The HOLMES experiment aims to directly measure the ν mass studying the 163Ho electron capture decay spectrum developing arrays of TES-based microcalorimeters implanted with O(300 Bq/detector) Ho atoms. The embedding of the source inside detectors is a crucial step of the experiment. Because the 163Ho production process (neutron irradiation of a 162Er sample) is not perfectly free from impurities, Ho source must be separated from a lot of contaminants. A chemical processing removes every species other than Ho, but it is not sufficient to remove all isotope-related background sources: Indeed, 166mHo beta decay can produce fake signal in the region of interest. For this reason, a dedicated implantation system was set up. It is designed to achieve the separation power better than 5σ at 163/166 a.m.u. allowing an efficient Ho ions implantation inside microcalorimeter absorbers. Its main components are a 50 kV sputter-based ion source, a magnetic dipole and a target chamber. A specially designed co-evaporation system was designed to “grow” the gold microcalorimeter absorber during the implantation process, increasing the maximum achievable activity which can be implanted. The machine performances were evaluated by means of calibration runs using 63Cu/65Cu and Mo beams. A special care was given to the study of the more effective way to populate source plasma with Ho ions obtained from different Ho compounds by sputtering process. In this work, the machine development and commissioning are described.

The HOLMES experiment aims to directly measure the ν mass studying the 163Ho electron capture decay spectrum, using arrays of TES-based micro-calorimeters implanted with O(102 Bq/detector) 163Ho atoms. The neutron irradiation of 162Er enriched samples, used for the production of 163Ho, also generates radioactive contaminants. Chemical processes have been developed to extract the Ho fraction with high efficiency. The radioactive Ho isotope 166mHo is also present in the final sample and could significantly contribute to background events in the final spectrum. For this reason a dedicated implantation/mass separator has been set up and commissioned. It is designed to achieve more than 5 σ separation 163/166 u simultaneously allowing an efficient 163Ho atoms embedding inside micro-calorimeter absorbers. Its main components are a 50 kV sputter-based ion source, a magnetic dipole and a target chamber. A specially designed co-evaporation system has been implemented to deposit gold on the detector absorbers during implantation to overcome the 163Ho source saturation problem. The system performances in terms of achievable beam current, profile and mass separation have been evaluated by means of calibration runs using Cu, Mo, Au and 165Ho beams. An intensive study was done to optimize the target containing 163Ho in order to achieve a large fraction of ionized Ho in the beam. In this work, the machine development and commissioning will be described.

Highly localized and persistent back-building mesoscale convective systems represent one of the most dangerous flash-flood-producing storms in the north-western Mediterranean area. Substantial warming of the Mediterranean Sea in recent decades raises concerns over possible increases in frequency or intensity of these types of events as increased atmospheric temperatures generally support increases in water vapour content. However, analyses of the historical record do not provide a univocal answer, but these are likely affected by a lack of detailed observations for older events. In the present study, 20th Century Reanalysis Project initial and boundary condition data in ensemble mode are used to address the feasibility of performing cloud-resolving simulations with 1 km horizontal grid spacing of a historic extreme event that occurred over Liguria: the San Fruttuoso case of 1915. The proposed approach focuses on the ensemble Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model runs that show strong convergence over the Ligurian Sea (17 out of 56 members) as these runs are the ones most likely to best simulate the event. It is found that these WRF runs generally do show wind and precipitation fields that are consistent with the occurrence of highly localized and persistent back-building mesoscale convective systems, although precipitation peak amounts are underestimated. Systematic small north-westward position errors with regard to the heaviest rain and strongest convergence areas imply that the reanalysis members may not be adequately representing the amount of cool air over the Po Plain outflowing into the Ligurian Sea through the Apennines gap. Regarding the role of historical data sources, this study shows that in addition to reanalysis products, unconventional data, such as historical meteorological bulletins, newspapers, and even photographs, can be very valuable sources of knowledge in the reconstruction of past extreme events.

Gaining a deeper physical understanding of the high-impact weather events which repeatedly affected the Western Mediterranean Basin in recent years on the coastal areas of eastern Spain, southern France and northern Italy is strongly motivated by the social request to reduce the casualties and the economical impacts due to these highly localized and hardly predictable phenomena. In October 2014, an extreme event hit Genoa city centre, less than 3 years after a very similar event, which occurred in November 2011. Taking advantage of the availability of both observational data and modelling results at the micro-alpha meteorological scale, this article provides insights about the triggering mechanism and the subsequent spatio-temporal evolution of the Genoa 2014 back-building Mesoscale Convective System. The major finding is the effect of a virtual mountain created over the Ligurian Sea by the convergence of a cold and dry jet outflowing from the Po valley and a warm and moist low-level southeasterly jet within the planetary boundary layer.

International audience; The absolute neutrino mass is still an unknown parameter in the modern landscape of particle physics. The HOLMES experiment aims at exploiting the calorimetric approach to directly measure the neutrino mass through the kinematic measurement of the decay products of the weak process decay of $^{163}$Ho. This low energy decaying isotope, in fact, undergoes electron capture emitting a neutrino and leaving the daughter atom, $^{163}$Dy$^*$, in an atomic excited state. This, in turn, relaxes by emitting electrons and, to a considerably lesser extent, photons. The high-energy portion of the calorimetric spectrum of this decay is affected by the non-vanishing neutrino mass value. Given the small fraction of events falling within the region of interest, to achieve a high experimental sensitivity on the neutrino mass, it is important to have a high activity combined with a very small undetected pileup contribution. To achieve these targets, the final configuration of HOLMES foresees the deployment of a large number of $^{163}$Ho ion-implanted TESs characterized by an ambitiously high activity of 300 Hz each. In this paper, we outline the status of the major tasks that will bring HOLMES to achieve a statistical sensitivity on the neutrino mass as low as 2 eV/c$^2$.

The assessment of neutrino absolute mass scale is still a crucial challenge in today particle physics and cosmology. Beta or electron capture spectrum end-point study is currently the only experimental method which can provide a model independent measurement of the absolute scale of neutrino mass. HOLMES is an experiment funded by the European Research Council to directly measure the neutrino mass. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the electron capture decay of the artificial isotope $^{163}$Ho. In a calorimetric measurement the energy released in the decay process is entirely contained into the detector, except for the fraction taken away by the neutrino. This approach eliminates both the issues related to the use of an external source and the systematic uncertainties arising from decays on excited final states. The most suitable detectors for this type of measurement are low temperature thermal detectors, where all the energy released into an absorber is converted into a temperature increase that can be measured by a sensitive thermometer directly coupled with the absorber. This measurement was originally proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only in the last decade the technological progress in detectors development has allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES plans to deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted $^{163}$Ho nuclei. The achievable neutrino mass statistical sensitivity is expected in the eV range, thereby making HOLMES an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach as an alternative to spectrometry. HOLMES will also establish the potential of this approach to achieve a sub-eV sensitivity. HOLMES is designed to collect about 3 × 1013 decays with an instrumental energy resolution around 1 eV FWHM and a time resolution around 1 µs. To achieve this in three years of measuring time, HOLMES is going to deploy 16 sub-arrays of TES microcalorimeters. Each sub-array has 64 pixels ion implanted with 163Ho nuclei to give a pixel activity of 300 Bq per pixel. The TES arrays are read out using microwave multiplexed rf-SQUIDs in combination with a Software Designed Radio data acquisition system. The commissioning of the first implanted sub-array is scheduled for 2018 and it will provide first high statistics data about the EC decay of 163Ho together with a preliminary limit on the neutrino mass. In this contribution we outline the HOLMES project with its physics reach and technical challenges, along with its status and perspectives. In particular we will present the status of the HOLMES activities concerning the 163Ho isotope production by neutron irradiation and purification, the TES pixel design and optimization, the multiplexed array read-out characterization, the cryogenic set-up installation, and the setting up of the mass separation and ion implantation system for the isotope embedding in the TES absorbers.

From 1970 to 2012, about 9,000 high-impact weather events were reported globally, causing the loss of 1.94 million lives and damage of $2.4 trillion (U.S. dollars). The scientific community is called to action to improve the predictive ability of such events and communicate forecasts and associated risks both to affected populations and to those making decisions. At the heart of this challenge lies the ability to have easy access to hydrometeorological data and models and to facilitate the necessary collaboration between meteorologists, hydrologists, and computer science experts to achieve accelerated scientific advances. Two European Union (EU)-funded projects, Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorology (DRIHM) and DRIHM to United States of America (DRIHM2US), sought to help address this challenge by developing a prototype e-science environment providing advanced end-to-end services (models, datasets, and postprocessing tools), with the aim of paving the way to a step change in how scientists can approach studying these events, with a special focus on flood events in complex topographic areas. This paper describes the motivation and philosophy behind this prototype e-science environment together with certain key components, focusing on hydrometeorological aspects that are then illustrated through actionable research for a critical flash flood event that occurred in October 2014 in Liguria, Italy.

HOLMES is a new experiment aiming at directly measuring the neutrino mass with a sensitivity below 2 eV. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the decay of $^{163}$Ho. The calorimetric measurement eliminates systematic uncertainties arising from the use of external beta sources, as in experiments with spectrometers. This measurement was proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only recently the detector technological progress has allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES will deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted $^{163}$Ho nuclei. HOLMES, besides being an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach, will also establish the potential of this approach to extend the sensitivity down to 0.1 eV and lower. In its final configuration HOLMES will collect about $3\cdot 10^{13}$ decays with 1000 detectors characterized by an instrumental energy resolution of the order of few eV and a time resolution of few microseconds. To embed the $^{163}$Ho into the gold absorbers a custom mass separator ion implanter is being developed. The detectors used for the HOLMES experiment will be Mo/Cu bilayers TESs (Transition Edge Sensors) on SiN$_x$ membrane with gold absorbers. Microwave multiplexed rf-SQUIDs are the best available technique to read out large array of such detectors. An extensive R&D activity is in progress in order to maximize the multiplexing factor while preserving the performances of the individual detectors. The current activities are focused on the the single detector performances optimization and on the $^{163}$Ho isotope production and embedding. A preliminary measurement of a sub-array of $4\times 16$ detectors is planned late in 2017. In this contribution we present the HOLMES project with its technical challenges, its status and perspectives.

The city of Genoa, which places between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine mountains (Liguria, Italy) was rocked by severe flash floods on the 4th of November, 2011. Nearly 500 mm of rain, a third of the average annual rainfall, fell in six hours. Six people perished and millions of Euros in damages occurred. The synoptic-scale meteorological system moved across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Mediterranean generating floods that killed 5 people in Southern France, before moving over the Ligurian Sea and Genoa producing the extreme event studied here. Cloud-permitting simulations (1 km) of the finger-like convective system responsible for the torrential event over Genoa have been performed using Advanced Research Weather and Forecasting Model (ARW-WRF, version 3.3). Two different microphysics (WSM6 and Thompson) as well as three different convection closures (explicit, Kain–Fritsch, and Betts–Miller–Janjic) were evaluated to gain a deeper understanding of the physical processes underlying the observed heavy rain event and the model's capability to predict, in hindcast mode, its structure and evolution. The impact of forecast initialization and of model vertical discretization on hindcast results is also examined. Comparison between model hindcasts and observed fields provided by raingauge data, satellite data, and radar data show that this particular event is strongly sensitive to the details of the mesoscale initialization despite being evolved from a relatively large scale weather system. Only meso-γ details of the event were not well captured by the best setting of the ARW-WRF model and so peak hourly rainfalls were not exceptionally well reproduced. The results also show that specification of microphysical parameters suitable to these events have a positive impact on the prediction of heavy precipitation intensity values.

Flash floods induced by extreme rainfall events represent one of the most life-threatening phenomena in the Mediterranean. While their catastrophic ground effects are well documented by postevent surveys, the extreme rainfall events that generate them are still difficult to observe properly. Being able to collect observations of such events will help scientists to better understand and model these phenomena. The recent flash floods that hit the Liguria region (Italy) between the end of October and beginning of November 2011 give us the opportunity to use the measurements available from a large number of sensors, both ground based and spaceborne, to characterize these events. In this paper, the authors analyze the role of the key ingredients (e.g., unstable air masses, moist low-level jets, steep orography, and a slow-evolving synoptic pattern) for severe rainfall processes over complex orography. For the two Ligurian events, this role has been analyzed through the available observations (e.g., Meteosat Second Generation, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, the Italian Radar Network mosaic, and the Italian rain gauge network observations). The authors then address the possible role of sea–atmosphere interactions and propose a characterization of these events in terms of their predictability.

The SWIPE detector of the Ballon Borne Mission LSPE (see e.g. the contribution of P. de Bernardis et al. in this conference) intends to measure the primordial ’B-mode’ polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). For this scope microwave telescopes need sensitive cryogenic bolometers with an overall equivalent noise temperature in the nK range. The detector is a spiderweb bolometer based on transition edge sensor and followed by a SQUID to perform the signal readout. This contribution will concentrate on the design, description and first tests on the front-end electronics which processes the squid output (and controls it). The squid output is first amplified by a very low noise preamplifier based on a discrete JFET input differential architecture followed by a low noise CMOS operational amplifier. Equivalent input noise density is 0.6 nV/Hz and bandwidth extends up to at least 2 MHz. Both devices (JFET and CMOS amplifier) have been tested at liquid nitrogen. The second part of the contribution will discuss design and results of the control electronics, both the flux locked loop for the squid and the slow control chain to monitor and set up the system will be reviewed.

HOLMES is a new experiment to directly measure the neutrino mass with a sensitivity as low as 0.4 eV. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the electron capture decay of 163 Ho. HOLMES will deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted 163 Ho nuclei. HOLMES baseline detector is an array of 1000 microcalorimeters each with an implanted 163 Ho activity of about 300 Bq, an energy resolution FWHM of about 1 eV at the spectrum end-point ( Q ≈ 2.5 keV), and a time resolution of about 1 μs. Matching these performances requires a careful optimization of all components, from the microcalorimeters to the signal processing algorithms. We outline here the project technical challenges and the present status of the development.

The development of a Timing Counter detector designed for the MEGII upgrade of the MEG experiment, which strives to improve the sensitivity on the μ + → e + γ decay of an order of magnitude, is presented. It is based on two sets of counters (sectors) arranged on a semi-cylindrical structure; each sector consists of 256 counters. Each counter consists of tile of fast scintillator with a dual-side read-out based on SiPM arrays in series connection. The high granularity has two advantages: optimized size for achieving high resolution (75 ps) for the single counter, and a signal e + crosses several counters, so that resolution improves by averaging multiple time measurements. A prototype has been built and tested both in BTF and PSI facilities in order to prove the multi-hit scheme in MEG-like beam conditions. A 35 ps resolution with eight hits has been obtained with a e + beam at 100 kHz. The first sector will be tested in the MEG II pre-engineering run planned at the end of 2015.

On the 4 November 2011 a flash flood event hit the area of Genoa with dramatic consequences. Such an event represents, from the meteorological and hydrological perspective, a paradigm of flash floods in the Mediterranean environment. The hydro-meteorological probabilistic forecasting system for small and medium size catchments in use at the Civil Protection Centre of Liguria region exhibited excellent performances for the event, by predicting, 24–48 h in advance, the potential level of risk associated with the forecast. It greatly helped the decision makers in issuing a timely and correct alert. In this work we present the operational outputs of the system provided during the Liguria events and the post event hydrological modelling analysis that has been carried out accounting also for the crowd sourcing information and data. We discuss the benefit of the implemented probabilistic systems for decision-making under uncertainty, highlighting how, in this case, the multi-catchment approach used for predicting floods in small basins has been crucial.

This paper analyses the predictive ability of quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) and the so-called "poor-man" rainfall probabilistic forecasts (RPF). With this aim, the full set of warnings issued by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) for potentially-dangerous events due to severe precipitation has been analysed for the year 2008. For each of the 37 warnings, the QPFs obtained from the limited-area model MM5 have been verified against hourly precipitation data provided by the rain gauge network covering Catalonia (NE of Spain), managed by SMC. For a group of five selected case studies, a QPF comparison has been undertaken between the MM5 and COSMO-I7 limited-area models. Although MM5's predictive ability has been examined for these five cases by making use of satellite data, this paper only shows in detail the heavy precipitation event on the 9–10 May 2008. Finally, the "poor-man" rainfall probabilistic forecasts (RPF) issued by SMC at regional scale have also been tested against hourly precipitation observations. Verification results show that for long events (>24 h) MM5 tends to overestimate total precipitation, whereas for short events (≤24 h) the model tends instead to underestimate precipitation. The analysis of the five case studies concludes that most of MM5's QPF errors are mainly triggered by very poor representation of some of its cloud microphysical species, particularly the cloud liquid water and, to a lesser degree, the water vapor. The models' performance comparison demonstrates that MM5 and COSMO-I7 are on the same level of QPF skill, at least for the intense-rainfall events dealt with in the five case studies, whilst the warnings based on RPF issued by SMC have proven fairly correct when tested against hourly observed precipitation for 6-h intervals and at a small region scale. Throughout this study, we have only dealt with (SMC-issued) warning episodes in order to analyse deterministic (MM5 and COSMO-I7) and probabilistic (SMC) rainfall forecasts; therefore we have not taken into account those episodes that might (or might not) have been missed by the official SMC warnings. Therefore, whenever we talk about "misses", it is always in relation to the deterministic LAMs' QPFs.

A line of development of numerical meteorological forecast, common to many European and American Meteorological Organizations, schedules a drastic reduction of the grid spacing for the realization of limited-area predictions. The scientific community has been discussing such an issue whether this approach can be of real advantage for the solution of the problems of the uncertainty of the decision-maker. The extraordinary enhancement of the computer power could indeed promote this drastic reduction of the modeling horizontal resolution just because “nowadays it is possible”. However this “brute-force” approach to the question of the solution of the problem of nowcasting does not guarantee a priori improvement of forecast skill. In this framework, deep moist convective processes in simplified atmospheric scenarios (e.g. supercell) are studied in this paper by means of high-resolution numerical simulations with COSMO-Model. Particular attention is paid to determine whether and at which extent the convection-resolving solutions, in the range of grid spacing between 1 km and 100 m, statistically converge from a turbulence perspective with respect to flow field structure, transport properties and precipitation forecast. Different turbulence closures, microphysics settings and grid spacings are combined and their joint impact on the spatial–temporal properties of storm processes is discussed.

An exponential improvement of numerical weather prediction (NWP) models was observed during the last decade (Lynch, 2008). Civil Protection (CP) systems exploited Meteo services in order to redeploy their actions towards the prediction and prevention of events rather than towards an exclusively response-oriented mechanism1. Nevertheless, experience tells us that NWP models, even if assisted by real time observations, are far from being deterministic. Complications frequently emerge in medium to long range forecasting, which are subject to sudden modifications. On the other hand, short term forecasts, if seen through the lens of criminal trials2, are to the same extent, scarcely reliable (Molini et al., 2009). One particular episode related with wrong forecasts, in the Italian panorama, has deeply frightened CP operators as the NWP model in force missed a meteorological adversity which, in fact, caused death and dealt severe damage in the province of Vibo Valentia (2006). This event turned into a very discussed trial, lasting over three years, and intended against whom assumed the legal position of guardianship within the CP. A first set of data is now available showing that in concomitance with the trial of Vibo Valentia the number of alerts issued raised almost three folds. We sustain the hypothesis that the beginning of the process of overcriminalization (Husak, 2008) of CPs is currently increasing the number of false alerts with the consequent effect of weakening alert perception and response by the citizenship (Brezntiz, 1984). The common misunderstanding of such an issue, i.e. the inherent uncertainty in weather predictions, mainly by prosecutors and judges, and generally by whom deals with law and justice, is creating the basis for a defensive behaviour3 within CPs. This paper intends, thus, to analyse the social and legal relevance of uncertainty in the process of issuing meteo-hydrological alerts by CPs. Many meteorological organizations plan to substantially increase the resolution of the limited-area models used for severe weather prediction. Such an approach does not guarantee a priori the reduction of the uncertainty of the decision maker in the prediction of severe weather impact. A deep moist convective process, a supercell, is studied in a simplified atmospheric scenario by means of high-resolution numerical simulations with the Consortium for Small-Scale Modeling (COSMO) model. Different turbulence closure models and their impact on the spatiotemporal properties of storm processes are discussed. In the range of grid spacing between 1 km and 100 m, also termed “terra incognita,” the simulations of a supercell converge with respect to flow field structure, transport properties, and precipitation fields when a turbulence closure derived from large-eddy simulation (LES) is used. In contrast, more simplified turbulence closures such as 1D (vertical) boundary layer approximations yield substantially worse results than the 0.2-km LES reference simulation.

Computer power has grown to the point that very-fine-mesh mesoscale modelling is now possible. Going down through scales is clumsily supposed to reduce uncertainty and to improve the predictive ability of the models. This work provides a contribution to understand how the uncertainty in the numerical weather prediction (NWP) of severe weather events is affected by increasing the model grid resolution and by choosing a parameterization which is able to represent turbulent processes at such finer scales. A deep moist convective scenario, a supercell, in a simplified atmospheric setting is studied by mean of high resolution numerical simulations with COSMO-Model. Different turbulent closures are used and their impacts on the space-time properties of convective fields are discussed. The convective-resolving solutions adopting Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulent closure converge with respect to the overall flow field structure when grid spacing is properly reduced. By comparing the rainfall fields produced by the model on larger scales with those at the convergence scales it's possible to size up the uncertainty introduced by the modelling itself on the predicted ground effects in such simplified scenario.

Forecast verification is a long-standing issue of the whole meteorologists' community. A common definition of a truly satisfying prediction skill has not been achieved so far. Even the definition of "event", due to its spatio-temporal discontinuity, is highly affected by uncertainty. Moreover, decision-making demands numerical weather prediction modellers to provide information about the "inner" uncertainty, i.e. the degree of uncertainty related to the choice of a specific setting of the model (microphysics, turbulence scheme, convective closure, etc.). Most European Mediterranean countries, due to dense development, steep coastal orography and short hydrological response time of the drainage basins, have to deal very frequently with flash floods and sudden shallow land sliding impacting on urban areas. Civil protection organizations are in place to issue early warnings in order to allow local authorities and population to take precautionary measures. To do so in Mediterranean catchments, hydrologists are required to use numerical rainfall predictions in place of rainfall observations on large European catchments. Estimating the measure of uncertainty is for this reason crucial. The goal of this work is to propose an objective evaluation of the performance of the currently operational weather prediction model COSMO-I7 over quite a long time period and to check forecast verification at different space-time scales by the comparison of predictions with observations. Due to large investments in the last years, in fact, Italy has built up one of the most dense hourly-reporting network of rain gauges. The network has a mean space density of about 1/100 km2, very similar to the horizontal resolution of currently operating limited area models. An objective procedure to identify and compare the extreme events of precipitation has been applied to the full set of rainfall observations and over the severe events forecast by COSMO-I7 and announced in official warnings by Italian Civil Protection Department. The procedure allows to classify rainfall events as long-lived and spatially distributed or as having a shorter duration and a minor spatial extent. We show that long-lived events are less affected by overall uncertainty than short-lived ones, yet the inner uncertainty of the event affects both.

A new radar simulation model based on a three-dimensional polarimetric radar simulator model (RSM-POL) coupled with a very high resolution cloud resolving model is presented. RSM-POL is able to model reflectivity measurements by using some numerically-generated meteorological fields as input: temperature, pressure, water vapour content, cloud water content, cloud ice content and rain, snow and graupel sedimentation fluxes and the number density intercept parameter No for each precipitating species. In this study, the radar simulation model is applied to assess the influence of attenuation on radar measurements at C-band and its effect (1) in the computation of rainfall rate, (2) vertical profile of reflectivity and (3) in the retrieval of microphysical parameters. At the present time, the importance of radar data assimilation in numerical weather prediction models is continuously growing, the latter two points appear to be a fundamental research issue and a rigorous approach able to separate the contribution of different causes is needed as a starting point for developing correction algorithms. Very intense mesoscale or synoptic-scale rainfall events can occasionally be observed in the Mediterranean region without any deep cyclone developing over the areas affected by precipitation. In these perplexing cases the synoptic situation can superficially look similar to cases in which very little precipitation occurs. An example is the major precipitation and flooding event that affected Piedmont, Italy, between 13 and 16 October 2000. The emphasis of this study is on the moisture origin and transport. Moisture balances are computed on different space and time scales, revealing that precipitation exceeds evaporation over an area inclusive of Piedmont and the northwestern Mediterranean region, on a time scale encompassing the event and about 2 weeks preceding it. This is suggestive of an important moisture contribution originating from outside the region. An approach to the optimal planning of a weather radar network is presented. In the approach, several aspects affecting the planning decision, including terrain blockage, the need to measure with two Doppler weather radars in some regions, and the environmental impact of their installation, are taken into account using a proper mathematical formulation. The decisional problem takes on a form that closely resembles a well-known combinatorial optimization problem, that is, the weighted set-covering problem. The proposed mathematical approach can serve as a methodological basis of a decision support system, the function of which is to assist decision makers in the selection of optimal sites for the installation of weather radars in a given region. In this paper, the methodology is presented, as are the preliminary results stemming from its application to the planning of the forthcoming Italian weather radar network.

This chapter presents a new generation of hip resurfacing systems: the ROMAX® Resurfacing System. Thanks to the original design of the acetabular shell, with 25° opening on the rim, the ROMAX® Resurfacing System provides an increased range of motion with respect to other resurfacing prostheses and avoids impingement with the psoas tendon, resulting in a minor risk of pain for the patient. The instrumentation has been optimized to be as compact and effective as possible, allowing the performance of the surgery using either the standard or anterior approach. The correct femoral neck axis can be easily achieved with the MyHip® patient matched drilling guides that are designed pre-operatively based on CT reconstruction of the patient’s hip.

This paper justifies, describes and discusses a project being undertaken within the European Union's 1991–94 Programme on the Environment. The aim of this project, code named “STORM” (Storm Tracking and Observation for Rainfall‐Runoff Monitoring) was designed to improve the identification, monitoring and local forecasting of high‐intensity rainfall events, which might cause flash flooding in north‐western coastal zones of the Mediterranean Sea. Eight laboratories in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom were involved in this project.

The city of Genoa, Italy, nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine Mountains, was rocked by severe flash foods on 4 November 2011. About 500 millimeters of rain—a third of the average annual rainfall—fell in 6 hours, killing six people and devastating the city center. A storm of this intensity is considered to be a multicentennial-return-period event. The torrential rainfall inflicted the worst disaster Genoa has experienced since October 1970, when a similar event killed 25 people. The peculiar fine-scale properties of this event motivate a comprehensive research effort in the field of predictability of severe rainfall processes over areas of complex orography.

New crosslinked ultra high molecular weight polyethylenes (UHMWPEs) have recently been developed, characterized and introduced in clinical applications. UHMWPE cross-linking treatments are very promising for reducing osteolysis induced by wear debris. The irradiation type, gamma or beta, the dosage and the thermal treatment performed during or following the irradiation process are all factors affecting polyethylene wear resistance. Thermal stabilization treatments performed after or during the irradiation process at a temperature above melting point (i.e.130 degrees C) have been proven to effectively remove the free radicals generated during irradiation from UHMWPE, but their effect on the mechanical properties of UHMWPE are not completely clear. In addition to wear rate reduction, maintaining good mechanical properties is fundamental aspect in designing the new generation of crosslinked UHMWPE for artificial load bearing materials, especially considering the application in total knee replacements. In this study, we investigated the influence of different stabilization treatments, performed after gamma irradiation, on structural, wear and mechanical properties of UHMWPE. We performed four different stabilization treatments, with different temperatures and cooling rates, on 100 kGy gamma irradiated UHMWPE. Structural properties of UHMWPE were assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). To assess the mechanical performance of the materials, uni-axial tensile tests were performed according to the ASTM D638 standard, bi-axial tension performance was evaluated by small punch tests (ASTM F2183-02), toughness resistance was evaluated by the Izod method (ASTM F648), and cold flow resistance was analysed by a dynamic compressive test. Evaluation of wear resistance was by a multidirectional pin-on-disk screening machine. Materials considered were in ""aged"" and ""non-aged"" conditions. Results confirmed that cross-linking greatly enhances UHMWPE wear resistance, but introduces some detrimental effects on the mechanical properties. In this study, we found that the negative ef-fects on the mechanical properties of crosslinked UHMWPE can be modulated, to some extent, by choosing a thermal stabiliza-tion treatment at a correct temperature and cooling rate. An improved methodology for investigating mesoscale model microphysics is presented and discussed for a case study. Polarimetric radar data are used to assess numerical weather prediction (NWP) model's skill in reproducing the microphysical features of severe rainfall. To this aim, an event of deep convection, developed on 20 May 2003 in the Po Valley (Italy), is analyzed. During the selected case study, two weather radars, sited in Gattatico and San Pietro Capofiume (near Bologna, Italy), detected a deep-convective and hail cell with a large inner graupel core which reached the ground, as was reported by local weather authorities and citizens. A hydrometeor classification algorithm, based on a Bayesian approach and a radar simulator model, are used to retrieve the vertical structure of the storm and characterize its ground effects. These products are used for evaluating the sensitivity of NWP models with respect to the graupel density, described in terms of the intercept parameter of the graupel size distribution and its depositional velocity. To this purpose two mesoscale NWP models, specifically COSMO-LAMI and MM5-V3, are used at high spatial resolution. Their ability in reproducing the vertical and the horizontal structure and the microphysical distribution of the major convective cell is evaluated. Both models show large sensitivity to different microphysical settings and a capability to reproduce fairly well the observed hail cell. Ground-radar reflectivity fields and the hydrometeor vertical structure are correctly simulated by both NWP models as opposed to a failure in reproducing the graupel distribution near the ground.

The successful deployment of the Borexino solar neutrino detector required assorted physical and chemical operations to produce exceptional pure fluids and fill multiple detector zones. The composition and flow rates of high purity gases and liquids had to be precisely controlled to maintain liquid levels and pressures. The system was required to meet exceptional requirements for cleanliness and leak-tightness. A large scale modular system connecting fluid receiving, purification and fluid delivery processes was developed for Borexino. At the core is a flow control system that delivers scintillator components to plants for purification, and then fills the Borexino detector volumes with ultrahigh purity buffer or ultrahigh purity scintillator. The liquid handling system maintains precise control over the liquid levels and differential pressures between the different volumes of the detectors that are separated by flexible nylon vessels. The preparation, commissioning and operation of the system for filling the Borexino detector with scintillator is described.

This paper illustrates some applications of COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) observations for rapid mapping of flooded areas and damages in small to medium size catchments. The results presented here have been obtained within the framework of the project “OPERA — Civil protection from floods” funded by the Italian Space Agency and run by a team of scientific research centres and private companies. The project aims to the systematic evaluation of the added value of the use of Earth Observation techniques into operational flood prediction chains. Due to the specific geomorphology of Italy, the focus is mainly on flash floods on small sized river catchments. Monitoring and modelling processes at proper space-time scales in this environment raise several issues to be solved, compared to applications in larger river basins. Here we address some related to the suitable use of CSK imagery.

Borexino, a large volume detector for low energy neutrino spectroscopy, is currently running underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The main goal of the experiment is the real-time measurement of sub MeV solar neutrinos, and particularly of the mono energetic (862 keV) Be7 electron capture neutrinos, via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure liquid scintillator. This paper is mostly devoted to the description of the detector structure, the photomultipliers, the electronics, and the trigger and calibration systems. The real performance of the detector, which always meets, and sometimes exceeds, design expectations, is also shown. Some important aspects of the Borexino project, i.e. the fluid handling plants, the purification techniques and the filling procedures, are not covered in this paper and are, or will be, published elsewhere (see Introduction and Bibliography)., Comment: 37 pages, 43 figures, to be submitted to NIM

The COSMO-SkyMed mission is expected to give a fundamental contribution for flood mapping, because of the high revisit time and throughput achieved by the four satellites that form the constellation. To study the potentiality of COSMO-SkyMed radar data for this purpose, two inundation events are analyzed in this paper, namely the flood occurred in Myanmar in May 2008 and the event that took place in the city of Alessandria (Italy) in April 2009. For the first event, two radar images were considered, one temporally close to the peak of the event, and the other one acquired one week later. As for the Alessandria flood, a time series of images was available, so that an attempt to monitor the temporal evolution of the inundation was accomplished.

The estimation of rare frequency rainfall is an essential prerequisite for the design of engineering structures and to determine risk areas. Index-based methods are among the most applied for regional frequency analysis of hydrological variables such as discharge and rainfall and comprise two stages: the mapping of a scale or “index” factor and the derivation of rainfall growth curves. The underlying hypothesis of these methods is that cumulative distribution functions of a certain random variable can be assumed homogeneous on a given region, except for the index factor, which varies spatially in that region and is often represented by the expected value of the random variable itself at a given location. Methods either to single out homogeneous regions or to evaluate the index factor can be purely statistical and physically based. In this paper a robust and transferable physically based methodology is proposed to estimate the index factor for rainfall in mountainous regions referred to in the following text as “index rainfall.” Index rainfall is defined as the expected value of annual rainfall maxima recorded in a fixed time window: a time window of 1 h is used. Reliable estimates of the index rainfall are obtained at ungauged sites by applying a relationship, based on a multivariate linear regression obtained at gauged sites, of rainfall and selected synthetic descriptors for atmospheric climate and orography. An extended and general set of descriptors is chosen from parameters that are considered in the literature to affect rainfall intensity. The relevant relief descriptors, defining slope, elevation, orientation, etc., at a given location, are extracted from digital elevation models (DEMs). A 2D Fourier series analysis of the DEM is performed and a spectral analysis is carried out to single out the components with the highest morphological information content. The synthetic relief descriptors are evaluated along different cross sections of the 2D truncated Fourier series to single out the role of the prevailing convection direction of extreme rainfall-producing meteorological patterns. The optimal descriptor subset for the study area is then extracted to maximize transferability of the method. Application to the Italian and French Alps and the Apennines shows encouraging results. Descriptor subset extraction has been tested and validated on independent subsets of index rainfall estimates in the regions. Results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust, transferable, and reliable for the evaluation of the index rainfall in ungauged sites.

The paper focuses on the multiple roles and advantages of the use of remotely sensed, especially COSMO/SkyMed, imagery in the context of flooding-event prevention and management, describing a support system for civil protection from floods and some of the image processing and analysis techniques involved in.

Thin Gap Gas Chambers have been proposed for an upgrade of the end-caps of the DELPHI detector at LEP due to their very limited longitudinal size combined with high efficiency and high granularity. Two full prototypes of the detector have been built and tested. We report on the on-board processor for coordinate computation and data transmission.

A three-dimensional radar simulator model (RSM) developed by Haase (1998) is coupled with the nonhydrostatic mesoscale weather forecast model Lokal-Modell (LM). The radar simulator is able to model reflectivity measurements by using the following meteorological fields, generated by Lokal Modell, as inputs: temperature, pressure, water vapour content, cloud water content, cloud ice content, rain sedimentation flux and snow sedimentation flux. This work focuses on the assessment of some uncertainty sources associated with radar measurements: absorption by the atmospheric gases, e.g., molecular oxygen, water vapour, and nitrogen; attenuation due to the presence of a highly reflecting structure between the radar and a "target structure". RSM results for a simplified meteorological scenario, consisting of a humid updraft on a flat surface and four cells placed around it, are presented.
