; in chicken) was developed and evaluated. NANOS2 protein sequences between mice and dairy goat were compared using bioinformatics tools. The specific IgY titer attained the peak (≥ 1 : 128 000) after the 3rd booster injection, then it gradually decreased to 1 : 16 000 and remained stable. The specificity and sensitivity of anti-NANOS2 IgY was superior to rabbit anti-NANOS2 IgG. Though, the functional domain 63-116 or 62-115 of NANOS2 protein is highly conserved with 100% identity in dairy goat and mice, the considerable difference in sequence at region 18-61 was identified from the predicted epitopes. According to our survey, this is the first report on preparation of chicken IgY against NANOS2 protein and indicating the prerequisite of species specific NANOS2 antibodies due to epitopes difference in functionally conserved NANOS2 protein. Anti-NANOS2 IgY could be applied as a novel research tool in developmental biology.

Abstract

Objective: To study the effect of inter medin(IMD) on smooth muscle of rat seminal vesicles including the specific receptors and the signal pathways involved. Methods: The contraction of the seminal vesicle in response to norepinephrine (NE) and ADM2/IMD was studied by the organ bath method. The effects of antagonists for calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP), adrenomedullin (ADM) and IMD receptors, and inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase, [L-NG-Nitroarginine Methyl Ester, L-NAME) and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), KT5720] were also investigated. The first overshoot, amplitude, frequency and basal tone were measured. Results: There is no significant effect of IMD on the initial overshoot, frequency and the basal tone in the seminal vesicle contraction. Only the amplitude of the contraction induced by NE was inhibited by IMD. The IMD inhibitory actions on amplitude were completely blocked by hADM22-52 and L-NAME, but not by hCGRP8-37 or KT5720. Furthermore, the action was diminished by IMD17-47. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the inhibitory action of IMD on NE-induced seminal vesicle contraction was mediated via the ADM receptor(s) and the nitric oxide production pathway, partially by the IMD receptor, but not by the CGRP receptor and the cAMP-PKA pathway.

Abstract

SNPCEQer identifies and reports SNPs in sequences obtained from the Beckman CEQTM2000 DNA Analysis System. SNPCEQer aligns sequences obtained using CEQ2000 heterozygote detection analysis and reports discrepancies between individual sequences and the consensus sequence it generates from this set as SNPs when the individual base calls have highquality values. SNPCEQer reported comparable numbers of SNPs to the UNIX-based PolyPhred (148 vs. 165, respectively) in regions amplified from eight genes. A total of 21 different SNPs was discovered. Each gene region was analyzed in 96–306 samples. SNPCEQer was designed to operate from Windows NT®, making SNP detection more accessible to users without UNIX systems. SNPCEQer is available free of charge at http://innovation.swmed.edu.

14. Reflections from a Pedagogy of the Oppressed Book Reading Inquiry Circle

Abstract

This reflection essay reports on a book reading inquiry circle (BRIC) on Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by English as a second language (ESL) faculty from a college located in the Greater Seattle area. Since professional development is usually not provided for ESL faculty in basic skills programs due to lack of funding at the institutional level, the instructors involved in this BRIC engaged in critical language pedagogy as professional development on a divisional level for an 11-week quarter. The ESL faculty engaged in robust conversations about issues regarding adult literacy. The goal of this group was to determine how a culturally responsive curriculum for adult basic skills students could be curated through deep critical reflections and active dialogues through Freirean philosophy of the oppressor and oppressed. The faculty involved in this BRIC shared their reflections on critical pedagogy, as well as culturally responsive teaching, and how it is reflected in their praxis. The BRIC created opportunities for colleagues to share what they are teaching in the classroom and would allow instructors in our division to include different perspectives and research practices to create culturally relevant curriculum for immigrant, refugee, and nontraditional students in basic skills programs.

Abstract

Using a sample of $(225.2\pm 2.8)\times 10^6$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present results of a study of $J/\psi\rightarrow \gamma\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ and report the first observation of the isospin violating decay $J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Sigma}^{0}+c.c.$, in which $\bar{\Sigma}^{0}$ decays to $\gamma \bar{\Lambda}$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\bar{\Lambda}\Sigma^{0}$) = $(1.46\pm0.11\pm0.12) \times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Sigma^{0}}$) = $(1.37\pm0.12\pm0.11) \times10^{-5}$. We search for $\Lambda(1520) \rightarrow \gamma \Lambda$ decay, and find no evident signal, and an upper limit for the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}(1520)+c.c.)\times \mathcal{B}(\Lambda(1520)\rightarrow\gamma\Lambda)<4.1 \times10^{-6}$ is set at the 90% confidence level. We also report the observation of $\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ in $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \eta_{c}$, $\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ and measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}) =(1.16\pm0.12 (stat)\pm0.19(syst)\pm0.28(PDG))\times10^{-3}$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; This is a publication-version at Phys. Abstract

Limited data are available on the long-term clinical and immunologic consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection in people with HIV (PWH).We measured SARS-CoV-2-specific humoral and cellular responses in people with and without HIV recovering from COVID-19 ( n = 39 and n = 43, respectively) using binding antibody, surrogate virus neutralization, intracellular cytokine staining, and inflammatory marker assays. We identified individuals experiencing postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) and evaluated immunologic parameters. We used linear regression and generalized linear models to examine differences by HIV status in the magnitude of inflammatory and virus-specific antibody and T-cell responses, as well as differences in the prevalence of PASC.Among PWH, we found broadly similar SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody and T-cell responses as compared with a well matched group of HIV-negative individuals. PWH had 70% lower relative levels of SARS-CoV-2-specific memory CD8 + T cells ( P = 0.007) and 53% higher relative levels of PD-1+ SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4 + T cells ( P = 0.007). Higher CD4 + /CD8 + ratio was associated with lower PD-1 expression on SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8 + T cells (0.34-fold effect, P = 0.02). HIV status was strongly associated with PASC (odds ratio 4.01, P = 0.008), and levels of certain inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IP-10) were associated with persistent symptoms.We identified potentially important differences in SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4 + and CD8 + T cells in PWH and HIV-negative participants that might have implications for long-term immunity conferred by natural infection. HIV status strongly predicted the presence of PASC. Larger and more detailed studies of PASC in PWH are urgently needed.

Abstract

The response of cortical neurons to sensory stimuli is shaped both by past events (adaptation) and the expectation of future events (prediction). Here we employed a visual stimulus paradigm with different levels of predictability to characterise how expectation influences orientation selectivity in the primary visual cortex (V1) of mice. We recorded neuronal activity using two-photon calcium imaging (GCaMP6f) while animals viewed sequences of grating stimuli which either varied randomly in their orientations or rotated predictably with occasional transitions to an unexpected orientation. For single neurons and the population, there was significant enhancement in the gain of orientation-selective responses to unexpected gratings. This gain-enhancement for unexpected stimuli was prominent in both awake and anaesthetised mice. We implemented a computational model to demonstrate how trial-to-trial variability in neuronal responses were best characterised when adaptation and expectation effects were combined.

For commercial re-use, please contact journals.permissions@oup.com, Several CSF and blood biomarkers for genetic frontotemporal dementia have been proposed, including those reflecting neuroaxonal loss (neurofilament light chain and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain), synapse dysfunction [neuronal pentraxin 2 (NPTX2)], astrogliosis (glial fibrillary acidic protein) and complement activation (C1q, C3b). Determining the sequence in which biomarkers become abnormal over the course of disease could facilitate disease staging and help identify mutation carriers with prodromal or early-stage frontotemporal dementia, which is especially important as pharmaceutical trials emerge. We aimed to model the sequence of biomarker abnormalities in presymptomatic and symptomatic genetic frontotemporal dementia using cross-sectional data from the Genetic Frontotemporal dementia Initiative (GENFI), a longitudinal cohort study. Two-hundred and seventy-five presymptomatic and 127 symptomatic carriers of mutations in GRN, C9orf72 or MAPT, as well as 247 non-carriers, were selected from the GENFI cohort based on availability of one or more of the aforementioned biomarkers. Nine presymptomatic carriers developed symptoms within 18 months of sample collection ('converters'). Sequences of biomarker abnormalities were modelled for the entire group using discriminative event-based modelling (DEBM) and for each genetic subgroup using co-initialized DEBM. These models estimate probabilistic biomarker abnormalities in a data-driven way and do not rely on previous diagnostic information or biomarker cut-off points. Using cross-validation, subjects were subsequently assigned a disease stage based on their position along the disease progression timeline. CSF NPTX2 was the first biomarker to become abnormal, followed by blood and CSF neurofilament light chain, blood phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain, blood glial fibrillary acidic protein and finally CSF C3b and C1q. Biomarker orderings did not differ significantly between genetic subgroups, but more uncertainty was noted in the C9orf72 and MAPT groups than for GRN. Estimated disease stages could distinguish symptomatic from presymptomatic carriers and non-carriers with areas under the curve of 0.84 (95% confidence interval 0.80-0.89) and 0.90 (0.86-0.94) respectively. The areas under the curve to distinguish converters from non-converting presymptomatic carriers was 0.85 (0.75-0.95). Our data-driven model of genetic frontotemporal dementia revealed that NPTX2 and neurofilament light chain are the earliest to change among the selected biomarkers. Further research should investigate their utility as candidate selection tools for pharmaceutical trials. Abstract

Understanding synergies between neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies that modify dementia presentation represents an important knowledge gap.This multi-site, longitudinal, observational cohort study recruited participants across prevalent neurodegenerative diseases and cerebrovascular disease and assessed participants comprehensively across modalities. We describe univariate and multivariate baseline features of the cohort and summarize recruitment, data collection, and curation processes.We enrolled 520 participants across five neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases. Median age was 69 years, median Montreal Cognitive Assessment score was 25, median independence in activities of daily living was 100% for basic and 93% for instrumental activities. Spousal study partners predominated; participants were often male, White, and more educated. Milder disease stages predominated, yet cohorts reflect clinical presentation.Data will be shared with the global scientific community. Within-disease and disease-agnostic approaches are expected to identify markers of severity, progression, and therapy targets. Sampling characteristics also provide guidance for future study design.

Abstract

Background Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a common cause of encephalitis. We review the most recent evidence on this neuroimmune condition and autoantibody testing currently available. Content Clinical criteria, neuroimaging and electroencephalography can facilitate the diagnosis of AE prior to obtaining autoantibody testing results, and lead to a diagnosis of AE even in the absence of a recognized antibody. Early treatment of AE has been found to correlate with improved long-term functional and cognitive outcomes. We suggest a clinical approach to diagnosis based on the predominant area of nervous system involvement and the results of ancillary testing that are widely available. We also propose a 2-tiered approach to the acute management of probable or definite AE. We, finally, provide guidance on the long-term management of AE—a challenging and understudied area. Summary Much work remains to be done to improve the care of patients with AE. As understanding of the pathophysiology and predisposing factors underlying this condition steadily increases, a more evidence-based, targeted approach to the treatment of AE is still desired. Nonetheless, looking at the progress made over the past 2 decades, since the discovery of the first autoantibodies associated with AE, one cannot help but feel optimistic about the road ahead.

33. Temporal order judgment of multisensory stimuli in rat and human

Abstract

We do not fully understand the resolution at which temporal information is processed by different species. Here we employed a temporal order judgment (TOJ) task in rats and humans to test the temporal precision with which these species can detect the order of presentation of simple stimuli across two modalities of vision and audition. Both species reported the order of audiovisual stimuli when they were presented from a central location at a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA)s. While both species could reliably distinguish the temporal order of stimuli based on their sensory content (i.e., the modality label), rats outperformed humans at short SOAs (less than 100 ms) whereas humans outperformed rats at long SOAs (greater than 100 ms). Moreover, rats produced faster responses compared to humans. The reaction time data further revealed key differences in decision process across the two species: at longer SOAs, reaction times increased in rats but decreased in humans. Finally, drift-diffusion modeling allowed us to isolate the contribution of various parameters including evidence accumulation rates, lapse and bias to the sensory decision. Consistent with the psychophysical findings, the model revealed higher temporal sensitivity and a higher lapse rate in rats compared to humans. These findings suggest that these species applied different strategies for making perceptual decisions in the context of a multimodal TOJ task.

34. Review and meta-analysis of neuropsychological findings in autoimmune limbic encephalitis with autoantibodies against LGI1, CASPR2, and GAD65 and their response to immunotherapy

Abstract

Objectives: It is assumed that autoimmune limbic encephalitis (ALE) demonstrates distinct neuropsychological manifestations with differential responses to immunotherapy according to which associated autoantibody (AAB), if any, is identified. Towards investigating whether this is the case, this study aims to summarize respective findings from the primary literature on ALE with AABs binding to cell surface neural antigens and ALE with AABs against intracellular neural antigens. Methods: We chose ALE with AABs against leucine-rich, glioma inactivated protein 1 (LGI1) and contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) as the most frequent cell surface membrane antigens, and ALE with AABs to Embryonic Lethal, Abnormal Vision, Like 1 (ELAVL) proteins (anti-Hu) and glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) as the most frequent intracellular neural antigens. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched on March 1st, 2021 for neuropsychological test and -screening data from patients with ALE of these AAB-types. Findings were reviewed according to AAB-type and immunotherapy status and are presented in a review section and are further statistically evaluated and presented in a meta-analysis section in this publication. Results: Of the 1304 initial hits, 32 studies on ALE with AABs against LGI1, CASPR2, and GAD65 reporting cognitive screening data could be included in a review. In ALE with AABs against LGI1, CASPR2 and GAD65, memory deficits are the most frequently reported deficits. However, deficits in attention and executive functions including working memory, fluency, and psychological function have also been reported. This review shows that ALE patients with AABs against both LGI1 and CASPR2 show higher percentages of neuropsychological deficits compared to ALE patients with AABs against GAD65 before and after initiation of immunotherapy. However, the methodologies used in these studies were heterogenous, and longitudinal studies were not comparable. Moreover, 21 studies including ALE patients with AABs against LGI1 and GAD65 were also suitable for meta-analysis. No suitable study on ALE with AABs against ELAVL proteins could be identified. Meta-Analyses could be executed for cognitive screening data and only partially, due to the small number of studies. However, in statistical analysis no consistent effect of AAB or immunotherapy on performance in cognitive screening tests could be found. Conclusion: Currently, there is no definite evidence supporting the notion that different AAB-types of ALE exhibit distinct neuropsychological manifestations and respond differently to immunotherapy. Overall, we could not identify evidence for any effect of immunotherapy on cognition in ALE. More systematic, in-depth and longitudinal neuropsychological assessments of patients with different AAB-types of ALE are required in the future to investigate these aspects.

Abstract

Stoichiometric Cr2Se3 single crystals are particular layer-structured antiferromagnets, which possess a noncollinear spin configuration, weak ferromagnetic moments, moderate magnetoresistance (MR ∼14.3%), and poor metallic conductivity below the antiferromagnetic phase transition. Here, we report an interesting >16 000% colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in Ti (1.5 atomic percent) lightly doped Cr2Se3 single crystals. Such a CMR is approximately 1143 times larger than that of the stoichiometric Cr2Se3 crystals and is rarely observed in layered antiferromagnets and is attributed to the frustrated spin configuration. Moreover, the Ti doping not only dramatically changes the electronic conductivity of the Cr2Se3 crystal from a bad metal to a semiconductor with a gap of ∼15 meV but also induces a change in the magnetic anisotropy of the Cr2Se3 crystal from strong out-of-plane to weak in-plane. Further, magnetotransport measurements reveal that the low-field MR scales with the square of the reduced magnetization, which is a signature of CMR materials. The layered Ti:Cr2Se3 with the CMR effect could be used as two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure building blocks to provide colossal negative MR in spintronic devices.

The goal of this paper is further to study a kind of generalized vector inverse quasi-variational inequality problems and to obtain error bounds in terms of the residual gap function, the regularized gap function, and the global gap function by utilizing the relaxed monotonicity and Hausdorff Lipschitz continuity. These error bounds provide effective estimated distances between an arbitrary feasible point and the solution set of generalized vector inverse quasi-variational inequality problems.

Abstract

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between fasting blood glucose and new-onset hypertension and examine any synergistically effect modification with multiple risk factors.MethodsWe conducted post-hoc analyses of repeated-measures data in the original Dongzhi osteoporosis cohort study. In total, 3985 participants without hypertension aged 25–64 years were included in the current analyses. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess the relationship between fasting blood glucose and risk of new-onset hypertension after adjusting for pertinent covariates and autocorrelations among siblings.Results393 men (19.4%) and 398 women (20.3%) without hypertension at the baseline developed hypertension by the end of the study period. Compared to lower baseline fasting blood glucose levels (Q1–Q3: ConclusionsHigh fasting blood glucose may be significantly associated with risk of new-onset hypertension in Chinese women, especially in women with higher total cholesterol. Further randomized studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract

BackgroundFor patients with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARE) and ovarian teratoma, “conservative” surgical approaches (complete or partial unilateral oophorectomy or bilateral partial oophorectomies) are associated with clinical improvement. “Aggressive” ovarian resections (complete bilateral oophorectomy or “blind” ovarian resections without pre-operative evidence of teratoma) are also reported, although the evidence supporting these approaches is unclear.ObjectiveTo compare the one-year functional outcomes of patients with NMDARE who underwent conservative vs. aggressive ovarian resections.MethodsPatients with NMDARE undergoing ovarian resection between January 1st, 2012 and December 31st, 2021 were retrospectively identified from three North American tertiary care centers. Primary outcome was a modified Rankin Scale score of 0–2 one year after ovarian resection. Fisher exact and Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used to compare demographic features, disease characteristics, and functional outcomes between the two surgical groups. A fixed-effects meta-analysis of studies reporting functional outcomes based on surgical approach was also performed.ResultsTwenty-three patients were included. Eight underwent aggressive surgical management. There was a non-significant trend toward an association between aggressive surgical management and younger age-at-onset, higher baseline disease severity, and longer delays to treatment. There was no difference between “aggressive” (3/8, 38%) and “conservative” (11/15, 73%) management groups in achieving the primary outcome (OR95% = p = 0.18). Findings were similar when considering data from 52 patients in two published studies (RR = 0.74; CI95% = 0.48–1.13; p = 0.16).ConclusionsAggressive ovarian resection was not associated with improved outcomes in patients with NMDARE in this series. Group differences may have contributed, recognizing that patients who underwent aggressive resection tended to be sicker, with procedures performed later in the disease course. Based on available evidence, we advocate for function-sparing resection in patients with imaging-confirmed/suspected teratoma, and repeated multi-modal imaging in at-risk patients with NMDARE refractory to conventional treatment.

48. Visual awareness during the attentional blink is determined by representational similarity

Abstract

Our visual perception seems effortless, but the brain has a limited processing capacity which curtails the amount of sensory information that can be brought into conscious awareness at any moment in time. A widely studied exemplar of this limitation is the ‘attentional blink’ (AB), in which observers are unable to report the second of two rapidly sequential targets if it appears within 200-500 ms of the first. Despite the apparent ubiquity of the AB effect, its computational and neurophysiological underpinnings have remained elusive. Here we propose a simple computational model of temporal attention that unifies the AB with spatial and feature-based attention. We took a novel, integrative approach involving human psychophysics and functional brain imaging, along with neuronal recordings in mice to test this model. Specifically, we demonstrate that the AB only arises when visual targets have dissimilar representations in the brain but is absent when both targets have the same representation. Similarity in this context can be determined either by elementary features such as edge orientation, or by acquired, high-level factors such as numerical or alphabetical order. In this parsimonious model of the AB, attention to an initial target establishes a perceptual filter that is tuned to its unique representation in the brain. Subsequent items that match the filter remain available for conscious report, whereas those that do not match elude awareness altogether.
