Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$\bar{\nu }_{\mu } \rightarrow \bar{\nu }_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is ( $$9.29\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$$ 9.29 ± 0.39 ) × 10 - 8 /spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events.

Abstract: Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ e signal in a sterile neutrino search. In addition, in order to demonstrate future prospects of the JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment, possible pulse shape discrimination improvements towards reducing cosmic ray induced fast neutron background are described.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e. comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $${5 \times 10^{-3}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 \lesssim \varDelta m^2_{41} \lesssim {3 \times 10^{-1}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 $$ 5 × 10 - 3 eV 2 ≲ Δ m 41 2 ≲ 3 × 10 - 1 eV 2 for mixing angles down to $$\sin ^2 2\theta _{14} \gtrsim {0.02} $$ sin 2 2 θ 14 ≳ 0.02 . No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $$\theta _{13} $$ θ 13 is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $$\theta _{14} $$ θ 14 as a function of $$ \varDelta m^2_{41} $$ Δ m 41 2 are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract A θ 13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ 13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e $$ {\overline{\nu}}_e $$ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ 13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ 13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation.

Abstract: Abstract The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes 9Li and 8He created by cosmic muon spallation on 12C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means that they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of ∼120 m.w.e. (∼300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of 32.1 ± 2.0 GeV (63.7 ± 5.5 GeV). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the 9Li and 8He decays, the contribution of the 8He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed 9Li yields in the near and far detectors are 5.51 ± 0.51 and 7.90 ± 0.51, respectively, in units of 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi-experiment, data driven relationship between the 9Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law Y = Y 0 E μ / 1 GeV α ¯ $$ Y = {Y}_0{\left(\left\langle {E}_{\mu}\right\rangle /1\ GeV\right)}^{\overline{\alpha}} $$ , giving α ¯ = 0.72 ± 0.06 $$ \overline{\alpha} = 0.72 \pm 0.06 $$ and Y 0 = (0.43 ± 0.11) × 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic 9Li background rates.

Abstract: The JSNS^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV^2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS^2 detector is located 24 m away from the neutrino source and began operation from June 2020. The detector contains 17 tonnes of gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) in an acrylic vessel, as a neutrino target. It is surrounded by 31 tonnes of unloaded LS in a stainless steel tank. Optical photons produced in LS are viewed by 120 R7081 Hamamatsu 10-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). Abstract: We present neutrino-based options for verifying that the nuclear reactors at North Korea's Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center are no longer operating or that they are operating in an agreed manner, precluding weapons production. Neutrino detectors may be a mutually agreeable complement to traditional verification protocols because they do not require access inside reactor buildings, could be installed collaboratively, and provide persistent and specific observations. At Yongbyon, neutrino detectors could passively verify reactor shutdowns or monitor power levels and plutonium contents, all from outside the reactor buildings. The monitoring options presented here build on recent successes in basic particle physics. Following a dedicated design study, these tools could be deployed in as little as one year at a reasonable cost. In North Korea, cooperative deployment of neutrino detectors could help redirect a limited number of scientists and engineers from military applications to peaceful technical work in an international community. Opportunities for scientific collaboration with South Korea are especially strong. We encourage policymakers to consider collaborative neutrino projects within a broader program of action toward stability and security on the Korean Peninsula.

Abstract: The magnetic moment of spin-1/2 fermion with mass m and charge e is predicted as $\mu = e/2m$ from the Dirac equation. The fermion precesses in magnetic field (B) with angular velocity $\omega _p = eB/m$ due to the magnetic moment. On the other hand, the cyclotron frequency of the fermion moving in the same magnetic field is $\omega _c = eB/m$. Since $\omega _c = \omega _p$, the helicity (spin component of the momentum direction) of the fermion conserves in any magnetic field. However, it is observed that there is actually a slight difference between $\omega _c$ and $\omega _p$. The origin of the difference is that the higher order diagrams add very small spin-flipping transition amplitude to the original one and change $\omega _p$. This effect is important because we can look new physics out through the additional transition amplitude.

Abstract: A θ oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν¯ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin(2θ) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract: We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e.\ comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $5 \cdot 10^{-3} $ eV$^2 \lesssim \Delta m^2_{41} \lesssim 3\cdot 10^{-1} $ eV$^2$ for mixing angles down to $\sin^2 2\theta_{14} \gtrsim 0.02$. No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $\theta_{13} $ is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $\theta_{14} $ as function of $ \Delta m^2_{41} $ are obtained., Comment: accepted for publication by EPJC

Abstract: The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium(Gd)-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $\gamma$-catcher and an optically separated outer veto volumes. A total of 120 10-inch photomultiplier tubes observe the scintillating optical photons and each analog waveform is stored with the flash analog-to-digital converters. We present details of the data acquisition, processing, and data quality monitoring system. We also present two different trigger logics which are developed for the beam and self-trigger.

Abstract: The JSNS$^2$ experiment is aimed to search for sterile neutrino oscillations using a neutrino beam from muon decays at rest. The JSNS$^2$ detector contains 17 tons of 0.1\% gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) as a neutrino target. Detector construction was completed in the spring of 2020. A slow control and monitoring system (SCMS) was implemented for reliable control and quick monitoring of the detector operational status and environmental conditions. It issues an alarm if any of the monitored parameters exceed a preset acceptable range. The SCMS monitors the high voltage (HV) of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the LS level in the detector, possible LS overflow and leakage, the temperature and air pressure in the detector, the humidity of the experimental hall, and the LS flow rate during filling and extraction. An initial 10 days of data-taking with a neutrino beam was done following a successful commissioning of the detector and SCMS in June 2020. Optical photons from scintillation are observed by 120 Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). A total of 130 PMTs for the JSNS2 experiment were both donated by other experiments and purchased from Hamamatsu. Donated PMTs were purchased around 10 years ago, therefore JSNS$^{2}$ did pre-calibration of the PMTs including the purchased PMTs. 123 PMTs demonstrated acceptable performance for the JSNS$^{2}$ experiment, and 120 PMTs were installed in the detector.

Abstract: Stainless steel is a candidate of the inner surface of the storage container for LAB-based Gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) to be used in the JSNS$^2$ neutrino detector. Aging effect on Gd concentration of Gd-LS was investigated with the Gd-LS sample stored in the passivated stainless steel bottle in two independent methods. The direct comparison of the neutron capture time measurement showed that there is no significant degradation of the capture time after 602 days aging. Titration was performed to measure Gd concentration, and the result after 466 days aging is consistent with the result before aging within the uncertainty of the measurement. The upper limit of degradation of Gd concentration in 21 kL tank case is estimated as 0.5 % for 10 years of storage. Both results lead to a conclusion that stainless steel is usable for Gd-LS storage for JSNS$^2$ experiment., 8 pages, 8 figures

The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experiment. JSNS$^{2}$ plans to use ISO tanks for the storage and transportation of the LS. In this paper, we describe the LS production, and present measurements of its optical properties and long term stability. Abstract: We introduce a novel approach to investigate CP violation in the neutrino sector, based on the simultaneous detection of $\nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_e$ stemming from the oscillation of $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ produced in the decay at rest of $\pi$s and $\mu$s at a beam dump. This approach relies on a novel liquid scintillator detector technology expected to yield unprecedented identification of $\nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_e$ charged-current interactions, which we investigate by means of Montecarlo simulations. Abstract: Liquid scintillators are a common choice for neutrino physics experiments, but their capabilities to perform background rejection by scintillation pulse shape discrimination is generally limited in large detectors. This paper describes a novel approach for a pulse shape based event classification developed in the context of the Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment. Unlike previous implementations, this method uses the Fourier power spectra of the scintillation pulse shapes to obtain event-wise information. A classification variable built from spectral information was able to achieve an unprecedented performance, despite the lack of optimization at the detector design level. Several examples of event classification are provided, ranging from differentiation between the detector volumes and an efficient rejection of instrumental light noise, to some sensitivity to the particle type, such as stopping muons, ortho-positronium formation, alpha particles as well as electrons and positrons. In combination with other techniques the method is expected to allow for a versatile and more efficient background rejection in the future, especially if detector optimization is taken into account at the design level., 27 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon-born lead from liquid scintillator.

Abstract: A study on cosmic muons has been performed for the two identical near and far neutrino detectors of the Double Chooz experiment, placed at $\sim$120 and $\sim$300 m.w.e. underground respectively, including the corresponding simulations using the MUSIC simulation package. This characterization has allowed to measure the muon flux reaching both detectors to be (3.64 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the near detector and (7.00 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the far one. The seasonal modulation of the signal has also been studied observing a positive correlation with the atmospheric temperature, leading to an effective temperature coefficient of $\alpha_{T}$ = 0.212 $\pm$ 0.024 and 0.355 $\pm$ 0.019 for the near and far detectors respectively. These measurements, in good agreement with expectations based on theoretical models, represent one of the first measurements of this coefficient in shallow depth installations., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: The oscillation results published by the Double Chooz Collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models substantiated by reactor-on data. In this analysis, we present a background-model-independent measurement of the mixing angle θ13 by including 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit of the observed antineutrino rates for different reactor power conditions is performed, yielding a measurement of both θ13 and the total background rate. The results on the mixing angle are improved significantly by including the reactor-off data in the fit, as it provides a direct measurement of the total background rate. This reactor rate modulation analysis considers antineutrino candidates with neutron captures on both Gd and H, whose combination yields sin2(2θ13)=0.102±0.028(stat.)±0.033(syst.). The results presented in this study are fully consistent with the ones already published by Double Chooz, achieving a competitive precision. They provide, for the first time, a determination of θ13 that does not depend on a background model.

Leaders in North Korea, South Korea, and the United States agree that one step could be dismantlement or civilian repurposing of the nuclear reactors at Yongbyon. We propose a cooperative method for verifying reactor shutdown or conversion. The key tools are meter-scale, field-deployable detectors that track neutrino emissions from reactor cores. Neutrino detectors can track power levels and fuel evolution in nuclear reactors, as experiments in South Korea, China, Russia, the United States, and Europe have demonstrated ([ 1 ][2]–[ 7 ][3]). At Yongbyon, neutrino detectors could be deployed to verify reactor shutdown or civilian operations without the need for operational records or access inside reactor buildings. Shutdown of North Korea's main plutonium production reactor could be verified with a detector in a standard freight container parked outside the reactor building. Existing neutrino technology may be attractive to all parties in the ongoing talks. North Korea may value a tool for demonstrating treaty compliance while maintaining custody of the reactor buildings. Other parties may value the tamper resistance of the neutrino signal and resilience of neutrino detectors, which require minimal on-site access and can reconstruct reactor operational history even after a data-taking pause. Neutrino projects are also a natural opportunity to strengthen relations between North and South Korea and to build international scientific ties. South Korea has an active neutrino community and could choose to deploy a counterpart to a Yongbyon-based detector at one of its own reactors. Resulting scientific collaboration could benefit Korea and the world. We encourage policy-makers to consider neutrino detectors as one step toward stability and security on the Korean Peninsula. 1. Abstract: This paper describes the design and the construction of the stainless steel tank of the JSNS$^2$ detector. The leakage was examined using water and gas after the construction. The new sealing technique with liquid gasket was developed, and its sealing capability was evaluated quantitatively. The result shows over 5 times better value than the tolerance level of leakage.The acceleration measurement during the transportation of the tank shows adequate robustness.These tests prove that the stainless steel tank is feasible to use the real experiment., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

33. A global fit determination of effective Δm312 from baseline dependence of reactor ν¯e disappearance

Abstract: Recently, three reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO have directly measured the neutrino mixing angle θ 13 . In this Letter, another important oscillation parameter, effective Δ m 31 2 ( = Δ m ˜ 31 2 ) is measured using baseline dependence of the reactor neutrino disappearance. A global fit is applied to publicly available data and Δ m ˜ 31 2 = 2.95 − 0.61 + 0.42 × 10 − 3 eV 2 , sin 2 2 θ 13 = 0.099 − 0.012 + 0.016 are obtained by setting both parameters free. This result is complementary to Δ m ˜ 31 2 to be measured by spectrum shape analysis. The measured Δ m ˜ 31 2 is consistent with Δ m ˜ 32 2 measured by ν μ disappearance in MINOS, T2K and atmospheric neutrino experiments within errors. The minimum χ 2 is small, which means the results from the three reactor neutrino experiments are consistent with each other.

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 \sigma. This result is consistent with previous measurements of $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$.

Abstract: In nuclear reactors, 239Pu are produced along with burn-up of nuclear fuel. 239Pu is subject of safeguard controls since it is an explosive component of nuclear weapon. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is watching undeclared operation of reactors to prevent illegal production and removal of 239Pu. In operating reactors, a huge numbers of anti electron neutrinos ( ν ¯ e ) are produced. Neutrino flux is approximately proportional to the operating power of reactor in short term and long term decrease of the neutrino flux per thermal power is proportional to the amount of 239Pu produced. Thus rector ν ¯ e ʼs carry direct and real time information useful for the safeguard purposes. Since ν ¯ e can not be hidden, it could be an ideal medium to monitor the reactor operation. IAEA seeks for novel technologies which enhance their ability and reactor neutrino monitoring is listed as one of such candidates. Currently neutrino physicists are performing R&D of small reactor neutrino detectors to use specifically for the safeguard use in response to the IAEA interest. In this proceedings of the neutrino2012 conference, possibilities of such reactor neutrinos application and current world-wide R&D status are described.

Abstract: The authors present a measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) for Z boson production by e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} collisions. The measurement includes the final data taken with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) during the period 1996--1998. Using a sample of 383,487 Z decays collected during the 1996-1998 runs they measure the pole-value of the asymmetry, A{sub LR}{sup 0}, to be 0.15056 {+-} 0.00239 which is equivalent to an effective weak mixing angle of sin{sup 2}Sigma{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.23107 {+-} 0.00030. The result for the complete 1992--1998 dataset comprising 537 thousand Z decays is sin{sup 2}Sigma{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.23097 {+-} 0.00027.

Abstract: Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, the products of $\mu^-$ capture on $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N and $^{16}$O have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, $2.3\times10^6$ stopping cosmic $\mu^-$ have been collected, of which $1.8\times10^5$ captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu)^{12}\mathrm B$ to date is reported: $6.57^{+0.11}_{-0.21}\times10^{3}\,\mathrm s^{-1}$, or $(17.35^{+0.35}_{-0.59})\%$ of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gammas, the ground state transition rate to $^{12}$B has been determined to be $5.68^{+0.14}_{-0.23}\times10^3\,\mathrm s^{-1}$. The heretofore unobserved reactions $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n)^{12}\mathrm B$ are measured. Further, a population of $\beta$n decays following stopping muons is identified with $5.5\sigma$ significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of $^{8}$He, the reaction $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{9}\mathrm{Li}$ is found to be present at the $2.7\sigma$ level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Abstract: In this chapter, possibility for the future neutrino experiments are discussed. The remaining issues of neutrino oscillation studies are, to measure the CP violation parameter $\updelta $, to determine $\Delta m^2_{31}$ mass hierarchy and the $\uptheta _{23}$ octant degeneracy. Approximated neutrino oscillation formulas with matter effects are introduced first and then possibilities of future experiments to address the remaining issues are discussed based on them. There are anomalies in various neutrino oscillation experiments which can be explained if there is fourth neutrino that is called sterile neutrino. The search for the sterile neutrino is another important subject in the future neutrino oscillation experiments and is discussed here. In order to determine the transition amplitudes, the absolute neutrino mass is necessary in addition to the neutrino oscillation parameters. The relation between the measured neutrino oscillation parameters and possible absolute mass measurements are discussed. Finally the neutrino-less double beta decay experiment, that can determine the absolute neutrino mass and whether the neutrino is Majorana particle or Dirac particle, is explained.

Abstract: Neutrinos are produced and detected by weak interactions. It is necessary to understand the weak interactions to calculate the energy spectrum of neutrinos generated in sources and the reaction cross section with detector materials. In this chapter, the weak interactions associated with the neutrinos are reviewed and neutrino reaction probabilities that will be used in the later sections are calculated. Starting from the wave function of the massless left-handed neutrinos, the neutrino-associated parts of the standard model Lagrangian are introduced. Based on the Lagrangian, the general matrix element for the four fermion interactions that include neutrino is formulated. The spectra of neutrinos produced in the pion decay, muon decay, $\upbeta $ decay, and the neutrino detection cross section via ${\nu } e$ elastic scatterings and inverse beta decay are quantitatively calculated.

Abstract: Nuclear reactors generate a huge number of low energy ν ¯ e 's . The reactor neutrinos have been used to study properties of neutrinos since its discovery a half century ago. Recently, KamLAND group finally discovered reactor neutrino oscillation with average baseline 180 km. According to the 3 flavor scheme of standard theory and measured oscillation parameters so far, the reactor neutrino is expected to perform another type of small oscillation at a baseline 1.8 km. KASKA experiment is a project to detect this small oscillation and to measure the last neutrino mixing angle θ 13 by using the world most powerful reactor complex, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. In this proceedings, phenomena of neutrino oscillation and the two reactor oscillation experiments, KamLAND and KASKA, are introduced.

Abstract: We describe a muon track reconstruction algorithm for the reactor anti-neutrino experiment Double Chooz. The Double Chooz detector consists of two optically isolated volumes of liquid scintillator viewed by PMTs, and an Outer Veto above these made of crossed scintillator strips. Muons are reconstructed by their Outer Veto hit positions along with timing information from the other two detector volumes. All muons are fit under the hypothesis that they are through-going and ultrarelativistic. If the energy depositions suggest that the muon may have stopped, the reconstruction fits also for this hypothesis and chooses between the two via the relative goodness-of-fit. In the ideal case of a through-going muon intersecting the center of the detector, the resolution is ∼40 mm in each transverse dimension. High quality muon reconstruction is an important tool for reducing the impact of the cosmogenic isotope background in Double Chooz., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle θ13 by detecting reactor ν¯e via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44% ± 12% (sys.) ± 5% (stat.) and 3.68ns ± 0.17ns (sys.) ± 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the $\bar\nu_{e}$ signal has increased. The value of $\theta_{13}$ is measured to be $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090 ^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor $\bar\nu_{e}$ prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of $\theta_{13}$ is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the $\theta_{13}$ measurement despite the observed distortion., Comment: 44 pages, 25 figures. Abstract: We present final measurements of the Z boson-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters Ae, Amu, and Atau with the complete sample of polarized Z bosons collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. From the left-right production and decay polar angle asymmetries in leptonic Z decays we measure Ae = 0.1544 +- 0.0060, Amu = 0.142 +- 0.015, and Atau = 0.136 +- 0.015. Combined with our left-right asymmetry measured from hadronic decays, we find Ae = 0.1516 +- 0.0021. Assuming lepton universality, we obtain a combined effective weak mixing angle of sin**2 theta^{eff}_W = 0.23098 +- 0.00026., 13 pages latex, including 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract: We have made the first direct symmetry tests in the decays of polarized Z0 bosons into fully identified bbg states, collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We searched for evidence of parity violation at the bbg vertex by studying the asymmetries in the b-quark polar- and azimuthal-angle distributions, and for evidence of T-odd, CP-even or CP-odd, final-state interactions by measuring angular correlations between the three-jet plane and the Z0 polarization. We found results consistent with standard model expectations and set 95% C. limits on anomalous contributions.

47. Prospects of reactor neutrino experiments

Abstract: Since the energy of a reactor neutrino is a few MeV, all Δ m 12 2 , Δ m 23 2 and Δ m 13 2 oscillations are accessible by reactor neutrino experiments. KamLAND observed the Δ m 12 2 oscillation and currently Double Chooz, RENO and Dayabay experiments are under construction aiming to detect Δ m 13 2 + Δ m 23 2 oscillation. There are still good prospects for future reactor neutrino experiments after them. For example, there is room to further improve sin 2 2 θ 13 accuracy at a baseline of ∼1.5 km, a very precise sin 2 2 θ 12 measurement and the determination of mass hierarchy may be possible at a baseline ∼50 km, and if KamLAND is enlarged to the SuperKamiokande size, better measurement of Δ m 12 2 and sin 2 2 θ 12 will be anticipated. It is important to take into account such possibilities when planning future neutrino program after θ 13 is measured by current experiments.

Abstract: The authors have made the first direct measurement of the parity-violating coupling of the Z{sup 0} boson to the strange quark, A{sub s}, using {approximately}550,000 e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} --> Z{sup 0} --> hadrons event produced with a polarized electron beam and recorded by the SLD experiment. Z{sup 0} s anti-s events were tagged by the absence of B or D hadrons and the presence in each hemisphere of a high-momentum K{sup {+-}} or K{sub s}{sup 0}. From the polar angle distributions of the strangeness-signed thrust axis, the authors obtained A{sub s} = 0.895{+-}0.066(stat.){+-}0.062(syst.). The analyzing power and u anti-u + d anti-d background were constrained using the data.

Abstract: The authors have developed a new technique for inclusive reconstruction of the energy of B hadrons. The excellent efficiency and resolution of this technique allow them to make the most precise determination of the b-quark fragmentation function, using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {r{underscore}arrow} Z{sup 0} decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The authors compared their measurement with the predictions of a number of fragmentation models. The authors excluded several of these models and measured the average scaled energy of weakly-decaying B hadrons to be (x{sub B}) = 0.714{+-}0.005(stat){+-}0.007(syst){+-}0.002 (model-dependence).

50. Positron Annihilation in Liquid Scintillator for Electron Antineutrino Detection

Abstract: Positron annihilation processes in a liquid scintillator to be used for the detection of electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND project were studied. The liquid scintillator was a mixture of isoparaffin, pseudocumene and 2,5diphenyloxazole. We measured positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectra which contained important timing information on identification of the electron antineutrinos. The PAL spectra of a nitrogen-saturated liquid scintillator consisted of three lifetime components. Two fast components with the lifetime of 0 .19 ± 0.05 ns and 0.48 ± 0.05 ns correspond to the mixture of para-positronium annihilation and free positron annihilation. The delayed component (3.41 ± 0.02 ns) with the intensity of 48 . 9± 0.3 % is ascribed to pick-off annihilation of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) annihilation. To understand the 2 γ annihilation processes of o-Ps in the liquid, we examined the effects of dissolved gases (nitrogen, oxygen, helium and argon) and mixing ratio of isoparaffin and pseudocumene which were the main components of the liquid scintillator. The lifetime of o-Ps was drastically shortened in the presence of oxygen, but not for other gases. The reaction rate constant for quenching of o-Ps by oxygen was obtained from the O2 concentration dependence of o-Ps lifetime component. The pick-off annihilation of o-Ps with the liquid scintillator is explained based on the bubble model. We discuss a possible microscopic picture of the surroundings of Ps in the liquid scintillator.
