Abstract

Summary Background Otoscope cones (OCs) are used in veterinary medical practices to examine healthy or infected ears in dogs and cats. Since OCs are reusable equipment, they can be vectors of cross contamination/infection between patients. Objectives The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of different disinfection procedures applied on OCs contaminated by Malassezia pachydermatis. Material and methods OCs were soaked for 10 min in a suspension of yeasts 2.5 McFarland and then allowed to air dry. OCs were soaked for 10 min either in ethanol, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid disinfectant, enilconazole or water (positive control). They were then paper wiped or left to air dry. Each OC was sampled with two swabs that were inoculated on modified Dixon's agar and incubated at 32 °C. On day 3, the number of Colony Forming Unit (CFU) was counted. Results Ninety-six cultures were performed and the growth of Malassezia could be seen in all cultures from positive controls/water (over 200 CFU in 6 from 12 tests). Similar results were observed when enilconazole was used at 0.2% concentration (over 200 CFU in 3 from 12 tests). In rest, all the cultures were negative. Conclusions Enilconazole should be used at minimal concentration of 0.4%.

Abstract

The LHCb collaboration has redesigned its trigger to enable the full offline detector reconstruction to be performed in real time. Together with the real-time alignment and calibration of the detector, and a software infrastructure to make persistent the high-level physics objects produced during real-time processing, this redesign enabled the widespread deployment of real-time analysis during Run 2. We describe the design of the Run 2 trigger and real-time reconstruction, and present data-driven performance measurements for a representative sample of LHCb's physics programme., 46 pages, 35 figures, 1 table. Abstract

International audience; The LHCb experiment at CERN has decided to optimise its physics reach by removing the first level hardware trigger for 2020 and beyond. In addition to requiring fully redesigned front-end electronics this design creates interesting challenges for the data-acquisition and the rest of the online computing system. Such a system can only be realized within realistic cost using as much off-the-shelf hardware as possible. Relevant technologies evolve very quickly and thus the system design is architecture-centred and tries to avoid to depend too much on specific technologies. In this paper we describe the design, the motivations for various choices and the current favoured options for the implementation, and the status of the R&D. We will cover the back-end readout, which contains the only custom-made component, the event-building, the event-filter infrastructure, and storage.

Abstract

ANTARES is a high-energy neutrino telescope installed in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2475 m. It consists of a three-dimensional array of optical modules, each containing a large photomultiplier tube. A total of 2700 front-end ASICs named Analogue Ring Samplers (ARS) process the phototube signals, measure their arrival time, amplitude and shape as well as perform monitoring and calibration tasks. The ARS chip processes the analogue signals from the optical modules and converts information into digital data. All the information is transmitted to shore through further multiplexing electronics and an optical link. Abstract

International audience; The high-energy physics experiments at the CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are preparing for Run3, which is foreseen to start in the year 2021. Data from the high radiation environment of the detector front-end electronics are transported to the data processing units, located in low radiation zones through GBT (Gigabit transceiver) links. The present work discusses the GBT link performance study carried out on custom FPGA boards, clock calibration logic and its implementation in new Arria 10 FPGA.

Abstract

The primary goal of LHCb is to measure the effects of new particles or forces beyond the Standard Model. Results obtained from data collected in 2010 show that the detector is robust and functioning well. While LHCb will be able to measure a host of interesting channels in heavy flavour decays in the upcoming few years, a limit of about 1 fb^−1 of data per year cannot be overcome without upgrading the detector. The LHC machine does not face such a limitation. With the upgraded detector, read out at 40MHz, a much more flexible software-based triggering strategy will allow a large increase not only in data rate, as the detector would collect 5 fb^−1 per year, but also the ability to increase trigger efficiencies especially in decays to hadronic final states. In addition, it will be possible to change triggers to explore different physics as LHC discoveries point us to the most interesting channels. Our physics scope extends beyond that of flavour. Possibilities for interesting discoveries exist over a whole variety of phenomena including searches for Majorana neutrinos, exotic Higgs decays and precision electroweak measurements. Here we describe the physics motivations and proposed detector changes for exploring new phenomena in proton-proton collisions near 14 TeV centre-of-mass energy.

Abstract

A data acquisition system for medical imaging applications is presented. Developed at CPPM, it provides high performance generic data acquisition and processing capabilities. The DAQ system is based on the PICMG xTCA standard and is composed of 1 up to 10 cards in a single rack, each one with 2 Altera Stratix IV FPGAs and a Fast Mezzanine Connector (FMC). Several mezzanines have been produced, each one with different functionalities. Some examples are: a mezzanine capable of receiving 36 optical fibres with up to 180 Gbps sustained data rates or a mezzanine with 12 × 5 Gbps input links, 12 × 5 Gbps output links and an SFP+ connector for control purposes. Several rack sizes are also available, thus making the system scalable from a one card desktop system useful for development purpose up to a full featured rack mounted DAQ for high end applications. Depending on the application, boards may exchange data at speeds of up to 25.6 Gbps bidirectional sustained rates in a double star topology through backplane connections. Also, front panel optical fibres can be used when higher rates are required by the application. The system may be controlled by a standard Ethernet connection, thus providing easy integration with control computers and avoiding the need for drivers. Two control systems are foreseen. A Socket connection provides easy interaction with automation software regardless of the operating system used for the control PC. Moreover a web server may run on the Envision cards and provide an easy intuitive user interface. The system and its different components will be introduced. Some preliminary measurements with high speed signal links will be presented as well as the signal conditioning used to allow these rates.

Abstract

International audience; The LHCb experiment is designed to study differences between particles and anti-particles as well as very rare decays in the beauty and charm sector at the LHC. The detector will be upgraded in 2019 in order to significantly increase its efficiency, by removing the first-level hardware trigger. The upgrade experiment will implement a trigger-less readout system in which all the data from every LHC bunch-crossing are transported to the computing farm over 12000 optical links without hardware filtering. The event building and event selection are carried out entirely in the farm. Another original feature of the system is that data transmitted through these fibres arrive directly to computers through a specially designed PCIe card called PCIe40. The same board handles the data acquisition flow and the distribution of fast and slow controls to the detector front-end electronics. It embeds one of the most powerful FPGAs currently available on the market with 1.2 million logic cells. The board has a bandwidth of 480 Gbits/s in both input and output over optical links and 100 Gbits/s over the PCI Express bus to the CPU. We will present how data circulate through the board and in the PC server for achieving the event building. We will focus on specific issues regarding the design of such a board with a very large FPGA, in particular in terms of power supply dimensioning and thermal simulations. The features of the board will be detailed and we will finally present the first performance measurements

Abstract

The upgraded LHCb readout system aims at a trigger-free readout of the entire detector at the bunch-crossing rate. This implies a major architectural change for the readout system that must capture the data at 40 MHz instead of 1 MHz. One of the key components of this upgrade system is the readout board. The LHCb collaboration has chosen to evaluate the ATCA architecture as form-factor for the readout board. The readout system architecture relies on a unique board able to satisfy all the requirements for data transmission, timing and fast control as well as experiment control system. A generic ATCA carrier board has been developped. It is equipped with four dense AMC mezzanines able to interface a total of 144 bidirectional optical links at up to 10 Gbits/s. This board embeds 4 high end Stratix V GX devices for data processing and a programmable set of commutation functions allowing to reconfigure the connectivity of the system in a flexible way. The overall architecture will be presented and how the cards map over each functionality. First results and measurements will be described in particular those related to the use of new highly integrated optical devices. At last we will present the incremental development methodology used in this project.

Abstract

In 2005, the ANTARES Collaboration deployed and operated at a depth of 2500 m a so-called Mini Instrumentation Line equipped with Optical Modules (MILOM) at the ANTARES site. The various data acquired during the continuous operation from April to December 2005 of the MILOM confirm the satisfactory performance of the Optical Modules, their front-end electronics and readout system, as well as the calibration devices of the detector. The in-situ measurement of the Optical Module time response yields a resolution better than 0.5 ns. The performance of the acoustic positioning system, which enables the spatial reconstruction of the ANTARES detector with a precision of about 10 cm, is verified. These results demonstrate that with the full ANTARES neutrino telescope the design angular resolution of better than $0.3^\circ$ can be realistically achieved., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

ATLAS is a large general-purpose experiment, which will be located at the Large Hadron Collider, LHC. The performance of electronic and optoelectronic components for a 1.28 Gb/s radiation tolerant optical read-out link for the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter system has been studied. A demonstrator optical link based around the use of the commercial G-link serializer chipset, Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser Diodes and multimode optical fibers, has been built and tested in neutron and gamma radiation environments. The components have been found to be radiation tolerant up to at least a neutron fluence of 1.7 X 10 13 n(1MeV(Si))/cm 2 and an ionizing dose of 800 Gy(Si). However, Single-Event Upsets (SEU) in the G-link serializer chip were observed during neutron irradiations. An estimate of the expected ATLAS SEU rate, based on the use of Burst Generation Rate curves for silicon has been performed and leads to an error rate prediction of 2 +/- 1 errors every 100 hours of LHC running.

Abstract

The results from a series of neutron irradiation tests of a high speed digital optical data link based on a commercial serialiser, commonly known as 'G-link', and a vertical cavity surface emitting laser are described. The link was developed as a candidate for the front-end readout of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter. The components at the emitting end of the link were unaffected by neutron irradiation levels exceeding those expected during 10 years of LHC running. However, the link suffered from single event upsets (SEU) when irradiated with energetic neutrons. A very general method based on the burst generation rate (BGR) model has been developed and is used to extrapolate the error rate observed during tests to that expected at the LHC. A model independent extrapolation was used to check the BGR approach and the results were consistent. To reduce the SEU rate and the deadtime it implies, a dual G-link system was built and tested with neutron radiation.

Abstract

full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Details of the mechanical prototype line, the electromechanical cable and data acquisition are presented. Data taken during the immersion study revealed deficiencies in the pressure resistance of the electromechanical cable terminations at the entry points to the electronics containers. The improvements to the termination, which have been integrated into subsequent detection lines, are discussed. The line also allowed deep-sea acoustic measurements with a prototype hydrophone system. The technical setup of this system is described, and the first results of the data analysis are presented. Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda_abs ~ 60(26) m, lambda_sct^eff ~ 265(122) m, with significant (15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures (including 4 available as separate figures), to be published in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised., Comment: v2: 180 pages; many figures. Abstract

ANTARES is a neutrino telescope being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of a three dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes that can detect the Cherenkov light induced by charged particles produced in the interactions of neutrinos with the surrounding medium. High angular resolution can be achieved, in particular when a muon is produced, provided that the Cherenkov photons are detected with sufficient timing precision. Considerations of the intrinsic time uncertainties stemming from the transit time spread in the photomultiplier tubes and the mechanism of transmission of light in sea water lead to the conclusion that a relative time accuracy of the order of 0.5 ns is desirable. Accordingly, different time calibration systems have been developed for the ANTARES telescope. In this article, a system based on Optical Beacons, a set of external and well-controlled pulsed light sources located throughout the detector, is described. This calibration system takes into account the optical properties of sea water, which is used as the detection volume of the ANTARES telescope.
