Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3·106 km 2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic‐ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year‐round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3‐year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far‐field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this observatory is the only facility on Earth that measures elves with year‐round operation and full horizon coverage.

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Genetics ,QH426-470 - Abstract
Werner’s syndrome (WS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease, which is mainly characterized by scleroderma-like skin changes, juvenile cataracts, short stature, and signs of premature aging. We report a case of a 48-year-old male patient, who presents with cardinal signs of WS including high-pitched voice, sclerotic skin lesions mainly on feet, premature greying of scalp hair, bilateral cataracts, and “bird-like” facial appearance. In addition, the patient presents other clinical characteristics observed in patients with WS such as short stature, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypogonadism, parental consanguinity, and a history of a sibling with similar clinical characteristics. WRN gene sequencing identified the homozygous pathogenic variant NM_00553.4: c.2581C>T (NP_000544.2: pGln861Ter). This is the first case of WS reported in the Colombian population. We report this case to avoid misdiagnosis of this infrequent condition and allow timely identification of potential complications associated with premature aging, especially malignancies, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. Colombia has a great potential to produce biofuels based on biomass residues due to the importance of agroindustry in the country’s economy. The diversity of this industry guarantees the availability of different residues which are susceptible to be valorised through biological processes. There are several works, in the country, focused on biomass use to produce bioethanol and biodiesel. Nevertheless, the biohydrogen production using residual biomass has been scarcely studied. Dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion processes allow the degradation of substrates such as agricultural biomass and agroindustrial waste in order to produce hydrogen and methane, respectively. These residues are highly biodegradable, have low cost and have high availability. In this study, an assessment of the biohydrogen production potential by various organic residues (coffee mucilage, cocoa waste and pig manure) was carried out. The biohydrogen production potential of each residue was conducted in batch reactors (250 mL bottles). In order to maintain a mesophilic condition, an immersion thermostatic bath was used. Biological methane potential was evaluated to compare the energy recovery through hydrogen and methane for each substrate. Soluble products as volatile fatty acids and total reducing sugars were measured to characterize the dark fermentation process. The batch experiments were evaluated until the production rate of hydrogen and methane was reduced substantially. In all cases, the biomass demonstrated its versatility and capacity to produce biohydrogen. Maximum production was reached during dark fermentation process of coffee mucilage with a cumulative hydrogen production of338.9 mL and a maximum hydrogen production rate of 47.0 mL/d. However, the dark fermentation experiments showed instability with high standard deviation for production values. Despite the instability, the energy recovery from coffee mucilage through dark fermentation was 10 times above the energy produced by anaerobic digestion.

The observation of ultrahigh energy neutrinos (UHEνs) has become a priority in experimental astroparticle physics. UHEνs can be detected with a variety of techniques. In particular, neutrinos can interact in the atmosphere (downward-going ν) or in the Earth crust (Earth-skimming ν), producing air showers that can be observed with arrays of detectors at the ground. With the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can detect these types of cascades. The distinguishing signature for neutrino events is the presence of very inclined showers produced close to the ground (i.e., after having traversed a large amount of atmosphere). In this work we review the procedure and criteria established to search for UHEνs in the data collected with the ground array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. This includes Earth-skimming as well as downward-going neutrinos. No neutrino candidates have been found, which allows us to place competitive limits to the diffuse flux of UHEνs in the EeV range and above.

- Abstract
The new way of working that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to all companies in the world has been a true “whirlwind” of changes to the traditional status quo of operation of each one of them. Ritter and Pedersen (2020) studied eight business-to-business firms to understand these specific changes and found certain elements that indicate that the management practices of these companies had to change to adapt to this reality. The methodology was qualitative in two crucial strategies, the exhaustive documentary analysis in 25 companies around the world and semi-structured in-depth interviews in the entire world, using theoretical sample. The most important findings were the identification of different clusters of changes in business models and management practices characteristic of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The phenomenon of a platform owner entering its complementor spaces has been growing and, given its potential impact on the dynamics of competition in platform-mediated industries, has captured the interest of entrepreneurs, scholars, and policy makers. Empirical studies on the consequences of such platform owner entry have been scant so far and show mixed results for complementors. Drawing on competitive dynamics theory, our paper revisits an implicit assumption held in extant studies that allows us to hypothesize on dissimilar entry modes across owners, to study the implications of entry mode differences. We argue that how an owner enters its complementor spaces drives the level of competitive pressure that such an entry exerts on the affected complementors. In turn, this determines the size and valence of the repercussions on complementors’ product performance as well as their responses. Drawing on platform theory, we argue that an owner’s mode of entry into complementor spaces relates to that owner’s approach to platform governance. Using a unique panel dataset of health and fitness mobile apps in the Apple iOS and Google Play store, our results support our prediction that the mode of entry plays a significant role in the resulting complementor dynamics. We find contrasting modes of entry and resulting dynamics that arise between a platform that follows a closed and reigning approach to governance and one that follows an open and laissez-faire approach. Our findings help explain apparent contradictions in prior studies and extend our understanding of this increasingly common phenomenon in platform-mediated industries.

- Abstract
The use of video-based instruction in the language classroom is not new but it has undergone several developments over the last three decades due to the emergence of the internet, social media, virtual reality and digital games in the lives of students and teachers (Alrehaili and Al Osman 2019; Peterson, Thomas and Yamazaki 2021). Video and other forms of digital media have increasingly appealed to language teachers due to their potential for providing the type of learning materials required by contemporary theories of second language acquisition (SLA), especially those that stress the importance of meaningful interaction and context-based instruction rather than a primary focus on linguistic form (Dash and Kuddus 2020). Video technologies such as mobile phones and tablets have been a valuable source of learning materials as they allow classrooms faced with limited access to digital technologies to overcome these technical challenges through the use of portable devices which in turn have become increasingly normalised in and outside the language classroom (Makoe and Shandu 2018).

Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) poses challenging drug-drug interactions with immunosuppressant agents in transplant recipients. We aimed to determine the impact of specific antiretroviral regimens in clinical outcomes of HIV + kidney transplant recipients. Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted at a large academic center. Subjects included 58 HIV - to HIV + adult, first-time kidney transplant patients. The main intervention was ART regimen used after transplantation. The main outcomes assessed at one- and three-years were: patient survival, death-censored graft survival, and biopsy-proven acute rejection; we also assessed serious infections within the first six months post-transplant. Results: Patient and graft survival at three years were both 90% for the entire cohort. Patients receiving protease inhibitor (PI)-containing regimens had lower patient survival at one and three years than patients receiving PI-sparing regimens: 85% vs. 100% ( p=0.06) and 82% vs. 100% ( p=0.03), respectively. Patients who received PI-containing regimens had twelve times higher odds of death at 3 years compared to patients who were not exposed to PIs (odds ratio, 12.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.31-1602; p=0.02). Three-year death-censored graft survival was lower in patients receiving PI vs. patients on PI-sparing regimens (82 vs 100%, p=0.03). Patients receiving integrase strand transfer inhibitors-containing regimens had higher 3-year graft survival. There were no differences in the incidence of acute rejection by ART regimen. Individuals receiving PIs had a higher incidence of serious infections compared to those on PI-sparing regimens (39 vs. 8%, p=0.01). Conclusions: PI-containing ART regimens are associated with adverse outcomes in HIV + kidney transplant recipients.

In this study, NH3 adsorption isotherms for a commercial vanadium-based SCR catalyst coated on a monolith substrate were obtained using a gas flow reactor over a wide range of parameters which have not been performed before in a single study. The isotherms were obtained under different conditions, where adsorption temperature, NH3 concentration, water concentration, washcoat loading, and catalyst oxidation state were varied. For this purpose, a systematic data processing method was developed, which characterizes the dispersion and delay effects in the experimental setup using a residence time distribution model, and artifacts such as NH3 adsorbed in the experimental setup and uncertainties in the washcoat loading were removed. As a result, data from different catalyst samples were integrated, and adsorption isotherms with low data spread and well-defined regions were obtained. This allows the identification of the complex nature of the catalyst and dynamics, where multiple types of adsorption sites are present. For instance, the oxidized catalyst has 50% higher NH3 storage capacity compared to the reduced state of the sample. Moreover, water reduces the NH3 storage capacity at high concentrations (5.0%), whereas at low concentration (0.5%), water increases the NH3 adsorption capacity for an oxidized catalyst. The proposed data processing method can be extended for the analysis of further phenomena in catalysts studied using gas flow reactors, complementing current methods and providing information for models with extended validity and lower parameter correlations.

The use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) is increasingly more common as the availability of donor organs in relation to failing hearts is outstandingly limited. Infections are the most common complications in LVAD recipients, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus spp. Refractory LVAD-related infections are not uncommon as achieving adequate source control is often not feasible before heart transplantation. Evidence suggest that cefazolin plus ertapenem is effective in refractory methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia, but this approach has not been described in LVAD recipients. In this article, we report two cases of refractory MSSA bacteremia in LVAD recipients that were successfully treated with salvage therapy with cefazolin plus ertapenem and subsequent heart transplantation. This treatment strategy should be considered in patients with refractory LVAD-associated infection due to MSSA that are not responding to standard treatment.

Purpose To evaluate toxicity, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics, and cancer control of high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) as a salvage modality for men with locally recurrent prostate cancer, after primary HDR-BT failure. Material and methods Twelve patients with biochemical failure and a local relapse after 19 Gy single-fraction high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT 19 Gy) were salvaged using two HDR-BT fractions. Salvage treatment consisted of two HDR-BT applications, one week apart, delivering 12 Gy to the prostate per application (HDR-BT 12 × 2). Results Median age and initial PSA prior to rescue treatment were 74 years (range, 65-80) and 5.29 ng/ml (range, 2.37-16.40), respectively. Forty-two percent had a low-risk and 58% presented with intermediate-risk prostate cancer. Median follow-up period was 26 months (range, 10-42). Median time to PSA nadir was 12 months, with a median value of 0.21 ng/ml. Most of the patients (11 of 12) achieved a PSA decline ≥ 90%. Acute grade 2 genitourinary (GU) toxicity occurred in 4 patients (33.3%) and none presented with acute gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity. Two patients (16.7%) suffered from late GU grade 2 toxicity. No grade 3 toxicity were recorded. To date, 2 patients (16.7%) have experienced biochemical failure after salvage treatment. Conclusions Salvage HDR-BT 12 × 2 is a feasible and well-tolerated treatment, with acceptable toxicity rates for men with locally recurrent prostate cancer, who failed after HDR-BT with 19 Gy. Moreover, PSA kinetics and cancer control after salvage treatment suggest that this strategy might be efficacious in this clinical setting.

PurposeWell into the 21st century, it is difficult to deny the contribution that Mayan culture has made to the history of the world, and not only because of its contribution to universal culture with its architecture, astronomy and mathematics. Understanding the management practices of a Mayan dance (the dance of the Pochó) that has transcended over the years can give us an idea of the management practices carried out by an ancestral culture such as the Maya. The purpose of this article is to establish an initial conceptual relationship between the management process proposed by Henry Fayol (1916) and the management of a Mayan dance that has survived to the present day.Design/methodology/approachA specific ethnographic study was carried out in the municipality of Tenosique, Tabasco (Mexico) for two consecutive years. Research methods such as direct observation, researcher diaries, in-depth interviews and photographs were utilized that allowed a study of management practices.FindingsThanks to the cross-checking of the data obtained, it was possible to determine a theoretical-conceptual relationship between Fayol's management process and the Mayan dance studied. In fact, 12 specific management practices found in the four phases of the process were identified. In addition, with the ethnographic study it was possible to determine the levels of intensity and impact regarding the satisfaction of those attending and performing the dance.Research limitations/implicationsResearch limitations are due to result from the fact that the analysis corresponds to a single Mayan dance in a specific place (Tenosique) in the state of Tabasco, Mexico.Practical implicationsTo understand the management practices of the Mayan culture through the study of a dance that has remained alive until our days; this might be useful for the management practices of today's companies.Originality/valueIt is a pioneering study that analyzes a Mayan dance through the optics of management sciences.

Recent large-scale studies have concluded that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is superior to laparoscopic gastric greater curve plication (LGP) in weight loss outcomes and post-operative complications, but LGP is still being performed due to its purported financial advantage. Our analysis provides an investigation of cost at the time of operation, and a consideration of the financial implications of the complications and percentage of reoperation associated with each procedure. A systematic literature search was performed on the electronic medical databases PubMed and Embase. Extraction of data was performed using a pre-made form which included number of subjects, minor complications and rates, major complications and rates, reoperation rate, percent end weight loss, length of operating time, and length of hospital stay. Twenty-eight records were included after screening for inclusion criteria, representing data from 3242 patients (2668 with LGP and 574 with LSG). Minor and major complications of LGP were documented in 28.7% and 7.2% of cases, respectively, and the rate of reoperation was 10.2%. Minor and major complications of LSG were 19.4% and 4.1%, respectively, and the rate of reoperation was 3.3%. Based on analysis of operating time and length of hospital stay means, each LGP operation was calculated to cost $10,730 USD, and LSG cost $14,074. LGP has higher rates of complications and reoperation, and less %EWL compared with LSG. Despite modest initial cost benefit of LGP, when considering costs associated with the complications and reoperations, we conclude that LSG is superior to LGP in outcome and cost-effectiveness.

Background Remdesivir is efficacious for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults, but data in pregnant women are limited. We describe outcomes in the first 86 pregnant women with severe COVID-19 who were treated with remdesivir. Methods The reported data span 21 March to 16 June 2020 for hospitalized pregnant women with polymerase chain reaction–confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and room air oxygen saturation ≤94% whose clinicians requested remdesivir through the compassionate use program. The intended remdesivir treatment course was 10 days (200 mg on day 1, followed by 100 mg for days 2–10, given intravenously). Results Nineteen of 86 women delivered before their first dose and were reclassified as immediate “postpartum” (median postpartum day 1 [range, 0–3]). At baseline, 40% of pregnant women (median gestational age, 28 weeks) required invasive ventilation, in contrast to 95% of postpartum women (median gestational age at delivery 30 weeks). By day 28 of follow-up, the level of oxygen requirement decreased in 96% and 89% of pregnant and postpartum women, respectively. Among pregnant women, 93% of those on mechanical ventilation were extubated, 93% recovered, and 90% were discharged. Among postpartum women, 89% were extubated, 89% recovered, and 84% were discharged. Remdesivir was well tolerated, with a low incidence of serious adverse events (AEs) (16%). Most AEs were related to pregnancy and underlying disease; most laboratory abnormalities were grade 1 or 2. There was 1 maternal death attributed to underlying disease and no neonatal deaths. Conclusions Among 86 pregnant and postpartum women with severe COVID-19 who received compassionate-use remdesivir, recovery rates were high, with a low rate of serious AEs., Among 86 pregnant and postpartum women with severe coronavirus disease 2019 who received compassionate-use remdesivir, recovery rates from serious infection were high with a low rate of serious adverse events.

Introduction To assess pain response rate (RR) and quality of life (QoL), in patients with moderate/severe neuropathic pain (NP) due to bone metastasis (BM) undergoing palliative 3D radiotherapy plus tapentadol. Methods We conducted a prospective multicentre pilot study. Patients were assessed before radiotherapy using the validated questionnaire (Douleur Neuropathique en 4 questions). Response to radiotherapy (8 Gy-30 Gy/1-10fr) at one and two months was assessed according the International Bone Metastases Consensus criteria. Inclusion criteria radiological evidence of BM, NP according to DN4 (cut-off score ≥ 4), no spinal cord compression, worst pain score ≥ 5/10. Nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test compared changes in QoL among response groups. Results Seventeen patients (13 men, 4 woman), median age 67 years (42-81), were included. Pre-treatment median pain severity was 7.5 (5-10). Median dose of tapentadol administered before radiotherapy was 100 mg/24 h (100-300 mg). Overall RR 1 month after radiotherapy was 10/16 = 62.5%: 3/16 (18.8%) achieving a complete response (CR) and 7/16 (43.8%) a partial response (PR). Overall RR 2 months after RT was 5/10 (50%): 10% a CR and 40% a PR. ITT RR for this study at 1 and 2 months was 10/17 = 59% and 5/17 = 29%, respectively. Patients responding to radiotherapy had significant improvement in EORTC QLQ-C30 emotional functioning (EF) (p = 0.025) and fatigue symptom scale scores (p = 0.035) one month after radiotherapy. Painful site symptom QLQ-BM22 scores improved 2 months after radiotherapy (p = 0.024). Conclusions Palliative radiotherapy plus tapentadol shows an acceptable pain response and QoL improvement especially regarding EF, fatigue and painful site symptom scales in patients with moderate/severe NP due to BM. Therefore, it could be an alternative to manage NP in daily practice.

atmospheric_science - Abstract
The research presents the inter-comparison of atmospheric variables measured by 9 automatic meteorological stations. This set of data was compared with the measurements of other meteorological stations in order to standardize the values that must be adjusted when taken to different areas. The data of a set of a total of 9 GMX500, which measures conventional meteorological variables, and 10 WS100 sensors, which measures precipitation parameters. The automatic stations were set up at the Huancayo Observatory (Geophysical Institute of Peru) for a period of 5 months. The data set of GMX500 were evaluated comparing with the average of the 9 sensors and the WS100 was compared with a optical disdrometer Parsivel2. The temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed, rainfall rate, and drop size distribution was evaluated. A pair of GMX500 sensors presented high data dispersion, it was found found that the errors came from a bad configuration; once this problem was solved, good agreement was archived, with low RMSE and high correlation. I was found that the WS100 sensors overestimate the precipitation with a percent bias close to 100% and the differences increase with the greater intensity of rain. The DSD retrieved by WS100 have unrealistic behavior with higher concentrations in diameters of 1 mm and 5 mm, in addition to a flattened curve.
